I AM NOT INTERESTED IN PRESIDENCY DECLARES ATWOLI

From: JEFF

BY JEFF OTIENO

Combative Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli has declared that he has no ambition to aspire for Presidency come 2012.

Speaking to the press on telephone the Cotu Secretary General said the main priority of Cotu is to ensure that reforms are achieved within a short time frame.

Atwoli who has lined up rallies across the country’s major towns to agitate for reforms, was early this week put on the spot light in a section of the press by a group alleging to be affiliated to the workers body who distanced themselves from his current reform crusade saying they were never consulted.

“I’ve no time for paper tigers, masquaraders and hirelings who are being used by anti reformists to frustrate Kenyans not to get a new constitution” Atwoli thundered.

The said group are also reported to have questioned the funding of the big rallies which he also dismissed as “cheap”.

“Cotu is a vibrant outfit with genuine and committed members who are contributors and everything else we are currently engaged in was sanctioned by relevant organs and therefore whoever is questioning legitimacy of our pursuit should be treated as an outsider paid to derail our course which to me is a game in futility since you cannot stop river Nile from flowing” he quipped.

“The dirty tactics of anti reformists are known in this country and Kenyans should be prepared for blackmail, diversionary tactics and intimidation from the said clique”, he said during the interview.

“Currently they’ve put me under microscope but I want to tell them theyre wasting their time, I remain undeterred until Kenyans get a new constitution” he added.

COTU NOW LINES UP COUNTRY WIDE RALLIES TO PUSH FOR REFORMS

By: JEFF OTIENO
date Tue, Oct 20, 2009 at 3:22 AM

COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has announced that he has scheduled rallies across the country to push the coalition government to give Kenyans a new constitution.

Speaking to the press in Kisumu today, Atwoli said, “The two principles President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga seems not to be serious”, and are abusing the intelligence of Kenyans. “Kibaki and Raila have got the capacity to give Kenyans the much yawned constitution within a blink of an eye but unfortunately they are cagey”, he posed.

This weekend the COTU Secretary General and his brigades will go to Machakos town for a rally to agitate for comprehensive reforms. The following weekend they will go to Nyeri, Embu,Kisumu, Nakuru among other major towns before they conclude with what is expected to be the mother of all the rallies at Muliro gardens in Kakamega on 26th December 2009.

On raging debate of post election violence suspects, Atwoli said, the two principles should handle the matter with caution or else they will plunge the country into chaos as witnessed in the last General Elections.

“If it is a question of going to the Hague then Kibaki and Raila should lead the pack” Atwoli said during the interview. “How genuine are we to victimize small people yet leave the two who made Kenyans to go for each others throat”, he quipped.

On whether he is interested to contest the Presidency in 2012 as being rumoured, he remained none committal. His critics have been reading political maneuvers in his current vigorous advocacy to make Kenyans have a new constitution before April next year.

GIDEON MOI POSTPONES HIS NYANZA KANU MEETING

From: JEFF
Date: Wed, Oct 14, 2009 at 4:19 AM

By Jeff Otieno

KANU National Vice chairman Gideon Moi has re-scheduled his visit to Nyanza Province until next week.

Gedion whose meeting was slated for (tomorrow) Thursday this week confided to this journalist that he has decided to hold the crucial meeting next week due to what he termed as “inevitable official pressing issues”.

All the 21 KANU branch officials had been summoned to Kisumu by the patron Tom Alila to brain storm on issues bedeviling the former ruling party and to also finalize plans to welcome the guest.

During the marathon 6 hours meeting yesterday, inside sources confided to the press that tension was high and the party officials were sharply divided and at one time had to be restrained from going physical with each other.

A camp allied to finance minister and KANU chairman Uhuru Kenyatta read mischief in the whole arrangement to host the resilient Gedion Moi.

Gedions camp however down played the sharp division and instead urged party members to be more focused on reviving the party instead of jostling for cheap publicity and supremacy.

Kisumu KANU branch office is said to be at the centre of controversy with a clique of officials sympathetic to other rival parties being accused of benefiting from the party’s properties (modern rental kiosks) which generates close to Kshs.400,000/= instead of committed and genuine officials.

Gedion who is also the son of former president Daniel Arap Moi has also declared his presidential ambitions come 2012.

CLERGY-MAN IN SEX DRAMA.

BY JEFF OTIENO

A top clergyman name withheld was last weekend caught in a compromising situation with a wife of an intelligence officer in a Kisumu Hotel.

The Bishop who happens to be related to the intelligence officer is said to have been dating the young woman for now almost a decade.

