KENYA: UDF IS A TRUE REPLICA OF THE DEFUNCT kadu AND IS OUT TO CAUSE CHAOS AND POLITICAL MAYHEM

Commentary By Leo Odera Omolo

READING about who is who among the leading political personalities and UDF supporters who converged at the party’s delegates conference in Nairobi and endorsed the Hon. W Musalia Mudavadi as the party’s flag-bearers in the 2013 presidential race, I am not amused in saying that this purely a Neo-KADU.

Those who have lived in this country long enough like myself, especially during the colonial area and the pre-independence days politics of the late 1950s and early 1960s will agree with me in principles that the UDF is a replica of the defunct Kenya African Democratic Union {KADU].

The UDF has truly balkanized all the Kenya tribes and communities which had supported KADU and collaborated well with the white settlers in a conspiracy to cause the delays in the attainment of Kenya’s political independence, which eventually was ushered in by KANU in 1963.

In the forefront of KADU were the late Ronald Gideon Ngala a Griama from the Coast Province, Henry Masinde Muliro a Bukusu from Western Province, Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi a from Tugen sub-tribe of the larger Kalenjin ethnic groups and Taaitta Araap Towett, a diminutive Kipsigis politician from the South Rift.

The UDF is therefore a true replica of the defunct KADU because it has amalgamated of Kenya’s tribes and communities which had a very negative attitudes toward the politics of true nationalism and patriotism. These communities have gone down in the history of Kenya as those who had collaborated well with the die-hard white settlers and colonialists, which were vehemently opposed to the country’s liberation and the struggle for independence.

The communities which I mentioned above had ganged up with the white settlers who were heavily funding KADU with intention, aims and objectives of delaying the Kenya’s political independence under the pretext that they were representing the marginalized minority groups.

They were the blue-eyed boy of the white settlers and colonialists who had hatched a secret plan to make Kenya a dominion country under the British Empire like Southern Rhodesia, New Zealand,Canada,Australia, and the defunct Central African Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland then under the white settlers Prime Minister Sir Roy Welensky.

Kenya was then viewed as a Whiteman’s country and its fertile highlands christened The White-Highland. The collaborating KADU politicians dined and whined in high places and five star hotels in Nairobi with the white supremacists, led by the late Group Captain L.R. Briggs of the whites only United Kenya party, the late Sir Michael Blundell of the multiracial Kenya National Party, which was later late transformed into the New Kenya Party.

The conspiracy against nationalism began in earnest immediately after the British Colonial Office in London lifted the state of emergency and lifted the restriction on the formation of the countrywide Africans political movement. Hitherto Africans were only allowed to form district political associations. But immediately after the first round table constitutional conference, which was held in the Lancaster House in London from Fabruary 1960 to April the same year.

This saw the birth of the Kenya African National Union [KANU} AT Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu on June 30th 1960. Ngala, Moi, Muliro were conspicuously missing at the meeting that witnessed the formation of KANU in Kiambu. However, Taaita Arrap Towett was present, though he was roughed by KANU youths.

But within two weeks thereafter, the three Ngala Muliro, Moi and Towett with the help of the colonial administration and white settlers brought together the Maasai United Front then led by David Lemomo, The Towettled Kalenjin political Alliance led by Taaitta Toweett, Mombasa African Democratic Union [MADU] led by F.J.Khamisi, Coast African People Union [CAPU] led by one D.N.Korokoro and Msanifu Kombo and other Coastal politicians like Apollo Kilelu, S.Roggers Msechu

And that came the birth of KADU.Ngala Muliro and Moi declined the position offered them in KANU during the party’s inception at Kiambu. But readily accepted the positions allocated to them in KADU.

This is exactly how Mudavadi, Eugene Wamalwa, Gideon Moi,Nick Salat and others have been behaving since the clamor for the formation of political alliances

The only Rift Valley politicians who stood firm and remained steadfastly with other early nationalists were Danile Moss of the Mount Elgon District Congress and John Marie Seroney.

The late James Samuel Gichuru was made the first President of KANU on interim capacity while awaiting for the release of the late Jomo Kenyatta from the colonial detention and restriction camps in the northern

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was made the vice president of KANU while Tom Mboya was named the party’s secretary general. The trio had the backing of other true nationalists like Julius Gikonyo, Kiano,

Dr Mungai Njoroge,Josef Stanley Mathenge, Eric Edward Khasakhala, J.D.Otiende,Mohinga Chokwe, Eliud Ngala Mwendwa, Mister Mister Arap Korir, Christopher Kiprotich Arap Murei,William Mbolu Malu,George Nthenge F.J Mukeka and others.John Kebaso, Washington Ondicho, Lawrence George Sagini,James Nyamweya and others who stood firm and steadfast with KANU and flatly refused to be manipulated by the colonialists and white settlers.

The coming weeks will certainly rove the like of Wamalwa, Mudavadi, Khalwalewrong when Kenyans would be deciding as to which group is best suited tor the Amani Group, Jubilee or CORD. However, all the indications are that CORD would overcome the two other groups which are full of masters of political deceits. I am really sorry and sympathized with Musalia Muadavadi and wondered why should the son of my old friend the King of MululuMoses Sabstian Budamba Mudavadi should be prone to political conmen and miss the boat once again as he missed in 2002.

In this context, I am not ashamed to say that politics of tribal balkanization has no room in the modern day Kenya. Therefore the time for reflection will come soon and those who are there simply to protect their status quo and stood on the way of political reforms in this country will be taught a good lesson that they will live to regret for the rest of their lifetime.

I also beg to request the Hon Najib Balala the Mviuta Mp to correct a statement which he uttered during the TNA/URP alliance rally at the Tononoka ground in Mombasa recently touching on the horny issue of land redistribution at the coast and redress against the injustices committed against the coastal communities over their ancestral land.

Could Hon Balala be more specific and honest to tell us who owns the Taita Concessions Limited, the TaitaSisal Estate,at Mwatate which is measuring close to 36,000 hectares of land. How about rhe Ziwani Sisal Estate in the neighborhood near Mwakitau,

How about the ownership of \Jipe Sisal Estate, Taveta Sisal Estate and 0ther prime land at the coast. It is high time those defending impunity be told in a clear cut-sort of terms that Kenyans are tired of leaders whose families are associated with land grabbing.

Kenya: Migori ODM MPs may retain their seats due to varied reasons

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Migori Town.

The forthcoming general election could produce the shocking and surprise results for some of the parliamentary hopefuls in some of the electoral constituencies.

There Are clear indications on the ground that the four MPs who inckluded Dalmas Otieno [Rongo}{ John Pesa{Migori} Edick Omondi Anyanga {Nyatike} and Cyprian Ojwang’Omolo would be much comfortable in the defence for their seats due to varied reasons.

The Migori County has received two extra additional parliamentary seats, which were created by the IEBC and endorsed by an act of Parliament. The new electoral areas included Awendo which was curved out of the old Rongo and Migori West which was curved out of the old Migori constituency.

The two Migori constituencies will now share the voters in the vote rich Migori town in two halves.

The new parliamentary boundary alignment has placed the incumbent John Pesa virtually in Migori East.

Pesa will now face it off with the frmer Migori MP Charles Oyugi Owino {Jalikowa}, a Nairobi businessman Peter Jobando, One Ogutu and other. appeared to be comfortable in his effort to retain the seat. He has a very attractive track record of fair and equitable disbursement of the CDF and other government revolving fund meant for the development of Migori constituency and is expected to sail through with a lot of easiness.

In the neighboring URIRI Constituency, the incumbent MP is the colorless Cyprian Ojwang’ Omolo the man who never made his maiden speech in the 10th parliament, perhaps due to humble primary school academic background.

Ojwang’ Omolo, however, might escape the wrath of the voters and return to parliament due to lack of any credible and effective opponent at the constituency level.

He is facing no serious challengers among the from half dozen of aspirants vying for the seat.

His strongest challenger is Eng Kobado a former Principal, of the Railways Training School who hails from Kanyamkago Central and is considered as an indigent. Another rival who is posing threat to Cyprian Omolo is Dr.Ongwara, who reuns a medic training school in Kisumu. Dr Ongwara, however, is considered as an outsider. He is an immigrant from Karachuonyo, only recently settled in the area ,and lacked the clans’ backing in Uiriri. He is also being accused of associating himself with political goons. He is always in the company of drunken political hecklers.

Another aspirant vying for Uriri seat is a Nairobi based accountant by profession John Boby Awiti-Otange. But the candidate seemed to be much of urbanized character, though highly intelligent and enlightened, his candidature has yet to pick up and attract large following.

Another Mombasa based business tycoon Paul Odhiambo is also in the race, but he is being accused of feeding rowdy youths with Chang’aa. He too has yet to make any impact in the constituency. He has yet to make an impact and developed sufficient following, though he is relying on his d

All the indications are that Cyprian Ojwang’ Omolo could easily retain his seat due to lack of any credible and strong challenge.dominant Kawere sub-clan of the Jo-Kanyamkago group.

IN the neighboring Awendo constituency which is also new and was curved out of the old Rongo, six aspirants will battle it out. They included the former senior KRA official Jude Ayieko, Seth Okoth, Fred Kopiyo the former Principal og \gasmba High School, Eric Oyoo an executive with an NGO in Mombasa, John Walter Sirawa, the manager of Gillies Security Company, Dr Abwao, and Joseph Owuor, the current Personal Assistant to |Dalmas Otieno, the Minister for Public Service and others.

Awendo constituency politics are based on Sugar Cane and tobacco farming. The agriculturally rich area has the potential of becoming the hubs of food production in the region. However, farmers tend to lay great emphasize in cane farming for quick return of money

In Rongo it is yet to be made clear whether the incumbent Dalmas Otieno is gong to defend his seat or not, but there are a large number of aspirants vying for the same seat. They included Eng.Phillip Odero Makabong’o, Mr Abuor Ojwando and others.

Reports emerging from Nyatike constituency says the incumbednt Edick Omodi Anyanga, could easily retain his seat wing to his attractive track of development and lack of the resourceful opponent.

Museveni takes over from President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya who had been heading the regional economic bloc for the last one year.

Kibaki handed over the chairmanship to his Ugandan counter-part during the 14 extraordinary summits of the Heads of State of the East African Community which was held in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi last Friday. The meeting which was attended by the Presidents of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi took place at the Kenyatta International Conference {KICC}, Nairobi.

The change over is in accordance with the article 12 of the East African Community Treaty that stipulates that the tenure of the EAC chairperson of the summit be held for one year on rotation among the partner states.

President Kibaki took over the chairmanship from President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi in November last year.

Among the far-reaching issues tackled by the Heads of States of the EAC last weekend was the deliberation and acceptance of the South Sudan, which has been pushing hard to join the enlarged regional bloc.

The election of President Museveni was in accordance with the Article 12 of the EAC Treaty, that stipulates that the chairperson of the EAC be held for one year among the five partner states on rotation. President Kibaki took over from President Pierre Nkurunziza of Burindi in November last year.

Among the far-reaching decision arrived at the last weekend summit in Nairobi include the acceptance of the South Sudan membership of the East African Community. The application by the Juba regime went a notch high when the heads of state and governments of the East African Community approved verification for the Juba regime to join the fast growing regional economic bloc. There has been persistent by South Sudan to join the now enlarged regional economic bloc.

The last week’s approval of the South Sudan membership to the EAC, now bring the number of countries partner states to a total six. They included Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rawanda and Burundi.

The presidents in attendance were Kibaki {Kenya}Yoweri Museveni {Uganda},Jakaya Kikwete {Tanzania} Paul Kagame {Rwanda} and Pierre Nkrunziza of Burundi.

