Kenya: Minister Nyong’o in a political dilemma as he tied to win the coveted Kisumu County Senate seat against the odds

Reports Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City.

The weekend endorsement for the Health Services Minister Prof Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o to vie for the Kisumu County senate seat has been received wit mixed reaction by the electorate in the region.

Observers and political pundits were quick in pointing out that Prof. Nyong’’s quest for the senate seat would be a daunted if not an uphill task, while others have described the move as political suicide.

Nyong’o is the current MP or Kisumu Rural, a rural constituency, which has since been disbanded by the IEBC, which has realigned and splinted into three, namely Seme, Kisumu town West and Kisumu Central.

The Minister has represented Kisumu Rural eve since 1992 first multi-party elections on a Ford Kenya ticket, but was rested by the voters in 1997 and was only re-elected back to parliament on an n LDP ticket in 2002 after a five years in political limbo only after reportedly being reconciled with Raila Odinga.

Nyong’o is facing Equally powerful, influential, resourceful Nairobi base businessmen in the name of En Maxwell Otieno Odongo of Otieno Odongo and Partners Engineering Company and a Nairobi base architect Ocholla Ogoda the former poplar Gor Mahia Football Club chairman.

Local pundits say his chances of clinching the Kisumu County Senate seat are very remote if not a pipe dream.

Information reaching us says Prof Nyong’o has never been a highly performer MP at the local political derby. His detractors are accusing of being a very mean and extremely thrift person tot worth to be a politician.

His lackluster and dismal performance at the constituency level has contributed a great deal to his poor performance resulting in bad blood between him and his constituents.

At the national political area, the Professor has been the principal spokesman of the ODM o mater related to the party policy and ideological guidance. He had always had the sole of the most formidable defender on the part leader Raila Odinga. Perhaps this is what has prompted the Minister to shift his political base from his Seme Rural constituency to Kisumu County an area with the largest cosmopolitan voters in the hope that Raila Odinga will come to his aid and bail him out of shameful d Senate.

The MPs move in backing and endorsing Nyong’o or the Kisumu County Senate seat, however, is faulted by many people who described it as an attempt impose leadership on the voters. Some o the MPs who came to Kisumu to drum up the support for Nyong’o, however, are themselves facing lean time in their respective constituencies, and quite a few of them will be kicked out. So they would only cause Pro Nyong’o more trouble.

One of Prof Nyong’o’s most credible opponents is Eng. Maxell Otieno Odongo, who hails from the populous Kano sub-clan, which is well spread I the three administrative districts of Nyando, Muhoroni and part of Kisumu is arguably posing a real threat to Nyong’o’s ambition. It is said that if the clans arithmetic could work in Odongo’s favor then Prof Nyong’o is going to nowhere.

The other aspirant, Ochola Ogoda hails from another populous clan of Nyakach. He has settled in Muhoron Settement scheme where the presence of people whose original home is from Nakch is formidable. Ogoda, would therefore claim most of the voter fro Nyakach district, while Nyong;o whose relations with the electorate in hi s home turf of Seme s aid not to be all that much cordial could face uncertain political future if cannot re-brand himself.
Otieno Odongo is a flamboyant industrialists-cum-business tycoon who had employed so many people in his own establishment, which span from large scale sugar cane farming, tourist hotels, engineering firm with an international outlet, milling and also involve in the rice milling business in Ahero and elsewhere.

Immediately after the launching of Prof.Nyong’o Senate campaign, the dreadful rumor went around that the six ODM who attended the ceremony had agreed on an MOU called to mount a joint campaign aimed at scuttling Engineer Odogo’s campaign or the Senate seat Stop Otieno Odongo [SOO} campaign to scuttle Eng. Odongo elaborate campaign. The Engineer had launched his own campaign at the same venue two weeks ago, which attracted thousands of people from all the seven constituencies that form the Kiumu County.

The constituencies are Nakach, Muhoroni, Nyando, Kisumu Town East, Kisumu Central, Kisumu Tow West and the newly created Seme constituency.
Commonly known to his peers as “The Aga Khan” as the result of his generosity towards the down trodden poor people.Eng Oteno Odongo one of the wealthiest Luos is said to be very generous and had helped in paying school fees for hundreds of students from the poor families acquire education, ad is known for making hefty donate towards the local community projects.

KENYA: THE MUCH FLAWED ODM PRELIMINARY NOMINATION IN NDHIWA BY-ELECTION WOULD DE FRANCHISE THOUSANDS OF VOTERS IF IT IS ALLOWED TO STAND AS IT IS.

Commentary By Leo Odera Omolo In Homa-Bay Town.

So they say in legal terms that justice delayed is justice denied. This I may add by coining another word that “the voting delayed is a denial of democratic rights of the electorate.”

The last Sunday ODM preliminary nomination in the just concluded, but much flawed Ndhiwa by-election was a total sham, and a big shame to the party that has always been boasting of championing the essence of he democratic principles in this country.

Thousands of the constituents who turned out in their big numbers to vote for a candidate of their choice were badly let down by poor management of the by-election, poor logistics and the disappearance of election material, non-arrival of ballot papers at the poling stations, which are scattered all over the expansive rural constituency.

It is even shameful to say that the distance between Ndhiwa Town and Ratang’a, which is the late Joshua Orwa Ojode’s rural home is hardly seven kilometers apart. The two centers are linked by the Rodi-Sori road which is beautifully tarmac ked and could take hardly ten minutes drive. The election materials and ballot papers from Ndhjiwa Town arrived at Ratang’a at about 4.15 p.m long after the would be voters had dispersed and went home after waiting for the election materials from as early a 7.a.m. What a mess?

Owing to the logistics problems experienced all over Ndhiwa only 7,278 voters managed to cast their votes in a constituency which boasts close to 80,000 registered voters. The voters had turned out o enthusiastically read to exercise their democratic rights in voting in their new MP.

They sang and danced at the various polling station, but in some places waited for the whole day without the election officials on sight. This later was to become the source of fist fights and mayhem that were witnessed at the various stations. The voters had become impotent and suspicious that their preferable candidates were about to be rigged out of the race after waiting for the whole day without seeing the election materials.

It was a total flop, and its time the ODM electoral board headed by Eng.Philip Okoth Okundi and its entire directors were shown the exit door by the party headquarters at the Orange House in Nairobi.

Alternatively, political parties which cannot organize and manage their own preliminaries be compelled to seek assistance and help from the IEBC.

The story has been the same ever since 2007showing clear proof that the ODM is incapable of of organizing an efficient and peaceful preliminaries on its own in the by-elections that have come and gone. This is perhaps the reason why the party which is led by he Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has lost in nearly all the by-elections it had participated ever since 2007 starting with the one which was held in Ainamoi in Kericho district following the death of the former MP for the area the late David Too who was shot and killed by a policeman in Eldoret .

In all the previous by-elections held countrywide in the recent past the ODM had lost due to its haphazardly and inefficiently managed by-election which have ended with numerous complaints by participants of highly rigged by-elections. Ndhiwa should serve as the shining example. There was no logistic problem in the area. All the access and feeder roads are passable and in good condition wit one major highway traversing the entire constituency from Rodi-Kopany in the neighboring Rangwe constituency in Homa-Bay district winding up at Sori in Karungu Bay in Nyatike constituency.

The election s official were nowhere raising temperature of the voters who set upon those few officials who showed up late, but half-heartedly with kicks and other crude weapons almost marred the exercise following the outbreak of sporadic of fist fighting everywhere The ODM is to be blamed.

The worse part of the exercise is the unconfirmed claims and allegation to the effect that Agustino Neto Oyugi, the youthful politician who emerged the winner of the much flawed nomination has been working as the campaign manager of Eng Phillip Okundi, the chairman of the ODM election board who is also currently campaigning for the coveted position Homa-Bay County governor.

The 12 hours delay in announcing the outcome of the preliminary nomination exercise where Neto was reported to have garnered 4,278 votes, while the 21 other aspirants received a combined figures of 3,000 votes has escalated the suspicious that the winner might have been rigged in by a plan hatched by the board chairman. There was no indication as to who was number two, number three and so forth.

Taking into account the allegation that the winner is closely connected to Okundi, there is all the significant aspect of conspiracy to deprive the Ndhiwa electorate of their constitutional rights of picking up a popular Mp of their own choice. And justice can only be seen as being done, if the could issue an orders for the repeat of Ndhiwa by-election. Such irregularities like those witnessed in Ndhiwa last Sunday could hurt the ODM successes in the impending general election schedule for Mach 3, 2013 and even impact negatively on Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.

