What I saw last night

The first time I ever heard Barack speak was at a community meeting on the South Side of Chicago.

He won me over with the same message that inspired millions last night.

He told people who’d been knocked down that, despite everything, we need to set our sights on a better place around the bend — and that it’s up to each one of us to fight for it.

That’s where you come in.

More than two million supporters already own a piece of this extraordinary campaign. Will you join them by making your first donation right now?

Make a donation of $5 or more today:

Now that the convention is over, time will fly between now and Election Day.

And the next two days are especially important.

The August fundraising deadline is this Sunday at midnight, and we can prove that a campaign funded by grassroots supporters can compete with John McCain and the Republicans.

The past four days in Denver — and the amazing event last night — showed the country that Americans are ready for change.

Now it’s up to each of us to make it happen.

Thanks for everything you’re doing,

Michelle

Fidel Odinga: Walking in his father’s political struggles
Published on 29/08/2008
By Martin Mutua

He bears the burden of history, as embodied in his name that’s drawn from another continent, era and meaning.

Fidel Castro Odinga, 33, the first-born son of Prime Minister Raila and Ida Odinga understood his destiny early in life.

He is a politician’s child bearing a political name immortalising former Cuban President, and grew up in political turbulence in Kenya.

“I can tell you it was a scaring experience … when my mother was thrown out of a Kenya High School house where she was working as a teacher, purely on political reasons.”

Fidel Castro Odinga. The first-born son of Prime Minister Raila and Ida Odinga. That was the 1980s and Kenya was in a restive mood. Raila was in detention, having earned the ire of the authorities as coup plotter. Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Fidel’s grandfather, had been placed under house arrest.

Raila’s long spells in prison meant Fidel did not see much of his father. His friends say the experience hardened him.

Yet others believe Fidel’s close association with his mother turned him into “mama’s boy.”

But towering at six feet tall, Fidel says even though he was young then, he still remembers every single detail of what they went through.

“My mum is an Iron Lady because she kept us united but most of all we got our strength from prayers and close relatives,” he recalls.

Fidel says Jaramogi, whom he was very fond of, played a big role in their lives by visiting them regularly and encouraging the young family.

So, how has his life changed since his father became Prime Minister?

Shrinking private space

Fidel says people recognise him in the streets, which means his private space is shrinking, curtailing his movement.

“I don’t frequent the places I used to go to and my movements are not the same. I am under scrutiny round the clock as well,” he added.

However, Fidel says the family gets together during weekends when their father is in Nairobi.

Fidel, who studied business management and marketing at South Eastern University in Washington, USA, supplies bitumen products to contractors, while managing the family business —East African Spectre Limited.

Fidel says he has no political ambitions at the moment but does not rule out taking the plunge in the future.

Unlike his sister Rosemary, who was visibly active during the presidential campaigns in the last elections, Fidel was not in the limelight.

“I was there mobilising the youth and I also accompanied my father wherever he went during the campaigns,” he says, adding that he is not as outspoken as his sister and mother.

Fidel insists his father was robbed of victory as he won “straight and squarely.”

He describes his father as “brutally honest.”

“My father is brutally honest in what he does and is also trusting. But if when dealing with you he realises you are lying to him, he gets extremely upset.”

Fidel is engaged to Veronica and friends say his “circle of friends has also changed, if not upgraded” to include more mature company.

Right after the speech

After we walked off the field at Mile High, Barack and I had some official business to attend to — signing the papers to add our names to the ballots.

At that moment, the general election officially began.

Since you’ve been at the core of this campaign every step of the way, we thought you should be there too.

Watch this short behind-the-scenes video and make your first donation to the general election now:

https://donate.barackobama.com/general1

This new phase of the campaign will move quickly. By the time you read this, we may even know who John McCain has chosen to be the next Dick Cheney.

No matter who it is, it won’t change the fact that John McCain simply isn’t prepared to bring the change we need.

But far more important than McCain’s choice is the choice of whether we tackle the general election with the fierce urgency that the stakes demand.

And that choice is yours.

Please make a donation of $5 or more today:

RE: VISION 2030 for KENYA – Big Joke!

Dear Countrymen,

It is most interesting to see this big hype about VISION 2030 – realizing the industrialization and economic dream for Kenya.

We are seeing politicians blow lots of hot air about the Vision and Ministries throwing big parties and seminars to convince all and sundry that come 2030 – Kenya will be there.

How on earth are we going to do this without involving the core engine of the process – Education and Teachers to be specific.

Dreams are great – but they come with a lot of hard work, dedication and focus.

Each homestead was to have tap water by year 2000. That was 8 years ago. How is your village doing on this one?

That hype about Vision 2030 is not a bad idea (Kimunya’s brainchild), gives us something to dream about but based on experience – it is just words. This is Kenya and we have been down that road more than once.

