MEDIA ADVISORY

KENYA DIASPORA DEVELOPMENT FORUM PLANNING A POLITICAL PARTIES’ TOWN HALL MEETING

Diaspora wants parties to level with them on plans and policies reflecting their aspirations

The Kenya Diaspora Development Forum of Minnesota has planned and scheduled an all-political parties town hall fo- rum to enable Kenya’s parties to introduce and explain their respective positions on a broad range of key national issues in the run up to the upcoming national elections. Party officials and leaders have been invited to gather in Minneapolis on December 3, 2012 for a discussion with the Diaspora community and to introduce their party positions on policies and plans for the role of the Diaspora in national development. Parties are expected to explain their visions and their commitment to taking action to increase opportunities for greater roles for the Kenya Diaspora community in national development.

The invitation letter sent to all political parties’ secretariats describes the all-political parties’ town hall meeting as an opportunity to present and discuss party positions and commitment to developing policies and measures to mainstream the Kenya Diaspora issues in the national policy agenda. Under the theme, Road Map to Diaspora Engagement in National Development: Parties’ Elections Campaign Positions, the forum’s aim is to mainstream and maximize support for the Diaspora’s agenda in national development. “Our aim is to offer the Diaspora community the opportunity to call for action to address laws, policies and practices that will further the Diaspora agenda” said forum chairman Idris Abdi.

According to the hosting committee, a panel of Diaspora community leaders, advocates and experts will present political parties seeking to form the next government with views on creating policies conducive for diaspora engagement. Key dimensions of this discussion include exploring measures towards increasing the formal participation of the Diaspora in policymaking and greater political inclusion. “It is self-evident that members of the Diaspora have been instrumental in channeling development resources to Kenya without the benefit of formal “diaspora and development” programs” said Idris Abdi, chairman of the KDDF-MN the hosting organization. “These spontaneous efforts and connections have been driven by a wide range of motivations, from the purely altruistic to the investment oriented. However, these efforts have shared one thing in common: they happen with little or no government intervention” he added. The Diaspora identifies proactive engagement with political parties as a means to secure support towards Diaspora- friendly policies and legislation.

A statement released by the planning committee about the forum read, in part, “It is our goal to engage the diverse segments of Kenya’s institutions in broadening the Diaspora’s voice through these engagements and calling upon the home country institutions to play a greater role in creating opportunities through the enactment of concrete pro-Diaspora policies. To this end, the Diaspora community’s political choices should be guided by the extent that the respective political parties and their presidential candidates demonstrate commitment to accommodations for the Diaspora agenda”.

Kenya Diaspora organizations in all parts of the world recognize that they have been marginalized for a long time. They take the position that remaining passive as an under-represented group is no longer acceptable and the time has come to take action. The Diaspora communities are, therefore, joining forces to bring their agenda and inclusion issues to the forefront through securing clear and unequivocal commitment to their affairs by political parties.

The majority of Diaspora Kenyans share the experience of pursuing various development activities, altruistic and family goals in Kenya. These efforts aim at self-improvement, at supporting families and communities, and, improving life conditions for all. However, because these efforts are fragmented and lack structured collaboration with the government, development organizations and communities, their outcomes are not fully realized to the extent possible. The Kenya Diaspora Development Forum of Minnesota, a Diaspora community non-profit organization committed to building progressive communities, is contributing to efforts aimed at organizing and mobilizing Diaspora Kenyans to take steps to mainstream and entrench Diaspora agenda in the national political and policy discourse.

Through town hall meetings and other local activities, the KDDF-MN and like-minded Kenya Diaspora organizations are bringing the messages and goals of Road Map to Diaspora Engagement in National Development to political parties to take action through their 2013 elections platforms to increase opportunities for the inclusion of the Kenya Diaspora in national affairs. To learn more about Road Map to Diaspora Engagement in National Development, contact the Kenya Diaspora Development Forum of Minnesota.

The organizing committee is asking parties to indicate their participation at this forum by the Friday November 16, 2012.

Benson Metho, Secretary, Kenya Diaspora Development Forum of Minnesota at: kddfmn@gmail.com

Road Map to Diaspora Engagement in National Development is a statement of the principle that all Kenyans have a right to inclusion, representation and participation in national affairs. It is a framework principle for discussions and activities that are aimed at furthering the short, medium and long-term interests and aspirations of the Kenya Diaspora community in the con- text of Kenya’s development. We call on all Diaspora Kenyans, parties and individuals seeking elective office to take action to build progressive Diaspora policies that will support the millions of Kenyans living in the Diaspora, their efforts and pursuits.