Ndhiwa by-election preliminary nomination is a clear mockery of the tenets of democracy and must be declared null and void in the interest of democracy

Other aspirants had their names missing from the ballot papers in as many as in twenty polling stations. What a mess. One Jeremiah Owiti who is known to his peers as “Jero” had his name missing from ballot papers in nearly every polling station.

In all fairness, the ODM headquarters must order for the repeat of the Ndhiwa preliminary nomination exercise

Among the candidates who have already declared their intention to contest this highly lucrative position included academic luminaries, business magnates, entrepreneurs and seasoned politicians as well as the most highly experienced administrator’s per-excellence

However, one of the leading aspirants has come out in the open and issued a challenge to his opponents to discard what he described as “the retrogressive clans and tribalism politics.

Peter Hongo a senior marketing -guru with the Mumias Sugar Company said everyone should be eligible and free to contest any elective position so long as he or she is a Kenyan citizen irrespective of his birthplace or places of originality.

All the aspirants must preach the gospel of peace and love and articulate to the electorate their party and individual policies in regards to service delivery to the voters..

“it is very essential that the candidates must exhibit the politics of maturity and preach only for peace and tranquility which is devoid of acts of violence and political thuggery.” said Hongo.

Hongo who hails fro Kisumo East Location in Kisumu Town West constituency within Kisumu County for along time has been the marketing manager of the Mumias Sugar Company, and the man behind the company’s sales success story during the genius managerial prowess during the reign of the former Managing Director Dr. Evans Otieno Kidero who has sine retired from the company services and is now aspiring to become the first City governor of Nairobi under the new constitutional dispensation arrangement.

The soft-spoken and stoutly built Hongo says he had all what it takes to be the County governor in Kisumu region and that if elected to the position he would use hi wealth of experience

One of his worthy opponent is equally an experienced manager. He is Ojawng’ K’ombudo former long serving Kisumu Town Clerk, who had switched to politics and was made the Regional Development Minister under the KANU last regime of the retired President Daniel Arap Moi. K’ombudo who is a very successful businessman in Kisumu Tow had served as a two terms MP for Nyakach constituency.

The same position ha attracted a former senior accountant with the Kenya Revenue Authority {KRA] Jack Ranguma who at time was the joint official receiver manager for Miwani and Muhoroni sugar companies. He hails from West Kano in Nyando district.

Also reported to be in the race is a senior lecturer in one of the US based universities Dr Barrack Abonyo, who is a close friend of the Prime Minster Raila Odinga.Abonyo also hails fro Kano plains in Nyando district and has been an instrumental in raising fund for Raila’s campaign kitty in the US. He is being credited as one of the strongest Raila supporters in the diaspora.

Dr. Makobewa a 40 year old trained medical doctor who is also the executive director of OGRA FOUNDATION an NGO with the strong British government financial support. Dr Makobewa who runs chains of ultra modern medium size hotels in Kisumu City also hail from Kano Plains. His candidature is reported to have bee endorsed by the elder from Kano clans sending out negative signal of clan’s politics involvement in the race or Kisumu County governor position.

The race for Kisumu governor has also attracted the younger sister of the Prime Minister Raila Odinga Ms Ruth Adhiambo Odinga who is the managing director of the Odinga family business flagship, The Spectre International which is runs and managing the Kisumu Molasses plant near Otonglo Market n the outskirt of Kisumu City.

Also I the race is the youthful insurance executive I London an Nairobi Simon Ogendo, who is the son of the former Kisumu Mayor, the late Ogendo Ponge. Ogendo, hails from Kolwa Location around Nyamasaria suburb in the outskirt Kisumu City, and is candidature is said to be attracting mostly youths ad women groups.

Kisumu County which covers six parliamentary electoral areas of Seme, Kisumu Town East, Kisumu Central, Kisumu Town East, Nyando, Muhoroni an Nyakach has the vast resources such as fish, tourism spots, farming with sugar cane and sugar factories as the mainstay of its economy need the right people at the helm of the County governance in order to turn it. This requires men and women of proven ability and experience to manage it and turn it around.

Kisumu City recently acquired the multibillion shillings new Kisumu Airport, which is soon expected to serve larger passenger planes. The site is the getaway to East African countries and cities with good connection to other destinations in the region b either roads and by air.

Already the Cit is hosting several secretariats of the East African Community whose senior and junior staff need good housing accommodation.

However, Kisumu City is the only major urban center in Kenya without functioning manufacturing industries. All the major industries such as the Kenya Breweries plant, Kisumu Cotton Mills Limited, Kibos Industries and others closed down a decade ago, splitting hundreds youth out of employment. The new Count top leader will have a daunting task of working toward the rehabilitation of the ’ closed down industries and possible establishment of new ones to absorb hundred of thousand of jobless youths who have since became a real security menace to the city dwellers, especially the school lever. The city woes could be rightly attributed as having been caused by politically motivated and economical marginalization of the Luo-Nyanza region by he previous KANU regimes.

WORSHIPPERS and faithful too to their heels and fled in great stampede in Western Kenya town of Nakuru about 100 kilometers southwest of the capital city, Nairobi after they found a wild lion had strayed I the church compound the previous night and was roaming about menacingly.

Powerful Tanzania is threatening the tiny neighboring Malai with military action over the disputed oil and gas exploration in Lake Nyasa which is shared by the two nations

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo

Reports emerging from both Dar E Salaam and Lilongwe says Malawi which is currently locked up in serious dispute with the neighboring Tanzania over the oil and gas exploration in Lake Nyansa has now withdrawn aero planes that were making aerial mapping of Lake Nyasa which is also known as lake Malawi, after Tanzania warned the exercise was in a violation of its territorial waters.

Tension has been building up in recent weeks over Malawian oil exploration in the lake, which is shared by the two countries as well as ferries and tourist boats ”intruding into Tanzanian waters.”

Malawi claims the entire lake as its own, but Tanzania insists the border between the two countries runs through the middle of the lake.

The matter has remained unresolved since the two neighboring nations gained political independence in early 1950s.

Local but impeccable sources from KASUMBU IN Kyela district – a bust dusty town which is located on the border has revealed in a telephone interview that the planes are no longer flying in the area.

‘Life here continues to be normal; all the talks about tension with Malawi emanates from Dar Es Salaam”, said one villager who is a resident in Lusungo who requested for his anonymity.

However, villagers’ of the Malawi side of the border are reported to have fled and abandoned their homes, fearing that war could break out at any time.

MeanwhileTanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Benard Membe recently told hushed parliamentary session in the Central Tanzanian City of Dodoma that Malawi must cease oil and gas exploration on the disputed lake. All diplomatic channels could be exhausted in order to resolve the simmering border conflict, he said.

However, the former Tanzania’s Prime Minister Edward Lowassa who is now the chairman of his country’s Parliamentary committee on defense, security and foreign affairs was last week quoted by he local media as saying that Tanzania was ready to go to war if need be.

“We know the cost of war, because of our experience in Uganda. We urge the government, a the Foreign Affairs Minister said in parliament, that let’s exhaust all the diplomatic channels, but we are ready to defend our sovereignty at any cost”, said Lowassa.

Lowassa as speaking to newsmen after a briefing by senior Tanzania People Defense Forces officers who told his committee that the army is prepared for a military confrontation, should diplomacy fail.

“We are satisfied with progress being made by the government o the diplomatic front, but military preparations must also be made to make sure all options are available when it comes to making the final decision,’ the former Prime Minister said

Earlier Malawi had vowed to continue with oil and gas exploration in the lake, defiantly dismissing the demand by Tanzania to halt prospecting.

“We categorically put it to them that, said far as we are concerned, the entire lake belongs to Malawi,” Patrick Kalambe the Principal Secretary in Malawi’ Ministry 0f Foreign Affairs said I a recent statement. He said the saw no reason to stop the oil exploration project,”

A week ago Minister Membe said “exploration activities I the northeast part of the lake should be shelved to pave the way for dialogue to resolve the crisis.”

Malawi’s oil exploration affects villages in Kyela district that depend on fishing and farming along the eastern shore.

Lake Nyasa is the home to a variety or ornament fish, which are exported to Europe.

