Sect leader’s wife was killed by rivals

By Citizen Correspondent, Nairobi.

The wife of jailed Mungiki leader Maina Njenga may have been executed by the sect’s splinter group, inside sources have revealed. This is the group that has been expressing discontent over handling of funds raised by the sect.

Since her husband was jailed for five years for possessing an illegal firearm, Mrs Virginia Nyakio Maina was left with the responsibility of handling sect funds.

The sect members raise the money by collecting illegal taxes from bus termini and from residents of a number of estates in Nairobi’s Eastlands..

A sect member who spoke on condition of anonymity said the money they collect every month runs into millions of shillings. The money is stashed in a bank account jointly operated by Mr Njenga and his wife.

Although the spiritual leader has the right to use whatever amount of money he would wish to from the kitty, members of the sect are also supposed to be assisted with the cash from the same fund whenever they are in trouble.

For instance, when a sect member is arrested by the police or charged in court, money for cash bail is supposed to come from the kitty. Even families of a member who have been charged in court or jailed are supposed to be assisted.

“This is what Nyakio refused to do. She has been keeping the money to herself. Even when police were killing our leaders and dumping their bodies in forests, she could not release anything even to the widows or children of the slain members”, the Mungiki sect member said.

Owing to failure by Mrs Maina to release money to other sect members, Mungiki has been divided into two.

Even before the division, there was another group that had split from the mainstream. This is the group of conservatives who insisted on retaining the traditional Kikuyu way of life.

Nevertheless, the group led by Mr Njenga have been trying to modernise Mungiki to look more presentable to the youths, especially the school children
