Kenya: Fair -thee-well Archbishop Dr David Gitari as we Celebrate Heroes’ Day – Why I dedicate my day today to Dr Gitari

From: Shem Ochuodho

It is with great sadness that we celebrate the life of the Late Archbishop Dr David Gitari (http://www.nation.co.ke/counties/Hundreds-attend-Gitari-funeral/-/1107872/2027338/-/whduay/-/index.html), Former Head of the Anglican, even as we commemorate also our Heroes. It is even with equal disappointment that one of the Motions I ever moved while in Parliament (I had been de-whipped for refusing to knee-toe with KANU) was the ‘Heroes Bill/Fund’.

But first, Dr Gitari. He was not only a great man of God, but also of man! I fondly recall three incidences with him:- firstly, in 2001 as the clouds were gathering with the then opposition coming together to dislodge KANU from power, I had the fortune (as Convenor/Secretary of the National Alliance for Change, NAC, that later became NAK before being NARC – and in Swahili meaning Muungano wa Mageuzi http://www.amazon.com/Dawn-Rainbow-Intrigues-Coalition-Government/dp/9966744207) to visit Dr Gitari at his home then next to State House. He was one of the few key Clergy-heads we had to see in our pursuit to find a multi-sectoral team to push the strategy to bring about what we thought would be a ‘Better Kenya 4 All’. Dr Gitari was passionate about democracy and justice for all. And he was brave. Unlike most of our ‘top’ clergy, he rarely looked at things with the ethnic prism!

The second encounter was when NAK/Mageuzi had its first rally in Embu, and he personally turned up to grace and pray for the rally. He was eloquent and very clear in his mind the Kenya we all desired! He didn’t mince words either. At that time, President Kibaki, Late Kijana Wamalwa, Hon Charity Ngilu, Prof Nyong’o and I were in contention for a ‘Compromise’ candidate to take on KANU! Dr Gitari greatly contributed to unifying the opposition!

The third and final time I met him was early this year during the Presidential Debates organized by the Church at All Saints Cathedral. The Gitari I saw was a pale shadow of his old self. He was frail – but the spirit remained strong. As I and a colleague held his hand to walk him to his car – I prayed and wished he had more years to live and share his wealth of experience with other Kenyans, Kenyanists and Africanists. On reaching the car, I handed him an autographed copy of Dawn of a Rainbow (in which he is prominently featured) and bid bye. Little did I know that would be the last to see him!

As we celebrate Heroes’ Day – Dr Gitari is my Hero, and I dedicate today to him. Fair thee well Your Grace, Shujaa Halisi. Greetings to Fr Kaiser (among those to whom Dawn of a Rainbow is dedicated), Bishop Muge, Bishop Okullu, and several other Men and Women of God who dedicated their lives to service of mankind and for the realization of the illusive ‘Better Kenya 4 All’ in our lifetime.

Kenya: Celebrating the life and times of Uncle Andrea Owuor Oswilo

from: odhiambo okecth

Dear Friends,

The weekend was tough on me, very tough.

I was in a function in Nakuru when I received word that my Uncle, my only Uncle Mzee Andrea Owuor Oswilo had passed on at about 4.30pm Saturday the 22nd September 2012.

I was for the first time hit so hard. This has come barely one week after we had buried a Cousin the other weekend.

It has been tough on me this year. I have lost a Brother, a Mother, a Brother-in-Law, several Cousins and the resources can never be enough to handle such cases.

We met as a Family yesterday and we have decided to bury Uncle on the 29th Sept 2012 at his Home in Ndere Alego. We will be meeting with our Friends and Relatives on Wednesday the 26th Sept 2012 at Walkers Restaurant in Nairobi to help plan and fill in the gaps to enable us give Uncle a befitting send-off.

I want to invite Friends who are able to stand with me once more to help me bury my Uncle.