KENYA: PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS MUST RESTRAIN AND DISCOURAGE THEIR SUPPORTING MANAGERS WHO THRIVE ON MAKING HATE SPEECHES AT THEIR PUBLIC RALLIES.

Commentary By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission must move with speed and ensure that all presidential aspirants ensure they restraint their backup supporter from making public utterances which amounted to hate speeches.

Such stringent measures should include restraining their supporters from composing and singing songs whose contents are full of derogatory and disparaging lyrics targeting their rivals in the presidential race.

By doing so, the NCIC would save this our beloved nation of Kenya from going to the dogs and plunging Kenyans into mayhem and bloodbath similar t the one witnessed in 2007.

In this context, I have in mind what has late has became the tradition campaign style of one of the MPs from Western Province who has always been in the campaign entourage of the DPM Musalia Mudavadi who has been conducting the campaign songs, which in my view are full of hate speech.

The Ikolomani MP Dr Bony Khalwale who has of late seized every opportunity whenever he opened his big mouth in singing filthy songs hastily composed specifically for the purpose of derogatorily despising and slanderous towards the Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

I am sure for certain like anyone else in this country that Khalwale’s disparaging songs contributes no added value in Mudavadi’s popularity, but are capable of sparking off communal hatred between the overzealous Luo supporters of Raila Odinga and their Luhyia neighbors.

Hon Mudavadi, the moderate politician who I have a lot of respect for appear to be enjoying these disparaging songs during his meetings and take no action in cautioning his fiend Khalwale and refrain him from carrying out the songs bad mouthing Raila Odinga during his public and campaign rallies, though the lyrics and always song in full views of TV viewers among them Raila Odinga’ supporters.

It is time the NCIC intervene or take the necessary y instituting legal action similar to those it is contemplating filing I court against the Environmental Minister Ali Chirau Makwere. NCIC legal actions must not be selective against certain individuals, but must be aimed at protecting every aspirant from erratic politicians from king obvious mistakes and carried by emotions during the pubic address.

Dr Khalwale is a highly qualified medical doctor and since when did he change his profession from medical practitioner a pop-singer? He is just a mischievous person nursing high degree of hate against Raila Odinga. The doctor had gained a lot of respect among Kenyans ever since his major contributions to the Grand Regent Hotel financial scandal. But of late his political prowess is slowly and gradually drifting towards the category of the likes of cheap treasury. hunters like Tony Gachoka.

Musalia Mudavadi has started his presidential campaign well, but signs of blunder immediately emerged when he allowed himself to be surrounded by masters political manipulators like Mark Too {the so-called Bwana Dawa} a man who has never won even a civic seat in his native Nandi North district who have perfected I the art of political manipulations and deceits.

Kenya are watching carefully toe politician who thrives on hate speeches in order to achieve their goal. I have also respect to other presidential aspirant like Ms Martha Karua. Peer Kenneth, Raila Odinga and prof Kiyapi who only articulating their places and dwelt mostly on issue based campaign ,steering clear of utterances aimed a discredit their opponents. May God bless them.

KENYANS MUST STOP SHOWING HOSTILITIES TO THE MOI FAMILY AND SHOULD EMULATE HOW AFTER HIS RETIREMENT THE TANZANIANS TREATED THE LATE JULIUS KAMBARAGE NYERERE

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City.

It is time for the Kenyans people of goodwill to emulate what their neighbors in Tanzania did interacting with the late President Julius Kambarage Nyerere after his retirement from the office and active politics.

Kenyans should a certain degree of respect to the former President Daniel Arap Moi and members of his immediate family in the same way and manner the Tanzanians had treated their retired head of state.

Nyerere voluntarily relinquished his presidency after serving for close to 26 years. Dr. Nyerere did not have a decent house in his rural Butiama village near Musoma, though he had an established homestead with a small house whose rooftop was covered with old corrugated iron sheets.

In showing their love and good gesture as the sign appreciation to what Mwalimu Nyererere did for the country and its people, members of the Tanzanaia’s People’s Defense force {TPDF} quickly made a move. They raised substantial money among members of the combined armed forces and built a palatial home that befits a retired head of state at Nyerere’s rural home in Butiama village.

The house is an ultra modern or should be said in the Kenyan common standard terms as a palatial home, whose roofs is covered with red tiles with a wonderful finishing, which is close to the state of art construction work.

It was built on a Harambee self-help spirit in which Tanzanians from all walks of life contributed money generously and voluntarily on their own volition.

Mzee Moi served Kenyans diligently for 24 uninterrupted years, though as industrious as he is, he had established his own home at Kabarak farm near Nakuru where he kept his family. As it is normal in the case fall the African rulers, Moi might have brushed his shoulders the wrong way with many Kenyans on various crucial issues, but this should not be used as instrumental tools of causing him and his entire family the high degree of harassment an embarrassment the way I am seeing things.

During his long lasting stewardship of this country Mzee did a lot to the common man. He built many important institutions of higher learning including public universities, he lifted the standards of living among the Kenyan communities which were previously marginalized from the days of colonial era, and should go down in history like someone who did a lot to Kenyans.

What I am seeing now is intriguing activities of some people who have ganged themselves as the agents of hate against Moi and his entire family members. Other are conspiring on daily basis on how to grab whatever the family owns on flimsy claim.

Other conspirators are known to be pursuing the Moi family through legal channels by instituting numerous legal actions based on falsified claims, with aims and objectives of grabbing the family hard earned properties., while other are known to be in the process of hatching conspiracies to deprive the Moi family of their genuinely acquired property through petty jealousies and enviousness.

It is even wore and shame that even Moi’s married daughter who are grown up and now members of other families outside the home of the retired head of state are not spared. They are being accused ungodly manners in conspiracies to have their property grabbed.

I am quite sure for certain that many Kenyans are Christian who believes in the doctrine of Christianity teachings and not “paganism” which forbade grabbing of a neighbor’s property using unorthodox tricks

Moi supported hundreds of thousands of orphans during his tenure of State House, helped hundreds of Kenyans from poor families acquire high education, but many modern roads leading to almost every corner of the Republic of Kenya, modernized he communications system.

The high degree of hate against Moi could be seen in an open following the recent dismissal of a Supreme Court Judge for simply reasons that he did not allow Moi who was then a serving head of state to be summoned his court to testify during the marathon inquiry ordered by the Government in early 2003 to probe the multibillion shillings Golden berg scandal.

By constantly harassing Mr Moi and his family, Kenyan are setting up a bad precedent making the presidency of this country becoming increasingly unattractive the assumption and fear that it is the kind of a job which carries a high risk of being targeted for frustrations and victimization thereafter retirement.

Mzee Moi had handed power to his successor voluntarily and peacefully after completing his constitutional ten year mandate in accordance to the Republican constitution of the day without any fuss as it is the common practice in many pats of this continent, that even he outgoing presidents who knew pretty well that they have been voted out cling to power by any of manipulating members of the armed force to perpetuate their dictatorial ruling and continuing doing so irrespective of the overwhelming public opinion against them This has been the sources of bloodbath in Africa. Moi therefore will go down the annals of history as the president who respected the verdict of the people and handed power peacefully to his successor.

In this context, it is my heartfelt ad passionate appeal to all level minded Kenyans to exercises some amount of respect towards Mzee Moi and his people minded Kenyan to exercise some serious amount of respect to the retired head of state that befits a man of his personal status

Those who feel they were wronged by the defunct Moi’s KANU regime should forgive the old man and follow the words coined by the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta that “We should forgive them but never to forget.” And they will find their conscience settled..

Kenya: Raila’s men are leading the campaign fr Migori Conty governance positions

Reports Leo Odera Omolo In Awendo Town, Migori County.

TWO men who are believed to be the most trusted confidants and close political associates of the Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga appeared to have taken an early led in the battle for the two prime positions in the Migori County governance thereby sending the other aspirants eyeing the same positions into great panicking.

The two are Prof. Edward Oyugi Akong’o who appeared to have already emerged as the leading contender for the lucrative position of the Migori County governor.

The other Raila’s political associate of long standing is the former Mathare MP Gilbert Ochieng’ Mbeo who is contesting the covenant position of Migori Senate seat.

Before winning the Mathare parliamentary seat during the 1992 first multiparty elections, Ochieng’Mbeo was among the so-called Young Turks who joined hands with the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga the doyen of the opposition in Kenya and fought gallantly for the introduction of the multiparty system of politics in Kenya as opposed to hitherto most dreaded one party monolithic system.