Family members have always prevailed upon the officer to ignore claims that the clergy relative has been dating his wife.

Apparently working on a tip off, the officer name withheld took a plane over the weekend to Kisumu and laid abrasive network with taxi drivers and hotel attendants culminating to a barbaric scenario where the two were caught in the act.

The officer according to sources who talked to this writer confided that he dangled his official identity card and a pistal to gain entry into the room where the two were having their good time.

At inception, the hotel attendants were reluctant to allow him into the room, but thanks to his nature of work and the arsenal he dangled he managed.

A scuffle ensued in the room and the officer in apparent bid to attract public sympathy raised an alarm and a hostile crowd promptly gathered.

The enraged crowd tried in vain to lynch the two but thanks to the intervention of the officer they were salvaged and taken to the police station.

The police officers at the station however later released them since in Kenya’s constitution there’s no provision to cater for such offences.

Enrout to the station, the charged crowd compelled the duo to walk naked and at one time forced them to kiss each other. The bitter and marauding crowd even chained the two as they braved the sweltering heat in a walk which lasted 15 minutes before the police intervened and bandled them in a white saloon car.

The duo were battered seriously and blood could be soon marooning their faces and chests. The officer has however been applauded by observers for restraining himself despite the provocation.

KIBOS SUGAR HAILED A HEAD OF PRIVATIZATION

BY JEFF OTIENO

Farmers and transporters in the sugar industry have hailed Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries for being in comformity with what they’ve yawned for years in terms of their demands.

The fast growing miller with a workforce of 2700 workers has come up with an aggressive policy frame work which has sent other millers to go to the drawing board.

Resilient Kibos Sugar pays a staggering Kshs. 25m to farmers and transporters per week in transport and cane deliveries.

As privatization beckons around the corner, key industry players views the miller to be having a head start. With a capacity of 1650 tonnnes per day, Kibos is the only miller which has conformed with a ministerial directive to install a weigh bridge close to farmers to avert spillage and unnecessary hefty transport costs.

In the entire country it’s only the giant Mumias Sugar which manufactures electricity with a mark of 28 megawatts to the national grid and has also finalized ambitious plans to manufacture mineral water in its quest to diversify income.

Few months to come Kibos will produce 25 megawatts out of which 22 will go to the national grid and 3 for its own consumption. Already they produce 3 megawatts for their own internal consumption.

“We’ve hired a foreign consultant firm to do the study and soon we will hit the road,” said Raju Channan the company Managing Director.

With the newly launched ultra modern multi million weigh bridge in Awasi Nyando District, the company has sent cold shivers in the spines of other millers and other industry players who view their abrasive approach as reminiscent to “a coup”.

Currently they pay farmers an impressive Kshs.3, 050 per tonne weekly. In a desperate bid to compete them, other millers a fortnight ago followed suit and increased their payment from a paltry Kshs.2,700/= to Kshs.2,850/= per tonne albeit with little change in the litmus.

With most of the millers owing farmers whooping millions of shillings and with the Government having no quick remedy in place in terms of rescue mechanisms, Kibos is set to call shots at least for now.

Some three sugar board members names withheld recently confided to this writer that even the controversial moribund Miwani Sugar factory should be given to Kibos Sugar to revive it as per their initial bid where they were found to be the highest bidders.

“What’s the basis of having huge chunks of land lying fallow for ages yet our people are dying of hunger and we’ve got potential investors who have shown commitment and capacity to run it,” they argued.

“Our local politicians should give investors time to operate devoid of coercion,” they thundered.

Kibos is ready to offload 30% shares to the locals given the chance to run the once vibrant miller.

Currently, the once giant firm is deeply embroiled in endless controversies with one local influential politician with no idea to run a sugar company, said to be interested through a consortium, no wander the stalemate to resuscitate it for now a several years to the chagrin of locals.

Although its machines have been dismissed by experts as out dated and defective, Miwani has got thousands of nucleus, no wander the perpetual wrangles to own it.

With its ultimate revival, it will open flood gates economic wise for the natives of Kano and its environs.

Most natives of Kano and in the neighboring Kalenjin constituencies are now opting to plough their lands to plant the lucrative sugar cane which they say is labour intensive but of higher value compared to other crops which only benefits middle men.

KIDERO DEATH THREAT CASE KICKS OFF

BY JEFF OTIENO

A case in which two people have been charged in Butere court over claims that they threatened to kill and also extort money from Mumias Sugar Managing Director Dr. Evans Kidero at long last started.

