Kenya: KKKK Alliance under fire as Kipsigis Community vowed to severe links with their cousins in Nandi

HECKLING OF MINISTER BETT BY NANDI YOUTHS IN ELDORET HAS ANGERED MEMBERS OF THE KIPSIGIS COMMUNITY IN THE SOUTH RIFT

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In KerichoTown

The last week’s incident, in which the Road Minister Franklin Bett was heckled and shouted down by a mob of youth suspected to have been mobilized from the Nandi Community, has angered several leaders and political personalities in the South Rift.

Bett was heckled and prevented from making his speech during the high profile public rally dabbed ‘peace and reconciliation meeting‘ addressed by President Mwai Kibaki and attended by several cabinet Ministe4s as well as dozen of local Kalenjin ODM rebel MPs.

The meeting was held at the 64 Stadium in Eldoret Town. When it was the turn for the Minister to address the meeting a group of youths, mainly from the Nandi community, in a section of the mammoth crowd, heckled him and called on the Minister to resign his cabinet job over the Ministry’s decision to demolish buildings on Mombasa road in Nairobi.

The Kipsigis leaders have read mischief on the part of the organizer of the meeting, the suspended Minister for Higher Education William Ruto, and vowed to severe the link with their North Rift cousins, the Nandi.

One such political personality is Mr. David Koech, an ODM leader in Litein, Bureti district in Kericho County, who termed the incident as part of the introduction of political thuggery in the Rift Valley.

He further termed the recent public utterances of some of the Kalenjin as “primitive and full of naivety and mediocrity”. He said the Kalenniu MPs are free to leave the ODM as individuals, but they must stop the bad habit of trying to use the community for power bargain.

Moreover, he said, only the retired President Daniel Arap Moi is the only Kalenjin leader who is mandated to speak on behalf of the entire community. Moi has yet to pass the mantle of power to anyone, and he is the only person who could call the short in the region. Others are pretenders.

Leaders from the Kipsigis community have also faulted the Kalenjin MPs for dragging the community into amorphous alliance called KKK outfit, saying such an alliance could be the recipe of chaos and political upheaval in the country.

Any Kenyan leader who cannot stand and compete with his fellow Kenyans for the top job is unfit and as such cannot be trusted with the presidency of the Republic of Kenya. It is self-defeatist kind of politics, which all Kenyan with sound minds must oppose vehemently. It is time for all level minded Kenyans to stand up to be accounted on their opposition to such primitive and backward politics of vulcanizing tribes together,

At the same time civic leaders in Kericho and Bomet Counties have also registered their anger at the incident of Bett heckling by the Nandi youths.

Their spokesman Councilor Zablon Cheruiyot, the chairman of Kipkellion Town Council said some ODM politician had hatched the plot of Bett’s heckling at 64 Stadium in Eldoret.

Other who supported Cheruiyot during Bett’s cousin’s burial includes Donald Ng’eny, Daniel Rono. Samuel Kurgat, Andrew Soi, Julius Tanui, Julius Korir, David Koirir, David Koech and Emmy Cheruyot.

Meanwhile the KKK alliance suffered heavy set-back at the weekend when the retired President Daniel Arap Moi visited Bureti at the weekend and denounced it as a dangerous tribal grouping. Moi visited Litein African Inland Church during thanks giving prayers.

The retired President warned that the formation of a political tribal alliance was dangerous and could fragment the country and cause disunity.

He was accompanied by the Roads Minister Franklin Bett, KANU Secretary General Nick Salaat, immediate former MPs Paul Sang his,Noah Too,John Koech, and south rift Bishop Edwin

Koech, has two private secretaries – – John Lokorio and press secretary Lee Njiru. He said the formation of Kalenjin, Kikuyu and Kamba “KKK” alliance has no place in the country, adding that there was the need for the national leaders who can unite the people and create a strong and united Kenya nation.

Moi told a large crowd which had gathered at the Litein School’s sports ground that the country risk disintegrating along tribal lines due to formation of several political parties and tribal alliances.

“The unity of the country will not be achieved if leaders push for the formation of many political alliances that are tribal in nature. Kenyans should be wary of such tribal chiefs who are working for their own selfish interests.”

“I wonder what these leaders are up to. It is wrong to push for the formation of tribal political alliance bringing together larger communities. Where will you put the Maasais, Turkana, Kisiis, and other smaller tribes across the country,” the professor of Kenyan politics wondered.

On the controversial issue of pegging presidency on youth, Moi urged the younger generation not to overlook the role played by elders, politically and economically.

Minister Bett told the Litein’s prayers crowd that he had forgiven those who planned to have him heckled for not being a party to KKK alliance,

Bett and Salaat called on Kalenjin to be cautious about the formation of a political party to be of their own, saying the community risked being alienated from the rest of the country.

USA: Winning the future

forwarded by : MOSES OPADO

De : Barack Obama

Hello —

Three days from now, on Tuesday, January 25th, I will stand before Congress and the country to discuss the State of the Union.

Two years ago, when I first addressed a joint session of Congress, this country faced a crisis unlike anything since the Great Depression — an economy that had spiraled out of control, putting millions out of work.

Today, we’re in a different place. An economy that was shrinking is now growing again. But across the country, millions are struggling every day — to find work, to pay their bills, to provide for their families.

It is clear that the moment we now face demands a vision for how we as a people will win the future.

And that vision — that agenda — will be the topic of my State of the Union address.

As the messengers, volunteers, and organizers of this movement, you will play a critical role in carrying out that agenda. Because of that, I want you to have an advance look at what I’ll ask of Congress on Tuesday.

I’ve recorded a short video to share that message with you. Please click here to watch it.

I will talk to the nation about how we can win the future by out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the rest of the world. By dealing with our deficits and our debt in a responsible way, and reforming government so that it’s leaner and smarter for the 21st century. How we continue to keep America safe and advance our interests around the world.

But we can do it only if we all work together.

I’ve recorded this video so that we all know what’s at stake and we’re ready for the work to come.

Will you take a minute to watch it?

Thank you,

Barack

Kenya: Speculation and Untruth About ODM Affairs.

From: Vincent Watitwa

PRESS Release 15th Jan 2011 |

It has come to the attention of the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) that a section of the media has for the past two days been writing speculative stories and articles about the future of the party without seeking the party’s right of reply in line with basic principles of fairness in Journalism.

Some of the articles and news items published and aired in the Media lacked facts and some were tailored to misrepresent the party as one under siege.
The Media has been speculating on a number of issues about the party and put ODM before public court without verifying claims and allegations quoting anonymous sources.

The Party is concerned by the fact that, although it respects the freedom of the media/press, allegations as published in the local dailies for the past two days are alarming, misleading and written without the care to call the party secretariat and the office of the Prime Minister for verification as per the principal of fairness.

A local Daily has today written that Hon Ministers Mr. Henry Kosgey, Dr. Sally Kosgei, Mr. Franklin Bett and Prof. Hellen Sambili “were instructed in secret a meeting to relinquish their party positions’. Out of the four, only Mr. Kosgey holds a National position (National Chairman). Hon. Bett and Dr. Kosgei are Members of the Party. Prof. Sambili has never been an ODM Member; she is MP for Mogotio on a UDM ticket therefore she holds no position in the party (ODM). UDM is an affiliate of ODM.

It was also misreported that the Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga who is the Party Leader while Commissioning the Butali Sugar Mills Factory in Kakamega yesterday launched an attack on Ford-Kenya and New Ford Kenya political parties.

Mr. Odinga never at any given time during his speech attacked the two political parties while referring to the end in the era of small political parties. Having been an active member and founder member of Ford-Kenya, Mr. Odinga would be the last person to discredit it. This, the Party believes is a spirited campaign to injure, assassinate and tarnish the image of Mr. Odinga. He is a respecter of competition and knows too well that it’s only in a field of various parties that political contest are held.

The Party notes with concern attributes to the Deputy Party Leader Hon. William Ruto that the Prime Minister denounced the youth who supported him in the 2007 General Election and had them arrested. It was also alleged that that Mr Odinga “created” the so called Kalenjin IDPs by forcing them out of the Mau.

The Party would like to make it clear that the Party Leader has always stated and affirmed his support for the country’s youth. That is why he is encouraging more youth to turn out in large numbers to take part in the grassroots elections and gun for positions in the party at any level. About the Mau, that was purely a government decision made by the Cabinet and not in anyway related to ODM or Mr. Odinga as the Party Leader. He is being crucified without trial.

The Media continues to speculate without confirming from the party on the forthcoming party grassroots elections claiming that Hon. Kosgey, the Party National Chairman will not be defending his position in the Party. Mr. Kosgey has never written to the party in regard to these claims and he continues to discharge his duties as he has always done.
He is still the chairman of the party and has stated that he will be standing for re-election as the National Chairman.

The grassroots elections scheduled for March 5th to 8th is for all ODM Members and not a selected few. ODM is and will remain a Democratic Political Party, and the Public knows this fact.

The Party requests the Media personnel to exercise full professionalism and wisdom while dealing with such weighty matters. The Media should seek to clarify on these matters by reaching the Party leader, his deputies, Secretary General, Secretariat or the party’s Communication department.

ODM is a transparent political party and has its doors ever open and will always be ready to clarify on matters. The media should not perceive speculations and allegations against ODM given to them by Members or outsiders to be “Gospel Truth’. It should always look out for clarifications in order to give balanced stories and features to the Public.

Ends.

Kenya: PROF Nyong’s position as the ODM Secretary General is to be challenged

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City

The Minister for Medical Services Prof.Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o is expected to face one of the stiffest election campaign in his life during the forthcoming ODM party election schedule for April this year.

Gumbe made the announcement at his Kisumu Milimani estate residence on Sunday morning when he summoned this writer and other newsmen.