Prof Akong’o Oyugi who hails from Suna Migori was detained along side with the late George Moseti Anyona the former Kitutu Masaba MP and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Raila Odinga and others after a long period of torture at the now infamous and defunct Nyayo Torture Chambers under the hawk eye of the then dreaded Special Branch security intelligence under the retired President Daniel Arap Moi and he lost his teaching job at the University of Nairobi upon his release from detention camp, forcing him to fled the country in search of green pasture in Europe as he could longer be employed by any public University in Kenya.

The crime committed by the trio was alleged attempt to launch an opposition party in Kenya during the clamor for the multi-party political system which was sweeping the country lie Tsunami at the time.

In the 1992 first election held under the multiparty system, Ochieng’ Mbeo comfortably won the Mathare parliamentary seat of a Ford Kenya ticket. He was later nominated by the LDP then led by Raila Odinga to represent Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly in Arusha where he was returned twice before serving in the ODM electoral system for a couple of years.

Armed with an American degree Ohieng’ Mbeo is considered the most experienced and suitable person to represent Migori County in the Senate due to his vast experience and wealth of experience in parliamentary system.

Mbeo is to square it with the one time two times MP for the old larger Homa-Bay constituency Phares Oluoch Kanindo, a man who is well known for party hoping or party hoper who contested the Rongo parliamentary seat on PNU ticket in 2007 and who is considered by the electorate as a spent force and politically non-entity.

He had twice served as the chairman of the board of the directors for the Awendo-based SonySugar Company which he left in huff after failing to turn the government-owned sugar mill around into a vibrant profit-making outfit.

After sitting in the August House for close to ten year Kanindo is on record for not having made his maiden speech s or asking questions. The majority of the electorate in Migori say his time is up and as such he should vacate the political field for more the youthful and properly educated lots.

Kanindo of late has been making the round while appearing in almost every funeral gathering making sugar-coated speeches in Dho-Luo vernacular dialect for which he is so fluent in, but which the locals consider as ‘big joke” and ineffective and stale as for as modern politics in Kenya f today are concerned.

Ochieng’Mbeo is therefore stand a better chance of clinching Migori Senate seat in the absent of any other credible challenger. The ODM party loyalty will also count a great deal This is because the ODM will not take the risk of issue anyone whose loyalty and total commitment to the party presidential victory with a ticket to contest any elective position on its behalf. He paty’s vetting and screening would be the toughest this time around.

The Migori County in a complex that the region is shared by two ethnic tribal group, namely the luos the majority and the Kurias who are the minority. However, the Kuria and Luos have worked together from the time immemorial since 1962 when the former South Nyanza district was split into two one for theKiii and the Southern Nyanza fr the Luos. The Luos went home Bayalog with their neighbors the Kuriapeople.

The two communities have lived and worked together harmoniously. During the formation of the larger County Council of the greater Southern Nyanza, the late Mzee Paul Mboya Akoko became the first County Clerk. Mboya was a Luo from Karachuonyo while his deputy was Chacha Marama from Kuria and when Mboya finally bowed out ad retired Chacha Marama took over the County Clerk position and served for long time. The two communities plans to share the County positions of the County governance in equal terms and in a democratic manner.

In the case of governor Prof Akong’o Oyugi who is serving as political adviser to the Prime minster on matters of politics is expected to battle it with several other aspirants who have already declared their interest in the seat.

Kenya: Minister Kajwang in great panic as the campaign for senate seat heats up in Homa-Bay

Writes Leo Odera Omolo.

DEGGARS seemed to have already been drawn up for the election battle in the race for Homa-Bay County Senate seat.

The contest for this important County governance seat appeared to be heading for a two men horse race between the Immigration and Registration of Persons Minister Gerald Otieno Kajwang’ and the populist Nairobi based youthful and populist businessman Hilary Ochieng’ Alila..

A number of the would be aspirants for the same seat appeared to have backed out of the race, leaving the field open for the two Kajwang’ and Alila to battle out.

Kajwang’ is the outgoing Mbita MP and a seasoned politician who has represented the Mbita people for the past three consecutive terms ever since 1997. The Minister, however, is leaving the Sua region without the blessing and confident of the voters in the region following his recent patch up with the Suba community over the change of the name o two parliamentary constituencies, namely Gwassi and Mbita, which had been changed by the IEBC to Suba South and Suba North.

The hurdles facing Kajwang’ is his reported concerted effort to rubbish the existence of the Suba community, failure to recognize the existence community and failure to come into terms with political realities that the existence the Suba community is not negotiable and a reality.

The Minister who is known to be one of Raila Odinga’s confidants, and infamous or his Bado Kuna Mapambano lyrics political song, is being accused for having made no significant contributions in terms of development of Mbit constituency and Likened by the constituents like “someone who is flying out of political realities in the region” and seeking a soft landing spot in the Homa-Bay Senate seat.

Kjawang’ had previously underrated his worthy challenger Hilary Hilary Alila and apparently concentrated his energies fighting the late Joshua Orwa Ojode, the former Ndhiwa MP who before he met his sudden and accidental death on June 10, 2012 in a helicopter crash had indicated that he too would contest the same Homa-Bay

This paved the way for a tactful and mobilizer per excellence Hilary Alila who is a very resourceful young politician to concentrate in building his power bases in all the eight parliamentary constituencies stretching from Kabondo-Kasipul, Kasipul, Karachuonyo, Rangwe, Homa-Bay Town, Ndhiwa, Gwassi and Mbita.

Meanwhile report reaching this writer from Ndhiwa constituency says the constituents there have faulted Tom Otieno Alila the elder brother of Hilary Alila who made the announcement at the weekend that he too would be contesting the impending Ndhiwa by-election .

The rumor making he round in Ndhiwa Town and it environs, is that Tom Alila’s candidature is a deploy tactics of Minister Otieno Kajwang’ which are meant and aimed at weakening the most effective campaign being mounted by the latter’s younger brother Hilary Alila against him in the race for Homa-Bay County where the two are battling it out for the County Senate seat.

Ndhiwa electorate wants Tom Alila to withdraw his candidature in the Ndhiwa by-election to allow Hilary Alila to put p a strong challenge against Kajwang’ in the battle for Senate seat. “Moreover Tom Alila is not an ODM member and as such his chance of clinching Ndhiwa seat are too remote”, they said, adding unless he is being used as spoiler he should pull out immediately. His younger brother has invested a lot in the Senate campaign.

In the same context, Ndhiwa constituents also wants Sam Ojode to pull out of the by-election race so that Orwa Ojode’s widow Mary Ojode could carry out the family flag and recapture the vacant seat. to continue implementing the soicio-economic projects were initiated by her late husband ,but left unfinished.

Both Sam Ojode and Tom Alila were not available for their immediate comments on the latest development. Phone call placed to their mobile phone numbers went unanswered.

Kenya: Party hoppers and political turn-coats are not welcome to participate in the impending by-election in Ndhiwa constituency

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Homa-Bay Town.

PARTY hoppers, political-turn-coats and those known as common political gamblers this time round will not be welcome by the Orange Democratic Movement {ODM} to take part and contest the election in Ndhiwa constituency during the impending by-election.

ODM leaders in Ndhiwa and in the larger Homa-Bay County have resolved that that those aspirants who have been identified as party hoppers will not be welcome to contest the election in Ndhiwa by-election.

The Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission {IEBC} has called for the by election to be held on September 13.

The by-election is for the vacant Ndhiwa parliamentary seat. The seat fell vacant following the accidental death of the former MP for the area he late Joshua Orwa Ojode who perished in an helicopter crush at the Ngong Forest near Nairobi on June 10, 2012.

Ojode who was an Assistant minister for Internal Security lost his life together with his boss, the former Security Minister Prof.George Saitoti and their two police security bodyguard and two pilots.

However, there has been unusual influx in the number of the potential aspirants rearing to go for the seat. Some of them could be arguably classified as green-horns, while there are quite a number of experienced politicians who have contested the elections in the area before.

ODM party leaders and members in Ndhiwa are, however, seemed to be much concerned with the about three potential aspirants, who had stood and contested for the party’s tickets in the same constituency during the general elections of 2007.

