Raila-Uhuru Presidential Race: A chance to take us to heaven or hell!

    By Odoyo Oriri, Cleveland Ohio

Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta are undisputed frontrunners as they sprint to the finishing line in this historic presidential race. In the next few hours or days (in case of a runoff) only one will step to the cockpit to steer the ship through the storm. The historic presidential debates gave Kenya some vague clue as to where the country is headed. The gentlemen have rare and unique opportunities to define this nation’s destiny in such a profound way capable of propelling the nation towards heaven or hell landing. Only one will inherit a nation that has bled enough and continues to cry out for blood transfusion to restore her health to survive and thrive with God’s help, new constitution and transformational leadership skills.

Kenya’s Pain and suffering has left citizenry weak, tired, angry and extremely vulnerable forces capable of igniting a devastating fire like the one we experienced in 2007. It is my hope and prayer that they are cognizance of the socio-political significance of the hour and truly understand that they are the embodiment of what is theologically and sociologically wrong or right with the nation of Kenya. The hour calls for a seasoned statesman, not a novice or a tribal leader, to seize the moment and lead forward by implementing the new constitution to the letter to alleviate the historic pain and burden.

Uhuru-Raila rivalry evoke deep seated pathologies within our collective consciousness; reminding of our tainted history of independent Kenya filled with ethnocentric mindset and painful experiences that continue to stand in way of progress. Negative ethnicity and corruption seem to hold the nation captive to evil forces that stand at the door waiting on whom to devour. The new leader must navigate the ship carefully, firmly, wisely, selflessly, humbly and embrace our rich diversity to help steer away from the storm and navigate toward forefather’s envisioned destiny.

The contrast of the two men is rather intriguing. First, Uhuru’s pedigree is exemplified by his polished and clear America quasi British english language accent. He’s a wealthy man by any standard having inherited his father’s business empire that include huge chunk of land a large as Nyanza province according to credible reports placing him among the world’s wealthiest people. The young Uhuru attended the prestigious St.Mary High school and the exclusive and private Amherst College in the United State before returning home to run the vast empire from his family.

Raila had a very different upbringing, though son of the first vice president, he missed privileges available to Uhuru. Odinga senior worked for about three years and landed into trouble with Kenyatta administration and ended to his detention leaving the young Raila and family without support leading to deep challenges to overcome. While in Kenya, Raila received an ordinary schooling accorded underprivileged children in his rural village and later proceeded to Germany to complete a high school and engineering degrees. On his return to Kenya like his father he experienced political persecutions for championing change. He stands today as the Mandela of Kenya; the embodiment of Kenya’s struggles and triumph over tyranny therefore his candidacy seems to transcends tribal tag. We trust the new leader to be inclusive and engage the diaspora not just courting the money but expertise and ideas to help build our beloved nation. We have been praying and fasting for the nation as Kenyans in diaspora. Sadly the majority of Kenyans living abroad are disappointed because they cannot vote but we love Kenya and wish the nation well.

Good thing is God leads voters into electing those who have vision and not pyscos. Raila is his own man, who never will do anything positive other than seek positions of power with hideous motives. The area he represented is the worst in clime and poverty, an area he has schooled youth to become thugs rather become nation builder. Born in Nyanza where his disciples know nothing else other than build something they did not build. Like his father, he should rest and be watched.
