LEGIO Maria of Africa is facing a lean time. The Church which is believed to have close to 3 million followers scattered all over East Africa could integrate if its leadership power struggle is not resolved soon.
Founded in Siaya by one woman Gaudencia Aoko in the late 1950 Legion Maria took the Luo-Nyanza by storm in the 1960s as it was seen as an indigenous church, and thousands of followers of Roman Catholic Church defected to it..
But its founder Aoko was later overthrown by the younger and aggressive Pope Melkio Ondeto in whose leadership he church grew from an obscure to a powerful church, which attracted mass following, mainly inside Luo Nyanza. It later spread its wing to all parts of the Eastern Africa regions.
Just a few weeks ago ,Got Kwer, which is the church headquarter situated on the hill-top was turned into the bloody battle ground between supporters of the current Pope Romanus Ong’ombe and another pope Raphael Adika.
Pope Adika who it is being alleged to have lost the battle for the supreme leadership of the church had tried to regain his leadership position, while supporters of the current Pope Romanus Ong’ombe are insisting that Adika’s removal was final and irreversible
The close to three days of intermittent fracases, during which score of people sustained bodily injuries only stopped after the intervention of the Police in Migori, who to custody a number of the combatants.
Lso involved in the battle for the control lf the church Pope Wilson Owino Obimbo who was himself ousted a couple of years ago by Pope Adika..
Bu the ugly face of the power struggle resurfaced two weeks ago during Harambee fund drive, which was presided by the Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga..The ODM leader tried in vain to reconcile the warring groups, and even at one time paraded the three Pope before the mammoth of enthusiastic crowd, but his efforts failed miserably as both Raphael Adika and his successor Romanus Ong’ombe stood their grounds.
Supporters of the two factions maintained that what is at stake cannot be resolved on a political platform, but through dialogue and proper consultation.
When Raila called the three to come forward before the crowd and reconcile, it was Wilson Owino Obimbo who bitterly addressed the crowd and said that he had invested a lot of his personal resources in developing Legio Maria Church and therefore cannot sit aside and watch somebody else controlling it.
On hjs part Adika also, said that what is at stake need more time and consultations to be resolved..
Legion aria Church gained its fame inside Luo-Nyanza because it was perceived to be the church which is supported by the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Jaramogi frequently hosted its leader Pope Melkio Ondero in his Kang’o Ka-Jaramogi Nyamira home in Sakwa Bondo.
The late Jaramogi who was a follower of the CMS and later Anglican Church was baptized as Adonija Obadiah Ogiunga Odinga, But during e later part of his life, he switched to Legio Maria and unconfirm reports filtering out suggested that he might have been re-baptized as Gabriel Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and that Pope Ondeto personally officiated in the baptism exercise, though the date and place is not known.
Soon immediately after his release from detention camp, there was a big congregation and vigil prayers conducted by pope Mesiah Melkio Ondeto at the Jaramogi Bondo home, which was attended by thousands of people who fisted on over ten fat bulls and dozens of goats and sheep and other Luo traditional dishes.
This writer acted as the official photographer, hired specifically by Jaramogi to .take pictures of the events.
Rumors making the round is that Raila is supporting one factions hence the source of conflict and power struggles. It is also believed that the seemingly endless power struggle is over the Church’s resources.
However, after the death of Mesiah Melkio Ondeto a couple of years ago, the church has been embroiled in intensive power struggle and numerous legal tussles in courts over its leadership..At one time there was the Pope Hitler Chiaji.

I have been in this church for 27yrs and from what I saw, learned and practiced what you are saying is completely out of order, so please just be a man of God which you are, teach people the word of, but don’t try to make other people publicly look devil worshipers without any proof.
I’ve watched devil worshipers worship but you know it’s very different from legio Maria. It’s true Mathew 24 talks about false witnesses and their miracles, but there’s no false witness or a devil worshipper will perform a miracle of opening the heaven, not even the prophets, but Ondeto did it.

