USA, NY: Onjiko SDA Church Fundraising

from Doc Odotte

DEAR FRIENDS:

I am appealing to all friends, familly and well wishers to come and help us raise funds for Onjiko Seventh Day Adventist Church, in Kano Kochogo. I am making this appeal on behalf of my Mother, Mama Penina Okello. Onjiko Seventh Day Adventist Church will be the first SDA church in this predominantly Anglican, Catholic and African Inland Church region.

My mother, Mama Penina Adede who is visiting here in the United States has always dreamt of having an SDA church in Onjiko as she remembers having to walk over 10 miles to go to the nearest SDA church. An opportunity to build an SDA church in Onjiko recently became a reality when someone donated land and invited the SDA adherants to build this church on this land. On behalf of Mama Penina, I am hereby appealing and inviting you to come and help raise funds to lay down the foundation of this church which will serve many SDA folks in this region.

The Fundraising will be held on November 5, 2011, at the Famous “KONDULA HALL” in Monroe, New York. GRACE EPICOPAL CHURCH, 1(ONE) FOREST AVENUE, MONROE NY 10950.

Subject: The info for the request to be circulated via AKR

Dear Fellow Kenyans,

Receive greetings from my family. This is to let you know that my wife and I were blessed with a baby boy on the 8th of August this year. However, he was born premature at 6.5 months and was placed in ICU at the King Faisal Hospital here in Kigali. God has sustained him and even though he was born extremely underweight (at 715 gms) he is growing and has gained up to 1.6 Kg. He is now out of ICU but is still in the general wards for probably another two to three weeks.

Kindly stand by us in prayer. We also appeal for your support financially as we try to raise the required 5 million Francs to settle the hospital bill. We have organized a funds raising event on Saturday 15th of October at Grill and BBQ (Wahomes, Carwash 2) from 3 p.m. In the meantime the organizing committee, friends and well wishers will meet on Tuesday 11th Oct 2011 at 6:30 pm at Roasters Inn and on Thursday 13th Oct 2011 at 6:30 p.m at Grill & BBQ.

Thank you and God bless,

Kind regards,

World: Poor Economics: A Radical Rethinking of the Way to Fight Global Poverty.

Forwarded by: Yona Maro

Esther Duflo grew up in France pitying Kolkata’s poor, based on what she had read in a comic book about Mother Teresa. Abhijit Banerjee grew up in Kolkata envying them: poor kids always had time to play and they routinely beat him at marbles. As economists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, both remain fascinated by poverty. In an engrossing new book they draw on some intrepid research and a store of personal anecdotes to illuminate the lives of the 865m people who, at the last count, live on less than $0.99 a day.

The two economists made their names (and remade their discipline) by championing randomised trials. These trials test anti-poverty remedies much as pharmaceutical firms test drugs. One group gets the remedy, another does not. The two groups are chosen at random, so the remedy should be the only systematic difference between them. If the first group does better, the benefit can be attributed to the project and not the many other factors that might otherwise obscure the result.

These trials proved immensely appealing. They promised to sift nuggets of truth from the slurry of received wisdom and wishful thinking that characterises much aid-talk. The hope was that once a trial proved the worth of a project or programme, governments and donors would back it and prescribe it more widely.

The approach has caught on. Another book, “More Than Good Intentions” by Dean Karlan and Jacob Appel of Innovations for Poverty Action is also out this month. But the approach has also attracted criticism. These trials, the critics point out, show whether a drug or remedy works, but not how it works. Even in medicine, a randomised trial can only show whether the average patient benefits; not whether any individual patient will benefit. Human physiology differs from patient to patient, so does the physiology of poverty.

“Poor Economics” should appease some of their critics. It draws on a variety of evidence, not limiting itself to the results of randomised trials, as if they are the only route to truth. And the authors’ interest is not confined to “what works”, but also to how and why it works. Indeed, Ms Duflo and Mr Banerjee, perhaps more than some of their disciples, are able theorists as well as thoroughgoing empiricists.

They are fascinated by the way the poor think and make decisions. Poor people are not stupid, but they can be misinformed or overwhelmed by circumstance, struggling to do what even they recognise is in their best interests. The authors recount (with grudging admiration) how nurses in rural Rajasthan outwitted the two professors’ efforts to stop them skiving off work. They also describe how borrowers in south India exploited a contractual loophole to avoid taking out health insurance, which their microlender insisted they buy for their own good.

