William you’ve said it well. Hooliganism MUST be condemned with the strongest terms possible whether it’s happening in Kisumu, Mandela, Eldoret, Nairobi or Mombasa. However, it’s appalling to always link Raila Odinga
to any hooliganism exhibited in Nyanza. I beg many of our friends to remember that Raila want to be the President of Kenya and it will be very illogical for him to plan or encourage attacks against other other Presidential candidates in Luoland or Langata constituency which he represents as MP. Let’s respect leaders and take criminals as criminals who must be dealt with according to the laws of the land. These are my thoughts. Lister Nyaringo.

Nothing happens in Nyanza without direct linkage with Raila even where that is not warranted. Indeed as Oduor Ong’wen points out, when the same Raila was barred from eating in an hotel in Karatina the other time, nobody talked about Kibaki’s backyard or appealed to Kibaki to restrain his supporters. I think it is important for us to isolate issues and deal with them, be it hooliganism or whatever else, without seeking to bring in names of people, Raila or anybody else.

Without doubt, many people have questioned Tuju’s motive in his declaration of running for the top seat. He could be well meaning and he should go on and provide the colour and such side shows as are emerging.

He knows the Kondele crowd and the fact that they do not need any prompting from anybody. Did he have to go to Kondele? why not Milimani, Tom Mboya estate, Obunga, Nyalenda or even Kibos. Probably as they say, charity begins from home and Tuju should have gone to Rarieda to launch his presidential campaign from home as well.

He knew what he would get into by going to Kondele. He needed the publicity and he knew Kondele would provide it, either prompted from other quarters or self organized. He also knew the attendant support for him and condemnation of the incident would predictably come from, basically the usual quarters, using the same lines of arguments are evident.

Tuju is a communications/media person and he knows how to get publicity after some of his tours elsewhere went virtually unreported in the media.

Go on Tuju, provide the flavour in the presidential race, burn any monies you may have as this is your right. But you are certainly aware of the odds and that your candidature is just, as many people believe, serving a particular purpose. There are certain to be many such incidents in future, not just for Tuju and not just in Kisumu. Such scenes have been seen in many parts of the country.

There is a sense in which the Kisumu town people are beginning to get tired of being portrayed as more violent than other Kenyans. Media feasting on incidents in Kisumu, sometimes, even insignificant, has become irritating to the residents and you get it if you care to discuss with them.

And the media must begin to change this perception which they have built over the years. Local journalists must also begin to appreciate the sensitivities of the people they live among and not stretch some ofthe reporting too far when they know that Nairobi based editors have built enduring perceptions about Kisumu and will harp on small incidents to continue this negative portrayal of Kisumu city and its people. Alot has changed over the years.

Civility and high standards cannot be demanded of only some people while others go without being admonished at all, or the zeal with which their cases are debated or reacted to lessens considerably.

It is still difficult to believe that Oduor Ongwen and Charles Oyaya are making the kind of statements they are making here. Is this our Oduor Ongwen? Or there is a confusion of names like the Onyango Oloo KANU and our Onyango Oloo. Is this our Ongwen?

I still condemn the stoning whether organized by Tuju himself or any other person. But good people, how does Raila’s name make its grand entry here. His backyard? The last time I checked he was representing Karen, Lang’ata, Kibera, Nairobi South C etc. When did he inherit Kisumu Town constituencies from Olago Aluoch and Shakeel Shabir? Why didn’t we identify those Kirinyaga hecklers as coming from Kibaki’s backyard and asked him to rein them in (yet Kirinyaga and Othaya are in the same[former] province as opposed to Lang’ata and Kisumu)?.

At this rate, national integration will remain a pipe dream.

I wish we could name the crime [which is hooliganism] and deal with it

Jex,

Please read what I’ve been saying. Tuju paid the youths to stone him so his campaign could get some publicity. Luos have no interest in Tuju and will not waste their valuable time stoning him.