Legio these days is not the way it was a long time ago.The guys in nairobi just want money.I had just seen a legio prayer guy today and by the way he is respected in the church and the guy tells me before he prays for me for a particular problem i am having, i have to pay him 5200.Imagine the 200 is used for one candle.
The guy had powers but i am beginning to sense that these powers are not from God but are from majini or something.I got suspicious when the asked for 5k for a 10 minute prayer.

As a born again Christian this is my take on Legio Maria: Before making any judgment of any church judge on your own self. As it stands now, there is no religion world over that can claim Superior over the others. Some of the commentators point fingers at Legio Maria church that they worship the devil. Yet I have evidence of the Gospel Churches that use majini from Nigeria to give them powers of healing. Have they forgotten the Fiery Pastor Njoroge and the Nduta saga. The pastor made Nduta to keep her mouth twisted for 12hrs later to claim a miracle has been performed. Leave a lone dating her. These kind of evils are common in most churches today. Looking at this post, it is sad that people can twist the truth about Legio Maria to suit their own purposes. Let me make a few observations on the post:
a. the post claims the founder of Legio Maria was Gaudencia Aoko: Such a misrepresentation of facts is unnecessary. The founder of Legio Maria was Simeo Ondeto and the mystic woman, Mama Maria.
b. Legio Maria did not gain fame because of perceived association with Jaramogi: this is completely untrue. While Simeo Ondeto had close ties with jaramogi, it was jaramogi who sought his help and not the contrary. Moreover, each person joined Legio Maria because of his own reasons. Some were healed, some had spiritual problems etc.
c. i am surprised to see some people claiming to be former Legio Marias and yet misrepresenting legio so much. I was born a Legio Maria and has been a member for decades without seeing some of the things some people have said. calling Legio Maria names cannot change anything. It will only serve to boost its popularity.
d. Some pastors on this forum have been very quick to mention Jesus Christ as God. Do they forget that Jesus was a man? Do they forget that Jesus died? Do they forget that the ressurection of Jesus is still debated till today? I think some Africans just hate themselves and think that by calling Jesus God and Ondeto a devil they are improving their portfolio or sympathies with God. But this kind of name calling has no place in religion. Christianity is only around 2 billion people worldwide today. where are the rest of the people going/ If they are going to hell, then majority of humanity will be lost and God will be a failure in his salvation project. Why would Jesus claim to have saved the world and yet more than a half of the population of the world reject him to date? my point is this: christianity is simply a system of beliefs. Nobody can prove it is the right system. not even the so-called pastors. So let these pastors stop parading their intolerance by calling anyone living another faith as belonging to the devil. besides, even this Jesus they are shouting loud about today was called a devil worshipper, a man using the power of the devil.
e. I will not mince my words here. Simeo Ondeto was not a pope. The first Legio Maria pope was Timotheo Atila. Ondeto was recognized as God by early 1959. His charisma and teachings caused his ban from Catholic Church. He gave his followers the Holy Spirit and they had immense spiritual power. It is this power that many people sought in Legio Maria, including Oginga Odinga and his family.
f. Simeo ondeto was worshipped as God while he was still alive. Anyone trying to say he was just a leader is running away from the point.
g. well, some christians claim Ondeto did not ressurrect and so cannot be God. This too is a false claim. Ondeto never taught about the ressurectioon of the flesh. He taught about the survival of the soul. His soul survive death and kept communicating with Legios even when he was dead physically.
But who says that to be God you must ressurect? ressurection is no standard at all for God. In fact, the christians who believe that Jesus ressurected should say Jesus was not God. If Jesus ressurrected then it means he died, body, soul, and spirit. Such a complete death is not possible for God. God cannot die and if Jesus died completely for 3 days then he cannot be God. As for Ondeto, he kept talking to his followers through spiritual possession during the time he was called dead. He has continued to do so even today.
h. Finally, pastors should not act with ignorance. I know they are looking for tithes and they need to attract as many people as possible in their churches who can pay tithes. This is why they call everything that is not of their small churches as evil. How can a pastor of a few hundred people call the God of over 3.5 million people as a devil. Believe what you want to believe. even Jesus is not believed in israel to date. So, Ondeto must not convince all of you that he is God. But certainly if Jesus, a man who died on the cross as a thief is God, then Ondeto must be God.
ACTS 8:9-11 “ But there was a certain man called Simon,who previously practised sorcery in the city and astonished the people of samaria,claiming that he was someone great to whom they all gave heed from the least to the greatest saying;this man is the great power of God.And they heeded him because he had astonished them with his sorceries for a long time”
Samaria was a city not very far from Jerusalem city.The bible says that in this city there was a sorcerer named Simon who was highly respected because of his miracles and people praised him saying he has the power of God!Samaritans were ignorant and could not dircern the difrence between the power of God and sorcery which is the power from dead spirits!The bible reveals that this deception happened for a long time,until Philip the desciple of Jesus went to that city and preached the true gospel of Jesus and people got saved including that sorcerer!
A wise man said,a lie can travel half the whole world while the truth is still putting her shoes.For over a period of 50 years people in Legionmaria believed in another sorcerer named simeo ondeto who perfomed miracles with spirits of the dead.The bible says do not believe any spirit but,test the spirits if they are of God or not.