The poor, like anyone else, can also succumb to inertia, procrastination and self-sabotage. The authors discovered it was quite normal for poor women in the Indian city of Hyderabad to take out a microloan charging 24% interest only to deposit it in a savings account that paid 4%. This seems mad, except that the obligation to repay the loan ensured the women did not squander the money. Farmers in western Kenya miss out on the benefits of fertiliser because, by the time the planting season arrives they have often spent their earnings from the previous harvest. But farmers far-sighted enough to buy the fertiliser straight after the harvest, when they do have money, do not sell it, despite facing all the same demands on their resources. In other words, farmers cannot save the money to buy fertiliser, but they can save the physical fertiliser itself.

Poverty is often linked in the public mind with dependency. But, as the authors point out, the poor bear more responsibility for their lives than the rich, who coast along, enjoying chlorinated water, drawing a regular salary, paid directly into a bank account, perhaps with contributions to their pension and health care automatically deducted. The rich can indulge their weakness for cigarettes and alcohol without fear of financial ruin. The poor, in contrast, have to watch every cup of sugary tea. Mr Banerjee and Ms Duflo recommend a variety of nudges, props and subsidies that will make it as easy for poor people to make the right decisions as it is already for the rich.

If it is a mistake to equate poverty and dependency, it is equally mistaken to believe the poor will lift themselves up by their bootstraps. The book crosses swords with the business gurus and philanthropists who project their own enthusiasm for Promethean entrepreneurship onto the poor. Yes, the poor are more likely to run their own business than the rest of us. But that is because they have no other choice. When asked, most of them aspire to a government post or a factory job. Developing countries are not full of billions of budding entrepreneurs; they are full of billions of budding salary men.

The authors also dissent from the “melancholy view” held by some economists, who argue that bad politics will always trump good policy. Why bother figuring out the best way to spend a dollar on education, when $0.87 will be diverted into the pockets of officials? These economists argue that you can’t do anything in a country with bad institutions—and you can’t do much about these bad institutions either. You just have to wait for a revolution.

But Mr Banerjee and Ms Duflo advocate what they call a “quiet revolution”. They insist that things can be improved “at the margin”, which is an economist’s way of saying that things can get better, even if they are very bad. They also make the case that improved policies can contribute to better politics. Once constituents see that good policy making can make a difference to their lives, they raise their expectations, and demand more.

Sadistic Reminder of PEV By Janet Feldman

from Judy Miriga

Folks,

This is a serious matter involving International public taxpayer money and Janet MUST be investigated by FBI and Interpol Police.

The truth must be known, as these matters are of public information and interest affecting public life and taxpayers.

I wonder, could this be where the Minister Esther Mutugi could have borrowed the idea that HIV/AIDs should be put into a concentration camp or do they have something in common with HIV/AIDs fund case scenario?…….

There are possibilities that HIV/AIDs fund has been gravely misused or misappropriated, and more or so, it was used for unsuspecting activities or short-changed. We therefore demand facts of the matter, check and balances, accountability and transparency.

I am therefore asking the Head of HIV/AIDs Mission, Presidents and Directors to through some light here, for the world to know …… all about the hidden mission behind the purpose and aims of HIV/AIDs Fund to Kenya and Africa and whether the Funds are meeting its obligations, or are as accounted for, go to the people and mission intended for or not…….and who are the masterminders behind under-cover deals ?……..

Thank you all,

Janet Feldman’s decision to ignore pleas by various Kenyans at home and abroad to release the results of the KAC Election – now suppressed for the fifth day running – is a contemptous disregard for the wananchi of this country and the traumatic feelings they are still recovering in the aftermath of PEV. This arrogant white woman has no respect for the intervention of the New Generation Leaders like Otieno Sungu whose courteous appeal to her to let him verify the election results she trashed dismissively.

As far as Janet is concerned, the opinions of Kenyans on their own organisation count for nothing; only her arrogant views matter. And she damn well does what she wants with KAC, and the hell with what Kenyans say about it.

She is a sadist bent on reminding us the botched December, 2007 elections. She doesnt care a damn about the stress we underwent over stolen and rigged elections. KAC is hers and hers alone to decide what to do with. Who are we to demand a say in the affairs of the KAC when that is hers alone to decide ?

We have been a free Kenyan Nation since 1963. We are not about to surrender our sovereignty to the White Martinet Lady of Rhode Island. You must show some respect when Otieno Sungu and others like him when they ask you the results.

As for your so-called AIDS programmes by KAIPPG in western Kenya, rest assured I will thoroughly investigate the veracity of your claims. Already, I am suspicious.

You claim on a turn-over of USD 110,000 KAIPPG is running an AIDS programme for 1,000,000 in 24 Western Kenya with a staff of only two – you in Rhode Island and James Onyango in Mumias ? How can Onyango single-handedly administer a programme for 1,000,000 ? How can a programme for 1,000,000 be run on a budget of USD 110,000 only ?

