Gethsemane Garden Christian Centre (the new Starehe of Kenya) Harambee Is August 18, 2012

Members of the Lowland Community, the organizing committee and Gethsemane Garden Christian Center students, staff and family are inviting you to a fundraiser in aid of the center on Saturday, August 18th, 2012 in New Jersey, USA starting at 5p.m. to 12 a.m. @ the American Legion Post 401, 148 Major Road, Monmouth Junction NJ 08852.

Gethsemane Garden Academy and Gethsemane Garden High School for orphans are the new Starehe of Kenya located on Mfangano Island in Suba District.

The center, which was started in 2003 for orphans from Kindergarten to third grade, has expanded to 12th grade or Form 4. It has been largely financially supported by well wishers from U.S. who have visited the school from time to time.

The center wants you to be part of its success as it makes history.

The school started from a humble beginning, a loving vision of supporting a few children who lost both parents to the dreaded HIV by a God chosen couple Mr. Naphtaly Mattah and his wife Nereah Mattah. Like the children of Israelite the number multiplied very fast and God’s miracle worked its way to now 535 students. Gethsemane now prides itself with strong candidates distributed in academic giants such as Alliance Boys and Girls, Starehe, Mangu, Moi Girls Eldoret, Maranda to mention a few. Below is the official website and videos of Gethsemane story:

?AIDS Rights? Fwd: ITPC Re: AIDS Care China Nanning Clinic Closure

From: Kun Chang

From: sarah zaidi
Dear Friends,

AIDS Care China has over the past few months facing closure of their very successful treatment programs for PLHIVs. The Nanning authorities have decided to close the ACC supported clinic creating a gap in services for those PLHIV that it served. The ITPC Global Secretariat condemns this decision by the Nanning health authorities. Their decision has resulted not only in the denial of treatment services for those in need but also has affected AIDS Care China’s work on implementing the WHO/UNAIDS strategy of Treatment 2.0 with a focus on community provided services and support. This is a major setback for community organizations as this community-clinic demonstrated the cost-effectivies of such services.

In solidarity,
Sarah

Closure of clinic raises AIDS care costs
Updated: 2012-06-26 05:12
By Shan Juan (China Daily)

The decision to close the first private clinic to treat AIDS patients on the Chinese mainland will create a gap in affordable HIV/AIDS treatment, critics say.

Health authorities decided to close the clinic in Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, on May 28 after finding that it was not registered to treat AIDS patients.

They also said the decision was a result of their campaign to regulate medical practices and ensure that Nanning has an orderly healthcare industry.

“If a physician lacks expertise and the appropriate buildings and equipment, there will be the risk of cross-infection and a further spreading of the disease,” Ding Wei, deputy director of the health bureau in Nanning, told Xinhua News Agency.

During its 19 months in operation, the nonprofit clinic, mainly funded by AIDS Care China, an NGO that supports AIDS patients and their families, treated more than 100 full-blown AIDS patients who suffered from tuberculosis, bacterial pneumonia, meningitis and other infections. Medical care at the clinic costs less than at large public hospitals.

Thomas Cai, who leads AIDS Care China, acknowledged that the clinic had defects, but said it had helped save the lives of those who could not afford to be treated at public hospitals.

China’s Five-year Action Plan for HIV/AIDS Control (2011-15) calls for qualified and competent NGOs to get involved in the country’s campaign to control and treat AIDS.

Most anti-AIDS NGOs now help health authorities with HIV/AIDS prevention and behavior intervention, said Jing Jun, a professor in Tsinghua University’s social policy institute.

He said health authorities should pay such organizations to provide services needed to supplement the government’s fight against the disease.

The work of civil societies should be integrated into the country’s comprehensive work in AIDS intervention, the action plan said.

The plan also said treatment costs should be lowered to make medical care less expensive for AIDS patients.

Cai said the cost of treating more than 100 patients was about 220,000 yuan ($34,600). Care in large, State-owned hospitals would probably have cost 10 times that amount, he said.

“Closing the clinic is tantamount to denying poor patients affordable and lifesaving treatment,” he said.

On the Chinese mainland, the government has been offering free antiretroviral treatment to AIDS patients since 2003.

Also, the country’s Infectious Disease Prevention and Treatment Law, promulgated in 2004, classifies HIV/AIDS as a Grade B infectious disease, meaning that those who contract it do not have to be quarantined at designated hospitals.

No regulations or laws now prohibit privately owned clinics on the Chinese mainland from treating AIDS patients.

“Patients should at least have the choice of obtaining cheaper treatment at clinics like the one in Nanning,” said an AIDS patient surnamed Zhao. He said he tends to go to large public hospitals if he can afford to pay for treatment.

?AIDS Rights? china Zhejiang scraps mandatory HIV testing for addicts

From: Kun Chang

By Wang Hongyi in Shanghai (China Daily)

East China’s Zhejiang province has scrapped its mandatory HIV testing for drug addicts, a move seen as great progress in protecting privacy.

Under current regulations for HIV/AIDS prevention and control in Zhejiang, law enforcement officers should notify local disease prevention and control departments after arresting drug addicts, and work with them to carry out mandatory HIV tests on drug addicts.

Lu Hanfu, deputy director of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the Zhejiang Provincial People’s Congress, said mandatory HIV testing of drug addicts has no legal basis, which is the reason the commission made the revision.

The move came after the Administrative Coercion Law – which aims to provide a legal basis to guarantee and supervise the administrative bodies’ performance – took effect this year. The law also aims to protect the rights and interests of citizens.

