Kenya: Nyatike Constituency on the move as power and water supplies are on the way to the villagers

RESIDENTS OF NYATIKE CONSTITUENCY MAY SOON ENJOY MASSIVE SUPPLIES OF CLEAN WATER AND ELECTRICITY IN SCHOOLS, INSTITUTIONS AND TRADING CENTERS.

Rural News Feature By Leo Odera Omolo In Muhuru-Bay Town.

NYATIKE constituency, which lies extremely to the south of the greater Southern Nyanza region, and bordering Tanzania on the mainland and on Lake Victoria, is soon going to enjoy massive supplies of clean water for life.

The region, which was for many years considered as the most backward area in Southern Nyanza, has also been earmarked for electricity connection and supplies to all secondary schools, health centers and other important public institutions.

For the residents to enjoy close administration, the government has created two more administrative Divisions, and posted district officers {DOs} to Othoch Rakuom and Got Kocholla.

Othoch Rakuom Division is covering the far southern ends, and ends at the Kenya-Tanzania border. The area include Kaler Location which is the area bordering Tanzania on the mainland .

The Nyatike MP, Edick Omondi Anyanga, hailed the government move as progressive, and aimed at enhancing administration of the area, by bringing the administration close to the people.

Two more administrative location have also been created in East and Central Kadem, as well as two more sub-locations, known as Thim Lich and Kogelo Orago sub-locations.

All these new developments will give the resident the sense of belonging. Their sons and daughter would be employed as administrators and in other fields related to Provincial Administration.

A visit to the area by this writer over the weekend showed water pipes being laid all over the places in anticipation of massive water supplies to the interior part of the constituency.

Works are also in progress for the drilling of boreholes and sinking of shallow boreholes in some other parts of the constituency, where getting fresh and clean water for health has always been a nightmare in the region.

Fishing and fish trade is the economic mainstay of the region. For that reason, the MP, Omondi Anyanga, wanted the government to do everything in its disposal to restore the ownership of the disputed Migingo Island, which he maintains is part and parcel of Kenya. “The Island belongs to the resident of Nyatike”, said the MP.

Between 500 and 600 fishermen operating in the island are residents of Nyatike. For many years, the Migingo Island was administered from Migori district before Nyatike was created as a district. And even during the colonial administration that ended in 1963, these small Fishing islands close to Kenya shorelines of Lake Victoria were under the administration of the old South Nyanza district.

The MP added that nearly 250 fishing boats operating on Migingo Island belong to the residents of Nyatike and so are the fishermen. “And my people are being forced to pay heavy levy penalties to the coffers of a foreign power with the full knowledge of our government. The Ugandan government has now threatened to evict all those Kenyan fishermen and traders, who are unable to pay the Kshs 500 levy per day”.

“It is time the Kenya government look for a quick solution to the Migingo saga. It appears as if diplomatic contacts and negotiations have failed, therefore the government must consider other options to have the issue resolved once and for all”, said the MP.

The MP was adamant that the Kenya government owes Nyatike people an explanation a s to why it has allowed foreign occupation forces on Migingo Isand, which is part and parcel of Kenya. “These forces should be driven out as they have become the source of harassment and embarrassment to the Kenyan people. Kenya citizens are being forced to pay excessive levy to forces of occupation in their own country. This is a big challenge to our government, which must act decisively, otherwise all the islands in Lake Victoria would be seized by our neighbors”, said MP Omondi Anyanga.

In communication and other infrastructures, Nyatike constituency is on the move. The MP wants the government to get rid of criminal elements in the area, who are hindering trades and business expansion by traders and businessmen. Nyatike, being close to the border of both Tanzania and Uganda, is potentially an important trade route to the entire East Africa region.

Disbursement of government revolving funds, namely CDF, School Bursary Funds, Road Maintenance Funds and HIV/Aids funds are visibly well distributed, covering many projects located in sub-locations and locations.

Nyatike, which is a multi-ethnic rural constituency, housing people from various Luo sub-clans and other communities, is potential for cotton production, and the MP is working round the clock to ensure that he sources more tractors, which could be hired at lowest cost to the local farmers, for the cultivation of the land for cotton growing.

We do appreciate efforts being made to put Nyatike at par with the rest of Kenya. But great developments are built on strong foundations of academics. Hon. Anyanga, invest massively in education, right from primary to post graduate levels. Organize friends and start a scholarship fund for the bright but needy students. We need education more than anything. The future will hold you dear if you make Nyatike proud!
    Thank you.

