empowering farmers in the current global crisis

Dear Reader

Farming in Africa has always been a risky business, at the mercy of bad weather, droughts, low productivity, bad politics and non-remunerative, fluctuating farm product prices. The rise in prices of a number of commodities is predicted to continue in future. This should be good for Kenya, its households and policy makers. It is the right moment to prioritize modernization of agriculture as a tool to fight poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 by taking advantage of the global price incentives to boost household incomes.

The recent food price increases has been predicted as doom and gloom for the continent. However, this needs not to be the case. There are medium and long term benefits owing to the commodity price rise for African producers. Kenya’s agriculture accounts to 75% engagement of the population.  Food-related commodity price increases are attracting a lot of global attention. It is feared that over 20 million people, in Kenya, could be severely affected and plunged into deeper poverty.

This is because food crop prices have increased by more than 85% since 2004 and they are predicted  to remain above 2004 levels until 2015. In Kenya, most households are net food producers and could benefit from high food prices through regional food exports. A rise in global bio-fuel’ production (fuel from crops like sugarcane, maize, soybeans and palm oil) especially in the US, Europe and Brazil is another opportunity for Kenya.

With vast unutilized agricultural land, Kenya can grow and cheaply supply bio-fuel crops compared to subsidized and expensive sources in the US and Europe.

The global drive against climate change and the need for energy security will continue to make bio-fuel production a potential source of hope for poverty reduction in Kenya if international and national policy makers seize this opportunity. Kenya could be a global supplier of grains for food and bio-fuels under these price incentives.

The changing diets of middle income Chinese and Indians will push up protein-related food prices like milk, meat, pork and eggs in the long run. China’s GDP growth has averaged more than 9% since 1995. It makes up to 15.4% of the world economy, consumes a-third of the cereals.  with
continued per capita income growth of the ‘Asian drivers’ and change in diets, will lead to a strong rise in demand for commodities, food-especially high-protein foods like meats, dairy products and
vegetable oils thus sustaining price increases.

China and India account for 40% of world commodity consumers and 20% of the global purchasing power. Their consumption of commodities will more than double by 2020. This presents enormous opportunities for Africa’s household commodity producers in form increased farm incomes once strategically tapped.

There is plenty of opportunity for sub-Saharan Africa to turn around its “development puzzle” and get out of poverty by 2015. A country like Kenya can focus on becoming a food basket for the region, focus its Poverty Eradication and Action Plan, organize farm households to produce
economically viable commodity. Poverty eradication programmes should prioritize agriculture to produce strategic commodities that are going to be in high global demand now and in the future. There should be less politics and more organization to produce for both local and international
markets.

The consequences of lack of adequate information have been realized as the biggest handicap to the achievement of profitable farming in the model of farming as a business. The lack of information has also made most of the youth to stay without doing anything economically empowering as they search for employment. This is serious in that they loose out on the
advantages of self employment though Kenya have among the most suitable land for crop production in the world. This can only be changed through empowerment by using the correct methods and practices in farming

It has also made most of the youth to stay without doing anything economically empowering as they search for employment. This is serious in Kenya which comprises a big population of the poor and malnourished. In Kenya, it has manifested itself in ugly confrontations between those who have acquired wealth and those who presume to be poor. This can only be changed through empowerment.

Despite being among the most suited agriculturally potential area, Kenya remains behind in adoption of technology that can greatly improve on their living standards, reduce poverty and eradicate malnutrition. This calls for concerted effort in raising the level of knowledge and understanding on crop production of the farmers in the region.

Initially this was a big challenge due to lack of reliable current and Sustainable information to guide the farmers on correct crop production practices. The new series of agricultural training guides by the name SUCCESS IN AGRICULTURE, bridges the gap that has for long time increased poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. Join the campaign to end hunger and poverty, make the world a better place by giving the farmers the best current farmers guide. Visit www.techno.co.ke  for link to the best guides. SUPPLIERS THREATEN COURT ACTION AGAINST KISUMU MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OVER NON-PAYMENT.

BY   DICKENS  WASONGA IN KISUMU.

OVER ten contractors who got tenders to supply different commodities to the municipal council  of Kisumu have now threatened to go to court to force the local authority to pay them their deus.

The suppliers some of whom said they were owed between ksh. 200,000 to 300,000 vowed to seek redress from the courts because the council has remained adamant to pay them and demanded immediate transfer of the treasurer.

According to one of them who said he supplied stationery worth ksh. 340,000 to the council, their biggest problem has been to  secure audience with the treasurer Mr.  Richard Sang who they claim is never in the office to attend to the publics.

The frustrated supplier said he has made endless visits to the treasures office in abid to agree on how he can be paid in vain.

He showed this writer a copy of a letter he wrote to the clerk to the council Mr. Rashid Mwakiwiwi early this month seeking his intervention for the payment.

He also made available copies of the transactions between him and the civic body which confirms that he indeed delivered the said items to the council but his is yet to be paid.

”  We are forced to come here looking for the treasurer even for over a month, but even when you get to see him,you only get empty promises while his un professional body-guards man handle visitor at the reception..”  he said.