“The country hasn’t actually enacted any special laws or regulations in carrying out mandatory HIV testing on drug addicts,” Lu said.

According to current regulations in China, the State should implement voluntary HIV counseling and testing. Many provinces and cities, however, stipulate mandatory HIV testing for drug addicts.

For example, Jiangsu’s provincial regulation stipulates that the public security bureaus, judicial departments and health departments should carry out HIV tests for arrested prostitutes and drug addicts.

Shaanxi province stipulates that the public security department should notify the local disease prevention and control department when prostitutes and drug addicts are arrested. After receiving the notice, disease prevention and control departments should carry out HIV tests under the assistance of public security departments.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health showed a rapid spread of HIV/AIDS, and the HIV infection rate through drug use dropped to 38.5 percent in 2008 from about 70 percent in 2000.

Drug addicts are classified as a high-risk group for HIV infection, and are also the focus of HIV/AIDS prevention work.

“So far, mandatory HIV testing for drug addicts is a common practice across the country. The removal of the rule can be seen as major progress in protecting the individual privacy of drug addicts,” said Liu Yige, a Beijing lawyer who provides legal consultation in a civil organization.

“Once their personal information is disclosed, it will bring uncountable harm for drug addicts, making it harder for them to return to normal life,” Liu said, noting that other provinces and cities should follow Zhejiang’s example.

But some experts said the abolition of the rule may make it more difficult to prevent and control the spread of HIV among high-risk groups, and they called for new rules.

“From the point of HIV/AIDS prevention and control, new legal measures with higher legal effect should be set up to make up for the absence of HIV/AIDS management,” Chu Chenge, associate professor at Northwest University of Politics and Law, said.

Kenya: The death of an ‘ordinary person’

The death of an ?ordinary person?

========

This is really a very powerful and heart touching story. Dorothy was indeed a very charismatic and courageous Kenyan who fought her illness with resilient compassion. Special thanks goes to Ms. Lucy Hannah for bringing Dorothy’s story to the public fora. There is absolutely NO doubt that Sister Dorthy was failed by the state and left for death. What a sad death. Its painful to read stories such as Dorthy’s where the public health providers don’t bother to provide basic nursing services for their patients. How in the world could nurses be sleeping their nights away as if they are in their bedrooms while on duty? Do we have supervisors in Kenyan hospitals? Dorothy was treated like a dog in her own country yet she probably worked hard all her life, paid taxes and yet Uncle Sam turned his back on her at the time she needed him most. Most poor people like Dorothy are the largest tax contributors to Kenya’s Uncle Sam kitty and when they need the slightest help, all access doors are shut before them. These rich dudes never pay anything towards the tax revenues yet they amass all the benefits they can grab from the state Exchequer’s office. Its high time that the Kenyan government start paying disability allowances to certain classes of people who qualify such as HIV victims, old and frail, disabled etc so that they too may afford tp purchase health care coverage in the private healthcare facilities. If the hospitals are too congested to take care of all the sick people who need long time care, allow people to open nursing homes to care for these category of people and give them social security benefits. A few months ago, there was another devastating story from Kisii-Kenya where by a mother who has a mentally ill child who has since grown into a youngman now, was chained in his village hut all his life for fear that he might either wonder away, hurt someone or kill himself. When he was discovered, the newsmen visited his home where they found him covered with his own defecation waste and urine. I could not fanthom how he managed to live in such pathetic conditions today when his own local village chief was aware of his “wanting” condition. The chief could have raised an alarm in conjunction with his local MP and sough help for this guy. He was chained like a tithered animal awaiting the butcher’s knife all his life! God forbid. This is human abuse in other countries. Open group homes to care for the mentally ill citizens and don’t let poor mothers struggle alone to raise their children helplessly. I know this has been going on for long in Kenya whereby when a family member becomes completely confined in the hospital bed due to critical illness, most of the time it becomes a FT job for family members to nurse their kin while the state paid health care providers do nothing. Why does Uncle Sam extract taxes from our meager resources yet we don’t get our taxes worthy free state provided services? Ms. Hannah says it very clearly than I can, that our dishonorable politicians behave like a cottage or a bunch of Mafia professionals and NOT our human rights defenders. How long are we gonna tolerate this nonsense? We have been shot changed for many years and its just about time for all of us to say, enough is enough in 2012. She hit hard on her last paragraph as quoted here below

“It reminded me that although Dorothy always referred to herself as “an ordinary person”, she was clearly not.

By her own account, she was illiterate and poorly educated, yet she was articulate and wise about subjects that are taboo for so many — rape, HIV, and forgiveness.

It also reminded me that the fate of every — poor — citizen rests in the hands of their government.

Dorothy had been failed at every turn in her life: in the 2007 election; in personal security; as an internally displaced person; as a person living with HIV; in restitution; as a victim of sexual violence; in loss of livelihood; in legal justice and human dignity; and finally, in a fatally corrupt and inefficient institution – the health service.

But in death, she had taught me one last thing. I finally understood exactly what is meant by a “failing State”. Dorothy died of failure of State. Dorothy was buried on Saturday”.

RIP and may God bless your soul sister Dorothy. You have taught us a lot of what it means to be poor person in Kenya

World: HIV prevention cost-effectiveness: A systematic review

From: Yona Maro

The authors note that interstudy and intercountry comparisons are complicated by different baseline scenarios and that the provision of realistic cost-effectiveness results is constrained by limited information on effectiveness and a failure to take into account interaction effects between multiple interventions (e.g., prevention and treatment strategies). They also highlight that the exclusion of cost-effectiveness analysis in studies finding no effect can lead to biased cost-effectiveness estimates. Future research should focus on areas in which evidence is insufficient or unavailable, such as the cost-effectiveness of surveillance, abstinence, school-based education, universal precautions, prevention among HIV-positive individuals, structural interventions and research in particular populations and settings (e.g., vulnerable groups and concentrated epidemics).