Disclosure: Kenya Diaspora Development Forum (KDDF) is a non-partisan organization whose main focus is promoting the progress through expanding collaboration between the Kenya Diaspora community, national and transnational partners. KDDF-MN is neither a subsidiary of any organization nor an extension of any political organization.

PRESS RELEASE

African leaders, academics to debate economic transformation and empowerment at African Economic Conference 2012

The conference is the most comprehensive event held each year on Africa’s economy and development

KIGALI, Rwanda, October 25, 2012/ — Hundreds of leaders and scholars from Africa and around the world will gather in Kigali, Rwanda, from October 30 to November 2 to debate the continent’s prospects for sustainable and inclusive growth in the context of the international economic crisis.

Logo African Economic Conference 2012: http://www.photos.apo-opa.com/plog-content/images/apo/logos/aec-logo.jpg

Organized each year by the African Development Bank (AfDB) (http://www.afdb.org), the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the 7th annual African Economic Conference (http://www.africaneconomicconference.org) will be held in Kigali under the theme “Inclusive and Sustainable Development in an Age of Economic Uncertainty.”

The conference is the most comprehensive event held each year on Africa’s economy and development, discussing macroeconomic prospects, as well as trade and finance and development policy in a global context.

Africa has grown strongly over the past decade. Having weathered the economic crisis, the continent’s average growth is expected to rebound to 4.8 percent in 2013.

The region now faces the challenge of translating that growth into effective poverty reduction and sustainable human development, through employment creation, the establishment of quality social services, and expanding opportunities for political and economic participation.

The conference will examine the possibility of pursuing these objectives in the face of a worsening international economic environment, volatile food and fuel markets, and falling levels of exports, remittances and official aid.

“African policy-makers are by and large continuing to realize their quest for growth and improved well-being in their countries,” said Donald Kaberuka, President of the African Development Bank. “However, in a difficult international environment, the question is how to meet the investment requirements to continue to forge ahead.”

Participants will examine the key drivers of growth in Africa. With a growing number of countries on the continent producing or exploring for oil, the conference will look at the possibility of using profits from extractive industries to spur economic diversification and investments in social capital and human development.

“Africa’s vast natural wealth can create opportunities to accelerate human development,” said Helen Clark, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme. “It can provide the basis for infrastructure development, economic diversification, new jobs and businesses, and the domestic resources to fund quality services and social protection.”

Trade with developed and emerging economies presents additional opportunities for growth and so does regional integration, which can unleash the full potential of Africa’s investment and business environment. To that end, the participants will look at how barriers can be removed and regulations improved to allow people to benefit from trade.

With the number of youth in Africa set to double by 2045, and 27 percent of them currently unemployed, the conference will also look at the potential behind Africa’s present and future workforce.

“Creating employment for young people isn’t just crucial for social cohesion and stability. It creates a virtuous cycle of productivity, innovation, economic growth and fulfillment,” said ECA Executive Secretary Carlos Lopes.

The African Economic Conference is organized as a series of open thematic debates, combined with sessions that review policy research from across the continent. The conference provides a will provide a uniquely open forum for political leaders, academics and emerging talents from the continent to discuss solutions to Africa’s most pressing development challenges.

Kenya: Money, tribe and impunity driving our politics

From: odhiambo okecth

Friends,

In the recent past, I have been involved with several Community Groups, the Councils and the University Students in Kenya in championing for safer waste disposal and environmental management.

I was invited to a workshop on Green Economy at Kenyatta University on the 3rd Oct and I attended. And on the 12th-16th November, they will be hosting World University Students in Nairobi on the same topic; Green Economy.

Having read the posting and suggestions from a friend from Cameroon Mr. Ohiri Ubomah, I want to make some open follow-up on the same. Can the University Students in Africa unite to create a move that will change the course of action in Africa?

Yes they can.

Mr. Ohiri leaves and works in the United States of America and him and other colleagues are keen on making Health Education be incorporated in the Education Curriculum in Africa. We could add Environmental Management to this as well.

Africa is celebrating 50 years of their Independence during this time in History. And as we celebrate those years, they are definitely lost years. We have seen no tangible development across Africa that we can take to the bank. And it is is with this in mind that as we celebrate our 50 years on Independence in Kenya next year, on the 1st June 2013 to be specific, we must pause, think and re-group.

Will it be business as usual? No. Not this time.

We will also be going for a General Election in Kenya next year, and with this comes an opportunity to entrench impunity, tribalism and to unleash stolen money on the electorate. We can stop this if we unite forces and mobilize the University Students to step forward and help make change take place.