He said he was responding to the demand of many ODM members countrywide who felt they were now being adequately served, and needed a change of command at the party Orange House headquarters in Nairobi in order to get things moving in the right direction.

He would be challenged for the same position by a man of almost equal strength in the name of Prof. Larry Gumbe, a fellow Luo who hails from Karachuonyo, but was born and raised in Kisumu where his late father Ezra Owiti Gumbe was at one time the Major of the City. Before his accession to the mayoral position the senior Gumbe had served the Kisumu Municipal Council for many years before retirement as the town’s director of social services.

A professor of engineering, Prof Larry Gumbe’s name has been associated with the ODM ever since the days of the NDP and LDP. He was at one time the chairman of the NDP and has always remain in the background as the head of thin-a-tank group in all the parties headed by the Prime Minister Raila Odinga ever since the latter breakaway with the late Michael Kijana Wamalwa after protracted struggle for power in Ford-Kenya.

Prof Gumbe. head the Center for Democracy and Good Governance. an NGO, which has a lot of influence within the ODM hierarchy and has remained the man behind the scene at the ODM headquarters all these years,

Gumbe’s declaration of the intention to contest for the post of the ODM Secretary General came in the wake of unconfirmed rumors making the round that Prof.Nyong’o has fallen out of favor with “Agwambo”

Kenya: Rejuvenating KANU will be a blessing to ODM

Guys,

I do address these statement to ODM supporters: I hope you will understand me correctly: ODM is not Raila. I am not supporting any candidate, neither I am proposing any person to lead by force. But my concern is this; the ODM has a lot of enemies, both within and outside the party. This has lead some ODM leaders to fight among themselves and they are now almost splitting the party right down in the middle just before 2012 presidential election. Some of these leaders have a bone to pick with the prime minister (Raila Odinga). I just do not understand how Raila do owe these people?. Kenya is a democratic country so we say. That means each everyone of us Kenyans have a right of only one vote during any presidential election not 2 or 3 or 4. `Wakina Ruto: how many votes did they give Raila in 2007?. Each gave Raila only one vote. But these guys (Rutos) have taken all Kalenjins as Idiots, they are the ones who want to gain from their votes.

These events reminds me of the old golden days when the Pharises used God as an excuse to avoid helping their families(Mark 7:10, 11). They thought it was more important to put money in the temple treasury than to help their needy parents, although God´s law specifically says to honor fathers and mothers( Exodus 20:12) and to care for those in need (leviticus 25.35-43). These rift valley Mps are just putting grains and money in their own treasury at the same time blaming Raila for all the problems facing the province. I think leaders are elected to help their people solve problems, not to blame problems and leave them unsolved, only or use somebody as an excuse. Ruto and Uhuru Kenyatta called for Harambe and collected money for Mau forest dwellers where did the money go to. Please Mr. PLO Lumumba can you also sent your agents to investigate these conmen too. It is illegal to con people in Kenya.

We know today that preconceived notions, unchallenged assumptions, folk wisdom, and the like, especially under competitive conditions, are dangerous, because they give their own particular color to all information that comes in and stifle any real understanding of the actual situation. Well if you do not believe me just read the today´s standard (16.01.2011), Moi is rejuvenating KANU and he has asked his rift valley tribes mate to ditch ODM and join KANU.

Moi is still speaking the old days drunkard words: Kenya needs only one party which should accommodate all tribes and all in one, given jobs regardless of his tribal background etc. This man had power for 24 solid years; during that time all golden roads were leading to Baringo, and all projects and good jobs were given to party loyalist only. So what have changed?: Well we know today that Tunisia is blasting and I do thank: both president Obama and Sarkozy(french president ) who have denied the Tunisian running away dictator a safe heaven in their countries. Moi should consider himself blessed to be born in Kenya and not in Tunisia. But Running away from ODM to KANU or UDM will not save Ruto, neither will it bring food on the poor kalenjin´s table. Kenyans need a solution and whoever will solve their problem is the right man for the top post. So running to the coast, Nairobi, Rift valley speaking bad things about the prime minister is not the solution. Some of these guys are even now jealous about the prime minister being appointed as the mediator in the ivory coast problem. And they do also criticize that. By the way what has prime minister done to younger Wamalwa?. And why is younger wamalwa every time when he opens his mouth speaks only bad things about Raila?. Or the boy is suffering from Alzheimer´s disease? .I hope Kenyans close their brains and take no notice to these empty debates.

Kenya: KALENJIN leaders in Kisigis land defend Raila Odinga against malicious accusations

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town

DESPITE the highly over dramatized concocted information about the impending mass exodus of Kalenjin from the ODM to greener pasture elsewhere, the popularity of the Prime Minister Raila Odinga among the ordinary members of that community remained intact.

All the hullabaloo have come about following the realization, by some of the MPs from the region, particularly those who were now classified as the renegade ODM, that they likely would lose their seats in the forthcoming general election.

The hostility, between Raila Odinga an the Kalenjin ODM MPs, is also fueled by the fact that money has covertly been poured into the region by some invisible forces who are said to be deploying every trick in the books to block Mr Odinga’s grand match to the State House come the year 2012.

The residents of the South Rift region with two Counties of Kericho and Bomet still maintains that Mr Odinga is the upright and straightforward leader, under whose presidency, Kenya could achieve the meaningful changes in governance.

The popular saying among the residents of the South Rift region, the majority being members of the Kipsigis a sub-tribe of the larger Kalenjin ethnic groups and the most populous, is that Mr Odinga should reshuffle the cabinet, especially his side of the coalition government, bring on board Hon Musa Sirma the nominated MP and make the Road Minister Franklin Bett his running-mate in 2012 presidential election.

The majority of the residents of the South Rift viewed the existing sharp political differences, between Mr Odinga and the suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto, as being “personal” and as such cannot drive the entire community out of the ODM which is the party of choice in the region.

This particular community appeared to have a distaste for the migratory kind of politics, which they say is being introduced into Kalenjin politics by Hon William Ruto, the suspended Higher Education Minister, including those of forming amorphous alliances such as Kamatusa and KKK.

The youthful and much confused Kalenjin MPs in the 10th Parliament are not engaged in the war of attrition with Mr Odinga for nothing. Rathere, they are working hard to ensure that they had shares in the election logistics and millions of shillings alleged to be floated around for grab by anti-Odinga elements with and outside the coalition government.

The Kipsigis have also dismissed the idea, recently coined into Kenya’s politics, that demand that the old guards must vacate political leadership and concede it to the youth. The proponates of this policy are Willian Ruto and the Saboti MP Eugene Wamalwa. .But the two had no past good credence to make suggestion owing to their dubious past and non contribution to the second liberation efforts that resulted in the new constitution. The two have been the happy riders in the past.

The blame games, being heaped on Mr Odinga by the disgruntled Kalenjin MPs, were termed as “Fitinas malice’ by James Maritim, a Litein politician in Bureti district. He exonerated the Prime Minister on accusation that he had a hand on the picking up of the Ocampo Six, who are to be tried in the Hague, on suspicion of having masterminded the post election violence of 2008.

Mr. Odinga, he went on, is not a prosecutor nor is he operating from Ocampo’s offices in the Hague. The blame games are even being extended to cover cases of land grabbing and other criminal offences committed by individual long before Mr Odinga joined the coalition government with President Kibaki as one of its principals. “This is rather childish, said J. Koech of Kapsoit in Belgut.

Koech was explicit that Mr Odinga should elevate his hardworking colleague Hon Franklin Bett to the vacant position of the Deputy Leader of the ODM and party’s presidential election running-mate next because the Minister had remained steadfastly in the party and maintains unshaken loyalty to Mr.Odinga.

Meanwhile it was learnt that many youthful and resourceful individuals in the South Rift region have come forward with intent to contest various ODM positions and the branches, counties and national election from the. This is a clear reflection that the party is still very popular among the Kipsigis people.

And when the election proper time comes up the current MP will face some of the toughest opposition ever seen in this region. We shall put forward candidates of their equal strength and ensure they go into political limbo. Some of the MP are said to have gone under ground not to be seen anywhere in public in fear of having confrontations with members of the public.

Kenya: Nyatike constituency is on the move and may soon realize the fastest development activities

Reports Leo Odera Omolo In Karungu Bay, Migori County.

One of the recently created administrative districts, in greater southern Nyanza, which is currently on the move, is Nyatike.

Laying in the far end of the former greater Southern Nyanza and bordering Tanzania on the land and Uganda in Lake Victoria, Nyatike, is an area which is previously considered as the most backward in the region. It has had its own parliamentary constituency for the last 16 years ever since its separation from Ndhiwa in 1992.

In the first multi-party election, in 1992, Tobias Ocholla Ogur won the seat for the first time on a Ford Kenya party ticket. The party was then led by the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Ogur, however, quickly made an about turn and crossed the floor back to the ruling KANU, and lost in the seat in the consequent by-election.

The NDP and then LDP supported and fronted the late Tom Onyango a petty kiosk trader in Migori town who carried the day.

The NDP and later LDP had swept the board clinching all the parliamentary and civic seats in Southern Nyanza.

In the general election of 1997, Ocholla Ogur bounced back and recaptured the seat of the defunct LDP party led by Raila Odinga. He successfully defended his seat in 2002, but performed dismally in the 2007 general election, and was beaten hands down by the youthful Edick Omondi Anyanga who appeared to have turned the previously sleeping constituency around.

Nyatike district previously had two administrative divisions, namely Karungu-Sori and Maclder. But it has now five division comprising of Got Kocholla, Kaler and Muhuru Bay Divisions. The area has a full pledged DC, DO I and district officers manning all the five divisions plus district heads of departments and all the government offices are functioning well.

Today Nyatike provide electricity supplies to all primary and secondary schools, market places and all the institutions. The area has the best rural feeder and access roads to the envious of other neighboring constituencies. This is perhaps because of the abrasive youthful and aggressive MP who has kept members of the local CDF committee on its toe.