KENYA: FIDA WORRIED OVER RISING WIDOW EVICTION CASES IN WESTERN KENYA.

By Dickens Wasonga.

The Federation of women lawyers , FIDA is alarmed by the ever increasing cases of widows evictions by in-laws especially in Nyanza and Western Kenya regions.

Speaking during a one day media forum at a Kisumu hotel , Mary Frances Lukera, a senior program officer, FIDA Kenya said over 150 such cases have been filed by the organization in the local courts in just a period of two months.

The FIDA official said they were worried that despite the successful completion of widow eviction cases in the courts, most of whose judgements favored the widows, the trend was not going down in these two regions.

She said the worst hit areas includes Kisii, Siaya, Vihiga and Kakamega where she alleged Chiefs and their assistants were allegedly colluding with some of the in-laws to deny widows and orphans the right to inherit properties left behind when a husband dies.

FIDA Kisumu office has established that most of the cases were as a result of attempts by the relatives of the deceased persons to have widows forcefully inherited.

Lukera noted that most women who refuse to be inherited as demanded by their in-laws remains with no option but to leave.

” Majority of them move to urban centers with their children and without a job to help them raise their families many turn to prostitution which makes them more vulnerable to contracting HIV/AIDS” she said.

From the past such incidents, the official stated that amongst those who are often likely to be chased away by their in laws are childless widows or those who are from a different ethnic community other than that of their spouses.

Those who have girls only or are jobless at the time of death of their husbands are also prone to widow eviction, a form of violation which they described as the worst nightmare for the widows.

The organization is however conducting awareness creation against the practice and so far several workshops and seminars have been held through- out the two regions.

” We are involving the council of elders in these workshops and during our civic education campaigns targeting to reduce incidences of widow evictions and other forms of violation of women rights in Nyanza and Western Kenya.” said Lukera.

She clarified that apart from using the courts to settle family disputes , FIDA has also been instrumental in mediation processes where there is a problem adding the organization is not only about seeking divorce as perceived by most men in the country.

The one day seminar which brought together several Kisumu based journalists from both the electronic and print media was meant to discuss how to report gender based violence objectively and was organized by FIDA Kenya.

Kenya: Conman on the loose in Rongo, Migori, Nyatike and Uriri targeting CDF and politicians

Reports Leo Odera Omolo In Migori Town.

A smartly dressed and sweet talking conman masquerading as building contractor is said to be on the rampage causing havoc with the life of unsuspecting politicians, government officials and local CDF committees.

The man who is said to be in thirties is sad to be have perfected in the arts of conman ship is always bragging of having connection in higher authority and within the corridor of power.

His tricks and thieving escapades have on earned him jail terms twice. He said to have several cases related to conning escapades pending before the courts at Rongo, Kisii and Migori.

The well bred and well educated conman is also said to be fond of writing malicious letters the people in higher positions within the government making generalized and unfounded allegations and accusations against junior officers working in the field. After authoring such malicious letters to the higher authorities, he turn to the junior officers issuing threats and intimidation telling the victims how he is capable of causing them a lot of suffering.

He is reported to have swindled a number of local CDF committee huge sums running into million. He is said to be using the names of big people to secure contract under the pretext that he was a registered contractor.

After irregularly securing such tenders using the names of senior men in position, the man turns up and engages the same crude and crafty method of arms twisting the local CDF committee with the demand for advance payment even before setting his foot on the project’s site.

Once he had secured the advance payments of some money, which our source says usually reported to be involving quite substantial amount of money, the man vanished in the thin air without touching anything in the targeted project.

The conman is said to be on the loose. A member of Parliament from Southern Nyanza region recently suffered from the conman is silent. The conman is said to have approached Mheshimiwa with the documents purporting that he had worn a tender worth millions of shillings from local CDF, and request the MP to lend him some money so that he could buy some materials and place the same on the site before he could attract the first batch of payment from the CDF kitty.

The conned MP obliged and borrowed for him some substantial amount of money running into the excess of Khs 300,000. The man disappeared and it later emerged that he had not won any CDF tender. The MP made a frantic effort and later traced him. He cornered the conman who readily agreed that he would refund the MPO’s money by way of depositing cash on the legislator’s bank account.

He did so on two or three occasion and then melted in the thin air. But he had retained the pay-in bank slips in which he deposited the money to the MP’s bank account. He later turned up and claimed that it was he who had lent the MP a hand of financial assistance and later displayed the pay-ins bank slips to several people and attempted to blackmail the MP who is now very jittery about the whole exercise.

After spending a couple of months in jail, the conman’s wife who is a non-Luo is reported to have deserted him and went back to her parents place in Eastern Province. The man is now operating as widow’s inheritor. He is being credited of being so immune from HIV/Aids because some of the women he is now cohabiting with in Migori town re said to have lost their husbands through the scourge of HIV/Aids.

Reports reaching us from Migori said the man was recently conneed by the brother-in-laws of a of a beautiful young woman a widow who he had eloped with from the rural village and was now cohabiting in a rented house in Migori town who gave the conman proper beating.

The man is also credited for being a master forgery. He was jailed for three months by a court in Mombasa who found him guilty on a charge of forging a project’s cheque.

