An American who fell in love with Kenya and its people is planning for a big international forum in Nairobi in the year 2016

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City

Please find attached is our official News Release in a PDF format. Please note that we live in the 21st Century and News Releases are no longer written words, we now use both Multi-Media and Social Media to promote change and ideas in the world. We created this document in format that goes not only to the Kenyan Media, this document should go directly to the people of Kenya. We both know what happen in the “Middle East” with the “Arab Spring.” Social media can bring change in the world. In order for Africa to move into a 21st Century paradigm we must use “Social Media.”

Let me explain a very important concept to you. We are asking the “Republic of Kenya” to honor its “African/American Family” with a “Formal State Reception.” State Receptions are only given to Heads of State.

[placeholders for 3 images]

In the history of Africa and African/Americans being taken as “slaves to America” not African country has ever offered “African/Americans a Formal State Reception.” A formal State Reception has to come from and be agreed upon by both the U.S. and Kenya State Departments. It is one thing to give a “Head of State” a Formal State Reception but how do you give African/American people a “Formal State Reception.?” This means that the total Republic of Kenya government and people must format a way to honor its “African/American Family.”

Please note that I have taken groups to Kenya for over a decade and I understand both Kenya and America and I am an expert in this area. I have an above average background regarding Kenya’s culture and history. Please understand that travel to Kenya will be long and grueling and beyond the usual travel time that most Americans have experienced. We have to look at “Jet Lag” and a way to promote such an event. We must develop a comprehensive “marketing strategy” that will attract 1000’s of African/Americans to Kenya.

For the record we have created a “Brand Name” for the event. The most noted African word in the English Language is “SAFARI.” It was American writer Earnest Hemingway that introduced the word Safari into the English language. The Kenyan Government must officially expand the meaning of the word “SAFARI” We give its many acronyms.

We have 5 major components as a way to promote the event. We must make the event a spiritual movement.

1. The Safari Home Coming Celebration is the story of the Prodigal Son. Preachers worldwide will relate Africa’s Children coming home to the “Prodigal Son” in the Bible

2. The event will start in Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis is important because Memphis was once the “Slave Capital of the World.” Symbolically the Children of Africa come from Memphis, Tennessee to Kenya.

3. Dr. Martin Luther King was Killed in Memphis and this event honors Dr. King’s Legacy by us bringing the gauntlet of Dr. King to Kenya

4. This event connects and completes the Legacy of Tom Mboya. Tom Mboya went to America to help Kenya students. That connects started by Mboya brings African/Americans home to Kenya.

5. Kenya is the home of Barack Obama Sr. and all African/Americans must travel to the Ancestry home of America’s President Barack Obama Sr.

Rev. Otura it is urgent that the Kenyan Government and the Kenyan people officially agree to honor its African/American family. Once the agreement is agreed upon we will take 3 years to plan and promote the celebration. We will have so many jobs to do to promote the event. When it comes to the area of the “Christian Faith” we expect you to tell the story that only such a celebration is from “God.” Rev. Otura since you and I connected you and other Kenyan ministers will visits 100’s of churches in America to tell them to come home to Africa. We must develop our website so that anyone in America can simple look on their Cell phone and see videos of the event. Since the event will take place in Kenya’s “High Season” Kenya will not have enough Hotel Rooms.

Such an event will be like the Olympics and it takes a lot of planning and infrastructure. South Africa has better “infrastructure” for such an event. Outside of Nairobi many areas cannot accommodate many African/Americans. Such an event will change the culture of Kenya.

Rev. Otura I would like to thank you for you help. Prior to our going to Kenya we can do a lot of the preliminary work out of the way. We must meet with every Airline that travels from America to Kenya to work out “Budget Travel packages.” We must make the trip affordable to 1000’s of people who could not otherwise travel to Africa.

The most Important Factor

The most important element to the “Safari Homecoming Celebration” is the Barack Obama factor. We must get the date and agreement signed so that President Barack Obama Jr. can officially put the event on his calendar. Because the Kenya State Department and American State Department will sign an official Historic Agreement this will allow President Obama to officially come to Kenya and be the Key note speaker. Please note that in July of 2016 the President will only have 6 months left in office. Hillary Clinton will be running for President. Since this event will be on the “World Stage” Hilleary Clinton may attend the event. Many American legislators will come from America. Because some many American legislators will be in Kenya all African leaders will be at the event.