The three have been identified as Mrs Monica Amolo, Augustine Neto Oyugi and the one time MP forNdhiwa Tom Okello Obondo.

The three were beaten hands down by the late Joshua Orwa Ojode and after loosing in the preliminaries jumped onto the bandwagon of Charity Ngilu led Narc Kenya and were eventually bundled to humiliating defeat by Orwa Ojode during the election proper.

There were also other candidates who lost to Ojode during the preliminaries, but they stuck to ODM and never ditched the party and had stayed on and contributed immensely towards the late Ojode’s victory.

One of the aspirants Monica Amolo cause uproar when she claimed that she had been rigged out of her victory and went as far as petitioning the court against Ojode’s landslide victory, and yet she pulled only 12,000 compared to the winner Ojodes 48,000. She had also lost the election

Tom Obondo who had represented the area for only one and half year in between 1992 and 1994 1992 on a Ford-Kenya ticket, and immediately had crossed the floor of the August House and went back to KANU for some reasons best known to himself. This is what is paved the way for Joshua Orwa Ojode’s easy victory on LDP ticket during the by-election of 1994.

Obondo has since became one of the notorious party hoppers in the region crossing back and fro to KANU an even joined Nicholas Biwott’s Vision Party of Kenya. At one time Obondo had teamed up with Biwott in a vain effort to wrestle KANU from its then national chairman Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, but the effort flopped but the latter triumphantly retained his sit.

The here have since trooped back to the ODM, and readily announced heir intention to take part in the impending Ndhiwa by-election. Now the party leaders in the region have set tough conditions for in any elective positions on the party’s tickets in future.

On of the leading contenders in the Ndhiwa by-election Ted Odero, made bluntly clear that here is room for political prostitution in Ndhiwa. “Gamblers who simply call the press and made some announcement about their intention of contesting the election in the by-election for the simple purpose of attracting handouts from partly and politicians are not welcome in Ndhiwa, “Said Odero.

Another prominent politician in Ndhiwa Jeremiah OwIti has called the ODM head office to ensure that there were strictest rules in place that are governing the readmission of those who had left the party and joined other parties.

They must bet thoroughly screened and vetted before they are welcome back,” said Jeremiah Owiti another aspirant the impending Ndhiwa by-election.

Meanwhile reports reaching us from Ndhiwa say that the widow of the late former Assistant Minister Internal Security the Joshua Orwa Ojode, Mrs Mary Ojode is also contemplating the idea of herself plunging into the race in the by-election.

A multiple sources have report that May Ojode has already hit the ground despite not having unanimous blessing from her late husband’s Kwabwayi clan home. She is reported to have made an extensive campaign tour of various trading center and marketplaces like Aora-Chuodho, Ratang’a and Wachara where he met with her supporters.

Mrs Ojode, however, could not be reached for the verifications of these conflicting reports. Her mobile phone rang, but there has been no answer.

Other unconfirmed reports says that Mrs Ojode would later this week visit the Orange House, the administrative headquarters of the OD in a tough lady who can fight for the set even against her men competitors on her own and even win.

Kenya’s presidential aspirant who pick up Franis Atwoli of COTYU{K} could be assured of election victory next year

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo

The time is ripe for Kenyan politicians who are nursing presidential ambition to cast their political nets widely open while shopping around for suitable running mates to consider the possibility of including the COTU {K} Secretary-General in their teams.

Atwoli has the largest constituency in the labor movement; therefore his inclusion into the presidential race team as the running-mate could have a far-reaching and fruitful result to any party or presidential hopeful who chooses him as a running-mate.

Historically it should be remembered that the labor movement in Kenya had played a pivotal role in the struggle for independence and went as far as helping the Kenyan African National Union{KANU} into a sweeping victory in 1963 general elections that ushered in the political independence.

It could be remembered that its inception at the Kirigiti stadium in Kiambu town in June 1960, KANU immediately identified itself with the Kenyan workers. It was gradually built on the strength of the labor movement.

At the birth of KANU, the late Tom Mboya had won its coveted top office of the Secretary-General of newly established first black African colony-wide mass political movement ever since the colonial authorities banned the Kenya African Union [KAU} under the Sate of Emergency declared by the colonial governor in Kenya, Sir Evelyn Baring on October 20,1952.

The formation of KANU an that of its rival Kenya African Democratic Union {KADU} came as a hard bargain during the first round able constitutional conference in Kenya which was held a he famous Lancaster House in London between February and March 1960.

It happened that Mboya who had trounced Arthur Aggrey Ochwada with only one single vote for the position f the Secretary-General was at the time the most influential General Secretary of the defunct Kenya Federation of Labor {KFL}, which was the hen the umbrella of the labor movement I Kenya.

All the unions affiliated to KFL joined the fray. All the general secretaries of the unions affiliated to KFL mobilized the workers who in turn joined KANU en mass. Prior to the birth of KANU, the KFL had become the most effective voice of he workers in Kenya and also that of the African population frequently issuing statements on behalf of African population and is aspiration as well as the demand for political independence and the end of both the state of emergency and racial discrimination on jobs.

In its early existence as a mass political movement in Kenya , KANU survived mostly on resources and manpower provided by the KFL, which later propelled I-it into power in 1963.
It was also joined by splinters of African political parties which were given very limited chances to operate within the district level. This was so in the absence of any mass and colony-wide African political parties. Ii fact it as through the KFL unfaltering support that KANU successfully managed to over its rivals like the pro-white settlers KADU and other a the tie of the 1963 general election, which ushered in political independence.

And even today the labor movement could [provide the competing parties with a swing votes. This is the main reason why I have the opinion that any presidential aspirant whose party can settle on Atwoli as its running-mate could harvest maximum votes within the industries and from the plantation workers.

The outspoken unionist has built a large following not only among the workers, but the Kenya public at large. He is a robust- man who always prefer taking the bull by its horn and a fearless speaker when it come to the question of defending he Kenyan workers.

Atwoli always peaks his minds irrespective of how other takes hi views. He has built a strong constituency beyond parochial lines, tribal ethnic boundaries; therefore he could be an asset to the party that picks him up as a running mate to its presidential aspirant. Such a party would definitely harvest maximum votes from the workers and other Kenyans who have come to trust Atwoli as an untainted leader.

History is so kind and it tells us that the later Dr Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana won and be Secretary general of the Trade Union Congress o Ghana {TUC}, while in Kenya the late Jomo Kenyatta’s accession to power was made possible owing to the organizational skills and mobilization ability of the politically genius Tom Mboya. It was Mboya’s dynamism and used his political magnanimity and skills in propelling KANU into victory n 1963.

Atwoli apart from c being the boss of COTU {K} is also the Secretary-general of the membership –rich Union of the Kenya Plantation and Agricultural Workers. Also in his armpit is the Kenya Union of Sugar Plantation Workers.

Atwoli is known as a man who strongly abhorred the politics of sycophancy and as such would make a wonderful vice president of the Republic of Kenya. Ever since stepping into the helm of workers leadership, Atwoli has put the Kenyan workers into the world map. He is sitting o several key and important world-wide workers boards, important workers boards in the African continent.

Kenya: Ndhiwa parliamentary seats declared vacant as dozen would be aspirants scramble to contest the by election

DAGGERS ARE DRAWN FOR THE BATTLE OF NDHIWA BY-ELECTION AS MORE THAN A DOZEN OF ASPIRANTS DECLARED THEIR INTEREST AND INTENTION OF CONTESTING FOR THE VACANT SEAT.

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo in Homa-Bay Town.

IMMMEDITELY after the speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende issued the writs declaring three parliamentary seats vacant, paving way for the by-elections, a good number of leading political personalities in Ndhiwa declared their intention to contest for the seat.

One Kenyan daily put the number of aspirants interested in vying or he Ndhiwa seat to 32. Whereas a former MP o the area dismissed some of the would be aspirant a simple “Gamblers”.

Tom Okello Obondo had served the constituency as an MP for only one and half years between 1992 and 1994. Then he was handed decisive defeat by the late Joshua Orwa Ojode who consigned him into a political limbo. T.O. Obondo is suspected to have influenced the publication of falsified figure of the registered voters in the area which deliberately to favored his Kanyamwa clan to have the largest number of registered voter in the region..