One of them who did not want to be named said it took the personal intervention of the deputy mayor cllr. Pamela  Josy to have him paid.

” I approached the deputy mayor and told her my stories  which was shocking and she took me to the clerk who ordered that I be paid.” he remarked.

The suppliers say they have remained patient with the council for a long time over debt settlement issue where one is allegedly required to offer a kick-back and now they say enough is enough.

According to sources at the city hall, the council recently received ksh. 63m  from the LATF which it has been using to pay salary areas  owed  to  its workers who have not been paid for upto 14 months.

Even leading local print media such as the Kenya Times, Standard and Nation media groups  have not been paid for months for advertisements.

Rev. Otura,

Let us change our perceptions and use all means within our reach to support our leaders (MPs) unite the country. Post election violence has taught us a lesson, we are not ready to drift back again. Lets become agents of peace and justice, as we wait for constitutional reforms. i hope 10th parliament will not let Kenyans down.

My only worry is that the government is concentrating on supporting IDP’s only while those who lost their lives during post election violence across the country have been forgotten and nobody talks about them. They too have left behind people who depended on them. They need to be supported as well, this is the only way justice works.

This is a good proposition, “Unite Our Country”. You are only being a good citizen, and you are. But Which country? GEMA Republic of Kenya or Orange Democratic Republic of Kenya?  A wind breeze blowing around now is to encourage the GEMA and Eastern to secede and form their own country. They are completely incompatible with the rest. We may pretend like it will work and wait for Samolia scenario in the future.  I prefer we come up with more intelligent solution than hypocrisy.  Why would Karua and co. insist that the youths arrested be kept incarcerated while Kivuitu and co. plus police who killed innocent protesters remain free? What about those who misused the state apparatus to suppress the rights of people? i am talking about Me-chuki, Karua, DCs, PCs, etc. Is this not selective justice? What about historic land inequalities and the forced resettlement of IDPs? Can we now talk about Uniting our country? Which country?

That is history. GEMA has persecuted people’s leaders since independence, talk of Mboya, Jaramogi, Raila has spend all his life in detentions, Shikuku, Seronei, Muge, Ouko etc. It is just a matter of time and the guilty will have to be brought to  justice first before we talk of Unity. With who?  All Kenyans know who is the people’s president right now and who are the rapists of democracy and human rights in Kenya. We should for now talk of uniting our people for “Orange
revolution”. Revolt is the only way out. USA had to go through civil war and civil rights war to be where it is today. Those who want peace to come to them in a platter better read history. Kenya must be liberated before any talk of Unity is indulged. Nyanza, Rift-Valley, Western, Cost, North Eastern need to come together in a true coalition that will liberate our people from GEMA.

I know I sound very radical but not more than 1500 innocent killed by Kibaki and more than 400 more going on in mt Elgon.

David & the rest,

I think David you have hit the nail on the head. There is also a conspiracy going on among super powers to re-colonise Africa now. I do think our country Kenya is very strategically located that it might fall among those countries which might be colonised if we Kenyans are still sleeping. Do you think the attitude Martha Karua is having now will really give Kenyans a new constitution or this is just  a joke?. By the way why did PNU insist in all  high portfolio ministries?, including justice and constitution, Defense, security, finance etc. David you have asked a very good questions; WHICH COUNTRY ARE WE UNITING?. Are we uniting a country where mungiki is asked for dialogue while in Nyanza, Rift valley, western and coast youths are in prison or jail without trial?, IDPs are being settled by force?.

If Kenyans are not very careful, we shall be the first African country to be re-colonised, by the way the number of British and USA soldiers in Kenya now are even more than enough to accomplish that mission. So the ego maniacs who are already thinking of who shall be  the next president should think very well where they are heading to…. They might be suprised that the USA or EU are already having their president they will put in Kenya if Kenyans behave the way they did after post election in December 2007.

OLYMPOLITICS-A FLAME GAME OF WESTERN POLITICS.

Dear Editor,

Even before the dust of this year’s Beijing Olympics settles down the 2012 London Olympics has started to attract policy and political interests.

Africa, according to the political spirit of the Olympic games, is like a soccer ball, tennis racket, cricket bat and sprinting shoes for foreign ideologies. Worse still, Africa is the sole undiluted spectator in this game of Olympolitics.

Since the revival of the Olympic Games by Pierre de Coubertin more than a hundred years ago, politics has been taking center stage at the expense of real sporting.

History reminds us of the relationship between this year’s Beijing Olympics and the ‘Nazi Games’ held in Berlin in 1936. Where many were unable to understand the theme that was practically violent politically than sport related.

Only recently US President George Bush used the occasion to try and influence the Chinese government to open dialogue with minority Tibet officials by suggesting that the Dalai Lama and his people be given a pie of democracy and governance. He ironically passed the information through President Hu Jianto who ruthlessly crushed previous protests in Tibet in 1989.

Certainly President Bush was using political tantrums to make the Chinese government change its leadership policies toward Tibet and which is only a tip of well-calculated policy changes on democracy and governance against China.