  2. NYARIWO JOEL OKOTH.

Very happy with the progress of our constituency.Congratulations to our hardworking MP Hon. Anyanga. You should massively invest in Education for us to be at par with other places of the country and to realize vision 2030.

  3. Gilbert Odongo

What cannot be evidently assumed is the fact that a thin line is what separates the truth from a lie, Anyanga’s performance is very poor no credit unless you are paid to make it appear so.

  4. Ershards Okello

The best development begins with human resource. We are only going to compete favorably if we invest first on education and human reource development. Being close to the lake is advantageous as well as detrimental to our people especially the youths.
We must set up a mechanism to curb the escalating volumes of pupils and students dropping out of school and revertting to fishing as the best altanative.
Hon. Anyanga has been relactant in allowing transparent allocation of the Education bursaries to many needy students in this area. Going by the fact that AIDS is prevalent in the lake region, and orphans due to the pandemic anavoidable situation…Should these children not be given a listening ear and their needs addressed?

  5. David Owuoti

The Mp. Has done alot. you have to understand where Nyatike has come from.Bwana Anyanga WE ARE FULLY BEHIND YOU.THOSE WHO HAVE NOT BEEN GOING HOME are the ones who are negative. Hon ,member is in charge.

  6. Kenneth Odida

This should not a platform for political fixation. Our problems as residents of Nyatike are so great that we can’t afford to play to the gallary by engaging in petty politics. Hon Anyanga has his time and all we should do is to give him the necessary support, not sabortage his efforts and call him names. Only time will tell if he deserves another term. Ours is moral support and not critism.

  7. Nyariwo Joel Okoth

We as the luo community will continue lagging in abject poverty so long as we still sit down and expect a politician to provide for us.What people should know is that the parliamentary seat is also an employment opportunity i.e MPs are also employees just like any other kenyan,so do we expect these MPs to use their own income to solve our problems?.If these critics feel that Anyanga is not a leader enough then why couldnt they run for the seat and outdo him in the last general election.Let everybody do his/her work instead of expecting too much from these politicians.God bless you all!

  8. Robley Ngoje

    Leo,

Thank you for your captivating story about the constituency. Nyatike constituency has remained under developed for decades. The introduction of Constituency Development Fund has however created some little relief to the constituents of this hitherto neglected constituency by the administration.
What is annoying even more is the attendant abuse of the Funds by the leadership with worrying impunity and inequitable distribution of the limited resources. Residents of the constituency including myself should rise to the occasion and castigate those who are hell bent to abuse these funds including taking appropriate legal action as would be considered expedient.

  9. Constantive Apollo

I am happy that finally Nyatike is heading somewhere.Personally I believe in education,as a result I’d suggest that Hon.Edic Omuklela to fight for Education more than anything else.I am a Nyatike residence and am very glad to the progress he(Mp) is putting.kudos!!!!

  10. Robley

The MP must be advised to strive and stop the incessant thuggery that are politically sponsored in the constituency by a bunch of idiots who have failed to understand that we can not grow with that kind of retrogressive politics. The developments so far witnessed in the constituency were bound to happen with the introduction of CDF.

  11. Benard jakoyo

Robley Ngoje, we know your attitiude towards the Nyatike Mp. Central kadem is only a potion within Nyatike Constirtuency. Your differences with the Hon . some years back is still clear in our minds. So stop misleading kenyans with your substandard opinion. There is nothing you can offer to the nyatike people.

  12. Kennedy

I find it hard to comment on this page beacuse considering how people like Benard jakoyo react to sobber and intelligent comments from Robley, these are the same stupid fellows with distorted minds who dont think beyond their innerwears. infact all they enjoy is feeding from hand to mouth and they feel thats Nyatike served. we will never be fooled again. I even think this reporter from Muhuru is another one,his own mother dying in a dark smoke in a small 10×10 grass thatched house and drinking the dirty stinking victoria waters. when will these stupid fellows wake up and realise Anyanga is taling us nowhere? with his military kind of leadership. if this is the case with this website then you guys better scrap it

  13. Robley

James Williams who was a great philosopher once said “the art of being wise is to know what to overlook”. At this point I will overlook the comments of Bernard Jakoyo who appear to be suffering from the miasma of abject poverty and utter ignorance. I don’t think I can stoop too low to play in his league that is characterized with mediocrity and sycophancy that will add nothing to remove ignorance from him. Jakoyo I can offer you some assistance in terms of wisdom. Things have changed drastically in this country and nyatike is not excluded. We must bring the mature like minded residents of the constituency to help steer its people to the biblical Canaan. Jakoyo I do not know you but I would wish to meet you and demonstrate to you that Nyatike has a pool of brains that match national standards which cannot be equated to those people you are following for selfish gains.Nyatike is bigger than any of us including that person you are following. Cheap minds discuss personalities but great minds discuss issues. Let us use this platform wisely to help our people and avoid uncalled for side shows. For the records, I do not appear to know anyone called Anyanga with whom I have what you term as differences and you may shade some light. By the way, it may be important to know your credentials before we continue with any debate or exchanges with you!