On the education front, Nyatike beat all the other primary schools in the entire Migori County in last year CPE exam coming on top. This is due to the competitive nature of teaching initiated by the MP who is reported to be dishing out special gifts to teachers who performed well. The prizes include new suits, bicycles and other gifts. Earlier last year the MP had requested for teaching experts from other parts of the country who went to Nyatike for the purpose of carrying out refresher course for teachers through seminars and workshops.

Fishing and fish trade is the main economic mainstay in the constituency, which borders Tanzania on other main land and also a small portion on the Lake Victoria and Uganda in Lake Victoria. The disputed Migingo fishing island is believed by Kenyans to be part of Nyatike district, though Uganda had seized and posted its marine police to man the island to the chagrin of the local residents, who sees the government of Kenya for having failed them and abandoned them in the hand of hostile foreign occupying force.

The MP who is known to his peers as Omuk Lela {Rhino} has persistently demanded both in the August house and outside parliament that the Uganda security personnel said to be harassing about 500 Kenyan fishermen operating on the Migingo Island be driven out, and always scathingly criticized the government for its handling of the Migingo saga.

The shortage of fresh water for life will soon be over in Nyatike. Plans are under way for a major water project to be taken u by the UNICEF that will see the water piped from Lake Victoria and spread into the villages in Sori, Obware Secondary School and other nearby villages.

The water supplies will go beyond the constituency boundary and even benefit the residents of the neighboring Ndhiwa district. The residents are also said to be Liaoning with tourist operators in Nairobi with the view to ensure plans are earmarked for tourists to visit attractive tourist points in the region.

The colorful ceremony was held at the Kenyatta’s Sports Ground, which is located right in the middle of Kisumu City and witnessed by thousands of enthusiasm crowd.

The gathering attracted several cabinet ministers, who included Gerald Otieno Kajwang’{Immigration}’, James Aggrey Orengo{Lands} Prof Anyang’ Nyong’o {Medical Services, Assistant Ministers MPs, civic leaders and representatives of special interests and ODM stalwarts.

The elders from the Kalenjin community, who included Mzee Jackson Kibor, Mzee Said Chepkeitany from Eldoret, Mzee Eliud Koech, Mzee Kipsugut Lelei from the Kipsigis Laibons, Lt. Gen. {rtd} John Arap Koech, the retired former deputy CGS and others assured the Prime Minister Raila Odinga of the community unswerving support and backing for his quest for the presidency comes 2012.

Mzee Koech is the patron of the Kipsigis Council of Elders. He told the gathering that Raila Odinga was the most promising leader in this country and as such should be given the chance to have a shot at the presidency comes the year 2012.

Mzee Jackson Kibor, in a brief speech, during a meeting with the Prime Minister in his Rural Opoda Bar Opuk home in Bondo, said the perceived political differences between the Prime Minister Raila Odinga and the Eldorey North MP William Ruto, who is the deputy leader of the ODM party, are personal and have got no bearing nor they could tilt the Kalenjin voting pattern in the next general election. He said the ODM members in the Kalenjin region have confidence and faith in Raila Odinga whom they viewed as the most forthright, trusted who is committed to the services of the Kenyan people.

Gen Koech, who appeared of late to have taken over the mantle of ODM political leadership in the entire Kipsigis region, said the community had no problem with Mr Odinga, and would definitely vote for him in bloc comes the year 2012.

Mzee Eliud Koech, the patron of the Kiosigis Council ODM Elders, urged Kenyans to adopt the political slogan of “One Kenya. one people”, as the unifying symbol. .Kipsugut Lelei, an elder from the <Laibon community, who was born in Gwassi during the time when the Kiposigis, Nandi and Tugen Laibons were vanished to the remote Gwassi Hills part of Southern Nyanza by the British Colonualk administration, and who speaks Dho-Luo fluently, said Raila Odinga is the right person to be the next president due to his total commitment to the services of all Kenyans irrespective of their tribes, color, religion and creed.

The Kisumu ceremony was also addressed by the Kuria elder, John Magaywa, who promised that his community will go along with other neighboring communities in voting for Raila Odinga to be the next President of the Republic of Kenya.

The gathering was also addressed by the Abagusii chairperson of Council of Elders, Mzee Kenneth Matundura Araka, who told the Kenyans to ensure that political differences do not deter the PM from winning the 2012 presidential bid.

Also in attendance was Dr. Wangari Gidhinji, who rep[resented the Kiukuyu Council of Elders who told the meeting that his community had Raila Odinga deeply placed in the peoples minds.

Six MPs from the Rift Valley, led by Assistant Minister for Energy Magerer Lang’{Kipkellion}, Dr. Lorna Laboso {Sotik} Musa Sirma {nominated} Beatrice Kones {Bomet and Chepkitony {Elkeyo North} were also in attendance.

Guessing from what transpired in Kisumu and Bondo, the perceived belief that Raila Odinga is no longer the darling of the Kalenjin voters, was brushed aside, judging from pledges made by the community leaders in their brief addresses. The Prime Minister therefore still commands the highest following among the Kalenjin in both the North and South Rift regions. This time the delegates had travelled as far as from Pokot, Turkana and Tugen communities.

Kisumu City was the beehive of activities, which saw most of the hotels in town filled to capacity with the visitors for the ceremony which was held on Monday 27th December 2010.

Kenya: Luo-Nyanza MPs faces total rejection for complacency by the electorate in 2012

INVESTIGATIVE Report By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City.

DESPITE of the availability of millions of shillings of government revolving funds disbursed through the local Constituency Development Committees CDF} very little achievement has been made on the ground in terms of development activities in Luo-Nyanza to the satisfaction of the electorate.

This could be apparently attributed to the recent protracted agitation for the constitutional dispensation, which appeared to have consumed much time of the legislators and other leaders from the region at the expense of development activities.

The party of choice is the Orange Democratic Movement {ODM} which is led by Raila Amolo Odinga, but the latter has vowed that this time around he would not bail anyone out of the political quagmire, and that each and everyone will have to carry his or her own cross.

This is a burning issue, which is going to have a negative impact in the rating and proper assessment of the MPs from the region’s performance in the 10th Parliament.

It could have the negative impact on the MPs-re-election comes the year 2012. Those who have performed dismally will pay dearly for their lackluster performance and may be shown the exit door in 2012.

A survey conducted by this writer indicated that a good number out of the current 21 MPs from Luo-Nyanza are on their away out of the August House, though some of them had made sterling performance and contributed immensely towards national politics at the expenses of their rural constituencies. These MPs, however, will have their names go down in the history books as among those who contributed immensely towards the making of the new constitution, which was promulgated by President Mwai Kibaki on August 4, this year after the grueling referendum voting campaign.

However, a number of MPs from the region will definitely lose their seats at the next polls. These will be replaced by newcomers, a move which in itself will be a heavy blow to the community these gentlemen represented in the August House, because as various constituencies will have inexperienced MPs as he new representatives.

The allegations and rumors involving the misappropriation and embezzlement of CDF and other government revolving funds meant for rural development would take toll on the MPs for most of them have failed tin their responsibility of ensuring the proper disbursement and use of the funds, creating the rooms for the massive looting.

The MPs are facing various accusation among other things for poor supervision of development activity in their constituencies, which are being undertaken by the CDF money, for allowing their political cronies to manage the revolving funds, though most of those sitting in the money disbursing boards have no experience of government accounting system and the mismanagement of the CDF money, working in cohort with some unpatriotic suppliers of materials used in the construction of the CDF funded projects and for allegedly inflating the cost of materials supplied to the CDF projects for the purpose of creating room for kick-backs.

Ten out of the 21 Luo MPs have, however, maintained good score-cards for active participation in development activities in their constituencies, and for not missing out in carrying out inspections of the CDF funded projects in their constituencies.

Leading the pack of this category of MPs from Luo-Nyanza is the abrasive Assistant Minister for Internal Security Joshua Orwa Ojode who is the MP for Ndhiwa in Ndhiwa district who despite of busy schedules in matter relations to security has never lost one single chance of visiting his constituency Ojode is always home at the weekend either addressing seminars and workshop of local leaders or inspecting CDF funded projects while carrying out Harambee fund drive for one cause or the other, but all socio-economic related schemes and projects.

Thieving CDF local committee teams have no foot in Ndhiwa, and any reported mis- appropriation of funds irrespective of its size could result in instant arrest and prosecution of the suspect culprit.

Ojode is followed in the category of hard-working MPs by Eng James K.Rege of Karachuonyo the man who is said to be down to earth in hard-working for his constituents to reap the maximum fruits of independence, though the poverty index is the area is the highest.

Rege represented a highly sensitive rural constituency where political awareness of the constituents is said to be the highest. But Hon Rege is managing his constituency very well.

This is the only constituency in side Luo-Nyanza where all members of the CDF local committee are intellectuals and people with vast experiences in government accounting system making the disbursement of the funds much easier with no record of embezzlement or high inflated prices of the material meant for the construction of CDF projects.

Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo is also credited for having place tight control over the CDF funds budgeted for socio-economic projects.

The aggressive MP is always at home over the weekend making personal supervision of the CDF funded projects and other government revolving funds, His working relationship with local CDF fund committees is said to be cordial and warm. The MP stands a better chance of retaining his seat comes the year 2012.

Kasipul-Kabondo MP Oyugi Maguwanga is another MP whose performance at the constituency level is said to be perfect. He is reported to have initiated school bus buying for almost all the boys and girls secondary schools in the region, at times is acting as the school supervisor, which has resulted in several lazy head of primary and secondary schools taking to their heels when they reported to their places of work late and found the MP sitting in their office awaiting for explanation he or she was late in reporting to work.