When you add up African leaders, Church leaders, The President Kenya will not have enough hotel rooms. We will need tents and need camps to support this event. President Obama will come to Kenya. President Obama loves Kenya and he will come to Kisumu.

I think that I have written enough. I think you understand how urgent and important the work we are doing. Now is the time for you to return home to assist in promoting this event. You must stand on stage with President Obama.

Kenya: The Kangemi Waruku Human Peace Caravan

From: odhiambo okecth

Dear Friends,

The Kangemi Waruku Human Peace Caravan will be flagged by the DC Westlands Ms Flora Mworoa at the Chief’s Office Kitisuru at 8.00am tomorrow morning. The Chief’s Office is immediately by the Kangemi Fly Over, and the Walk will be led by The Administration Police Band and the Traffic Police.

We had our last planning meeting today at the DC’s Office and with us was Ms Petronila Nafula- the CEO Westlands Association. Through the Association, we have been able to receive a Land Rover mounted with a PA and Sound System, some water and sodas from the Westlands Jobless Foundation and Westlands Welfare Association. We are also looking at how we can pay the logistical issues for the Band.

We are also happy with our local mobilizing team led by Brian at Waruku, and the District Peace Committee Teams.

Then on Thursday the 21st Feb 2013, we will host A Million Man Human Peace Caravan in the CBD to be flagged off by the PC Nairobi at Nyayo House in the company of the Chair IEBC and we will walk to Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue, Moi Avenue and end at Jevanjee Gardens. All the Nairobi Candidates are invited with their Friends and Supporters. We want to show the whole Country that we are indeed One Family and One People under God. All are welcome.

Lastly, The Kamukunji Human Peace Caravan will be flagged off by the DC Kamukunji Mr. George Natembeya at the Salvation Army off First Avenue Eastleigh on the 23rd Feb 2013 at 8.00am. In a meeting with the DPC Team Members, Youth and Women Leaders chaired by the DC today at his office, we agreed to aggressively mobilize for the event. And from the look of things, Kamukunji might be the biggest ever event in this series.

On behalf of The Clean Kenya Campaign, may I take this opportunity to thank all our Partners- Friends and Groups that have stepped in to make The Human Peace Caravans a success. We want to sincerely thank the Provincial Administration in Nairobi and Kisumu, and the IEBC Teams for their partnership. We also want to thank the KICC Management for allowing us the use of The Court Yard on the 3rd March 2013 at great discounts as part of their contribution to the Campaign.

We have faith more partners will come on board. And let us not campaign as if we are preparing for war. It is only an election and Kenya and Kenyans will remain Friends after 4th March 2013- quoting Mr. George Natembeya- DC Kamukunji.

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya, a Clean Africa and a Clean General Election as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50 in Kenya.

Kenya: Westlands on 20th Feb

From: odhiambo okecth

Dear Friends,

We hosted a Consultative Meeting this morning with the Waruku 2 Youth Team led by Brian and we reviewed the Walk Path for The Waruku Kangemi Human Peace Caravan which we have rescheduled to the 20th Feb.

Everything else remains the same.

At the same time, there are serious discussions going on about making The Human Peace Caravans even more bigger, and we will give details as soon as the works in progress becomes clearer.

We have been excited by the call from IEBC to all aspirants who placed their posters across Kenya to clear the same 7 days before the elections. This call must be enforced, because, our Towns are painted in many colours which are extremely offending to the eye.

Serious efforts must be put in place to help manage the question of Election Posters.

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya, a Clean Africa and a Clean General Election as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50 in Kenya.

Kenya: Nominations; Take personal responsibility

From: odhiambo okecth

Friends,

I was hosted at Radio Ramogi this morning and what Mr. Ben Oluoch Okello and I were discussing are issues that touch on today’s Party Primaries and the Mathare Human Peace Caravan scheduled for the 19th January 2013.

As we invite Kenyans to having a successful and violence free Party Primaries, we also want to share with you this;
http://www.nation.co.ke/oped/Opinion/-/440808/1667316/-/klawebz/-/index.html

The Clean Kenya Campaign and Radio Ramogi is inviting all Kenyans who are participating in the Party Primaries to exercise extreme caution and take personal responsibility on the consequences of their choices.

The people we Nominate today are most likely going to be our next set of leaders. Those who get the Party Nominations in the Jubilee and CORD Coalition strongholds will definitely either become Members of the National Assembly, Senators, Governors, Women Representatives or County Ward Representatives.