  14. Nyariwo Joel Okoth

Hi guys! when will we stop all these politics and concentrate on work.Instead of throwing all these insults against each over the area MP,why cant we hatch a business deal as Nyatike youths so that we seek for youths funds from the CDF kitty.Remember “a small mind discusses individuals,an average mind discusses events and a great mind talk about ideas.”
If we are dissatisfied with the latter, why cant we organize for his removal through legal means. Why cant we form a youth forum to dislodge him.Let us not be like backing dogs without teeth.
I think this site should be “idea-generation” oriented instead of attacking each other with insults.Let us avoid retrogressive debates.God bless u!

  15. David Adero

My fellows,we should not show elements of medeivalistic, insultive and reluctant minds which are majorly based on political and personal ideaologies, instead we as theyoung,aducated,goal-orented members of nyatike should put in place some beneficial mechanisms aimed at improving our livelihoods. For if we are just like”Angry dogs by the bank of aflooded river barking at gazzels which they can not attack”then we will not be progressive.HON.ANYANGA is like our river through which we can get those good fortunes. You know if you are milking , you cant prick acow. My only urge to the HON.is to assist the bright but needy students upto their subsequent levels of education.

  16. Mr. Kambegs

Adero@ An evil is an evil. It’s not a secrete that Anyanga is manipulating and fueling clan differences to remain relevant in Nyatike politics. It’s quite obvious Anyanga doesn’t care about bright needy students from Nyatike since he hasn’t made any positive advances towards helping them. I know of several cases of bursary cheques supposedly written to UoN but never reach the intended individuals. Everyone knows Anyanga often thinks he can rule Nyatike with an iron fist, through deceit and silensing of decent. Anyanga is not a bridge, he is not a river, not even a stream. If anything, he’s the problem Nyatike has to get rid of. RETROGRESSIVE POLITICS OF CLANISM IN THE 21 CENTURY, BY BLOODY FOOL OF NYATIKE.

  17. David Adero

Mr Kambegs my point of view is just in concurrance to yours too,but time is about for nyatikeans to give parliament adevelopment committed Hon.I think being aleader is not aguarantee to subjugate the subjects but rather aticket for achange from better to best,if our Hons would be like the HON. OTIENO DALMAS then most assuredly they would be beyond doubt occupy subsequent parliamentary seats.HON .DALMAS sponsors all students of his constituency who have atleast attained university minimum grade to parallel with the supplement of his constituency CDF KITTY,there4…is HON DALMAS in adistinct parliament? Is our constituency not being allocated for?.

  18. Mr. Kambegs

One doesn’t need to be extremely rich like Hon. Dalmas to be an exemplary leader. It takes a vision, a commitment and a desire to make a difference. The problems facing Nyatike are quite profound: healthcare, education, agriculture, fishing, perenial droughts, floods of Kabuto just to name a few. These can’t be solved by the small politics of hero worship, clanism and undue inferiority feeling. We must, as young people, not only speak against these vices but also refuse to be used to justify evil by associating with Hon. Anyanga. We may not be able to vie against him today, but we must stand firm and tell him that ours is about a humble, just and moral society. Pass my greetings to Got Kachola.

  19. Kenneth Odida

The people of Nyatike are their worst enemy. We celebrate our oppressors and mock those who challenge the status quo. We allow petty issues of clanism divide us, we allow ourselves to be used and dumped by reckless politicians.
But we are not alone. This is exactly what the previous generation has done, the first generation in the independent Kenya. They danced to negative political tunes of divisiveness. And today we, their sons and daughters, have the price to pay. The price of extreme poverty, absent infrastructure, dwindling fortunes of fishery industry, shelved academic dreams, absolute vulnerability to minor infections and continued perseverence of iron fists of good for nothing politicians.
I doubt if this is the social set up we wish to bequeath to our daughters and sons. I don`t think our grand daughters deserve such levels of biting poverty.
Moreso if we can do something to avert this trend.
It`s simple! Non-cooperation with evil is the most peaceful, bloodless way. Let`s call their bluff, tell them to their face that never again shall we sit and watch our brothers molested, our sisters robbed of honest opportunities they deserve.
    So Lord help Nyatike.