Kasipul-Kabondo is among the ten constituencies from Nyanza Province which were recently recommended by the recently disbanded Andrew Legale led Interim Independent Boundary Commission for sub-division into two parliamentary constituencies. May be the sub-division of the constituency into two could have the negative on Maguwanga due to divided and realignment of sub-clans as the MP is expected to lose some of his supportive sub-clans to the newly created Kasipul East or Kabondo constituency.

It is, however, too early to make proper and accurate assessment of the outcome of the constituency subdivision. The general views held by many of the constituents is that Mag7wanga a man of moderate education has done well that all the previous MPs.

In Ugenya, the Lands Minister James Aggrey Orengo, is said to have done well this time around making his ever presence at the constituency felt. The lawyer-cum-politician is said to have gone through very drastically transformation from that of youth and heckler to a true statesman.

Reports on the ground say Orengo could easily retain his seat in either Ugenya or in the newly created Ugunja constituency. His popularity is on the upward trends, and this could as well as due to his constantly working close with the Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In the far ends if the greater Southern Nyanza region, the most aggressive and youthful Nyatike MP Edick Omondi Anyangam though a first time MP has made an impact in the region hitherto considered as the most backward rural constituency.

And within only two and half years in Parliament Omondi Anyanga has already made an impact not only in Luo politics, but on the national political scenery, making regular contribution in the debates in the House, and also frequently visiting Nyatike and supervising the construction of new road network under CDF funds, schools and even at time conducting Harambee fund drives for the various needy communities.

Nyatike is located among the Kenya-Tanzania border on both the mainland and in the Lake Victoria. This is the same district which owns the controversial Migingo fishing island in Lake Victoria, which for the last two years or so has been the subjected of the heated argument between Kenya and Uganda.

The majority of the residents of Migingo Island hail from Nyatike. The Migingo Island is located only about 16 kilometers from the mainland Nyatike district and Hon Anyango has always been in the forefront fighting for the fishermen to be given fair treatment by both Kenya and Uganda and insisting that the island belonged to Kenya. Anyanga stands a better chance of retaining his parliamentary seat comes the year 2012.

In the same neighboring, Migori constituency Mp John Pesa is another hard working MP whose re-election to the August House could be rest assured.

In Gwassi constituency in Suba district Hon John Mbadi star is deemed due to intensive communal squabbles over the place where the district headquarters should be established after the sub-division of the former Mbita constituency into two one Gwassi and the other taking the name of the old Mbita.

The dispute is pitting the Minority Kaksingiri sub-clans and the majority Wagassi sub-clan. The Jo-Wagassi are happy that the new district has already been gazette as having been established at Magunga, while the jo-Kaksingiri wanted it the D.C. offices and the offices of the County Council retained at Gingo near Sindo trading Center. The dispute almost ended in bloody acts of violence. Hon Mbadi who is a member of the majority Jo-Wagassi is seen by the minority Jo-Kaksingiri is siding with his Jo-Gwassi people.

This kind of petty dispute and the fact that more candidates comes fro the Gwassi side each time there is election, Hon Mbadi’s otherwise promising political career could be sealed to the dustbins of history comes the year 2012.

In Mbita, the Immigration Minister Gerald Otieno Kajwang’; appeared to be safe in his Mbita constituency unlike in the previous general election when then legislator seemed to have lost touch with the electorate. This time around Kajwang is always at home over the weekend consulting his constituents over prevailing local issues and supervising the disbursement of CDF funds.

Kajwang of them “Bado Kuna Mapambano” lyrics is doing pretty well at the constituency level after dispelling the rumors that he would opt for the Homa-Bay County Senate seat. But he later changed his mind, and declared that he would defend his Mbita seat comes the year 2012.

The poorly managed constituencies include the Kisumu Town East, Kisumu Town West, Kisumu Rural, Rangwe, Uriri, Rongo, Muhoroni, Nyando, Rarieda, Nyakach and the worse is Alego –Usonga.

In Alkego-Usonga, the CDF money has made no significant change in the face of this most backward constituency. The MP is Edwin Ochieng’ Yinda, who is also a Mombasa based businessman and who it is being alleged, is always stays away from the constituency.

MP representing those areas which are classified in this article as the poorly managed will have an up-hill task to retain their seats at the next polls unless they quickly changed tact.

He is perhaps the most credible high profile aspirant to have come forward from Ndhiwa district, and declared his interest in the covenanted position within the County recently created under the political dispensation.

Alila now joins the former Kasipul-Kabondo MP, William Oloo Otula, whose campaign for the same seat hit the ground last month. Born in a political family, Hilary is the second son of the late Mr. Nelson Onyango Alila, from Rapedhi area of Kanyikela Location in Nyarongi Division, Ndhiwa district. UGANDA: MUSEVENI’S NRM PARTY GIVES REBEL CANDIDATES TWO WEEKS TO SURRENDER OR QUIT

Reports Leo Odera Omolo

THE NRM-leaning independent candidates have been given two weeks to negotiate with the party and stand down for the official flag-bearers,the government owned NEWVISION reported today

“For the next two weeks, we are going to engage in intense dialogue to resolve the independents problem…. the point is that we are dividing the vote and giving opportunity to the minority to seize one or two elective offices,” the NRM secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, announced yesterday.

Mbabazi announces the deadline for independents. Right is former NRM electoral commission official Lydia Wanyoto

Mbabazi told journalists at the NRM Secretariat in Kampala that “In the unlikely event that we don’t resolve the issue, the NRM will have no choice but to go out to campaign for itself and those who are its flag bearers, he added.

Mbabazi, however, acknowledged that some of the independent candidates have genuine issues which they expressed by registering as independent candidates.

“Some had reason to be dissatisfied and they took the decision to be independent. This is an obvious issue that the NRM must address and we find solutions even if it wasn’t for elections. We will continue to find solutions for our in-house problems,” stated Mbabazi.

Though Mbabazi noted that individuals have a right to register and stand on their own merit, he cautioned that they must know that they are dividing the Party vote and giving opportunity to the minority to be voted for.

The debate of independent candidates has of recent dominated the Party meetings including the caucus.

The NRM scrapped the electoral colleges in selecting candidates to avoid the problem of members resorting to standing as independent candidates. But the problem still persisted.

Most independent candidates however insist that they still love the party and will support President Yoweri Museveni in the 2011 general elections.

Mbabazi on Tuesday held a meeting with NRM MPs where he reportedly tried to convince the independents to step down.

A source that attended the Tuesday meeting said Mbabazi expressed concern over the dangers independents are likely to pose to the Party during the 2011 general elections.

Independents reportedly rejected the proposal to step down, saying the party primary elections were marred by malpractice, and their petitions were never given due attention by the Party electoral commission.

“They refused even when the secretary general tried to convince them that they were dividing the party votes. They said the president had promised to meet them before nominations but the meeting did not take place,” the source told the Newvision.

Out of the 75 NRM MPs who lost in the primaries, 52 have been nominated as independents.

Kabarole Woman MP, Margaret Muhanga, who was nominated on an independent ticket reportedly, said independents do not hate the party. She said they registered as independents because their petitions were not properly handled and the elections were not free and fair.

Over 600 petitions were filed with the NRM Electoral Commission after the primaries. On November 18, fresh NRM Party primaries were held in the disputed areas and right flag bearers were announced.

However many of the petitioners felt their grievances were not “properly” handled by the commission and vowed to stand as independents.

During the nominations for the 2011 general elections, many NRM members who failed in the party primaries defied their party and sought nomination as independent parliamentary candidates.

Caucus treasurer, David Bahati, said that during the NRM caucus meeting, members discussed strategies for the coming campaigns and how to dialogue with independents.

Talking on phone from Kibuku, water state minister, Jennifer Namuyangu, vowed not to step down for her rival Saleh Kamba, saying ‘he is a self imposed flag bearer’.

“Step down for who? Let them (NRM) first show me the real flag bearer. I am the flag bearer of the people they deleted from the register,” Namuyangu said.

The caucus resolved that Mbabazi holds another meeting with the independents to iron out the matter.

Last week, Party spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said independents should return their party cards and hand over party offices. However, Ofwono also acknowledged that in some areas, the Party primaries were not fairly conducted.

In Kanungu district, Geoffrey Tumwebaze, the LC3 boss, returned his party card to NRM and stood as independent for the district LC5 chairmanship. This was after he was defeated by Josephine Kasya.

Yesterday Mbabazi denied knowledge of any coalition of the NRM leaning independent candidates countrywide to campaign for themselves.

He said that some of the independents may not be genuine. “A strong NRM supporter to divide the strength of their party? Would they be ready to take responsibility for that kind of outcome?” Mbabazi mused.

Mbabazi said that the NRM is the only party that has fielded candidates in all the constituencies and new candidates alone are 140. He said that the old candidates are 97. He said that of the NRM candidates running against the District woman MP, only 32 are incumbent and the 80 are new entrants. He boasted that in Kanungu alone, only the NRM had 59 candidates’ at all elective levels unopposed.

He admitted that there were shortcomings in conducting the NRM primaries, but attributed it to them being a new thing in the country.

“The NRM primaries were the first in the history of Uganda to be held on the basis of adult suffrage, and therefore it was a new experience to us,” Mbabazi said.

Kenya: The change we do not need…

from odhiambo okecth

Tegi,

At no time have I defended Ruto’s inclusion in ODM. I am on record to have written a scathing attack on the quality of leadership at ODM and their tainted past.

I am sorry if you did not read that.

I have never pretended to even want to be called comrade; whatever it is. I have always been Odhiambo T Oketch and so I will remain. I am one who never believes in empty ideology. I am never one to shy away from posting what I believe in and I have been consistent to this from childhood.

My postings will always be guided by my love for Kenya. This love for Kenya will make me live in Kenya forever. I will never ran away pretending to be a fugitive or a refugee just to be able to kiss some white ass.