The two Mustafa Juma and Lusule Ole Sangale have been charged that on 12th December 2008 they threatened to kill the C.E.O and further demanded Kshs. 200,000 from him in order to avert everything.

Mustafa Juma who is the first accused stunned the court once again when he demanded for an adjournment for the third time on grounds that he was unwell and needed treatment. The second accused Lusule Ole Sangale however remained mute during the entire proceedings.

He has been in police custody for almost six months after he had jumped bail. Last month when the case came up for hearing Mustafa demanding that his bail plea be granted but the prosecution stood ground arguing that his papers for the same were dubious to warrant a reprieve.

All the seven witnesses were in attendance and Dr. Evans Kidero the complainant, was the first one to be in the witness box.

Three witnesses testified and the remaining are slated to testify on 25th Sept 2009 during second hearing.

GUARDIAN BANK CUSTOMERS UP IN ARMS

By Jeff Otieno

Customers and staffs at Guardian Bank a cross the country are bitterly protesting with the way the Managing Director Shetty Vasant Krishnakumar is handling them.

The C.E.O who is based in the Nairobi head office is alleged to have borrowed bureaucratic antics which culminated to his unceremonious exit at Prime Bank recently.

According to three Senior Managers who talked to this writer on strict condition of anonymity, shettys high handedness has reached alarming levels with prominent customers who have witnessed his arrogance and bureaucracies resorting to closing their accounts.

These staffs further went the full throttle of alleging that he is one of the worst racists they’ve ever seen in the banking industry adding that he has been only promoting cronies of his origin and colour instead of qualifications and sterling record of performance.

Shetty who is ever glued in the internet watching barbaric sites even during working hours is also alleged to have been shown the door at Prime Bank courtesy of his involvement in Triton saga.

Born in 1947 and working on a work permit, Shetty’s son is also being probed by authorities over claims that his son got a Kenyan citizenship dubiously.

“This man has even usurped the powers of branch managers across the country, and they must plead with him to okey a customer’s cheque of a paltry Kshs.100,000/=,” the Managers alleged.

Efforts to get comments from him (Shetty) were fruitless; his mobile phone was off air the better part of the day at the time of going to press.

BRIBERY CLAIMS ROCKS KENGEN

By Jeff Otieno

Kenya Electricity Generating Company Ltd (KENGEN) has allegedly been rocked by a massive scandal at its KIPEVU station.

In a terse letter dated 10th August 2009 to the Managing Director Eddy Njoroge, Witerose Security Systems Ltd Chief Executive Polycap Ocholla alleges that the station Manager Eng. Abel Rotich has been demanding bribes from him in order to be kept a float to continue doing a contract with the company.

Ocholla said that he started doing business with KENGEN way back in 2003 and emphasized that the relationship has been very cordial.

Torrid ties started in August 2007 when Eng. Rotich wrote a letter of harmonization demanding that Witrose reduces its number of security guards from 44 to 36 irrespective of letter of award Ref: PROC.475/DM/WK dated 26th April 2007 for the ongoing contract. And second letter of harmonization Ref: OM/KPV/117/10/AR/e, dated July 26th 2007.

In the harmonization letter Ocholla alleges that Eng Rotich was suggesting that he reduce the actual guards as per his letter by 11 guards, but he continue invoicing KENGEN as per the letter of award and that the amount of Kshs.10, 440 multiplied by the 11 which is equivalent to Ksh.114, 840 to be shared between them on fifty fifty basis in exchange of a cheque worth Kshs.619, 440.

“Since I knew this would compromise the security of the station at the expense of our image by deploying less guards in very key sensitive positions and considering the negative impact should theft occur, we have never been in good relationship,” the letter read in part.

Ocholla said that he has been at the mercy and has suffered of late in the hands of this manager who at times colludes with his juniors to stage manage theft to portray his company as inept with a view of denying him business.

“Several alleged theft cases of copper cables in KIPEVU have been confirmed to be stage managed by Rotich and his cronies within the station and our guards have never been involved to take stock of length of cables to be used within the precincts of KIPEVU or without, “the letter further read.

He went on to say that when they were previously involved to do stock and to move cables from one outfit to the other, such claims of theft didn’t occur and records are there to attest to the claim.

He continued to mention an interesting case where 80 metres of black cable was cut by a Mr. Gonna of KIPEVU and the same was loaded on a private courier Data Rush Company vehicle registration No. KBB 886X driven by Mr. Thomas Macharia on 25th July, 2008 allegedly being transported to KENGEN Nairobi Office. “Its common knowledge that KIPEVU is supplied from your Nairobi stores, and why would 80 metres cable be taken to Nairobi in a private van and more so without a gate pass?” he questioned.

