Kenya: Saving Goinghomedotcom Trust

from A.E.O OGWELL

Wakenya am posting this for and on behalf of a very hard working and commmitted Kenyan, one David Ogot.

It is, I believe, our duty to support such initiatives and I appeal to you to MPESA whatever you have to him at 0726-005824. Nothing is too little. This is worthy cause especially with Mututho Laws in town! Let us send ANYTHING that we have, I have faith we shall reach there. Thanks in advance!!

Cheers
Ahmed

goinghomedotcom Trust in danger of being auctioned off.

by David Odera Ogot on Thursday, 27 January 2011 at 10:30

We (the goinghomedotcom Trust) are on the brink of being auctioned due to rent arrears. More than ten years work, building the organisation from scratch, with one addict (me) to now a total of 22 volunteers (18 addicts 4 affected) with no funding it finally looks like we are finally going down. It makes me sad, but more it shows that Kenyans are still in denial over alcoholism and other drug addiction. They only talk about how they are suffering from its effects, but when it comes to doing something – SILENCE!

I’m wondering about the office i.e. the goinghomedotcom Trust, the office I founded immediately after leaving rehab for drug addiction way back in February 4th 2001.

My dream was an organisation of addicts and those affected that would put a face to alcoholism (and other drug addiction) so as to eradicate stigma which is one of the main barriers to families and their loved one’s getting help.

I was told be everybody that I needed funding before I started but I ignored this ‘sage’ advice as I was burning to help others as I had been helped.

Was informed that with no funding I would not last 3 months.

Well we are still open ten years later running purely on faith. Now we are facing imminent closure due to rent arrears.

What is sad is that in spite of appeals on TV, Capital Talk on K24 (see www.youtube.com/K24) and to others Kenyans just wring their hands but nobody wants to bite the bullet.

I’m sad, I’m pissed off, but one thing I’m thankful for all of us at the office are still sober. We are stressed out yes, but no one has thought of drinking or using other drugs and for that, I thank God.

Hi. when we talk about denial this is what we mean. No comments posted nothing. no one has sent anything. A little girl sent all her savings (totaling to Kshs 50 or USD 0.625 see Facebook community page “save the goinghomedotcom trust”) We shout about many things wrong with government, what should be done etc. But given an opportunity to do something we go silent. DENIAL. Alcoholism and other drug abuse is ravaging kenyans. So slightly over ten years ago (4-2-2001) when I left rehab started the goinghomedotcom trust. Addicts helping addicts and by extension taking care of a major social problem. I was armed only with faith. No money. So are we going to be typical Kenyans and wait for the trust to shut down after all we have achieved and the thousands we have helped for Kenyans to start talking. Yes i know if we shut down then Kenyans talk.oh we would have done this, oh the government should have done this, oh where was the government…well guess what people…you and you reading this are the government..and it is your brother, sister, father, mother being ravaged and eventually killed by alcohol and other drugs…wake up people let’s not blame others for our own folly, for that is DENIAL.

Happy new year all. Let us make this the year of breakout. Ahamed Ogwell has just sent a donation of 1K. A couple of weeks ago Gilda Odrea was the first to send 1K. people together we can do this. Just pick up you phone and MPESA at least 1K to 0726-005824. Let us support the work of the goinghomedotcom Trust.

This is the 12th year we need your support. Odera and Ogwell have shown the way. I want to be able to say “the ‘O’s” have it