Earlier fears had persisted about South Sudan security and personal safety of the nationals of its immediate neighbors Kenyan Uganda following reports that several Kenyan businessmen and professionals operating in its capital of juba have died mysteriously in the hands if those suspected to be members of South Sudan poorly trained security personnel. The county is still said to have yet to organize its judiciary system and proper police authorities to ensure that justice is done to the families most of those Kenyans and Ugandan who have lost their lives while working and living in South Sudan.

The summit resolved that the East African Community Council of Ministers should start negotiations at the verification work.

The EAC summit also expressed its support or Burundi’s membership of the British Commonwealth and also supported Rwanda admission to the U Security Council.

The summit also supported regional efforts being undertaken under the International Conference of the Great Lakes Region under the chairmanship of President Museveni to ensure peace in the DRC Congo’s northern Kivu region.

President Museveni who chaired the Great Lakes Conference blamed ideological disorientation. support private sector, poor infrastructure and discovery of oil and gas and other minerals would ensure development in less than 50 years.

KENYA: SCORE CARDS OF LUO MPs WITHIN KISUMU COUNTY.

By Chak Rachar

The recent announcement in Muhoroni Constituency by luo de-facto leader and Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s wife Ida Odinga that all the current MPs should brace to fight it out with their opponents and the voters verdicts will be respected by the Premier has caught most luo MPs unaware as they had hoped to thrive on the back of Raila ‘s name to ride back to parliament easily.

A group led by Nyando MP Fred Outa who are seeing defeat straight in their eyes have been trying in vain to reach the Premier under the auspice of “Odm Mashinani” in vain as Raila is said to have left firm instructions with the men in charge of his diaries that he does not want to have any single meeting with the said luo MPs whom he has constantly lamented that they are a total let down to him.

The current crop of luo MPs within the entire luo Nyanza at large and within Kisumu County in particular will be forced to go an extra mile if they are to retain most of the seats given that aspirants salivating for their respective seats are really on their heels.

“Most of these MPs can not protect Raila from outside forces who embarrasses him time and again and what is the point of always following him in luoland in nearly all funerals plus flocking around him even when he is in his privacy instead of them going to campaign for him and solicit votes outside luoland?” wondered Nyakach Parliamentary aspirant and former legal officer of Nairobi City Council Joshua Aduma Owuor alias “Ajos Jakabwana”.

The MPs are accused of many things ranging from unfulfilled pre-election promises to misuse of CDF funds and using their positions and connection to push for persecution of their perceived opponents as alleged in the case of Muhoroni Constituency in which the current area MP is accused of having pushed for the sacking of one of his opponents who was giving him sleepless nights.

1-KISUMU CENTRAL CONSTITUENCY.

This is anew constituency which was curved out of the former Kisumu Town West and East Constituencies.

The frontrunner for the seat and one man who was poised to win the seat with ease was Kisumu businessman the late Shem Onyango Kwega who was shot dead by armed gangsters in broad day light in Kisumu last month.

In his absence, youthful Kisumu businessman Abdul Omar alias “Abdul Dubai” has gained considerable ground and he is poised to win the seat as political tides, waves and goodwill are on his side.

He is thriving on goodwill of youths and women within the constituency who feels that they are indebted to them.

Then there is former hotelier Bob Madanje who is trying to send his roots within the cosmopolitan town.

Also is said to be in the race is former MP Ken Nyagudi who can not be remembered for any good thing he ever did to the constituency.

Another aspirant who is making inroads in the constituency is Ken Obura whose campaign slogan has been that he has “been sent by Raila Odinga” which has not been received well by the area voters who sees it as insults on their part.

2-KISUMU WEST CONSTITUENCY

It is also a new constituency curved out of former Kisumu West and Kisumu Rural Constituencies.

Presently the outgoing Kisumu West MP and Harvard law graduate John Olga Olago Aluoch is leading contention for the seat as he says that since he is the one who brought the constituency then he should be the one to officially take it.

He enjoys the goodwill of nearly all cadres of voters within the constituency coupled with his massive CDF investment in the new constituency.

Seems he has his one leg on his seat but he will have to battle it out with one of the leading advocates within the county Advocate Francis Wasuna as well as Roads Construction Engineer Maurice Paul Okeyo.

Then there is Rose Buyu whom believes that Olago is in parliament courtesy of her as she believes that she was robbed of victory and has been lamenting that the ODM top leadership to leaver the two of them in the ring this time.

“My worry is that I might be rigged out of ODM nominations” she lamented recently during the burial of the late Kwega and warned the party Secretary General Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o who was present that this time round she will not take it nicely.

3-KISUMU EAST CONSTITUENCY.

The seat is currently held by Shakeel Shabbir Ahmed, he is accredited with massive development within the area and well utilization of his CDF.

His major achievement was the construction and completion of Omollo Goro Bridge which had cut of voters of the larger constituency from both sides.

He is likely to retrain the seat as his development record speaks for itself.

“Shabbir is above clan politics and he has taken the constituency where it should be, his priorities the constituency according to their needs and not where his loyalists are based” said across section of his voters who were interviewed.

His major challenger is the youthful John Adero Anditi, the youthful aspirant is giving Shabbir sleepless nights as he has transversed the larger Kajulu and Kolwa areas saying its ttime for the youthful leadership.

He is a businessman with real deep pockets and he has been helping financially to all those who turn to him for financial assistance and any other form of assistance.

“My vision is with a mission ,the time for youthful leadership has come and its now” he said in an earlier interview

But he will also have to fight it out with Councilor Robert Oruko Otuge whose guerilla like political campaigns is doing him more harm than good.

Then there is Engineer Job Ndege who has also made inroads within the constituency and is gaining popularity day by day,

Another aspirant is the Chief Executive Officer of Big Pictures Richard Ogendo who’s well oiled campaigns might slightly shake Shabbir as he seems to have deep pocket; he has transverse the constituency giving youths identity cards in readiness for his election, whether those will be converted into his vote’s remains to be seen.

Leading Kisumu Advocate David Otieno Njer is also said to be salivating for the seat but could not confirm nor deny if he will be contesting.

4-SEME CONSTITUENCY

It’s also a new constituency which was curved out of the larger Kisumu Rural Constituency which is presently defunct.

The outgoing MP is Medical Services Minister and ODM Secretary General Anyang’ Nyong’o who has opted to go for the Senatorial seat.

Nothing good can be said about his management of the CDF fund but its said to be dismal and worth not writing about.

Victor Nyagaya who is Nyong’os Personal Assistant is a leading contestant for the seat and is said to have a higher chance of being the first area MP.

“To be sincere,Nyagaya is leading the pack for those eyeing the seat and it will be amiracle if he faile to clinch the seat, we are doing the much we can so that he wins” says one of his leading strategists Cllr.Ogut Awalla saying Nyagaya can be trusted as he has a lot of experience in the area’s politics given that he has all along worked hand in hand with Nyong’o.

Another contestant for the seat is former Permanent Secretary James Nyikal, he is also on the ground campaigning likewise to Edward Omol who many say started early ad he seems to have lost steam.

“He started well but all of a sudden he has gone quiet which has left us wondering if truly he is still in the race” most of the area voters argues.

5-NYAKACH CONSTITUENCY.

The current MP is Pollins Ochieng’ Daima and he has made it clear that he is defending the seat,

He says that he is worth being re-elected given of what he has done in the constituency but his opponents think his useful as the area MP is long gone.

His fierce opponent who is presently giving him sleepless night is former Nairobi City Council Legal Officer Joshua Aduma Owuor “Ajos Jakabwana”who says his dumbness in parliament is doing more harm than good to the people of Nyakach in particular.

“I sacrificed my well paying job because the people of Nyakach asked me to represent them in parliament as they say I am the one who can give the constituency a turn around it presently needs most” Aduma added.

Then there is Erick Okeyo a security Consultant who also says that he is ripe to represent Nyakach people due to his youthful age.

The likes of Bob Ndolo and Adda Kodera seemed to have opted out of the race or vanished into thin air with many saying their pockets can not sustain the current political campaigns as they are said to be in deep financial crisis.

6-NYANDO CONSTITUENCY.

This is the constituency where the current MP Fred Outa ought to have known that he has lost the trust and confidence his constituents gave him.

He is one MP who has always been permanently out of order in parliament ever since he was elected in parliament.

His CDF record is really wanting and he is destined to jail should the area voters decides so.

His agitation for the construction of Prisons within the constituency arguing that the said facility will be used to house “begging youths” within his constituency whom if not given usually insults him.

The construction of the Prison facility has since been stopped by the Ministry concerned.

He has two fierce opponents led by former Lamu Cler Lumumba Ouya Thomas “Kalausi” and former East Africa Legislative Assembly MP Clarkson Otieno Karan “Ja Migingo”.

Ouya says he is totally against the Prisons facility construction sentiment shared by Karan.

The MP is accused of having exploited rice farmers and doing little for them while he was their MP.

“He has been all along insulting we voters as beggars and sluggard lunatics, does he think we are to forget his insults this soon?”Wondered some of his voters.

Both Karan and Ouya are financially able and can sustain their campaigns against Outa.

Many within the constituency say the duo should agree on one of them to face Outa proper.

7-MUHORONI CONSTITUENCY

The sugar cane growing area is presently being represented in parliament by the shrill voiced Education Assistant Minister Prof.Ayiecho Olweny,.

His key opponent presently is James Onyango Koyoo “Owadgi Ojukaa” whose deep pockets is giving Ayiecho sleepless nights.

He accuses Ayiecho of turning ther area CDF fund as “Committee Developing his Friends” and says he has totally let the Muhoroni people down.

“We thought as a Professor we will head someone with him but he has totally failed us and any inquiry you make in regard to CDF is met with abusive words from him, we must elect K’oyoo to teach him a lesson” across section of the area residents vowed.

Other aspirants are Agwenge Mbeche who brags of always Raila sleeping in his house anytime Raila was in the US.

There is also Engineer Ochieng’ Ayiemba as well as former military man Barack Opiyo.

The battle here will be between K‘oyoo and Ayiecho.

The deceased whose name was given as Omuoyo from Kanyilum sub-clan within Wawidhi B area of South East Kano is said to have bee involved in fracas with supporters of the area MP Fred Outa. The youths are said to have set themselves upon the deceased with crude weapons.

The area MP Fred Outa is among the leaders aid to have spent several hours recording statements with the police with the police following the incident.

In the neighboring Nyakach also within Kisumu County, scores of people sustained minor bodily injuries following the outbreak of fighting at the ODM Mashinani campaign rally held at Pap-Onditi Center in lower Nyakach.

The trouble was sparked off following the late arrival at the meeting venue by on of the aspirant for Nyakach parliamentary seat Aduma-Owuor a former senior legal 0fficer of the City Council of Nairobi.

This was accompanied by dozens of drunken youth. However, Aduma Owuor was ushered in and given a seat at the dais as one of the aspirants. But his youth were not lucky to be accorded similar treatment by the conveners of the rally. The youth tried to force their way into the venue thereby st8iring up the commotion as the made an attempt to disrupt the sitting arrangement which had been made earlier.

This what sparked off the commotion and protest by the ODM youth manning the meeting, and controlling the crowd. At this juncture the fighting broke out wit plastic chairs flying out in all direction. The combatants also used other missiles and objects sending the participants scampering or their dear lives. KENYA: THE KENYATTA-RUTO OF POLITICAL ALLIANCE IS HEADED FOR THE DOLDRUMS AHEAD OF THE SIGNING OF THE URP-TNA PACT FOLLOWING MOUNTING OPPOSITION, THE KALENJINS

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo in Kericho Town.

