Subject: siaya county has apotential but people do not eat potential

by the way Siaya has a great potential but people do not eat potential

In Siaya county one sees a unique area, you admire the sons of this soil who lead as far as the white house and you look at those who dug the foundation of the opposition politics and ask why Charity could not just begin at home!!!

this county, whose beaches bathe in the waters of Africas largest fresh water body, whose potential is forever preserved by the brilliance of its men and women and whose future is as promising as the wasted years must never have its dream defered.

Therefore, at a time when cock crows for change, when the hour beckons for actions when the bell rings for better leadership, I choose to break the silence and propose that we the people should have town hall meetings of all candidates. listen to them how they want to serve us and their workplans then choose from from that since ALL the proposed people here meet the requirements shall we?

May the blessings of our binding document the constitution, the love of our citizens the patriots and the comitment of the good leadership deliver us to the promised land- our desired destination!!!

May as many as of this usefull opinon say iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Resting my case,

I remain the one among many patriots,

Kochiyo

Oburu is a big NO. This is the time for us to do things differently and extending it further than Ndori is not allowed. Let Him be the MP of Bondo. Today I was in Tom Mboya Labour College at Africa Peace Forum Kisumu Regional Forum where Mr Ochanda happened to be a facilitator and I was impressed with his way of presentation. I would like to know why people of Bondo cannot elect such a brilliant young man. Siaya County should be different from other Counties, we should not recycle people but we should put in fresh blood. I would mostly prefer a female Senator, Governor and Speaker. I had a chance to be with great women such Hon Phoebe Asiyo, Hon Grace Onyango and many more today the whole day and found out for sure that they have the great potential more so when they have
resources. JT Okinda you can bear me witness that Gem has never had a MP since Hon Grace Ogot left. Their is this guy in Diaspora complaining. He should simply come back here and help us build Siaya instead of telling us how he hosted so and so. Bwana it is not African to have a visitor then after his or her departure you start complaining. If you were sufficiently Philanthropic then too good. Those who are saying that people lost 2007 elections are ignorant of the fact of what happened. You should not cast aspersion on the integrity of these wonderful women. Those who are saying that Prof Oduol , Buyu and the rest lost are not sincere. You all know what became of the nominations in Luo Nyanza and we should not repeat it again.

In my view, this debate is premature for one; even the bills that the new constitution will be based have not even been drafted and ratified in Parliament. As much as we want to remain optimistic on this front, the road ahead will be very bumpy indeed as there are so many anti-reformists forces among us who are supposed to spearhead the implementation process. For NOW we need to be very vigilant.

Lets forget about the same old names that we always hear of, where are the NEW BLOOD with fresh ideas capable of bringing real change that our people so dearly need. For me, I will make my political position known next year around this time whether to run for public office in 2012 or not to run. At that time I will seek your support which will be based of my developmental record for I am nobody’s man, but my own man.

Many have been conditioned to think only in the box, revolving only around a few individuals and hoping our salvation will come from them, people like Oburu Odinga and Jaramogi’s PA in 1992 et al whose names are being mentioned here, if they have never made us develop as a people and now they are greying and some people still think they are the answer, then I think we are the problem.

Today, give jobs to even tech savvy and brilliant 25 year olds and you will see wonders, let us change our mindset. The world is moving and we are still wating for the sun to dry our bodies from where we took a bath instead of looking for a towel!!!