Mohamed Warsama

From: JM
sbj; WHY JANET FELDMAN CANNOT ANNOUNCE THE OFFICIAL KCA ELECTION RESULTS!/Otieno

Janet,

I would hate to respond to you in a different forum than KCA but I’m forced to do so because you are misleading the members of this forum from understanding the current quagmire in KCA.

As the outgoing president of KCA whose Executive team was dissolved through a “coup de tat” by a special interest group of 12 members using clandestine means, I am forced to respond and shed some light.

As soon as the “gang of 12” hijacked KCA from my executive using unorthodox and lame excuses, you took upon yourself to moderate some members including myself who differed with the “Gang of 12” members. If truth be told, KCA has been limited to a participation of 12 active members who engineered my dismissal because as the president, I refused to allow KCA to partner with a financial group that includes these 12 individuals.

My argument was that KCA is a non-profit registered organization and should NOT be involved in any financial venture schemes. I was overuled by the “gang of 12” who took upon themselves to dissolve my executive and conduct sham elections that were undemocratic.

The motive behind the “gang of 12” is financial gains from the newly formed Kenya Diapsora Investment Funds. Majority of KCA members who were displeased by the actions of the “gang of 12” are no longer active participants on the KCA forum and that’s why its only less than 2 dozen members participated in this elections. This group is not a representative sample of KCA or the diaspora, and as such, these elections should NOT be honored or recognised since they were not conducted in a democratic manner.

The “gang of 12” who appointed themselves interim executive members nominated each other as candidates for the executive seats while moderating the forum from “outside” interferance.
Janet, any house built on dubious foundation can never last.

And BTW, I am not interested in current or future KCA executive position.

John Maina

From: Henry Gichaba

Dear Kenyans,

Janet Feldman fears that if she announces that Abdul Yakub won the KCA elections, she will not be able to use Kenya’s name and KCA to raise funds.

As I informed you earlier, the un-announced winner of the KCA elections is Abdulsalam Yakub of New York. I also explained the reasons why Ms. Janet Feldman can’t announce the KCA results. It’s because she has far-reaching financial interests in Kenya. Through the rubber-stamp of KCA and the use of Kenya’s name, she is able to enrich her resume and get more money which she claims to use in helping Kenyans suffering from HIV/AIDS and other ailments.

When I pointed out this unfortunate development, Janet Feldman said she would “take other measures.” I must that Kenya’s name has been used wrongly by an American called Janet Feldman to collect funds whose use isn’t clearly explained as required by Federal Law. Both Feldman and Brodsky have registered non-profit organizations 501 3 (c) in the USA purporting to raise funds for work in Kenya but only feasible on paper.

One, according to US Federal Law, one must be account for the use of untaxed funds raised through legally registered non-profit organizations. Look at Janet’s Feldman’s fundraising for use in Kenya in 2008-2009.

http://www.kaippg.org/involved.html “Please contact Janet Feldman at kaippg@earthlink.net or James Onyango at kaippg@africaonline.co.ke if you would like to volunteer your time, or expertise, or to donate funds or other items. Many Top of the list is that we need program and core-funding to enable us meet our budgetary requirements. Our budget for 2008-2009 is US $200,000.”

I’ve taken the pain to find out the existence of the projects on Janet’s site but I’ve not been successful. First, in the Motor Vehicle Department, no vehicles are registered in the name of Janet’s KAIPPG.

Right on the ground in Kenya, I’ve interviewed people and there’s hardly any support for AIDS/HIP victims assisted by Janet Feldman’s organization. Janet, please give us the breakdown of people who benefitted from your 2008-2009 budget.

Janet has previously threatened me with “other measures will be taken” kind of stuff. Now I want Janet to come out clean on how she uses the money she raises helping needy people in Kenya.

I hope you have filed your taxes for that period and that the items you entered in every column are true to the best of your knowledge. Second, I suspect failed accountability in actual use of these funds according to US federal requirements. Based on the reports from the ground, Janet Feldman has not funded AIDS-related projects in Kenya in the magnitude of her 2008-2009 budget.

Now read for yourselves: http://www.kaippg.org/involved.html

Richard Brodsky is foxier than his countrywoman from Boston. It’s hard to nail Richard in terms of specifics. This New Yorker’s sin is that he uses KCA (see KCA membership and voting rights) to advertize his interests. However, his books with the feds seem to be well kept (at least on paper). However, we will also follow through to ascertain the exact nature of activities where he uses public funds. When the courts and the feds subpoena his use of funds which he collects – like use of credit cards billed to his organization – this man, I’ve been advised is a fox.