We hence want to invite each and every eligible voter to seriously interrogate his or her choice, and live with the consequences of such choices.

Action Time in Kariobangi 16th Jan 2013 with Kariobangi Waste Management Alliance

Secondly, on Saturday the 19th January 2013, the PC Nairobi Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu, is going to lead the Mathare Human Peace Caravan across Mathare. He will flag off the Caravan at 8.00am outside the Redeemed Gospel Church and match with into Mathare. He will address the residents at several hotspot areas and ultimately address the public at Huruma Sports Grounds at about 9.30am. He will be accompanied by several Leaders who believe that peace is a must in our society.

Religious Leaders led by the Apostolic Bishop of the Redeemed Gospel Church Dr Arthur Kitonga and the SUPKEM Leaders will be present and they will also address the public as they pray for peace.

We are inviting any Partners who can take care of the Tents, Chairs, Podium and the PA and Sound System to volunteer their support.

Thirdly, Saturday the 19th Jan 2013 is going to be a real loaded day for us;

In Mombasa, Mr. Peter Nyaga- the Chairman of the Kongowea Traders Welfare Association, has just informed us that they will conduct a Clean-up cum Voter Education Campaign at Kongowea Market on Saturday the 19th January 2013 as from noon. All our Partners and Friends in and around Mombasa are invited to join with them for this noble exercise.

In the US, President Barack Obama will put politics aside on Saturday the 19th Jan and join in the National Day of Service, in solidarity with the people of Mathare.

In Bungoma, the Kibabii DTTC Red Cross Club will join with the Kenya Red Cross in Cleaning the Bungoma District Hospital and its environs and later host a Peace Rally.

Call for papers:

5th European Conference on African Studies (ECAS 5), Lisbon, June 26-28, 2013.

Panel 145:

“The theory and methodology of representation(s): the analytical potential of a concept in contexts of transformation and innovation in contemporary Africa”.

Convenor:

Christine Ludl (Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies / Centre Marc Bloch Berlin.

Short Abstract

This panel examines the analytical and heuristic potential of the concept of representation(s) and its linkages to concepts of culture, identity, and politics in contexts of social, cultural, political, and economic transformation, creativity and innovation in contemporary Africa.

Long Abstract

The concepts of representation(s) and the imagination play an important though implicit role in the social and cultural sciences. They frequently appear as the smallest but hardly defined unit of concepts of culture and identity or serve as their substitute. Studies on popular culture gave important insight in how citizens interpreted and dealt with authoritarian contexts and how representations of legitimacy and success underwent profound transformations during the democratic transitions in the 1990s. More recently, studies accounted for the creativity of African citizens and institutions in contexts of on-going social, political, economic, and cultural transformation. Finally, the “writing culture” debate and its repercussions addressed questions of authorship and the production of knowledge to which the question of representation(s) is central. However, the notion is rarely based on clearly defined concepts or connected to a corresponding methodology. This panel examines the analytical and heuristic potential of the concepts of representation(s) and the imagination. How can we conceptualize the notion of representation(s) both in the sense of ideas, perceptions, and the imagination of future possibilities and of the modes of their presentation and expression through language, practices, cultural productions, and performances? What epistemological and methodological implications follow from these concepts? The panel invites papers, which propose innovative theoretical and methodological approaches to the notions of (social) representations and the imagination and of their linkages to concepts of culture, identity, and politics through empirical research in contexts of social, cultural, political, and economic creativity and innovation in contemporary Africa.

Proposals should consist of a paper title, a (very) short abstract of less than 300 characters, and an abstract of 250 words.

The deadline for paper proposals is January 16, 2013. All paper proposals must be made online using the link at the bottom of the panel description:
http://www.nomadit.co.uk/ecas/ecas2013/panels.php5?PanelID=2204

General rules on how to submit a paper proposal can be found at:
http://cea.iscte.pt/ecas2013/cfp.shtml.

Friends,

On the 4th March 2013, the 14.3 million Kenyans who Registered as Voters will be trooping to the ballot boxes to elect our crop of Political Leaders for the next 5 Year Circle. This will be an occasion not to be missed by all who are eligible.

At The Clean Kenya Campaign, and working in partnership with the Public Service Transformation Department, A Better World, Africa Youth Trust, Safe and Friendly Cities for All, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, the Provincial Administration, the City Council of Nairobi and a host of other Partners, we will be launching the Kenyans for a Clean General Election Campaign on the 5th January 2013 at the Redeemed Gospel Church in Huruma.