Ndhiwa constituency is comprised of five major clans, namely,Jo-Kabuoch, Jo-Kanyamwa, Jo-Kwabwayi, Jo-Kanyidoto and Jo-Kanyikela and also several other smaller immigrant settlers like Jo-Kaguria, Jo-Koguta, Jo-Komenya, Jo-Kajulu and o-Kadhola.

The correct figures of the registered voter’s distributions as per each clan is as follows;Kabuoch 28,000, Kanyamwa 24,000, Kwabwayi 16,000,Kanyidoto 12,000 and Kanyikela 6,000. The smaller sub-clans usually voted along their host clans. In this respect those sojourning in Kabuoch always voted along with the Jo-Kabuoch group which is the dominant clan and arguably the majority with more registered voters as per 2007 statistics.. The Kabuoch in this case, however, host more immigrants’ settlers than any other major clans.

The late Orwa Ojode, who hailed from the third largest clan Kwabwayi had managed to subdued his opponent or close to three decades, namely in1994, 1997, 2002 and 2007.

In the past elections, Ojode had always managed to overcome his rivals because he had relied on votes from Kabuoch, where his mother comes from. AT he same time a candidate fro Kabuoch could not win the seat, because the community has always produced several candidates thereby scuttling its majority voting strength at the polls. could not win the seat because this community usually put up several aspirants theeby scuttling its majority and voting strength. But now in the absence of Ora Ojode, the son of their doughter, the electorate in Kabuoch have vowed t back and support only one aspirant of their own.

Information making the round in Ndhiwa and its environs indicate that the three names have emerged and spreading within the public domain as the most favored candidates who are likely to carry the day.

They included that of the Mwanza and Kisumu based Marine expert Ted Odero who hail from Kabuoch.

Odero is an ODM operative and a smooth pollitical operator. Highly respected for his eloquency and militancy, is the man to watch. He is also connected to the ODM leader the Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Another name which is featuring prominently in the area is that of the late Orwa Ojode’s cousin Louis Onyango Otieno, a top manager with the Microsoft Computer international. His father Matthew Otieno Ogingo who once served as a two terms Ndhiwa MP and is credited for having been Orwa Ojode’s political mentor. Louis Otieno hails from Ojode’s Kwbwayi clan.

The other political heavyweight in the area who is also eyeing for the seat is Jeremiah Owiti. Known to his peers as “Jero” Owiti who is working with an international NGO in Nairobi is said to be very much at home with the electorate back at home in Ndhiwa due to his massive financial contributions towards the various socio-economic projects.

Another possible contestant is Mrs Monica Amolo a perennial Ndhiwa parliamentary election loser who is always masquerading and bragging t be very close to the Odinga family. She was beaten hands down by Ojode in 2007, but later moved to court challenging the victory of Ojode the man who had garnered close to 48,000 against her 12,000 votes. The case was thrown out b the High court.

Monica Amolo was last year during the much flawed ODM grass root election named the Homa-Bay County branch treasurer through consensus and not through the poplar votes. She hail from kanyikela clan and not posing any threat to the three leading contenders for the by-election.

Obondo was elected to represent Ndhiwa of Ford Kenya ticket during the first multi-party election in 1992, but soon after winning the seat, he served only for one and half year between 1992 and 1994, but jumped over and crossed back to KANU. This is what paved the way for the late Orwa Ojode to clinch the easiest victory in 1994. Tom Okello Obondo, perhaps is arguably the most experienced politician in the region. But his popularity has waned a great deal . Obondo is a member of the Jo-Kanyamwa, the second largest clan in the constituency after the Jo-Kabuoch. However, he is betrayed by his wavering character of hoping from one political party to the other, something which has earned him the name of a “political turn-coat”.

Of late Obondo has been warming up to the ODM, but he is believed to be a member of the Nicholas Biwott’s National Vision party of Kenya.. He was in Biwott’s camp when the latter made a futile attempt to wrestle KANU national chairmanship from Uhuru Kenyatta four years ago.. The former Senior Resident magistrate Charles Oyoo Kanyangi is also said to be in the process of contesting in the by-election. He performed poorly in 2007. He hails from Kabuoch.

Also in is the business man Dennis Orero. He too lost in 2007 to the late Orwa Ojode.Obondo is seen as someone who has lost political direction and sent force

And from Kanyikela come Hannington Orata another perennial election loser in Ndhiwa. Some of those who have declared their interest in the seat are newcomers to Ndhiwa politics and will have to cope up with the fat emerging clannish politics.

At the same time the rumours making the round says that some of the would be aspirants in he Ndhiwa by-election are suspected to be armed with fake academic certificates. Others are said to be semi-iliterate individual characters who are expected not to pass through the Provincial Language Board that may be set up by the government to check on the candidates English and Kiswahili proficiency.

One or two of the aspirants gearing up to contest the impending Ndhiwa by-election are said not to have gone beyond Form One standard of education, though such persons are very active in ODM activities is the region.

The winner, however, will have a lot of difficulties trying to fit into the late Ojode’s shoe, judging from massive development that the region has realized ever since 1994. During Ojode’s tenure feeder and access roads criss-crossing the full length and width of the region were improved up to an all weather standards.

Nearly all secondary and primary schools received the power supplies under the government rural electrification programme. More dispensaries and heath centers were constructed, and Ojode had to ensure that there were adequate supplies of drugs to each of the medical facilities in the region.

The recent recarpetting the Rodi-Karungu new termac road via Mirogi, Ndhiwa, Ratang’a,Aora Chuodho, and Sori in Karungu-Bay is another milestone development.

This particular road apart fro linking the tourists to the nearby Ruma National Game Park in Lambwe Valley is also meant to have to improve communications between the fishermen, fish traders who can now easily access market outlet in the hinterland.

Political pundits in the region have predicted that the battle for the f supremacy will be between Ted Odero, Louis Otieno and Jeremiah Owiti with other aspirants acting like curtain-raisers.

Louis Otieno, who is currently visitng the US, has yet to publicly declared his interest in the seat. But elders from the two major sub-clans of Kwabwayi which are known as Kamdar and Kasirime have resolved to back Otieno in the hope that he could be the beneficiary of the thousands of Ojode’s sympathizers from other clans across the region.

UK & Kenya: THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT IS LIKELY TO PLACE ANOTHER HIGH PROFILE LEGAL SUIT FOR COMPENSATION AND REPARATION AGAINST ITS SHAMEFUL COLONIAL PAST ATROCITIES IT COMMITTED AGAINST KENYA’S TALAI {LAIBONS} COMMUNITY

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town

Apparently encouraged and sensitized by the relatively small progress being made as the result of legal suit filed by the Mau Mau veterans in High Court in London against the British government for the torture and atrocities against members of the Kikuyu community in Kenya during the Mau Mau uprising years in the 1950s, another Kenyan community which had suffered similar treatment is also in the process of filing another historical suit in the UK seeking compensation for its members who had suffered similar treatment.

Member of the Talai community, a sub-tribe of the larger Kalenjin ethnic groups who were banished and exiled from their ancestral land in Kericho, Nandi, Tugen and other place for close to forty years are also considering the option of suing the British government to compensate for the loss of their ancestral land, property and the, loss of their freedom.

Commonly known as Laibon is for the belief by many Kenyans that its members possess supernatural powers of soothsaying and prophecy, the Talai community, The Talai community who were before the year 1934 were living happily among the other Kalenjin sub-tribes like the Nandis, Tugen, and Kipsigis .

The Talai had occupied the most fertile in the Kericho Highlands region. The British had decided to give this area to the white settlers for tea plantations and construction of the green tea leaves processing factories.

The large tea plantations and factories which were introduced as cash crops in the region in early 1920s still stands there and owned by foreign British multinational foreign companies to-date.

The colonial authorities in Kenya, was becoming increasingly intolerant with the falsified accusations peddled by colonial chiefs and white missionaries alleging that the Talai were mobilizing their people to stage an armed rebellion in protest for the confiscation of land meant for tea plantations. Other accusers to the colonial authorities that the Talai were capable of bewitching families even government officials to death.

A discriminating ordinance was hurriedly tabled in the Whites and settlers dominated Colonial Legislative Council in Nairobi. The newly enacted law, which was immediately sanctioned by the Whitehall and colonial office in London.

It gave the colonial authorities in Kenya the power to remove the Talai community and forced them into internal exile. Talai members were hunted down like wild antelope, bundle together in makeshift camp in Sosiot and in other places while on transits camp while waiting to be walked for miles to their new homes.