The much highlighted political alliance between the Deputy Prime Minster Uhuru Kenyatta’s TNA and the William Ruto led United Republican Party {URP} whose main agenda and objective is how to block the Prime Minister Raila Odinga from succeeding President Mwai Kibaki as the next president of the Republic of Kenya is doomed to fail.

Judging from the reactions of the people on the ground, this tribally-oriented plan is heading to nowhere. The pact is viewed as mischievous and lacked the political goodwill of the people it purport to represent. The proposed arrangement is viewed by the bulks of the Kalenjin community as a political sellout.

The proposed alliance lacked the blessing and political goodwill of the entire Kalenjin community and it is viewed in the context of selfish interest serving and fertile imagination of the Eldoret North MP William Ruto.

The common popular saying making the round in this rich tea growing region covering Kericho and Bomet Counties is that Ruto is just about to mortgage the Kalenjin community for his own power bargain and selfish serving interest without having any tangible agenda for the future well being of the community.

And in the North Rift in Ruto’s home turf a group numbering hundreds of unemployed youth have formed a lobby group calling itself “Achicha” loosely, meaning “we refuse” in simplest English translating to mean “Big No” told William Ruto that his political alliance with Kenyatta’s TNA party has no blessing and consent of the entire Kalenjin community.

In this context the ACHICHA group which staged anti TNA-URP demonstration in Eldoret town wants the pact re-negotiated afresh with the participation of the entire population, and not by a few individuals locking themselves inside posh hotels in Nairobi and then coming out with such unworkable aragroup blamed the Eldoret North MP for being lone ranger and for not consulting widely before entering into amorphous alliances, which could turn out to be disastrous to the future Kalenjin people in this country.

And while addressing well attended ODM Mashinani campaign in Bomet town at the weekend, The former legislator told Ruto that since Raila Odinga has made it clear that he intend to rule for one term only, it would then be much easier for Ruto to get elected the president in 2017.

The former legislator accused Ruto using the Kalenjin while in actual sense, he is only pursuing his own personal agenda by blackmailing the community. “The truth is that Ruto is not fighting for the community interest but his personal interests because he is not consistent with what he says in his uncoordinated public pronouncement ”One day he saying that he wanted to be Kenyatta’s running-mate, the next day he is saying he is on the presidential race to the finish.”

“Kalenjin community risk being locked out of the next government. It will be suicidal if we the Kalenjin did not change our political game as we will be out of the next government, and this will take the community another five yeas in the cold.” Kimeto.

The most common and popular feeling and beliefs in the South Rift part of the Rift Valley is that the formation of the mushrooming political alliances by the various tribal groups would cause a lot of problems to the peace loving and law-abiding Kenyans, therefore something must be done with the uttermost urgency to avert such farmhouse alliances.

A number of political personalities have also scathingly criticized the Home Affairs Assistant Minister Beatrice ones who on Wednesday ditched the ODM and run to William Ruto’s URP, saying those happily abandoning ODM will live to regret when they get to nowhere.

Kones’ action in decamping from the ODM did not please many people here in Kericho and people were seen discussing the matter in low tone inside coffee shops, restaurants.

Kones, whose original home is in Sigowet constituency in lower Belgut near Sondu Market, they said, had no good reason to ditch the ODM and her departure reasons were not very much convincing. ”May be some of the party hoppers are heavily indebted and wanted the easiest way out of sorting out matters with their creditors because of unlimited campaign resources said to be in abundance in the TNAA and URP.

Political pundits were quick in pointing out that Mrs Kones will not retain her Bomet seat no matter how much resources the IRP may put at her disposal.

In the by-election that followed the accidental death of her husband populist Kipsigis political kingpin Donald Kipkemoi Kipkalya Kones had won the seat against Nick Salatt of KANU due to the ODM euphoria. Kones is not very strong on the ground and such she is just running away under the pretext of ditching ODM and yet she knew it pretty well, that the chance of retaining the seat is very slim

Majority of many people in this region wanted to join the UDM a party, which is headed by the former deputy SGS Lt.Gen {rtd} John Arap Koech who hails from Ainamoi in Kericho County, but they blamed the party for failed to establish its grass root structure such as offices in key towns and urban centers in the region.

Kenya: Kipsigis people did not approve Ruto-Kenyatta alliance and still maintain that Raila is the right man for the presidency

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town.

SOME of the amorphous tribally driven political alliances being formed specifically with one simple agenda; that of how prevent the Prime Minister Raila Odinga from succeeding President Mwi Kibaki as the next President of the Republic are likely to be fizzled out even long before the next poll slated for March 4, 2013.

The residents of this rich tea growing region have become increasingly weary of the anti-Raila sentiments, and wee now demanding that the anti-Raila elements should be clear in their campaign agenda.”They should tell us what they intend to do for Kenyans instead of filling the air with anti-Raila empty political slogans and rhetoric’s,” remarked a prominent politician in Bureti district J.L Ng’eno.

A leading KANU politician in Kipsigis land William Kipkemoi Arap Kettienya has cautioned his community to aware and move cautiously about the numerous tribally oriented political alliances. ’These alliances, he said could be recipe to chaos and mayhem.”

The common belief of many people in this region is that some monetary interests has driven politicians are the one who have of late ditched the ODM and crossed to form amorphous alliances with wealthy politicians from other region.

Unfortunately those forming alliance don’t go back home and inform their people what such alliances entail to their communities. It is the question of serving selfish interest. And this is one of the reasons why they have decamped from the ODM in the recent past sought for green pasture in other parties, which are led by wealthy politicians from other regions.

Another prominent Kipsigis politician who has requested that his name should not be mentioned predicted that “As soon as the campaign resources, which are said to be n abundant supplies in the TNA-URP alliance dries up,’Our people will begin running back to the ODM, which I believe is the only.”

During my numerous interviews with the leading personalities and residents of this rich tea growing region of Kericho and Bomet Counties, I gathered some vital information which are clearly indicating that despite of the intensive heat of mid-slinging campaign against Raila Odinga mounted by some Kalenjn MPs aligned to the Eldoret North MP William Ruto, the Prime Minister is still the darling of the majority of the Kipsigis people.

The community is not comfortable with the political alliance an coalition TNA_URP, but the people here are willing t vote for Ruto if he is contesting the presidential seat alone on his own on URP party ticket.

The people of this region, which is part of the expansive Rift Valley Province, are not comfortable with Ruto-Kenyatta alliance as simple mischievous and political sell-out. They are viewing such an alliance as it seeks to sideline other Kenyan communities from the mainstream of national politics in the country and as such could be recipe to chaos and mayhem.

I also discovered that the normal quiet UDM party which is led by the retiree former Dept CGS Lt.Gen {rtd}.John Arap Koech, who is himself a highly respected Kipsigis personality is the second most preferable political movement after the ODM. What the UDM must do in order to build its credibility is put its grass root structures on the ground. It should conduct its grass rot election and set in motion its activities in the region.

Kenya: The government should impose stringent regulations on MPESA operators to work within official working hours and not late in the evening to put robbers and criminals on check

Commentary By Leo Odera Omolo.

It is arguably correct to say that the MPESA money transactions in this county has revolutionized and increased the quickest way of transacting businesses, especially in rural area, market places shopping and trading centers where there are no established commercial banks in operations.

The same could be said of urban centers, small town and even in big towns and cities. This business revolution, however, has brought the big risk along with. A day hardly passed smoothly without an incident of attacks involving robberies at these outlets where the ordinary Wananchi have been accessing money transacting their businesses with a lot of easiness.

These well coordinate attacks hatched by criminals elements have resulted in serious bodily injuries and loss of precious lives of the innocent Kenyans due to the current widespread insecurity being experienced all over the places..

It is therefore my contention that the licensing authorities tasked with the responsibility of regulating the MPESA operations in this country should introduce the stringent rule and regulation that would compel these, money outlet to operate within the normal working hours along with other commercial banks.

By this I meant, the should only be allowed to open for business at about 9 AM and close at 5.PM and not to extend working hours up to 8.M in the darkness. And strictly only those operating inside supermarkets shopping malls wand business hours.

However, it has been noted that in market places located in rural area, shopping and trading center MPESA outlet have become the easiest targets for people with heinous criminal intention, especially those who have been driven out of major town cities the hawk-eyed

Kenyan policemen.

Many suspicious characters have been sighted milling around and mingling with customers with members of the public outside MPESA outlets while making surveillance at the same time hatching secret plans for attacking the agents. And thereby depriving them f their daily earnings.

Even some of the criminal elements are known to have followed those who withdrew reasonable size of money at the outlets into their rural homes by the nightfall. The purpose of those night raids are obvious; To deprived the traders of their hard earned monies.

These night raids against MPESA agents and traders have resulted in the loss of lives. The loses could be avoided if the MPESA regulating authorities and the Safaricom and other phone service providing firms could work out a joint strategy and agreed on a working formula in which the time for business transactions at these money outlets could be regulated and strictly allowed to operate only within the official working hours, and not late in the evenings.

According to media reports from many parts of Kenya, the MPESA operators and agents are prone to attacks as they are targeted by the hardcore criminal elements using sophisticated weapons.. In Nyanza Province, Migori town is leading n the incidents of attacks at the MPESA outlets, perhaps this is due to the town’s proximity to the common borders between Kenya and Tanzania.

Othre towns ad small trading centers which are prone to such attacks include Awendo, Rongo, odi-Kopany, Homa-Bay, Oyugis, Siaya, Ugunja, Bondo, Yala, Ahero, Muhoroni, Ranen, Kendu-Bay, Sondu, Ahero..

Homa-Bay comes second after Migori in the increased crimes-wave, which has also seen many night watchmen deployed to guard the shops in the main street have reportedly been hacked t0 death by criminal gangs.

Similar incident have been reported from many towns in the Coast Province, Nyanza, Nakuru, and western Province. The statistics of the attacks are increasing by daily, and this is why there is urgent need to have the business hours of the MPESA operators.

These planned and well executed attack are putting nation’s economy into total ruin, and the time for such attacks to be put to an abrupt end..

PRESS RELEASE

African leaders, academics to debate economic transformation and empowerment at African Economic Conference 2012

The conference is the most comprehensive event held each year on Africa’s economy and development

KIGALI, Rwanda, October 25, 2012/ — Hundreds of leaders and scholars from Africa and around the world will gather in Kigali, Rwanda, from October 30 to November 2 to debate the continent’s prospects for sustainable and inclusive growth in the context of the international economic crisis.

Organized each year by the African Development Bank (AfDB) (http://www.afdb.org), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the 7th annual African Economic Conference (http://www.africaneconomicconference.org) will be held in Kigali under the theme “Inclusive and Sustainable Development in an Age of Economic Uncertainty.”

The conference is the most comprehensive event held each year on Africa’s economy and development, discussing macroeconomic prospects, as well as trade and finance and development policy in a global context.

Africa has grown strongly over the past decade. Having weathered the economic crisis, the continent’s average growth is expected to rebound to 4.8 percent in 2013.

The region now faces the challenge of translating that growth into effective poverty reduction and sustainable human development, through employment creation, the establishment of quality social services, and expanding opportunities for political and economic participation.

The conference will examine the possibility of pursuing these objectives in the face of a worsening international economic environment, volatile food and fuel markets, and falling levels of exports, remittances and official aid.

“African policy-makers are by and large continuing to realize their quest for growth and improved well-being in their countries,” said Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank. “However, in a difficult international environment, the question is how to meet the investment requirements to continue to forge ahead.”