A group photo with the IEBC Commissioners and the PC Nairobi Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu seated on the left, Chairman Isaac Hassan and Odhiambo T Oketch

We all know that we will be electing 6 sets of Leaders namely;

The President
The Member of the National Assembly,
The Senator
The Women County Representative
The Governor and
The Ward Representative
This calls for greater civic education to target Kenyans, especially the elderly voters, and any other voter who might get confused in the process. We all want to work for a Clean General Electioneering, and a Clean General Election to boot, where we all participate as brothers and sisters as One Family under God.

It is with this in mind that we are inviting the IEBC Chair Mr. Issack Hassan, his Team at the Commission, the PC Nairobi Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu and his Team at the Provincial Administration, the Town Clerk at the City Council of Nairobi Mr. Patrick Tom Odongo and his Team at the Council, the Media and all Friends of Kenya, people who believe that we can all work for a Clean General Election, to join with us at the Redeemed Gospel Church at 7.00am as we launch the Kenyans for a Clean General Election Campaign.

We will start by having a General Clean-up along Juja Road at 7.00am, just next to the Church, then recede to the Church Hall at 9.00am for the Official Launch of the Campaign.

All Political Leaders from across the political divide in the greater Starehe Constituency have been invited. I have personally reached out to the TNA and CORD Secretariats to notify their Members.

We want to work for a Clean Kenya as One Family under God. And this is in line with our second and third Pillars at The Clean Kenya Campaign; Peace Building and Good Governance.

This will be our schedules after the Official Launch;

· 5th January 2013; Mathare in Starehe

· 12th January 2013; Kibra in Langata

· 16th January 2013; Kasarani

· 19th January 2013; Mombasa

· 26th January 2013; Dagoreti

· 2nd February 2013; Embakasi

· 9th February 2013; Westlands

· 13th February 2013; Makadara

· 16th February 2013; Kisumu

· 23rd February 2013; Kamukunji

· 2nd March 2013; Charter Hall at City Hall

To help put all this into perspective, we had a meeting this morning with the Church and our Coordinators in Mathare, and later with the IEBC Leadership in Nairobi at Nyayo House.
We are inviting as many Partners as possible into this Campaign.

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya, a Clean Africa and a Clean General Election as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50 in Kenya.

Kenya: Vote4Peace Vote4Kenya: It’s time for Serious Request 2012! (19th – 24th December)

From: This is Africa

Hello people,

Serious Request Kenya 2012 is kicking off right now, and we’re video-streaming the event round the clock, so come on in now and watch the action.

Serious Request is a DJ event that runs every year from the 19th till the 24th of December, and this is the fifth year in a row that our flagship station, Ghetto Radio Nairobi, is staging the event.

Three DJs, locked in a glass studio in the centre of Nairobi, broadcast round the clock for 6 days, without food, the idea being to raise awareness and stimulate discussions about a chosen social issue.

The theme this year is Vote4Peace Vote4Kenya. http://funx.dmd.omroep.nl/x/c/?JYhBDsIgEAC.4gcoZVvbYsILvHjyjnQNxGJbWCS_HkUvk5kxSkDxajqOJSgYuqEsSnRTW6yyRNuJ85xzQ9ZFF.U9OKMbj9yn6AyfkbRbuJAjSB4xuDVFFnBPGIlBK4AJSZZB.8WMBv0NA3uthP2G2uBfH.h86zKra41L.Yefnuv.AAA27 As you will recall, the violence that followed the last Kenyan election left over 1,000 people dead and a quarter of a million displaced. Kenyans will be going to the polls once again on the 4th of March 2013, hence our theme.

Your DJs this year are Essie, Solloo en Mbusii. http://funx.dmd.omroep.nl/x/c/?RY5BDoIwEAC.0ge4VCACmvTo0Yu8oNKVblJa7C4hvh5JOHidZDIzmLLaJtNd2i2bqqmbLZiy7s6bN15kvmm9rmshnpjYvjMNtphQTwvToB2KpaDLa1vXevQokiBbRwnmjIxRMDOkCOIRGnD2C4O3IWAccWdWgBgYM6WFIeNnQRaozvuPM3dmwpPqUwgpKRuderz2JilQ.WGo52Gof_sHA68

There’ll be lots of music, of course – live performances and DJ requests – but there will also be a range of election-related activities going on every day, such as the issuing of ID cards, a voter registration program and workshops about democracy for young voters.

