GLCSE: Travelling from USA to Kenya any soon? then you need to read this…

ALL,

Are you traveling from the US to Kenya any time soon? If yes then read on.

I run a community libraries back home, somewhere in Rangwe, Homa-Bay district. The community libraries are part of a charity project, Griffin Leadership Center of Service and Excellence (GLCSE). This charity focuses on empowering the less-fortunate, particularly the orphans and widows, by way of education through regular feeding programs, buying school uniforms, availing necessary study material other than what the schools provide, organizing holiday tuition camps for the youth in the project, among many others.

Now to my request to those traveling to Kenya: I rely on persons and friends like you to travel with a suitcase of text books from me. I will foot any bills needed by the customs in case my luggage may come as an excess to the ones you have for your safari. But if you may just accept to deliver the package as a gesture to support good cause, then that will be very kind and helpful of you. After you reach Kenya, I will organize for a staff from Griffin Center to meet you and pick up the luggage. I need to also mention that, other than offering delivery services, you may also contribute to this project by donating books or whatever material that may be useful for school.

Meanwhile, I am very grateful to those people who have responded to this post in its initial appearance in Jaluo.com site. There is always room to do more, and I do believe that we can pull it together in so many ways to develop the educational standards in those areas that are still lagging behind. GLCSE is a major project and more is coming up that I will be sharing with everyone in jaluo.com. Education is the key to unlocking the potential of every life and the earlier we invest upon the upcoming generation the better. This way, we will empower generations upon generations. You too can join in a worthy cause!

I will most appreciate your help in this wonderful effort.

NB: The center is named after the late director and founder of Starehe Boys’ Center, Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin. He is one great man in the living history who mentored me to the person I am today.

I look forward to reading/hearing from you.

Many thanks to Jaluo site owners for accepting to expose this item to its audience.

Fw: ODM MEMBERS LETTER

Folks,

When we have to face challenges of politiking, we must be prepared to be both in the giving and receiving political punches.  Even those who made it to the top braved the same hardships, sometimes worse.  It is always said that if you cannot stand the heat of fire in the Kitchen, stay out of it.  Let those who can brave the heat stay in the kitchen.

I recently received various email exchanges asking me to stay out of internet and stop my kind of Kenyan Political Conversation in the internet email exchange then a letter followed in the mail (which I hereby attach) without any signature or from whom it is coming.  I treat such letters as threats, trying to instil fear in me.  I suspect I can detect the author of the letter since it has same sounding connotations like the email I received from Mr. Opon on the same subject.

Whether I am an ODM or not, I have passion in bringing about Good Democratic Governance and to be a part of those wishing to bring sensible politics back to Kenya, so we can together set goal standards to all citizens of Kenya and shape values instead of divisive politics and those of the assassins.  Being in America a blessed land, I got my voice back where I could continue to voice for the vulnerable and voiceless, so in my participation in politics I may turn the pain as well as those of others into rich memories in the future, that people in public life and those in leadership ought to be accountable.  The world is a good place when people have good intentions not selfish and mean attitudes.

Because the author or authors did not sign the letter, it may mean a lot of sinister motives and so I thought I should share with the authorities and the public hoping they will come to the open and explain themselves further.

I therefore attach the letter for your comments.

Thanking you comrades,

Judy Miriga

Matthew 25:35-40

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.

Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?

The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Thank you so much for your input.

Fwd: HOW OBAMA CAN WIN

By DICK MORRIS

Published in the UK Times.

Most aspiring presidents and prime ministers face a myriad of
challenges as they embark on their journey.  Issue controversies,
questions about ethics or past conduct, wounds within the party all
raise their heads and confront the candidate.  But the doubts Barack
Obama faces are far more existential than the more superficial
questions raised about most candidates.  They go to his very core as a
person and call into question his values, his worldview, and even his
patriotism.

Hard racial divisions have softened in America but fear of the “other”
persists.  Their possible next president has a strange name.  He grew
up in Hawaii and Indonesia.  He had a Muslim Kenyan father who left
when he was a baby.  He made his political career in the cesspool of
American politics — the traditionally corrupt Chicago Democratic
machine.  His pastor of twenty years after whose sermons he entitled
his book seems to hate white people in general and America in
particular (despite getting $15 million in federal funding for his
church).  His wife says she is now proud of America for the first time
in her adult life – and she’s in her mid forties.  He is a bit of a
reach for the average American voter.

