Gerald was one of many supervisors that I have had at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and he was one of the best supervisors I had at CDC. I will never forget our conversations and his beautiful smile. Rest in peace Dr Mumma, I like so many others will miss you. S Skellie Lawrenceville GA USA

The death of Dr. Gerald Mumma comes as shocking news. I remember him as a PhD student in Agricultural Economics at Mississippi State University. where I was a member of the faculty at the time. Gerald was a very intelligent student and a hard worker. What I remember most was his boundless enthusiasm and energy. He was a handsome man, with a big smile and a cheerful voice. I know he was excited about his work at CDC, but I lost track of him when he returned to Kenya. Kenya needs leaders and teachers with Dr. Mumma’s education, skills and values, making his death at such a young age all the more tragic. He will be remembered as a man of considerable achievement and great promise. My sympatiies and condolences go out to his family, and especially to his wife, Jane, and daughter, Heri, to whom the memory of her father should be a great inspiration for her own life.

I knew Gerald from our time together as students of Alabama A & M University in the late 1980s. So sad. Rest in Peace Gerald.

It is with great sadness that I learn the passing of our colleague and friend Mumma, as we used to call him during our studies in Mississippi State. I pray for our Creator to embrace him the same way as he did during his passing through this Earth. RIP.

The news of Dr. Mumma’s death has shocked me. I knew him in the early 80’s when we were students at Kenya Science Teachers College, Nairobi. It is sad that he died at a time he decided to be home and help build our nation.
May his soul rest in peace.

  6. TERESA BACHIA-MUREITHI

Gerry was always so full of life, he played soccer and cheered everyone up at Kenya Science Teachers College in the early 80’s. Very sad that he left at the prime of his life but God knows best. Condolences to his widow and greater family.

I am deeply shocked to learn of the sudden death of Dr. Gerald Akumu Mumma. It is real sorrow for me and I stand with the family, especially Jaduong’ Augustine Mumma and mama Emma Mumma, for the loss together with his widow Jane and daughter Heri.

Jerry was an inspiration to me and as he died, we were about to touch base and change many things he felt were not right.

    I really really liked him.
It is a real loss to me, the family and Kenya.
    Rest In Peace

Extremely sad to read that Gerald passed on in 2009. I only learnt about this when I was searching on the internet for old friend. You see, Gerry was a great friend of mine, but always a year ahead in every learning institutions we attended together. At Kericho High School (in 1982) he was my football team captain – a good one (with his brother as coach). We again met at Kenya Science Teachers’ College (KSTC) where we played football and handball, and was again my football team captain. We shared a residential hall and his room exactly opposite mine (at the extreme end on the third floor). Ondiek R.I.P.

The death of such a brilliant man as Gerald saddens me deeply! I hope my classmate Anne Mumma and my English teacher Connie Mumma found strength to forge ahead after such a painful loss. I remember the great Opiyo Mumma and his travelling theatre, he inspires similar work that I do in UK schools. You all live on in every aspect of our lives that you touched!

My heartfelt condolences to Mzee Augustine Mumma. Odongo my friend colleague and a member of my church. It’s so very sad to lose such an asset.Gerry we shared Kericho high school though we attended at different times. To Mzee and Mama Emma you two are staunch Catholics and no matter what happens you must remain standing and believe that Gerry has gone to be with the lord.

I still feel that Gerry is somewhere with us. A strong man, an Intellectual, A soccer player / Coach. A big Inspiration to many people. He was always FULL of Energy. ” Magwanje” thats what his students used to call him…playing soccer & teaching Physics! We love you Gerry, you showed as that nothing is impossible with Discipline, Dedication & Determination. Death is so so cruel, how could you just leave us when you were just back here in Kenya to show us the way? RIP Mwalimu.
