Dear Readers, I wanted you to be the first to hear the news. At the Democratic National Convention next month, we’re going to kick off the general election with an event that opens up the political process the same way we’ve opened it up throughout this campaign. Barack has made it clear that this is your convention, not his. On Thursday, August 28th, he’s scheduled to formally accept the Democratic nomination in a speech at the convention hall in front of the assembled delegates. Instead, Barack will leave the convention hall and join more than 75,000 people for a huge, free, open-air event where he will deliver his acceptance speech to the American people. It’s going to be an amazing event, and Barack would like you to join him. Free tickets will become available as the date approaches, but we’ve reserved a special place for a few of the people who brought us this far and who continue to drive this campaign. If you make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to fly to Denver and spend two days and nights at the convention, meet Barack backstage, and watch his acceptance speech in person. Each of the ten supporters who are selected will be able to bring one guest to join them. Make a donation now and you could have a front row seat to history: https://donate.barackobama.com/openconvention We’ll follow up with more details on this and other convention activities as we get closer, but please take a moment and pass this note to someone you know who might like to be there. It will be an event you’ll never forget. Thank you, David |

VIDEO: Unite for Change
Dear Readers, Last weekend, tens of thousands of people attended Unite for Change meetings in all 50 states. These meetings connected Obama supporters, Democrats who supported other candidates in the primary, Independents, and even some Republicans. They came together to talk about the change this country desperately needs and form the fundamental building blocks of change in their communities. Check out this video we put together from events all over the country and share it with your friends: Unite for Change was an incredible display of the strength of our grassroots movement and the power of Americans to unite around our common desire for change. No one of us can change this country alone. That’s why it’s so important to bring Democrats, Independents, and Republicans who are tired of the politics of the past together to plan how to organize their neighborhoods. Here are some stories we heard from people who participated in Unite for Change events this weekend:
Watch the video of Unite for Change events like these and see how exciting it can be to get involved in your community: http://my.barackobama.com/ufcvideo Working together, we can have a huge impact — not just on the election, but on the way politics works in America. Deadline: Midnight tonight; One more thing;
 |
Dear Readers,
Tonight is the crucial financial reporting deadline for June. Right now is the time to step up and own a piece of this campaign. I need your help to take on John McCain, the Republican National Committee, and the shady so-called 527 groups that are dedicated to attacking this campaign using millions of dollars in unregulated contributions. Please support this movement by making a donation of $25 by Midnight tonight: Together we are setting a new standard for how presidential campaigns will be organized and funded. For the first time in a generation, a presidential campaign is putting staff in every single state for the general election. Our staff and the Obama Organizing Fellows are getting to work right now to build on grassroots energy in all 50 states. And — unlike John McCain — we’re going to do it without contributions from Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs that have held too much power for far too long in this country. By putting our organizational and financial future in your hands, it’s clear who will be responsible for our success and who we will be accountable to in the White House: the people. But in order to match the resources of our opponents, we’re going to have to do more and get more people involved than ever before. Your donation of $25 right now will help make that happen: I’m counting on you to take the lead and build this campaign. The stakes couldn’t be higher, and every American who hopes for something better from their government is counting on us. Thank you, Donate: https://donate.barackobama.com/deadlinejune – – – – – – – – – – – – – – The crucial midnight deadline is just hours away. The results of our fundraising from this month will be used to gauge our strength against John McCain and the RNC. But there’s another reason why every dollar you give right now is so important — we’re building the first 50-state presidential campaign in a generation. By making your first contribution before the midnight deadline, you’ll be investing in the growth of this unprecedented movement at a time when the resources are needed the most. Please show your support by making a donation of $25 right now:  https://donate.barackobama.com/midnightdeadline6 It’s been less than four weeks since Barack became the presumptive Democratic nominee, and here’s what supporters like you have already made possible:    — Staff and offices in 21 states    — 134 campaign offices open across the country    — Nearly 1,000 field staff on the ground, supported by over And we are literally growing every day. Your contribution today is an investment in the organization and staff we’ll need to expand our operation in all 50 states. Every single staff member on the ground and every single new office we open will help us to register more new voters, bring more volunteers into our campaign, and build our grassroots movement all across this country to help Democrats win up and down the ballot in November. That’s why a dollar you give today to help us build our campaign will do more and have more of an impact than a dollar you give in October or November. Declaring our independence
Dear Readers, Since we announced our decision not to accept taxpayer funds for the general election, tens of thousands of people like you have come forward to declare their independence from a broken system. This decision frees us to build a movement of millions of people giving whatever they can afford to a campaign that is truly reforming the way our political process works. It also frees us to take our campaign for change to parts of the country where Democratic presidential candidates haven’t spent too much time in the past. Our first television ad of the general election season goes on the air today. Sure, we’re on the air in places like Ohio and Florida, the typical battleground states. But we’re also on the air in North Dakota, Montana, and Alaska — places that have emerged as competitive because of the unprecedented grassroots energy supporting our campaign. These ads are supporting a 50-state ground operation that is being built right now by staff, volunteers, and thousands of Obama Organizing Fellows. But we have our work cut out for us, and we need to grow this movement. Right now, you can declare your independence and help us run a campaign that is funded by the people and for the people. If you make your first donation today, a fellow supporter is standing by to match your gift and double your impact. You can even choose to exchange a note with them and share why you are supporting this campaign. Add your voice to our movement by making a matching donation now: https://donate.barackobama.com/match Choosing not to accept these taxpayer funds was not an easy decision. I remain committed to fundamental campaign finance reform, and as president I will work to fix this broken system. But we’re facing opponents who have become masters at gaming the broken system as it stands today — collecting money from Washington lobbyists, special interest PACs, and relying on so-called 527 groups that can take unlimited contributions to peddle lies and smears. We have chosen to do things differently. You can see for yourself what kind of people own our campaign — each of these folks have made a donation in the last 24 hours:
Join Sandra, Monica, Mauve, and Tim in declaring your independence. Make a matching donation today: https://donate.barackobama.com/match Our fellow Americans are counting on us, and the stakes couldn’t be higher — we can’t afford another term of George Bush’s disastrous policies. We have a responsibility to win this election and deliver for them. But with Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs declaring that they will spend hundreds of millions to tear us down, it’s up to us to stand up for the change we need. More than 50,000 people declared their independence since our announcement. Support our campaign for change and declare your independence today to help reach our new July 4th goal of 75,000 donors. https://donate.barackobama.com/match Thank you for everything, Barack |