The rude and arrogant conman is said to be a frequent visitor to police headquarters, office of the President and other offices manned by people in high places, and after such visits he come back to Migori County armed with good reasons to intimidate junior officers working in the field.

Previously he was so much feared by members of the police and provincial administration authorities in the entire Migori County, but after he was arrested and arraigned in court, he has since lost his immunity and is said to be on the run with he police sleuths hot pursuit on his heels. He is no longer untouchable, and plans are said to be a foot to have him account for all the money he has received from the various CDF projects in the region.

CFD officials, MP, civic leaders, the police and members of the provincial administration have been wane that this conman is on the loose and he is capable of causing havoc with the lives of others.

AFRICA: THE DEPOPULATION AGENDA

Sent by Mbugua Ngugi

By Jon Rappoport
www.stratiawire.com 19 Feb. 2003

From a round-up of my best intell sources, and from my own 15 years of research…the subject is depopulation.

A third of Africa to go under in the first long phase, which is underway now… AIDS and other diseases will be the COVER STORY for the decimation. The real causes will be starvation, contaminated water (which has existed for a long time), toxic vaccines given to people who are already immune-suppressed, wars, and of course, stolen farmland.

Many reports of rural villages disappearing…this will be laid at the doorstep of AIDS. It already is. This is a cover story. This is a lie. HIV, as detailed in my past stories (keyword search my archive), causes nothing. It is basically a dormant retrovirus, like many others of its class. Its “amazingly intricate” activity in the body is a made-up piece of non-science.

The day after my 1988 book, AIDS INC., hit the shelves, a copy was on its way out of California to Moscow in a diplomatic pouch. It was sent by an agent of the USSR who was operating under diplomatic cover here.

This fact was relayed to me by one of my major sources for the book. He said, “Won’t they be surprised when they actually read it.”

What he meant was, the Russians at the time were fronting the theory, developed by East German biologist, Jakob Segal, that HIV was a lethal germ engineered in Maryland. A biowar US creation.

My book instead proved that HIV—wherever it came from—was a harmless retrovirus that was being used as a cover story to explain/conceal an emerging depopulation operation in the Third World. HIV was also a cover for other agendas outside the Third World.

As long as AIDS is the target of WHO/UN “humanitarian” efforts, the actual causes—which are easily reversible—of death in Africa, Asia, and Latin America are allowed to remain and fester and expand.

Thabo Mbeki, the president of South Africa, has been a major thorn in the side of the depopulationists. He knows that HIV does not cause human disease.. He knows that the front-line drugs for AIDS, especially AZT, attack the bone marrow, where certain cells of the immune system are manufactured. Thus CREAT ING what is called AIDS through pharmaceutical means. In particular, giving AZT to pregnant mothers is a major goal of the depopulation effort.

Mbeki understands that the causes of death in the Third World I have mentioned above are killing Africa. However, he continues to ask for outside help to alleviate these ravages. There is no chance he will get this help. ZERO.

Mbeki is being contained, to a degree, in his attempts to form a real coalition of leaders all over the African continent. MONEY is the weapon being used against him. Payoffs, “aid” dollars, and so on.

Robert Gallo and Luc Montagnier and other retrovirologists were languishing at the end of the 1970s at the National Cancer Institute and the Pasteur Institute, respectively. They had just finished their work on the doomed Viral Cancer Project, which was a failed attempt to show that cancer was caused by one or more viruses—in particular, a newly discovered class of germs called retroviruses. These scientists had cut their teeth on these so mewhat exotic but unimportant germs. That was what they knew. They were fishing around for a new disease that could bring them government dollars.

They were SET UP to become the new tigers who would get major research money to explore an emerging phenomenon called AIDS.

HIV was, in their hands, destined to become the COVER STORY for death that actually was occurring for MULTIPLE REASONS.

So Montagnier and Gallo did “discover” HIV and the rest is history—false history.

I apprised the East German biologist Jakob Segal, via mail, that his theory about HIV was way off base. In the sense that it was not causing human disease. If it was indeed a biowar creation, it was a failure.

Either my letter was intercepted, or he ignored it because he had his own agenda. He had answered a previous letter of mine which had asked direct questions about his work—but when I blew the whistle, he fell silent.

Meanwhile, I had interested author and environmentalist Jeremy Rifkin in HIV.. For a time—before I discovered the truth—I was exploring the possibility that HIV had been put together from bovine and sheep viruses—and Rifkin was very hot on the bovine factor—because there was a chance that HIV or some bovine germ close to it was in smallpox vaccine. If so, it potentially implicated the vaccine in millions of deaths in the Third World.

But then I dug deeper. I found out that NOTHING strange or exotic needed to be in the vaccine. All by itself it could kill people. Particularly those whose immune systems were suppressed already. And then I examined very closely the medical evidence that had been advanced by Gallo and others to prove that HIV was the cause of what was being called AIDS. I realized, in 1987, that this evidence was non-existent.

I pointed out these two discoveries to Rifkin. He was not pleased. I think he felt a little betrayed, because I had been feeding him much different information before I saw the deeper truth. And Rifkin was basically pointing himself toward a theory that irresponsible medical germ machination itself was implicated in AIDS. He felt that tinkering with germs in labs was where the real action was. I told him the Plot was more insidious than that, and HIV was really a cover story for the depopulation agenda. He soon abandoned his AIDS project.

During this period (1987-88), I met a member of the secret service of one of the African nations “most afflicted with AIDS.” This man was basically loyal to his people, and he felt that a gigantic hoax was being perpetrated. At some risk to himself, he spoke to me about various doctors who had come to his family and told them that AIDS research was being done in order to prove that so-called Slim Disease—at that time the African label for AIDS—was the result of HIV. These doctors were amazed that such obviously false research was being accepted. In particular, they cited Lancet, the famous British medical journal, as the publisher of some of this research.