Such policy games were exacerbated during the 1916 Olympics held in Berlin. When World War I was over, the 1920 Olympics were awarded to Antwerp, Belgium that was a victim of unprovoked political aggression five years before.

The same machinery was applied during the 1936 games held in Berlin where the torch made its first appearance with Hitler’s blessings.

In 1940 the Olympics had been awarded to Tokyo, Japan. Also, in 1980 Moscow games were scheduled before Russia embarked on its fierce invasion of Afghanistan. By that time Japan had invaded Manchuria.

Following the World War II, the 1948 Games went to London as a reward for what the city had endured in the Blitz. It was also used to demonstrate gratitude to the British people for their devoted participation in the atrocity.

The ever adrenaline laced quadrennial event has with it an elitist theme, ‘Keep Sport and Politics Separate’, that only brings forth deceit to athletes and nations with a passion for sports. It seems the spirit is being substituted to mean ‘ Western totalitarianism against Eastern political ideologies’. Unfortunately, Olympics Games only become contentious when the Games are awarded to the likes of Moscow and Beijing leave alone African sporting concerns.

On the other hand it seems that Africa always becomes anaesthetised when it comes to the Olympic Games and its handling of foreign political ideologies. Only recently International Olympic Committee’s Kenya chapter through its boss Dr. Kipchoge Keino ignorantly dismissed the political connection but at on our own detriment. It is time to conceptualize the fact that the political and ideological rights of foreign nations seem to trump and triumph those of sport-savvy, athletic conscious and spirited athletes in Africa and other ‘innocent’ states.

Thus Africarite sport reformers ought to directly be involved in Olympic politics or otherwise extinguish the spirit and flame Africa gives to such politics of such a game.

Africa should not allow foreigners to use the Olympic Games as a political enterprise to influence leadership and democratic policies to foreign nations.

As a practical fact, the much Africa and other nations try to keep sport and politics separate, even through slogans, the two literally bound together ‘chemically’ before and during the Games, with the involvement of foreign politics.

Thus, Africa has a role of neutralizing this discouraging political competition between the West and Eastern parts of the World.

If left unchecked Africa stands to be the sole ‘victim’ of foreign political games and ideologies that would not attract development including industrialization.

Otherwise the seemingly sinister foreign political spirit has a chance to reform with the deep involvement by African nations who view the event differently or Africa would remain to be ‘firewood’ to the foreign neo-politics blanketed under the banner of Olympics Games.

THE TERM OF COALITION IS JUST BUT ONE YEAR, ITS OVER

I must be totally blind not to see the light at the end of this tunnel. And  I forfeit my right whatsoever to  ever, ever and forever find out if I am really blind . For blindness is  subjective and not objective. May be my lenses is not just that refractive. But when Raila refers to those who “perpetrated violence” during the post-election crisis as “those who fought for democracy” while Martha Karua refered to them as “criminals” who must be brought to book” , my democratic feelers went to an  high alert mode. Alert mode because I already predicted the fall of this empire. The coalition has outlived its time and has become a  sheer irritation of an old wound.  It is like a giant elephant trophy that  occupiers a valuable space in the room. Those who cannot recognize this are living in the past and are hoping for an angel  Gabriel breakthrough.

Last night I read of PNUians supporting Kalonzo for president while the night before Musalya Mudavadi was declaring Raila Odinga as the sole candidate for 2012 presidency. Raila was declaring the grand opposition illegal . Kiraiuti was endorcing Kalonzo while Karua was doing the same to Uhuru. I deserve an explanation for this level of commotion in this political arena. Like Jesus always said , lets those who have eyes see. Jesus meant internal eyes. I still hope I have those and if you do not have them then we cannot prolong this argument. The coalition is as dead as a dodo. Kalonzo want a presidency, Uhuru and Raila want the same. The three are in the government and do not want to hear anything about an a formal opposition. If this is not a failier then I will never be in a position to describe one.

There are too many unknowns in the equation of this coasition. The coalition was simply meant to bring peace into the country. It has achieved its goal. The prolonging of the coaltion may start a new circle of this circle. The reason why camps are beginnig to form is because non reconcilable differences have been recognized. Kibaki is out and the rest are sorting themselves out.

Its time we have a real contest. Lets disolve this thing  see how Riala performes againste Kalonzo. May be we will find out who will actually solve Kenyan problems

MUSYOKA IS THE WINNER HERE

Call him Judas Iscariot (and he is), but he is today closer to Presidency both in proximity and position wise than Raila.  Musyoka has learnt that the only people he needs to please is GEMA where his votes can come from.  Now I do not agree with it but I think it is a brilliant manouvre because with GEMA AND KAMBA Musyoka might be the next president. However in the other hand there is Raila who is more interested in pleasing other people even if that means he loose support of ODM constituency. So Musyoka is really the winner here.

