Kenya: Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA): Peace building training for practitioners: (28th June to 8th July 2010, Nairobi)

Greetings

Coalition for Peace in Africa (COPA) will for the period 28th June to 8th July 2010 conduct a 11 day peace building training in Nairobi for practitioners working in the fields of peace, development, relief and international organizations from the Great Lakes, East Africa and the Horn of Africa.

The training is ideal for practitioners who would like to build their capacities in different thematic areas relating to peace building and conflict transformation. It will best serve the needs of persons who have not had peace building trainings and those who have only undertaken basic levels.

Thematic areas to be covered have been designed with a focus on people whose organizations have programmes or are planning to have projects in conflict zones within the fore-mentioned areas.

In a nut shell, specific focus areas will be:

? Understanding conflict

· Understanding of concepts: (conflict, violence, peace ,development & their connectedness)

· Perceptions, attitudes and behaviours in relation to conflict

· Introduction to conflict analysis (case studies will be used to understand various conflicts in the regions). Out of the session, participants will be expected to develop strategies that will help their organizations effectively intervene in conflicts in their areas of operation

? Conflict Transformation

· Approaches to conflict management (Facilitating dialogue, mediation, negotiation and arbitration)

· Communication skills (the role of communication in peace building and in communities emerging from protracted conflicts)

· Conflict Early warning

· Trauma healing in post conflict societies (the relationship between trauma and cycles of violence, and on how to break out of the cycles)

? Building Sustainable peace

· Conflict sensitive approaches to development

· Networking, coalitions and alliances

· Advocacy, Lobbying and Campaigning

· Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting and Learning

Training charges are US$900. The amount will cover the 11 days tuition and resource materials such as the Working with Conflict Resource book and a DVD of the Wajir story. The DVD sites the case of Wajir in North Eastern Kenya and how a group of women from the area joined hands and using local resources and structures managed to transform perennial conflicts in the area.

Accommodation charges will be charged separately at US$80 per day for full board. Day scholars will be required to pay US$20 per day to cover the conference package.

The deadline for submitting applications is on Monday the 21st of June 2010.