  20. Arnold Okoth

Karungu region has always been neglected by successive political powers.Hand outs for the aged ain’t enough.

  21. festus oliech

One day we’ll give Nyatike the direction…………..for the destination, amen.

  22. Kenneth Odida

Unfortunate incident of Kadem West Chief killing a high school lad in persuit of his teenage girl. It’s a shame, a shame and a big shame!
But for a moment, I’m proud of the MP Anyanga, for taking on the matter seriously and of course speaking national unity at the national front. I wish he stops frustrating our people, Jo’Kakoth included.

  23. Joshua O Bwai

I think we give the MP time to steer development on the basic and urgent needs of this constituency like water and power will remain far fetched dreams if not taken head on the way he has done. Infrastructure will come first the other things follow.

  24. Abunge

Am so impressed with some of us who are really stating the situation the way it is on the ground(Nyatike). Guys we do not have time to entertain opinions from people with their minds set on little money from Anyanga, what we need is a better Nyatike well fitted with all the necessary facilities. Aweu gi mago jothurwa.

  25. Kenneth Odida

United as a people of Nyatike, there is so little we cannot do. We know where we are in education especially for the girl child, the real threat of malaria and HIV/Aids at our beaches, extreme levels of biting poverty that forces bright kids differ their academic dreams and the unproductivity of vast part of our land. I’m proud because you are a guy humbly brought up. Someone who knows what it means to go without food. A leader who knows what poverty can do to our pursuit of quality education. Mheshimiwa, we have to be our brothers’ keeper, our sisters’ keeper. Let’s help the needy kids realize their academic potentials!

  26. Jacobus Ogango

Want your support and comment now that our M.P has started to hibernate in Nairobi and is not even going home. This man has failed totally and is just using our CDF- money for his personal gains, Kindly give your contribution on what to do.

  27. mark otweyo

The future generation needs education than anything else, the best weapon to fight poverty is by eliminating ignorance and this can only be done by investing much in education than anything else.I am appealing to the interlectuals from Nyatike to start Scholarship programmes to educate the Nyatike of tommorrow

  28. bodrick otieno

I congratulate you for the entire effort you have done in bringing power to the people. The young men of the region can now open up small businesses and generate income out of this.Keep it up Mr. Anyanga….

  29. George Gor

I appreciate the new development in nyatike. The only problem is that karungu is left out. Please the mp should do something we are part of nyatike.

  30. okuku ogoye.

mp for for nyatike is serving the interest of CLAN, IN NYATIKE NO ELECTRICITY IN KANYUOK, KANYARUANDA, EAST OF MACALDER AND OTHERS BUT IN KOLAL THE POWER NETWORK IS IN SMALL CENTRES AND ALL SCHOOLS. GET READY TO PASS THROUGH THE WINDOW AGAIN. ONE OF GREAT SUPPORTER TELL PEOPLE YOU WILL BUY ORANGE CERTIFICATE FINE, TRY THIS TIME.

  31. mark otweyo

I wish to clarify that this issue of prending to love the MP Mr Edick Omondi Anyanga should stop, but if you realy love him continue doing so at our expense. I wish to stand by my people and tell the truth(KAKOTH)Thi man some Nyatike constituents call their MP is not a reformer, he has continously ignored as upto the point we soon going to the streets,if it is issues of development he has concentrated only in his clan, bursary and sponsorship we Kakoth used to get are now things of the past, our children still boil up in interlectual poverty yet they can be educated if there is fair ditribution of resouces though scarce

  32. ongola sabiano okinyi

am glad we are eventually heading where i have been longing 4 bt still we need to do much as the people of Nyatike

  34. David Adero

The proponents of development is merely education ,if really we are anxious towards championing for the change then lets be educationally focused, instead of some of us trying to get alligned to the political domains purposed to flood their pockets at the expense of the low social caste.

  35. Abunge K'abunge

“An empty stomach is not a good political adviser”. And this is the problem with some of the people leaving their comments on this page. It is high time you noted that “truth between candid minds can never do harm,” in this century, Anyanga does not even fall under the category of those who should day-dream of becoming leaders.

  36. nelson origa

please give the mp time to do some work. i do not know the mp, nor do i know of any development he’s made so far, but i know every leader needs support.
the can’t do it alone. we need to support him, united behind him or we will forever be complaining. there is always room for improvement. i don’t know how much cdf nyatike gets, but i know matters dealing with money are not easy to handle. give anyanga some time to prove his worth. thank you all who contributed comments.