In a letter which was equally copied to the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission (KACC) he concluded that since most of the alleged dubious deals being propelled by Rotich have been unearthed by his guards, he’s now pushing that the Managing Director Eddy Njoroge terminates his contruct.

He’s further intending to go the full throttle of swearing an affidavit in regards to all the claims against Mr. Rotich and to even adduce more evidence when called upon by the authorities.

End.

WAR ERUPTS IN SECURITY FIRM

BY JEFF OTIENO

BEDROCK SECURITY LTD which is a security firm based in Kisumu is embroiled in a serious controversy over its ownership and General Operations.

The firm which was registered way back in 2004 by Erick Ouma Okeyo and Patrick Odipo as its Directors are mandated by the registrar of companies to offer security services.

Bedrock is also having a sister company operating under the flagship BEDROCK HOLDINGS LTD which offers services like brick laying, wholesale and retail but not security which they are currently doing which contravenes section 7 and 22 of the company’s act cap 486.

According to BEDROCK SECURITY LTD Director Erick Okeyo, the purported owners are masqueraders who have been using his trade mark to defraud his clients. BEDROCK SECURITY has its roots well spread in the lake side city and its environs for now close to 5 years.

It will be interesting to see therefore what effect and action the looming court battle will have when the recess period of judges end s next week.

Already the registrar of societies has already reacted to Okeyos letter dated 20th Aug 2009 which read in part “The above company (Bedrock Holding Ltd is engaged in security services, cash Escort and Alarm services among others, please confirm to us in writing whether their Articles authorized security business in their objects.

On behalf of the registrar a one Mr. K. Mosoti state council in a letter dated 21st Aug 2009 ref: C 100764, read in part “Bedrock Holding Ltd according to its memorandum and articles of Association is not engaged in the provision of security services or cash escort or alarm or related services. “It should therefore not provide such services as the same or not part of its registered objects. It was copied to its Directors Elias Onyango and Stephen Ayugi

Stung by the looming ramifications of the inevitable legal battle, the two Directors (Stephen and Onyango) paid an advert in a section of the press warning that Erick Okeyo was once their employee and could not be entrusted by anybody to carry business on their behalf.

Perturbed by the move, Okeyo has instructed his lawyers Jude Ragot and David Otieno of Ragot and Otieno advocates to sue for defamation.

The same firm has been instructed to move to court to compel BEDROCK HOLDING LTD from doing security services.

It is worth noting that leading firms and personalities who have contracted BEDROCK SECURITY FIRM LTD are in a state of confusion on who is legitimate to operate with. Both firms have got offices in Kisumu with same logo crowning there precincts.

KIBOS SUGAR RELEASES 15 M TO FARMERS

By Jeff Otieno.

Farmers and cane transporters in Nyando District and its environs have been paid a staggering Kshs.15 million by Kibos Sugar and Allied Industries (KSAI).

The money was paid at the newly launched company’s weigh bridge in Awasi by the Managing Director Raju Channan Sigh.

“As per the company new policy to empower the locals economically we will be paying cane delivery and transport services in a span of a week or two,” said Raju amid applause from enthusiastic farmers.

Transporters and Farmers have always been at the mercy of some millers who despite their deliveries and services must rope in influential politicians for them to be paid after pleading for several months.

The newly launched weigh bridge is part of the company commitment to conform with the recent directive from the Ministry of Agriculture to compel millers to put weigh bridges close to farmers in order to avert spillages which have been to the disadvantage of farmers in terms of costs.

Kibos has got a milling capacity of 1650 tonnes per day and will soon generate 22 megawatts of power to the National grid.

KIBOS SUGAR TO GENERATE POWER

BY: JEFF OTIENO

Kibos Sugar Industry is to generate 25 mega watts of power out of which 22 mega watts will go to the National grid.

The fast growing Sugar firm is currently producing 3 mega watts for its own use but in a couple of weeks it will go the full throttle to attain the ambitious plan.

Speaking to journalists, the Managing Director Raju Channan revealed that already a foreign consultant has been contracted to ensure the plan is done within the stipulated time frame.

The move will be a boost to the power industry which is currently bedeviled with outages and rationing courtesy of the draught which has affected water levels in major dams.

Kibos Sugar last week officially launched an ultra modern weigh bridge where farmers will weigh their produce at their door step instead of travelling several miles which has always resulted in hefty costs and spillages.