For how long will we be saddled with inept leadership hinged on stolen money and tribe as the driving attributes to power and more wealth. And not to National Development?

I firmly believe that University Students in Africa have the ability to isolate issues and stay with the facts. I also firmly believe that University Students can be the change agents that will catapult Africa to new Leadership. They can withstand any financial onslaught from the Politicians and help make all and sundry understand the issues upon which Elections ought to be won.

If our Politicians cannot understand this, then someone MUST make them understand this. And the University Students across Africa stand a better chance stepping forward now to help drive the change agenda.

These are issues close to my heart.

USA: Fight suppression, register to vote

From: Anna Galland, MoveOn.org Civic Action

Dear MoveOn member,

In 2008, 6 million people didn’t vote because they missed a deadline or didn’t know how to register.1 With voter registration deadlines coming up in many states, let’s make sure those voices get heard in 2012.

Hundreds of civic groups, like the League of Women Voters and Voto Latino, have organized hundreds of events on Tuesday, September 25—National Voter Registration Day. All over the country, volunteers and celebrities will hit the streets for a single day of coordinated outreach to register voters.

Our allies are planning hundreds of simple and fun events. The more people who participate, the more people we’ll actually register. Can you sign up to help register voters and raise awareness on Tuesday?
Click here to RSVP for a National Voter Registration Day event near Dayton.

http://events.nationalvoterregistrationday.org/events

With voting rights under attack, it’s more important than ever to get registered to vote. By joining together on the same day, integrating field and online technology, we’ll help make sure voters know how, when, and where they can register to vote.

On Tuesday, we’ll register voters where they work, travel, and play—at main transportation hubs, shopping malls, concerts, and sporting events. We’re making it as easy as possible to make sure everyone has the information they need to vote this November.

There’s a National Voter Registration event near you. Can you stop by and help register voters and promote awareness?

I want more information on how to register to vote.

THIRD INTERNATIONAL ICT FOR DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE IN RURAL KENYA

26-28 October 2012

Background Information
IT Skills 4 Rural Kenya in conjunction with Model I.T.U, International Youth Council – Kenya Chapter and Kibugat ICT Centre have hosted two International Conferences in the village of Kibugat, Bureti District in the Rift Valley on a wide variety of themes over the last two years. The Conference, which is undoubtedly first and ground breaking in rural Kenya, has attracted a lot of interest from among others, Governments agencies in Kenya and the United Kingdom, Policy makers, educationalists, Community activists, Academia, young people and diverse NGOs from across the UK and Kenya.

During the last Conference in October 2011 under the theme “Community first before technology” participants felt the need to model the 3rd Conference (October 26th – 28th) on outreach work and with the issue of peace and mutual coexistence between tribes across Kenya and, especially as a lead up year to the presidential elections. The participants, all collectively formed an association called the Kenya Digital Village Network which is a platform for interactive engagement for information sharing, collaboration and creation of a value based network (localized community informatics model) for ICT actors.

The Conference this year will therefore seek to use a mix of practical training workshops; participatory learning, workshop used last year on Community Networks & Networking and presentations on how ICTs in the broadest sense can be appropriated to promote peace and celebrate cultural diversity. The conference this year is earmarked to have the following theme “Technology and Peace for Diverse Little Voices”.

ICT4D Conference
ICT4D Kenya targets communities and schools, with the aim of building the capacity of youth, men and women through community ICT resource centers to introduce them to new ways of learning. The objectives of the conference include:

? To show applications of basic ICTs as stimulants and tools for crises awareness and mapping and peace building

? To demonstrate use of basic multimedia technology, films and picture in harnessing cultural divergence for tolerance and peace

? To advocate for responsible and effective use of social and mainstream media for a peaceful and prosperous Kenya

? To understand the role of citizen journalism and its potential in monitoring hate speech.

The Conference this year will therefore seek to use a mix of practical training workshops; participatory learning, workshop used last year on Community Networks & Networking and presentations on how ICTs in the broadest sense can be appropriated to promote peace and celebrate cultural diversity.

Conference program
? Relevant brief Key Note Address that will touch on all the aspects of the conference, the principle of information and role of ICT in Peace and Development;

? Participatory Learning Workshop; Scenario Based Approach: Participatory interactive Workshop led by resourceful persons to set the tone for the conference and create curiosity and come up with relevant scenarios;

? Interactive Panelists’ Presentations by experts and resourceful persons that will dwell on the traditional and modern technologies and emerging technologies , use of case studies and reports and their relations to peace and development;

? Group and focused discussions to encourage knowledge, success stories and experiences sharing in application of ICTs in peace building, community resource management and networking.