On the other hand, James Onyango shouldn’t allow his name to be used by Janet without actual work going on in Kenya. On the same note, KCA shouldn’t be used as a tool to collect funds whose use is not verifiable on the ground.

“The mission of the Foundation is to provide food, shelter and shoes for orphans living in Kenya, raise money for research for the cure or vaccine for AIDS, to help those already afflicted with AIDS, and to help those with brain cancer.” This man, at least, travels to Kenya to buy some dinner in Kisumu.

I am asking Janet Feldman: 1) leave KCA to Kenyans 2) stop using Kenya’s name to raise funds 3) stop threatening me and Chifu that “other measures will be taken” whener we ask legitimate questions. I am going to demand that the Federal Government explain to me why Janet Feldman should use Kenya’s name to raise funds whose destination is not well-accounted for.

Janet, do not forget that laws here in the USA do work. You may remain in the KCA, but I want to let you know I’ve a right to petition the Federal Government to account for why Kenya’s name is used to raise funds which you don’t fully account for.

Kenya: Residents of Suba region told to convert the fish by-products to process animal feeds

Reports Leo Odera Omolo In Mbita Town.

Residents of Suba region, especially those living in Gwassi and Mbita districts in Homa-Bay County should invent new methods of making animals feed using the fish by-products, which are found in abundance in the area.

This is one way of reducing poverty index which is the highest in the entire Homa-Bay County. Such projects would also contribute immensely towards the eradication of poverty and creation of new jobs for the youths.

These remarks were made at the weekend by Hilary Ochieng’ Alila, a Nairobi based businessman who is also the coordinator of the ODM youths in Luo-Nyanza.

He said akot of fish by-products goes to wasteinstead of eing utikize for the economic gains of the residents.

Alila was speaking during a successful fund drive for Powo SDA Church in Kaksingiri Sindo in Gwassi district where a total of Kshs 175,000 was realized. The money will be utilized in the development an construction of the Powo SDA Church.

He told the congregation that fish by-products such as residues of fillets from the much prized Nile perch and omena {ndaga} could be converted into nutritious animal feeds. This could necessitate the establishment of various animals’ feeds processing plants along the lowland laying location bordering the shorelines of Lake Victoria instead of exporting such raw materials to big towns like Nakuru and Naiobi, Kisumu or Eldoret for the same purpose.

He said Homa-Bay County could strike it rich if all its natural resources, which include minerals and scenery for tourists attractions could be taped and put to a proper use. And this could also generate wealth and reduce the poverty index considerably.

Alila was accompanied by the former MP for Gwassi Hon Felix Nyauchi and a large number of ODM youth leaders from Karachuonyo, Kasipul-Kabondo, Rangwe, Mbita, Gwassi and Ndhiwa constituencies.

He urged the youths who have attained the ages of 18 to take the national identity cards to enable them to register as voters. By doing so you will make our beloved party leader Raila Amolo Odinga realizes his presidential ambition in the year 2012. Many youth in the region have not take up their national identity card, which is an important component of securing voting cards when the registration of voters commences.

He said the ODM is confidence of winning the next general election and forming the next government on its own and not amorphous coalition.

He told the youth to work hard by assisting their parents cultivate land for the planting of cash minting crops like cotton, and to avoid the bad habit of roaming while spreading deadly rumors against the elected leaders. “Hard work is the key not to success and not the empty political slogans and gossips,” he added.

Alila who has already declared his interests in the Homa-Bay County Senate seat hail from Rapedhi area of Ndhiwa district and is the second son of the prominent teachers and long-serving KNUT branch executive Secretary for the old lager South Nyanza district branch. His father the late Nelson Onyango Alila was also a sports personality having served in the Southern Nyanza KFF and at one time a fine footballer.

goinghomedotcom Trust in danger of being auctioned off.

by David Odera Ogot on Thursday, 27 January 2011 at 10:30

We (the goinghomedotcom Trust) are on the brink of being auctioned due to rent arrears. More than ten years work, building the organisation from scratch, with one addict (me) to now a total of 22 volunteers (18 addicts 4 affected) with no funding it finally looks like we are finally going down. It makes me sad, but more it shows that Kenyans are still in denial over alcoholism and other drug addiction. They only talk about how they are suffering from its effects, but when it comes to doing something – SILENCE!

I’m wondering about the office i.e. the goinghomedotcom Trust, the office I founded immediately after leaving rehab for drug addiction way back in February 4th 2001.

My dream was an organisation of addicts and those affected that would put a face to alcoholism (and other drug addiction) so as to eradicate stigma which is one of the main barriers to families and their loved one’s getting help.