The bible says in Isaiah8:19-20 And when they say to you,“ seek those who have familiar spirits and wizards,who whisper and mutter,should not a people seek their God?Why seek the dead on behalf of the living?there is no light in them thats why they dont speak the word of GOD”
God condems these practises in legionmaria such as cheking,letter interpretation,divination,loko dhoch,misa marateng, in the bible by saying in Deutronomy 18;9-14 “ thou shall not learn to do abominations that other nations practise,there shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son pass through fire,uses divination,fortune teller,enchanter,consulter of familiar spirits or a necromancer”
Some of this issues are deep,but VERY SOON WE ARE COMING TO PREACH THE REAL JESUS CHRIST AND PROCLAIM HIS NAME AS THE ONLY SAVIOR OF THE WORLD WITH EVIDENCE OF SIGNS AND WONDERS.

Pastor Odhiambo, I will comment with tremendous respect to you. I know you are a staunch Christian and you use the bible a lot. I am also called Deacon Tobias Oloo and I am a staunch Legio Maria. Let me now turn to Christianity for a minute and expose the myths that you believe.
MYTHS OF CHRISTIANITY
1. THAT A MAN CALLED JESUS WAS BORN BY A VIRGIN. This is nonsense. Virgins can never and will never give birth especially to sons. Union must take place between ovum and sperm so that an embryo results. Children of spirit are a nonsensical myth. Spirits cannot produce human sperm and give the same number of chromosomes needed for a complete human being. Similarly, a woman cannot give birth to a male child without a man because the Y-chromosome must come from a man.
2. THE INFIDELITY/UNFAITHFULNESS OF MARY: Mary was already betrothed to Joseph as a wife. God could have not made intercourse with such a woman knowing that that would have been against his own law. Why did that God not choose another virgin whose bride pride price was not yet paid? SO CHRISTIANITY IS FOUNDED ON THE SIN OF UNFAITHFULNESS of Mary.
3. At Jesus birth, SORCERERS AND MAGIS SAW THE STAR OF HIS BIRTH and visited him. What sort of a god was he if his birth was seen by people practicing Magic? Was he one of them? How can Jesus rightly condemn sorcery when at birth Magis and sorcerers came to bewitch him with their gifts?
4. According to the Gospel of John, JESUS WAS NOT BELIEVED BY HIS BROTHERS. HE WAS NOT ACCEPTED BY HIS PEOPLE. This simply means he had nothing special worth belief by others. If he was God his family members would have been the first to notice his godly qualities. SINCE THEY DID NOT, HE WAS JUST A MAN.
5. SUPPOSED MIRACLES. Pastor Odhiambo is quick to talk about how Legio Maria prayers are conducted. Well, that is our style. But turn to the god-man miracles. DID HE NOT SMEAR MUD FULL OF SALIVA ON THE FACE OF A BLIND MAN? DID HE NOT DROWN A WHOLE HEARD OF PIGS JUST TO EXORCISE A FEW DEMONS HE CLAIMS TO HAVE POWER OVER? DID HE NOT MAKE ALCOHOL? Pastor Odhiambo, are these supposed to be the acts of a holy god?