Watch the event live on This Is Africa now. http://funx.dmd.omroep.nl/x/c/?S7Y1NPqfa2thav6.yNbIzNjsf46tobGFwf8M24ySkgIrff3y8nK9kozM4szixLSizOREvdxU.f8ptuGJJckZCsFBCvl5CiGejgp5_eUAA28

Friends,
In our continuing mobilization process for the Massive Clean-up and Voter Registration Campaign in Kenya and Nairobi in particular, we are requesting His Excellency the President to announce Friday the 14th December 2012 as a Public Holiday to enable as many Kenyans Register as Voters.

WORLD: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

From: Ouko joachim omolo
Voices of Justice for Peace
Regional News

BY FR JOACHIM OMOLO OUKO, AJ
NAIROBI-KENYA
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2012

Today is Sunday November 25, 2012, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. For Roman Catholic it is the feast of Christ the King. The Day for the Elimination of violence against women has been officially recognised by the United Nations since 1999. Attached images demonstrate horrible faces of some of the assaulted women around the world.

Women’s activists have marked 25 November as a day against violence since 1981. This date came from the brutal assassination in 1960, of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican ruler Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961).

On 20 December 1993 the General Assembly, by resolution 48/104, adopted the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women. NGOs, faith groups and women’s groups are especially active in the Day, pressing government to take concrete action.

The Secretary-General of the UN, Ban Ki Moon in his statement describes how millions of women and girls around the world are assaulted, beaten, raped, mutilated or even murdered in what constitutes appalling violations of their human rights.

From battlefield to home, on the streets, at school, in the workplace or in their community, up to 70 per cent of women experience physical or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime. As many as a quarter of all pregnant women are affected. All too often, perpetrators go unpunished. Women and girls are afraid to speak out because of a culture of impunity.

Some historians believe that the history of violence against women is tied to the history of women being viewed as property and a gender role assigned to be subservient to men and also other women.

Widows in particular are often confront a denial of inheritance and land rights, degrading and life-threatening mourning and burial rites and other forms of widow abuse. Some are evicted from their homes and physically abused – some even killed – even by members of their own family.

This happens because in many countries, a woman’s social status is inextricably linked to her husband’s, so that when her husband dies, a woman no longer has a place in society. To regain social status, widows are expected to marry one of their husband’s male relatives, sometimes unwillingly. That is why for many, the loss of a husband is only the first trauma in a long-term ordeal.

Yet still, in many countries, widowhood is stigmatized and seen as a source of shame. Widows are thought to be cursed in some cultures and are even associated with witchcraft. Such misconceptions can lead to widows being ostracized.

As a result children of widows are often affected, both emotionally and economically. Widowed mothers, now supporting their families alone, are forced to withdraw children from school and to rely on their labour.

Moreover, the daughters of widows may suffer multiple deprivations, increasing their vulnerability to abuse. Such cruelties are often seen as justified in terms of cultural or religious practice. It explains why even in countries where legal protection is more inclusive, widows suffer social marginalization.

In some communities widows are forced to be sexually cleansed, generally involving a widow having sexual relations either with a designated village cleanser or with a relative of her late husband.

It has traditionally been a way to break with the past and move forward—as well as an attempt to establish a family’s ownership of the husband’s property, including his wife. It does not matter whether the husband died of Aids or not.

In some communities where a group of widows are challenging the practice with help from church institutions, especially in Western Kenya, even though they have refused to sleep with a cleanser, most of these women are traumatized.

Laws are not enough to change these conditions. India, for example, has a law dating back to 1956 that allows some women to inherit property from their fathers. Despite the law, women rarely inherit and are often unaware of their rights.

Many widows in traditional societies have no rights, or very limited rights, to inheritance or land ownership under customary and religious law. Without inheritance rights, including a lack of rights to the property of their birth family, widows find themselves financially insecure and totally dependent on the charity of their husbands’ relatives.

Poor nutrition, inadequate shelter and vulnerability to violence, combined with a lack of access to health care, can impact the physical and mental well-being of widows. The sexual and reproductive health needs of widows may go unaddressed, including the fact that widows are often the victims of rape.

Due to taboo and stigma associated with sexual violence, many cases of sexual abuse are not reported. Experiences of sexual and gender based violence like this were suffered on a massive extent in 2008 when Kenya faced the worst political crises since independence.