Julius,
You’ve spoken, Siaya is too big for those hand picked individuals. There are so many underling factors and historical injustices that must be addressed, I think Alego Usonga has very brilliant young men and women and will not accept seasonal politician with no performance track record on their own constituencies. If we are talking about young leaders then I don’t see some one who was Late Jaramogi’s PA before 1992 can be referred as a young man. Kwani at what age did he become a PA.? Pls. people refer to section 4 of Julius article (neo-colonial
mindset)

Chris, Siaya Kaba et.al,
It is nice that you have brought this idea on to the forum. I hardly respond to posts but I am obliged to respond because I am an interested party as an inhabitant of the county and one desiring a break from the current theatrics that have consigned our county to poverty. In fact, Siaya makes headlines for all the wrong reasons among them the least performing in education standards, high prevalence of HIV/AIDS to name but a few. At the core of all this is a fundamental flaw that must be addressed- The crisis of leadership not only in Siaya but in the greater Nyanza occassioned by sycophancy to you know whom. This has denied us quality leadership because any interpretation that you subscribe to a different opinion makes you be branded a traitor. Must all
people agree with a certain way of doing things however flawed that way is? Now, let me address myself to your propositions,

1. 1. You say, Greed, sycophancy and petty politics must be given room in the new constitutional order- I hope you meant MUST NOT be given room because I would shudder at the thought of it.

2. 2. All these community(ies) must be accommodated in any strategy- While I totally agree that the balance is necessary, at the core of this balancing is to address the development imbalances that afflict the county. As a matter of fact, the governor should come from the greater Siaya (Alego/Usonga, Gem or Ugenya). My reason is simple, in all developments in the county, Bondo (Sakwa, Yimbo, Asembo & Uyoma) have always had a head start for obvious reasons. Here are some examples,
a. When Ndere Ginnery was running, it was held captive by people from Bondo. When their desire for growing cotton waned, the ginnery died yet they are not willing to let go the leadership of the Siaya Cotton Growers Cooperative.
b. Bondo TTC was to be located in Alego. What happened? Right now as a constituent college of Maseno University, the alternative TTC to be constructed is being considered for a location in Sakwa.
c. Right now, the tarmacking of Bondo-Rangala road is going on. Why did the work have to start in Bondo which has a better road network than in Rangala? Knowing that our contractors are crafty, would it not have made more sense to start at Rangala so that they are compelled to get it to PM’s home? At the moment, progress of the work on siaya side is slow and worrying.
d. The Ndori-Ng’iya road is also getting tarmacked. Why is the construction site in Sakwa and not at a central place like Kogelo that would afford employment to youths from Alego and Sakwa? Again, work will start from Ndori Side while you know that Luanda- Siaya road is not motorable/ in dire status and people going to Siaya have to use Busia or Bondo road.

3. 3. Professionalism must not be compromised in the process- while you give credence to professionalism, I find the line up held captive by political interests. Why are we proposing politicians instead of professionals? Why are we not talking of the likes of Martin Oduor Otieno and a whole list of professors (Siaya has the highest number in Kenya) that have proved themselves in academia and public service? Other counties are thinking of professionals while you are proposing a list of failed politicians. Is this an opportunity to make them realize their ambitions? For me, it won’t matter if all were from one community for as long as they adhere to the
principles of justice as you allude.

4. 4. Finally, a look at your proposals intimate one thing, you are the ’right’ candidate if you are closely associated with the PM. I thought this is the neo-colonial mindset we are trying to break away from. While I am a supporter of the PM and his ambition to be president in 2012, his name need not be dragged in deciding the affairs of Siaya county. He has bigger issues to deal with in the greater Nyanza and Kenya.

Let the debate continue in a sober perspective and let us stop seeing everything from the perspective of Odingaism if we are to get our county to the level where others are heading. In fact, it has been my submission that devolution as good and desirable as it is WILL NOT realise equality but WILL STEEPEN INEQUALITY in the short term not because of lack of resources but because of the quality of leadership a county will go for. The choice is yours and mine.

We are always One.With Odinga we have died of poverty, sickness and ignorence.
Now that we are resurecting Odinga’s Name must be heard to glorify him as the strongest man of our life time and arole model of our victory Good over Bad.
In his name the our enemies gets scared.Without him the county we are speaking about now would have been just adream.I do belive in thisOdinga and nothing go well without him and i know that he wish well for Kababa!
i Ologa oywo opado jaka yaya my own brother studied in early 50s in both india

try hon Raphael Tuju…… he practises clean politics, within a short span of his short stint as rarieda mp people has seen what he has been able to do, ill definitely vote for him if,when he decides to be the governor….he been tried and tasted and has proved worth his salt!