I want to thank Mr. Evans Machera and Mr. Elijah Agevi who have sent me their supports. Thank you and God Bless you:
Mr. Evans Machera- Kshs 500.00
Mr. Elijah Agevi- Kshs 1,000.00

Let us all work for a Clean Kenya as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50, even as we join in celebrating the life and times of my Uncle.

FUND RAISING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR MY LATE SISTER TURFENA AWUOR OWITI.

From: Doc Odotte

Dear Sir/Madam

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my sister Turfena Awuor Owiti who passed away on Wednesday August 29th, 2012 after a short illness at War Memorial Hospital in Nakuru. She was 49 years old.

It extremely heartbreaking because just three weeks ago I was in Kenya and she, her son and her two grand kids came to see me. She was so full of life that no one could even imagine that she would be gone by now. We had the best time together, we laughed, danced, and remembered the good old times when we were growing up. May be she came to say good bye to us. That’s God’s plan and no one can do anything about it, we just ask for your prayers.

Turfena is survived by a son George Otieno and two grand kids Okoth and Koffi. My sister loved me so much that she had one of her grand child named after me. Okoth is named after me. Her husband passed away ten years ago and she was left alone to fend for her son and two grand kids, as her son has no meaningful employment and depended on her for most of his family needs.

I need your help to raise funds to help the family defray some of the hospital expenses, funeral and transportation costs to her final resting place. The body is currently lying at the War Memorial Hospital mortuary in Nakuru.

The harambee will be on Saturday September 8th, 2012 in my house located at 43 Springbrook Rd, Nanuet, New York 10954 from 6pm onward. Kindly come and help me raise the funds to give my sister a decent burial.

KENYA: TEARFUL SEND OFF FOR MUMIAS SUGAR MANAGING DIRECTOR

BY JEFF OTIENO

After a sterling and unrivalled performance spanning almost a decade in the Sugar Industry, Mumias Sugar Managing Director Dr. Evans Odhiambo Kidero has today decided to call it quits in a tearful but a colourful handing over ceremony in the factory precincts which was attended by workers, all departmental heads, farmers and other stakeholders.

The new Chief Executive Peter Kibati described Dr. Kideros tenure as spectacular worth emulating.”We will try our level best to follow your foot steps to continue making Mumias Sugar a force to reckon with in the region”, Kibati told the attentive gathering amid applause.

” Our strategic plan as envisaged must be fulfilled and i urge all of you to accord me the necessary support to achieve the said goals,’ he said a mid tears from a section of workers. Kibati described Kidero’s legacy as wonderful, brilliant intellectual who always consulted and collaborated whenever there was need.

Mr. Kibati initially was at Price Water House Coopers and Standard Chartered Bank Kisumu Branch and later joined the leading Miller as an Internal auditor and rose as Financial Director before taking the mantle from the immediate industrious C.E.O DR. Kidero 3 months ago. According to key industry players who talked to this journalist in the Company Precints, Kibati has got the potential to continue with the foot steps of Dr. Kidero, since he’s young ,equally focussed and energetic.

Former Chairman of Butere Mumias County Council, Councillor Michael Keya added that doubting Thomases will be proved wrong soon urging all the stakeholders to give maximum co-operation to the new C.E.O to achieve the set standards.

Dr. Kidero will be remembered for the general improvement of infrastructure in Mumias and its environs. He was a complete team player who knew all the departmental Managers by their names, hated bureaucracy or red tape and was a go getter.

He joined Mumias Sugar in October 2003, after other rare and magnificent performances at Nation Media Group and Smith Kline Beecham.

Accompanied by his wife Susan Mboya and a Nairobi Businessman Erick Okeyo, Kidero appealed to the workers to continue with the same spirit and added that he will always flex his muscles and be available when there’s a problem to be tackled.

His farewell party is however slated for mid October, 2012 due to logistical reasons.

Kenya: TRIBUTE TO THE LATE NDHIWA MP JOSHUA ORWA OJODE

By Agwanda Saye,

The late Ndhiwa MP and Security Ministry Assistant Minister was finally buried last weekend at his Unga home in Ratang’a within Ndhiwa District in a funeral ceremony attended by a mammoth led by President Mwai Kibaki and other key Government Ministry officials.