Okoth,

I do not see any bright future for Kenya unless they go MAJIMBOISM. Kenyans (especially PNU) have already forgotten what caused the post election violence and some are even ready to move forward without solving the problem. PNU MPs and ministers are already behaving as if they are the government while ODM is  still the opposition party. 4 and a half years remaining before the 2012 election will just be for looting and making strategies to capture the presidential post. They are very clever they want Mungiki to have a dialogue ( an indirect way of giving mungiki amnesty until 2012 just to be used again). One clever fool who one day  woke up and became clever said this sentence: `A FOOL IS ONLY HE or SHE WHO NEVER LEARNS FROM HIS MISTAKES`.

From: chris owala
Subject: Re: Regional News

YALA SWAMP -A “Living Museum of Biodiversity
The Yala Swamp is a vast wetland region (over 200 square km) which cleans and filters waters that flow into Lake Victoria from two major rivers. It has been called a “Living Museum because it provides critical habitat for endangered fish species that have disappeared from Lake Victoria itself. The critically endangered Sitatunga Antelope finds refuge among the swamps’ papyrus. Birdlife International classifies the Yala Swamp among Kenya’s 60 “Important Bird Areas, and a 2005 World Bank report concluded that the significance of the region’s biological diversity “cannot be stressed strongly enough.

For centuries, thousands of families have depended on the wetland for clean water, fishing, grazing and agricultural land, and the papyrus that they weave into mats, baskets and thatch roofs. “ “

The Yala Swamp conflict started in 2003 when regional government authorities granted a 25-year lease for rice cultivation to Dominion Farms Ltd, a subsidiary of Dominion Group of Companies based in Edmond, Oklahoma USA. Authorities approved the company’s Environmental Impact Assessment specifically for rice irrigation in a 2,300 hectare-area (about 12% of the Yala Swamp territory). But almost immediately Dominion began building irrigation dikes and a weir, airstrips and roads, and announced plans to build a hydroelectric plant and a major aquaculture venture, including fish farms, a fish processin g factory and a fish mill factory, all of which could damage a fragile ecosystem far beyond the designated 2300ha Dominion wants control over 65% of Yala Swamp for its expanded “integrated project. Some of this area is privately owned by hundreds of families. Some of it is used communally, including the species-rich waters of Lake Kanyaboli which is critical for food security in the region. Action Aid Kenya and the Kenya Land Alliance say the company has in effect privatized the lake and public roads, blocking lake access to over 200 fishermen and impeding access to schools, markets and health clinics. Residents say their protests have been met forcibly with arrests and teargas.

Although no Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) had been approved for these additional Dominion enterprises, they were well underway in early 2006 when scientists in the Kenya Wetlands Forum undertook a “Rapid Assessment of the Yala Swamp Wetlands. The scientists’ report raises hundreds of unanswered questions about Dominion Farms’ potential impacts on human health and the environment. Likely impacts cited in the report include altering the flow of Yala River, contamination of soils through oil leakages and spillage, pollution of the wetland ecosystem, loss of grazing land, lost of pristine fauna and flora through chemical use and aerial spraying, rising incidences of water- and vector-borne diseases, and social unrest. The report urges Kenya ’s National Environment Management Authority to immediately close down all Dominion Farms activities and requi re new and independent EIAs to be conducted for each separate project proposed by the company.
Many homes have been flooded by the dominion groups of company living women and children homeless in the name of development
Concerns from the community

1)  That the management of Dominion Farms Limited have deliberately chosen not to engage or consult the community on its project implementation and development yet they are seriously being affected directly.

2)  That Dominion Farms Limited being a multi national company is hell-bent on forcefully taking away ancestral land without owners consent nor following legal procedures, which is a serious basic human rights violation.

3)  That the company (Dominion Farms Limited) has adopted unorthodox means of using threats through proxies, intimidation, police arrests (on trumped up charges ranging from incitement to violence to malicious damaged to private property ) and bribery as a means of silencing and coercing indigenous people to give away the only  livelihood

4)   That our leaders (politicians, church leaders and government officers) have failed us totally in the course of this struggle and are instead working in cahoots with the multinational to disposes community off their land and the only source of livelihood.

5) That the local press has been compromised and has adopted partisan approach in reporting the Yala Swamp issues to the favour of Dominion Farms Limited to the disadvantage of the aggressed (community).

6)  That the project is being carried out without an independent approved environmental Impact Assessment report done by National Environmental Authority (NEMA).

7) That aerial spraying done by the company on the farms using DDT has severe health and environmental impacts with some of the community members already affected.

8)  That blockage of river Yala and Lake Kanyaboli and Yala swamp will deny indigenous people access to water (for domestic use and for our animals) and grazing land which will have a very serious economic impact on our livelihood.

9)   That clearing of the Yala Swamp papyrus which is the home to many wild life species including endangered ones like statunga and papyrus gonolek and breeding grounds for many birds is of great concern.

10)  Clearing of the papyrus will also have negative side economic effects on the indigenous since they have always used these plants to make mats for sale and use locally.

11) Dominion group of company once more have use the government to detain 278 head of cattle’s belonging to 40 members of the community at Siaya police station, the owners are to be charged with trespass. The situation at which the animals are kept at the police station is worrying and already some deaths have been reported.