A tone of sugar cane will be paid Kshs. 3000 within a week instead of Kshs 2,900 being paid by other local millers within a period of between 4 to 5 months.

The move early this week sparked fury and protests from other millers who wrote to Kenya Sugar Board to restrain Kibos from using the facility arguing that it’s tantamount to “Poaching”.

Local transporters who have also taken advantage of farmers have also protested bitterly about the location of the weigh bridge which is at Awasi in Nyando District.

Speaking to the press separately during the launching, a group of exuberant farmers in attendance described rival millers out bursts as an exhibition of ineptitude to compete in the now competitive liberalized market.

“Its unfortunate that under performing Managers of some of these firms are now clinging on the weigh bridge issue to divert people’s attention to scrutinize them on their luck warm performance”, the farmers noted.

Kibos which resumed crushing after a month long maintenance used over 400 million in repairs and has a capacity to crush 1,650 tonnes per day.

It’s the first sugar industry to implement a recent ministerial directive which require that each and every miller install a weigh bridge within the farmers reach to avoid spillage and whopping costs which have been a burden to farmers.

Players in the industry are therefore watching what action the Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) will take against the miller which seems to be implementing a new policy they recently crafted to benefit the farmers.

All the three firms Kibos, Chemilil and the financially crippled Muhoroni Sugar are located in Nyando District

KANU NOW GEARS UP A HEAD OF 2012 POLLS

By: JEFF OTIENO

The former ruling party KANU is currently embroiled in a vigorous Campaign to clean up its house a head of 2012 polls.

According to sources within the party’s top echelons the abrasive campaign onslaught to revive the former ruling party has been finalized.

KANU operative Tom Alila told journalists that areas such as Nyanza and Western Provinces have been earmarked by the co-ordinating committee whose mandate is to traverse the regions to recruit and popularize the party.

Alila argued that the former ruling party’s popularity had diminished courtesy of a clique whose agenda he described as “egocentric and parochial”.

“KANU is the only party in the country with known structures at the grassroot and therefore we won’t allow a clique whose agenda is not clear to kill it”, he said.

When pressed further by this writer to state where he belonged in terms of camps, he remained none committal. In KANU there is a camp allied to finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and the other tilting to the son of former president Daniel Arap Moi, Gedion Moi.

Moi’s camp recently made it clear that come 2012 elections the party will go it alone. But Uhuru’s camp which joined President Mwai Kibaki’s bandwagon under PNU flagship in the last disputed elections hasn’t made its stand clear yet.

Last weekend, the party had a bee hive of activities in the larger southern Nyanza doing recruitment and sensitization and in a fortnight to come they will roll their gears in Western Province towns like Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia among others.

With the prevailing wrangles in the ODM and PNU, KANU seems to be strategizing to capitalize in what pundits have described as inevitable looming fall outs.

Further, it will be interesting to see what mechanisms the former ruling party will deploy to wrestle a clout being enjoyed by ODM top brass under the tutelage of the Prime Minister Raila Odinga (Nyanza) and Musalia Mudavadi (Western).

But like it’s said, in a game of politics anything is possible; time will be the best judge.

MAWEGO GIRLS PRINCIPAL UNDER FIRE

BY: JEFF OTIENO

Local leaders in Karachuonyo constituency, Rachuonyo District are up in arms with Mawego Girls Principal Janet Kasuku for running the school with high handedness.

During a well attended funds drive in aid of St. Martin Oluti Secondary School in Kobuya Mawego, Hippo Komutho who is one of the Board of Governors members (BOG) appealed to the government to immediately intervene and transfer the “under performing principal “ to avert the looming crisis in the school.

Komutho attributed the recent riot by the students to “overwhelming pride and arrogance” from the principal who he alleged is doing things single handedly without consulting board members and other stake holders.

Kasuku is alleged to have hired the services of groundsmen as cooks to the chagrin of students who nearly torched the school, but quick intervention from villagers salvaged the day.

“It worth noting that it’s due to the attitude by this principal which has made us to unceremoniously exit from the board”, Komutho noted.

Agalaxy of board members including the chairman of the board who is also Marie stoppes country Director Cyprian Awiti recently quit their positions on grounds said to be related to how the principal has been managing the school.

When he took the podium during the harambee, the Director however down played the prevailing acrimony and tension between the warring parties.

A whopping Kshs. 1.6 million was raised for the construction of Oluti Secondary school classrooms and administration blocks.

