 NAIROBI, April 14

– At least 10 suspected Mungiki sect members were gunned down by police across Nairobi, Central and Rift Valley provinces after the illegal group launched a massive pre-dawn protest over the killing of the wife and driver of their founding Chairman.

There were two civilian casualties. One occurred in Thika where a man was shot dead by suspected sect members at 3 am. Central Provincial Police Boss Philip Ndwiga said six people believed to be sect members had been arrested in connection to the killing.

In Makadara a man was hacked to death overnight and his body recovered early Monday morning.

Police began by lobbing tear gas canister to disperse the machete-wielding mob. The riotous group did not budge and officers drew guns.

In Nairobi’s Kariobangi estate two suspects, part of a gang burning cars and setting up illegal roadblocks, were felled by officers.

The scene was replicated Down Town Nairobi where officers shot dead another man believed to be a member of the notorious gang. He was part of a group of youth heading for the Central Business District. They were intercepted on Kirinyaga road by officers.

Eldoret District Criminal Investigations Officer Munga Nyale reported two protestors killed.

Naivasha recorded one death. Another sect member, part of a group blocking the Nairobi-Nakuru road was killed. Officers tried to disperse the crowd, they responded by throwing stones.

Two suspects were killed in both Ruiru and Murang’a.

Transport was paralysed in Nairobi’s Zimmerman, Dagoretti, Kayole, Dandora, Komarock, Dagoretti and Shauri Moyo estates.

Thirty vehicles and a petrol station were set ablaze in Embakasi.

“We don’t know what is happening and surely the government should do something. That’s why we have the police and the intelligence unit,” a businessman in Embakasi said.

Nairobi Provincial Police Chief Njue Njagi said anti-riot officers had been deployed to the affected areas to quell the unrest.

“We are doing everything possible to stop the riots,” he said.

In Nakuru, two vehicles were set ablaze in Bahati by about 200 sect members who barricaded the Nakuru-Nyahururu road.

The rowdy youth also lit bonfires on some streets in the town before they were dispersed by anti riot police.

The sect members also blocked roads in Naivasha town bringing activities in there to a standstill.

The youth are protesting the killing of Maina Njenga’s wife Virginia and her driver last week. They allege the duo was executed by police.

Njenga is in jail serving a five-year term after he was convicted of being in possession of drugs and a firearm illegally.

About two months ago the sect members staged a daring demonstration in Nairobi CBD, the second of its kind, demanding the release of Njenga.

The question that the press must now ask; where is the CID? And why are we paying them a salary?

The other time the same sect members were in town, the police played chase game, just like they played it again today.

If such a big group can organize to paralyze transport in Kenya without the knowledge of the police, then we are on our own.

Dear Mr. Oketch,

Kibaki should set up a ministry for Mungiki Affairs and make Maina Njenga the minister.