If he were white, with similar associations, he would be suspect.  But
he comes from a world few white voters know or understand and the fear
lingers that he is some kind of latter-day Manchurian candidate, a
sleeper agent, poised to take control of the United States government.

What makes all this particularly difficult to fathom is that Barack
Obama is a mild mannered intellectual, with a marvelous sense of poise
and decorum,  who handles himself eloquently and with dignity and
comes to politics with a style and grace we have not seen since JFK.
His pedigree includes Columbia University and Harvard Law where he was
editor of the Law Review.  He taught constitutional law.  In his
manner and his appearance he is as far from his controversial
background and associates as one could possibly imagine.

But this disjuncture between who he appears to be and who his
background and associations suggest he might be is so profound that it
leads to the most basic of doubts and worries among American voters.

Hillary Clinton always has been the bête-noir to blue collar,
downscale, American men.  But they lined up at the polls to vote for
her, so deep was their fear of who Obama might turn out to be.  Their
inveterate sexism was no match for their racial fears, ignited by the
questions surrounding Obama.

But none of these questions is of Obama’s own making.  In two years of
campaigning, in an environment in which waking moment is filmed and
recorded, he has never uttered a single word to lend credence to those
who imagine him to be an alien figure.  He has been consistently
classy and almost boringly straight as he has campaigned.  The worst
one could say about him is that he is a Hamlet-like intellectual who
is often subject to paralysis by analysis.

To win, Obama must reach down deep and dispel the doubts people hold
about him.  So far, he has avoided inflaming them and taken great care
not to lend them any credibility from his own statements or positions.
Now, he must go further and reassure voters who want to believe him,
but are afraid.

Is America ready for a black president?  Hell yes it is.  Obama’s
triumphs in states where there are virtually no blacks attests to it.
Until Rev. Jeremiah Wright opened his mouth, the candidate was
sweeping white voters.  Even when the black community discovered Obama
and abandoned their historical affection for the Clintons, the white
electorate refused to polarize along racial lines and Obama
consistently won about half of the white vote.  But when Wright spoke,
he send a shiver of fear down the nation’s collective spine and
millions of voters who wanted to back Obama, needed to vote Democrat,
and hated George Bush, abandoned the black candidate out of fear.

To blow away this miasma of doubt will not be easy.  Obama, a private
person who dislikes emotional displays in public, will have to speak
from the heart about what America means to him.  He will have to
embrace our national sense of uniqueness and give voice to what Ronald
Reagan said of us: “You can call it mysticism if you want to, but I
have always believed that there was some divine plan that placed this
great continent between two oceans to be sought out by those who were
possessed of an abiding love of freedom and a special kind of
courage.”  American exceptionalism is deeply rooted in our national
consciousness and it has been so offended by Rev. Wright’s
characterization of the United States as a terrorist nation, a force
of evil in the world, that Obama must assuage that hurt if he wishes
to appease our fears.

While the United States has always worked to keep church separate from
our government, there has always been a kind of civil religion in
America which speaks to our values and mission in the world.  The
president of the United States is the high priest of that religion and
it is up to him to give it voice and apply it to the challenges that
pop up in our path.  Obama must make it clear to his countrymen that
he subscribes to that faith and can pick up his duties as high priest.
He needs to articulate the national narrative

I doubt that this election will be close.  Either Obama or McCain will
probably win it in a landslide, depending on whether or not Obama can
fulfill his existential mission of explaining to the American people
who he really is.

re: Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa and the Alien Agenda

Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa represents a multi-cultural tie-in on an exotic topic.  Namely, the hypothesis of other-worldly beings, having fingers in earthly affairs, over the many millennia so far.  To this he brings the perspective of Western views, including Christianity, brought together with African spiritual traditions and outlooks.

Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa and the Alien Agenda
by Louis Proud
FATE Magazine :: May 2008

In the complex and unpredictable world of ufology, compelling evidence often emerges in the most unexpected places, and from the mouths of the most unexpected people. The South African sangoma (a shaman or healer) and high sanusi (clairvoyant and lore-master) Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa is a case in point. Credo is recognized by many as one of the most distinguished African traditional healers of the 20th century. He is, in fact, the spiritual leader of the sanusis and sangomas of South Africa. He is also an artist and writer of some repute.

Nyamogo brothers

I read your article some time ago about the way that the law firm ,Nyamogo and Nyamogo: Nairobi, had been dealing with their brother-in-law`s property sale in which they appeared not to have been at all fair in their distribution of the money from the sale.

Could you bring me up-to-date on how Mr Osuga has been treated since over his claims against these 2 lawyers. Thank you.

NYANZA BUSTAND-VERY FUNNY

Nyanza bus-stop hawkers You know the hawkers at the old bus stop? It’s been a good 7 years since I went to Kisumu . Anyway… one time I got onto a bus just to get the feel. The last time I used public transportation dates back to High School……

so I parked my car at Arina, took a taxi to the bus stop to mingle with the people. I was behaving like a tourist and the people found me odd. I appreciated small things like the weather, scenery, rech ngege mochiel etc….

I got to the bus stop at 2 PM . I got onto a bus madhi Ugenya. Then the hawker walked in with various goods for sale (bidhaa). He had some “Porocaine” tablets that cured everything…!

He was hanging some panties, kamis, shuka, padlocks etc around his shoulder. On his left arm, he had bras, thongs, batteries and a few capsules. If you asked him the price of an item, he would give you a figure totally outrageous… then he gave you a chance to talk him down. Kshs. 60 could be talked down to Ksh. 5!!  Only newbies were bought at the original price. He walked along the aisle on the bus as he pushed his bidhaa. He then got to a seat where a father and teenage daughter were seated. He had the bra in his right arm..”Askari ya matiti”. He shouted… meaning bra! I laughed mpaka I was nearly thrown out of the bus! The father did not flinch or buy the bra for his daughter. The hawker was not giving up without a fight. He then produced some panties which were the precursors to modern day thongs. He dangled a few silky thongs in front of the young lady … “kifund chiemo”, he shouted… meaning the “padlock to the eatery”

I laughed so loud mpaka I was thrown out.  Fellas, Kisumu hawkers aren’t funnier until you get to Homa-Bay Asego Kanyada Bustand. The world of Hawkers/Manambas meet here I guess Michuki interfered with this rich culture trying to organize it. Everytime I get home sick, I think of matatu cluture! It is a nostalgia and a half. Matatus enroute, Migori, Kisii , Mbita, Kendu-bay, Oyugis, Sori-Karungu some are built like space ship or bullet train. They are kicking and billowing like bulls ready to fight for passengers. They are all colors of paint or anything the painter got his hands on. Back then, Homa-Bay was the busiest place in the world…. if you just got there you would think the Matatu leaving for Mbita almost left you, as soon as you get off the Bus or Nissan from Nairobi … a beaten piece of crap pulls right in front of that Bus, it is breathing and sneezing fire like a dragon ready to go! Manamba shouting and yelling… Mbita, Mbita, Mbita, Mbita… and the idiot behind the wheels is screeching the brakes.. and hooting.. he is not even the driver… the driver is still in Shauri Yako swallowing Achwaka… Chang’aa or is it kumi kumi? You thought it is full, the only space left was for one person and you are like yeah, I just wanna go home, sitaki kuranda randa hapa Hom-bay. And you are like ngoooooja .. mtu ya Mbita..