How can we help?
Friends of the Yala Swamp, a coalition of residents and organization sand community Initiative Action Group-Kenya thinks that Kenya authorities need to be lobbied to protect people’s livelihoods and the Yala Swamp wetlands, as they are obliged to do under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
On behalf of the above organizations we are appealing for ideas on how the community can be assisted in protecting their livelihoods.

All,

I have followed Dominion Farm’s activities since 2002 and even met some of the principals in 2003.
I have also listened and read a lot written by those opposed to and for the project. The politics of Dominion is also all over the place. Just recently, a year or two ago, a few Kenyans on this forum visited with Burgess in Oklahoma and on their return all they wrote were good things about the project. I guess they are quiet now because any comment about Dominion usually elicits cruel and personal attacks. The same maybe true about being on the opposite side of the activists and that’s why the debates usually get personal than factual. Well, I’m going to put on a hard hat and cup in you know where and make some comments that has been causing me leny.

Now and then I would read something written by Chris Owalla and I feel like I need to pick up my rungu and go fight on behalf of these people of Yala suffering at the hands of the Dominion Farms.
If I hear that my rwath currently in my village is taken to “jail as in the case of Yala rwedhi, I would risk arrest to get it out. As I was getting worked up by the last article Owalla wrote, I became a little curious of its scientific nature. When I dug deeper it turned out that parts of the article is right out of
the pages of Global Response website http://globalresponse.org/gra.php?i=2/07. Global Response mission is to “empowers people of all ages, cultures, and nationalities to protect the environment by creating partnerships for effective citizen actionâ€?. By reading Dominion’s mission (“committed to producing the finest quality foods and agricultural by-products —-“), you would know that Global Response and Dominion will always be on the opposite sides. Dominion has to use the land that Global Response wants to be left alone. I do not know the connection between Owalla and Global Response and or Action Aid but my heart skipped a beat when the two names popped up in the same article.  I remember one of them campaigning against Odino Falls. My heart missed a beat because I believe that it’s about time we create our own Kenyan grown activism instead of jumping on the backs of Action Aid and Global Response. We don’t have the same environmental priorities.
Anyway, staying with Owalla’s note he went ahead and listed some concerns from the Yala community and  two of them caught my wang’a:
9)   That clearing of the Yala Swamp papyrus which is the home to many wild life species including endangered ones like statunga and papyrus gonolek and breeding grounds for many birds is of great concern

10)  Clearing of the papyrus will also have negative side economic effects on the indigenous since they have always used these plants to make mats for sale and use locally.

Now, deep inside Luoland, in an area where there has never been any profitable tourist activity and Yala people’s main concern is SITATUNGA ANTELOPE and PAPYRUS GONOLEK!!. Well, this reminds me of Leakey days at Kenya Wildlife when human beings were jailed for killing dangerous animals but no punishment was given to the animals that mauled human beings. There has to be a choice and sometimes it’s so obvious what Yala people would chose as opposed to the choice of Global Response. To a certain extent, Yala HOMO SAPIENS maybe as endangered as TRAGECEPHALUS TEKII if poverty is not eliminated. I believe this place is a stone throw away from the home of Kenya Tourism Board MD, ONG’ONGA ACHIENG’ ONEKO and if there was any viable tourism, he would have jumped on it. Growing up on the land of animals I always believed that my relationship with the wild animals is that I am either their dinner or they are mine depending on who overpowers the other.

My home is only a few yards from Lake Victoria, habitat of the dangerous OSTEOLAEMUS TETRASPAS (NYANG) and yards and yards of PAPYRUS GONOLEK (TOGO) in which lives some of the longest and largest ngielos (cobra/snakes) I have ever seen in my life. You could see the delight in our eyes when the Lake Victoria receded and the GONOLEK disappeared. In as much as we used the togo to ruwo par (make mats)  it is simply no comparison to the economic impact of the rice project. If that’s the case I would be busy with my par business right now than pounding on this keyboard.

I would fight side by side with Owalla against Dominion for concerns 1-8,11  and especially number 7 where chemicals are introduced into the environment. But when Global Response’s concern for birds and animals dilutes the concern of the Yala people, I put my rungu down.

I wanted to educate myself further on the Yala Swamp issue so I searched and run into a biodiversity study done on Lake Kanyaboli by Romulus Abila, a Zoologist from Maseno University
http://iodeweb1.vliz.be/odin/bitstream/1834/1272/1/RAbila2005-11.pdf . In this paper is a picture of the shores of Lake Kanyaboli and anybody who has ever used papyrus to make mats would never use these reeds. Maybe there is another area with better ones but this looks like an area where human beings can only approach by boat. Was this part of the swamp ever used at all by the people of Yala it was impassable before Dominion arrived? Abila’s table shows that only 28% of Yala people are involved in mat business and nobody was listed under endangered species of antelope or birds. Infact Abila is more concerned with threats to biodiversity and the disappearance of cichlids (fulu?) on Laka Kanyaboli.
This scholar has written extensively on the subject and I didn’t read most of it but conservation seems to be the concern.