I was told be everybody that I needed funding before I started but I ignored this ‘sage’ advice as I was burning to help others as I had been helped.

Was informed that with no funding I would not last 3 months.

Well we are still open ten years later running purely on faith. Now we are facing imminent closure due to rent arrears.

What is sad is that in spite of appeals on TV, Capital Talk on K24 (see www.youtube.com/K24) and to others Kenyans just wring their hands but nobody wants to bite the bullet.

I’m sad, I’m pissed off, but one thing I’m thankful for all of us at the office are still sober. We are stressed out yes, but no one has thought of drinking or using other drugs and for that, I thank God.

KENYA: HOMA-BAY COUNTY SHOULD NOT BE USED AS THE DUMPING GROUND FOR RETIREES BUT NEED CREDIBLE AND ENERGETIC YOUNG TECHNOCRATS TO MAKE IT A VIBRANT FACILITY.

Report by Leo Odera Omolo in Oyugis Town.

The newly created Homa-Bay County should not be turned into a dumping ground for retirees and deadwoods who have already been kicked out of public and private sectors.

“The new County is endowed with a lot of natural resources, which can make it one of the richest in the Republic if proper people are put in the right places in connection with its governance.”

The above remarks were made at the week end by Dr. Mark Matunga, an executive with the Microsoft Computer International, when he addressed a fund raising meeting in aid of Kasipul-Kabondo students who are studying for degree courses at Kampala International University and other institutions of higher learning in Uganda. The students numbering about 130 had called for Harambee to enable them off-set their fees in arrears at those institutions.

A total of Kshs 525,000 was raised by Dr. Matunga, who stood as the chief guest on behalf of the invited Guest of honor, Mr. Fidel Raila Odinga, made a personal donation of Kshs 50,000 and Mr Fidel Raila Odinga sent a cheque for Kshs 50,000. The students themselves had raised Kshs 240,000 at their various activities. Kasipul-Kabondo MP Oyugi Maguwanga sent Kshs 20,000.

Other donors were Dr. Onyango, who is a senior lecturer at the Kampala International University, who gave 10,000, Dr Kambona Oyugi, of the USAID, 10,000, Maseno University students, 10,000, Nairobi University, 10,000, Egerton University, 10,000, Mrs Eve Obara, the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Literature Bureau, gave 5000.

Those in attendance at the function Included the former Kasipul- Kabondo MP, William Oloo Otula, Tom Okong’o, of Central Kabondo Ward in Rachuonyo County Council, several civic leaders, DO In-charge of Oyugis and others.

Dr.Matunga said that when he is elected the governor of Homa-Bay County he would establish a vibrant Education Fund, which will be disbursing money to the needy students, and all those with ambition of furthering their knowledge.

He said the new constitution dispensation has given every Kenyans an opportunity to acquire more knowledge. It has created Counties where the local residents would be able to run their own affairs. The funding of Counties, to enable them to function well and cater for the residents, would need credible people who could look for resources from outside. It also will be the duty of the County governor and his team to organise how to generate revenue from internal sources of the resources. The people in the top position must be credible and well known, both locally and internationally, so that they could access financial and development funds both internally and externally.

“A heavy task lies ahead and this task does not required retired and tired politicians and ex-civil servants, but people with fresh ideas who could brain-storm and workout for plans and strategies for the new County to enable it prosper,” said Dr. Matunda.

He advised his audience to confront those aspiring for the various positions of governance in the Homa-Bay County with tough questions about their past track records and what they have been doing for the community.

He advised the youth to engage themselves in gainful occupations, and to work hard and prepared themselves for the future leadership. He decried the culture of handout, which he said is promoting laxity and idleness

He explained how he had personally initiated the construction of a new road network on Mfangano Island, his rural home, and another Kshs 2 billion involving the electricity supplies, which is generated by a powerful engine, though he had worked for only five years since his return home from the US five years ago.

Kenya: Uriri voters told to choose wisely and avoid electing politically mediocres

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Awendo Town.

RESIDENTS or Uriri constituency in the County of Migori were at the weekend advised to cast their votes wisely when electing leaders who will represent their views in all organs of governance in order to provide them with a bright future like any other Kenyan communities,

Addressing a well attended Harambee funds drive in aid of Obama Migingo Primary School, a Nairobi businessman who is also an executive of an NGO, Mr Martin Owiny, advised his audience not to waste their time discussion issues related to the future governance within their country. Instead, they should redouble their efforts in farming and other gainful activities.