Adding tags such as comrade to your names makes one an imperial hostage. It simply means nothing to me.

From: Comrade Tegi Obanda

Odhiambo Oketch,

you are such a comedian. Whom are you telling this? Are you coming to realize for the first time in your life that Ruto is a looter? When Ruto was one of your ODM Pentagon chiefs–were these facts you are now gleefully pointing out not apparent to you?

When we were pointing these facts to you in 2005, 2006, 2007, didn’t you defend Ruto as the greatest visionary Kenya has ever produced?

What a hypocrite! How many thieves and looters are in the ODM leadership even as we speak? Have you written long articles attacking them? Oh no, you wait until they fall out with ODM, then you cry out thief! thief! Moi is only bad when he is not in your party. Ruto is only bad when he has fallen out with your party.

Countryman (I can’t call you “comrade’)—let me give you one simple advise on how to develop a minimum level of credibility in politics: Develop a clear set of of principles to guide your thoughts and action. Then stick to those principles rain of shine or light or day.

Kenya: Quit now or else be ejected out of ODM, Raila tells the party’s rebel MPs

Political News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City

KENYA’S Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga, who is also the ODM supreme party leader, last week came out and made a bold no nonsense statement telling his fellow party MPs who, were not satisfied with being members of the ODM, to quit now.

He told a meeting of the party National Executive members, held at the Bomas of Kenya last Friday, that the party leadership will not be intimidated.

The PM, however, restrained himself from name – calling, but political pundits were quick to draw the conclusion that Raila was referring to a group of rebel MPs, particularly those from the Kalenjin community who are aligned to the suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto.

Furthermore, it became apparent that Mr Odinga’s remarks were in apparent reference to the party Deputy Leader William Ruto, who is the MP for Eldoret North, and his cronies who have lost no chance in recent past threatening to decamp from the ODM.

Some of the MPs immediately made a rejoinder saying there was no point in having them pushed out of the party and yet they have long left on their own volition

Most of the Kalenjin MPs allied to Ruto had skipped the Friday NEC meeting.”We do not want there to be any individual who wishes to leave the party to stay on. If one is tired of being an ODM member or leader they are free to quit,” said Mr Odinga.

Thre hard-hitting statement by Raila followed the recent events in which a group of pro-Ruto politicians in the Rift Valley had ganged up and sponsored the coup that reportedly ousted the national chairman of the United Democratic Movement, Lt Gen {rtd} John Arap Koech

Gen Koech, who is being accused of being a staunch supporter of Raila Odinga, was replaced by a perennial parliamentary election loser in Buret constituency, in the County of Kericho, Joseph Arap Chirchir, the retired former long serving national chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers {KNUT}.

The take over, which was described by Gen Koech as “illegal and unconstitutional is widely believed to have been sponsored by Ruto and his brigade so that the suspended Higher Education Minister could use the UDM as a fallback party in case the worse comes and his strained relations with Raila goes out of possible reconciliation.

Odinga told his colleagues that “the ODM is an institution and as such cannot be derailed on its grand match to the State House come 2012 by few individuals. Even if Raila Odinga himself quit the ODM, the party will still remain intact.”

Raila has for sometime been quiet and refused to be drawn into controversies with his fellow party MPs in spite of repeated provocative public utterances by the likes of Ruto, Joshua Kutuny, Isaac Ruto and other MPs allied to Ruto. This may be so because the prime Minister, who for many years was known as a radical and non nonsense politician with sharp tongue, has transformed himself from a radical politician to a true statesman, always weighing his words before opening up.

Reports making the round in both North and Southern Rift regions, however, indicating that nearly all those ODM MPs who have already publicly expressed their intention to quit the party for a green pasture elsewhere, have people of their equal political strength strategically positioned by the political vacuum positions should they choose to decamp from the party that had sponsored them to Parliament.

The party loyalists are said to have been engaged in secret recruiting missions, which have already netted powerful individuals in various constituencies in readiness to take the rebel MPs head-on, should the choose to quit prematurely before the dissolution of the current parliament, which in accordance to the new constitution would require such MPs to relinquish their parliamentary seats to be followed by the by-elections.

However, the controversy surrounding the latest Kalenjin politics in the Rift Valley has gone a notch higher. And this could derail Ruto’s planned soft landing onto UDM.

The retired President Daniel Arap Moi who is believed to be still the darling of the Kalenjin has cautioned the community against forming more political parties, saying this would fuel more disagreement.

Mo,i who was speaking at the Kericho High Bible School last week end, dismissed the leaders fronting for the formation of new political parties, and urged them to either remained where they are or rejoin the party of independence KANU to strengthen it in preparation for the year 2012 general election.

Moi also urged the Rift Valley leaders to refrain from making enmities with other communities as this could increase their alienation. He made it clear that Kalenjin leaders seeking to form another political party did not have the interest of the residents at heart. Instead he urged them to rejoin KANU party in en mass, the party that would sufficiently care for their future political needs

The retired President was reacting to the recent declaration by MP allied to the suspended Higher Education Minister who is currently facing various criminal court cases related to the allegations of Land frauds, that they would soon decamp ODM and form another party that William Ruto will use to seek the presidency in 2012.would soon going to be unveiled before the end f the year.

Gen Koech, the one was who ws instrumental for Raila Odinga, mounted a vigorous campaign against President Kibaki in the South Rift. The former Deputy Chie of the General Staff, late contested the Ainamoi parliamentary seat in Kericho, but was allegedly rigged out twice by Ruto and his cronies. He quickly jumped out of the ODM boat and reorganized the hitherto run down and sleeping UDM and was made its national chairman.

Ruyto is alleged to have planned to use the UDM as a fallback party in the likely event of him and Raila falling out of favor with each other. But it later became difficult to manipulate the party leaders with the Gen on the steering seat of the party. Means and ways had to be found of kicking the general out first, in favor of some insignificant Ruto political surrogate, so has to pave the way for his {Ruto’s} soft landing back to the party.

For some time Ruto has been flirting with the UDM Secretary General Francis Ole Kamwaro with whom they had appeared together on the same platform at the various public gatherings hinting some thing fish was on the offing.

Those who reacted to Raila’s comment included Emngwen MP Elijah Lagat, Konoin MP Dr Julias Kones,Baringo Central MP Sammy Mwaita. They denied that Ruto had not interfered with the ODM activities though he is still the party deputy leader.

Lagat added that ODM would be a party of choice for everyone if its leadership avoided the dictatorial tendencies – – a replica of what was witnessed during the one party rule in Kenya.

“There is nothing new in Raila’s statement. It does not hold any water. He has indicated so in private. The only difference is that he has made public his wish”, said Lagat.

It is widely speculated that Ruto and his allies are only buying time before decamping to the little known UDM. But the law says that if Ruto and his allies were to formerly quit the ODM now, they would lose their parliamentary seats in line with the Political Parties Act under the new constitution.

Since his suspension from the Cabinet on October 19, Ruto has indicated that he would give his supporters new political direction by the end of this year.

But last week Raila, who of late is reported to be restraining his party officials from ejecting Ruto and his cronies from the party, hinted that the ODM elections would be held early next year in order to weed out rebels from the party hierarchy and structures.

“Even as we grapple with the new reality of a marriage of convenience with our competitors, PNU, we must not lose our focus.” Said Raila.

He scathingly criticized the ODM rebel MPS who opposed the new constitution. Ruto and his partners vigorously campaigned against the new constitution during the referendum voting, which the majority of voters endorsed on August 4,2010.

OPM branch chairmen countrywide attended last Friday’s meeting. It was also attended by over 70 MPs who included the Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, the Secretary General Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o,National chairman Henry Kosgey, Co-operative Development Minister Joseph Nyagah Tourism Minister Najib Balala,Sports Minister Dr Paul Otuoma.Public Service Minister Dalmas Otenoi,National Heritage Minister William Ole Ntimama Roads Minister Chris Obure, Minister Mohamed Elmi,Lands Minister James Orengo and the arty National Organizing Secretary Hassan Joho.

But group of Kericho town based politicians have called on rebel ODM MPS to quit and vacate their seats now, so that by elections to refill the vacant seat could be held,

Led by a nominated Kericho Municipality Council member, Nicholas Tum, the group said ODM is gaining a lot of strength in the region despite of being stabbed at the back by the rebel MPS. “We now dare them to resign and vacate their seats. We shall fill the vacant seat with the new faces of politicians”. said Tum, adding that those underrating the ODMN strength in the South Rift are doing so at their own peril.

Uganda: NRM has ordered all its independent candidates to surrender their membership cards to the party

Reports Leo Odera Omolo

ASPIRING candidates who belong to the NRM but were nominated as independents should return their party cards, the party’s deputy spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo, has said.

Tom Butime, Fox Odoi and Urban Tibamanya

Commenting on the fate of independents yesterday, Ofwono said candidates who hold party offices at local level, should also hand over, as the party constitution demands, the government owned NEWVISION reported this morning.

“We expect the party chairman in the district to write to them and demand that they return the cards and resign from office just as it happened in the elections in 2006.”

He said the NRM treats independents as members of any other party “and NRM would be right to de-campaign you. Independents open the window of opportunity for the opposition to win.”

However, he acknowledged that because party primaries were not ‘fairly’ conducted in many areas, many members had genuine reasons to stand as independents.

“As all this goes on, the best that can be done is to persuade them to drop the idea. This is what the Hajji Moses Kigongo’s committee is doing,” he said.

Party electoral commission vice- chairman Prof. Elijah Mushemeza said: “Those people have left the party. It is their decision and you cannot have authority over them. We shall support our flag bearers.”

The NRM scrapped electoral colleges selecting candidates, to avoid the problem of independent candidates but it has persisted.

Though standing as independents, members insist they still love the party and will support President Yoweri Museveni in 2011.