I then did my own examination of a key paper by Serwadda which attempted to establish Slim as a new and emerging phenomenon on the African continent. The paper was so full of unsupported statements, so rife with omissions, that I concluded Slim was basically a diversionary label for: starvation, dirty water, stolen land, and immunosuppressive vaccines.

At bottom, why all this false science? Because someone needed a cover story to conceal a persistent and intentionally unsolved situation in Africa that was causing death according to a plan to depopulate the continent.

A PLAN: DEPOPULATION.

A COVER STORY TO CONCEAL THE PLAN: HIV.

MEDICAL DUPES TO PROVIDE THE COVER STORY: GALLO, MONTAGNIER, SERWADDA, AND OTHERS.

AN INTERNATIONAL HEALTH AGENCY THAT WOULD DO EVERYTHING EXCEPT HELP SOLVE THE REAL AND CONTINUING CAUSES OF DEATH IN AFRICA: THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION..

A DIVERSIONARY AND PHONY DEBATE THAT ACTUALLY FORWARDS THE DEPOPULATION AGENDA: WHETHER TO LOWER PRICES ON TOXIC AND DESTRUCTIVE AIDS DRUGS FOR AFRICA.

Kenya: charge against distortions around HIV/Aids

From: Okiya Omtatah Okoiti

Joe,

At one time Prof. Wangari Maathai was leading Africa’s charge against the propaganda & distortions around HIV/Aids, arguing without blinking an eyelid that those who manufactured/propagated the virus must be held accountable for the genocide… then she won the Nobel Price for Peace, bowed to the West, and changed overnight and turned round to embrace the monkey business…

See: http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200410/s1216687.htm

Nobel peace laureate claims HIV deliberately created

Kenyan ecologist Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, today reiterated her claim that the AIDS virus was a deliberately created biological agent.

“Some say that AIDS came from the monkeys, and I doubt that because we have been living with monkeys (since) time immemorial, others say it was a curse from God, but I say it cannot be that.

“Us black people are dying more than any other people in this planet,” Ms Maathai told a press conference in Nairobi a day after winning the prize for her work in human rights and reversing deforestation across Africa.

“It’s true that there are some people who create agents to wipe out other people. If there were no such people, we could have not have invaded Iraq,” she said.

“We invaded Iraq because we believed that Saddam Hussein had made, or was in the process of creating agents of biological warfare,” said Ms Maathai.

“In fact it (the HIV virus) is created by a scientist for biological warfare,” she added.

“Why has there been so much secrecy about AIDS? When you ask where did the virus come from, it raises a lot of flags. That makes me suspicious,” Ms Maathai said.

Africa accounts for 25 million out of the estimated 38 million across the world infected with HIV, and the vast majority of infected Africans are women, according to UNAIDS estimates.

The United States on Friday congratulated Ms Maathai on winning the Nobel Peace Prize, but tempered its praise over her claims about AIDS.

“She said (HIV/AIDS) was invented as a bio-weapon in some laboratory in the West,” a senior State Department official said.

“We don’t agree with that.”

The official pointed to a report of those comments published in August in Kenya’s daily Standard newspaper, in which Ms Maathai was quoted as saying that HIV/AIDS was created by scientists for the purpose of mass extermination.

We have this from Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wangari_Maathai

Controversy

Controversy arose after the announcement of the Nobel award when it was reported by The Standard that Maathai had claimed HIV/AIDS was “deliberately created by Western scientists to decimate the African population.”[60] Maathai denied making the allegations, but The Standard has stood by its reports.[60]

In a 2004 interview with Time Magazine, in response to questions concerning that report, Maathai replied, “I have no idea who created AIDS and whether it is a biological agent or not. But I do know things like that don’t come from the moon. I have always thought that it is important to tell people the truth, but I guess there is some truth that must not be too exposed,” and when asked what she meant, she continued, “I’m referring to AIDS. I am sure people know where it came from. And I’m quite sure it did not come from the monkeys.”[61]

In response she issued the following statement: “I have warned people against false beliefs and misinformation such as attributing this disease to a curse from God or believing that sleeping with a virgin cures the infection. These prevalent beliefs in my region have led to an upsurge in rape and violence against children. It is within this context, also complicated by the cultural and religious perspective, that I often speak. I have therefore been shocked by the ongoing debate generated by what I am purported to have said. It is therefore critical for me to state that I neither say nor believe that the virus was developed by white people or white powers in order to destroy the African people. Such views are wicked and destructive.[62]

China AIDS: China’s brutal repression

From: WanYanhai

By Kate Krauss

Just before the Beijing Olympics in 2008, a group of young Chinese activists was evacuated to the United States for safety reasons. Chinese officials were harassing and detaining people they thought might embarrass them during the Olympics. Three of the activists flew to Philadelphia that summer and slept on mattresses on my dining room floor.

Ironically, they brought Olympic souvenir chopsticks as gifts. “We’re not against the Olympics; they are a great thing for China,” one of them said very seriously. “We’re against the oppression by the government.”

One of my guests in particular was especially excited about visiting America. Chang Kun, an AIDS activist and online organizer, was thrilled to see Philadelphia, try American food, meet American girls and exchange ideas with other activists.

Chang has a giant online following. He writes with exclamation points and pure outrage. His visit to the United States made a deep impression; he was moved by what he described as an atmosphere of freedom, tolerance and cultural exchange. When he returned home to Anhui province in eastern China, he established the AIBO Youth Center, a small community organization with a free library and free Internet access, a place where young people could learn about the wider world.

