Joyful ululations, car blaring horns and Vuvuzelas rent the air when the death of former Maseno University Vice Chancellor Prof.Fredrick Onyango reached the lakeside town of Kisumu ten kilometres from Maseno University.
Across section of tuk tuk, boda boda and motor cyclists and taxis operators who were celebrating his demise along Jommo Kenyatta Highway then Oginga Odinga Street around 8pm couldn’t believe that Onyango had died saying they had been his targets and bribed the municipality to send them out of business within Kisumu’s Central Business District. Lecturers in most Higher Institrutions within the area were seen toasting beers in bars and other social places saying tthe late had denied them working opportunities while he was heading the institution.
“Its true the giver and taker of life is God,i would not lie that his soul to rest in peace, may he rest in eternal fire in hell”one lecturer said while toasting champagne.
It was all joy as many streamed at Maseno University Hotel when people streamed there as he had said that “idlers and busy bodies were out of bonds at the facility”.
The late’s death might have been contributed to depression as of late he was seen talking alone within the major streets of Kisumu. “He looked miserable, distraught, worn out and really distressed,at times he still forgot that he was the boss at Maseno”one lecturer said.
Even the death of a robber or terrorist is not celebratable. Prof. Onyango could have had his personality problems but that is not reason enough to celebrate his death. His contributions in the academics will forever be there so long as we are under the sun.
His condition just before he died is sad but we should view it as a learning point. He was not the first son of the Lake to have faced such a misery after high life. From the so called ‘celebratuions’, it seems, he is not going to be the last.
Jonam, ter re uru mos. Bolruok ber.
His death is a huge loss to the world and to the Physics fraternity. You were the best in your field and an inspiration to us who are following in your footsteps.
RIP Prof.
This is pathetic to say the least.
This man was an academic who did his best to steer a new University into great hights.
Yes idlers renegate development for all they do is ask for help but never work hard to achieve anything tangible. MIYA or KONYA concept of our community LUO or otherwise must be condemed and defeated.
In any ciyt in the world, central business areas are beautiful and left for business and not littered by such things as matatus or boda boda as in Kisumu. Such should be designated their areas/space well out of town so wananchi can enjoy the beauty of a city.
The professor was right and with due respect, he said and did what he thought was right.
I can write for free and with authority that NO such thing happened in kisumu. Everybody in maseno was saddened by the Prof.’s death. At the time of his death he was the Executive Director of centre for new and renewable energy in maseno as well as abig investor in real estate in kisumu. The Professor never walked the streets of kisumu. That writer is malicious and must know that we will all die at some point
I am surprised that sane people can celebrate the death of a human being, whatever the character. If anything, he contributed immensely to the development of Maseno University and sending boda boda out of business within Kisumu’s Central Business District was for purpose of securing an orderly environment for the learning institution and not a market place. What a shame.
i wonder how selfish human beings can be, no celebration happened in kisumu am a matatu operator who operates until late in the night n i sware i never witnessed such a thing infact people realy mourned the death of the professor to the lecturers celebrating let them know that nobody is immotal even them will go through the same n mark you you cant please everybody in life prof did what he thought was best for the growth of kisumu city n maseno university, there is a say that goes ‘the good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow ‘. do good anyway prof did good n has been forgotten shame on them prof rest in peace.
jomoko jo juogi when they spread such malicious and baseless rumour.
What is wrong with kisumunians?,shame on you.
Am very suddended my his death, he brought Maseno from the debris to where it is today,as a former student of Maseno, i feel ashamed if that what happen in Kisumu,May his soul rest in peace,
Watu wa OODDMM, mme tu let down, Yaani do democracy in you at all, shame on you
This can of journalism must discouraged immediately within our mids. Professor worked very hard to build Maseno University to a high level. Must not allow short sighted individuals to mislead the public by down playing the great contributions in
the a cademic world and public field. It shameful for a normal human being to celebrate the death of a great kenya intellectual as the late professor Onyango.
These handout journalists in kisumu who are slaves of corruption and are ready to
write anything for the sake of money must be removed for morality and integrity
of the profession to be reclaimed.
There are two notorious journalists in kisumu who are feeding media with gutter news. It is a well known fact that these pseudo journalists are in pockets of a group
bent to curb any positive developments in luoland. The other day,one of these pseudo journalists wrote a very bad article about Jakoyo when he revealed the plan of assisination of PM. The very journalist is known to be using many names
which are not real names.
Professor Onyango was a great man who was ready to speak his mind openly at any
time.He believed in honesty and truth.Ok Kano nindi mos. Everybody is going to die
at one time. This man was a great man by all standards. He was against laziness
and that was the reason for idlers in kisumu celebration.
I think this news reporting is trash. The announcement of Prof’s death brought alot of gloom to Maseno and Kisumu population. Kindly before publishing do a major and thorough research to ascertain the truth.
Prof has done alot for Maseno and the accademicians. The vast development we see in Maseno is his personal effort. He hated lithergy, and if you are one you could not work with him. Lets send him off peacefully
Why do Luo behave with so much self ego.senseless and more so victims of mob psychology,Since the rain if Mzee Jomokenyatta, luo are known for lack of tolerance, its high time for you to rejuvenate and come out of barbaric ,akaik
and outdated mannerism,
Who is this Man to lead you out of slavery, not Laila or any of his alias, they are all possed by his spirit and without him they will be incapacitated to politics.
It is till you mature and not anatomically, but mentally that you will see the light,
what luo Nyanza need is development ie, industries, roads ,clean water and more so the mother of all Democracy.
for you to develop, more and more Fredrick Onyango should be born and nature, they include former Rarieda MP Mr.Tuju.
If not Luo are dooms to Odingaism and heading to the perpetual state of poverty for ever and ever.
May Prof Onyango’s soul rest in eternal peace and may almighty God keep and protect the remaining family.
DR ODIDA OKUTHE
I am convinced that such a thing never happened in Kisumu. Let us not perpetuate rumors for our own selfish gains. It is unafrican to mint money using the name of the dead. Be sensitive to friends, admirers, relatives and family of the late Prof. Talk of impunity and it is such reports aimed at negatively painting the otherwise good people of Kisumu bad. Am ashamed.
Such a thing never happened in Kisumu. I am a resident of Kisumu by birth and I can confirmed that no particular group did celebrate. Onyango changed the face of Kisumu and quite a number of people are now employed at the hotel and varsity place because of his wisdom. No man is perfect and anybody who claims that he could have done better than Onyango should go public and carry on from where he left.
This is incorrect reporting, am sorry.
Prof. Onyango was an academic giant and tried to built Maseno from the scratch, a no mean feat. May God rest his soul in eternal peace.
