Kenya: Back Bench Boycott of Parliament – a New Low has been Reached

Yesterday will go down in history as they day Kenyan MPs sunk to a new low – lower even than when the 2010 Budget debate ended after 4 hours in July this year. Usually, its members of the Cabinet who are accused of staying away from the Kenyan Parliament, and in the last week the Speaker has said he is minded to start sanctioning such behaviour as gross disorder.

The disorder appears to be spreading from Cabinet to the back benches, because yesterday morning, just as had been threatened in the morning papers, back bench MPs stayed away from the debating chamber en masse because they were angry with the Executive and/or the Independent Boundaries Review Commission (it’s not clear what their gripe was). Net result of the ‘protest’ / ‘strike’ was that every single question listed for the morning session was dropped because the MPs who listed them were AWOL. Who suffers?
