Other Luo Projects-LUO ECONOMIC FORUM

Nyikwa Ramogi,
Mano doko paro maber mar Luo welfare. Aungo u lwedo kabisa. Joluo esecially modak oko, wadwa chako chenro mar investing in Luo land specifically Kisumu, as you all know Kisumu is a ghost town, thanks to massive destruction during post-election violence.

We are currently thinking establishing  a LUO ECONOMIC FORUM. To help foster development of Luo nyanza, we are proposing activities such as investments in Kisumu city, seeking funds for welfare-education, mobile clinics, health center, boreholes, and any rural development activites which will improve lives of Luo folk.

We are Luos in diaspora and we can mobilize funds to develop Luo Nyanza. We in diaspora can also find ways of investing our money not having to go through NSE which is full of Kikuyus (some of whom may be well-meaning, but others who may not).

Joluo, this is the time to wake up, let us redeem ourselves. Join us today. Interested parties please contact me: Gloria Atieno Otieno for more information My address is below.

Ero kamano kwuom chako bura ni, di ber kadi miwa email ma wanyalo oroni proposals ma wan kodo. We should have a convention center opened in Kisumu to target the comesa market. With the convention center comes hotels and related service industries. Secondly we should mobilize and transform Kisumu into a transport and shipping hub. Kisumu has better access to comesa and the markets of southern Sudan and western Ethiopia. Kisumu nyalo take advantage mar railway ma wuok durban ka kalo Mwanza, gi railway ma mombasa. Momorial machal gi ma bomb blast man nairobi. Memorial no onego olose kondele, mondo wachak revitalization mar kondele nyaka mamboleo.
Finally pesa mar CDF kod LATF should be used to set up three entities: Kisumu hospital system, Kisumu school district kod Kisumu visitors bureau. Kisumu hospital system should coordinate the construction of at least three hospitals; one in Mambolea, one in Manyatta and one in Bandani. In addition, five clinics should be constructed in Dunga, Obunga, Migosi Nyalenda, and Kombewa.
Kisumu school district should build modern schools based on the ODM model where the same school design is employed according to population growth. Finally Kisumu visitors bureau should coordinate conferences and attract international bodies to hold conferences in Kisumu. It should also start the Kisumu Benga and Rumba festival to be held once a year, as well as Kisumu jazz festival and Ohangla and festival.
It is quite possible that the Kisumu visitors bureau can be the first step alongside the memorial to get Kisumu back on its feet

    Dear Gloria,

What a wonderful idea long overdue!!! I work for an international organization in Puntland, Somalia and will be there for the next two years. Truly we have to develop Luoland ourselves. Our leaders must be brought on board to read from the same script but there must be a starting point.

I fully subscribe to the Luo Economic Forum as avehicle to bring development in Luo Nyanza in particular and Nyanza in general. We can easily develop into a strong economic bloc to be emulated by others.

Keep us posted on the progress. Wan kodu nyar Nam!!

    Cheers.

    Ambrose.

koro, it’s very exciting to see that Luo Nyanzan’s in the disporia are seriously thinking of not only investing in Nyanza but also setting up a luo economic forum.Though I fully surport this line of thaught I would suggest that we have a totally radical or different mind set in regard to the economic forum, lets consume all our energies in economically empowering our people in rural and urban nyanza, and all those in all major towns in Kenya including our brothers and sisters in the disporia.
Our major focus should be invest, invest and invest,by encouraging our rural folks, by starting small with investments of as little as ksh 2000, to our elite brothers and sisters who are able to invest in thousands or millions, through serious networking among ourselves and linking each other with microfinances and investment clubs which can provide resources.
The only way forward is for us to first economically empower ourselves not only in Nyanza but where ever we are in Kenya (or the world.)
Through serious networking alone, within Kenya and accross the world, we can mobilse resources, get jobs abroad, create investments clubs, channel big time development projects in nyanza that can trigger wealth in luo nyanza.
Lets set the ball rolling and hit the road, I am very much ready, Gloria blow the whistle to all those interested we start this noble idea.

ero kamano kwom miyo wa email i will send some of the proposals and how to pay for them shortly. I would also wish that the leadership fight for the conversion of kisumu polytechnic into the Kisumu University, with schools for law, medicine and engineering as its pillars. Given Kisumu’s location in the region, ways have to be explored to create a commodities exchange index to further boost Kisumu’s visibility.