Owiny, who was the chief guest, made a personal donation of Kshs 50,000. A total of Kshs 279,580 was realized. Other donors were George Ocholla Kshs 10,000,Peter Jobando 10,000,Mark Nyamita of Zain 10,000..Kevin Otieno ,the MD of Clrive Flowers Exporters gave 10,000 and R Owiny of Safaricom10,000.

In attendance were Zachary Okoth Obado, the Awendo zonal director with the Kenya Sugar Board, Ezra Olodi Odondi of the Kenya Sugar cane Growers Union who is an aspirant for the Migori Country governor. Also in attendance were civic leaders from Migori,Uriri and Nyatike districts.

Mr Owiny spoke at length about the importance of early children education to have the young be prepared for higher education.

He also touched an issue with declining standard of educations in Luo-Nyanza, adding that the region for many years was the home of most academic giants of Kenya and urged the locals to thrive in order to have this trend reversed.

He told his audience that the new constitution dispensation has created so many important positions within the Counties, and the locals could only benefit from it when they choose the right persons to represent their interests in all the top organs of the state from the Senate, National Assembly, and County governors.

“It is time for the electorate to shift from electing politically mediocre people who could not articulate their interests effectively to the relevant authorities.”

“This time around”, said Mr Owiny “the wananchi will have to choose their representatives wisely to avoid electing people with questionable academic backgrounds simply because such people had a lot of ill-gotten money for dishing out to the electorate, and thereafter they vanished up in the thin air not to be seen or heard of by the suffering constituents”.

Owiny said Uriri is an agricultural rich district, but its access and feeder roads are in pathetic state and needed to be repaired to enable the farmers could easily access market places for their farm products. The district needs more dispensaries, health centers and other essential social amenities for its people.

He advised the parents to spend their earning from farm produce, such as tobacco and sugarcane, wisely in paying school fees and other educational levies for their school going children.

“The future of this country lies in the hand of the children who are the leaders of tomorrow therefore they must be prepared properly in all academic fields to enable them to make significant contributions to the development of the country” said Mr Owiny.

At the same time Kenya’s keynote motto of success should be “hard work less talks as the foremost task” of expediting development. Political leaders should respect each other and give proper guidance to the Wananchi.

Kenya: World AIDS Marathoner providing dinner dances for 750 orphans

From: Richard Brodsky

you are invited to dine & dance with 750 orphans at Kendu Bay (ancestral home of President Obama’s great-grandfather) and Kisumu, Kenya on November 29 and 30. The orphan dinner dances are being sponsored by the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation thanks to the generosity of

Maidenbaum Property Tax Reduction Group, LLC
Five Towns Community Chest
Omar Rodriguez / Associated Food Stores of Long Beach, New York &
UN General Realtors Group, LLC, Owen and Ethel Robinson

If other donors would be interested in co-sponsoring an orphan dinner dance for 375 orphans, a donation of $500 would be required. It would make a nice Thanksgiving gift, early Chanukah or Christmas present knowing that you and someone you love opted to provide 375 orphans a nourishing meal instead of adding a piece of jewelry to a collection. Imagine what that jewelry item would say if it could speak, ‘Why did you pick me? I cannot place a smile on a child’s face nor can I provide an evening of dining or dancing for a single orphan.

Register Now for the 2010 World AIDS Marathon, co-sponsored by the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation and Kisumu World AIDS Marathon Group, and you will also be entitled to roundtrip transportation to two orphan dinner dances from Kisumu, Kenya to local Kenyan orphanages

Hi November 22, 2010

To all my friends and sponsors, we’re really much more than just a marathon, the Foundation’s mission is to improve the lives of people affected by HIV and cancer, especially children. Please consider making a donation to the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation so my wife Jodi and I can continue to visit Africa and sponsor orphan dinner dances for the Kenyan orphans. It costs about $4 per child to provide a nourishing meal with music and dancing. Perhaps you would like to join Jodi and me and experience firsthand the joy of knowing you are really making a difference in the lives of hundreds of orphans.

The Richard M. Brodsky Foundation has sponsored orphan dinner dances for 1,950 Kenyan orphans since 2006.

If you would like to co-sponsor an orphan dinner dance kindly submit a $500 donation online by Thanksgiving. To commemorate your generosity I will send you an 18 X 24 poster with photos of the Event with your name on the poster to acknowledge your gift, or if you choose you may provide someone else’s name on the poster. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated and may be submitted by

– mailing a check to the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation,
1247 Mara Court, Atlantic Beach, NY 11509

– visiting the Foundation’s website and clicking on the
PayPal link for World AIDS Marathon or

– visit the World AIDS Marathon website
and click on the Donate link

The Richard M. Brodsky Foundation has committed $1,000 in prize money for the World AIDS Marathon. This is a very small amount of money as Kenyans are used to participating in running events where the prize package is much greater. It took me awhile to understand why is prize money being provided as this money is being taken from money that could be given to charity. The fact is for Kenyans to succeed, many of them turn to running and the successful Kenyan runners are very charitable and giving when it comes to helping people living in Kenya. If anyone would be interested in donating $500 or $1,000 in prize money, an 18 X 24 poster acknowledging your donation will be presented to you. See two photos above with text instructions in red on how to donate.