I feel indebted to the late Ojode’s family, relatives and friends if I will not eulogize him as a friend whom I really knew and made many knew me as a result of our friendship.

The first time I met the late Ojode was in early 1990’s when as a young tall man he made a surprise visit to my late uncle the former Kisumu Mayor Lawrence Akinyi Oile at his house in Kisian very early one morning while driving a red Mercedes Benz ,actually I had never seen him but the Mercedes made me to be curious of the occupier.

When he alighted from the passenger seat I sawa tall man who sleeves of the shirts could not reach his wrist and the long trouser could not cover his shoes.

I ushered him to the sitting room and they spoke for over two hours before he left.

As we were heading to town with the late Oile, he asked generally in the vehicle if we knew that man, I said know, he told us that the man was called Orwa Ojode and he wanted him with the Baghdad boys which he was controlling to assist him capture Ndhiwa seat which had been left vacant after the defection of the then MP Tom Obondo who had defected to KANU party.

After the by –elections which was marred by thugery and bloodshed Ojode was declared the winner, after that we become friends as any time he passed Kisumu he would always pass by to thank the late Oile for having made his entry to parliament possible.

Our friendship stuck for so long that whenever he alighted at the Kisumu airport as he headed to his Ndhiwa home he would always call me so that I “update” him on any issues.

But the Ojode I knew was a pale shadow of himself immediately after the announcement of the cabinet by the coalition partners when he lamented how he was shortchanged,

By then we were idling at the Lakeview restaurant together with Eng.Okoko and others,Ojode could not understand how he was never made a cabinet Minister despite all that he had done to the ODM party.

I again show his bitterness at the Kisumu Airport one day when school going kids were not being allowed to go to school ostensibly “Unity” Raila Odinga okays.

Ojodeh in anger confronted the then new Assistant Minister for Education Ayiecho Olweny and told him to tell Raila to “allows” kids to go to school since he has the “keys” to “lock and unlock” members of the luo community’s destiny.

Ayiecho omn the other hand retorted that he (Ojode) was equally capable of telling Raila so since he was too an Assistant Minister”koso nyocha usechwanyoru” (or you had parted ways).

The situation was however clamed by the then EALA legislature Clarkson Otieno Karan who castigated me for having brought up the issue which was generating out of hand.

We were together with Housing Minister Soita Shitanda,Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale among others.

Ojode would always call me and whenever I was broke I would tell him and he would bail me out.

He once in April called me to go and visit him but tat day coincided with a very important commitment I had which could not have made it possible that I see him, he called that night wondering why I never made it, later we met in Kisumu and he told him the reason why he wanted to see me.

May God rest his soul in eternal peace

Kenya: Ojoe has left behind a legacy that is only equaled by Cyprian Awiti in terms of generous donations towards socio-economic projects

Writes Leo Odera Omolo.

ALTHOUGH the late Joshua Orwa Ojode had served the government briefly as an Assistant minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration, he has left behind a very attractive record of total commitment to development activities that are of mutual beneficial to his constituents.

Orwa Ojode contributions in cash material could only be equal in comparison to the contributions which has so far been made by two men, namely for powerful Permanent Secretary In the Office of the President, the late Hezekiah N Oyugi, and the retired former country director o Marie Stopple Clinics,Cyprian Otieno Awiti

Ojode had concentrated in developing his Ndhiwa constituency, but Awiti is on record of having criss-crossed the full length and width of the greater Southern Nyanza region making hefty cash donations and contributions towards the various socio-economic projects I nearly all the constituencies, districts and administrative locations.

Awiti who hails from Rachuonyo South district has declared his interest n one of the elective positions in the forthcoming general election. Awiti is aspir9ing to be elected the first governor of Homa-Bay County.