Before I continue,Deacon Tobias-Sir,I was born in Legiomaria,my father was a priest in legionmaria zaituni Barding before he passed away,my mum was in Legionmaria for 32 years until Last year that she become born again after receiving the truth of salvation of Jesus Christ.

I have serve ondeto for 18years and served Jesus for 9years but I can testify a great difference.I strugled with God refusing the assignment to talk to legiomaria about the deception in the cult but God insisted so I had to submit.
If I talk about legiomaria,it is what I saw,I drunk,I tasted,I experienced not what I heard.

1.VIRGIN BIRTH IS NONESENCE!-When u said that virgin cant give birth and bring the issue of sperm-there you reason like a child of science n technology but not like a child of God who believes in signs and wonders.I believe in science and apprecite the development it has brought but when it comes to matters of God, Science has little to explain.
800years before Jesus was born God informed the Israelites through Isaiah the prophet saying,“The Lord himself shall give you a sign;a virgin shall conceive and bear a son called Immanuel{Isaiah 7:14}
When time came,the angel Gabriel told virgin mary she will give birth and even mary was suprised and asked,how can this happen yet I know not a man?{luke1:34}Mary kept her self holy and bible confirms this in Mathew1;25 that Joseph had no sexual union with Mary till Jesus was born.
During this time Marys cousin Elizabeth who was very old also received prophesy to give birth to John the baptist.Science will tell you that a woman reaches menopause at around 40 yet Elizabeth gave birth.Even the husband Zechariah doubted reasoning from nature.
2.The MAGI BEWITCHING JESUS!-Jesus came to save the lost,the wicked,siners like me to repent and turn to him and worship him.These people came to see KING born and when they arrived they worshiped baby Jesus not bewitching him!the bible says that every knee shall bow in heaven and under earth to Jesus.
3.Jesus NOT ACCEPTED BY HIS RELATIVES; Jesus was not accepted in his hometown because rarely did prophets were respected in their hometown.However,if you study bible deeply,later when Jesus had ascended,all his brothers now believed him as God and were among the believers in the upper room waiting for Holy Ghost in Acts1;14. James that wrote the book of James in the bible was Jesus brother testifying that he is a servant of Jesus.
4.WE PASTORS CLAIM TO BE SAVED YET IMORRAL,JEOLUS,HYPOCRITES-Salvation is a process,not instant coffee.As we believe in the saving power of Jesus,his spirit begin to work into our lives dealing with our character and releasing the fruits of holy spirit.Peter walked with Jesus for 3years yet he denied him and went back fishing when Jesus died.But Jesus still restored him.Peter became the head of all apostles,so being a pastor does not mean you are sinless,we rest on the mercies of God and plead on his blood.
5.JEHOVAH IS WICKED!-Am shocked to hear this from you,but I dont blame you because of your understanding of the bible in old testament context.Jehovah is holy,loving and merciful-yet punishes sin and is just and consuming fire.Even the children of Isreal were seriously punished in cold blood when they turned their back on Jehovah.That is His sovereignity.