RE: Video: Important announcement from Barack
Dear Readers, Barack announced an important decision for our campaign today. I want to add a little context to the video message you received earlier announcing that we will not participate in the public financing system for the general election. Even though we stood to receive more than $80 million in taxpayer funding for our campaign, the system has been so gamed and exploited by our opponents that it is effectively broken. John McCain, the Republican National Committee, and their allies in so-called 527 groups that raise and spend unlimited contributions are dedicated to manipulating this broken system to raise as much money as possible — and they’ve proven that they’re very good at it. A top McCain adviser told MSNBC earlier this month, “now that we’re in the general election, the RNC money counts, the DNC money counts. So the truth is today, John McCain has more cash on hand and more money than Barack Obama does.” In April alone, they raised nearly $45 million. That’s more than our campaign and the Democratic National Committee combined. And that doesn’t include the plans of 527 groups like the one called “Freedom’s Watch,” which has said it will spend as much as $250 million under Karl Rove’s direction to attack and defeat Barack Obama. To compete, Barack has put his faith in ordinary people giving only what they can afford. That’s been the strategy of this campaign from the beginning, and more than 1,500,000 supporters like you have gotten us this far. We have a historic opportunity to prove that a movement of ordinary people has the power to change the way political campaigns are funded. And we have a clear goal as we begin this new challenge: 50,000 people declaring their independence by making a donation before July 4th. You can help take on John McCain and the RNC by making your first donation today. A previous donor is standing by to match your gift and double your impact. You can even exchange a personal note with them about why you’ve chosen to support Barack. Declare your independence from our broken system. Make a matching donation today: https://donate.barackobama.com/match Opting out of public matching funds was an extremely difficult decision, and frankly we are at a disadvantage when it comes to raising money. Unlike John McCain, this campaign has never accepted donations from Washington lobbyists or special interest PACs. While McCain has built his fundraising strategy around high-dollar donors giving huge checks to the RNC, you are creating a new model for publicly financed campaigns. Thank you for your support and for taking on the masters of a broken system, David David Plouffe  —–Original message—– Dear Readers, Barack Obama recorded a video message with an important announcement that he wanted you to hear first: https://donate.barackobama.com/bignews We have made a crucial decision that will impact how we compete in the general election, and it’s important that you understand the decision, its implications, and the challenge ahead. Fight the smears against Barack Obama
Hey,
You may have heard some baseless rumors that Barack Obama won’t recite the Pledge of Allegiance or put his hand over his heart during he Pledge of Allegiance.
The truth is, Barack’s grandfather, a WWII veteran, taught him The Pledge of Allegiance and inspired his strong love of this country.
These attacks on Barack’s patriotism are completely false and designed to play into the worst kind of stereotypes.
Learn more about this and other anti-Obama smears and help push back with the truth:

Together we can make sure these negative and divisive attacks don’t affect this campaign.