They together with their herds animals were escorted by armed soldiers and policemen across the Nyanza Province and the remotest hills are of Gwassi now known as Suba South district. The place was infested by tse-tse flies and the colonial authorities expected the members of the Talai community to perish udder such squalid condition on top of the remote Gwassi Hillsh with no water for their animals and even for human consumption.

Close 2,600 families were involved in the inhuman exercises. The Talai members use to take their herds of cow for watering 15 kilometers away at Sori at Karungu-Bay on the shore of lake Victoria only twice a week. The group was placed under the administrative watchful of one generous retired Chief Kasuku Matunga with whom the group quickly cultivated close friends and family ties, making the life much easier for them to survive. Their leader Arap Koilagen was late relocated to another remotes part of the neighboring Mfangano Island, where he later succumbed to death exile in around 1956.

While In Mfangano those Talai members who were hard-core were placed under the supervision of the latex-Senior Chief Simeon Wasonga Kwach with those who were exiled there also cultivated another very warm friendship and relationship which has lasted for decades. Strict restrictions were paced on the Talai.

They were m allowed t ravel outside Gwassi or South Nyanza district without the express permission granted permission by the local chiefs, district officers {DOs], police District Commissioners. They were also barred from receiving visitors from their original Kalenjin home region, Only the boys and girls were, however, allowed to travel back home during mandatory circumcision periods .

The came the year 1962, when Kenyan people were clamoring for political independence, the then Legislative Member representing the Kipsigis community in the white settlers dominated Colonial Legislative Council Dr. Taaitta Araap Toweett moved a motion calling upon the government to revoke lift all the restrictions t had imposed on the exiled Talai community so that these people should come back home and resume normal life among their kins in their ancestral land in Kericho.

The motion which was seconded by the late Tom Mboya and supported by among other legislators Oginga Odinga, Masinde Muliro Ronald Gideon Ngala and Daniel T.Arap Moi. It was accepted by the colonial government unanimously supported by all the 14 African elected members of the Legco, moderate Europeans and White Settler, Asian members and the rest. There, was, however some loopholes in the motion itself. It din t spelt clearly how he close 7,000 families of the Talai community would be resettled, where to settled them and the availability of the lands were never mentioned. The Talai were verbally promised they would be resettled among their people with no specific mention about the land. This is because thee were no more land in the region for free in Kericho and in most parts of Kalenjin region had already been settled and exhausted.

The Talai were then abandoned in a small Kericho Municipality parcel of land where they have been living in a crowded manner ever since 1962

The majority of hose living in Kericho have yet to get the land which they can call their own and settled on despite of the repeated assurances by the successive independent governments of Kenya.

This week members of the Talai community converged for a cultural celebration gathering. They issued fresh demands for compensation from the British government.

The community spokesman Joseph Sigilai said the community suffered heavily in the hands of the colonialists and wanted compensation from Britain as soon as possible failure of which will institute legal action.

“There are hard facts that our people were tortured by the colonialists before us being pushed from our fertile ancestral land to create room for the Tea plantations and factories in that has benefited other people still languishing in abject poverty,” said Sigilai.

The sub-tribe spokesman said they were keenly watching how the Mau Mau fighter’s case was being dealt with before making the next move or instructing lawyers to commence legal action seeking compensation.

The youths participating in the cultural gathering wee n of the role their forefathers played, particularly the late Arap Koilagen in resisting the colonialists leading to his torture and eventually forced exile and displacement of his people from Kericho in 19

He said the community was also demanding land from the government as promised saying since they retreated to their ancestral home in Kericho County, the have been accommodated relatives some of whom have now run out of patience.

“We came back to Kericho in 1962 and we were accepted and accommodated by our distance relatives. Due to pressure of land, some of us are now being told to seek for land elsewhere rendering us squatters once again” ,said Sigilai.

He said the Kenya government has only managed to settle 515 families out of the total 5,574, and we are still being told by the authorities to be patient.”Surely we have run out of patience as the government seemed to be buying times as we suffer,”said Sigalai.

The celebrations were held at the Moi Garden ground in Kericho.

Kenya: Has the Kasipul-Kabondo MP became an internally displaced person {IDP}:

Writes Leo Odera Omolo

The Southern Nyanza district of Rachuonyo South is in the offing of making a history for having an elected member of parliament who has fallen under the rank of the internally displaced persons{IDPSH}

Honourable Joseph Oyugi Maguwnga is the incumbent MP for the densely populate Kasipul-Kabondo constituency is currently embroiled n total confusion as to whether to defend his sea in the old Kasipul Kabondo or shift his political base to the newly created Kabondo Kasipul constituency.

Credited for having been one of the MPs from Luo-Nyanza in the 10th parliament who has been politically very active, Magunwanga is technically and administratively displaced.

This followed the recent realignment of the new constituency boundaries. Kabondo-Kasipul is one of the several new parliamentary constituencies which were recently created by the IEBC.It is one of the 80 additional parliamentary seats, which now brings the total number of MPs in Kenya’s parliament to 290.

It has occurred that the new boundaries between the two neighboring constituencies has placed Hon. Maguwanga in a very awkward situation.

The MP is a resident of the old larger Kasipul where he has established his own home in a pace not very far from the nearby Oyugis Town. However, the new boundary has shifted and placed the homestead of the parents of the MP to be in the new Kabondo-Kasipul constituency administratively.

Three major administrative locations in an area previously known Eastern Kasipul have been include in the new constituency. The three locations included Kakelo, Kokwnyo and Kojwach.

Maguwanga who is a member of a small and minority immigrant sub-clan known as Wasweta. His parents had their family home in Kakelo, which is now part of Kabondo-Kasipul constituency.

Members of the Wasweta clan a sub-clan whose oriins could be taed back to the Suba of Suna Migori an Suba of the Suba region also settled among the Jo-Konyango in Kasipul while part of them have settled in Kakelo near Mikaye-Ober in Kakelo Location

The huge bulks of hi supporters have also been moved to the east and will now be voting in Kabondo-Kasipul. The boundary changes has put the MP in a very difficult situation forcing him to make a tough choice whether to defend his seat in the old Kasipul constituency or to shift his political base to the east and contest the coming general election in the newly created Kabondo-Kasipul constituency.

The MP is said to have lost the substantial number of voters supporter to the new electoral area, though he count on his uncles in Kojwach location where his mother hail from, it would be an up-hill task for Hon Maguwanga to make an impact and win the confidence of the electorate in the new constituency, because he is now being treated as stranger and an intruder and an outsider

On the other it would futile and disastrous for the Mp to stick to his old constituency now renamed Kasipul where he is residing without the bulks of his supporters who have been transferred to the new constituency of Kabondo-kasipul.

Reports reaching us, however, say Hon .Maguwanga has already made up his mind and that he would defend his seat in the newly created constituency.

The MP was among half a dozen of aspirants who turned up during the tearful sending off f Mr Dorah Oswago, the step-mother of Dr.Odhiambo-Olel of Kisumu who was buried at her home in Wang’chieng’ in eastern part of Kabondo a week ago. Other aspirants were Prof. Richard Otieno Muga the Vice Chancellor of the Great Lake University, Dr. M.T.Ayodo a senior lecturer at the Kabarak University, Herbert Ojwang’ a prominent Nairobi businessman an a former chairman of the board of director of the Awendo-based SonySugar Company a Mr Ogutu and others who have made it publicly clear that they would be vying for the new seat.

Local political pundits, however, were quick in pointing out that Maguwanga re-election in the new constituency of Kabondo-Kasipul will depend entirely on his track record of development activities and effective representation during his tenure in

Technically and administratively, Hon.Maguwanga fits into the description of the internally displaced persona displaced person{IDP} As to whether he would succeed in defending his seat and make it to the August Hose I still a matte of public conjecture. He will, however, will be forced to summons his strength and public relations prowess.

Kenya: Subversive and concocted malicious article on cotu leader Farncis Atwol has sparked sharp reaction by Kenyans in defence of the top unionist

Special Investigative Report by Leo Odera Omolo.

TOP UNION OFFICIALS IN Kenya have scathingly lashed out at a scribe who was recently involved in posting clandestine, concocted and subversive article to the websites ad social media sites which meant deliberately aimed at to tarnishing and discrediting the name of the hard working COTU {K} Secretary-General Francis Atwoli.