Participants will examine the key drivers of growth in Africa. With a growing number of countries on the continent producing or exploring for oil, the conference will look at the possibility of using profits from extractive industries to spur economic diversification and investments in social capital and human development.

“Africa’s vast natural wealth can create opportunities to accelerate human development,” said Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme. “It can provide the basis for infrastructure development, economic diversification, new jobs and businesses, and the domestic resources to fund quality services and social protection.”

Trade with developed and emerging economies presents additional opportunities for growth and so does regional integration, which can unleash the full potential of Africa’s investment and business environment. To that end, the participants will look at how barriers can be removed and regulations improved to allow people to benefit from trade.

With the number of youth in Africa set to double by 2045, and 27 percent of them currently unemployed, the conference will also look at the potential behind Africa’s present and future workforce.

“Creating employment for young people isn’t just crucial for social cohesion and stability. It creates a virtuous cycle of productivity, innovation, economic growth and fulfillment,” said ECA Executive Secretary Carlos Lopes.

The African Economic Conference is organized as a series of open thematic debates, combined with sessions that review policy research from across the continent. The conference provides a will provide a uniquely open forum for political leaders, academics and emerging talents from the continent to discuss solutions to Africa’s most pressing development challenges.

Kenya: RAILA must change tactics and empower his trusted troop soldiers on the ground in order to regain foothold in the South Rift regions

FOR RAILA ODINGA TO REGAIN A STRONG FOOTHOLD IN THE SOUTH RIFT THE ODM MUST CHANGE ITS TACTICS AND STEWARDSHIP INCLUDING EMPOWERING RUTO’S KNOWN POLITICAL ENEMIES IN THE REGION.

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Bomet Town.

He recent series of quiet political maneuvers by the Prime Miniister Odinga such as making an overture by way of engaging the URP leader William Samoei Arap Rutoin late night behind the scene meetings could be arguably said to bear nothing significantly important like any added value to his precarious position and fast waning popularity in the South Rift and in some parts of the expansive Rift Valley Province.

Instead of such unworkable maneuvers and holding night dialogue meetings Rail Odinga should take a bold step and empower certain individual political personalities, particularly anti-Ruto elements within the vote rich Kipisigis regions covering Kericho and Bomet counties.

The ODM also must extend its wing and network into the neighboring Trans-Mara East and West districts where the Kalenjin population almost equals those of the indignant Maasais. The ODM candidate in Kiligoris constituency John Ng”eno who gave the incumbent MP Gideon Konchellah a run for his money in the 2007 general elections.

The supporters of the Eldoret North MP William Samoei Ruto in the South Rift region are viewing thee Raila Odinga’s maneuvers as portraying the picture of some one who is embroiled in a great panicking of loosing the impeding presidential election.

At the same time the few Kalenjin MPs who are still firmly in the ODM apart from the Tinderet MP Henry Kosgey and the Aldai Mp Dr Sally Kosgey they lacked the ammunition and power with which they could puncture a hole in the URP euphoria which is currently sweeping the Kalenjin region like the torrential rains.

The three ODM MPs in the region include the Roads Minister Franklin Bett {Buret},Home Affairs Assistant Minister Beatrice Kones {Bomet} and Energy Assistant Minister Magerere Lang’at {Kipkellion} These MPs are so scared and afraid of challenging Ruto, hence they are branded by their electorate as {traitors] therefore nursing the fear of loosing their parliamentary seats to the URP candidates come the March 4,2013 polls.

The only sensible option open to Raila Odinga to regain a foothold in Kipsigis inhabited region is to empower anti-Ruto elements operating from within Kericho and Bomet Counties and outside Parliament.
The men lie Donald Ng’eny, former cabinet Minister John Arap Koech, former Sotik MP Antony Kimeto{Sotet} and the UDM leader Lt.Gen
[rtd} John Koech are capable of taming Ruto’s enormous influence in the region. What Raila Odinga and the ODM should do is to empower these people by way of providing them with ammunition with which the cold use to inflict punctures in Ruto’s popular vehicle traversing the region.
Raila’s close advisers who are arguably the few MPs fro the region that still cling to the ODM obviously lacked political dynamism and magnanimity and their steam to drive Ruto out of the South Rift, though they are aware that the entire population are not comfortable with the Eldoret North MP’s closeness to Uhuru Kenyatta.

The entire population in the South Rift believes Raila Odinga stands for the genuine reforms and his anti-impunity crusade is well taken by the voters, they are sometimes getting confused with sweet tongue deployed by URP agents, MPS and many political hirelings engaged by the party in a protracted propaganda war against Raila Odinga in the region with nobody countering such pack of dreadful lies being spread like bush fire.

The ODM must engaged the UDM on serious discussions and facilitate its activities by providing the party leaders with quick travelling means.UDM influence is well spread into the neighboring Narok North and Narok West as well as Kiligoris constituencies with the Narok County. In these areas, Raila Odinga is sill the darling of the electorate, but he only lacked the well coordinate foot solders to carry on the party flame into the heart of the population. People are left to occasionally hear the ODM gospel on how best to save this nation when Raila himself visited the region.

Raila’s other party MPs, especially those from Luo-Nyanza and KJsii regions bare buy locked in parochial issues and internally political squabbling within their localities thereby preventing them from visiting regions outside their home Province to conduct effective campaign to popularize the party and its presidential candidate.

It could be remembered that it was the Kipsigis political kingpin the late Kipkalya Kones and the Lt Gen {rtd} John koech who facilitated Rala Oding triumphant into Kipsigis region in 2007 when they defiantly hosted “Agwambo” in Kapkatet against the odds including the vehement opposition from KANU and the retired President Daniel Arap Moi. Raila entry into Kapkatet where he addressed the mammoth of crowd was the turn point.

It shifted the Kipsigis politics from KANU to the ODM. This is because Kapkatet Center fro where the late Ex-Senior Chief Cheborge Arap Tengecha had ruled the region with an iron fist for decades during the colonial era up to the early part of Kenya’s ‘s attainment of political independence in 1963 is considered s the heart of Kipsigis politics.

During Raila’s visit he was made an elder of the Kipsigis community and given the name of AraP Mibei an honour, which is specifically bestowed to the most revered to persons.

The next thing if Raila’s presidential votes had not been messed b the disbanded former Electoral Commission of Kenya”Agwambo” would have taken to a special prayer at the Tiluet Ab Kipsigis, the holy shrine in a small hill standing on the right and opposite Kericho Nakuru highway to be installed as the Laitoriat Ap Kipsigisiek [King of the Kipsigis people}. Unfortunately this did not work as planned.

The kipsigis a sub-tribe of the large Kalenjin ethnic group is the most populous community among the dozen or so Kalenjin sub-clans. The community is endowed by the most arable and fertile highland with sufficient annual rainfall making the area to be the favorite region for tea growing. This has made member of this proud community slightly more wealthier than their cousins fro the North Rift due to the sale of green leaves tea crops to the multinational tea companies and KTDA managed eight tea processing factories located in Kericho and Bomet Counties.

The community has the best brains and highest numbers of intellectuals compared to other Kalenjin sub-tribes. Its members despite of high education are always prone to political manipulations by their semi-illiterate cousins from the North Rift who took the advantage of the Moi KANU regime.

During the Moi era member of the community were used and dumped by the self-proclaimed professor of Kenya politics, particularly those who were considered to be potential for accession to the national political outlook and those who won parliamentary seat were technically forced to serve for only one parliamentary term, before being replaced by others greenhorns who were groomed by the government.

This had negative impact to the community and systematically denied its member the accession to the national politic. Level minded member of this community believes and maintained that William Ruto who is also a product and disciples of the Moi regime had the same ambition to ensure that the Kipsigis people are kept in the periphery of the mainstream of Kenya’s politics.

The majority of the Kipsigis people believes that Ruto and URP euphoria would fizzled out fast be fore the ext general election, which only five moths away, and many people would return to the ODM. This is the one single community which had fought in close to three or four tribal clashes with its neighboring communities,

The fears that persist about Ruto style of leadership is given credence by his actions while he was the Deputy leader of the ODM, which allegedly saw him deploying the Moi tactics in locking out of parliamentary race in various constituencies of those who m him he did not favor. The majority of them were rigged out during the primary nominations, which only saw his favorite aspirants winning the preliminaries
The community has lost man of its loved one and property and would like to see peace and tranquility prevailing and the time and inter-communal feuds become the matter of the past and consigned to the dustbins of history.

The vote-rich South Rift regions could raise up to 2 million votes and of course each and every presidential aspirant would like to outshine his rivals in the region so as to benefit from the he number of votes.

Kenya: The relevant ministries should lunch full scale investigation of faulty weighbridges and weighing machines in shops where Kenyan are being fleeced of millions

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City
.
PRIOR to Kenya attaining its political independence and thereafter during the post-independence, there used be the department of Weight and Measures within the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

The responsibility of this department was to send its highly qualified technicians and staff to carry out regular checks on weighing machine shops butcheries and even in bakeries and confectioneries outlets.

It used to detect the activities of unscrupulous traders and businessmen involved in cheating members of the pubic by selling underweight breads or sugar and meat and even maize-flour meals on sales in shops.

The staff of this department kept the traders on their toes, and those who were caught red-handed in the act of cheating customers while using defective or tempered weighing machines were promptly arraigned in courts and if found guilty heavy penalties and fines were meted out.

The technicians used to make regular to all market places and shopping centers visiting butcheries and all the businesses where weighing machines were kept in use as tools of the trade and thereafter inspecting such machines used to stamp them with the government seal certifying the correctness and validity of such machines to be the correct one.

However, for some unknown reason and for some years now, Kenyans do hear no cases of readers being charged with cheating by way of using tempered with weighing machines. What went wrong? Did this important department ceased from existence?

There is public outcry about the rampant cheating through tempered with weighing machines. It is affecting meat eaters, sugar consumers, wheat flours, baked beads, and even maize flour meals selling in shops appeared to be underweight.

The area which appears to have been totally neglected and the hardest hit being those machines used by meat shops and butcheries. Nearly all the weighing machine are tempered with or the purpose of cheating the customers.

It is even much worse in the sugar sub-sector of the economy. There are reports indicating that sugar cane farmers are losing millions of shillings for their raw materials to the sugar mills for crushing. The deliveries are made via weighbridge, which are allegedly tempered with an have remained un-inspected for years as the farmers continue incurring losses running into millions 0f shillings.

The worse scandals being witnessed n the sugar factories owned by Asian investors and under the top management of expatriate managers recruited from India and Pakistan.

The issue of tempered with weighbridge was detected about 15 years ago by the government auditors sent to the government owned SonySugar Company based at Awendo Town in the Migori County. The external auditing team which was sent to the facility by the department of Inspectorate of parastatals in the Office of the President carried to a thorough forensic audit and discovered that sugar cane farmers within the Awendo cane growing zone had suffered the heaviest losses in term of money which was abut Kshs 210 millions within a period of ten year through the faulty or deliberately tempered with weighbridge.

The team made a confidential report, which was seen by this writer. The company took stern disciplinary action, resulting n several weighbridge clerks being fired while some were prosecuted

The grieved cane farmers, however, were not compensated for the losses incurred, and the majority of them even weren’t told of the scam and remained unaware of it to-date. It later emerged that this was an inside work of some of unpatriotic managers at the facility, some of them have since left the services of the company, especially those who were suspected to have benefited from this scandal.

The scam began immediately after the hired foreign management team led by a British consortium multinational company Booker Tate Agricultural International had left Awendo in huff after the expiry of the their managerial contract.

About three years ago a prominent sugarcane farmer in Nandi South district operating around Miwani Chemelil area drove his own tractor loaded with cane which he had harvested in his own farm. He took the cane one of the sugar factories, which are located within the Nyanza sugar belt region.