On Mama Sarah Obama’s Upcoming Epic Journey To The US of A.
Dear Majestic People Of Kenya In USA,
Today, as I watched Hillary Clinton formally suspend her presidential bid and whole-heartily endorsed Sen. Barack Obama for US president, my 10th great grandfather Ragem also appeared to me with a humble request. He stated:
“It is probable that Sen. Barack Obama’s inauguration will occur on Jan 20th 2009. It is therefore inevitable that Mama Sarah Obama will have to travel to Washington DC to witness it. This she has already told you is her wish.( http://216.180.252.4/archives/index.php?mnu=details&id=1143987872&catid=4) Please do not make her take this momentous and historically significant journey alone. You must plan on allowing your mothers or grandmothers to accompany her. Yes, she will receive diplomatic passage and reception, but it will require also that you to plan and send her peers to enjoin her in witnessing (mondo gibende gitim neno). As Mama Sarah Obama is psychologically preparing for this journey, you too are commanded to use this opportunity to welcome your mothers or grandmothers, if you have not done it already, and allow the blessing endowed in the witnessing of the inauguration by our elders complete. The first of our kind were taken there against their will. Obama’s father and most of you all sought to go there but for opportunity. Yet only those born there like Barack can seek the office of the leader of the free world. This will be the one occasion I wish I could witness! If you are able to send your mothers or grandmothers, then us too, your ancestors will be represented.”
I thought I should relay this message early so we can begin the process of passport application, as we save for our mother’s and grandmother’s air tickets, or save in buying them now rather than later.
Get ready.

The nomination
Dear Readers,
Barack Obama has clinched the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
The total number of delegates needed to secure the nomination is 2,118. Right now, Barack has the support of at least 2,179 delegates, which gives him a lock on the nomination.
Thank you for being a part of this. Now is the time for you to take the next step and own a piece of this campaign. Watch the video of Barack’s victory speech and make your first donation of $25 today to support the next phase of this movement for change:
https://donate.barackobama.com/nomination
Barack Obama will be the Democratic nominee, but we’ve got huge challenges ahead as we build our organization for the general election.
John McCain has been running his general election campaign for months, and we have some catching up to do.
But one of the benefits of this historic primary season is that we had a chance to build our grassroots organization in all 50 states.
We have an unprecedented opportunity to mobilize volunteers everywhere and compete in places that Democrats have overlooked in the past.
Last night, Barack laid out the vision for where this campaign is headed — watch the speech and make a $25 donation to help us get there:

It’s our time
Dear Readers,
I’m about to take the stage in St. Paul and announce that we have won the Democratic nomination for President of the United States.
It’s been a long journey, and we should all pause to thank Hillary Clinton, who made history in this campaign. Our party and our country are better off because of her.
I want to make sure you understand what’s ahead of us. Earlier tonight, John McCain outlined a vision of America that’s very different from ours — a vision that continues the disastrous policies of George W. Bush.
But this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past and bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love.
It’s going to take hard work, but thanks to you and millions of other donors and volunteers, no one has ever been more prepared for such a challenge.
Thank you for everything you’ve done to get us here. Let’s keep making history.

Tobias Odhiambo —
You’ll like this.
This morning someone forwarded me an email sent by the arm of the Republican Party that raises money for their Senate candidates.
The subject of the message was “Democrats Win Landslide Victory,” and the writer, Republican former Senator Bill Frist, admits: “I have a real fear of waking up to this headline after the elections this fall.”
He goes on to explain fears among Washington power brokers about Barack Obama’s grassroots support and voter registration efforts.
He’s right to be worried — we’re bringing new people into the process, and Obama supporters are organizing in communities across the country like never before.
But it can’t happen without your support. Frist was raising money ahead of tonight’s financial reporting deadline — the same deadline we face.
This is the last opportunity to have your donation counted for May, and the last chance to have a meaningful impact on the final three primary contests.
Make your donation of $25 count right now:

Here’s a little bit more from Frist’s email:
From: Senator Bill Frist, M.D.

