This is Africa
What do you know about young style icons, abstract art performance or electronic dance music from Africa? Let This Is Africa introduce to you some of the innovative cultural scenes in Africa, focussing in this update on Southern African artists, musicians and directors.
We kick off with Cream Cartel, the most fashionable TV series you’ve ever seen.
South Africa and Angola lead the continent in fashion trends and dance music. The trend in fashion is to use bold colours and mix all sorts of styles to create something eye-catching. The streets of Jo’burg and Cape Town are the catwalks of the urban youth. Hair? Just pile it up, fix it and shock your older neighbours.
A similar innovation is taking place in music coming from Southern Africa’s urban areas. The house/electronic sounds of Spoek Mathambo and Okmalumkoolkat are slowly but surely being picked up in European clubs, while Die Antwoord is redefining music video.
Angola created its own music subculture centred around Kuduro: a house beat with a tempo of up to 135 BPM, setting Portuguese clubs on fire. Just do the Cabo Snoop test.
Even the alternative music scene is now taking root in the Motherland. Check the Alternative Kidz to get a picture of raw guitars and grunge in Africa.
These developments call for a different view of Africa’s share in global fashion and subcultures. Africa is not following the conventions from Europe, US or Asia, instead the innovative urban youth are writing their own rules and creating something new, and what’s emerging is being noticed internationally.
Find out about it daily on This Is Africa where we will bring you many more of these trend updates from Southern Africa and other regions and countries across the map.

Sanaa Africa held an exciting three day festival to celebrate Africa’s Spirit. In celebration of Africa Day (May 25), from May 27 – 29. The celebration embraced Africa’s rhythmic heart and vibrant soul by hosting some of the continent’s most exhilarating art, entertainment, music and more. The weekend’s festivities was hosted at Moyo Zoo Lake and I did a “Fashion meets Music” showcase.
It was a chilly-yet-sunny Saturday morning. I was sick with flu, but all the excitement around me pumped me up and I got through the day with ease. I started in the morning with a sound check with my fabulous band and then I did a model casting and fittings.
My show commenced at 1pm on Saturday 28 May. I slowly hummed beautiful melodies and harmonies as I begun singing and slowly the models strutted in one after the other in different pieces of my clothing range to join me as I shared my stories…
LIFESTYLE OASIS DURBAN JULY – DURBAN PREVIEW
The Lifestyle Oasis Durban July – Durban Preview, showcased the latest ranges by SA’s TOP Designers and introduced a young “haute” talent, in anticipation of the Durban July. I was part of the designer line up and did a “Fashion meets Music” showcase.
I arrived in Durban looking totally out of place wearing my heavy winter boots and my Imani woolen trench coat, as I had just left freezing cold Joburg and arrived to the warm, highly inspiring city of Durban. I swear I could have been in Mombasa.
The Lifestyle Oasis event took place at the Docklands Hotel. It was a great opportunity to yet again present my very unique and special concept “Fashion meets Music”.
I had 10 beautiful gazzelles (very tall girls) that took part in my show that made my day. They helped me showcase my collection tastefully and my showcase was welll received by the audience.
After my showcase I enjoyed the Durban vibe at the event and took pictures with beautful people like the ladies below.
Durban July will be bigger and better and even more diverse………watch this space!
LIFESTYLE OASIS DURBAN JULY – JOHANNESBURG PREVIEW
I shared my story at the Lifestyle Oasis Johannesburg preview at Melrose Arch Fire and Ice through a Kensoul performance. I was accompanied by a three piece band, bass keys and vocal. I sang Sega and Le Coeur. The crowd was very receptive and it was a great performance.
The event was filled with fashionistas and I ended up socialising and networking for the rest of the night true Joburg style.
*All pictures from the above events are available on my Facebook page.

WATCH BIG NYASH VIDEO!
“Big ass in the blue jeans” carrying the nickname, “Big nyash” was my 1st music video which was shot in Cape Town under director Oluyinka Davis and Co. I composed and wrote the song as a campaign song to denounce the ‘size zero models while celebrating the “Nyash.”
This video took a day and we nailed all the elements I wanted within the visual story. The humour, the 60’s 70’s inspiration through the wardrobe and interaction among the cast, the simplicity of it and the minimalist approach we all took. Less is more and ‘Big nyash’ is even more when relayed simply.
I was hoping for more Nyash as casted for the video, but somehow, the bigger behinds did not show up and in that case, I decided to take it easy and maximize on what we had to work with.
The synergy was amazing and despite a few little hitches, we held it down and made it happen just the way I had anticipated http://www.youtube.com/lizogumbo