“The final verdict should be made by the people, but we love our party,” state minister for water Jennifer Namuyangu, who is standing as independent for Kibuuku Woman MP said. She promised to campaign for Museveni, but to oppose “self-imposed flag-bearers.”

Soon after the primaries, President Yoweri Museveni said the party would not tolerate independents, but said all genuine cases of electoral malpractices would be addressed.

He said there could be re-runs if the complaints were valid.

Accordingly, the party set up a committee headed by Vice-chairman Hajji Moses Kigongo to investigate irregularities in the primaries. Over 600 petitions were filed.

On November 18, fresh party primaries were held in the disputed areas and flag bearers were announced. However, many of the petitioners felt their grievances were not “properly” handled.

The independent candidates nominated on Thursday included ministers Jennifer Namuyangu and Dr. James Nsaba Buturo, Jacob Oboth, Ruth Tuma, Joyce Babiha, Nalugo Ssekiziyivu and Margaret Muhanga. Others are Tom Butime, Sanjay Tanna, Rose Munyira, and Jane Alisemera. At least seven independents had been nominated on Thursday. They are Isaac Lwanga, (Rubaga North), Musa Bwanika (Makindye East), Judith Matovu (Kampala), Daniel Muwonge (Nakawa), Eliajah Jjemba (Kawempe South), Nsubuga Kijjambu, ( Kawempe South) and Allen Kisege ( Rubaga North).

Kenya & Uganda: Museveni’s invitation to Kenyan politicians causing suspicion and anxiety

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City.

KENYANS are increasingly getting jittery about the latest development whereby the Ugandan head of state President Yoweri Museveni has been issuing special invitation to selected individual Kenyan politicians to visit his country for some undisclosed reasons.

The latest to make such visit is the retired President Daniel Arap Moi who flew into Ugandan capital, Kampala last Tuesday at the invitation of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

Moi flew back home last Thursday after a two days visit during which time he had his host Museveni were involved in a series of secret talks whose contents remained unclear to the general public in both Kenya and Uganda.

The circumstances of these series of visits to Uganda by Kenyan politicians, particularly those who hails from the Rift Valley is causing anxiety, especially within the communities living along the Kenya-Ugandan borders.

It has become a common knowledge that such visit did not augur well with one community, the Luos taking it into account that this particular community is grieved by Museveni recent seizure of the controversial Migingo Fishing Island in Lake Victoria, which is part of the Luo-Nyanza.

Museveni seized the island and even allowed his security personnel and Uganda Revenue Authority to host their national flag on Migingo. Kenyans felt the Ugandan leader was increasing becoming belligerent and hostile to the Kenyan community, following his remarks about the mad-Luos.

This suspicion by the community has been aggrieved further by the fact Museveni list of Kenyan VIP consist of those politician known or classified as the Anti-Luos in Kenya.

This particular community has the longest border with Ugandan in the economically and commercially important Lake Victoria. The latest flirtation between Museveni and selected Kenyan politicians has therefore raised suspicion with members of the Luo community reading malice.

Moi, the latest VIP to visit Uganda is known to have marginalized the Luo during his twenty four year misrule, which had also brought Kenya down to its knees economically following the looting an destruction of various public institutions.

Uganda’s presidential election are due on February 18,2011 and Museveni has been criss-crossing the country in his campaign and reportedly neglecting all but the most urgent government business

Sources in Kampala have hinted that while in the Ugandan capital, Moi held discussions with his host and top ruling NRM officials before returning home. The series of meetings were held behind closed doors.

In the recent past, Kenyan politicians, especially those reported to be interested in running for the 2012 presidential race have been trooping to Uganda to meet with the Museveni and his ruling NRM officials

Details of these series of meetings have not been made public fuelling speculations and rumors about their agendas.. And so the suspicion are also high that such meeting have some element of covert operations against certain Kenyan communities.

It is not clear why President Museveni is conducting his charm offensive with Kenyan politicians and the Rift Valley leaders in particular. Rift Valley has the longest borderline on the land with Uganda’s Eastern region

“Museveni is currently very busy campaigning for sixth term of office ever since 1986. He is said not even doing the government work so for him to invite Moi for thee days in the middle of his-election campaign means this must be very important for him,” a source in Kampala has said.

Museveni is known to have come to Moi’s aid and rescue during his last reign power in Kenya, especially during the clamor for the multiparty political system in Kenya as opposed to the hitherto monolithic patter of governance on which the Kenya’s famous professor of politics had thrived on for a long time. Moi is believed to have received covert backing from Museveni during the first multiparty general election of 1992 and thereafter in 1997.

Moi’s visit comes shortly after the suspended Higher Education Minister and Eldoret North MP William Ruto, had attended thr launching of Museveni’s campaign and NRM manifesto in Kampala on November2, 2010. Ruto was accompanied by the Belgut Mp Charles Keter and Moi’s former roving ambassador and at one time nominated MP Mark Too, alias Bwana Dawa.

Ruto and his entourage met Museveni at Entebe State House before going to the Serena Hotel, Kampala to attend the launch of Museveni’s re-election manifesto.

During the rally Ruto was introduced as the deputy leader of the ODM and Kenya’s representative, though here at home, the Eldoret North MP had ceaselessly distanced himself from the party’s day to day activities and has hinted his intention of ditching the party for green pasture elsewhere.

Mr Too had earned his nickname “Bwana Dawa” during the Moi’s regime for his ability to cut political and business deals as an intermediary between Lonrho and the National Resistance Movement in 1985 in the final days of bush war that brought Museveni to power.

Lonrho is believed to have lent an airplane to the NRA and helped the movement to acquire guns from friendly African governments, which the Museveni rag-rug guerrilla army used in ousting former President Milton Obote from power.

Ruto’s visit was preceded a week earlier by a faction of KANU leaders team headed by the party deputy leader Gideon Moi, the favorite son of the former President Moi. He was accompanied by the party’s Secretary-General Nick Salat when they met with Museveni. This particular meeting took place in eastern Uganda at Nambole Stadium where the two represented KANU during the NRM party elections.

Reports emerging from Kampala, says that during their visit the two KANU officials extended invitation to President Museveni to attend KANU’s 50th anniversary celebrations initially scheduled for next month, but now understandably put off indefinitely.

Three weeks Assistant Minister for Land Bifwoli Wakoli and the MP for Saboti Eugene Wamalwa, both from Western Province and known to be nursing presidential ambition were in Uganda’s Eastern town of Mbale where they campaigned for Museveni in total breach of the Parliament Standing Order that demand MPs travelling to a foreign country to first inform the Speaker of the National Assembly.

The two Kenyan legislators joined Uganda’s Prime Minister Prof.Apollo Nsibambi drumming up support for Museveni on the campaign trail.

In April Museveni hosted the Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Kampala where the two discussed, among other things, the controversy surrounding the disputed Migingo Island .But so far, Kampala still hold grips on the island and there is not signs of letting it free to return under Kenya’s rule.

Former President Moi was last in Uganda on January 26, this year as the Chief Guest during the celebrations marking the anniversary of the NRA’s capture of power in Kampala in 1986. The grand old man was awarded the prestigious Nalubale Medal by President Museveni for his contributions to the restoration of “civilized and peaceful political order” in the region.

The Medal is for civilian activists who have contributed to the political development of Uganda either through armed struggle or otherwise.

Kenya: Will Raila Odinga be our Gandalf?

Arrows and shields
BY FWAMBA NC FWAMBA

In the Prof J.R.R Tolkien’s fantasy trilogy; The Lord of the Rings, the role of one character Gandalf the grey, who later becomes Gandalf the white is very conspicuous. Gandalf belongs to the group of wizards, the wisest and most knowledgeable creatures in the middle earth.

Unlike Saruman; another wizard who attempts to get the ring of power for himself, Gandalf sticks to his mission of helping the middle earth rid itself of the ring of power by helping in assembling and leading the team to destroy the ring of power in the same chasm inside the crack of Mount Doom where the ring was forged. The ring of power has a history of bringing down great leaders and kings including Isildur; whose heir is Aragorn camouflaged as Strider carries the duty of reinstating Isildur’s lost glory. Gandalf’s efforts to inform Saruman about The whereabouts of the ring turns out to be a calamity for its later discovered that Saruman has defected and joined Sauron; the dark lord to claim the ring.

The ring is in the shire, the land of the Hobbits. Gandalf is faced with the challenge of ensuring that the ring is destroyed before his former ally Saruman or the main antagonist Sauron land their hands on it.

Kenya is a county at the crossroads now. The political challenges that face us to day are akin to the conflicts that bedeviled the middle earth. Kenyans have attempted for long to bring about change. All efforts have been futile because of the greed of the leaders that have hypocritically come together in the name of destroying the establishment of impunity and corruption have ended up being corrupt and unreliable. They have always instead just like Saruman been converted and become allies of impunity and subjects of the same ills they purported to oppose.

Kenya has gone through turbulent waters since the days of colonialism. Every political step in Kenya has been a make believe to the Kenyan masses that time for national redemption has finally come. The chronology of the Kenyan leadership starting from colonialism has always been a disappointment. In Kenya’s war for independence, the freedom fighters fought to return the land that had been taken away by the British colonialists. When freedom was finally granted, the country was optimistic that with an African leader all Kenyans were going to have better lives with equal opportunity to access education and resources compared to the previous regime which had been oppressive, racist and discriminatory against Africans.

It emerged that their celebrations were in vain for the new African establishment became no different from the practices of the British colonialists. Fertile lands that had previously been taken by the colonialist were then taken over and shared among the African leaders that had taken over the reigns of power.

The ordinary Kenyan who had fought so hard for independence became a disappointed person. It emerged that those who were landless during the colonial period remained landless; those who were lucky got small portions of land where they stayed as squatters. It was not forgotten that those who had taken power led by Jommo Kenyatta had claimed that they wanted change for an ordinary Kenyan African who was lacked opportunities because of racism and other forms of discrimination. It was evident that the African government substituted terms but continued with the oppressive ways of the colonialist.