Subject: “Democrats Win Landslide Victory”
Dear Republican Supporter,
I have a real fear of waking up to this headline after the elections this fall. […]
In key states, news accounts indicate Democrats are outpacing Republicans registering voters. We also know Barack Obama’s campaign is utilizing the Internet to raise record amounts of money to support his campaign and Democrats nationally … all in the hope that new voters and record resources will produce a Democrat landslide victory this fall.
There’s so much at risk, and conservatives I talk with from all across the country are feeling the rumblings of “what could be.” […]
[…] I ask for your immediate help in supporting Republican candidates running for U.S. Senate by making a contribution of $10, $25, $50 or even $100 to the NRSC. […]
What’s amazing about this message referencing Barack Obama is that it’s not from the McCain campaign. It’s not even about the presidential race.
It’s about the forces of the status quo, who don’t want to change the way Washington works, worried about the prospect of ordinary people taking their rightful place in a political process that is too often dominated by lobbyists and special interests.
They’ve seen the writing on the wall, and they know that when Barack is the nominee, we’re going to continue building a movement for change to elect Barack Obama and bring about change from the bottom up at every level of office.
There are only a few hours left before tonight’s reporting deadline, so please give whatever you can now:

Can all those who can make a difference ensure that the job is done by Tuesday, and Sen Barrack Obama wins the Democratic Party Nominations.
This will give us the chance and momentum of facing off with Sen John McCain comfortably in the main race. And in that race, Americans must prove to the world that time has come for all the young people across the world to take their rightful place in world leadership.
The Obama wave in America should teach Kenyans that we can all come together and support an idea whose time has come. Time has come for young Kenyans to come together to take challenges of leadership from our fathers.
It is sad that in 45 years, we do not have anything to be proud of in remembrance of our heroes of Independence. Kenya is in massive debt, and very poor.
We have no roads.
We have no drugs in hospitals.
Our education system is in the dustbins.
We have no adequate water.
You cannot be sure that you will have power all through.
The cost of living is way beyond the common man.
We have a man-eat-man housing policy.
And poverty is driving us to also start food demonstrations. The cost of basic commodities is way beyond the reach of many.
Independence was only achieved by the ruling class. They made money, and a lot of it for themselves, while, they made Kenya very poor, very much in debt. A debt that even those children not yet born will have to bear the burden of.
Can all the young people focus on their oneness as Kenyans, and coalesce around one of our own so that we can take over leadership from these people who have failed Kenya?
Can we all see the wonders the young CEOs are doing with big companies? We can turn Kenya around.
I get hurt when I realize that some of our leaders do not know the meaning of National Healing and Reconciliation. Yet, this is what we need now more than anything else.
If we cannot reconcile and forgive each other, the next round of trouble will not be easy. It will see a very bloody confrontation among Kenyans. And our leaders are not seeing this.
The young generation must then step in and take charge. We must rally Kenyans to reject all the leaders who pretend that they know the law more than all of us, and yet at the same time, they refuse to address the root cause of our problems.
We must all demand that all the youths who were arrested as a consequence to the bangled elections are released unconditionally, so that we can fast track Peace, National Healing and Reconciliation.
We must all demand that the youths who were arrested while demonstrating about food prices are released unconditionally.
If it is the leaders who are standing on the way of Kenyans to achieving this, then, all Kenyans must come together and speak with one voice; we value our country.
We will have to choose between Kenya and these leaders. The Obama wave has caught up with us as well.

Bush and McCain
Dear Readers,
|
Behind closed doors this week, George W. Bush quietly hosted a fundraiser for John McCain that raised $3.5 million from about 500 Republican donors.
No cameras were allowed into the event, and the two were only captured on film together at the airport — even then for just 27 seconds as they got into a car to be whisked to the exclusive event.
A pattern is emerging. McCain is going to extraordinary lengths to conceal the fact that at the very foundation of his campaign — its policy positions and now the money driving it — is George W. Bush.
Our campaign has a different approach.
Over the past year, more than 1.5 million individual supporters have contributed to this campaign, giving an average of less than $100.
This Saturday is the financial reporting deadline for the month of May. It will be a test of whether millions of ordinary people giving whatever they can afford can go toe-to-toe with the Bush-McCain fundraising machine.
You can help defeat Bush and McCain by taking the next step and owning a piece of this campaign. And if you make your first donation today, a fellow supporter will match your gift and double your impact.
A previous donor has promised to give again if and only if someone like you makes a donation right now. You can even choose to exchange a message with them about why you are supporting Barack.