  3. Olare Nixon

I came across this site as i was browsing for economic opportunity is Siaya county. I am impressed at the level of engagement going on. Being son of Siaya from Uyoma, my heart bleeds for my county which in terms of development is quite behind compared to all other counties in Nyanza.

Honestly there is way out to poverty ravaging our people despite the vast resources and potentials we have. First as we built the new county lets embrace open mindedness, we must keep out “jokamakama ema nyalo syndrome” go for equal opportunity to all deserving, let us restore our county to the years when all doctors in Kenya came from here! The future in this county not with the bigs family names among us but individual hard work of the youthful population within us. Arise and unite all the youths and hard working people .

  4. Oruenjo Evans Umidha

    I am fro Alego.
    I think we try Tuju if he wants the governor position. People like Ochanda has been frustrated with politics and in case he wins, he will need to recover his money first. On my opinion, being a lawyer and with kin interest in the development of this county, the following people should be considered( am saying to be considered while you vote);

Senator:Orengo-cos of the separation of powers in the new Constitution, senators and MPs wont run funds since the governor and his team will be the executive. Senators and MPs will strictly deal with legislation. I bet Orengo being a competent lawyer may excel in that position and represent us well.

Governor: Raphael Tuju. In my view Tuju is like Michuki, he is a good administrator and manager but can’t be a legislature like the likes of Orengo, Aringo, Donde and Mc Onyango. From the fact of how he solicit funds and build Rarienda from scratch, let us try him by giving him this responsibility.

Alego: This is where trouble is now. The level of poverty here has deterred good leaders without enough money to be elected and that is why Hon. Yinda is the MP. He has done almost nothing except fighting with councilors on trivial issues such as who to be elected mayor and so on. Prof. Jackline Oduol can fit this position very well. She is a performer, orator and down to earth. She is development conscious and will promote the development of this constituency of great men and women.

It will not be fair if l comment on the rest of the constituency ie Bondo, Gem, Ugenya and Rarieda since am not conversant with their leaders and politics as l am with Alego.

  6. Kennedy okelo(wuod Alego).

I think Alego people should start looking for better leaders who can understand their problems and search for solutions which can lead to development.Otherwise lets also try and make Alego a conducive environment that can allow development to greater levels.

  7. Keya.

It is true Siaya county has great potential that is untapped, but am happy to note that somebody has seen this. This time round politicians should not cling on some premiers for them to eat the county and parliamentary cakes.

  8. Omondi Opiyo

    Jokanyanam,

Now that we have talked about what every politician, past and present, has done or failed to do, the fate of Siaya County is in your hands. Each one of you is able in more ways than one: Politics & Governance, Education, Economic Planning, Tourism, Health, you name it. These are the things that make regions great, not politicians……i suggest that if we all purpose to take leadership in whichever area we are gifted in, we could all pull enough clout to tilt political leadership in the best direction for our county.

I come from Uranga……am not sure the last time my old man saw Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo in our village!

  9. GERALD

all talk.no action.as far as i know you people blindly follow raila odinga instead of people like raphael tuju.fact is the counties of central kenya especially kiambu nyeri and nyandarua will always remain the richest counties.you should go to nyeri town and gatanga and see the way people sit on their mps instead of the other way round like in nyanza.the policy is:dare you not bring development,we will humiliate you.ask p.g mureithi formerly of nyeri town

  10. AULO OWUOR (RARIEDA)

We need only managers as our MP’S , SENETORS , and GOVERNORS , NOT Politicians. We need to learn practically from what RARIEDA CONSTITUANCY experienced in the hands of HON, RALPH TUJU. If we can fight to change to THE POSITIVE LEADERSHIP in averagely 60% of LUO NYANZA ,then we can be sure of DEVELOPMENT, BUT IF WE ARE STILL PEGGED IN “THAT STYLE OF YAWA NIKODE” then rest assured we will move nowhere. JODALAWA, YAWURU WIU.

