KENYA: POLICE TRAINING NOW EXTENDED TO 15 MONTHS.

By Dickens Wasonga.

Police recruits will now go for a 15 months of intensive training at Kenya police college,Kiganjo.

This is part of the on going police reforms targeting to improve service delivery to the public.

Addressing the press at Kisumu’s police divisional headquarters,a senior assistant commissioner of police Mr. Francis Ndegwa Muhoro said the extension of the duration was identified as one of the critical areas which needed to be looked into while implementing police reforms.

The SACP said the curriculum will also be reviewed to enable officers who under- go the trainings to be more suitable in serving the public diligently and responsibly so as to meet the international set standards of policing.

In the current program, police recruits train for nine months,a scenario which has seen many Kenyans raise concern with the duration claiming graduand officers were half-baked.

In line with the reforms , a team of senior officers from the police Headquarters are currently visiting various parts of the country to carry out customer satisfaction survey on the Kenya police service delivery trend.

The three weeks survey which kicked off last week is meant to evaluate the customer satisfaction in the Kenya police service with a view of recommending remedial actions.

According to Mr. Muhoro, this is part of an effort to support the wider public sector reforms which under-scores good governance based on a transparent, accountable and performance driven civil service.

There are two sets of questionnaires which the team distributes to both members of public and police officers to fill in and give their comments on how police services have been rendered in the past and changes they would want to see included in order to make service delivery prudent.

So far the western region team which is led by Muhoro and assisted by chief inspector Rachael Munge has been to Kitale, Busia and Kakamega. From Kisumu the team moves to Kisii and Nakuru in Rift Valley province.

The survey targets two districts per province in the country and is part of the commitment that the police commissioner Mathew Iteere made when he took office from his predecessor retired major general Hussein Ali.

The government has so far began implementing some of the recommendations in the Justice Philip Ransley’s report on police reforms. The reforms targets police housing, improved terms and conditions of service including fair remuneration among others.

The reforms are on a good course but any standard implementation needs a lot of intelligence on the staff since crimes are also going digital.I propose you do alot of classwork on the staff. Also you should raise the recruitment grade to at least a mean of c+.

  4. muhanga

The recruiting grades should be lowered, because students with good grades should join universities and colleges so as the low grade students can get chances. and why can recruitment be done online?

I think the reforms should take into consideration of new forms of digital crimes and hence most qualified youths should be selected.

thanks for the reforms but like other professionals like teaching, nursing, accounting etc i think the kenya police should raise their standards. a c+ could be better, and i propose the recruits should graduate with at least a diploma from the school of police in kiganjo. meanwhile they should accommodate undergraduates of criminology, security studies, penology and correctional since they have atleast investigation knowledge

this is the high time that the kenya police need to realize that they are professionals and the professionalism need to be planted and invested by you in your own personnel. please should you initiateve a continous training and development program within the the force running across all staff. we love to see our officers acting as professionals in their fields rather than carrying out duties without confidence only to use extra force which creates alot of attention from the public. identify officers within the force with skills and knowledge and strengthen their capabilities.

it is taking too long to recrute the officers and yet ratio is so small, inform the public when to exercise such.

As part of kenya police reforms, it should recruit diploma holders & above inorder to be viewed competent like other jobs. Also they should increase remuneration to its officers, in order to reduce corruption.

Why is it that nowadays the Kenya police are recruiting a very small number of national youth service men/women unlike the early time and yet their have the know-how of the military life?
when is the recruitment to be done next?

Actually i enjoy being in the environment of apolice,my concern is can the force forget the interest of lost teeth and base on academic, just like the U.S does because potential people are being locked out.