Awiti gave a personal donation of Kshs. 200,000; Komutho Kshs. 100,000, Mumias sugar Managing Director Evans Kidero Kshs. 30,000 among others.

NYANZA CLERGY HAILS KIBAKI’S TOUR

BY JEFF OTIENO

Interdenominational church leaders in Nyanza Province have hailed President Mwai Kibaki’s three days tour of Luo Nyanza.

In a press statement, the chairman of the group Bishop Dr. Washington Ogonyo Ngede said the visit will go along way in “spurring development in the region”.

They further appealed to other members of the grand coalition Government to emulate both President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga in order for the country to achieve faster growth.

“We believe the tour which lasted for three days will go along way in cementing the ties between the Luos and Kikuyus” the statement read. “It’s our humble prayer that all the 42 tribes in Kenya will also borrow a leaf from the President and Prime Minister and work together for the sake of peace and unity of the country”, if further read.

They noted that the country is bigger than an individual or tribal egos and therefore appealed that MPs and ministers should preach peace and unity amongst various ethnic groups to support initiatives of the two principals.

Ngede reiterated that its their prayer for the grand coalition to remain united until 2012 when the country will brace her self to elect a new President without shedding blood as witnessed in the last General Election.

Meanwhile Marie Stopes country Director Cyprian Awiti has appealed to politicians to shun hatred and instead foster unity in order to propel the country to greater heights of growth.

Awiti hailed the two principals consistent moves which he described as “healthy and historic”. He was speaking over the weekend during a funds drive in aid of KenduBay Catholic Church where he helped to raise Kshs.600,000/= with a personal donation of Kshs.100,000/=.

He further urged politicians to seek for God’s intervention in whatever they do.

KISUMU TOWN EAST MP HECKLED

BY JEFF OTIENO

Kisumu Town East Legislator Shakeel Ahmed Shabir met the wrath of voters when he was heckled in his own back yard by an enthusiastic crowd which had lined up to receive the Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Kondele.

The Mp who could be seen nodding his head in disbelief were a group of leaders who had camped the better part of the day right at the airport ready to give the PM a rousing welcome.

During his last stop over in Kondele the PM introduced all the MPs and ministers in his entourage but when he gave a microphone to Shakeel, he was badly heckled and told unprintable words by the mammoth crowd to the disbelief of the Prime Minister who happens to be his political mentor.

Sources with the ODM ranks confided to this writer that Shakeel political woos has been sparked by an unsustainable election pledge where he promised the voters that half of his salary will go directly to his constituents and to date nothing has come forth.

He’s again being accused of arrogance, elusiveness and devising ivory approach to crucial political issues bedevelling his voters when he’s needed.

Back to the prime ministers reception at the airport, it was a low keyed affair in terms of high ranked to government officials who usually grace and take charge of such occasions.

Only the area OCPD Solomon Kiragu and the kisumu Town East DO 1 were the only high ranking officials to receive the Prime Minister.

Despite the well laid red carpet right from the runway up to the VIP lounge, the apparently happy Raila Odinga questioned the absence of the PC, PPO and DC according to an MP who requested for anonymity.

Interestingly, the newly appointed PC was one hour later seen wining and dining with some State House mandarins in a local Hotel. They were later joined for dinner by Nyando MP Fred Outa.

At the airport to receive the Prime Minister were local religious leaders, MPs Fred Outa Of Nyando, Professor Ayiecho Olweny of Muhoroni, John Olago Aluoch of Kisumu Town West, Jakoyo Midiwo of Gem and Shakeel Shabir Kisumu Town East.

Public Service Minister Dalmas otieno Anyango and Fisheries Minister Paul Otuoma arrived with the Prime Minister in his Military Chopper.

Enroute to the town centre, Raila made four stopovers in a bid to prepare ground for president Mwai Kibaki.

He told the Nyanza residents to be patient and hopeful saying elaborate development was underway mentioning the expansion Kisumu airport and the construction of some of the once dilapidated roads as some of the beckoning goodies.

About the prevailing debate of how the region has shared the “ half loaf bread” th PM dismissed the critics as malicious and none starters who had sinister motives to derail his political ambitions.

Nairobi based advocates George onyango Oloo and Ambrose Weda have been leading an onslaught against the PMs way of governance mostly in rural funerals trying to discredit him of how badly he has dished the few government slots allegedly to his cronies and relatives.

Close Raila Odinga pointmen who aggressively campaigned and fought for him at the hour of need have allegedely been sidelined according to political pundits.