It was not lost to Kenyans that terms like racism were replaced with tribalism. Settlers were replaced by African land grabbers. It’s known to Kenyans that it was under the African regime that those who spoke out their mind like Pio Gama Pinto, Tom Mboya, Argwings Kodhek and JM Kariuki had their lives cut short because of having alternative views on governance.

In 1978, Moi became president and people who had witnessed Kenyatta’s misuse of power and practices of tribalism thought that with change in the leadership, things were going to be different. It however turned out to be more disappointing that Moi declared that he was going to ‘fuata nyayo’(follow Kenyatta’s footsteps).Under the nyayo era, Moi perfected the art of tribalism, corruption and impunity. Under Moi’s leadership, democracy was crushed and detention without trial; a law that had been put in place under Kenyatta’s regime became more effective than ever.

It’s during the Moi era that many pro democracy activists and university student leaders like Tito Adungosi and Wafula Buke were jailed over trumped up charges. Many activists disappeared without trace. It’s during this same regime that saw Kenya’s first Vice President and doyen of opposition Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was put under house arrest. Under the same regime more political assassinations and mysterious deaths occurred. It was during this regime that Bishop Alexander Muge, Dr.Robert Ouko and many others died under suspect circumstances.

The atrocities committed under the Nyayo regime saw progressive politicians like Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Ahmed Salim Bahmariz, George Nthenge, Masinde Muliro, Philip Gachoka and Martin Shikuku to team up and form the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD).It was a new dawn for Kenya when after pressure from the international community Mr.Moi repealed section 2(a) of the then constitution of Kenya which ushered in multiparty politics.

Greed engulfed the country, for every politician saw an opportunity to ascend to power since Moi was very unpopular. Many opposition parties were formed. After the mysterious death of Masinde Muliro at the Jommo Kenyatta International Airport three months to the general election,

Ford split into two factions Ford Kenya which was led by Jaramogi with headquarters at Agip House and Ford Asili that was led by Kenneth Matiba that moved their headquarters to Muthithi House (now Occidental plaza), the Democratic Party (DP) and the Social Democratic Party were formed and registered. Young people like Ruto and Jirongo saw an opportunity to become politically relevant. They formed Youth for Kanu 92’ thereby saving Moi’s regime from extinction by mobilizing the youth vote.

The divided opposition driven by greed for power lost to Moi. The same situation was repeated in 1997.The opposition fielded many presidential candidates who included Mwai Kibaki of the Democratic Party, Michael Kijana Wamalwa of Ford Kenya,Raila Odinga of National Development Party and Charity Ngilu of the Social Democratic party. The opposition lost again and the country continued wallowing in the culture of impunity.

With new wisdom acquired from lessons in the past election losses, in 2002,the opposition united to defeat Moi and his ‘project Uhuru’.The optimism of Kenyans was renewed. Most Kenyans believed that with the exit of Moi, the country had been saved from all the ills that we had fought against.

That was never to be for after one year, the government was grappling with corruption allegations. A mega scandal akin to the Goldenberg that had occurred during kanu’s dark days happened; the Anglo Leasing. It dawned to Kenyans that the greed for power and wish to occupy Moi’s shoes was the driving force for the opposition unity. Kenyans discovered that it was greed for power and money and not good governance that had caused the opposition to unite to defeat Moi and ‘project Uhuru.

In 2007, it emerged that both the incumbent led by Mwai Kibaki and the opposition led by Raila Odinga had been in government. It was declared to be the mother of all battles. The tight race between the two presidential candidates led to a disputed result.

I contend that Kenyans didn’t know what the post election violence was all about. It was about greed for power. 2012 is beckoning and we face the same challenges that Kenyans don’t have a leader who wants to create a respectable state. Kenya needs a Gandalf like figure who will not get entangled into power struggles. Kenya needs someone with an opportunity to be president but because of being selfless will choose not to seek presidency, but will assemble a new generation of leaders who will ensure the country has a new beginning. Kenya needs someone to sacrifice, someone who is above temptations for power, someone with the interest of the nation at heart.

If Moi and old Kanu establishments represent Sauron and Kibaki is Saruman, is Raila going to sacrifice his presidential ambitions and be our Gandalf?

Kenya: A formidable alliance to force Raila out of Rift Valley has been launched

Political News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town.

A new mega political alliance aimed at cutting Raila Odinga down to size ahead of the year 2012 general election is on the offing.

The heavily moneyed group consisting of the Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, the Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta, Tourism Minister Najib Balala, and the suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto is said to have set a side a huge sums of money running into billions for this purpose.

The money is to be used in popularizing the group’s political activities, mostly in the expansive Rift Valley.

The colossal amount of money is also reported to have been set aside for a propaganda campaign. Certain scribes working with the the media houses, women’s gropes, and political operatives, have been recruited and handsomely paid for their part in misinformation and concoction of stories that could work for the downfall of the Prime Minister.

A testimony to the scheme hatched by the group to undercut the Prime Minister Raila Odinga was seen in two major Harambee fund drive held at the week end. One of the Harambee meetings was held at Sosiot in Belgut and the second meeting was held at the Kericho Secondary School in Ainamoi constituency. Both meetings realized over Kshs 10 million and the principal donors were Kalonzo Musyoka, Uhuru Kenyatta, Najib Balala and William Ruto.

From now onwards, similar Harambee meetings will be held on a weekly basis in all areas where the Prime Minister Raila Odinga still maintains the lead and stronghold with the purpose of scuttling his grip hold on certain communities in the region.

A source in Kericho has confided to this writer that a colossal amount of money has been set aside by the group for the purpose of generous hand outs to the youths.

Other strategies being put in place to financially empower William Ruto to enable him to conduct weekly Harambee meeting in all the eight parliamentary constituencies within the County of Kericho and Bomet. Substantial amount of money is also set aside to undercut the die-hard Raila supporters including MPs from the region.

The coming weeks will see more fund drives being conducted in Buret, Bomet, Sotik and Kipkellion constituencies. These are the places where the group says there are still some element of Raila’s supporters and pockets of resistance.

But Raila’s silence, not reacting to some of the malicious and falsified accusation and unfounded allegation against him by the Ruto camp, has playing in his favor. He is seen as behaving like a true statesman by avoiding childish utterances commonly associated with his opponents.

The Buret MP is the Road Minister Franklin Bett, while the Bomet MP is Mrs Beatrice Kones who is an Assistant minister for Home-Affairs. Kipkellion MP is Magarer Lang’at who is an Assistant minister for Energy, and the Sotik Mp is Dr.Joyce Laboso.

The four have maintained unswerving loyalists of the Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his ODM party.

The battle field is the most populous Kipsigis sub-tribe of the larger Kalenjin ethnic groups. This community is the largest single voting unit with the voting strength estimated to be in excess of 1.3 million voters.

In the year 2007 the community voted for Raila Odinga’s presidential bid on a man-to-man basis enabling the ODM to swept the board harvesting all the eight parliamentary seats in the region.

During the August 4 referendum voting for the new constitution, the community, however, changed its alliance and voted for the Reds, which was led by the suspended Higher Education Minister William Ruto.

But what later emerged is the fact that the majority of the referendum votes could be credited to the retired President Daniel Arap Moi who had joined the Ruto group in opposing the new constitution. But within the community itself, the majority of the conservative voters have yet to forgive William Ruto for having brought down Moi’s KANU regime in 2002 when he collaborate with Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga and formed a formidable Narc Kenya force that forced Moi out of the office.

There is a quiet undercurrent of political maneuvers going on among the Kipsigis elite to the effect that the community would not be happy in any association linking the Kipsigis with the Kikuyu community. This is the very community, which the Kipsigis had single handedly fought for years starting with the tribal clashes of the year 1992-93, 1996-1997 and the 2008 post election violence.

In all past tribal skirmishes between the Kikuyu and Kalenjin over land disputes in areas like Kipkellion, Londiani, Molo, Kuresoi, Elburgon and Mau area, the Kipsigis who had formed the bulk of the dreaded Kalenjin Warriors of 1992, which launched full scale operations simultaneously in all fronts against those communities, had supported the clamor for the reintroduction of the multi-party system of politics in the country against the then monolithic one party system.

Hundreds of the internally displaced persons of those skirmishes are still living in makeshift camps in Central Province, parts of the Rift Valley, and fears persist that there could be the renewal of similar tribal clashes. The ordinary Kipsigis people have no confidence in their immediate neighbors nor is there any iota of mutual trust between the two communities. The planned mega alliance pitting Kalenjin and then Kikuyu communities together in the same mega political group would be an up-hill task for its proponents.

Therefore the war of attrition between William Ruto and Raila Odinga is viewed by many level minded Kipsigis people as personal, and perhaps due to shortsightedness on the part of the Eldoret North MP who seemed to be in hurry of being an over all political king of the rift Valley.

Former President Daniel Arap Moi, recently working in cahoots with Ruto during the referendum voting campaign, is seen as a political marriage of convenience, which could fizzle out and melt into the thin air at any time. But Moi remains a power to reckon with in the Kipsigis region.

Those who knew Moi well in his character say the retired President has yet to forgiven Ruto for his role in bringing his government down in 2002. And also for having vigorously campaigned against his three sons in the 2007 general election, which saw the Professor of politics favorite sons loose the Baringo Central seats, which the family has held ever since its inception in 1962. Moi’s sons, who lost the elections, were Raymond Kipruto Moi who contested the election in Rongai constituency, and Jonathan Toroitich Moi, who contested and lost the Eldama Ravine seat. The chances of reconciliation between Moi and William Ruto are said to be the remotest.