Special thanks to NY State Senator Dean Skelos for writing me a very nice note this week. It is these types of letters of support which make me realize ‘Failure is not an option’ and my job is to finish the marathon. I never did quite understand why G-d permitted HIV and brain cancer to change my life as there are millions of people who he could have chosen who were more well known, more religious, more tolerant, etc. Honestly, I think rather than being chosen; it was more of a random choice. I promise to do my part and keep running if you promise to help support people whose lives have been affected with HIV and cancer, both in Africa and America.

The rest of this news release is the same as another news release I sent out recently so if you have been reading my news releases, you need not need further.

The stigma of AIDS is much worse in Africa than in America as families often times throw the person living with AIDS out of the home. That’s another reason why Jodi and I travel to Kenya to show that AIDS has not destroyed our family and when someone is living with a so-called-life-threatening illness, that is the time for families to come together.

Living in America, I do not consider my being HIV-positive to be a life threatening illness since I have access to the AIDS medicine and follow-up medical care. I also have access to clean drinking water and adequate nutritious food. Clearly, this is not the case for Africans and to the small extent that I can help get the word out about the plight of people living with AIDS, and the problems of malaria, tuberculosis and poverty facing Africa, I feel compelled to help because I realize had I been born in Africa, my children might be three of the 11,400,003 orphans living in sub-Saharan Africa who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. I also am extremely grateful that I am surviving terminal brain cancer for 7 years and I made a promise if my life was spared, I would do everything to help others living with HIV or cancer; hence the three orphan dinner dances the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation co-sponsored with Associated Food Stores of Long Beach, New York; ASAP Screenprinting of Gainesville, Florida, and KenShop Bakery of Kisumu, Kenya.

Many groups such as FACES brought their own banners.

An ecstatic Jodi Brodsky after finding out she finished 4th for the female runners for the full marathon. Richard Brodsky and Alie Eleveld, both congratulating Jodi.
Richard Brodsky finished dead last but then again I was the oldest runner.

The World AIDS Marathon and related Events were attended by over 1,950 people. Pictured below is 1 of 15 athletes with disablities; the real heroes of the day.

-300+ runners signed up for the Marathon and Half Marathon and there were 254 finishers.
-250 children participated in the 5k Childrens Walk.
-700 orphans participated in orphan dinner dances at Reach-Out Orphan Support Center, Hope Initiative and St. Claire’s orphanage.
-700+ people (exact number to be determined) were tested for AIDS

15 wheelchair athletes completed the marathon / half marathon and were each awarded 1,000 shillings, about $13. Not a bad deal considering the entry fee was only 50 shillings, about 65 cents and all participants received an Event t-shirt. The balance of the $1,000 prize money was awarded to the top 5 male / female participants of the half and full marathon. Special thanks to Bank of Africa for also providing 60,000 kenya shillings, $800 in prize money. The winning wheelchair participant for the full marathon finishing in a time of 03:06:09 was Pius Otieno Ochieng, pictured above, and for the half marathon, Mildred Auma, in a time of 01:51:49, took home the GOLD. First place winners for the following races were:

Marathon (male) Peter Kipkoech 2:27:56
Marathon (female) Helen Chenonges 3:12:23 repeat winner from 2008
Half Marathon (male) Elijah Tirop 1:06:08

Half Marathon (female) Susan Kiplagat 1:27:26

All runners also received a Certificate of Completion. We were very fortunate to have Douglas Wakiihuri, pictured below, winner of the New York City and London Marathon in the late 1980s presenting prizes to some of the runners.

After the marathon, Jodi and I jogged 4 miles to St. Claire’s Orphanage where the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation co-sponsored an orphan dinner for 86 orphans with KenShop Bakery of Kisumu, just kidding about the 4 mile jog. The photo below at St. Claire’s was taken by Ibrahim Oiro Odero

December 2, 2009. We had a chance to say good-bye to Joseph Ochieng, (above, standing 4th from left) board member of the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation, and six of the 25 orphans he cares for pictured in the green shirts. The two runners dressed in blue were part of a team of Uganda runners who traveled with their coach, William Mungadi, standing third from left.