The two men Ojode and Awiti sharply differed ideologically in characters and religion wise. Ojode is a member of he Seventh Day Adventists Church {SDA} whereas Cyprian Awiti is a staunch member of the Roman Catholic Church.

Audited statistic of donations made by individuals towards the various socio-economic projects in the entire greater Southern Nyanza has revealed that Cyprian Awiti leading the rest only to be followed Ojode and the late PS Oyugi the three men are credited for having donated generously toward the various development activities, which included educational facilities and institutions, health centers, dispensaries, women groups, water project and other essential infrastructure which are relevant to the development of rural areas.

The Homa-Bay County and the jurisdiction of the would be governor covered close to eight parliamentary constituencies. The area is so long covering widest area from Sondu Town to Nyandiwa in Gwassi {now Suba South district], Mbita { now Suba North district and winding up in Mfangano Island right in the middle of Lake Victoria.

The constituencies include Kasipul-Kabondo, Kasipul, Karachuonyo, Rangwe, Homa-Bay Town, Ndhiwa, Suba North and Suba South.

The country also covering several small fishing islands located inside Lake Victoria such as Ringiti, Rehemba, Lolwe,Takawiri, Ngodhe, Oyamo Sikri, Soklo Kipenji { or Soklo Kubanga} and other smaller ones. The person who will win the governorship will have to travel along distances visiting and supervising the administration of the dozens of fishing island, which are located inside Lake Victoria.

It will a daunting and highly tasking job or the new governor. This is why the electorate in the region wanted somebody with the widest administrative experience coupe with financial discipline.

The majority of the electorate stretching from Gwassi, Mbita, Mfangano and Rusinga sIands have been heard talking good and in favor of Cyrian Awiti as the most suitable person who can serve them sincerely and with dedication as their next government. It is a political office in which the holder also need.

Given his experience at Marie Stopie Clinic’s, though it is only an international NGO with countrywide branches, Awiti is seen as mature and serious person for the job.

Awiti hails near Mawego R.C. mission and next to Mawego Technical College and Mawego Girls Secondary School both which are run and managed by he Diocese of Homa-Bay is credited for having made his personal cash contributions and donations toward the development projects indiscriminately and without giving preference to any of the projects, which are located in his home turf home turf of Karachuonyo.

Ojode and Awiti were very close friends. On several occasions Awiti was invited by Ojode to Ndhiwa for major fund drive while Ojode reciprocated by visiting Rachuonyo region and presiding over successful fund drives for the various projects.

Had Ojode lived on to witness the next general election, Awiti could have harvest nearly 100 per cent of votes in the vote rich Ndhiwa constituency to realize his ambition for the governorship. It is, however, hoped that Ndhiwa constituents who have benefited immensely from Awiti during Ojode’s lifetime, would give him the sympathy votes as someone who had worked closely with the deceased MP.

Awiti is currently leading the pack of three aspirants who include Eng Philip Okoth Okundi, and the Microsoft executive Dr Mark Matunga. Okundi is from Rangwe, while Matunga hails from Mfangano Island in the Suba North constituency.

Kenya: The late Orwa Ojode is another departed political giant of our time in greater Southern Nyanza

Leo Odera Omolo Mourns the fallen hero.

The late Joshua Orwa Ojode, the Assistant minister for Internal Security and Provincial Administration who died in sorrowful tragedy of a helicopter crash on Sunday morning is arguably to be remembered for many years to come by we the residents of the greater Southern Nyanza region as our of the departed soul of the giants of our time.

The first such giants was the late Thomas Joseph Mboya, and the second one was the late Hezekiah Nelson Oyugi[Kalambe ng’ongo wuon Ogango].

These great names are in addition to the late Mzee Paul Mboya {Oluwal Janyakongo wuon Akoko} who died of old age close to a decade ago after dominating the administrative circles of the region for many years ever since 1946.

These are the men who had shaped the Southern Nyanza region, and the future historian will always use their pens wisely by quoting them favorably in connection with the massive development that the region has received ever since 1950s.