Yet still, domestic violence is often treated as a private matter, exempt from norms and laws that apply to stranger violence. Victims face stigma not associated with other crimes. Impunity emboldens perpetrators.

In conservative communities, Muslim women are often considered inferior to their husbands, possibly controlled or oppressed, and lacking opportunities that would give them their own personal sense of identity, all of which adds to the complicated nature of unearthing and obtaining remedies for domestic violence.

Many Muslim women are required to wear a veil, hijab or burga. In Iran a woman who is unveiled in public could be fined or put in jail. This is because domestic violence is considered to be a problem in Muslim-majority cultures.

Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

According to 1979 Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Article 10 provides that States must take measures to ensure women’s equal rights with men to education.

Among the provisions of Article 12 is the requirement to take all appropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women in the field of health care in order to ensure, on a basis of equality of men and women, access to health-care services, including those related to family planning. Article 16 requires States Parties to eliminate discrimination against women in the context of marriage and family relations.

The 1993 World Conference on Human Rights, Declaration and Programme of Action (‘Vienna Declaration’), Article 41 recognizes the importance of women’s right to enjoy the highest standard of physical and mental health throughout their life span. Throughout the document there are significant statements relating to women’s human rights and violence against women.

Still, 1993 Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, Article 4 calls on States to condemn violence against women and not invoke any custom, tradition or religious consideration to avoid their obligations with respect to its elimination. States should pursue by all appropriate means and without delay a policy of eliminating violence against women.

1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), Programme of Action, Article C, Chapter 7 addresses sexually transmitted diseases and the prevention of HIV from the perspective of women’s vulnerability to the epidemic, setting out key recommendations for addressing HIV through reproductive health services.

1995 Fourth World Conference on Women (‘Beijing’), Declaration and Platform for Action, Strategic Objective C.3 is to “Undertake gender-sensitive initiatives that address sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS and sexual and reproductive health issues”.

2000 Millennium Declaration and Development Goals-Goal 3 calls on nations to “Promote gender equality and empower women” and Goal 6 is to “Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases”.

2001 UN General Assembly Special Session (UNGASS) on HIV/AIDS, Declaration of Commitment- Article 14 of the Declaration stresses “that gender equality and the empowerment of women are fundamental elements in the reduction of the vulnerability of women and girls to HIV/AIDS”.

Kenya & World: Diaspora Voter Access Petition against IEBC Polling Centers Decision

from: Kenya Diaspora Development Forum of MN.

Nov 11th, 2012

Kenya Diaspora Development Forum
2825 Cedar Ave. S.,
Minneapolis, MN 55407
USA

Kenyan Diaspora Voters,

As you may already be aware, the IEBC has announced the polling centers for Kenya Diaspora voters in USA. There will be, according to the IEBC, only three polling centers established at Kenya’s diplomatic stations in New York, Los Angeles and Washington DC. This measure means that Kenyans living in the mid-western region of USA will be required to travel to one of the three centers, first, to register to vote, and, afterwards, to cast their vote. The practical and cost implications of this actions are unacceptable. The IEBC is, in effect, perpetrating voter suppression, denying Diaspora voters equitable access to voting and disenfrachising Kenyans contrary to the constitution. In addition, the IEBC is imposing a requirement that voters in the mid-west should incur costs that will run into thousand of dollars in order to vote. This requirement is not being imposed on other voters. Exercising the right to vote is a fundamental democratic right enshrined in the law. You will recall the IEBC recently asked for our views on establishing voting centers in the Diaspora. Have those views been put into consideration or was the IEBC survey a cosmetic measure?

In order to make our voices to be heard by the IEBC and Kenyan authorities, the KDDF-MN has started a petition to be signed by all Kenyan Diaspora voters. The petition calls upon the IEBC to establish polling stations that will be accessible to all eligible Kenyan voters. Our position is that the basis of assigning polling centers should be demographic, spatial and logistical considerations rather than the convenience of administrative (diplomatic) stations.

We urge you to sign the petition at:

By signing the petition, we will be making our unequivocal voice against this measure to be heard and, with one accord, calling on the IEBC to establish polling stations in a fair manner. The petition will be sent to the IEBC and all other concerned authorities with a five day period. It is, therefore, important that all Diaspora Kenyans sign this petition.

We are counting on your voice on this matter.