The moment you say that, you are already bundled into this crap stinking harufu ya samaki.. you are thrown in there on the lap of some mamas munching mandaoz, some peeling machunguas, wazee wana rarwa mahindi choma or aboka ….. and others are talking across the carriage as if they are a mile away from each other about the rain and planting. You are squeezing your neck out of the window to look up the roof to check if your bags are on. Your ( nike bag ) is tucked under the dripping fish basket (osera mar mbuta)….. squashed beyond recognition….. a big puddle of mbuta juice drops on your face sending your head back into the mathree your face folded like a wall Gecko. A while ago you though that thing is leaving….. only one passenger was needed, and now this thingy starts going round and round in circles. A while back you were fooled the people who are inside are real passengers but now you are finding out they are a bunch of bustand idlers. Two hours later you are still in this debe and it is now hot like hell, you want to get out……. that is the time the hawker shows up with all kinds of bidhaa. I saw this guy who would put
Victoria secret to shame…

This jamaa is selling all kinds of thongs and G-strings, bras and tampons … needles, sweets, hankies, safety pins, house of manji, kiberitis, warm sodas and cakes.. he’s got some undies thicker than diapers too….. he is dangling them on the faces of some mamas …..ati antie…. Nunua hii ‘kufuli ya chakula cha wazee.’ He has a rack on his shoulder and everything is hanging on it… he looked at me and pulled out a bottle of capsules… and said eh waziri, nunua hii dawa ya malaria ya mapenzi….

I was still looking at him…. Is he calling me waziri, he was like EH!….

He pulled out a syringe and purukeni… una taka hii….. ama unataka soksi ya rungu (male condoms). He was like O.K wewe sio sleki eh.. haya basi cheki hii ‘shika ni tandike’ (tin lamp)…

I asked him mbona waniita waziri? Akasema…. Waziri wa nyege kilimo ya kitandani anahitaji hizi bidhaa… I wasn’t even talking to him and there goes the guy sticking a Ragol (comb) thro’ my hair and walks away like he is giving it for free…turned around to a mama who had a baby and he opened a Fanta and gave it to the little man… he gave him a big whole piece of cake with it… the kid was smiling and this mama is like sija kwambia umpatie mtoto wangu keki… and the jamaa is like anti wacha mtoi amange keki…

Another, mama asked him what are those cakes made of? Jamaaa is like ‘cake is made of chak, tong’ and sukari and the milimiliness of it causes yieng’o…..”

He turned around to some chics and gave them lady gay and Vaseline….. then he says “hii ya kukufanya mwili yako nyororo badala ya kutembea na pien nge’ch (instead of alligator) then he scratched the back of this Githee. He gave a mzee him a pack of sportsman.. mzee is like bibi yangu hataki nivute sigara… and the jamaa was like hiyo ni kwa sababu wewe na wekanga spotmandi pahali dhako na weka rexonde…………

WEIGHTY MATTERS

Avana va Andimi,

In our days or the norm here is Kenya is if you put some little weight then you ARE said to be doing well. HoweveR, with the health concerns of modern foods and soon, it may not be a good idea to put on so much weight after the 40 years mark.

I have noticed that the PM is putting on a little too much. I guess it has something to do with less travel and more of the desk work. This may not augur well for his health and image. It may not be easy to get an Obama body but at least, kiasi. Kibaki is doing something about his weight too (or was it post election stress?), no wonder he keeps on puling up his pants when he walks.

Image is everything.

WATCH: ‘Refugee in the City’ [Google Videos]

Dear All,

I am forwarding a link to a short film below, created some time ago by me and three colleagues.

This short film examines the correlation between mental health and the experiences of immigrants in their adopted countries.

It uses the case of a Refugee from a fictitional country in the Balkans, the ‘Shimshish Republic’, to demonstrate how factors such as neighbourhood hostility to immigrants, long waiting for resolution of asylum applications, enforced/involuntary poverty, and the sheer solitude of life in a strange foreign country where one is unwanted, all combine to affect mental health within most immigrant communities.

Whilst designed to reflect the experiences of refugees in the United Kingdom, this seems to be a widespread experience within Immigrant / refugee communities all over the world, especially in Western Europe.

The challenge is clearly for the public policy arena, especially agencies responsible for the welfare and settlement of refugees and other immigrants, to design solutions that ensure that those leaving their countries fit and healthy, often escaping life-and-death situations in search of a safe haven, do not end up being subjected to life-threatening conditions akin to, or even worse than, the conditions that forced a fleeing refugee from his or her own country of origin!

In this regard it is hope that ‘Refugee in the City’ goes a long way as a starting point in improving the welfare of immigrants here in the United Kingdom and all over the world. Please email back with any feedback to the undersigned at bob.awuor@yahoo.com
P/S: This film is freely accessible to all via Google Videos.