Paul Mboya Akoko was in his own class during the colonial era after dropping down his last chalk at Gendia Mission Primary School where he was a teacher briefly before being promoted to the coveted position of the SDA Mission Pastor.

From the pulpit, there was no looking back. Paul Mboya became the 6th Location Chief of the larger Karachuonyo Location around 1922 after five other Chiefs had already rule the location and lost their jobs for one reason or the othee..The first location Chie of Karchuonyo was a medicine man allied with Nyakiti ogutu who was later discovered to have been an immigrant from across the Kivirondo Gulf in Seme.

The colonial authority then appointed one Oganyo Odero, who resign in huff and left the chieftain to ne Okoth Wuon Ougo, and the third Chief was one called Orinda. After Orinda then came Chief Dola Maira and after Dola Maira came Paul Mboya.

Due to his administrative prowess Paul Mboya was appointed the first Secretary of the then African Local Native Council {ALNC} in 1946. The ALNC for South Nyanza’ area of jurisdiction covered what is now common called Gusii region. The Council’s office were based in Kisii Town.

Paul Mboya was among the top African Administrators who were invited by His Majesty Government of King George V1 to attend the famous “Victory Parade in Central London.

The ALNC transformed itself to African District Council of South Nyanza in 1952and Mboya continued serving in the same capacity. He had a lot of influence in the region making his word sounded like a law of the land.

Paul Mboya was once again among the skillfully selected administrator from Anglophone colonies in African continent who were invited to London during he coronation marking the enthronement of Queen Elizabeth 11 June 1963.

He earned series of high class British Medals including Member of the British Empire {MBE} and the Order of the British Empire {OBE} and {CBE} for his exemplary service to the British. In 1961 he was appointed he first Secretary to the larger County Council of South Nyanza following the split of the former African District Council based at Kisii and he then moved to the new offices at Homa-Bay Town after the separation of the Kisiis and the Luos.

Paul Mboya retired from the public service in 1962 one year beore the country attained its political independence in June 1963 and later served the community as the overall and disputed chairman of the powerful Luo Union {East Africa} “Ker” until 1978.

In the late 1950s a youthful politician who outwitted the colonialist with his oratory and high command of political English called Thomas Joseph Mboya who entered into the colonial Legislative Council on in March 1957 as one of the first eight African elected Legco members.

Mboya {not related to Paul Mboya}fame came following his activities as a tade unionist during the State of Emergency which was declared in Kenya on October 20, 1952 by the then colonial governor Sri Evelyn Baring as a result of intensified Mau Mau activities in Nairobi, Rift Valley and some part of Central Province.

Mboya began his political career as a mere shop steward in the Health Sanitation section of the City Council of Nairobi. The Staff Association transformed itself in to the Kenya Local Government Workers Union {KLGWU}

Immediately after this Tom Mboya quickly rose to fame during the state of emergency with Mboya bravely issuing hundreds of anti-colonialists and white settlers press statements in defense of the oppressed African population. In the absence of any countrywide political movement after the banning of Kenya African Union {KAU} it was only the KFl through Mboya who expressed the African aspiration and his activities earned him recognition by the liberal minded British Labour Party MPs in the House of Common. Through his connections with the British Labour Party MPs and the British Trade Union Congress {TUC} Mboya won a one year scholarship to study English, Literature history and economics at the Ruskin College, Oxfordin 1955.

And while studying in the UK Mboya continued issuing inflammatory anti settlers and colonialism articles to the British, some of which were published and re-produced in Kenya press provoking sharp condemnation of Mboya by the White Settlers leaders, some of them called for his expulsion from the UK and possible arrest and detention.

He returned home in 1956 a much shaped and armed with very sharp English, the youthful trade unionist gave the colonial authorities in Kenya sleepless nights.