Oyaya, Oduor and others,

We should not be condoning violence just because it happened to Martha or Wetangula etc, I believe in remaining different i like taking a different route from those violent ones.

Tuju is a luo and will remain so. All we are saying is Hon Raila is an undisputed freedom fighter and must not allow such acts to happen in his back yard. there is nothing wrong with another Luo expressing his wish to lead this nation. Ledearship is Gopd granted and you can never force it on the people and even if you do, it will come with much pain and you may never enjoy it.

Bottom line is, Tuju has his rights protected by the Constitution which again by design or default took the Courage of Hon, Raila to see it come.

Jexx in the hood.

Good people when did the stoning of Tuju stop being a political one to become a case of Luo primitivity. I believe Tuju went to Kisumu as a politician and violence in our Kenyan political environment wherever you are is always a risk. Based on his past relationship with those violently primitive people did he take any necessary precautions to mitigate the risk? Did he ask for adequate security arrangement in advance of his tour in a place he is still held responsible for the death of many youth during the 2005 referendum campaign? Given his political connection, did he ask for security intelligence report? Since his stoning was a criminial act, must the police be reminded carry out their duty? Was he out to up his political campaign by acting provocatively? Was he out to tell these angry people some of whom are still mourning to date, I am here uta do? Has in anyway over the last six years shown remorse and apologized for the killings that took place in his name? Because we suffer from selective amnesia, many of us have forgotten that until recently, Tuju was the President’s Advisor on ethnic relations and if it is the Luos that stoned him, then he must have failed miserably in his job. One therefore wonders if he spent our hard earned taxes for almost 4 years just telling the President how bad his people are, how ashamed he is for being one of them and devising strategies for bastardizing and “finishing” them.

Well for Raila bashers, this is another opportunity for political campaign to show how incapable he is to be a Kenyan Leader becasue his “people” are primitively violent. For Luo haters and apologists, this a a fertile ground to show case their primitivity and intolerance and another excuse to kill them.

We have even forgotten that just not long ago Wetangula and Wamalwa supporters fought. Martha Karua was stoned in her own constituency about two three months ago by supposedly Uhuru supporters. Why is the Kondele case so special? Just call the devil by its true name and it will be exorcised. Tuju and all political aspirants face the same risk and they must face those risks head own. It is not for cry babies and cowards.

It was the most primitive, backward and undemocratic tendencies only still existing in Kisumu. The police should have already arrested those individuals who were captured on TV to send a clear warning that Kenya will not allow such backwardness to continue. My understanding is that Mr Tuju is not seeking to become the president of Luoland. Why would the poor people in Kisumu stop a national presidential candidate from selling his ideas? Why are these goons giving the Luos this bad image? Are we such intolerant characters who cannot withstand opposing views? I think, it’s our duty as professionals of Nyanza to totally condemn such acts because they portray our people as those who falsely claim reformists credential yet we don’t subscribe to the same doctrines. As I talk, I have discussed this matter with so many Kenyans across Kenya, Europe and America; all of them concur that we cannot go on with this outdated politics anymore in Nyanza. We cannot afford to be depicted as the most politically primitive in Kenya yet we have been at the forefront of reforms in this country. You will agree with me that most Kenyans communities have embraced pluralism – the Kisii, which is next door, are electing people based on individual performance (not party); in Central province, we have several candidates seeking the presidency and we have never heard of any of them being stoned or harassed; the Luhyas, our next neighbor, have several candidates running for president and they are always getting attentive audience without harassed; even the Kambas have their own candidates who normally get well received. The politics of stoning candidates is not taking us anywhere. It’s upon the professionals in Nyanza, and the opinion leaders to condemn and disassociate with such people who oppose divergent views. Nyanza is today lagging behind in almost everything. We need to ask hard questions and put those who are leading to task to explain the major achievements they have made for the people of Nyanza. After I really got ashamed after watching what happened in Kisumu. The police should arrest those individuals and make them to account! You can’t just destroy people’s cars like that and get away with it!
