And when Representative Todd Akin claimed that women couldn’t get pregnant from “legitimate rape,” Ohio MoveOn member Lucy Owsley was ready to fight back.

Lucy started a petition at SignOn.org asking her congressman, Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner, to denounce Akin’s statement. And guess what? Just days later Speaker Boehner denounced the statement and called on Akin to drop out of his race for U.S. Senate!

Lucy’s petition became part of the public pressure that led to not only John Boehner, but Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and other leading Republicans speaking against Akin’s harmful statement.