The Rightwing leader of the Settlers the late Group Captain L.R.Briggs who headed the all whites United Party, which declared that Kenya should be only a dominion like Southern and Northern Rhodesia called for Mboya’s detention along with those suspected of organizing and managing the Mau Mau uprising.Rhodesia.

The then Prime Minister of the Central African Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland Sir Roy Welensky, and the Prime Minister of Southern Rhodesia wee in agreement with the Prime Minister ofr Southern Rhodesia Garfield Todd and the Governor of Nyasaland Sir Sobert Armitage declared Mboya a banned person I any of the three countries and non-granta persona in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.

Mboya’s meteoric rise came soon after his entry into Colonial Legislative Council where he engaged the colonial authorities and the majority members who white settlers in crucial motion after motion calling for the repealing for discriminative laws against African and discriminative wages against educated Africans performing the same job and other inhuman treatment mated out to Africans

Mboya became a globe totting politician and his voice echoed all over the world effectively putting African viewpoints against colonialism in major world forums.

His skills and organizational ability saw him clinching the post of Secretary-General of KANU at the party inception at Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu Town in June 1960 the post which he held p to his death on July 5,1969. He also defended his KFL position until up to the coming of political independence in 1963 when he was appointed to the cabinet in the post independence cabinet headed by the late President Jomo Kenyatta. First as the Minister for Labour in the short-lived KADU-KANU Coalition government, later as the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and lastly as the Minister for Planning and Economic Development.

It wa during hi six years in the cabinet that Mboya shaped up development in Southern Nyanza 5egion influencing the construction of Ahero-Kisii-Migori road in 1967, development o schools like Ogande Girls, Asumbi Girls, Homa-Bay High School, Mbita High School Agoro-Sare Secondary Schools, Asumbi T.T.C. Tonga Secondary School, St Joseph Rapogi High School and so many other development projects for the promotion of socio-economic of the region.

Mboya’s life was cut short by an assassin hail of bullets on 5th July, 196. His death brought the then flourishing development in the greater Southern Nyanza region to a halt and standstill.

After Mboya Hezekiah N.Oyugi, a primary school teacher turned administrator emerged as the most powerful individual in the greater Southern Nyanza.

Due to human error and miscalculation of judgement, Oyugi’s influence also came to an abrupt end in the early 1990 following h John Robert Ouko’s saga and the region slipped back in terms of fast development.

Oyugi played a big role of promoting an improving some of the development projects which ha experienced slackness after Mboya’s death a decade earlier.

In 1994 Joshua Orwa Ojde the son of a former colonial Assistant Chief Ojode Otieno from the Kamdar sub-clan of the larger Kwabwayi sub-clan in what used to be called West Nyokal Location won a parliamentary seat for Ndhiwa following the defection of Tom Okello Obondo who had won the Ndhiwa parliamentary seat on Oginga Odinga”s Ford Kenya party ticket. Obondo defected back to KANU, but Obondo failed miserably in his attempt to defend his seat on a KANU ticket..

The abrasive Orwa Ojode inherited a parliamentary constituency which was considered by many as the most backward in the entire Southern Nyanza.

The tough talking legislator died in an helicopter mishap at the time when Ndhiwa had become the envious of everyone in the region. All secondry and primary schools constructed on permanent building materials.

Access and feeder roads criss-crossing the entire constituency everywhere including those areas which had never seen a motor vehicle before. Electricity supply to all primary and secondary school and other institutions

Each one of the close to twenty four administrative location has a dispensary and fully stocked with medicine health centers.

KENYA: TRIBUTE TO THE LATE NOAH IMBAYA

By Agwanda Saye

The late journalist Noah Imbaya Ndaklu was finally laid to rest at his father’s home in Eshikhuyu Village,Ebukanga Sub-Location,Bunyore Central Location ,Luanda Division in Emuhaya District.

His death news was broken to me by Vihiga County reporter Nahashon Obwonya who work me early that Sunday telling me the devastating news.