Nyikwa Nyar nam erokamano uru kuom nyiso the interest. In fact Ayie kabisa gi suggestions mag otieno K. Infact Building a memorial for all those who were affected in the post-elections violence is the most immediate thing we should do.

    For more information on us…

We are a group of Luos very hard working and development oriented. We decided to form an Economic Forum mainly Targeting the Development of Nyanza Province, we cannot wait forever to be in power so that things get done, the time is NOW. It is our time to invest and make our homeland a better place. Luo Economic Forum is currently being changed to read Nyanza Economic Forum in order not to sound too tribal and there are some non-luos who live in Nyanza and would like to join.

In a nutshell, the main aim of the forum is REBUILDING NYANZA
    And in doing so…
    1. To put our heads together as intellectuals – as you know Nyanza Province has the highest number of intellectuals in the country- in this regard we are going to use our human resource capabilities to develop Luo Nyanza , come up with proposals, development models aimed at seeking ways of improving infrastructure, education, health, income and market access for people in Nyanza Province including Rural Development initiatives for Rice, sugar, cotton and fish sectors which are nyanza’s main economic activities. we can start off small as community projects and later expand.. as you know, “haba na haba hujaza kibaba”

    2. Mobilization of funds – for development oriented projects such as building of schools, health centers, boreholes, irrigation schemes etc, as you know there are many Luos in diaspora and together we can mobilize funds from these wazungus, their churches and NGOs would be more than willing to help, and in return also create employment for thousands of highly intelligent Luos who have graduated but dont have jobs because they are not politically correct. A bursary fund for university and secondary school education also to build our human resource reserves.

    3. Investing in Luo Nyanza – many Luos in diaspora have an intense desire to invest back home, many want to buy land, houses, invest in shares etc but the prevailing situation currently favors only one tribe, if you want to buy a house in Nairobi, the prices are over the limit, if you want to buy land in Karen, Ngong or Runda, it is now more than 2 million per quarter acre – it is over inflated, what would be more better than to invest in Nyanza? Kisumu is a very beautiful city and together we can develop it and there are many more areas in Nyanza where we can develop, we can even buy shares of our sugar factories ( we are currently pushing for privatization of some of them) as a group and invest in them, we can revive the cotton ginneries and invest also in terms of shares… there are many more things that we can do together.

    4. Philanthropic activities such as helping the poor help themselves, Aids orphans, homeless people, organizing youth activities such as soccer games, competitions etc to give hope to the youth, youth education and programs for girls who drop out of school etc

This is a rough Idea of what our aim is but I will be circulating a document/package to all who will be interested on the modalities of joining and everything, kindly spread the word to your other friends my alternative email address is otieno@iss.nl. Keep in touch. And for those who have Ideas, please float them, let us make good use of our brains.

  6. Juma Achoki

    Dear Gloria,

Wacho kod timo. Set up a small committee, draw up investment plans, register an organization with clear goals of a share ownership style, publicise and let people start buying shares. Make sure it is registered and above board. Start with the few people that are willing and allow more people to join. Let it cover health, transport, food production and processing, trade, etc. My suggestion is to make it profit driven and have a philanthropic division, just like most major companies.

You will end up employing a lot of people from Nyanza, in addition to providing services and development.

This idea has been discussed for a long time. It is time to make it happen. You will have complete support. Get started!!!

in relation to what bwana Achoki owacho, these investment teams should not have more than 50 people, so that it becomes easy to manage, secondly the more teams we have, the wider the pool to draw from when it comes to getting additional capital for the desired projects. One team can deal with the hospitality business, the other agribusiness and so on. I am glad we are getting mr Okello kaka mayor, hopefully he can get on board,or someone can get with him, mondo wachak projects gi higa ni

    I will post an article that shows how to set up investment vehicles for maximum potential maybe maye nyalo konyo wa ka warango kaka de wachak bishara pacho;

As a commitment, this means you show up at every group meeting and take it seriously; it’s not a social event. We are talking about your future here, which for many of us means retirement money.