Recently, during a conference at the youth center, in front of scores of activists, thugs broke into the room where Chang was speaking, knocked him from the podium and beat him severely. Police did nothing to stop the assault, which left him hospitalized. He is slowly recovering.

I wish I could say I was surprised. But after working with Chinese activists for nine years, I recognize the government’s treatment of Chang Kun as routine. In fact, China deploys human rights abuses on a massive scale — beatings, torture and imprisonment of activists and critics, broad censorship of the news, and the increasingly effective blocking of independent channels of communication. These are not mistakes or areas for improvement; they are the fundamentals of the government’s power. Negotiating for small concessions on rights cannot change this equation.

In 2009 and 2010, in response to an uprising by Muslims facing harsh discrimination, the government cut off Internet access to the vast Xinjiang region for 10 months. Now it is slowly strangling the Internet for everyone in China, blocking access to Web sites it can’t control and intensifying online surveillance.

The human cost of this repression is steep. In recent months, Chinese security forces have detained scores of activists, reportedly tortured to death three Falun Gong members, publicly arrested the architect-activist Ai Weiwei (who, ironically, designed the Olympic Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing), detained hundreds of Christian worshippers (while they prayed) and even broke up their Easter Sunday service.

The State Department, which is holding an annual human rights dialogue with China this week, recently released a report that describes “black jails” throughout China where activists, their families and others who oppose the government are punished. Many detainees are beaten and tortured.

Chinese leaders have been in power so long that we may forget that no one elected them. Their regime is no more legitimate than those of Libya or Yemen. If elections were held tomorrow, the leaders might all be swept away. But there are no elections on the horizon. For decades, the U.S. government has aided the regime by supporting China’s economic aspirations, including permanent normalized trade relations, which have allowed it to reap huge profits — enriching the Central Committee and the unelected elite.

Many observers believe that China is becoming an economic powerhouse that has no intention of becoming a democracy. In 20 years, China may be emboldened even further to violently repress its own people.

Given this record, at what point do we stop seeing China as a flawed but dynamic nation on the road to democracy and start seeing the Chinese government as a violent, destabilizing, and autocratic regime on the order of, say, Iran?

Where do we, the American people, draw the line?

We have to stop deluding ourselves. China is governed by a violently repressive regime. And the United States, through its economic policies, is helping it stay that way.

The writer is executive director of the AIDS Policy Project and has organized campaigns for the release of detained health rights activists in China.

Sadistic Reminder of PEV By Janet Feldman

from Judy Miriga

Folks,

This is a serious matter involving International public taxpayer money and Janet MUST be investigated by FBI and Interpol Police.

The truth must be known, as these matters are of public information and interest affecting public life and taxpayers.

I wonder, could this be where the Minister Esther Mutugi could have borrowed the idea that HIV/AIDs should be put into a concentration camp or do they have something in common with HIV/AIDs fund case scenario?…….

There are possibilities that HIV/AIDs fund has been gravely misused or misappropriated, and more or so, it was used for unsuspecting activities or short-changed. We therefore demand facts of the matter, check and balances, accountability and transparency.

I am therefore asking the Head of HIV/AIDs Mission, Presidents and Directors to through some light here, for the world to know …… all about the hidden mission behind the purpose and aims of HIV/AIDs Fund to Kenya and Africa and whether the Funds are meeting its obligations, or are as accounted for, go to the people and mission intended for or not…….and who are the masterminders behind under-cover deals ?……..

Thank you all,

Janet Feldman’s decision to ignore pleas by various Kenyans at home and abroad to release the results of the KAC Election – now suppressed for the fifth day running – is a contemptous disregard for the wananchi of this country and the traumatic feelings they are still recovering in the aftermath of PEV. This arrogant white woman has no respect for the intervention of the New Generation Leaders like Otieno Sungu whose courteous appeal to her to let him verify the election results she trashed dismissively.

As far as Janet is concerned, the opinions of Kenyans on their own organisation count for nothing; only her arrogant views matter. And she damn well does what she wants with KAC, and the hell with what Kenyans say about it.

She is a sadist bent on reminding us the botched December, 2007 elections. She doesnt care a damn about the stress we underwent over stolen and rigged elections. KAC is hers and hers alone to decide what to do with. Who are we to demand a say in the affairs of the KAC when that is hers alone to decide ?

We have been a free Kenyan Nation since 1963. We are not about to surrender our sovereignty to the White Martinet Lady of Rhode Island. You must show some respect when Otieno Sungu and others like him when they ask you the results.

As for your so-called AIDS programmes by KAIPPG in western Kenya, rest assured I will thoroughly investigate the veracity of your claims. Already, I am suspicious.

You claim on a turn-over of USD 110,000 KAIPPG is running an AIDS programme for 1,000,000 in 24 Western Kenya with a staff of only two – you in Rhode Island and James Onyango in Mumias ? How can Onyango single-handedly administer a programme for 1,000,000 ? How can a programme for 1,000,000 be run on a budget of USD 110,000 only ?

sbj; WHY JANET FELDMAN CANNOT ANNOUNCE THE OFFICIAL KCA ELECTION RESULTS!/Otieno

Janet,

I would hate to respond to you in a different forum than KCA but I’m forced to do so because you are misleading the members of this forum from understanding the current quagmire in KCA.

As the outgoing president of KCA whose Executive team was dissolved through a “coup de tat” by a special interest group of 12 members using clandestine means, I am forced to respond and shed some light.