I also read some rapid assessment done by Kenya Wetland Society
 http://www.eawildlife.org/programme_areas/Yala%20Assesment%20Report.pdf. KWS main concern
is that ecological and hydrological functions of the swamp may be permanently damaged and that will put the livelihood of the people around the swamp in danger. Again they mentioned the endangered species, you could see my eyes roll. Well, Kenyans must really like these animals. They should then be demonstrating at the gates of Carnivore restaurant and Safari Park in Nairobi where all kinds of animals are consumed by the tourist after watching the endgaered antelopes at Yala. each day. Infact if Yala people feasted on the antelopes at the Carnivore rate,  they would all be gone and maybe Global Response would not have cared about Yala. The antelopes have no impact on the lives of Yala people. This paper contains good
pictures of the work going on at Domino Farms. Its hard to look at these pictures of high tech breeding of ngege and see something wrong with it. This is the kind of technology I can use on my side of Lake Lolwe.
The assessors also listed about 20 names of stakeholders that they talked to. The list comprises chiefs, councillors, DOs and a handful of ordinary Otieno or Onyango. Everybody had a title including Opinion Leaders, the community was not represented. For an area with over 700,000 people, talking to 20 people is just not statistically significant enough to determine the opinion of the community..

One other factor that keep coming up in all these papers is the fact that Dominion is using more acres than they were aloted. While these papers mention that Dominion was only allowed to use 2,300 ha, Dominion on their site http://www.dominion-farms.com/index.html mentions that they are working on 17,000 ha.
There is also mention that Yala Swamp area is actually 38,000 – 52,000 ha but the activist lists only 17,000 ha 65% of which Dominion is using. If the actual ha is between 38-52 which is 45,000 ha then Dominion is only using way less than half of the swamp. That leaves enough room for SITATUNGA ANTELOPE and PAPYRUS GONOLEK which also means that  the animal antelope, the reed plants and the Yala man can co-exist in the same environment if the noise is controlled and there is no pollution. Now these facts needs to be streamlined so that we can get the real story about Yala Swamp. It will be only fair to include a copy of the environmental assessment that was done so that we can see what Dominion is violating.

My quest in all this was to find a balance of information that could help me understand the problem Yala people and  Dominion Farms, if any. There seems to be more activism and academia in these studies than a balanced research that is looking at the economic versus environmental benefits. My comments may looks like they favor Dominion but in actuality that’s where the info that I got is pointing me to. Infact if this is the only info out there then there is very little to oppose the project. Activisim is another matter and you can always find something wrong with anything because that’s the engine of activism.

Again, its about time we create our own Kenyan grown activism instead of jumping on the backs of Action Aid and Global Response. I would actively campaign for retaining fulu and omena before I blink an eye for antelope or winyo of any kind even if one of them was my pet. Just like the support or technology we get from the west, we have to be able to decide if its good for us be it from Global Response or Dominion. It should not depend on who shouts the loudest and have the political backing.
I was surprised how summarily Owalla dismissed what Prof. Olweny wrote. It would have helped very  much if Owalla offered more info on what Hon. Olweny wrote because that’s what the good professor did on what Owalla wrote. Well, maybe some day I will need Owalla, Global Response, and Action
Aid to protect my village against  some developer but I will make sure we don’t have mixed concerns.

I end this long note by asking our scientists and business people to evaluate this project with a balanced mind and find out the truth. Find out how it wa sdone at Ahero Pilot Scheme, Mwea Tebere (sp), Tana River and all those same projects across Kenya and the world.

Dear Nyanja

Am not sure whether I know you or not but there is one Nyanja that was copted by Dominion into the stakeholders community  that was put in place by provincial administration two weeks ago, what I want to bring to your attention is that, the issue of yala swamp is very complex, to some people the company is granary as well as source of water for thirst.

Kanyango and kanyamaji  villages   are also affected with the work of this company, for your information the dominion is not keen to invest in corporate social responsibility and that is why the former director was fired and its also difficult for politicians to help the common man, and am not surprised with your piece, one thing that you need to know is that no one owns the community, and Jesus also was controversial because he advocated for the poor, if you see me dismissing Muhoronii MP don’t be surprised because am simply trying to help  the poor get justice, what is worrying is that most of our leaders here in Nyanza are part and parcel of Dominion hence it will be very difficult for them to bridge between the community and the so called investor.

Our activism is very positive, for your information its people’s centre, for your information am also coming from alego and I don’t thing you are better placed to speak for community more than me if anything its healthy to take different path depending on your understanding of development,

As part of dominion CSR they were to built schools, hospitals and road networks and five years down the lane there is nothing to count, but community has lost livelihoods, cows and goats have died even people. The impact of dominion farms if not checked then effected will be very devastating ,

When a multinational decides to arrest community plus the cows on trump up charges then something is wrong, when you invest in the midst of a community the best thing to do is to have respect for that community even if they are poor and un educated.

In One of my discussions with Siaya OCS I do remember   him telling me that the people of kandege have not gone to school that is why they could not get fair deal from the dominion and hence outsiders have taken all the top cream .

What we have been asking for is CSR,and strong out growers system to support the farmers, dominion was to give 3000 bags of maize to the community around the swamp or set aside 300 acres for community use but nothing is working on nowise seems the Calvin has gotten short cut way of bribing professionals and political leaders and that is why the conflict will never go..

