KENYA: HIDDEN CODES FOR TRIBALISM IN NATION

From: Christine Baraza

Now that 2012 is around the corner, politicians will start jostling and positioning themselves for the senate, parliament. governorship and the Presidency and lemmi tell that codes for tribalism will fly all over. Here are some that you will hear all over from some leaders. Such codes have been used before-JUST REVEALING SOME OF THEM.

1.HE CANNOT BE TRUSTED
This is a code that is used by extreme tribalists to send messages to “their” people that they should not vote for certain candidates. How can one not be trusted? by WHOM and What Grounds? and Why? and what did he do not to be trusted by an entire community? Look for this..this is a code word for-He doesn’t speak our language and doesn’t come from here so don’t vote for him. This code has been used by certain people in Kenya a lot-you know them. REJECT anyone selling you this cheap crap and look at the candidates program and policies before you vote.

2.HE IS NOT CIRCUMCISED
This is another code word for tribalism and used to campaign against some candidates. This is a cheap crap that no one in the 21st century should even utter in campaigns. More so is a sign of backwardness and retrogression and any candidate saying this doesn’t deserve your vote. How did he know that someone isn’t circumcised? Did his wife tell him? How did his wife know? Does cutting the skin over the penis has anything to do with leadership in Kenya? Western developed countries have no culture to do with circumcision but their leaders have DONE wonderfully well in developing these countries.

3.MADOADOA
This is another term that is loaded with tribalism and I was surprised that even the well respected Ngugi Wa Thiongo used this term in 2007 to dissuade his people from voting for a certain candidate. This is foolish and backwardness. Kenya has 42 ethnic groups-No one chose where to belong and to call someone madoadoa is utterly stupid and will not help move this country forward. Anyone selling you this cheap bullshit should go to hell. Do not vote for such tribalists this time round.

4.WE FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE
Who cares if you fought for independence? All Kenyans fought for independence and no single group is entitled to the leadership of this country. This country I repeat belongs to 42 ethnic groups and anyone one person from any of the 42 groups can lead this country. The feeling of entitlement to leadership, to work..to education from certain ethnic groups MUST stop and spreading this feeling around election times is tribalism of the worst order. It is sad and backward that some ethnic groups still believe that it is them who must lead Kenya till the end of time. Let them too support others if the believe that this country belongs to all.