The farmer had thought the heavy load of raw cane he was ferrying to the factory could be weighing approximately about ten tones. When he drove his tractor through the weighbridge at the facility he was shocked when he was told the load of cane he was carrying could only measure about seven and half tons.

And not satisfied with what had come out of the weighbridge, the farmer drove his tractor to another nearby next sugar factory. There he was told that his cane had weighed ten ton. After this the farmer had realized that he would have lost two half tons had he delivered his cane to the first mil. This particular incident was widely published by nearly all the local dailies, but such adverse publicity has never deterred the sugar millers who continued with their cheats with impunity.

Sugar mills owned by Asians include Sukari Industries in Ndhiwa district, West Kenya Sugar Company in Kakamega County, Butali in Kakamega County, Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries in Kisumu County and Trans-Mara sugar Company in Narok County.

In all the five sugar mils, all senior managerial staff jobs positions are excusively held by Indian and Pakistanis
The issue of the tempered weighbridge at the sugar mills was rekindled last week by the striking cane cutters employed by the Mumias Sugar Company in Western Province.

The chairman of the cane cutters at the Mumias Sugar Company Mr Julius Makanda while making his argument on behalf of the striking cane cutters, was quoted as saying that the workers have rejected the offer of extra 20/-.

He further stated that the employer is currently paying them Kshs 223/ per tone harvested I a day. However, it has been difficult for the cane cutter to hit the target set of 7.5 tones per day because of the weighbridge at the factory had been tempered with.

Such claims as the one made by workers representative is worth investigation by competent team of experts formed by the government’s relevant ministry. Most of the harvesting work at Mumias sugar Company and in the mils are carried out in the farms owed by the small scale out growers who might be losing millions of shillings through the tempered with weighbridges.

It is high time the government take the issue of cane farmers being fleeced of millions of their hard earned money through this kin of shameless scam.

Five sugar mills located at the various locations in Western Kenya are owned by Indian investors. The workers in these facilities are reportedly being exploited to the maximum. They are not issued with the letters of appointment and eve those who have served the mills for over ten year remained on casual master -rolls. Mandatory salary deduction such NSSF or NHIF are things the past.

The Kenya Union of Sugar Plantation Workers appeared to have been compromised or its officials re sleeping on the job. This particular union seemed to have ceased to exist. It has never raised its voice abut hired of foreign worker being recruited from India and Pakistan who have flooded the job market with the sugar industries thereby depriving the indignant Kenyans of the scarce employment opportunities.

The expatriate workers some of who are not even properly qualified are the ones holding important jobs such as account clerks, engineers, mechanics, electrical mechanics, fitters, welders, time-keepers, cane yard clerks, weighbridge clerks.

This is done despite Kenya having trained thousands of workers in these categories even in excess of it is industrial output. Some of the Indians and Pakistanis are even working as tractor driver and cooks and as lowly laced job such as sweepers, office messengers etc.

These unqualified expatiate workers should pack and go home and create job opportunities for hundreds of unemployed Kenya youth shoo-leavers.

The fitters who were temporarily imported into the country for the purpose of helping during the installation of new cane milling machines and have stayed on jobs should be made to vacate and ordered out.

Members of the current parliament representing sugar cane growing regions also stand blamed for not effectively articulating for the farmer problem. The majority of them it is being alleged to have succumbed to mega bribery, which appeared to have put them into total silence.

Rumors are also rampant that some of them MPs have benefited by way of having the materials used in building and construction of their palatial houses in their rural homes were corruptively sourced or supplied by the sugar mills barons to silent them.

The time, therefore is ripe for the electorate in the sugar cane growing regions to the a serious note about the conduct of their MPs ad ensure that such people are voted out during the impeding general election a replaced by energetic and those committed to assist the excessively exploited sugar cane farmers and cane cutters.

Both the immigration and Labor Ministries also stand to be scathingly criticized for not effecting and properly implementing the government laid down policy on the employment of expatriates in this country.

Kenya: Dr.Ouru Odinga ambition for Siaya Senate seat facing total rejection by local MPs, civic leaders and the electorate

UNLESS THE GOVERNMENT TAKES STRINGENT SECURITY PRECAUTION MEASURES SOME PARTS OF WESTERN KENYA COULD TURN TO BE CHAOTIC DURING THE NEXT GENERAL ELECTIONS.

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City

ALTHOUGH the usually volatile violence prone Counties in Southern Nyanza and Kisii regions are still quiet with no major ugly incident so far as the county is only five months away from the impeding general elections, reports emerging from Siaya and Kisumu Counties are all painting gloomy future.

Within last week lone the two regions witnessed ugly incidents which should be the matter of grave concern for those responsible for the security and safety of Kenyan citizens. All these incidents are pointing to the direction of shape of things to come during the next general elections which is only five months away.

Two senior politicians in Siaya and Kisumu were forced to flee the venues where they were conducting functions at different venue for their dear lives following the invasion of the venues by marauding, drunken and heavily drugged hired goons.

The two politicians were the Finance Assistant Minister Dr. Oburu Odinga who is also the MP for Bondo. The other one is the Education Assistant Minister Prof. P Ayiecho Olueny who is also the Muhoroni MP.

Olueny was forced out of funeral home in Kaumswa in North East Kano, Nyando district within is Muhoroni constituency in Kisumu County. Prof Olueny was among the hundreds of mourners who had attended the burial of the brother of the Nyando County Council Samuel Onyango Ong’ou..

Scores of people sustained bodily injuries during the commotion with unconfirmed reports that two people were stabbed with knives and sustain serious injuries.

While the funeral program was in progress Prof Olueny’s arrival in Muhoroni political derby James Onyango Koyoo, a Nairobi business man triumphantly stormed the funeral home accompanied by close to 300 rowdy youths sparking off a chaotic and ugly incidents.

The Assistant Minister’s plea for calm and orderly hit the rock. Olueny’s youth and supporters appeared to have been shocked and scared as they were also outnumbered by K’Oyoo’s rowdy goons. Fighting ensued and the mourners took to their heels. It was during the commotion that several people especially elderly men and women were run-over by the fleeing mourners in th4e stampede that followed.

The MP also vanished in the crowd and left the venue.

Prior to his death in a helicopter crash on June 10th the former Assistant Minister for Internal Security the late Joshua Orwa Ojode had suggested that all the funeral gatherings inside Luo-Nyanza would in the future require public meeting s licenses from the police so that the security men could be presence and monitor the proceeding an also to protect the lives and property of the bereaved families an funeral goers.

Unfortunately Ojode died accidentally before putting his suggestion into place. The Minister was reacting to an incident in Kaspul-Kabondo where MPs, ministers, and Councilors were forced out and had to be escorted to safety by the police when the fighting erupted.

During the same weekends the Finance Assistant Minster Dr. Oburu Odinga was forced to cut-short his speech at a campaign public rally in Siaya Tow after a man was spotted among the crowd brandishing a panga {machete} apparently suspected of planning to attack the Assistant Minister wit the weapon.

The man whose name was given only as Otieno was cornered, subdued by the Minister’s security details and supporters who beat him savagely before frog-matching the suspect to the nearby police station where he was take into custody. Within minutes, the suspect’s nine accomplices who had attempted to storm the police station while demanding that the suspect be released from the police custody were also arrested and take into custody.

It later emerged that the group were part of the to of the hired goons to cause mayhem and to intimidate Dr Oburu Odinga who is involve in the cut-throat sot of the campaign for the Siaya County Senate seat which the Lands Minister James Aggrey Orengo is his arch-rival.

What has emerged is that all the Siaya MPs have ganged agaist Dr. Oburu Odinga bid for the Senate seat. They are all favoring his arch-rival the Lands Minister James Aggrey Orengo who is the Ugenya MP. Orengo is also favored by the electorate who feels Dr Odinga candidature is not viable considering that fact the same electorate are being asked to vote for his younger brother the Prime Minister Raila Odinga who all seemed to have agreed to vote for in his presidential bid.

However, one MP has remained neutral over the issue. He is the Alego-Usonga MP Edwin Ochieng Yinda. But the MP has since lost hi patency then he discovered that Dr Oburu Odinga has appointed his formidable challenger in Alego-Usonga parliamentary seat contest Charles Odunga Mamba a wealthy Kisumu hotelier to be one of his campaign manager. MP Yinda has since feel provoked changed his mind and lost his patience and has joined hands with his other parliamentarian colleagues in Siaya in opposing Dr Odinga candidature for the senate seat

Dr Oburu Odinga made an error in drafting Mr Odunga Mamba into his campaign team, and MP Yinda has since read mischief arguing that Dr. Odinga was grooming Mr Odunga Mmba to grab is Alego Usonga seat. Mp Yinda who is arguably one of the wealthiest Luo MP and businessmen

And representing a constituency which covered Siaya Town, things seemed to work against .Oburu Oginga, who at later date might find himself confined strictly to conduct his campaign inside his Bondo consttuency.

All the Siaya MPs including Dr Oburu Ognga’s own cousin Jakoyo Midiwo {Gem} Nicholas Gumbo {Rarieda and Edwin Ochieng’ Yinda Alego Usonga are vehemently opposed to Dr.Odinga candidature I the Senate contesting. They have been joined by civic leaders from all the six constituencies of Alego-Usonga, Rarieda, Bondo, Gem, Ugenya and the newly created Ukwala.

They consider Dr. Oburu Odinga ambition to grab the Siaya Senate seat as part of the excessive arrogance on the part of members of the Odinga family. Dr.Odinga younger sister Ruth Adhiambo Odinga is vying for Kismu County governor position to the chagrins of the local people.

The popular saying now is that members of the Odinga family who wished to contest any elective seat should do so in side their Bondo district which their home turf and not elsewhere, but all agreed to support Raila’s presidential ambition.

KENYA: THE KALENJINS RISKED BEING LOCKED OUT OF THE NEXT GOVERNMENT UNLESS THEIR LEADERS STOP HOPPING FROM PARTIES AND BEING MANIPULATED BY DECEITFUL POLITICIANS FROM OTHER REGIONS.

News Analysis by Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town.

THERE is a strong feeling and beliefs that members of the Kalenjin community could be locked out of the next government unless their political leadership take a bold step and stop the bad habit of hopping from parties.

The inconsistency on the part of some MPS has made the Kalenjin region the cheapest vote hunting ground for deceitful politicians from other region.

These political tourists have made the Kalenjin region their easiest target of political manipulation and found the Kalenjin MPs the easies group for flirting with and luring out of their party into other parties, making the most vulnerable party hoppers in this country.

Fears persist among the level minded Kalenjin politicians that lack of exposure to political intrigues, which could easily make the community lose out to at the next general election and find it locked out of the next government.

Owing to these manipulations and maneuvers, the Kalenjin leaders have lost out to wealthy politicians from other regions who have been spending millions in confusing the Kalenjin MPs into hopping from one party to the other weakening their status and stand in the national politics. The community has not yet to build one strong party which they can call their own, and use as a popular vehicle to propel one of their own to the presidency.

The manipulation and maneuvers have hurt members of the Kipsigis sub-tribe more than any other Kalenjin sub-tribes. This particular community, which is arguably, the most populous and votes rich, has failed to produce one of their own sons with the national political outlook for possible for future leadership at the national level, thereby reducing the otherwise strongest community to playing only the third fiddles and supportive role for others.

The Kipsigis is so divided to an extent the community cannot rally behind one of their own sons and propel him to become a national political leader with the national appeal.

During the rein of the retired President Daniel Arap Moi,the former head of state was being blamed for having perfected in the art of using individual politicians within the Kipsigis community and dump them.

