KENYANS IN THE USA FORMS A DIASPORA UMBRELLA BODY

Kenyans living in the United States have formed a Diaspora movement called Kenya Global Unity (KGU) that they intend to use to tackle numerous challenges facing them. The organization’s formation comes hot in the heals of multiple murders that have seen dozens of Kenyans killed in domestic violence related incidents across several States in the U.S.A.

Interim officials of the organization say the movement will be used as a think tank and a locomotive to channel several issues affecting Kenyans in the Diaspora and at home. It was registered in the State of New Jersey as a Non Governmental Organization (NGO).

The interim President of the organization is Alex Momanyi (North Carolina) and Julius Ochieng Oluoch (North Carolina) is his deputy. The interim Secretary General is Joseph Lister Nyaringo (New Jersey) and his deputy is Beatrice Ruto (Florida).

The organization will at first try to unite the various (tribal) organizations that operate in various States in the U.S. and other parts of the World to speak in one voice on the numerous challenges affecting them and other Kenyans at home. Kenya Global Unity will be the first Kenyan based Diaspora organization that will bring all Kenyans scattered around the world under one umbrella.

“We are going to advocate for unity of purpose among Kenyans who live outside their home. But we shall also seek to seek for real and practical changes in governance, the realization of social justice, equity , good governance and promotion of democratic ideals,” said Mr. Nyaringo, during the launch for KGU in Las Vegas Nevada last weekend.

The organization will retain three chapters in Europe, one in Canada, three in the US, and two each in Asia, and Africa respectively. The organization shall also operate a homeland office in Nairobi, in order to keep close taps on events taking place at home.

The officials of KGU have appealed to the government to facilitate for the implementation of dual citizenship for Kenyans who lost their citizenship after they acquired foreign citizenship to get new Kenyan passports through its missions abroad and the Ministry of foreign affairs should expedite this process. They also want the government to put logistics in place to enable all Kenyans in the Diaspora to register and vote in the next general elections slated in 2012, since it’s their right to do so.

The officials also demanded that the government of Kenya address the serious cases of enslavement of Kenyan women especially working in Saudi Arabia as domestic servants. Recruiters or employment agencies based in Kenya need to be investigated.

Other officials of the KGU include; Joan Misoi (Finance Secretary), Isaac Newton Kinity, director of operations while Peter Makori is the secretary for international affairs. Dr. Barrack Abonyo is the Spokesperson. In the Middle East KGU is represented by Mohamed Abdi while Philip Ngugi and Julius Menge represent United Kingdom and Sca