Pastor Nelson Odhiambo, there is nothing to apologize for on my post. As long as you have called Legio Maria and Ondeto as evil and Devil, there is no word that deserves apology than these. So, go on and use your words freely. I will not call for apologies. Furthermore, there is no need to call me a man of God yet you say I follow Devil Ondeto and evil Legio Maria. Your pettiness and religious expedience must be exposed and I will not spare any terms to expose you as a LIAR.
a. PASTOR ODHIAMBO, YOU ARE A LIAR: you have lied that you had a dry fast for 40 days. Lies such as these are intolerable and reckless. And you are telling me to fast for 3 days and test if Legio Maria is truly from heaven. Liar. You think I am not sure about my religion and faith, and so I am looking for solutions to my spiritual problems? I am sure of my faith and beliefs. I have tested them and know how true they are. I need no fasting like you. Insecure people like you think fasting is the solution to their problems. You simply have a psychological problem my friend.
b. You claim that God spoke to you and made you the “fighter” of Legio Maria. THIS TOO IS A LIE. After your “disappointment” for being a successful Legio Maria, you decided to conform to society and reject the FAITH OF YOUR DEAD FATHER. A backslider like you can throw any mud at their former faiths. I have seen many such people and heard their lies. I am not surprised that you can lie so loudly about your backsliding. Even Christianity had people like DEMA and NESTORIOUS. There was ARIUS and MONTANUS. Many people left and many joined. Backslider, pastor Odhiambo, your leaving Legio Maria does not change anything. Only your LIES will affect you.
c. The LIES IN YOUR BOOK: THE KINGDOM OF BLACK MESSIAH is even more monstrous and evil. You claim to be saved but lie like pagans and idolaters. I read the entire book and learned how MYOPIC AND SENSATIONAL PEOPLE can be as long as they ARE OF LITTLE LEARNING. With your small theological knowledge, you plagiarized irrelevant material and parched them together. You quoted the bible anyhow and misused texts to your favor. THE BOOK IS A SHAMEFUL FRAUD. A CHILDISH LIE!!! The book is based on myths and the origin of Ondeto according to nonsensical legends. BUT WORST: your BLIND HOLY SPIRIT DID NOT REVEAL TO YOU THAT YOUR FACTS WERE PURE MYTHS. You tried to relate Ondeto and Legio Maria to Babylon using pagan history, the sort of thing that speculative SDA preachers have tried to do with Roman Catholic. You missed the most crucial things: including the origin of Legio Maria masses, beliefs etc. Finally, I learned that your claim to have been a true Legio Maria is a childish joke. You were not a practicing Legio Maria and probably followed your family to church without knowing what you were doing. d. You claim that Simeo Ondeto did not solve your family problem and only a pastor did this. Well, did Jesus solve the stomach problem of Timothy? Well, did Jesus save people like Peter and Paul from being killed by ferocious opponents? Well, did Jesus save Christians from the wrath of Nero? My point is simple: YOU ARE SIMPLY LYING. There is no family problem that Simeo Ondeto cannot solve if you pray directly to him. What you are saying is nonsensical. That you had a problem and did not pray yourself and waited upon some Legio Maria prophets to help you and they failed. e. You said that you removed your teeth. You did not do this because of faith but because you wanted to conform. Moreover, I want to inform you that the removal of teeth is not a fundamental Legio Maria belief. It was based on traditional African (Luo tradition) and was a sign of rebellion from Roman Catholic. You credit this practice to Simeo Ondeto. But I am sure you never heard him say so. I know some people did this and asked you to do this. But this is no problem. Jesus was not called Emmanuel. I do not know where you got Jesus’ name of Emmanuel from. Similarly, the book of Isaiah did not talk of a virgin but a young woman. I was in Legio Maria, by birth and a staunch one but I thank God for setting me free from that cage. Christianity is in decline across the globe with USA recording a decline of 15% this decade, Europe a decline of 12.35%, and Asia a decline of 19.7%. Close to 5 billion people on earth are not Christians. If they are all lost and your God is the right one, sorry. Just let us be lost.
b. I respect you as a human being. Indeed, I love you as a fellow human being regardless of your religion. If you continue spewing religious hatred by calling us LOST, there is nothing different in this from a Muslim calling a Christian KAFFIR. The language you and Pastor Nelson Odhiambo continue to use is devoid of religious love. You are merely expressing your prejudices.

