Burundi’s First Vice-President, Terence Sinunguruza, has resigned from his post, his spokesperson Catherine Mabobori announced on Monday evening.

In a declaration earlier in the day, Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza through his spokesman Leonidas Hatungimana, had urged Sinunguruza to “take his responsibilities” with regard to calls made by Sinunguruza’sUnion pour le Progres National (Uprona) party urging him to resign from his position.

The executive committee of Uprona had on October 5 accused Sinunguruza of working for his “own interests” and not the national interest or the party’s interests.

It urged the Burundi president to replace him.

However, Sinunguruza denied all the allegations levelled against him.