07-September-2007: Tony Wainaina, CEO of Transcentury Limited (TCL), was the keynote speaker at the inaugural Kenya Association of Investment Groups talk on: “Why the future of investments is in investment groups. These are excerpts of Tony Wainaina’s presentation.

    On Kenyan investors:
A lot of people wait for share prices to rise and get into the stock market at the top of the market. Then when the share price starts to fall they panic and start selling, losing money in the process only to regret it when the share starts to rise again.

To make money on the stock market buy low and sell high. But many investors buy shares because others are buying without trying to understand the company or its business. This ‘herd mentality’ is because people do not invest for the long term.

At Transcentury one of our core values is never to go for easy investments where you sit back and wait for returns – that’s gambling. We never make an investment unless we can add value.

Where can you get good opportunities for investment?
You don’t have to look far to get good investment opportunities. Look for companies that are undervalued but have potential.

East African Cables marked the start of the most successful part of investing for TCL. Cables are not very exciting but they are used everywhere and will continue to be part of our lives even with wireless technology.

We felt that by revamping the management of the company there was a good opportunity to scale up the profitability of the company. At the end of the day management is everything in a company no matter how small your investment is. EAC was only operating in Kenya and we saw opportunities in the regional market.

At the time the company was only producing aluminium and copper cable and we saw an opportunity to diversify the product portfolio. With a new, young management team we acquired a manufacturing site in Tanzania and opened depots in Uganda and Rwanda.

After the acquisition (TCL owns 75 per cent of EAC) profit after tax has increased 30 times from Sh9.3 million in 2003 to Sh284 million in 2006. Sales have increased five times from Sh428 million to Sh2 billion.

Expand your horizons by looking for investment opportunities outside Kenya. Africa has numerous good opportunities but which are undervalued because foreigners are put off by the problems in the continent such as war and poor infrastructure.

But now is the time for investment groups to get in while these opportunities are still undervalued. TCL has invested in Zambia, Nigeria (indirectly) and South Africa.

    Key drivers of group investment:

Commitment – this means you show up at every group meeting and take it seriously; it’s not a social event. We are talking about your future here which for many of us means retirement money. Trust – Members should not blame each other when the group loses money. It also means integrity and not running off with the group’s money.

Have a well thought out and documented vision. For TCL the vision is Sub-Saharan Africa. Remember that every investment has an element of risk; it’s how you evaluate the risk that counts. For instance Zimbabwe right now seems too risky but it’s not always going to be like this. The upside can be huge.

Governance – Put structures in place and have management that is accountable. Ensure that no one individual is the one calling all the shots and avoid group think. If you have a feeling that something is not right then speak out.

Bring ideas to the group no matter how ridiculous because you never know where it may lead. It is also important to have strong leadership and think long-term.

    Key pitfalls of investment groups:
Procrastination so that the group fails to grow and achieve its goals. Having no goals and vision and poor leadership are the reasons why so many groups disintegrate.

    Success factors:
Look for diversity of skills in the group’s membership. Have entrepreneurs who can see opportunities and are not afraid to take risks. They may not be the most educated but they have “street smarts.”

Also have people with a background in finance to do the numbers and advise you when to get in and out. Members with a legal background can do due diligence and develop shareholder agreements defining the obligations and responsibilities of each member.

Members with public sector experience will be very useful because over 50 per cent of services are provided by the government and eventually you will have to deal with it. You may also get involved with deals involving privatisations.

All members should be like-minded, that is, driven by a common purpose. Separate business from friendship especially as your investments grow. Be committed in your capital contributions. Put it in on the same level as paying rent or school fees.

Formalise and legalise the relationship. Get an auditor, make tax returns, and issue share certificates regularly to show what your shareholding in the company is. Keep records up to date and run your group like a company – have quarterly accounts, record and keep minutes of meetings.

Don’t fear failure. Investment decisions can go either way, it doesn’t matter who you are. With TCL it was the investment in what was formerly Castle Brewing. With a global company it’s easy not to dig as much as you should.