You made it happen

This night could not have happened 40 years ago — or even 4 years ago.

And it could not have happened without you.

You believed, against the odds, that change was possible.  I felt your passion here tonight, and I know it was shared by millions of Americans who are building this movement all across the country.

Tonight is your night.  But tonight is just the beginning.

The general election is going to be faster and tougher than anything we’ve faced so far. And our opponents will do everything they can to tear us down.

I need your support more than ever.

Thank you for everything you’ve done,

Front row

When Barack takes the stage tonight, he’ll look out at delegates from every
corner of the country and tens of thousands of ordinary people who are here
to be part of this historic moment.

But in the very first row he’ll see a group of people who are there because
they took ownership of the political process. Some gave just five dollars.

They’re folks just like you, and they represent more than two million Americans
who own a piece of this campaign.  Our success would not have been possible
without so many people answering the call by giving whatever they can afford.

On this final day before Barack formally accepts the Democratic nomination,
please celebrate the moment and lay the foundation for our victory in November

Barack is ready. The crowd filling this stadium at this very moment is ready.
And America is ready for the change we need.

It’s within your grasp to make that happen.

Thank you,

Kenya to become a Looters\’ Paradise

Over the past week, there has been a renewed Government proposal, seemingly in response to public comments by ex-PS John Githongo, to grant conditional amnesties for corruption as a means of dealing with the past.  Githongo’s proposal seems to be based on one of the elements of the Usawa Programme an election manifesto proposal of the Orange Democratic Movement – Mr. Githongo is associated with authorship of Usawa’s anti-corruption aspects.

It is our contention that this proposal is:

A COUNTRY OR A GRAVY TRAIN?

From:   Mugo Muchiri
            Los Angeles
            August 24, 2008

What shocks me most about matters of governance in Kenya is the sheer magnitude of waste in government spending.  And I don’t believe I’m alone.

The latest example of this, albeit still at the intent level, is the recent announcement by Head of the Civil Service Francis Muthaura that the wives of Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka and Prime Minister Raila Odinga will each be paid a Shs. 400,000 monthly allowance.  Evidently, Kenya needs their services to bolster its image abroad and at home.

To be sure both Mrs. Pauline Musyoka and Mrs. Ida Odinga are important role models for the nation.  Theirs is an important voice that can be used to further accelerate the healing process of a nation recently ruptured by violence of a magnitude unseen by most Kenyans.

But both are very gainfully employed, the former at the Central Bank of Kenya.  Mama Ida on the other hand manages and directs one of the largest companies in Nairobi’s Industrial Area.   Even if they weren’t, their families are extremely well taken care of by this government.  Therefore, Kenyans need to unequivocally reject Muthaura’s plan.

There should be a hierarchy of priorities arrived at through a relatively simple means test when it comes to government spending.  Are there more pressing national needs where funds to the tune of KShs 10million a year (in this case) can be put use to?  We all know the answer to that.  Evidently not Muthaura.  When it comes to ‘elite’ spending, his spigot doesn’t seem to have an ‘off’ button.

Recall the quiet Shs300,000 bump to the salaries of the forty or so PSs that he recently shepherded? The annual cost to the Exchequer of that adjustment alone:  Shs 144million give or take.  People, if there was a slogan that said it all, it’s the ‘HOOK-ME-UP’, stupid!

But don’t think for one moment that Muthaura has this market cornered.  After all, wasn’t it just several weeks ago that Metropolitan Development Minister Mutula Kilonzo treated us to that increasingly not so rare delight?  Have given much thought to the dire problem of traffic congestion in the city and its environs, what did Kilonzo and his team come up with?  Let’s build an extra lane for the exclusive use of the President, Vice President and Prime Minister.  I could imagine Kenyans literally flying off of their seats upon reading this!

What a brilliant idea!  In fact my only problem with the Minister is that he doesn’t go far enough in helping us realize just how special this trio is.  Why, Kilonzo needs to approach the World Bank to secure funding of a state-of-the-art sewage facility that would do exclusive processing of presidential, veep and right honorable poop.

And to anyone that has the guts to criticize Kilonzo, this Mutula damu has only one message for them: CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING THE SOUR GRAPES AWARD.  NOW GO SUCK A LEMON!!! UTA DO? HAVEN’T YOU REALIZED THAT KENYA INAWENYEWE!!!

Seriously, HOW OUT OF TOUCH (oot) CAN THESE PEOPLE BE?  Do these folks remember that 60% of Nairobi residents live in the slums if a recent statistic is to be believed.  When did that oft-repeated ‘less-than-a-dollar-a-day’ phrase cease to gnaw at their conscience?