As soon as the “gang of 12” hijacked KCA from my executive using unorthodox and lame excuses, you took upon yourself to moderate some members including myself who differed with the “Gang of 12” members. If truth be told, KCA has been limited to a participation of 12 active members who engineered my dismissal because as the president, I refused to allow KCA to partner with a financial group that includes these 12 individuals.

My argument was that KCA is a non-profit registered organization and should NOT be involved in any financial venture schemes. I was overuled by the “gang of 12” who took upon themselves to dissolve my executive and conduct sham elections that were undemocratic.

The motive behind the “gang of 12” is financial gains from the newly formed Kenya Diapsora Investment Funds. Majority of KCA members who were displeased by the actions of the “gang of 12” are no longer active participants on the KCA forum and that’s why its only less than 2 dozen members participated in this elections. This group is not a representative sample of KCA or the diaspora, and as such, these elections should NOT be honored or recognised since they were not conducted in a democratic manner.

The “gang of 12” who appointed themselves interim executive members nominated each other as candidates for the executive seats while moderating the forum from “outside” interferance.
Janet, any house built on dubious foundation can never last.

And BTW, I am not interested in current or future KCA executive position.

From: Henry Gichaba

Dear Kenyans,

Janet Feldman fears that if she announces that Abdul Yakub won the KCA elections, she will not be able to use Kenya’s name and KCA to raise funds.

As I informed you earlier, the un-announced winner of the KCA elections is Abdulsalam Yakub of New York. I also explained the reasons why Ms. Janet Feldman can’t announce the KCA results. It’s because she has far-reaching financial interests in Kenya. Through the rubber-stamp of KCA and the use of Kenya’s name, she is able to enrich her resume and get more money which she claims to use in helping Kenyans suffering from HIV/AIDS and other ailments.

When I pointed out this unfortunate development, Janet Feldman said she would “take other measures.” I must that Kenya’s name has been used wrongly by an American called Janet Feldman to collect funds whose use isn’t clearly explained as required by Federal Law. Both Feldman and Brodsky have registered non-profit organizations 501 3 (c) in the USA purporting to raise funds for work in Kenya but only feasible on paper.

One, according to US Federal Law, one must be account for the use of untaxed funds raised through legally registered non-profit organizations. Look at Janet’s Feldman’s fundraising for use in Kenya in 2008-2009.

http://www.kaippg.org/involved.html “Please contact Janet Feldman at kaippg@earthlink.net or James Onyango at kaippg@africaonline.co.ke if you would like to volunteer your time, or expertise, or to donate funds or other items. Many Top of the list is that we need program and core-funding to enable us meet our budgetary requirements. Our budget for 2008-2009 is US $200,000.”

I’ve taken the pain to find out the existence of the projects on Janet’s site but I’ve not been successful. First, in the Motor Vehicle Department, no vehicles are registered in the name of Janet’s KAIPPG.

Right on the ground in Kenya, I’ve interviewed people and there’s hardly any support for AIDS/HIP victims assisted by Janet Feldman’s organization. Janet, please give us the breakdown of people who benefitted from your 2008-2009 budget.

Janet has previously threatened me with “other measures will be taken” kind of stuff. Now I want Janet to come out clean on how she uses the money she raises helping needy people in Kenya.

I hope you have filed your taxes for that period and that the items you entered in every column are true to the best of your knowledge. Second, I suspect failed accountability in actual use of these funds according to US federal requirements. Based on the reports from the ground, Janet Feldman has not funded AIDS-related projects in Kenya in the magnitude of her 2008-2009 budget.

Now read for yourselves: http://www.kaippg.org/involved.html

Richard Brodsky is foxier than his countrywoman from Boston. It’s hard to nail Richard in terms of specifics. This New Yorker’s sin is that he uses KCA (see KCA membership and voting rights) to advertize his interests. However, his books with the feds seem to be well kept (at least on paper). However, we will also follow through to ascertain the exact nature of activities where he uses public funds. When the courts and the feds subpoena his use of funds which he collects – like use of credit cards billed to his organization – this man, I’ve been advised is a fox.

On the other hand, James Onyango shouldn’t allow his name to be used by Janet without actual work going on in Kenya. On the same note, KCA shouldn’t be used as a tool to collect funds whose use is not verifiable on the ground.

Source: http://www.richardmbrodsky.org/aboutfoundation.html

“The mission of the Foundation is to provide food, shelter and shoes for orphans living in Kenya, raise money for research for the cure or vaccine for AIDS, to help those already afflicted with AIDS, and to help those with brain cancer.” This man, at least, travels to Kenya to buy some dinner in Kisumu.

I am asking Janet Feldman: 1) leave KCA to Kenyans 2) stop using Kenya’s name to raise funds 3) stop threatening me and Chifu that “other measures will be taken” whener we ask legitimate questions. I am going to demand that the Federal Government explain to me why Janet Feldman should use Kenya’s name to raise funds whose destination is not well-accounted for.

Janet, do not forget that laws here in the USA do work. You may remain in the KCA, but I want to let you know I’ve a right to petition the Federal Government to account for why Kenya’s name is used to raise funds which you don’t fully account for.

KENYA: HIV DRUG TRIAL FAILS IN KENYA AND THREE OTHER AFRICAN NATIONS

By Dickens Wasonga.

A large HIV prevention study involving over 3000 women in Kenya and three other African other has suffered a huge set back after it was ordered stopped by an independent body which review trial data to ensure that participants are not being adversely affected by a daily dose of the study pill.