Deinna, a previous donor from Jamul, CA, gave a $50 donation that inspired someone new to contribute. She wrote:
“I am a registered Republican who has NEVER given a cent to any political campaign. This is my third donation to Senator Obama. I’m also a female 65 years old. We need a NEW Washington. One FOR the people. Hopefully, Barack will begin the change.”

McCain is running to continue George Bush’s failed policies for another term, and he’s relying on the Bush fundraising machine of Washington lobbyists and special interest PACs to drive his campaign.
This campaign has never accepted money from Washington lobbyists or PACs. But in order to compete with one that does, it’s going to take every one of us stepping up and owning a piece of this movement.

Dear Readers,
Only three contests remain in the Democratic primary.
Voters head to the polls in Puerto Rico on Sunday, followed by South Dakota and Montana on Tuesday.
After more than four dozen contests, Barack has won the most votes, the most delegates, and more than half the states. But we still need 48 delegates to secure the nomination.
We’re fighting in these critical states and making the preparations necessary to take on Senator McCain.
The financial demands on our immediate horizon are greater than at any point in the campaign so far. We face a critical reporting deadline on Saturday, and your support could make the difference before these last three contests.
Step up and own a piece of this campaign at this crucial moment. Make your first donation of $25 now:

The primaries will be over on Tuesday, June 3rd, but there’s another important deadline coming up even sooner.
This Saturday at midnight is the financial reporting deadline for the month of May.
Give our campaign a crucial boost before these final contests, and send a message that we are ready to move to the next phase and compete against Senator McCain in all 50 states.
Now is the time to show your support — make a donation now:

This has been a long journey, and it’s hard to believe that there are just three primaries to go.
Millions of supporters like you have joined this movement for change and organized in their local communities.
We’ve reached out to new voters and brought people who had given up on politics back into the process.
The last primary votes will be counted in just six days. Show your support today. Make a donation of $25:

You vs. George W. Bush
Dear Readers,
Right now you have a unique opportunity to go head-to-head with George W. Bush.
This week, John McCain and George Bush gathered behind closed doors, away from the cameras, to raise money for McCain’s campaign.
McCain used Bush to raise a reported $3.5 million from a group of about 500 Republican contributors.
That’s a lot of money that will undoubtedly be used to attack us and make the case to continue George Bush’s failed policies.
But I have an idea about how we can match it. And we don’t need George Bush.
Right now, someone who has already given once to the campaign is ready to give again — but only if you make your first donation right now.
If you take the next step and decide to own a piece of this campaign, that supporter will double your gift.
You’ll see the name and hometown of the person who matched your donation. And you can even choose to exchange a personal note about why you’ve decided to support a different kind of politics.
Double your impact — your donation of $25 will equal $50 for our cause.
Now is the perfect time to make your first donation:

As the presumptive nominee of his party, John McCain has had a three-month head start to build his campaign. In that time, he’s made his fundraising strategy clear.
In the words of one reporter, the gala fundraiser with Bush was “part of McCain’s delicate effort to find the balance between embracing an unpopular president and taking advantage of his huge continuing draw with well-heeled Republicans.”
We’ll see more of this dance in the weeks and months ahead, but we already know the steps.
As we prepare to take on John McCain, now is our first chance to show that a grassroots movement of people giving only what they can afford can go toe-to-toe with the Bush-McCain fundraising machine.
And with the last three contests of the Democratic primary coming up in the next five days, the resources we’re building right now are an urgent necessity.
Help build our movement by making a matching donation today:

John McCain can run from the cameras, but he can’t hide from the fact that he’s aiming to continue George Bush’s policies for a disastrous third term.
Let’s show that we’re ready to take him on.
Thank you,
Barack

Thanks to you, Barack Obama is within reach of the Democratic nomination.
We’ve learned a lot together over the past 16 months, but we’re preparing for a journey more demanding than any challenge we’ve faced.
Yet in this challenge we also have an opportunity to run the broadest, most effective grassroots presidential campaign in American history.
Thank you in advance for your participation in this important survey. You and people like you in communities across the country are the heart of this campaign.
Thank you,
Jon