From the ZILIZOVUMA VCD.
At one time in the 80s, this band boasted a stellar set of talents. Among them were Michael Enock [ex Daresalaam Jazz], Freddie Ndala Kasheba &Hassani Bitchuka R. [ex Juwata], Muhiddin Gurumo Maalim, Maxmillian Bushoke, Cosmas Tobias Chidumule [ex Kurugenzi jazz], Hussein Jumbe [ex Urafiki], Mohammed Mwinyikondo, Benno Villa Antony, Francis Lubua Nasir, Abdallah Gamah, Joseph Mulenga, Abel Balthazar [ex Juwata], Kassim Mponda. Not sure about two others named Kinyasi M. and Hamisi; and another Jumbe [Fresj] who may have come from Juwata jazz..
And the line-up kept on changing as some left and came back, like in 1983 when about seven, including Bitchuka and Gurumo, left to form O.S.S.
NB: Anybody with more extensive knowledge please fill me up on the gaps. For instance: Did Enock, mostly on sax in DDC but earlier on a solo legend at Dar, record playing solo guitar with DDC? On which tracks? Were there two Jumbes, or just one, changing names at different periods?

Omollo Gaby, whether in Segasega, Komesha or moonlighting with the Ajumas Toto and Odundo, had a knack for capturing the psyche of the populace in vice-wise fashion!

Tom Kodiyo remakes of old Ramogi hit songs.
Pesa Orumo [Financially Ruined] [5:50] is a song about fake friends and a friend in need. See translation within. Opiyo Timmy celebrates ‘Budho’, a famous party organised at this man’s home, where guests, musicians and their groupies did their things endlessly in delight.
For nostalgic reasons I post the original Opiyo Timmy too. For those who remember their father’s first record-players at Kaluo. Red sanyos with two-cover speakers, brown philips in compact suitcase models. Kassanga vinyls that turned convex in the hot sun. The amazement as even the dogs stopped fighting the cats over fish-bones to gape at the unevenly spinning turn-table, as returnees from the city introduced us to recorded music under the siala and ojwok and oyieko trees! Ah, how time flies.

This is actually a TOM KODIYO with Metric Dumbe Dumbe remake. But stalwarts of the original CK, like Jim Likembe, Billy Gaston and Joseph Atumbo, do contribute their skills.
Was in a bus the other day [all the way from Arusha] bound for Isbania and to Mbita port, when I asked some bus-park vendors for some DDC music. They said: Bongo F. ndiyo inateremka sana na ndizo tunazo! I said I am old school, Marijan, Ongala, Bitchuka are my heart. The young men laughed at my old fashioned takes, but a shopkeeper who was going to urinate overheard us, rushed back and fetched me this VCD for free! His personal collection!

Michael Jackson Daddy Music
My mama cried out from the living room
I heard her in the driveway
Could feel the tears as she
Mourned in front of the computer screen
He’s Dead
“Oh no
He’s dead!”
Little Michael
ABC 123 Michael
1 year younger than her
Icon she watched when all the brown children sported
Afros and Bellbottoms while singing Rockin Robin
What happened to little mike
That beautiful brown boy
Wide nosed boy
5 make you feel fine
Vibe
All the way live boy
It doesn’t matter
What they say against you
We love you
Our
Daddy Music
Won’t know how to
Groove without you
You you
Wonder
They wondered good lord
What make that boy man king
Move like that
We said
He is we is
0A
Wonder thunder Black Joy unveiling
Michael…Michael
What happened?
Why bless us
Lift us
Astound us
And leave us
So soon?
Shall we rock you
Dance you
Love you tonight
Michael?
Little Michael
Thriller in the mirror machine
Dancing on moons
Smooth Dangerous Beatin It Down Criminal
Don’t Stop Don’t Stop
We ain’t got
Enough
Little Michael
Sleep
We’ll sing to you now
All the soul you fed us
Sleep
We’ll dance for you now
All the Spirit you gave us
Sleep
Glistening Gliding Golden Wonder
Little Michael
Sleep
We’ll remember the time
And
we will
Never say goodbye

What do you know about young style icons, abstract art performance or electronic dance music from Africa? Let This Is Africa introduce to you some of the innovative cultural scenes in Africa, focussing in this update on Southern African artists, musicians and directors.
We kick off with Cream Cartel, the most fashionable TV series you’ve ever seen.

INNOVATIVE SUBCULTURES, HIGH EXPECTATIONS
http://www.thisisafrica.me/
South Africa and Angola lead the continent in fashion trends and dance music.

SANAA AFRICA

As famous as Lunch Time, and as notorious as ‘nyako miel amiela pod itin, pod iluongi ni tineja, to ibende ma e ndaloni!’. And Gor Mahia and Mr. Agoya. Omollo Gaby, whether in Segasega, Komesha or moonlighting with the Ajumas Toto and Odundo, had a knack for capturing the psyche of the populace in vice-wise fashion!
I rescued this one from my father’s decaying library.
Tom Kodiyo sings George Ramogi: Pesa Orumo, Opiyo Timmy

Uploaded by Jarawilla on Mar 20, 2011