They are Malindi based hotelier Otiende Rateng, Mombasa based business magnet Polycap Ocholla, Dave Okwach former nominated councilor, Nairobi business man John Obura Dimo, Samwel Ntere, former detainee olak Diego and the once wealthy but now financially crippled, Mombasa businessman Awiti Habo.

Habo was one of the PM financiers and close ally during the last elections but is now walking a tight rope financially depending on a paltry KSH 50,000 in terms of allowances he gets at KICC as one of the board members but only when the board sits which critics argue is not commensurate to his status and support he gave.

On the controversial Migingo Island , Raila was compelled to address the issue by the crowd in Kondele but he was a little cautious and diplomatic saying that it was a small mis-understanding between the two countries which will soon be resolved.

PC DIFFERS WITH MP OVER CASH

Y JEFF OTIENO

Nyanza PC Paul Olando has dismissed claims by Nyando MP Fred Outa that 24 million grant which was recently given to West Kano Irrigation Scheme has been siphoned by Senior Government and National Irrigation Board (NIB) officials.

During a stormy farmers meeting in West Kano NIB offices, the MP shocked farmers that the officers had swindled the grant nowander they were shifting goal posts and misinforming farmers.

“The money you’re expecting has been looted by these people seated here”, Outa said while pointing to the diase.

When he rose to speak Olando adviced the MP and other local leaders to weigh their sentiments before they utter them adding that such careless talks can spark unnecessary tension and hatred among the people.

“Whoever is claiming that some government officers have conspired to swindle the grant should immediately report the matter to the police for action”, the PC thundered to the attentive crowd.

He went on to alley fears from the farmers that the grant had been withdrawn saying that it was still intact but had just been deferred.

Olando emphasized that the grant will only be availed to farmers if they end wrangles and form farmers representative bodies.

Since early this year, West Kano Irrigation farmers have been on the war path with the MP who they argue is milking them dry through a Thika based Asian Operating under the flagship CAPWEL.

Their quest to meet the CAPWEL Director have been thwarted by the legislator who they allege is doing brokerage with the wealthy Asian to oppress them.

“How can we do business with someone who claims to be our partner who we’ve not even sat with”, said Amos Owiti who is the millers Director and a farmer.

Amos further claimed that CAPWEL was forcing them to sign contracts where they charge inputs to the tune of Kshs. 9,600 in terms of input per acre while other financiers charge a paltry Kshs.2, 500 per acre in other rice schemes.

“We want autonomy and we are tired of these punitive terms from CAPWEL”, Amos told the PC during a leaders meeting which preceded the main meeting.

“CAPWEL has extorted from us enough, how can they pay us 30 Kshs. Per Kg yet farmers from other schemes are paid Kshs. 60 per Kg,” said the chairman Obura Owuoth”.

West Kano Irrigation Scheme was started in 1976 and it has over 2500 acres owned by peasant rice farmers. It’s interesting and imperative to note that these farmers have not acquired title deeds since then.

N.G.O AIDS FAMILY

BY JEFF OTIENO

Hope for Victoria children (HOVIC) has donated blankets, food stuffs and built a house for the family of a former notorious Kisumu street Urchin Benard Odhiambo.

Odhiambo who is aged 14 years is now in standard 6 in Nduru Primary School in Kadibo Division Kisumu Town East District courtesy of HOVIC.

The institution through its noble Programme of rehabilitation identified Odhiambo a couple of years ago and retrieved him from the street.

HOVIC has agreed to shoulder all his education and basic needs until he becomes a responsible citizen.

Dr.Joshua Oron the Director of HOVIC who is based in London Britain had to control his emotions when he toured the dilapidated grass thatched tiny 10 by 10 house, housing the parents of Odhiambo together with 8 other children.

For the last couple of years since Odhiambo was retrieved from the streets, Dr. Oron has just been extending his olive branch but has never had an opportunity to pay a courtesy call to their homestead.

To the disbelief of the entire school fraternity and villagers, Dr. Oron ordered for the immediate construction of a semi permanent house which took roughly 10 hours to finish in the full glare of a battery of journalists.

HOVIC has got over 100 children in their support schedule, 33 in primary, 40 secondary and the rest in vacation training institutions.

The school head teacher Teresa Odumba applauded Dr. Orons gesture and appealed to other donors to emulate him.

Odhiambo’s mother aged 35 years while holding her last born child aged 4 months could not hide her joy and broke in tears when she saw building materials and constructors offloading ready to refurbish her grass thatched house.

His father aged 45 who is a labourer in the local rice fields was however dumb founded and just waved to the battery of journalists present saying “May Godless you”.

