I think Farming Business touches in one way or another the Cooperative Sector.

How far have we reached with the revitallizing of the Cooperative Societies in Tanzania as far as the Farming Business is concerned.

Hodi!

“Kilimo Kwanza” the policy says it all.

One can only be proud if one can feed his/her stomach! That brings memories of 1980’s when people grew food crops, kept chicken – some went to the extent of keeping animals within the municipals. Going to shamba’s on weekends was the life-style. That little that was produced made a big difference to ones earnings and at least a tomato on the table from the garden – it saved a few shillings also kept one busy (not spending a day at Container bars for those in towns)

WHERE DID ALL THAT GO?

There was a number of benefits and abuses as well eg. some officers used public facilities 9and time) available to them to attend to the needs of their various food production projects. There were some environmental issue to some (can you imagine your neighbour keeping pigs?).

YES: Farming does not have to be a big business to make a difference. It is the principle that matters! Food importation could be reduced.

CASH CROPS and FOOD SECURITY is an equation that needs to be balanced properly by countries that are endowed with cultivatable land.

Economical and Social pressure to earn foreign exchange is unavoidable but one should not buy and excavate fertile land looking for minerals; where will the neighbourhood produce food from? Employing them as watchmen and labourers is not sustainable and – what happens should the price of minerals fall..?.

“Producing what you can not Consume and Consuming what you can not Produce” is a sure strategy for insecurity.

This world is very dynamic!

Hi Wanabidii, Tanzania’s poverty solely comes from our poor brains.

When Tz tampered with coop unions I agriculture it killed the agricultural sector. Poor peasants can’t get inputs on time, can’t market their produce, can’t process perishables like fruits etc. there is no place
for a peasant to learn how to produce any agricultural crop be it cash
or food. There were crop authorities; coffee, tea, cashew nuts, sisal
you name it all were merely selling agents with little or no help to
peasants. There was RUBADA and several NAFCO farms how could they die knowing Tz is saying agriculture is the main stay of the economy????

We have to change our attitudes, crops which can completely change our incomes need not be the ones we are used to exporting, passion fruits, flowers, etc

Before in Tanzania farming used to be one of our major source of
income, even, it is number one before Minerals take over everything.
but now to my suprise majority of the people don’t even think about anymore. to me Tanzania is a country that is naturaly blessed with
good land and why can’t we go back to farming and establish a large
scale farming industry.

let me know your opinion over this. together we can make changes.
