Hi , Franklyn.
I agree with you, knowing yourself is not easy, actually is a process, it a journey of self discovery. You can sit for one day, analyze yourself and then say you know yourself. It can take even a whole year. It also involves asking other people what they think of you, getting feedback and trying to synthesize and digest it honestly and objectively. It means reflecting on past incidents and how you reacted to them and trying to find WHY you reacted that way?
This is where you got it wrong: When I said knowing yourself, I did not mean relying on your own knowledge or analysis only, but also factoring what other people know about you. It’s true as you said it. Other people know so much about you that you don’t know yet it’s true. You got to find out what it is that they know in that process of trying to know and understand yourself.
In my opinion, it’s more rewarding to try to know yourself before trying to understand the other. It’s very difficult to know something very well. You can find couples married for 20 years and still say they don’t understand one another. But if you know yourself you can for example
1. Know what is bothering you instead of feeling bad without knowing why?
2. You cannot feel lost because you know where you belong or fit
3. Understanding yourself will also make you see the whole of yourself not parts. E.g. If you fail in one thing, you are bound to feel a loser, but if you know yourself then will quickly realize that is only a very small part of you.
4. If you understand yourself then you are more likely to understand other people, why they react in a certain way and of course when they say something about you can be able to cross check with what you *know about yourself.*
* *5. You can certainly know what you want with life and yourself. What is right for you and not and help you not make costly mistakes.
Its always my belief that knowing yourself is one of the biggest gift you can give yourself and its worth every effort you can put in it. But have to do it very honestly, objectively and without bias or prejudice, and THAT IS THE DIFFICULT PART OF THE WHOLE PROCESS.
My 2 Cents