“HOVIC mission is to provide an enabling environment to the down trodden members of our society and therefore I won’t relent,” Dr. Oron told journalists during a brief interview.

The institution is also having a football team to help in the boding process and interaction

ACCUSATIONS AND COUNTER ACCUSATIONS MAROONS KENYA SUGAR BOARD OVER FERTILIZER

BY JEFF OTIENO

A war of words in Kenya Sugar Board has gone a notch higher with key stake holders in the sector threatening to go to court soon to block the impending purchase of fertilizer worth Ksh.1billion.

A group of farmers led by Tom Otieno Onyango are arguing that the move by Kenya Sugar Board is illegal and tantamount to fraud ever witnessed in the history of the sector.

The over 10 farmers representatives drawn from various zones among them Nyando and Homa-Bay Districts described the move as blatant theft and urged President Mwai Kibaki to promptly intervene to salvage the farmers from the shackles of the cartel.

The group recalled with rage how Rosemary Mkok who was in the year 2000 Company Secretary but currently the Chief Executive bought huge tones of fertilizer and had nowhere to take them because they had no storage facilities thus ended up dumping them.

“We will not entertain old tricks to defraud the farmers under the pretext of reforms,” the group thundered.

Early this week the CEO Rosemary Mkok in a section of the press singled out sugar millers to be the greatest impediments to reforms in the sector, a claim which the umbrella body (KESMA) Kenya Sugar Manufacturers Association through its Chairman Evans Kidero dismissed as ‘blatant lie’.

Speaking to this journalist on telephone Dr. Evans Kedero who is also the Managing Director of Mumias Sugar company described Mkok’s assertions as unfortunate and misleading.

“As far as I’m concerned buying of fertilizer isn’t the mandate or priority of the board” Kidero said.

“We expect the players in the sector to be more serious in tackling the envisaged reformes to make the fraternity more vibrant and competitive instead of viewing things parochially and personalizing issues,” he continued.

“Nzoia Sugar Company have got canes of between 48 – 60 months while Sony Sugar shoulders canes of about 60 months yet cane should take about 18 months normally where are we heading to sincerely,” he quipped.

Since she took over the mantle of leadership, Mkok has had tensed and moisty ties with some of her Directors who accuse her to be operating in isolation and with high handedness without consulting other stake holders.

They’re further alleging that Mkok seems to be having personal scores to settle with a clique of Directors who she feels were behind the ouster of her husband as the receiver Manager of the financially crippled Muhoroni sugar Company a couple of years ago.

The Directors are further alleging that Mkok’s entrenched enmity is due to the fact that they have refused to back her schemes in abid to reinstate her husband back to Muhoroni Sugar Company as the receiver Manager.

WAR STILL RAGES AT KSB OVER FERTILIZER

BY JEFF OTIENO

WAR STILL RAGES AT KSB OVER FERTILIZER

The Chief Executive of Kenya Sugar Board Rose Mkok is on the spot light over a staggering Ksh 1 billion earmarked for fertilizer purchase.

A group of farmers led by Tom Otieno Onyango from the larger southern Nyanza Sugar belt growing region have already written to all government agencies including the Kenya Anti Corruption Commission to promptly take all the necessary action to avert what they described as ‘day light theft’ by the Kenya Sugar Board.

The Board recently placed an advert in the local dailies inviting bidders and the bidding period is slated to close on 26th /5/2009. According to the enraged farmers, the board has no mandate what so ever to import the said fertilizer.

They further took issue with the Ministry of agriculture for siding with the board over the impending dubious purchase.

“The money should be used to develop farms and improve cash strapped factories which are heavily indebted,” they argued in a terse statement.”

“Some of the factories like Chemelil Sugar Company in Nyando District have not done maintenance for ages yet the board is sitting on the money,” they noted.

The group went on to allege that Kenya Sugar Board has already conspired with a clique of powerful Politicians in the Sugar belt areas to defraud farmers through the ‘illegal’ fertilizer purchase.

“Mkok is just a pawn of a powerful clique,” Onyango thundered.

Inside sources within Kenya Sugar Board confided to the press how the impending ‘fictitious’ purchase has divided the board with one divide saying the purchase is justified while the other is emphatic that the whole thing is just but a scheme to line the pockets of a few money hungry individuals.

Last week when the Board met to deliberate on the issue, a clique of members who are not for the purchase were allegedly intimidated with suspensions in a bid to cow them in order to succumb to pressure.

The farmers further urged the CEO to run the body professionally instead of operating as a political activist.