“Agwanda, your friend Imbaya is dead” he told me and two hours later I was surprised to his phone ringing only for his wife Beatrice to tell me the same

I never had an opportunity to attend his burial which I would have really wished to but circumstances beyond me would not have allowed.

I will eternally be indebted to the entire “Citizen Weekly” fraternity and the entirely family of “Msakhulu” Nabule if I do not say one or two things about the late “Mwalimu” as he was known.

I knew the late while he was at their Moi Avenue offices and anytime I passed by I would always find him buried in past and current editions of publications “digging” into stories as he usually says.

Imbaya never had a desire for much and he never made unrealistic demands from colleagues, he also was a man who would keep his words and a promise he made with you would be as he said always”itakuwa tu hivyo”

Whenever he was home from the City he would asked me if I would be paying for his”Nya Ugenya or Msamaria Mwema” fare back to the city.

All the “deals” I ever made with him he never failed on his part to complete, whenever he assured you that your request is granted he never reneged on it.

The “few news sources” I ever introduced him with never at no time ever lamented to me that he was neither “a bother nor an irritant”.

To sum it all, Imbaya was a man who to me kept his word in any arrangement you made with me, whether socially or professionally.

He knew the perimeters of “a deal” and never mixed his social issues with “serious news sources” at times the said people I introduced him to would always ask me why he never always communicated with them.

He was born on 5th August 1972 to Mzee Simon Ndakalu Nabule and Mama Roda Ndakalu Nabule of Eshikhuyu Village.

He has left behind a widow Beatrice Auma and three Children,he started his Primary School at Lunga Lunga then Emukhunzulu where he did his KCPE ,he joined Emusire High School and excelled in his KCSE exams then joined Moi University Eldoret where he graduated with a BA degree in Linguistics and Sociology.

Upon graduating ,he was employed as a high school teacher in various secondary Schools such as Emusire, Emabyima, Essabra and lastly Eshibinga before joining “Weekly Citizen” as a sub editor Per excellence,

As his colleagues say he was an intellectual per excellence and his incisive and probing mind and in his transition at such a tender age the family lost a breadwinner.

“His quaint sense of humor will forever etch smiles on the faces of those lucky to have worked or socialized with him” his colleagues at Headlink Publishers Ltd lamented.

He died after short illness at St.Francis Hospital Mortuary

KENYA: THOUSANDS OF MOURNERS GAVE A TEARFUL SENDING OFF A PROMINENT LADY FARMER IN KASIPUL-KABONDO WHO HAD PIONEERED INTO MODERN FARMING.

Writes Bob Ndira-Uradi in Oyugis Town.

THOUSANDS of mourners on the Easter Monday gave a tearful farewell to a prominent woman farmer and church leader in Kaipul-Kabondo in Rachuonyo South district within Homa-bay County.

Mrs Dorcas Akeyo J.Oyugi-Ogot was laid to rest next to her late husband James Oyugi-Ogot near their palatial home near Mikaye market in Kakelo Location, Kasipul-Kabondo, Rachuonyo South district within Homa-Bay County.

The deceased husband the late James Oyugi Ogot, was a top educationist who rose through the ranks from a classroom teacher and retired as the District Education Office {DEO} in Siaya district about ten years ago.

The couple had pioneered into modern farming three decades ago. They introduced top grade dairy cows in their farm, which is located next to the main Oyugis- Kisumu road as early as 1967.

The couple had also pioneered into other cash crops, and for many years the farm has served as the roll model in the region. It is layout and plan was late to attract the Ministry of Agriculture and the Provincial Administration in Nyanza which on many occasions had used the farm as an Agricultural Field Day where many farmers from other parts of the greater Southern Nyanza region were invited for training on new method of farming technology and better crops husbandry.

A devoted Christian Mrs Oyugi was a staunch member of the SDA church and had acted on many occasions as the church leader, making her the most influential woman within the community.