Farewell lunch at Kiboko Bay Resort, left to right, Joseph Ochieng, Rispah, Jodi and Richard Brodsky and one of my favorite people in Kenya, Beldina Opiyo-Omolo, Public Health Specialist with Millenium Cities Initiative. Beldina is clearly in the minority as she returned to Kenya after graduating from an American college to help her fellow Kenyans.

Prior to Jodi and I visiting Kisumu we spent a day in Nairobi. Saturday, November 28, Jodi and I had the opportunity to visit the local Nairobi Hebrew Congregation and pray that we would run a successful race and we will have the opportunity to run in many more World AIDS Marathons and raise a lot of money for AIDS and cancer charities. We stayed at the President of the Synagogue’s home, Dr. David Silverstein, personal physician to former President of Kenya, Daniel Moi. Jodi and I were fortunate to be there for the Sabbath, and even more fortunate as I was the 10th and final Jewish male to be present so the service could proceed and the Torah was taken out of the ark and read. Part of the charm of the congregation is that it has no Rabbi and each of the 10 +/- regular male members take turns conducting the service. This week the service was conducted by a Jew from Cocina, a Jewish Community in India. Kenya’s only Synagogue even has a website where you can read more about its history and Interfaith relations. These photos were taken from earlier years as it is not permitted to take photos in the Synagogue on the Sabbath.

It was very difficult raising money for this year’s marathon and orphan dinners but Jodi and I decided it was important for us to run the marathon and let the orphans know that we represent people in America who really do care about the orphans in Africa. If you’ve already given a donation to the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation, thank you very much. It is not too late to make your donation now. For $100, you can have your name placed on the commemorative 2010 Event t-shirt, see below, and the shirt will be mailed to you. Special thanks to ASAP Screenprinting of Gainesville, Florida for providing FREE Commemorative Event t-shirts and sweatshirts. Sweatshirts are available for a $125 donation. If you would like an Event t-shirt or sweatshirt kindly submit your donation so it is received before Christmas.

One last way to raise money for the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation. While visiting a friend’s home I came across a forest of flowers which a florist in America typically charges about $8+ per stem. In the picture below there must be about 100 stems of the flower. If anyone could ever find out about selling these flowers, if they have any on their property, to a local flower exporter and donating a portion of the proceeds to the Richard M. Brodsky, your donation will help feed the orphans of Kenya.

Special thanks to a lot of people

I would like to thank President-Elect Barack Obama; President Clinton; Stephen Lewis, former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV / AIDS in Africa; Senator Ted Kennedy; Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy; Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi; and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray for their support for the Foundation’s work which includes its annual World AIDS Marathon held in Kisumu, Kenya as well as the 5k AIDS / Cancer / Survive / Run / Walk in America. These letters can be viewed by visiting the website link, view letters. The American Medical Student Association, AMSA, has also created a story line of the Foundation’s work which can be viewed on FACEBOOK. The One Campaign has also been very supportive of my work. If you are interested in hearing me speak and seeing photos of the Foundation’s work in America, the One Campaign and the American Medical Student Association have covered my speaking fee in the past.

October 24, 2010, FREE 5K AIDS / Cancer Run Walk for HIVers, Cancer Survivors & Friends

The Richard M. Brodsky Foundation will be sponsoring its second annual FREE 5K Run / Walk for HIVers, Cancer Survivors & Friends in Oceanside Park, October 24, 9 AM. The purpose of the run is to get people living with HIV and cancer running or walking. As a brain cancer survivor who is also HIV-positive, no one knows the benefits derived from running more than me. Wouldn’t it be great if we could get participants living with HIV or cancer to run or walk a few miles.

To encourage participants, the Foundation will be providing $45 in toiletry / gift items to everyone, Even if you are healthy, please accept the items and give them to someone living with HIV or cancer during the week. We will also be serving a sumptuous breakfast and everyone who signs up by October 10 will have their name placed on the Event t-shirt. Also, there will be thousands of dollars of FREE raffle prizes given away.

To sign up for the Free Running Event, click here, and then click on the link in the 5th paragrapgh. Events are a great opportunity to collect toys for children.

Please consider making your annual contribution to the Richard M. Brodsky Foundation as the Foundation’s work has become my life’s work. There are no other Presidents of Foundations who are HIV-positive and have brain cancer whose main fundraising activity consists of running marathons. But if running marathons can help raise awareness that hundreds of thousand lives can be saved each year if access to the AIDS medicine is free for people who cannot afford the AIDS medicine, then I have no choice but to continue running marathons.

We are always looking for volunteers so if you’ve managed to read this entire newsletter, we could really use your help. Please contact me, Richard, at the contact information below.