  37. Ayungo Odero

Anchoring 2013 election campaign on a single item of hate for Anyanga or perceived deeds and misdeeds of the current MP will only breed another catastrophe! in 2007, we reduced all the wrong things that happened to Nyatike people to one item of bashing, Ochola Ogur then. All over sudden the chairman CDF and secretary CDF were all in the field campaigning against the MP and even angling the CDF misuse!! In the long run we were not able to decode the characters packaged with cash and hate speech. The result:- we only noticed we have an MP without participating in his election. The most unfortunate element is that we never seem to learn. Hate for the sitting MP can never be the only driving force. Nyatike cannot be divided into two simple camps: those who hate Tiany vs those who support him. Well I still insist that’s a wrong method. I may be wrong in this assessment but any brilliant mind following Nyatike campaigns and even sampling the posts in this page will in no minute conclude the same. What we forget is that the job description for this position MP was drastically changed in the new constitution. An MP will not handle CDF, they will not be responsible for rural access road constructions, they will not be in charge of education, nor for setting up health facilities. These guys belongs to the National assembly for national law making. The question we may want to ask the aspirants is this: What laws will they be pushing to the benefit of their representatives. Now, this is what we should be asking as Nyatike People. Things have changed guys. this is the time to look for that representative that will take on the national government on the laws that relates to Mining, fishing, farming and any item of our Nyatike social-economic structures. CDF, harambees and perceived generosity and cash hand outs will only give us another disaster at the national assembly.

  38. Ayungo Jim

@ Ogango Jacobus, we only need to look at the job profile vs the qualifications. But first bashing the sitting MP must stop to avoid confusion. Even if Omuga is the worst MP that ever was in the whole country, he cannot be the agenda of the aspirants and their supporters. We need to S. T.O.P it and the sooner the better. Anybody hiding behind Omugas perceived wrongs must be hiding some dangerous weaknesses. by whipping our emotions with hate speech and money, the hidden card that they intend to pass without notice is their poor records of lack of thereof. We need to ask these aspirants hard questions that relate to the Job they are applying for. some of the interview questions would be. 1) what legislation at the national level directly affects Nyatike peoples econimic well being, example in areas of Energy, environment, health, mining, fishing? 2.) what do they intend to do about them once in the national assembly ? 3) How will their actions at the national assembly change the way we leave in Nyatike either directly or indirectly?……Yes this is the new role of an MP….surprised? dont be…..The Odeges of this world should tell us what they will do about legislation that deal with the use of Lake victoria waters and how this will affect the people of Nyatike and of the Mining bill and how the macalder mines will benefit our people in terms of mining rights and ownership. These are critical issues not people talking about Tiany from Morning to evening. At least Tiany is talking about irrigation around Lake victoria which largely will help Kadem address the chronic water, food and flood problems. Now, these are real issues we should be talking about. Aspirants should be telling us one item they are passionate about. Omuga is passionate about irrigation. What is Odege passionate about? what is Otieno Ogola passionate about? we need to know and to know it now then we can decide.

  39. Mary Maisory

My dear brothers at this point in time we need to sit round a table and conduct our own situational analysis: WHERE ARE WE NOW?, WHERE DO WE WANT TO GO? HOW DO WE GO THERE? BROTHERS LET US GET A FORUM AND CHART OUR DESTINY. Your sister in development of our beloved Nyatike.

  40. George

Let us hope that many fishermen along Lake Victoria will be helped both physically with the Lake and fishing as well as spiritually speaking also. Which would include knowing the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour and Lord God. Who was God manifest in the flesh who came into the world to save sinners and to seek and to save that which was lost. And that he died and shed his sinless blood as the atonement for their sins against God and was buried, and rose from the dead the third day, was seen of men, and went back up to heaven. And all who will repent and believe the gospel can be saved and have a home in heaven and also miss hell fire forever for their sins. This is good news for those who recognize themselves as sinners in need of a Saviour and are in need of the righteousness that only he can give. This is found in the Authorized King James Holy Bible, the inspired and preserved word of God. And for more information www. fellowshiptractleague.org.

I Jakarchuonyo, made a visit to Nyatike for the first time on 4th Aug.2013. It is a beatiful land and I was impressed with the development projects like rural electrification, road constructions and water projects. It needs teamwork involving scholars and community members in the region to realize a better development. Anyanga has started. with politics aside, support him.

  42. July owino

This is very interesting, I hope and pray that Nyatike people can join hands together and concentrate on development issues. I know we can’t do it all at once, but we can start and work our way to the top.

  43. Tracey Kausi

I am really disappointed of what is going on over there. I hope and pray so kadem and Nyatike people can join hands together and do somethingon development.
