What is the meaning of the word “machogo” in English? I’m a black South AFRICAN. My surname is Machogo I need to trace My roots I see the word “machogo” in your language which is foreign to me.

    Hello Sybil;
    ‘Machogo’ in the Luo language means ‘the last born’. Where the word is written in two words eg ‘Ma chogo’ it translates to “this is a bone”. There is a slight variation in the pronunciations when spoken to differentiate them.

    Chogo also means BONE in Luo language, where the last sound ‘O’ tends to be deep.

    The word MA – is used to mean “THIS”

    When conjoined – MA CHOGO would mean “this is bone”