The practice is still the same ten years down the line ever since Moi was voted out of power in 2002. This community with the highest number of intellectuals and whose members are relatively much wealthier in comparison with the Kalenjins people from other regions are still vulnerable to political manipulation and easy prey for politics of deceits by outsiders have penetrated deep into Kipsigis land.

In 2007 members of the Kipsigis community voted for ODM leader Raila Odinga on man-to-man, but within only three months, especially soon after the formation of the coalition government of PNU/ODM, some MPs from the ODM side who failed to secure cabinet posts jumped the party bandwagons, shouting the loudest about the unfair distribution of ministerial slots by Raila Odinga, who they claimed to have favored their cousins from the Nandi community of the North Rift.

At the material time, the coalition government collectively arrived at a decision to eject the legal squatters out of the Mau Forest, one o the most important water towers in the country. The ODM Raila Odinga was assigned with the task of implementing this import government policy in carrying out the eviction for the thousands of illegal squatters and the rehabilitation of the Mau Forest and to ensure its fresh reforestation.

Some of the MPs, especially those from the Kipsigis community were later discovered to give benefited in the illegal settlement in The Mau Forest, and as such were fighting hard to maintain status quo. On of the most outspoken MP, it was later established had bought some of the illegal squatter’s ancestral land back in the Kipsigis reserve land with the promise to reward those whose land he had bought and converted to his own land plot were among the squatters ordered by the government out of the forest land.

This particular MP knew the eviction would expose his tricks, started to mobilize his colleagues inside and out of parliament into well orchestrated political campaign based on heap of lies against the Prime Minister whom they unfairly blamed for the problems facing their people. They used Raila Odinga as scapegoat for the simple purpose of gaining political cheap mileage.

And this how anti-Raila elements within the coalition gained free entry into ODM hierarchy and started buying out MPs whose lust for money made them easy prey to politicians outside Kipsigis region.

Back at home the residents of the two counties whose inhabitants re mainly the Kipsigis, it has been established beyond any reasonable doubt that the carrying with them the tug of “MPs for Sale”.This tug has come about owing to their inconsistency and hoping from one political party to the other and shifting allegiances through the formation of numerous amorphous tribal political alliances with no direct benefit to the electorate.

The recent mass exodus of Kalenjin MPs is clear testimony to the alleged politics of buyout. It does not come on free will, but as the result of lust for money, and general fears among the Kipsigis people is that the Kalenjin people in genera and the Kipsigis community in particular might find themselves locked out of the next government and perhaps consigned alliances after the other with consequences of failing to identify the political party with the better prospect of winning the next general election and forming the next government.

The Kalenjin community ha always been part of the government of the day ever since the country attained its political independence in 1963.

As the situation stands today, the Kalenjin people have no party of their own nor any political party they can claim to represent the community interests at heart and which is capable of successfully appealing to the neighboring communities cannot trust them as reliable political partners due to their temperamental nature of hopping from party to party one after the other. And because of inconsistencies of their leaders from other communities don’t trust them.

The strong willed Kalenjin nationalists of the struggle for political liberation of Kenya like the late Taitta Arap Toweett, William Murgor, Daniel T.Moi, John Majorie Seroney had stood steadfastly firm alongside their colleagues from other communities and joined hands in giving the colonialist the sleepless nights eventually forced them out of the country in 1963.

They turned down the temptation by the white supremacists and racists who made vain attempt; to have them bribed cheaply, though the white settlers had millions readily for bribery purposes so that independence could be delayed for longer period time.

This is in big contrast to the current crops of Kenyan MPs who are said to be readily corruptible with as little money as Kshs 20,000 as per the recent claims made publicly by the Ikolomani MP Dr Bonny Khalwale against accusing his colleagues.

Several political parties are on the ground in the Kalenjin region hunting for the community votes. Prominent among them is the URP, which is led by the Eldoret Mp William Ruto, KANU LED BY Gideon Moi, TNA led by Uhuru Kenyatta,UDF led by Musalkia Mudavadi, Wipper Orange Demoratic led by Nicholas Kiprono Biwott,UDM led by Lt. Gen {rtd} John Arap Koech, and the ODM led by the Prime Minster Raila Odinga.

In the South Rift region o the expansive Rift Valley Province, the Kipsigis sub-tribes is well spread in several Counties apart from their home region of Kericho and Bomet. Members of this community lives in part of Narok, Nakuru and Baringo Counties.

There has been kind of cut-throat competition between the URP, ODM, UDM and KANU in the South Rift. And the concepts and misconception that William Ruto’s URP is the party of choice in this region bears a false impression.

This region is still widely open for all the political parties mentioned above. though URP had briefly enjoyed the euphoria that came bout with its formation. But this support has since been fizzled out following its recently flawed and poorly organized grass root elections, which saw it practices the old and outmoded KANU system and tactics of prearranged hand-picking of leaders a the Counties, district and constituencies levels. Instead of putting the party’s structures, the URP leadership is reportedly spending millions funding the defection of MPs and their followers from ODM into its rank and file, some of the defectors known to be dong so for the simple purpose of having access to the party’s coffers for financial gains and political expediency.

Indications are that of the Kipsigis MP who have ditched ODM And jumped into URP bandwagon might not see the inside of the next Parliament gain after the March 4, 2013.

They will be beaten by aspirants from UDM, ODM, KANU AND NVP.But TNA will come empty handed in the South Rift region because the Kipsigis people have no love lost for the Kenya that as whom they blamed for their tribulation and biased distribution o land in the Rift Valley, which has cause the community a lot of strains fighting numerous skirmishes and land clashes ever since 1990s.

The electorate in the South Rift have detected the URP leadership as lacking the political agenda for implementing reforms and improving the standard of living among Kenyans, part from William Ruto’s declared ,but now notorious policy of fighting and preventing the Prime Minister Raila Odinga from becoming the next president of Kenya.

Raila had no role in the Mau Forest eviction exercises he a just implementing the cabinet decision

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo

The younger generations of politicians, particularly the Kalenjin MPs who of late have been pointing accusing fingers at the Prime Minister Raila Odinga blaming him of complicity in the Mau Forest evictions and rehabilitation of this important water tower are simply not telling the truth about the historical background of the matter.

The political history of Mau Forest and other injustices related to the land distribution could as well be traced back to the final constitutional talks on the future of an independent Kenya, which were held inside the famous Lancaster House in London, UK in 1962.

These problems are inter-related to the dismantling of the so-called “White Highland”. It has since emerged that during the round table constitutional talks, the African delegates who were then representing two major political parties of the time, namely KANU and KADU were subjected to too much blackmailing by the White Settlers representative and those representing colonial authorities.

And due for the then clamor for political independence and the liberation of the country fro the colonial York to an independent African government, they hastily and hurriedly rubber-stamped many clauses in the then new Lancaster House constitution that wee only meat for the protection of white settlers and their properties.

Kanu delegates were led by the founding President the late Jomo Kenyatta, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Tom Mboya, James Samuel Gichuru, Eliud Ngala Mwanda, Muhinga Chokwe and other party stalwarts like Dr Julius Gikonyo Kiano,Samuel Onyango Ayodo, and Mbiyu Koinange.

The KADU team was led by Ronald Gideon Ngala, Daniel T. Moi, Masinde Muliro, Taaitta Arap Toweett, Marie John Seroney,Peter Habenga Okondo, William Murgor and John Keen.

The moderate white settlers were led by Michael Blundell, Sir Charles Markham, Mrs Agnes Shaw, Mrs Dorothy Hughes, Bruce Mackenzie,Sir Alfred Vincent ,Culwick and Crosskill, R.S Alexander and Humprey Slade.DEREK Eriaskin and others.

There were also extremist’s racists’ white supremacists like major BP Roberts, Major F Day, Aircomodore Howard Williams and others. Ex-officio representatives included the Governor, the deputy Governor,Sir Patrick M Renson, the Chief Secretary, W.F.Coutts and Minister for legal Affairs Griffith Jones ,Q.C. and others.

The Indian community were represented by the likes of Avind Jammidar, Ibrahim Nathoo, D.B Kholi, J.S Patel, F. De Souza, C.B.Madan, K.P Shah

Due to the clamor for political independence, KANU AN KADU delegates to the talks were coerced and blackmailed by the representatives of the Her Majesty government at the Whitehall and Colonial Office led by the then Secretary of State for the British Colonies Duncan Sandys to succumbed easily to the white settlers demands for compensation for those who wished to leave the county at the independence.

The British government at the same time readly made available millions of sterling British pounds, which was to be given to the new Kenya government headed by he late Jomo Kenyatta. The money was meant to be utilized in compensation payout to the departing white settlers and partly to be used in the purchasing of the farms owned by European settlers and other for properties and partly for the settling of the millions of the landless African people of Kenya.

Immediately when the independence came and the white settlers had realized that the new African government had the money for the compensation of their land an property, there was mass exodus of whites despite of the repeated assurances given by Jomo Kenyatta and member of the post-independence cabinet that their property would be given maximum security protection under the Bill of Right entrenched in the Lancaster House constitution, the majority of the whites settlers numbering about 200,000 in population opted to go out of Kenya for green pasture elsewhere.

The new independent government half-heartedly used the money in settling few African population in Subukia, Rongai, Londiani, Molk, Olkalou, Nyahururu, Laikipia, and other places.

The settlement scheme the re-distribution of the lands were , however, biased and only dished out selectively to favor one particular community [the Kikuyu] at the expense of other needy Kenyans.

The Kikuyus were given farm lands in areas previously considered as the indigenous Kalenjin regions in total disregards of the local indignant communities.

Members of the Kalenjin community dissented to this, but the senior Kalenjin politician of the time who were none other than Daniel Arap Moi and Dr.Taaitta Arap Towett, were happily serving in he post independence cabinet an never raised any objection to the settling of Kikuyu people in area previously considered as the Kalenjin land.

Two Kalenjin politicians, however, were vehemently opposed to the spread of Kikuyu settlement in what they considered as the Kalenjin land. They were Marie John Seroney then the MP for Tinderet and Morogo Saina then the M for Eldoret North. This was the source of hostility between Seroney and the KANU government, which led to both Seroney and Saina being jailed and landed in detention camps following the no in famous Nandi Hills Declaration.

It was the same money given by the British government for the settlement o landless African people of Kenya that Kenyatta is being alleged to have used in acquiring vast plantation s land in Taita Taveta, Mwatate, Ziwani, Laikipia, Ruiru and Salgaa near Nakuru.

Jomo Kenyatta died on August 22nd and hi hen Vice President for 12 years Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi stepped into his shoes at the mantle of power. It was during Moi’s presidency hen the government half-heartedly opened up the Mau Forest and other areas for Kalenjin settlement, most of hem illegal squatters.

The first tribal land clashes between the Kalenjin, Kikuyu, Kisii, Luos, Luhyias were believes to have been launched with the full knowledge of members of the security apparatus during the Moi’s Presidency.

It was also the Moi KANU regime which encouraged tribal land clashes which were meant t cleanse the region of what were commonly called madoadoa colours out of the region

The dreaded Kalenjin warriors were secretly trained an armed with crude weapons in the Embobut Forest, Ndoinet, Marigat and Mau Forest and then ferried on government vehicles an other tracks donated by wealthy Kalenjin businessmen and farmers when they launched three prongs full scale attack on the Kisii in Sotik, Luos in Nyando Valley, Nyakach an luhyias in Lugari and along he Rift Valley-Western Provinces boundaries causing the first internally displaced persons in 1996/97 and the last clashes and the worse of all was in 2007/2008.