But we were not expecting East African Breweries to put up such a huge challenge that within a few years Castle had closed shop and left. It was a sobering experience and we were lucky not to come out with losses.

You also have to know when to get out and have an exit mechanism before you invest so that you don’t get stuck.

Borrow Leveraging the capital you have accumulated is really the only way to develop scale and size like what TCL did with East Africa Cables. Banks in Kenya need to wake up in this area because there are opportunities. Think big, defy convention, step outside your comfort zone but do it sensibly.

    Gloria,

We uru a suggest approach ma is slightly different from donating money and handing it out as outlined in a previous posting. Wangeyo ni k’utimo mano to onge gima ukonyo go except creating a “welfare” type situation. where there will be dependency.

Instead, why do we not search for more vigorous investments in Nyanza that will be self supporting in the future to generate income that can be put back into the project.

This can be instituted in one of several ways:

    I. As suggested above, get about 100,000 people who are willing to stand up and be counted to contribute $ 100.00 or equivalent each. This will be a one time contribution that nets you a fixed sum as suggested elsewhere. How that money is used ceases to be the contributor’s problem when the money is gone from their hand.

II. Register 50,000 people who are willing to invest $ 100.00 quarterly over the next 2-3 years as near term “capital funding” on a share basis.

ID some small capital projects that will be income generating to invest the said monies on, or use the funds as collateral in a partnership with bigger institutions who will provide additional funding as loans etc to be applied towards the projects. The ID’d projects must, upon completion, be income generating as the initial funding source is projected to dry out after 2-3 years. Once the projects become stable, reinvest the income generated by the projects back in Nyanza and build up a “people’s enterprise” that is long term and self sustaining.

    Manage the projects wisely!

Of course, the idea can be spread out by playing with numbers and with several combinations, I am sure an optimum number of people and an optimum contributory amount can be arrived at so as to incorporate as many people as possible. Itakuwa chama cha wanainchi then where everyone willing can invest a little bit and eventually realise some return on investment.

I will be willing to join any discussions on the agenda proposed, and can be reached at jagem@swbell.net Please use the subject Nyanza or other such descriptive subject as I tend to mass delete e-mails whose senders I do not know, or whose subjects do not jig my memory.

    Gloria,

Thank you for the noble idea. I work as a driver and i have started investing in nairobi. I am planning to buy another plot in kisumu so that i can start contributing to the development of the area.Imagine if you most of us did that, where do you think kisumu city would be now. ACTION SPEAKS LOUDER THAN WORDS.

I am ready to join the club at anytime. My simple ideas might just do some magice.

  14. Auma Hayo

Thank you for this great thinking ,i feel so challenged as i read all these brilliant suggestions.Though in my heart i keep on asking myself what about the majority of the nyanza youth who are just too broke to talk about investing,or the majority who though very bright could not afford college education and are now doing the business of boda boda(the bike in most cases do not even belong to them) or selling at kibuye(in most cases the business is not their own).
As nyanza youth we are not looking for handouts or sympathy but we are asking to be given a chance by empowering us.
Stop taking all your resources to nairobi,by doing that you are denying me a chance to progress,i work for an asian who believes that it is his destiny for him to own all the wealth and mine to work for him for minimal pay.And you know what, this makes me sick to the stomach and the sad part is that we the youth who form the majority in nyanza suffer from the problem.
We dont want to be brainwashed into thinking that good things only come from whites or asians or even nairobi. And the only way to do that is by concentrating your resources to nyanza and you will realise that we the youth of nyanza are not backward,or shallow or stone throwers as we may be potrayed.
We only lack someone to listen to us and give a chance

Mokwongo amosi ni misawa and congratulations for such a fantastic suggestion.
To the others, while I highly support what Gloria is suggesting but we must also ensure that such a forum is devoid of corruption loopholes that has made the vast part of luoland (and Kenya by large) to stagnate economically. Nyaka we insure and ensure that only people whose management skills have been tried and tested are allowed to be at the helm of the forum. Otherwise I’m afraid that this might turn into another money milking venture which is doomed to fail even before it starts.