The revelation that has surprised the scientists involved in the trials was taken by the Independent Data Monitoring Committee which directed the researchers to bring to an early closure, the clinical trials of Truvada, an ARV which was under investigation to see whether it could be given to prevent HIV infections on HIV negative women who are at higher risk of getting virus.

scientists showing journalists around the clinical trial site offices in Bondo

According to the scientists, the trials had to end prematurely after preliminary review indicated the study pill was unlikely to prevent HIV infections amongst women as earlier expected even though huge amounts of money could have gone to waste.

The Female pre-exposure prophylaxis study whose preparation began in 2007 in Bondo district, the only study site in Kenya was scheduled to end in June next year and was designed to study whether HIV negative women of between the ages of 18 to 35 and at the higher risk of infection by the virus could safely use a daily dose of the pill called Truvada to prevent infection.

The study was underway in two other African countries namely Tanzania and South Africa. In Harare Zimbabwe, a site was to be established in collaboration with the University of Zimbabwe and it was scheduled to begin FEM-PrEP trials in mid 2011 but the site could not be initiated due to the premature closure and no participant was enrolled.

But the trials were on going in Bondo and Rarieda of Nyanza province where screening for the would be eligible participants started in 2009. A total of 1495 women in the targeted group were screened and 739 of them were enrolled into the clinical trial that had initially given hope to the researchers involved.

Out of the number that was screened 992 failed the tests and were excluded from the study. By the end of last month, 331 women enrolled had been in the study taking the trial pills for one year.

The study whose fate now appears to hang in the balance at least until the committee that monitors similar trials all over the world gives its verdict was being implemented by the Family Health Internationla in partnership with the Impact Research and Development Organization and other research centers in Africa and had intended to enroll 3900 women in all the study sites in the four African nations when completed..

It was being funded by the United States Agency for International Development [USAID], with early funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and if it proceeded to its logical conclusion , the Kenyan site alone would have gobbled an estimated 4 million US dollars.

So what went wrong?

Dr. Kawango Agot, the director of Impact-RDO and FEM-PrEP site investigator for the Bondo study area said this preliminary result from the study does not eliminate Truvada as a potential HIV prevention method for women.” what we can say is that, at this time, it cannot be determined whether this drug works to prevent HIV infection in women in the FEM-PrEP trial.Other ongoing HIV prevention studies may be able to shed further light on the effectiveness of Truvada among women” she said.

HIV scientists in Kenya and other countries were surprised and disappointed by the interim results, especially because another recent study called iPrEx, found that the same drug, Truvada, could prevent HIV infections among men who have sex men at risk of the virus.

According to the Kenyan team, the reason for the surprising findings among women in the FEM-PrEP study is not clear at this time. They believe it could be the women who were on the study were not taking the study pill consistently very day and that the drug works differently in men and women.

The scientists have not yet finished analyzing all the FEM-PrEP data and they are currently investigating a number of possibilities. But Dr. Agot said the study will now be closed over the next few months as study participants complete their final study visits to the Bondo clinic. She said the preliminary results have already been shared with most of the participants ,the local communities are also being informed at this i moment . ”Once the final results are known, they will be shared with everyone” She added.

Is it possible then that the participants may have failed to adhere to the drug?

According to the researchers, socio behavioral information plays an important complementary role in HIV prevention clinical trials. The behavior of the participants , such as their regular attendance at the scheduled clinic visits and their adherence to the study pill is fundamental to success of clinical trials.

As part of FEM-PrEP, the study team said they developed and monitored procedures for reaching women who were at higher risk , implemented strategies to promote adherence to the study pill, examined aspects of clinical trial that were difficult for participants to understand and promoted community engagement in research. Data were also gathered on adherence to the study pill and on participants sexual behaviors while taking the study pill.

So who did not do what and why ?

Documents relating to the study confirms that during trial implementation , the study teams monitored and provided on going feedback about recruitment strategies, comprehension of the informed consent process, and counseling to improve adherence to the study pill, risk reduction and contraceptive counseling , as well as community education and outreach.

Data was also gathered to understand general issues of adherence and sexual behavior in the context of the clinical trial and they systematically engaged community stakeholders in the research process.

The claim therefore that participants failure to adhere to the drug stand very slim chances of raising a debate amongst observers. This is because in their own findings, 90 per cent of the participants in all the study sites in the participating countries made a come back for the follow up visits every month and were retained in the trials.

As at the 18th of February this year, preliminary findings indicated that 95 per cent of the study participants had adhere to the study product. 5 per cent of new HIV infections were noticed on participants although the scientists at the Bondo site had expected 4 per cent and 56 new infections occurred in all the sites.

The primary goal of the study in addition to assessing the effectiveness of Truvada in preventing HIV infection in women is to evaluate its safety when used daily by women who are not infected with the virus.

It is licensed as an HIV treatment by the drug regulatory agencies in a number of countries , including Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the United States. It has shown to be safe if taken by HIV positive people for the treatment of HIV.

Because the drug had not been assessed as a drug to prevent HIV, a primary goal of PrEP clinical trial is to evaluate its safety amongst its HIV negative people. The iPrEx clinical trial, which released its results in November 2010, found no substantial safety concerns when Truvada was taken by men who have sex with men to prevent HIV.

But following a scheduled interim review of the FEM-PrEP study data, the Independent Data monitoring Committee advised that the study will be highly unlikely to be able to demonstrate the drug’s effectiveness in preventing the HIV in the study population even if it continued to its originally planned conclusion.

And with that verdict of the committee the entire team in the trials were thrown into abrupt halt of the project that has gobbled millions of shillings from the sponsoring organizations.