Conference outcomes
? Acquisition of relevant skills and knowledge in community and social media for community mobilization and peace building and proactive exploitation of social capital

? Promotion of digital villages and community resources centers as initiatives for capacity building, knowledge sharing, information dissemination and e-government services

? Development of mechanisms, platforms and networks for strengthening the Kenyan Digital Village Networks and creation of an avenue for continued engagements, partnerships, exchanges and cross cultural dialogues in Kenya and beyond.

? Participants will understand the use of technologies such as frontline SMS to broadcast peace messages to various communities.

? Build the capacity of participants in use of social media.

? Broaden the capacity and understanding of citizen journalism.

Kenya: The Port City of Asmara

From: odhiambo okecth

Friends,

As I make this posting, my heart is with my kid Sister who has just lost her Husband. May the almighty God rest his soul in peace and give my Sister the strength to bear the loss.

Now, The East Africa Youth Forum 2012 was hosted in the Port City of Asmara from the 7th July 2012. The Forum was attended by several Youth Leaders from across the whole of East Africa.

[image] the University of Nairobi- Chiromo Campus.

One thing that surprised all the participants was how clean Asmara is. I am told, they did not see any single dirt. And yet, Eritrea is only 21 Years into their Independence.

One thing that stood out for the Youths was the resolve by the Public Officers to do their work. They make it so easy for the general populace to fall in place and maintain Law and Order.

I bet we must do something in Kenya.

I am happy to report that The Clean Kenya Campaign has taken root and the Government Agencies concerned are working with us to ensure that as we celebrate 50 Years into our Independence next year, a Clean Kenya shall have been achieved.

This is a deliberate deliverable initiative and on the 28th August 2012, we will be hosting The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management at the KICC where we will look at Practical Steps that we must make in the Process of Separation of Waste at Source. A Strategic Planning Session for this will be hosted on the 31st July and all those whom have been invited are very key to the success of this Campaign.

A Clean Kenya at 50 is very possible. Eritrea has achieved it. Rwanda has achieved it. Why can we not achieve the same?

PRESS RELEASE

THE PEACE EDUCATION, PEACE BUILDING AND DEMOCRATIZATION ARTS FESTIVAL IN KISUMU.

The Misango Arts Ensemble is Kenya’s vibrant education and developmental theatre. A theatre that its purpose is to create space where all people have the possibility and the right to be heard. It brings the people together to openly discuss a problem and encourage participation and self-expression, especially from those who often go unheard.
THEME: ADVANCING DEMOCRACY: ARTS FOR SUSTAINABLE PEACE BUILDING AND NATIONAL RECONCILIATION.

The organization seeks to use the medium of arts in the quest for the national cohesion, reconciliation and healing. The festival will solidly address the challenges of a holistic peaceful transformation and therefore easily provide accessible and creative platform for peace education, peace building and democratization process in Kenya.
The peace education, peace building and democratization arts festival will therefore provide a rich forum for peace reflection. It will be a proactive learning process to reduce political tension and tribal animosity in the region, therefore promoting democratization and peace. Drama is the most exciting method of message dissemination. People learn better while they are happy.
The Western Kenya region, so to speak, is usually a politically charged area in Kenya, and with the impending general election there is need to arrest the situation. The festival will therefore, enhance regional debates on the devolution, peace and democracy. The festival is dubbed ‘’THE VICTOR OGOLLA NYANGORE PEACE ARTS FESTIVAL’’ ,to be held in Kisumu City as from the 7th_8th December 2012 at the Kisumu Social Centre, a centre that propelled Victor to fame in artistic world.

The festival will feature performing and visual arts, symposia(paper presentations on democracy and peace building)films and photo exhibitions.

The late Victor Ogolla Nyangore was greatly involved in peace building initiative and peace education through the medium of arts both in Kenya and in Sudan. He participated in various peace education in creative arts performances and training in Mount Kenya District during land clashes supported by Action Aid Kenya.(1994_1995)He was part of the Kenya delegation sponsored by UNESCO to Sudan for interactive workshop and the launch of the Africa Association of Drama for Peace(A.A.D.P),an organization which focuses on the use of drama/theatre and peace education/peace building and seeking sustainable reconciliation amongst all peoples in Africa.

The Misango Arts Ensemble therefore seeks the national and international development partners interested in a holistic peaceful transformation through the medium of arts to promote democratization process. The festival therefore will be a forum for actively engaging the community in a unique, creative, stimulating, memorable and thought provocative way.

We hereby appeal to well wishers and development partners to support THE VICTOR OGOLLA NYANGORE PEACE ARTS FESTIVAL.