  11. Nyakwar Chief

Siaya county faces a myrad of challenges and will go down the drains if we the people of the county do not change our mentalities. A shift from traditional ways of livelihoods and sources of income will open us to the rest of the world. I do not understand for instance why we have to practice pastoralism in this day and age when weather is very unpredictable. My point is this, the leaders will only facilitate development at the county/national level but it is the people who actually go to the fields and toil. Governors, Senators and the rest might not do much but so long as our people have a paradigm shift in modus operandi then we are guaranteed to move forward

  12. Jandege

I have read every one of these blogs and have come to the conclusion that the theme of the blogs has completely digressed from the captioned subject. My feeling is that emphasis need not be put on personalities perceived to be fit (or unfit) to manage the affairs of Siaya county. Let us focus on putting in place systems that will ensure our desired goals are realised, irrespective of the individuals entrusted with leadership roles at county level. That is where legislation comes in and since I wish not to preempt the outcome of the legislative process, I will reserve my view on this aspect for now.
To the topic of discussion now – what is Siaya county’s potential? that is what we ought to be brainstorming about. We need to identify the opportunities that the county has to offer and identify how best to tap these. With an entrepreneural spirit, necessary knowledge and skills (readily available!) and adequate support from the private sector, county and national governments, we can uplift this great county and by extension our beloved country, to unimaginable heights.

    Jokanam,

I salute you all who have contributed to this site. The debate is very healthy and it is evidence that for sure you care and hold our county dearly in our hearts. I hail from Alego tatyien.
Yes indeed I agree that we have great people(luos as a whole) with some of the brilliant minds on earth. I am not an historian but I have been trying to trace the origin of our people. In my research I traced the footsteps of our forefathers backwards from lake Victoria to river Nile in Uganda through to Sudan and ending up at the delta of the Nile at the North in Egypt. Those who are more informed in history will agree with me that the ancient Egyptians were not Arabs. The Arabs in the form of Assyrians came in the other day after the discovery of iron ore. Check on the achievements of early civilization in Egypt, the people were black and for the records were owe our genes from them. At the time of Israelites migration to Egypt the Pharaoh and the people there were black. We are the true descendants of the great Pharoah people.
Why am I saying this, because we have the hallmark and ingredients that made the Pharaohs people great. It is the reason why we excel so much in human resource as professionals; doctors, scientists, lawyers, mathematician etc.

It is time now we act to build the whole of luoland starting from Siaya like the way our fore fathers in Egypt build a once upon a time a very powerful old civilization on earth.

It starts with you and me. This is the time to stop the talking but walk the talk. Look at the potentials God has endowed you with and ask yourself what is it that you can do that can make a difference and do it. Let us stop being bystanders and giving only suggestions on what ought to be done while expecting someone else to do it. Nay! nay, if it is leadership you aspire to do you young man I encourage you to do your math and grab it! If it is development you like start with yourself what can you do? can you start up a light industrial venture there? don’t we lack industries, We should start thinking of having our own look alike Konza city in Siaya county, we can start advocating and demanding for this, think of the opportunities we are going to have in the diaspora with the great lake countries in mind.

I urge you all to continue with the contributions and lets us make it more interactive it’s a great debate!.

  15. Wasonga

    Slyvester Juma,

Much like yourself I hail from Alego Tatyien and in the recent past I have been consumed by the desire to know the truth about the origins of the Luo People.

Having lived and worked along Many Parts of the Migration these people undertook I can Say with Supreme Confidence that the Explaination of Southern Sudan Being the Singular Point of Origin of the The Luo People is entirely incomplete.

Yes there are Many Of us whos Bloodlines orginate in this area but as a whole the Y-DNA Profile of these Population groups tell of a diffrent series of events that occured. This by the way the acccount drawn from blood is in stark contrast to what we are taught in school about where the luo came from and closer to or own recollections of who we are and where we have been.