Regards,

Bob Awuor

Refugee in the City

4 min 6 sec – 11 Aug 2006
Average rating:  (1 rating)

Description: I left Shimshish Republic and in 1999 I came to this City to seek asylum. I had to leave my beloved republic because of the war. I was accused of being a Kamshish’s spy, the neighbouring republic, the country that we are at war with.

I claimed asylum on arrival and with some other refugees, most of them from Hyperborea and Central Priminia, we were dispersed to these council estate blocks at the outskirts of City. I was placed in one of the flats on a remote tower block.

The flat was empty and soulless. There was only bare walls and emptiness. But to my revelation the previous tenant, although had taken everything, has left a computer and surprise-surprise it was connected to the internet.

The neighbourhood was frightening but I decided to wonder around to try and find some friends. God, I was so lonely.

It was a rainy day and I was walking around and this guy appeared from nowhere; I smiled at him and as I was thinking to try and speak  to him, he punched me strait on the face and he said: “Go home you bloody Kamshi”

Kamshi? Kamshishian? I am not Kamshishian! I am a Shimshishian! I went back to my flat, my nose was bleeding badly. It took me some days to recover and after this incident I didn’t dare to go out anymore.

My flat became my prison. But even here I wasn’t left alone. I could here this strange noise on the hall, coming and going. Time after time there was this loud banging on my door followed by a letter coming through my mailbox. Initially I was exited because I thought that there was some news and hope about my asylum claim. But no, the letters were actually articles’ photocopies taken from local newspapers which had these huge titles with hate toward immigrants and asylum seekers.

I just didn’t understand what was going on! I tried in vain to find friends on the internet but I couldn’t. No one wanted to chat to me.

Than I read this article about multiplayer online games, and I thought, God this is a great idea; I had some military experience, so I could use it and on the same time I could get some friends. I played, played, and played day and night; I was only interrupted by this banging on the door. But as the days passed by, I started to care less and less about the banging. I found a new country, new freedom, loads of comrades. I played continually, and although initially my body was aching so much that I could barely straightened it, it didn’t matter. After some time the ache stopped, I couldn’t feel my body any more, but I continued playing, and than one day this huge BANG, this beautiful light came from nowhere, I was lifted and twisted by some invisible force, I fainted.

When I woke up there I was, inside of the game, finally free to roam in my newfound country.

Re: PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (GOOD TO KNOW)

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse.

For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don’t know it exists.

Please pass this along to everyone possible

Hi guys,

Am quite a passive contributor in this forum but this surely caught my eyes because a workmate told me the same stuff 2 weeks ago. after investigating will all the banks we have in Kenya, through my useful banking leads,  it is clear that this cannot work in Kenya. Reason being, the special system/equipment that links banks to the police stations etc have not been installed yet by any bank in Kenya. Due to this technological lag, we can not use the pin reversal to alert the police for rescue.

hope this sheds light on the issue

Dear Wanakazi!

This thing doesn’t work with the Kenyan ATMS not unless there are any that are linked to our police stations which the last time i checked don’t have computers installed and are still working on pieces of paper.

It’s a nice thing but it does not work, i tried it personally on a KCB and Equity ATMS lakini it shows u wrong pin entered.

Perhaps someone in the banking sector can enlighten us more on this

Hi Jacky,

Kindly note that this is just a hoax email…..it cannot work anywhere as it is….some people have 0000 , 1111, 3333, 1001…etc….how do you type these ones backwards?

Have a hoax free afternoon

Hi Amos

I am not sure about this technology, but it will be something good to write home if it is available in our bank here in Kenya. But I totally disagree with Amon coz I dont thing there is anyone with pin numbers that have repetitive numbers as this one would break the computer password rules.

Lets move from speculation world and would like to hear from someone working in the backing sector or someone who has developed banking software.

Cheers guys

Jack, 6336 is a perfect password…. completely nothing wrong with palindrome passwords.

But I like the whole concept of user and the system ‘playing’ a clueless thug… secondly, other than alert the police (who may not come even if you TALK to them), the system should only dispense limited amt on such a password and even give wrong balance!