There is no meaning in life for the community that are affected around yala swamp, and the worst problem is that no single member of  this community that is owning title deed hence they are unable to use land to acquire loans from the bank for personal development

The issue of land is very fluid and must be handle with gloves if the conflict is to be solved, The arrest of respected, law-abiding community leaders has had a devastating impact on our communities, particularly on the families of those incarcerated.

The community are the peoples of the land – we have a legal and moral obligation to protect for future generations and we ask Government to do what it can to ensure safety of the community and protect their  livelihoods

We Support the connection that Indigenous values, knowledge and activities are the environmental measurement that any commercial and industrial activity must be held accountable to in order to preserve ecological biodiversity.

We Support Indigenous Peoples’ right to “free, prior and informed, consent as the basis of protecting the ecological biodiversity of their territories.

We Condemn the violations of the government plus dominion and call for the immediate and unconditional  dropping of trump charges on the community members. The three-Charles Onyango Apiyo, Aloice Waka Otieno and Otieno Okumu were arraigned in Siaya court on Monday 21st April 2008 before Siaya Principle Magistrate Mr.Mwaura. They were charged with malicious damage to property, tresspass on private property and grazing.

Section of desperate Mt Kenya politicians now supports “Judas Iscariot” to succeed Kibaki

The political realignment in Kenya is now taking a new awkward shape among the Gema community, as the fight of succession of Kibaki takes another angle.

The Vice President, Hon Kalonzo “Judas Iscariot”, the man whose phone call to Kiviutu ( ECK)  triggered the 2007 post election violence,(that has left thousands of Gikuyus and other Kenyans dead, homeless or refugees ), recently staged dramatic coup deta’t, to lead the confused Gikuyus community after Kibaki.

The “Judas Iscariot, renown a political gymnastic” has taken advantage of the grumbling among the Gikuyus political leadership, to wrap up his ambition to succeed President Kibaki from the back door.

The recently stage managed endorsement of Kalonzo by the section of the light weight Gema leaders, clearly illustrates that he has abandoned the principles held by the grand coalition government deal, and is now seeking a political power base for his Orange Democratic Party of Kenya ( ODM-K) come 2012 general election.

Mr Kalonzo and his group are political opportunists who follow every political twist and turns to seize power in the expense of lives of impoverish Kenyan tax payers.

Kenyans must therefore, note that without new majimbo constitution before next general election 2012 there will be another major political crisis.

The Grand Conspiracy

Following the blood letting that we witnessed after the last general elections, ODM and PNU as the protagonists came together, and our Principals, HE Hon Mwai Kibaki, and HE Hon Raila Odinga signed a truce which saw the birth of the Grand Coalition.

Thereafter, a cabinet of 42 persons was named in which ODM and PNU shared the positions 50/50. A list of Assistant Ministers was also named that saw the sharing of all those named positions 50/50.

This was being done on the basic realization that we had a problem in Kenya that we had to jointly fix as one people. This was the right thing to do, since, by killing each other, we were clearly moving to the precipice.

Our Principals saw this clearly and hence guided their respective parties into this Grand Coalition.

After the cabinet was named, people who thought that they would be named in the cabinet felt slighted, and started agitating for what they have been calling a Grand Opposition Coalition.

I bet they have missed the point, and no amount of English from Hon Ababu, with all due respect, can mitigate their case. They are simply being selfish. If they are in such variant positions from our principals, the best they can do is to resign and seek fresh mandates from their own parties other than ODM and PNU.

By seeking fresh mandates, we will all be assured that they have some conviction, and those who support their ill motives, can vote for them in those parties.

You can effectively check the operations of the government from within, and as we do this, we must look at the circumstances that make us seek the kind of union that we have put in place.

By forming a Grand Coalition Government, President Kibaki and PM Raila were just responding to the demands of the time. We had fought, we had killed, we had burned, we had displaced and we had raped. All in the name of seeking to be declared the winner or to retain power.

If the two Principals saw it prudent to save Kenya from the misery of killing each other, from the misery of raping our own, from the misery of wanton destruction, then surely, there was enough need to come together as one, and fix these problems as one people.

In so doing, they realized the ultimate calling that Kenya is by far more superior to an individual taking over the reigns of power amidst the kind of mayhem we all saw. The Principals realized that we all need each other alive, not dead.

Pray, what then makes Ababu and team to call for a Grand Opposition Coalition? I know that most of them were disappointed that they were not named into the cabinet. But is that enough for them to slight the parties that supported their bid into parliament?

I bet not.

In fronting for this Grand Opposition Coalition, I sense some Grand Conspiracy, a conspiracy of losers, people who love themselves more than they love the country.

All Kenyans should support calls that will make all of us live in peace and harmony. We must all support any progressive forces from within, to check and balance the going ons in government. But we must not create red herrings to pour scorn on the work being done to create National Healing and Reconciliation.

Time is of real essence as we focus on a new constitutional dispensation that will capture the aspirations of the Kenya we all want, not the Kenya that satisfies our egos.