The original intention was to keep a bay those who were clamoring for the multi parties system of politics then opposed to the KANU doctrine of the monolithic one party dictatorship.

On the latest opposition to Raila Odinga roe in the Mau Forest saga, the Prime Minister had no personal interests in the forest, but was just executing and implementing the collective decision of the cabinet. Some of the now outspoken MPs like William Ruto were members of the cabinet and at in the cabinet meetings when decision and government plans on the rehabilitation of Mau Forest were being deliberated upon, but they did not raise any objection.

Mr Odinga should be exonerated out f these malicious accusations and falsehood a he has done nothing wrong to the Kalenjin community because the source of injustices done to this particular community as the land redistribution is concerned lies elsewhere and not strictly with Raila Odinga.

News Analysis by Leo Odera Omolo

Kenya and Tanzania have agreed to team up together in a joint concerted effort t save Mara River which experts says is on the verge of drying due to wanton destruction of its most important water catchment, which is the Mau Forest.

KENYA: KANU, NVP AND UDM ELECTION PACT MAY SPELL DOOM TO WILLIAM RUTO’S URP AND TO CUT IT INTO SIZE HIS INFLUENCE IN THE RVP

News Analysis Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town

The reported signing of an agreement political pact between three political parties with substantial following in the Rift Valley Province now signifies the end enormous influence and political clout of the Eldoret North MP William Ruto in the Rift Valley Province in general and within the Kalenjin community in particular.

The three parties reported to have signed an agreement of co-operation to work together a head of the next year’s general election included KANU, National Vision and the United Democratic Movement.

However, political pundits and observers alike say that the new cooperation is widely seen as a ploy aimed at eroding, Ruto’s URP party’s popularity in the Rift Valley, The parties leaders said “they have decided to work together to create a conducive political environment.”

KANU is led by Gideon Moi, the favorite son of the retired President Daniel Arap Moi,while the National Visio Party of Kenya {N.V.P} is led by the former powerful cabinet Minister Nicholas Kipyator Kiprono Biwott {Karnet} or “powerman” and the United Democratic Movement [UDM} is under the leadership of the retired former deputy Chief of the General Staff {CGS} Lt.Gen {rtd} John Arap Koech.

Although Gideon Moi, the former Baringo Central MP is the defector national chairman of KANU, the party of independence, the party is technically virtually still under the control and influence of the retired President Moi, a man whose enormous political clout in the Rift Valley has remained intact ever since he retired from active politics after losing power to a combined fore of the opposition groups under umbrella of Narc Kenya.

From the look of things, it is now up to Ruto to either dissolve his URP party and rejoin and become party of the new group comprising KANU, NVP and the UDM for his own political survivalor perish altogether with his brigade of MPs supporting the URP in the region.

The political scenario set by the new group, according to the observers of the Rift Valley politics will now leave very little rooms for him to maneuver his way out of the onslaught by the combination of this newly formed formidable for an alliance by the three most influential groups of politicians in the region.

Ruto before launching is United Republican Party had had hatched a secret plans to use the UDM as soft landing pad in anticipation of then the inevitable fall out of favor with his former ODM party led by the Prime Minister Raila Odinga. Ruto had made a spirited attempt to wrestle the UDM party out of Gen Koech’s leadership, a move which resulted in protracted legal tussles through courts.

William Ruto and Gen Koech are known not to be in good books. The relationship of the two came cropper during the 2007 general election when the latter accused Ruto and his agents in the South Rit region for having rigged him twice out of the ODM primary nomination in the Ainamoi constituency within Kericho County, and thereafter during the by-election in the same constituency to fill the vacancy which was created following the death of the former MP for the area the late David Koech two months later.

Gen Koech contested the two elections on ODM ticket, but later blamed Ruto and his spanner boy the Belgut MP Charles Keter for allegedly having master minded for his downfall. It was after this political scenario which prompted Gen Koech to move out of the ODM and hatched the plans of reviving the hitherto run-down sleeping UDM by registering the party a fresh with others.

Gen Koech was joined by Ole Kamwaro who became he UDM Secretary-General with himself being made the party national chairman. The General, however, did not severe is link with the ODM leader Raila Odinga, who later appointed him to a head the Poverty Eradication Commission a parastatal which falls under the Prime Minister’s office as its executive chairman.

An unsuccessful attempt to overthrown the General and his team by a group suspected to have been at the behest of sponsorship by Ruto and his friend was met with fiercest opposition by General Koech and his team, hence the beginning of the long and hard fought court cases.

It is worthwhile to remember that it was through the joint efforts of the late Kipsigis powerful politician the late Donald Kipkemoi Kipkalya Kones and General Koech that had paved the way for the Raila Odinga and his ODM to triumphantly gained entry into Kipsigis region of the South Rift in 2007.This effort was later to yield in the ODM’s success in the region in 2007 where members of the Kipsigis community voted for the party on man-to-man.

Report on the round in this agriculturally rich Kipsigis land covering two Counties of Kericho and Bomet is showing that William Ruto is not controlling the Kalenjin politics as such. This is just the simple perception of the newspapers making.

Our dailies have been erroneously reports insisting that Ruto is the new political kingpin of the Rift Valley Province after Moi left the leadership vacuum in the region. Moi’s political clout among he Kalenjin community is still very intact, especially in the South Rift region which is inhabited by members of the most populous Kipsigis sub-tribe of the larger Kalenjin ethnic groups.

The political clout of the self-confessed professor of Kenya’s politics is yet to be fizzled out an anyone who ignore this fact can do so on his or her own peril This is one of the reasons why the political pundits and observers of the Kalenjin politics now say that the new unity pact between KANU NVP and UDM could easily bring to an abrupt end Wiliam Ruto’s excessive arrogance

However, keen observers 0f the Rift Valley politics have been heard saying that the new unity pact between KANU, NVP and UDM posed a real threat to Willam Ruto’s URP. party which he intend to use as a popular vehicles for his access to the State House race during he impending general elections.

Meanwhile a top Kipsigis politician has expressed his unreserved support and endorsement for the unity pact signed at the Weekend between KANU, NVP and County KANU branch secretary. However, he sounded a stern warning to members of his Kipsigis community to be careful about political tribal groupings, saying that this cold isolate them and make hem lose political contacts with other communities. A move them which could keep them out of the successive future governments.

“The wrong assumption that William Ruto’s URP party controls the large section of the residents of the expansive Rift Valley Province is untrue,” said Kettienya.

He went on, “It is important that that the residents of the Rift Valley region, particularly members of the Kalenjin community have been losing essential contacts with the government of the day in the last the years, and this political scenario if allowed to continue unchecked will make the community locked out of any future governments to be formed by other political parties.

The URP anted to keep the whole Kalenjin community under ne basket and I the armpit of William Ruto. The common saying in some parts of the region now is that anybody who consider the option of joining other parties is viewed political outcasts.

The Kalenjins must join other parties like KANU, ODM, UDOM, TNA and others in order to ensure that they booked themselves in the next government which will be formed after the next year’s general elections. He said he personally consider the KANU cooperation with the ODM as the better option.

Kettienya said the days of tribal grouping are long gone, because the time is ripe for Kenyans of good will to think in nationalistic terms instead of parochial and partisan politics which are the recipe of chaos and despondency.

Following the remarks made by in the just concluded Ndhiwa by-election Tom Otieno Onyango Alila, political pundits were quick in saying that the new pact grouping KNU, NVP and UDM could be warming up to the ODM and the presidential bid of its leader Raila Odinga.

Congratulating Gen Koech for having kept his UDM party intact, Ketienya called upon the Kipsigis sub-tribe to join the party en mess in order to provide the party with the necessary ammunition or power bargain after the next general elections.

It has also been established that the euphoria with which the URP had hit the ground with thud in the South Rift Region is quickly be fizzled out as fast as it had come, and the regio is rapidly drifting towards the ODM. Some of the MPs in the area who are have recently turned to be hostile towards the ODM are said to be heading for political limbos come the next general election, which could see completely new faces of MP in the region.

The two Counties of Kericho and Bomet are currently represented in the10th parliament by 8 MPS representing Kipkellion, Ainamoi, Belut, Konoin, Buret, Sotik, Chepalungu an Bomet. All the present legislators were elected on Dom tickets including that of one extra seat in Kuresoi constituency in Molo.

Four of the MPs have since ditched ODM for URP. They included Dr Julius Kones, {Konoin},Isaack Ruto {Chepalungu}, Charles Keter {Belgut} and Benjamin Lang’at {Ainmoi}, The Kuresoi mp Zakayo Cheruiyot had also abandoned the ODM.

However, four of the MP remained steadfastly in ODM.They are Franklin Bett {Buret}. Dr Joyce Laboso {Sotik}, Magerer Lang’at Kipkellion} and Beatrice Kones {Bomet}.

The region was recently awarded with two additional parliamentary seats by the IEBC one in Sigowet in lower region of Belgut district an Kipkellion West..This now means that the Kipsigis region will now post 10 MPs to the next parliament after the impeding general elections

KENYA: POLITICAL PARTIES IN KENYA NEED TO MODIFY THEIR NOMINATION SYSTEM DURING PRIMARY NOMINATIONS OR ELSE ASPIRANTS WOULD CONTEST THE 2013 ELECTIONS AS INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES.

Commentary By leo Odera Omolo.

There has been hue and cry about the flawed nominations during preliminaries, and now that the new constitution has the provisions, which allows for the participation of independent candidates in the election some of the parties would find it extremely difficult to attract aspirants who would contest the election for the various elective positions in 2013.

There has been hue and cry about the much flawed parties weak and undemocratic primary nomination system ever since the violence marred genera elections of 2007. Each time there is a by-election for any vacant parliamentary or civic seats, participants in such election have been coming out fire-spiting with allegations massive riggings.

Other contestants have come out fuming with claims of massive briberies, vote buying, manipulations of such elections by party high ranking officials and the hastily appointed hand-picked returning officers and elections officials, poor arrangements, luck of logistics and inadequacy of election materials and luck of accountability and transparency during such exercises.

However, political parties in this country appeared have tuned deaf and dumb, making no effort to have these anomalies adequately addressed an rectified in time to create democratic space allowing all aspirants their constitutional and democratic rights of participating in the elections.

There is a lot of on-going murmuring everywhere about the legitimacy of political parties preliminaries .Parties have only six months left to have these anomalies rectified and pragmatic policy blueprint governing their primary nomination ushered in.

If this is not done in time, some of the parties might find it extremely difficult to attract candidates who would wish to contest the elections on their tickets.

Alternatively it could be wise for the current 10th parliament before its dissolution before the next general elections to introduce substantive motion in the House to have a fresh debate on the issue of party primary nominations else have this provision abolished it altogether.

Alternatively to make a new provision to have these preliminaries elections by parties conducted by the Interim Election and Boundary Commission {IEBC. It has been proved beyond any reasonable doubt that our political parties cannot an are incapable of conducting any credible preliminaries on their own, hence the need for the IEBC’s active participation in the exercises.

The recent primary nomination conducted by the ODM during Ndhiwa by-election should be a study case. In the controversial preliminary in that particular parliamentary electoral constituency, close to 70 per cent of the electorate were locked out and denied their constitutional and democratic rights of voting in the by-election and the eventually in the election proper, because only less than 10 per cent of the registered voters cast their votes.

Ndhiwa is one of the most populous constituency within the C the greater old Southern Nyanza region n within the County of Homa-Bay followed by the old Kasipul-Kabondo with Rongo and Karachuonyo coming out third and fourth respectively.

