Kenya: Leaders snub Raila as rebellion brews in ODM

From: Kuria-Mwangi

Lee. Nelson, Afande and other telling Oduya off, hold off your horses. The ODM leaders who were supposedly rigged by team Rao dont even want to see Raila’s face. They have refused to listen to his plea to meet and instead told him to dissapear. This is not good at all. Oduya is vindicated here so lets not call him a rumor mill or rumor miner. Rao has to be careful. If loses Ndhiwa, his ego will be busted and he will be like a deflated balloon. Please lets pray for Agwambo. He needs our prayers because things are not working his way this time. I feel sorry for Rao.

Party insiders told the Sunday Nation that a National Security Intelligence Service (NSIS) report gave the Kanu candidate a head start over ODM’s nominee Agustino Neto.

In Summary

* Last Thursday, the PM had called a meeting of the 23 people who had sought the ODM nomination for the September 14 by-election.
* Some of them skipped the meeting and have been openly campaigning for the Kanu candidate Mr Tom Alila to protest their displeasure with the party leadership.
* Mary Ojode, Dancan Osodo, Washington Kale, Robinson Onyando, Ted Odero, Dennis Orero, James Omamo, Charles Kanyangi, Hamilton Orata, Robinson Mireje and Daniel Odinde snubbed it.

Ten ODM nomination losers in Ndhiwa constituency snubbed party leader Prime Minister Raila Odinga who had sought to meet them in a bid to avert post-nomination fallout.

Some of them skipped the meeting and have been openly campaigning for the Kanu candidate Mr Tom Alila to protest their displeasure with the party leadership.

Party insiders told the Sunday Nation that a National Security Intelligence Service (NSIS) report gave the Kanu candidate a head start over ODM’s nominee Agustino Neto.

But Karachuonyo MP James Rege, who is the ODM chairman for Homa Bay county, dismissed the NSIS report as propaganda.

One of the losers, Mr Jeremiah Owiti, said he skipped the Prime Minister’s meeting because it “adds no value to me and to the party”.

“Mr Odinga has taken the Luo Nyanza vote (bloc) for granted assuming that it’s guaranteed for him to bag,” Mr Owiti said.

Tip of the iceberg

He said ODM party was facing many challenges in consolidating its support in the region, adding that the recent fallout was just a tip of the iceberg.

Another loser, Mr Ogutu Kale, said he snubbed the meeting because it was meant to coerce them in “supporting an unpopular candidate against the will of the people”.

Those who attended the PM’s meeting were Monica Amollo, Mike Agwanda, David Ojwang’, Agustino Neto, Tom Obondo, Edwin Oduru, Moses Lore, Beatrice Ogola, Kennedy Opiyo and Collins Lore.

Mary Ojode, Dancan Osodo, Washington Kale, Robinson Onyando, Ted Odero, Dennis Orero, James Omamo, Charles Kanyangi, Hamilton Orata, Robinson Mireje and Daniel Odinde snubbed it.

Sources said those who attended the meeting told the PM they were not pleased with the way the party secretariat and the elections board had been handling nominations.

They reportedly recommended the separation of the party’s elections board and the secretariat.

But Kanu’s candidate Mr Alila, who has reaped from the ODM fallout, says his candidature and support have nothing to do with the ODM politics.

“I am seeking the seat as an individual with leadership credentials,” he said. “If it pleases even people for the ODM side to back me so be it.

They are more than welcome. Together we shall forge ahead.”

Dear Afande,

As usual, you are digressing. I have raised substantive issues which, if you are serious, you should respond to rather than your usual side shows. Refer below;

* The returning officer only announced the result for one out of the 21 candidates.
* The presiding officer who tried to intervene and intercept the rigging scheme was beaten up and voting materials destroyed.
* Agostino Oyugi was enjoined in the petition challenging the qualification and integrity of the Rt. Hon. the PM
* Tom Alila is currently the people’s favourite.
* After vote counting, it took ODM presiding officer over 8 years to declare the winner, during which time, he was under intense pressure from Misoi not to release the results until the party give the go ahead.
Now, these are the issues that you need to respond to instead of citing non-authority.

Anyway, I do not want to blame you a lot since you may not understand the power plays on the ground.

Thanks for sharing Oduya. I heard the same info in other forums but ignored them as rumors. If that happens, it will a lesson to Rao and his foot soldiers.

Dear All,

For the first time after a very long period of time, the most preferred Party in Luo Nyanza, ODM may suffer its first defeat in its stronghold of Luo Nyanza after the Party reportedly rigged the elections in favour of its nominee, Agostino Neto Oyugi. This is contrary to the tradition, where after the nominations, regardless of whether the process is free and fair, ODM’s (or party of choice) candidate is automatic MP even before the elections. Agostino Neto Oyugi was allegedly given the the party’s nomination certificate as a compromise since he was one of the Young People who enjoined Raila in a case challenging his academic qualification and integrity, a matter which is currently before the High Court. In exchange, Agostino Neto Oyugi is required to withdraw or discontinue the case against Rt. Hon. The PM, Raila Odinga . However, as things stand now, things are likely to boomerang on the face of Raila Odinga as Ndhiwa Seat is likely to go for Tom Alila of KANU as voters are roaring to vent their anger on the ODM nominee, Agostino Neto Oyugi for the electoral fraud that Raila Odinga perpetrated against them.

Despite the fact that Duncan Jomo Osodo was the people’s favourite, who actually won the ODM’s nominations by an overwhelming majority, Raila/ODM gave orders to the ODM by nomination Returning officer, Elias Kitone to declare Agostino Neto Oyugi the winner after nearly 8 hours of consultation. The presiding officer who had earlier tried to intervene to scuttle the rigging scheme was beaten up and nomination materials destroyed in preparation for rigging.

The returning officer, in trying to implement an order from its master, only declared the winner leaving out the remaining 21 contenders. In fact, his excuse that he needed more time to reconcile the votes from all the 140 polling centres betrayed him even more because, how possible was it that he declared Agostino Neto Oyugi the winner without reconciling the votes. It is this action that led most of disgruntled aspirants who were top contenders to sign a petition that was later presented to the Raila/ODM.

Some of the aspirants interviewed by the members of the press expressed their frustrations of the meddling of the nomination by the party. Aspirant Robinson Mireje alleged that in the face of such delays, the ballot papers were being marked in some secret locations after which voters would be subjected to a sham process. Michael Agwanda another hopeful said they read mischief in the delay and that something was being cooked.
