World: Global poverty estimates: Present and future

Global poverty monitoring has been brought to the forefront of the international policy arena with the introduction of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The first MDG proposes the elimination of severe poverty globally, and has been formulated as the goal of ‘halving the proportion of people with an income level below $1/day between 1990 and 2015’. The adoption of the MDGs has led to renewed interest in estimating poverty at the national, regional and global level. Nevertheless, the estimation of poverty at the global level is made difficult by data limitations and methodological challenges.