Our focus must be at National Healing and Reconciliation, not at opposing each other.

Bob–

 Make calls now
Barack Obama is just 17 elected delegates away from a majority — and you can help get him there.

At the start of this race, there were 3253 elected delegates at stake in primaries and caucuses across the country. After winning 32 of 49 contests, Barack is within reach of an absolute majority.

We believe that the winner of the majority of elected, pledged delegates should and will be the Democratic nominee.

Important primaries are coming up this Tuesday in Oregon and Kentucky. With your help, Barack could win enough delegates to reach this crucial milestone on his way to securing the nomination.

We need to do absolutely everything we can to help put Barack over the top.

Right now, thousands of people in these states are thinking seriously about what they’re looking for from our next president — and one voice could sway their decision.

I’m asking you to be that voice.

Use our simple online calling tool to call potential supporters in Oregon and Kentucky and make sure they vote for Barack:

http://my.barackobama.com/callnow  http://my.barackobama.com/callnow

We’ve come a long way together in this campaign, and Tuesday could be the day we reach a majority of elected delegates.

Passing this milestone will be an unmistakable signal to the media, the superdelegates, and everyone watching this election all across the country — the people have spoken, and America is ready for change.

Use our online calling tool to build our support in this final push — even if you’ve never done anything like this before. Here’s how it works:
        1. When you log in, you’ll get a list of 25 names that only you will receive. (If you don’t have a My.BarackObama account, creating one is fast and easy.)
        2. Click on a name, make a call, and you’ll be led through a simple script, question by question.

If you want, you can even print your numbers and the script and enter your results back into the system later.

Get started making a difference now:

For more than a year, we’ve relied on everyday supporters like you, reaching out person-to-person to build our movement.

We’re close to the nomination — please keep working to help Barack cross the finish line.

Thank you,
Jon

No To Post-Election Violence Suspects

There should be no release or negotiation for post-election violence suspects. Asking for amnesty for people who held up machete and cut fellow Kenyans to pieces or poisoned arrows and shot their neighbors to death should be abhorred and condemned by any peace loving mwananchi. Any politician calling for amnesty for these heartless murderers should be investigated and made to record statements with police on how they happen to have sympathy for such heartless people.

The same thing goes to people in Mungiki and Sabaot Land Defence Force those who have killed innocent people should be pursued to the end of the earth and made to pay dearly for their crimes. If the government fails to crash these gangs then we will have gangs raping people and the government will be appealed by politician that we need amnesty for they are raping out of frustration or out of historic injustices.

The law is clear if you murder you should be hanged anybody asking for amnesty should be held for aiding and abetting murder.

Grand Opposition

In 1964 before Kenya became a republic, jaramogi persuaded KADU leaders to join KANU for one party unity hoping that “an augmentation of strength would ginger up the party and, most important, would end disunity and tensions among the people so that united energies could be harnessed in the building of the country.

“jaramogi later admitted in his book (Not Yet Uhuru) that he calculated falsely.  What followed was a corrupt authoritarian one party dictatorship.

Jaramogi fought consistently for over a quarter century before multiparty politics was allowed in the country. What was the fate of the well intentioned KANU/NDP cooperation and the MoU? Think carefully before embarking on persuading Kenyans in general and your support base in
particular that the institution of opposition is not necessary today in Kenya. Reflect on the African proverb “a man bitten once by a snake is unlucky: a man bitten twice by the same snake is a fool”.

Do you listen to Queen Babito (Haki Yetu)?

Re: PIN NUMBER REVERSAL (GOOD TO KNOW)

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your Pin # in reverse.

For example if your pin number is 1234 then you would put in 4321. The ATM recognizes that your pin number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to help you.

This information was recently broadcasted on TV and it states that it is seldom used because people don’t know it exists.

Please pass this along to everyone possible

Hi guys,

Am quite a passive contributor in this forum but this surely caught my eyes because a workmate told me the same stuff 2 weeks ago. after investigating will all the banks we have in Kenya, through my useful banking leads,  it is clear that this cannot work in Kenya. Reason being, the special system/equipment that links banks to the police stations etc have not been installed yet by any bank in Kenya. Due to this technological lag, we can not use the pin reversal to alert the police for rescue.

hope this sheds light on the issue

This thing doesn’t work with the Kenyan ATMS not unless there are any that are linked to our police stations which the last time i checked don’t have computers installed and are still working on pieces of paper.

It’s a nice thing but it does not work, i tried it personally on a KCB and Equity ATMS lakini it shows u wrong pin entered.

Perhaps someone in the banking sector can enlighten us more on this

Hi Amos

I am not sure about this technology, but it will be something good to write home if it is available in our bank here in Kenya. But I totally disagree with Amon coz I dont thing there is anyone with pin numbers that have repetitive numbers as this one would break the computer password rules.

Lets move from speculation world and would like to hear from someone working in the backing sector or someone who has developed banking software.

Cheers guys

But I like the whole concept of user and the system ‘playing’ a clueless thug… secondly, other than alert the police (who may not come even if you TALK to them), the system should only dispense limited amt on such a password and even give wrong balance!