Yes they were In Southern Sudan for Many years….By Virtue of our Migration route which could only have been on the banks of the River Nile owing to the in hospitable desert that exists only meters away from its banks.

Much as is here in Kenya, their ARRIVAL into South Sudan is recounted in the folklore of the Dinka and “Shilluk” Peoples of that Region.

Shilluk by the way is an Abusive word meaning “Black” …

There Arrival in Egypt is Recorded in their Blood and those of the egyptian people.

Egypt was also just a stop on the way …

This is because Luo recollection of their presence in this region is Transitive.

The Kalengin recall being in a place called Kagypta (Egypt) and meeting people they called kipyayamungeen.

    Kipyayamungeen were “white” persian.

In todays Lorestan Province of Iran Kindly find out which people in habit that region.

Find out why these Nomadic in habitants of the Zagros Mountain Range, are Called Lur.

Was Lur a place, person or activity ?

So far the information I have come across states that the Lurs were a people who congragted in open spaces they call Lhar (Ring any Bells).

They speak of an origin in Khu ghilo (ring any bells).

Y-Dna Profiles of Northern and Southern Egyptian People
    Northern 53% East African
Southern 65% South Western Asian 3% South Eastern European

Whiter looking Northerners are More African than the Darker Less “African” Southern Egyptian People. So

    1. Skin Color Has nothing to Do with Deep Ancestry. People change color as they migrate and breed with those they encouter along the way.

    2. The Peopling of the Nile Valley and how it relates to the story of Human Migration since genetic Adam confirms that there was a backward migration into Northern Africa that occured 40,000 years ago fron the Eurasian contient. There have since been several intercations between Egypt & Persia including an invading persian army that removed the last Pharao.

    3. Yes There were African People who lived in Egypt,, but by there is no prior Record of the luo people having lived in East Africa …between the period Post the Human Crossing of the “Gates-of-Grief” (Human Out-of-Africa Crossing) and arrival of Humans in Egypt.

    4. These people were most likely born off this contient. The Lurs of Iran are of gratest intrest because the Luo in Kenya Recall “The Journey South ” Having started in a place called Babylon. in the region of Lurestan province of south western Iran where todays Lur peole are found

    5. It is intreresting that in Uganda the Alur speak a language called Lur.

    6. In the Luo Language Lango Means a Person of a diffrent culture or tribe it is the name by which they refer to the Kalenjin who do not call themselves by this Name. Intrestingly the Lango People are a tribe in Pakistan who are not part of the Lur tribes and may have inspired the use of this name by luo and further confirms that the Lur have something to do with the Luo peoples.
So all in all Egypt was Peopled by Peoples from the contient and those from beyond this continent.

we live in the information age and by reading about the story of various people found along the migration route of the luo one will quickly come to see that there is more evidence that suggests that luo peoples originated in Persia.

Cassites + Elamites = Lur (lorestan, Iran) = Luo Thebbes (northern Egypt) = Alwaa (Nubia Southern Egypt (65% sw asian)= jo jur (jo-luo) bahr el ghazal (alien in dinka Languge)= luo Uppernile= luo uganda, kenya & tanzania.

They stuck to the river. It Watered them, fed them and was their navigation refrence & maybe also their inspiration to find out more about the lands from which all this water came.

Bethwell Ogot’s acount of the Luo origin is an acurate retrace of their movements in southern sudan.

But It Falls uppon the Rest of us Luo who live in the times we do, who have access to the tools we have and who are consumed by the innate desire to know who we are and where we are from to complete the story of our beginings.

Luo’s are Brilliant and hard working peoples,,built 300m high Pyramids a desert dicsovered mathematics,,tilled & grew crops on ice coverd rocky feilds,,, so indeed these people from Siala in Misri who travelled all the way down south to Siaya in Kenya have it in them to excell in the most adverse of conditions.

    Just Give them time.