The otherwise a solemn burial ceremony of a highly respected woman was almost marred by political confrontation between women leaders n the area who vehemently objected and protested against the derogatory remarks by the ODM Coordinator in Nyanza Mrs Monica Amolo who was engaged in sharp exchange with Ker Meshack Riga Ogalo of the Luo Council of Elders and Mrs Roselyn Onyiuka who is contesting the Homa-Bay Women representative seat.

The burial brought together the largest number of politicians in the region. Among them was the former two times MP for Karachuoyo Dr Mrs Phoebe M Asiyo, Prof Otieno Muga, the Vice Chancellor o the Great Lakes University Kisumu, the chairman of the Luo Council of Elders Ker Meshack Riaga Ogalo, former Nyanza PDE, Mrs Roselyn Onyuka who is contesting the Homa-Bay County women Representtive in Parlament, her rival for the sme position Mrs Gladys Wanga and others.

Other included several aspirants for the newly created Kasipul-Kabondo constituency, which was recently separated from the old Kasipul. They included Hebert Ojwang’ who acted as the master of ceremony, Enock Ogutu, Prof. Otieno Muga, the former MP for the old Kasipul-Kabondo William Oloo Otula, who declared to the huge crowd that he would be contesting the election in the old Kasipul constituency.

In her address Dr Mrs Asiyo advised the leaders in the region to rebrand themselves and move to the neighboring community and canvass for Raila Odinga’s presidential votes. “You should stop the petty political squabbles among yourselves to other regions to campaign for the ODM leader to realize his presidential ambition.

Ker Meshack Riaga Ogalo also gave similar advice to the mourners telling those able to move out of the region and elates well with the residents of the neighboring communities like the Kisiis, Kalenjin, Luhyia with the mission to persuade them to support Raila Odinga and the ODM to win the next general election.

The burial ceremony nearly got marred by chaos following the derogatory remarks made by the ODM Coordinator in Nyanza Mrs Monica Amolo. The mourner accused Mrs Amolo of bad mouthing other leaders, particularly when she scathingly criticized the former PDE Mrs Roselyn Onyuka who is vying for the position of the County woman representative in parliament.

The attack on high profile former PDE did not go down well in an area which is her home ground provoking strong protest by the mourners followed by wildcat calls.

Mrs Onyuka who was born in Mbita in Suba region is marred in Kasipul-Kabondo and her people had to be restrained from acting violently against Mrs Amolo, though some women were heard hurling insults to her.

In her address to the mourner Mr Onyuka narrated her past achievements during her services as the senior Principal of St. Albert Ulanda Girls High School and later how she struggled and revived the hitherto run-down Asumbi Teachers Training College and later how her position as the Nyanza PDE saw schools in the region rejuvenated and shinned again coming on top of other regions in the national exams. She received standing ovation fro the mourners who endorsed her candidature and gave her go ahead signals.

She told the mourners that she has what it takes to be called track record of achievement an diligent service to the community.

During the meeting mourners were heard blaming some vernacular FM Radio stations which some people have been frequently using to malign their perceived political opponents on patent. Other mourners were heard shouting that the CCK should investigate those station wh9ch are used by politician to slender their rivals and by engaging in destructive political propaganda. One man shouted the names of several FM Radio Station which he said were notorious for allowing sponsored propaganda materials and pack of lies saying they should be shut down b y he government unless those running them at responsibly not to allow their stations to be used a instrumental tool of distortion

The confrontation started following the remark made Prof.Muga who inadvertently referred to the Ker Meshack Riaga as the “Former Ker of the Luo Council of Elders. But Mzee Riaga in a foot-note reaction stood on his feet and protested saying that his role and status quo as the “Ker” has remained unchanged. The other Ker Opiyo Otondi, he said was make up of politicians, whereas he remained the true Ker of the Luo community until his death an that is what the Council’s constitutions says.”

The late Mrs Oyugis was the mother of Dr Kenneth Kambona a top agronomist who is the regional adviser to the UNDP and prospective contestant for the Kasipul-Kabond parliamentary seat. She left behind eight children all of them grown up.