God as Meichizedec came and walked on earth. He lived with men and preached. His deeds are not much recorded in the bible, but we believe that He was the High Priest. If you are schooled enough, then you know how that metaphor means when we say ‘like a thief’. The final mission of God is called the GLORIFICATION. When you have been CALLED, you will be given SALVATION and after that, you must now be GLORIFIED. Your deeds and actions will be used to judge your fate when you stand before the throne of God. So, on the question of the virginity of Mary during the birth of Jesus, kindly end the debate there because I have written a lot up there about Mary. And that for sure is what I believe. I hv read deep your comment on the issue of simeo ondetto partly am impressed by ur humility but greatly astonished with the pride , arrogance and judgemental altitude which is far from Christ’s value
my call is that God’s nature is a big mystery that we can’t understand unless guided by the power of the Holy Spirit further more God is not limited, he can be and can do anything at will and his ways are not ours’ he can even turn stones to be men then worship him and he does not consult men to reach his purpose, so faith is a gift of believing than seeing, touching or using our limited human reasoning e.g Mary conceived by the power of the holy spirit is not strange as nothing is impossible with God. this does not mean that God was unable to come in any other way “he choose Mary”, thus to some extent scientific knowledge to how God works can easily mislead us from the truth.
A poor sinner like me, my advice is this : before we make conclusion on anything spiritual we should pray and mind our words lest we blaspheme which is even more terrible, it is even better to give no comment but pray on something we are not sure of.. It is also in order to note that God will judge us out of three major things ” faith, love and our deeds not denomination or whether saved ,pastor, bishop, prophet( human impositions) or not
, the unmeasurable love of God will also saw some of non Christians who are humble and keep commandment of love, thus better than us enter heaven.
As it goes every fruit is judged from what it bear, i have gone through the teaching of many priests, pastors, evangelists but non of them teaches love, humility, way to Christianity like Simeo “non” ( please read any of his true teachings and ull find that he is far much better and incomparable to our pastors,prophets,bishops etc) and ull even become a better Christian. It is true that most of our pastors instead of preaching Christ gospel and denouncing devil they tear on their fellow Christian denominations bitterly tearing Christianity apart in pretext of salvation but unknowingly helping devil to tear Christ’s body apart. Simeo taught about love of God, humility he cautioned pastors from attacking other Christians but should concentrate only on preaching about the kingdom of the living God,and preaching to those who do not know Jesus Christ instead of attacking other Christians “remember that we are brothers in Christ) in fact in one of his teachings he taught about the horrible vision of hell which he saw, the harsh suffering there and those who says that there is no hell and that people should refrain from their sinful nature and follow Jesus Christ in truth. He explained that Hell is real .,my dear friends how can a devil drive out devil from people and also preach good news of salvation and love? can the devil preach against satanic practices? can the devil change ones life from pride to humility ? finally can the devil preach spirit of charity, taking care of the unprivileged in the society e.g ophans,widows etc? .If Simeo was doing all these mentioned good deeds which u ure self u don’t do how do u dare call him devil? in fact u should repent and leave judgement to Christ alone ,scientific and human findings are vague and will take us no where, in simeo I’ve seen Jesus , spirit of mortification and am a better Christian even than before. And it is true that before Heavens simeo is far much better than me and u the critic in fact incomparable because ure teachings only brings hatred not love guided by the Holy Spirit
Lastly my advice is this, what should worry us most is our relationship with God guided by his power of love , Faith humility and action as only these will constitute our final judgement before him .
The world has different beliefs that only Gods knows the true anti Christs ” from the beginning of Christianity many personalities have been called anti christs even by some respected Evangelists yet they die and others come, knowing or not knowing any of them or judging other churches will not save our souls, Christ is the only judge and he cautioned us on judging others.

I thank you all in the name of God. Let us just pray and repent our sins. God loves all His creation. Nobody is special before him. We shall all be judged by our actions and not denomination.We all serve one God. Let us not be divided by denomination. I am a Legion Maria but what I know is that we pray through Jesus Christ and in His death and resurection we believe. Ondeto’s teachings also came from the Bible and He urged the Legio Maria’s to pray through Jesus. The holy spirit is the one who revieled Him as the son of God. He is the same Jesus Christ. We are not anti Christs. Even our masses and the rosary prayers all go in the name of Jesus Christ. I believe that God’s power is beyond human imagination and understanding.. I also was an alter boy and even got ordained as deacon of Legio Maria. I saw the light when my sister who goes to a protestant church invited me to her church. The best move I have ever made! I wouldn’t have been here typing this message should I have stayed in Legio Maria. Majority of those so called “Priests, Vicars and Bishops” are engaged in some dodgy activities including adultery! Every Priest that I served under during my time in Legio Maria were married and still engaging in sexual activities with members of the church! And yet they preach of 10 commandments.