True we need to do much research, Osiris was just one of the gods, their were others more but the sumpreme god was the Sun god. The ancient luo ancestors used to worship the sun god as the supreme being, did you know that could be another connection? Am doing my bit and I will come back.

Its high time people from Alego accept investors outside their region for the town to grow. we cant make the town grow much with only internal resources. we must accept competition from outside.

  20. sylvester juma

    Wuod Mahola,

Charity begins at home, this adage is a reality check! Alego is lagging behind in everything not so because of ineffectiveness or luck of capacity of it’s people. It is due to the stupid backward traditions and customs of the yonder that is still been practiced.Case in point is the feature by NTV NEWS yesterday regarding a homeless situation of an aged Granny going through, owing to her refusal to get inherited.

Up-surd indeed! in this time of the day, not only shameful to us but it is an human right issue. Where is the MP for alego – usoga? can someone prod him to act with lightening speed? if not so,the aspiring young leaders of tomorrow can you grab the opportunity to stamp your credentials and broaden your C.V.

I come from Hawinga, actually i think cultural practices and taboos are the root causes of development in siaya county. We also tend to believe that politicians as the ones who can uplift our livelihood, sadly the county is full of dreamkillers and enemy of progress. Our county has youths who are learned and rich but wont return to there rural homes to invest or share brighter development ideas with there kins because of our county retrogressive beliefs. Dear Fellow County People,

I humbly tender my appeal to you great people of Siaya County to consider coming together and fight the challenges that have been conspicously hindering the development of this county while at the same time advocate and enhance the opportunities that arise as we strive to develop this county to be a model county for the rest in the country.
Siaya region has been struggling in terms of development since post independence. The ginneries have been closed down, the town itself becomes a ghost town by 7pm. why are we not investing back to our county? Shut down factories around the country have been revived since end of Moi era, dont we have able leaders to advocate for revival of, for example, cotton ginnery in siaya? There are so many questions I would have asked, but fisrt, I seek your audience.
We need to form a SIAYA COUNTY PROFESSIONAL FORUM, which will bring in professionals from the entire county. This forum will give us the chance to share our ideas, skills and experience. We have professors, engineers, doctors, planners, environmentalists, and so much more. The county boasts of being the county with the largest number of professors, professionals and learned people. lets make use of these professionals and give back to our county. We can formulate a strategic plan for the county. Lets not wait for the governor to come and outsource the planning process of this great county, while, we ourselves can do this and only present to him to implement.
County people, it is my humble appeal to you to look at this proposal very carefully and agree with me that we need this and it is us and not the locals, neither is it our old folks at home to help this county.
It is you and me who can help this county. For as many are for this opinion you can hit me on my tweeter handle @benamolo or benamolo@gmail.com
Thanx in advance for your anticipated cooperation.

    Ben Amolo,

Thank you for deciding to become one of the ardent disciples among others on championing this noble cause.

Time for talks is over and it is time to get down to business and walk the talk. Those who are ready like you and me needs to start working at once, hopefully the fence sitters would join in after realizing that we are for real.

    1. Let us start on online registration of like minded people.
    2. Organize for interaction meetings.
    3. Transform the following to a professional/business organization.
    4. Once done involve the county leadership in the agenda.

What is your take on this?

Let’s interact more, get me on skype ;My skype name is sylvesterjuma.

Thanks people; it is time we put our heads together for the single purpose of charting way forward.
We need to consider a meeting as soon as possible. Maybe there is a think-tank already in place; we need to link with it at the earliest.
Time and distance [physical] may make it helpful to start on-line a.s.a.p.
If anybody knows how to link with any other efforts already on-going, it would help to share this information.

    Jo Siaya Ka baba,

Today is indeed a sad day when we shall gather to condole and express our last respects to one of our departed gallant sons… Fidel Odinga.

May the Almighty God receive him well and he may rest in peace.

Last but not the least , my message to all the charismatic contributors on the blog …..we started something good and then stopped…. can we pick up from where we left.

    Best regards,
    Sylvester Juma