  24. Johnson ANYUMBA

Thanks so much Mrs. Atieno Otieno for such a bold idea. This brings out something though belated but of great significance as an idea. Good ideas and reactions only come out when there are needs after hardships or difficult situations.
HOW CAN WE ALL CONTRIBUTE TO DEVELOPMENT IN NYANZA
The undersigned has keenly read on proposals from all quarters and ours is that we Nyanzian must give our contributions not ONLY those that can afford by offering money alone. Yes, money is good for its mobility but it involves few that can afford especially those in the Diaspora and some within Kenya, but how about the majority that work in Kenya and/or better in Nyanza? Then, there is the issue of who will manage those funds, it will need a committee and then there is the question of how can those funds be utilized for the development than channeling into sustaining the offices and office bearers? Apart from that there is need for highest transparency in handling the funds. …………
We recall the ideas placed by our leaders then, when Luo Union East Africa was founded with very good intentions and motives. What was/ is the outcome that we can benefit of those initiatives today? What and why did it collapse? However, that is not a good reason enough to retreat on the idea placed by Mrs Otieno.
WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO TO MAKE HEADWAYS AS TO THIS MAGNIFICIENT IDEA AT HAND
Basically we all need to unite and make a strong one voice to work we want Nyanza to be. This means that we have to involve everybody in my opinion we MUST REQUEST ALL OF US (Nyanzian) TO MAKE ANY KIND OF CONTRIBUTION REGARDLESS TO FACILITATE FASTER DEVELOPMENT in Nyanza.
WHAT KIND OF CONTRIBUTIONS DO WE NEED
    1) The idea of making financial contribution of about $100 or so per member is highly supported especially for those in the Diaspora. This then demands managing committee of how to deploy the funds in Nyanza. In my opinion a committee to handle the funds must be volunteers of highest integrity. This may be a nightmare as economic and social situation stands at the moment in the country.
    2) To find contributions from local politicians that handles Community Development Funds (CDF). Yearly government disburses funds through constituencies; these funds are in the hands of committees under the chairmanship of a political leader thus the MP. We suggest that politicians MUST support and play a patriotic role to see that these funds are well handled than what it is at the moment. And one way is to cut down on brokers, handouts and give contracts to our local indigenous companies who have credibility and professionalism in their respective activities.
    3) Private companies and firms that participate in activities like road, bridge, housing construction, borehole drilling, health provision etc, should increase participation in local development activities by offering a very affordable project costs (at times they should give promotional offers) just to facilitate the local development in Nyanza. Here too is where funds from the Diaspora could be best utilized (if there are available).
    4) Professional bodies/institutions, private elites including local Ngos must at least be patriotic enough not only to disseminate knowledge and awareness to few urban communities but increase engagement in rural areas. Here too funds should come from CDF/Private companies as volunteers, from the Diaspora and influential local political leaders.
    5) Local leaders/ Ngos, private companies should hold public annual appreciation day where institutions/ Ngos, committees companies are gathered and publicly acknowledged for their participation in development activities in the local development. Such To appreciations will encourage development within Nyanza.
    6) To encourage independence and self sustainability among youth and women, we need to open all channels of finding employment. And one way among others is requesting banks and financial institutions to increase facilitation of individuals to start up small activities. This is a contribution that can come from our leaders already working in financial institutions, micro- financing Ngos,
    7) More so centers of higher learning should encourage students to form their own groups as they graduate not only to look for employment in the government but start their own benefitting from available loans from the local financial institutions.
As a professional Nyanzian in water sector, our company will be honoured to continue working in Nyanza. And on the strength of M/s Atieno Otieno’s idea, we place it to you that if you approach us, we shall oblige to offer safe water provision to our communities at a half market rate especially to schools, health centres, markets. In areas where communities are poorest we request that through the Diaspora funds (if it will be there), we shall oblige to offer safe water provision with the same understanding.
The writer retains that to make a difference there MUST be a win win situation in this endeavor. Please our encouragement is focused on all stake holders. And thanks so much to Mrs Atieno Otieno for the idea and your initiative. Keep up and contact us.