AKECH OBAT MASIRA
DIRECTOR.

Election of Kenyan Diaspora Leadership Assembly Heats Up as New Candidate Intake Deadline Looms

From: Comfort Mwangi

JACKSONVILLE, FL–JULY 9–The Kenyan Diaspora is about to have its first elected global decision-making assembly. According to the Election Coordinators, candidates from over 31 jurisdictions in USA, Canada, Europe, Africa and Middle East have already expressed interest in representing their states, provinces or countries of residence.

Previously scheduled for July 7, the Election of the first Kenya Diaspora Leadership Assembly is now rescheduled for July 13-14, 2012. The new deadline for registering as a contestant is 11:59 pm, Wednesday July 11th, 2012 at the candidate intake page http://kenyadiasporadev.org/kenya-diaspora-leadership-assembly. Any Kenyan in the Diaspora, aged 18 years or above is free to contest.

Kenyans in the Diaspora have not been able to participate significantly in Kenya’s development in spite of their economic , intellectual and entrepreneurial strength. This has been caused by lack of a unifying authority that can produce spokespeople and thought leaders.

Self-appointed “leaders” with no authority to speak for the Diaspora have used this leadership vacuum to peddle their personal agendas . An elected representative body is a major step forward in strengthening Diaspora cohesion and empowerment in the development of Kenya.

“An elected member of the DLA would represent a region/country or a sector” the meeting ruled. An elected official shall be known as MDLA –short for Member of ( Kenya) Diaspora Leadership Assembly . The Assembly will consist of three types of representatives: 1. Those representing states/countries 2. Those representing sectors 3. Those representing larger regions/subcontinents to constitute Board of Trustees. The list of contest areas/sectors can be found at http://kenyadiasporadev.org/kenya-diaspora-leadership-assembly .
The elected officials will then meet and elect an Executive Governing Council from among them, also designating Chair, Secretary, Finance Director etc.

Diaspora leaders of organizations, businesses, churches, mosques, media etc are requested to help publicize the election to their members: They may endorse the election and publicly declare their commitment to assist the Diaspora at http://www.causes.com/actions/1664006.
For any questions, please send an email to info@Kenyadiasporadev.org or call +1-904-418-2608

The Africa CEO Forum launched at the AfDB Annual Meetings in Arusha

From: News Release – African Press Organization (APO)

ARUSHA, Tanzania, June 7, 2012/ — The Africa CEO forum (ACF) was officially launched by Tim Turner, AfDB private sector operations Director, and Amir Ben Yahmed, Vice President of Groupe Jeune Afrique and founder and executive producer of the event, at the Annual Meetings of the African Development Bank (AfDB) (http://www.afdb.org) in Arusha, Tanzania.

The Africa CEO Forum is the first international conference dedicated to top African companies, and breaks the mould of typical sector-focused events and run-of-the-mill academic forums. On 20 and 21 November 2012 in Geneva, it will bring together entrepreneurs, investors, financial decision-makers, and policy-makers to promote the success of the African private sector, providing a platform for public-private dialogue and high-level strategic solutions to support the development of companies and their African markets.

For the AfDB, co-organizer of the event, the Africa CEO Forum fits perfectly into the AfDB’s mission, which is to foster an environment conducive to business and private sector development for the transformation and a more inclusive growth of the African economy. “It will showcase the initiatives and the success stories of African entrepreneurship, allow entrepreneurs to share their experiences, and promote regional and intra-African trade,” said Tim Turner.

“As an annual gathering of Francophone and Anglophone Africa’s most brilliant CEO’s and major African and international decision makers, the ACF will be a unique platform dedicated to supporting private sector-led growth in Africa. In an increasingly connected world economy, it will also promote the rise of leading African companies”, concluded Amir Ben Yahmed, Vice President of Groupe Jeune Afrique.

Several heads of Africa’s most prominent companies have already confirmed their attendance. Among them feature Aliko Dangote, CEO of Nigeria’s largest industrial conglomerate, Jean-Louis Billon, president of Sifca, Cote d’Ivoire’s biggest private employer, Issad Rebrad, CEO of Cevital, the leading private group in Algeria, Terrab Mostafa, CEO of the Moroccan company OCP, the world’s major phosphates exporter, and Mark Cutifani, who heads South African mining group, AngloGold Ashanti. Other major international company chiefs who have announced their attendance at the Geneva meeting include Tidjane Thiam, CEO of top British insurance group, Prudential, and Sunny Verghese, CEO of Olam, the agribusiness multinational based in Singapore.