But if such a move could succeed in cutting Raila Odinga down in size, it is obvious Moi would readily give his blessing to such a scheme against the man – – the same Raila Odinga who worked in cohorts with William Ruto and succeeded in bringing his twenty four year reign of power to an abrupt end in 2002.

Moi is said not to be so happy with Raila in recent moves to have his personal fortune in the multi-million shillings investment of Kapgatich Tea Factory in Olenguruone in Mau West scuttled for the purpose of saving Kenya’s largest water Tower the Mau Forest Complex.

Moi is also said to have read malice in Raila’s involvement in mass eviction of Kalenjin illegal squatters from Mau Forest, most of them the people whom he had personally settled in the area and duly issued them with the land title deeds. The majority these squatters being from the Kipsigis, but with a sizeable number of Moi’s own Tugen sub-tribesmen from Baringo region.

Other Moi insiders would be rather comfortable working with his former right hand man Nicholas Kiprono Kipyator Biwott rather than William Ruto. And an elaborate plan has been hatched to persuade Biwott to abandon his National Vision Party of Kenya, which is also making major inroad in the South Rift and rejoin KANU to strengthen it in readiness for the 201w general election. But the adamant powerman Biwott could hear of this plan and has flatly turned down the request for him to rejoin the mama na Baba party of independence.

All in all there seem to be no clear winner in the current war of attrition that is going on in most part in the Rift Valley. Two other senior politician in the region who are equally earmarked to be cut down to their original sizes are the Agricultural Minister Dr. Sally Kosgei, and the Industrialization Minister Henry Kosgei.

Dr Sally Kosgei is the MP for Aldai a cosmopolitan constituency, which is located in the western part of the North Nandi district and whose inhabitants consisting Teriks, a small concocted sub-tribe with both Maragolis and Kalenjin blood. The Teriks are also known as Nyang’oris or Tirikis.

Raking it into account, given that Dr Sally also has a mixture of Luhya/Kalenjin blood relations, she would be hard nut to crack by the Ruto’s brigade. But Henry Kosgey, who is also like William Ruto having a mixture of Nandi/Kipsigis blood could be a sitting duck and an easy prey for the Ruto troop soldiers, though the Minister’s pockets are said to be heavily lined making his garrison not to be for an easy overrunning by in Ruto’s planned onslaught on Raila’s loyalists in the Rift Valley.

The Ruto – Raila war in Bomet constituency could ends up in favor of Moi and not the Eldoret North MP. The same end is expected in Buret where Moi’s right hand man Paul Sang {Chaman Buch} is scheming against the Road Ministr Frankli Bett who is perceived to be one of the Raila loyalkists in the region.

Ruto’s spanner – boy Charles Keter in Belgut would, however, survive this time. He survived through Ruto’s intervention when he was badly trounced by the former Corporate Director and Sales Manager of Chemelil Sugar Company Justice Kemei, but Ruto prevailed at the ODM headquarters which gave in and cancelled Kemei victory certificate, which was later issued to Keter despite of the fact that he had lost the election to his rival Kemei.

Keter has had no easy relations with the top management of the multi national foreign owned tea companies, most of them situated in Belgut, and appeared to be spending most of his parliamentary serving the interest of his mentor Ruto with the very least activities in his constituency. He is viewed by the electorate as someone who has already abdicated his duties and r3esponsibikity.This has given the leeway to the former Mp for the area Charles Kirui a former Finance Assistant Minister and the most astute Kipsigis politician to come back into the picture.

Another Ruto spanner boy is the youthful Ainamoi MP Benjamin Lang’at who had inherited the seat from his murdered elder brother, the late David Too, who died in a hail of bullets fired by an enraged police traffic officer in Eldoret following what many people viewed as “Love Triangle” incident shortly after being sworn in as an MP.

Lang’at too would be ousted by either Moi’s die-hard loyalist or an ODM aspirant. Come the year 2012. In Kipkellion the youthful Assistant Minister for Energy Magerer Lang’at is still strong enough to retain his place on ODM ticket now that the vast constituency would like be split into two before the 2012. Another Ruto’s politician is the outspoken Konoin MP Dr Julius Kones, who the residents say stands a very little chance of seeing an inside of Parliament comes the 2012 general election.

In Chepalungu, Ruto’s strongest ally in Kipsigis land, and the outspoken Chepalungu MP Isaac Ruto, is likely to be one of the 2012 first causalities in the region. The ODM is slated to retain this seat through another aspirant of.ODM still maintains a sizable following in Sotik constituency and the seat currently held by Dr Joyce Laboso appeared to be safe.

The perception and widespread rumor, that Raila Odinga has already lost as far as his influence in the South Rift is concerned, could be faulty and not true. But it is also good to say that both the Kericho and Bomet counties are currently under the invasion of hundreds of prophets of doom and political brokers hunting for handouts, cannot be ruled out.

The power-brokers of Kericho town are like angry wild bees. They have driven out of the town politicians, especially MPs, and have made leader abandoned all the posh hotels in town. Even the politicians driving home from Nairobi to the various destinations in Western Kenya like Kisii and Kakamega are said to be skipping and avoiding stop-over in Kerich town due to the ever presence in hotels by the power-brokers-cum-beggars.

Armed with information that Raila’s camp is not familiar in the politics of giving handouts to the youths, Ruto and his handlers are said to have set aside huge sums of money for the purpose of giving handouts to the youths and changing them to their side.

Observers and pundits in this region maintains that Ruto and his team will not succeeded in hounding Raila out of the region because of the time limits. By this time, the group should have already declared their new political party of affiliation. Therefore the battle for the South Rift is still far from being won by either Ruto or Raila’s camp and is still widely open for all.

Obote’s cousin Akaki is campaigning for Museveni re-election in northern Uganda

Writes Leo Odera Omolo

PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has said opposition parties are too weak to provide effective leadership and ensure prosperity.

Museveni, who was on the last leg of the Lango sub-region campaign trail told his supporters at Awila Primary School, six kilometers from former President Dr. Apollo Milton Obote’s home, that only the NRM could guarantee peace and prosperity.

The President welcomed the late Obote’s cousin, Obadia Akaki, and about 400 other people, including a district councillor, Oola Malakwal, who crossed to the NRM.

Obote’s cousin, Obadia Akaki, chatting with Museveni in Apac on Tuesday. Obadia defected to NRM and started campaigning for Museveni

Akaki hugged Museveni and kept a tight grip for about one minute.

In an earlier interview, Akaki, who was wearing a cap with Museveni’s photo, said he had joined the NRM much earlier, and that Museveni had been giving him assistance.

“Since my brother Obote died, Museveni has been taking care of me,” he said, adding that he supports the NRM because of its good programmes.

Drawing from an analogy of cooking fire stones, Museveni said it is only the NRM which has developed the three stones that can keep the pot in place.

He said the three fire stones are good politics, which does not divide people according to religion, tribe or sex, a developing economy, which had collapsed during Amin’s regime, and the capacity to develop and keep a disciplined army.

“Uganda has had many problems and it is only the NRM that has managed to contain them and keep the country steadily growing,” Museveni told his cheering supporters.

He advised NRM supporters to give a warm welcome to people crossing from the opposition in order to strengthen the party.

Apac district party chairman Ogwang Odyero and NRM parliamentary flag-bearer Jovino Akaki thanked the Government for the programmes it has been extended to the area and promised over whelming support for Museveni in the coming polls.

Flanked by the NRM party vice-chairman in the north, Sam Engola, the President enumerated the achievements of the NRM government, including ending the LRA insurgency.

He also said the Government had been able to disarm the Karimojong cattle rustlers and improve enrolment in primary and secondary schools.

Museveni, who addressed two other rallies at Kwania and Koleenumerated, said his government had also improved health services by building health centers.

He said the approach to Prosperity-for-All under the National Agriculture Advisory Services had been changed because of many complaints over the distribution of the materials.

He said under the new strategy, the smallest unit becomes the village from the previous parish unit.

Museveni explained that everyone above 18 years in a village would be included in a village development cell, which would take decisions on what investment to make and the distribution criteria.

“This is good because when anyone cheats everybody will know who is cheating,” he said.

DR. Ian Clarke, who has been nicknamed Busuulwa, was among candidates that were nominated to contest for the chairmanship of Makindye Division yesterday.

Clarke, an Irishman with dual citizenship, is the chairman of the International Medical Group.
He is the proprietor of International Hospital Kampala (IHK), an upscale hospital in Namuwongo, a Kampala suburb.

Clarke arrived at the nomination centre at 7:30am and was nominated at 2:00pm.

Ian Clarke being carried by his supporters after he was nominated

Clarke, who is contesting as an independent, said his wish was not to be associated with political parties but to work for the community.

He looked composed as electoral officials checked his documents.

Addressing journalists after his nomination, Clarke said he would repair roads, equip health centers and promote general development in the division.

His campaign slogan is ‘good roads, good health and development’.

“Our people are suffering without good health facilities and roads. My leadership, if I am elected as LC3 chairperson, will be to address these social challenges” he said.

“I will also improve garbage collection and water coverage, and ensure that other social services reach local people,” Clarke added.

A resident of Muyenga hill, Clarke said his inability to speak Luganda would not stop him from communicating with the masses.

Clarke, whose convoy contained over 15 vehicles, faces stiff competition from the incumbent, Moses Kalungi, who is due to be nominated today.

Others nominated for the same seat are Livingstone Kizito (FDC), Kasule Namungo, Brown Charles Lwanga, Robert Kironde and Peter Ssentongo.

Clarke was born in Ireland, where he trained as a general medical practitioner. He moved to Uganda in the late 1980s to set up a community hospital.

After starting Kiwoko Hospital, Clarke established IHK to cater to the city’s emerging middle class in 1996.

The hospital also runs a nursing school on its premises at Namuwongo. Clarke writes a weekly column in New Vision.