The anonymous author of the article which was posted to the African Press International {AIP} which is published in Oslo, Norway by a Kenyan journalist.

The author alleged that Mr Atwoli had taken street urchins and bogus journalists with him to Geneva during the annual convention meeting of the International Labor Organization purporting them to be genuine journalists fro Kenya, and his action had disappointed the authorities in Switzerland.

I further alleged that the bogus journalist were never sanction by the Kenya Union of Journalist {KUJ} the main umbrella of journalists in Kenya Our investigations has revealed that KUJ is an affiliate of COTU {K}.

The author of the maliciously damaging article had cowardly hidden his or her true identity while masquerading as the KUJ spokesman exposing his or her ill-motive towards Mr. Atwoli a highly respected unionist who has since taking over the mantle of COTU {K} has turned around the workers welfare.

Atwoli has contributed a lot the workers welfare making COTU {K} to be one of the most vibrant labor movements in Africa. This is who he is now wearing several hats in the labor movement not only I African continent, and beyond but also in the international labor movement. All the achievement and gains made in Kenya’s labor movement is as the result of Mr Atwoli’s untainted reputation, nearly all top unionist from all over Africa had travelled and conserved in Kisumu to witness the occasion during which Atwoli and his ea of lineup were returned to the9r offices unanimously and unanimously re-elected unopposed, signifying how the COTU [K} boss enjoyed the confidence of workers in Kenya and beyond.

In fact the annual gathering convened by COTU was a true Pan-Africanist Trade Union’s Convention in he true sense of the word, because all members of the Organization African
Judging from the crude language and poor English with which the article is written, its presentation and style is telling a lot about the academic background and professional ethics of the author.

One might be credibly tempted to suspect that the author is working in cohort of some disgruntled elements from within COTU hierarchy. If not so then he is a yellow scribe of the fifth column, who is envious about the few journalist whom ere lucky enough to have been picked by Atwoli and sponsored for the Geneva trip.

Alternatively this article could be attributed to be the work of one uncouth scribe within Kisumu who is well known for thriving on extortion. The semi-illiterate scribe his had to brush shoulder with the forces of law reinforcement for his lust for free money which has on occasions has landed him in courts for varied offences ranging from extortion, demanding money with menaces, attempted. The scribe’s excessive lust for fee money has put him in a very awkward position and at odd among his professional colleagues.

The suspect journalist is a frequent visitor to Kisumu Airport, especially during weekends where he always laying ambush to politicians returning home for the weekends. He is also the most regular at the departure lounge on Sundays sweet-talking to politicians, particularly moneyed MPs from Western Kenya trying to lay his hands on the residues left in their pockets after tiresome weekend activities in their respective rural constituencies.

Maybe Francis Atwoli the generous top trade has put in place some kind of economic embargo and no longer parting with handouts money, thus inviting the wrath of his former friend turned enemy. Who knows? However, leading players in labor movement in Kenya interviewed roundly condemned the author of this article describing him as some one ho has perfected in the arts of telling pack of lies.

It a case of misrepresentation, miscalculation and underestimation of the intelligence of the Kenya workers. It also calls for the thorough medical examination of the mental state of the author of this article. It could be the work of someone who is mentally deranged a needed treatment.

One politician who has seen the article described as the work of an insane writer who can simply wake up and imagine hoe to write silly and dirty thins bout M Atwoli a man who dedication to the cause of work and is clean record of selfishlessness serving in the labor movement in this country speaks for itself.

One union leader who request that his identity be hidden was bold enough by saying tat M Atwoli is held I the highest esteem by Kenyan workers in particular an the public in general and could even win the presidency of the Republic of Kenya if so wish or when he choose to stand and contest for the presidency, no body will stand on his way.

All the accusations and allegation contained therein in this articles are nothing, but the work f devilish and cocked minded.

Mr Atwoli is a happily married man with grownup children. The COTU boss has a well kept family and or anyone to portray him as someone who is sex-maniac and a playboy is out of bound.

What this article should be intended to achieve has flopped. Shown a copy of the article downloaded from a computer, one of the Kisumu based journalist who had travelled with Atwoli to Geneva last year jumped to he roof,

Jeff Otieno Aguko one of the scrbes who had traveled with Arwoli in Geneva with was full of praise of the COTU boss. He said to the Geneva was one of the most pleasant time he had ever enjoyed in his life time.He could no figure it out as to what prompted he author to write such rubbish o Mr Atwoli

“What this coward writer has written is full of phantom and fiction. The author appeared to be having fertile imagination and only deserves to be a fiction writer. He should direct his fertile imagination of fiction elsewhere, but leave Mr Atwoli alone.,” said Mr Aguko.

KENYA: NYANZA YOUTHS TOLD TO MOBILIZE THEMSELVES AND FORM LOBBYISTS GROUPS AND MOUNT AN ELABORATE CAMPAIGN TO PROPEL RAILA ODINGA WIN HIS PRESIDENTIAL BID.

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Rangwe,Homa-Bay.

Nyanza youths were told at the weekend to mobilize themselves into various lobbyists groups and mount an elaborate campaign to ensure that the ODM leader Raila Odinga score an outright election victory over his rivals during the impending general elections.

They were also urged to go out flat and reach their counterparts in the neighboring regions and districts with goodwill missions of persuading hem o support Rail Odinga’s presidential ambition.

Addressing thousands of mourners at Nyakwadha Primary School in Kawuor village East Gem Location,Rangwe constituency within Homa-Bay County , Hilary Ochieng’ Alila who is an aspirant for the Homa-Bay County Senate seat said that Rala Odinga’s leadership credential stands tall above those of his rivals in comparison, and he is the man Kenya nation is yawning to have as the next president.

Hilary Alila was speaking during the tearful burial of the late Francis Okwany Osumba, a Kenyan technician who died in Juba,South Sudan in a mysterious circumstances in which foul play was suspected.

The deceased was the son of a Rangwe prominent trader Mzee Elly Osumba Ombuor. He survived by his widow Mrs Rebecca Atieno Odera Okwany and four young sons all of them still in primary schools.

Prior to moving to South Sudan where he was working as a technician, the late Okwany had taught at the various institutions an employee of the TSC, first at the Kisumu-based Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology {RIAT} ,Rift Valley Polytechnics and Kitale Technical School

Alila told the mourners that Raila Odinga’s leadership credentials stands tall above those of his rivals I comparison. This is a clear evidence hat the country is yawning for this man to be the successor of President Mwai Kibaki.

Under an ODM government the unbecoming habits and practices of looting taxpayer’s money will be safely guarded against the looters and economic saboteurs and get-rich quickly racketeers and lootings of the national resources would be the things of the past. And so is corruption. This is because Raila Odinga is a true reformist. The war against abject poverty will be intensified to ensure that every Kenyan poor or rich had the right to enjoy the fruit of independence.

There will be the pragmatic policy of ensuring fair and equitable distribution of the national cake. There will be no selective groups earmarked for economic marginalization and even the currently marginalized communities would be brought on board. There will be no discrimination in the distribution of national resources. The war for the eradication of poverty will also be intensified

Alila cautioned the audience that s the election days are ticking closer, are likely to emerge cartel of prophets of doom, and political demagogues and hirelings hired by their invisible masters for the purpose of spreading dreadful and sugar coated lies against the Prime Minister by those politicians who have formed amorphous tribal alliances such as G7 not to win the presidential election but for the specific purpose of blocking Raila Odinga fro being elected the next president of the President of the Republic of Kenya.

He told the mourners, however, not to worry s the god isn’t with those rushing into forming tribal alliances to balkanize Kenyans”Because the God is no in heir favor.” An God willing he truth will prevail over the pack of their dreadful the lie and Raila Odinga will triumph

Alila urged those youths who have yet get their identity cards to rush and “take queue at the registration center and get their national identity card and use them in registering as voters during the forthcoming voters registration exercise. Use the voting cards as your best weapon for fighting to for the genuine reform and true democracy as 0ppoed to hypocrates and anti-reformist who are hell-bent to defend impunity and fight of their status quo”. It is a big shame that one family in Kenya is single handedly owning a large tracks of land which is twice bigger than Nyanza Province, while thousands of lands Kenyans are rotting and living under squalid conditions in IDP camps”.

Such leaders should surrender small fractions of their ill-gotten tracks of land to he government for re-distribution to the poor and landless Kenyans instead of running errand seeking for presidential votes.