Records are indicating that close to 84,000 or more voters are registered in Ndhiwa constituency. But shockingly and surprisingly only about 7,200 people were able to cast heir votes. There could have been more apathy by the voters. However, the number of votes cast represented less than 10 per cent of the registered voters in the just concluded and controversial by-election.

The 7,200 were shared only by six candidates including the declared winner in the by-election which had attracted 23 candidates, therefore these aspirants were denied their constitutional and democratic rights of being voted in.

The same could be said of the close to 77,000 or more the number of voters who were locked out of the exercise and therefore did not take part in the by-election. Why? It is shame and a big shame on the ODM, the party which has all along been boasting of championing the essence of the democratic principles in this county and whose leader rail Amolo Odinga has all along been in the forefront in the struggle for the multi party system of politics and democratic space as well as good governance for years.

I personally visited the various us poorly arranged makeshift polling stations in the expansive constituency, particularly at Magina, Obera,Pala,Ndhiwa, Ratang’a Rapedhi and Kobodo during early hours of the morning. The tuning out by he voters was excellent. But there were no signs of returning officers and election clerks for the best parts of the morning hours. Voters waiting for too long while queuing in the blazing sun outside the polling stations with no signs of election officials on sight There were no ballot boxes nor ballot papers. And after waiting for too long most of the would be voters became disillusioned and highly agitated leading to some ugly and isolated incidents including fist fights erupting in some stations, the majority of the voters opted to go home peacefully.

It appeared that the party big-wigs had someone in min whom they wished to be elected, but kept their secrets I their chest. Off course each of the aspirants had parted with Khs 200,000 paid in cash to the ODM headquarters at the Orange House in Nairobi before being issued with the clearance certificate of participation to the exercise, and one is made to believed that if all the 23 aspirants had paid their cash deposits to the party, the amount could have been sufficiently enough to fray off the costs of printing enough election materials as well as hiring election officials and field supervisors .This was not done. Why? Where this colossal amount of money did goes to?

The ODM has since dissolved its seemingly inept election board previously headed by he former Rangwe MP Eng Phillip Okundi and replace it with the new one whose members re still yet to be named publicly. However, fears persist in many parts of Luo-Nyanza that the next January primary nomination by the party for those intending to contest the elections for various elective positions would not be free and fair.

ODM leaders and members in Luo-Nyanza and elsewhere are suspicious about the intention and the role to be played by members of the so-called party re-loaded team.

Others have bee heard saying they were keeping their option for heir own chest, an perhaps they would opt to run and contest the elections as independent candidates. Similar complaints have been received fro members of the Musalia Mudavadi led URD party in Western Province.

From all these, there are clear indications that some of the existing political parties would not attract and get the sufficient number of candidates to fill the elective positions under the new constitutional dispensation which had re-introduce tri-cameral parliament that including Senate, National Assembly, County governors and County electoral wards.

The fears that persist inside Luo-Nyanza is said to be spreading very fast into the neighboring region of Kisii and the South Rift where the William Ruto lead URP despite having recently conducted the “Kangaroo” like grass root election it which were famous and notorious for “selective elections’ and now ODM and modern day political parties in Kenya.

KENYA: THE CURRENT DISTURBING DEBATE IN PARLIAMENT ON FORMULATION OF NEW POLICY ON THE SUGAR INDUSTRY MIGHT NOT OFFER THE LASTING SOLUTION,

Business News Analysis By leo Odera Omolo

There are disturbing actions and events in the current debate in parliament that point to a business as usual approach to formulating Sugar Industry policy and reviewing policy gaps which have constrained the industry.

For a start, one hopes that the debate is informed by the provisions in the new constitution that transferred responsibility for Agricultural production, processing and marketing to county governments.

Secondly, the current review and consolidation of agricultural sector agencies in research, marketing and regulation as approved by cabinet and pending in parliament should inform the debate on the bill.

The recent events and performance of the industry exemplified by violence in Western sugar belt is a testimony to the failure of the privatization model in the sugar sector. Indeed Mumias the test case for privatization of a public owned sugar is barely surviving, devoting too much energy fighting off leeches stealing its cane investment in name of private sugar mills.

The industry is now in private hands with 6 private mills of Butali, Mumias, West Kenya, Kibos, Sukari and Transmara against 3 public owned mills of Nzoia, Chemelil and Sonysugar yet industry insiders and Kenya sugar board(KSB) statistics depict the public owned mills as more efficient and only units having invested in sugarcane growing.

New private mills are of economically un sustainable sizes of below are all rated below 2000 tons per day. The government was duped in allowing second hand equipment from shut down mills dismantled and relocated to Kenya yet exploiting the tax credit on investments.

This explains the reason behind the engagement of private mills such as Kibos, Sukari, Transmara, Butali in cane poaching as a survival strategy yet calling themselves investors! West Kenya mill never invested in sugar cane hence its resorting to cane poaching on entry of Butali!
The industry institutional framework is weak and support for R & D is poor. KSB spends over 33% of levy on sugar on administration and gives a mealy sum to KESREF for R & D. The institutions KESMA and KESGA representing millers and farmers respectively are moribund! Its a fallacy to assume all is well with respect to farmer representation in KSB.

The present duplicity in farmer representation in KSB through KESGA in sugarcane pricing and by directly elected farmer directors has caused governance accountability challenges and has been exploited by politicians. Farmers lack cooperatives to mobilize resources and collectively bargain in the market with millers.

All out grower companies formed on instigation of previous KSB management under Mr Chahonyo have all collapsed or are in receivership with hugh debts owed to KSB.

From the foregoing one can see that the debate in parliament is largely uninformed and has no input from a wider stake holder framework.

Its therefore logical to conclude that the outcome by way of a revised Sugar act will not solve the myriad industry challenges. Its a pity the farmers lack an impartial voice hence their interests will be auctioned by partisan interests!

Kenya: Hired political mercenaries are heavily funded political mercenaries to block Raila Odinga from accessing State House after kibaki’s retirement

Commentary By Leo Odera Omolo

The impending general elections and the forthcoming ICC trials at the Hague are two sets of weighty subjects which are likely to produce dreadful and professional liars in the same way and manner similar to those five witnessed decades ago during the trial of the famous Kapenguria Six in 1953.

Many not worthy mentioned and hire witnesses have emerged in recent months, some of them suspected to have been bribed to falsely manufacture late and afterthought testimonies incriminating the Prime Minister Raila Odiga with the 2007/2008 post election violence.

There is a lot of similarity to the current on-going well orchestrated anti multiple accusation and allegations, by anti-Raila elements within our nation’s political class, which are aimed at denying “Agwambo” birth and constitutional rights and entitlement Raila’s to succeed President Kibaki upon his retirement.

For those of us who have been here for longer than seven decades Raila’s opponents in their desperate effort to pin him down appeared have erroneously deployed the same crude tactics similar in fashion, style and manner in then scale the colonial authorities in Kenya had hired witnesses who testified in the Kapenguria Trial of the six linking our founding President the late Jomo Kenyatta with criminal offences of organizing and managing the Mau Mau rebellion
The perpetrators and manufacturers of these falsehoods knew it pretty well that what they had told the trial colonial judge at Kapenguria were false and pack of lies, but for their lust for money, they shamelessly testified and gave false testimonies purely for economic gains.

No wonder five years later in 1959, the late Rawson Mbogua Macharia, the key witness for the crown came forward to swear an affidavit disowning and repudiating his testimonies at the famous Kapenguria Six trial.

The garland Kenyan nationalists whose lives were at stake at Kapenguria were headed by Jomo Kenyatta, Paul Joseph Ngei, Bildad Kaggia, Rachard Achieng’ Oneko, Kungu Karumba, Fred Kubai.

Some of us who have been following Kenyatta’s personal history and lifestyle from the year 1948 can honestly testify that Kenyatta had nothing to do with the Mau Mau rebellion nor was he aware f its existence. Men like Fred Kubai, Bildad Kaggi,Dedan Mugo knew something, though not directly involved but not Kenyatta. In fact at one time the former President joined hands with African Christian Bishop in the Mt. Kenyatta region and strongly condemned and denounced Mau Mau activities and its oathings a few weeks before his arrest and detention on the night of October 20,1952. This particular date is so significant because it coincided with the declaration of the state of emergency by the then governor Evelyn Baring.

Macharia eventually paid so dearly for his crime when he was goaled into jail for 18 months after being found guilty on a charge of perjury. Fortunately or unfortunately when Kenyatta was released after completing hi seven year jaile5ece with yard labor and years of eng placed in restriction camps in various remote places in Northern Kenya, the founding President came face to face with Rawson Mbogua Macharia who became his immediate neighbor at Gatundu rural home, though the two remained as no good friends for the rest of their life time, though Kenyatta in his fatherly heart had preached and taught us to embrace he spirit of forgiveness, but not to forget, Macharia remained in political limbo and lived as pauper and led a squalid life next to the home of an excessively wealthy family of Jomo Kenyatta.

The story of Maharia is still very fresh in the minds of level minded Kenyans and should serve as a deterrent to those hell-bent on making false and concocted testimonies against other fellow Kenyans. To desist from engaging on such not so honorable and respectable exercises which are tan amounting to betrayal doing so .The ma end up paying the prices for their heinous actions the same way the Biblical Judas of Iscariots and Rawson Macharia of Kenya.

I am writing this comment because I was recently taken back when I read stories in the newspaper column that some not very upright Kenyans who were desperately looking for the way how they could take what they called fresh evidence to the Hague in Netherlands that could link the Prime Minister with criminal offences committed by other people who incited other Kenyans to slaughter and butcher one another in the aftermath of the post-election violence.

Of course, these are the modern day Macharias. Such people must be told that they should tread carefully even if the have been paid handsomely to save the neck of their kin and kins facing ICC trials on a fee.

It is also imperative to remind the anti-Raila that ”Agwambo” has two prominent distinguished constituencies in this country. The Raila Odinga constituency are the people. His overzealous and near fanatic supporter would always vote for him no matter how one succeeded in mad slinging him.

The second constituency comprises those who hate Raila Odinga. No matter how good he has performed and carried out his Prime Minister’s office work. No matter how hard “Agwambo” work in a concerted effort to delivery the goods to the electorate and even in solving the problems of individual families in dire need of assistance.

Many greenhorns and political novices appeared to have turned Raila Odinga their punching bags, but this is to the chagrins of the silent millions of Kenyans who valued the work being done by the Prime Minister and have held him in the highest esteem against his fellow competitors and presidential aspirants.

Raila Odinga is not a corrupt leader as he is being portrayed to be by his detractors and hired political mercenaries acting at the behest of his cowardice rivals who appeared to be suffering from crisis of confidence after failing to articulate their individuals’ policies and those of their makeshift political parties and amorphous G7-tribal alliance.

I am glad that after failing to convince the Kenyan voters of by providing them with agendas of what they intended to do for Kenyans if they are vote in resorting to singing some old lyrics o the late 1950s by the late John Mwale and Isaya Mwinamo Both talented guitarists/musicians were from Tiriki in Vihiga dstrict Western Province, some of the songs which obviously are close to hurling insults to “Agwambo” and clearly amounted to the hate speeches, which are prohibited by the law of the land, and only time will as to who has the interest of Kenyan people at heart.

The presidential race is still widely open, and only require those panicking about”Agwambo soaring popularity need only to change tacts and resort to issues oriented campaign in place of hurling abuses.

Kenyans are very much aware that every tricks in the books were being placed on ‘Agwambo path and route to State House . It is no longer the game of foolhardy and Kenyans areno mnore simple spectators, but would soon ensure that every presidential aspirant who sowed the seed of discord can only harvest what he had sown when the game come to a finale halt.
