The New York City, State and Federal governments will be hosting an Africa Day Reception to commemorate the Africa Day Annual Celebration on May 24th, 2011 from 12Pm to 6PM. This is a unique reception and of a rare kind, since it marks the first time the State would be commemorating this event since the initial inception of the African Union, formerly Organization of African Unity, in 1961.
The African Union recognizes the importance of the African Diaspora furthering the development of the continent. High on the agenda of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council (ECOSOCC) is to forge strong partnerships between governments and all segments of the civil society, in particular women, the youth, children, the Diaspora, organized labor, the private sector and professional groups on issues concerning Africa and its future.
To this effort, the Honorable NY State Assemblyman Jefferies Hakeem has shown substantial leadership, with the help of African Union Day Foundation a community organization committed to celebrating Africa’s heritage to organize this reception in Albany. The event features a panel of renowned academicians from New York University, Fordham University, representatives from African Union Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations, and the legislators from Albany. The event will be moderated by Mr. Spencer Chiimbwe, the Coordinator of the Africa Union Day Foundation.
All members of the public are invited to attend the Africa Day reception in Albany on May 24th, 2011. Please note that transportation to and from Albany will being arranged by Office of the Assembly man: To RSVP, please contact Tobi Jaiyesimi at tobijaiy@gmail.com or 718-596-0100.