But then again, let’s face it: If you were a lawyer that got paid legal fees the size of Burundi’s GDP during the Moi regime, then perhaps being forgiven for occasional OOT symptom flare-ups might be in order.

Well folks, it goes from good to absolutely delectable.  The Veep’s residence will soon be ready for occupancy.  Cost?  A whooping half billion Kenya shillings!  Well we know one guy who’ll soon be internally displaced!  Move to new digs, rent out the old mascan, plus pocket another Sh0.4million per month from the honey.  I’ll take that kind of internally displaced anytime!  Now what was that slogan again, Bwana Mugo?

Makes your mind go back to the NARC days when some of the high and mighty were intent on building a new State House.  One half billion shillings was the number being bandied around then.  When pressed about NARC frugality, which Cabinet Minister was it that came with the rather tart rejoinder: “Really we need it; the President can’t even meet with his Cabinet without being interrupted by pets!”?

One could go on and on.  Cabinet travel: How much did the government spend when PM Raila Odinga was in Washington DC with five or so ministers in tow about 1.5 months ago?  Deputy PM Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to Geneva for the DOHA trade round of talks, how much did that run?

Would you be surprised to learn that a single foreign trip by a Cabinet Minister (say one week) could easily cost taxpayers upwards of Shs. 1million?  Airfare, hotel accommodation, travel and meal allowances, hardship allowances, the list goes on and on.  Yet the operative question is how many countries have these folks NOT visited lately.

These issues are important because they speak to matters of governance and the solemness with which taxpayer funds are utilized.  Kenyans can begin to understand why ours is such a highly taxed nation which itself feeds into the question of competitiveness of business and industry.  A high tax regimen makes it difficult for Kenyan businesses to effectively compete regionally.

Civil society needs to awaken to this most vital of responsibilities – applying pressure to curb wasteful government spending.  So does the Diaspora.  What about Parliament?  Don’t even go there!

A country is judged by how it treats its least fortunate citizens.  FDI, tourism and all good things naturally flow to a nation whose government is fiscally responsible and cares for the security and wellbeing of its citizenry.

Rates of return, expatriation of profits, tax holidays are important but secondary considerations.  May the government of Kenya rise to its historic calling and be truly concerned about the welfare of its citizenry.  This is the way to truly refurbish and burnish our national image, not by entertaining the ‘hook-me-up’ mentality.

Lakini if we fail in this task, then we might as well join Muthaura, Mutula & Co.  How about ministerial massage and manicure allowances, white hair disappearance allowance, even pet psychological counseling allowance?  Then again, maybe we should just arrange for these bottomless-pit spenders to go hunting with Dick Cheney.

TO OUR DEAR MAMAS: IDA na PAULINE

We love and cherish you for the lifelong support you have given your spouses.  Both of you were profusely thanked by your respective husbands during the election campaigns.  Were it not for your love and support, they said, neither of them would not have traveled this far in their leadership quest.  You made the journey easier for them.

We know you both love Kenya very much.  After all, it is the country that allowed your loved ones to ascend to the highest echelons of society.

In the case of Ida, we recall with compassion those lonely years at Kenya High; the constant harassment you and your family were subjected to; the loneliness of having to make life’s journey without the presence and support of your beloved; but more than anything  the great fortitude of character and personal strength in soldering on and in being your family’s primary nurturer.

Indeed were it not for the great strength of the woman in you, I doubt that Kenyans would have been treated to the true delight of seeing your very own son Fidel gaze so lovingly into the eyes of his ravishingly beautiful wife, not to mention the conveyance of the subtextual message that when the Almighty blesses you with the love of another human being, all differences including those of tribe just melt away.  LOVE IS THE GREATEST UNITER.

We thank you for your sacrifice, Paulina and Ida.  Being dutiful mothers and wise counselors, we are sure that you are most sensitive to the plight of the vast majority of Kenyans who MAY NEVER EARN IN A LIFETIME WHAT THEY ARE PROPOSING TO PAY YOU IN JUST ONE MONTH.

WE URGE YOU TO GENTLY BUT FIRMLY DECLINE THIS MONEY.  TELL MUTHAURA (AND THE NATION THROUGH HIM) THAT THIS MONEY CAN BE PUT TO GREATER USE ELSEHOW.

Charity Ngilu says women should be embraced at all leadership levels.  That they are better custodians of humanity; that they possess an innate ability to cultivate and nurture what is good for a family and a nation; that most of all they do not countenance waste, excess or negligence.

PLEASE DO THE RIGHT THING FOR US ALL.  The nation watches………….with bated breadth.

CONCLUSION

And so, from the son of Ndunge, aka the Ker of Southern CA, it’s kwaheri ya kuonana.  As you all know, the Ker wears a golden ring with 2 bands on his finger, the one band having been retrieved from the summit of Mt. Kenya while the other from the deepest point in Lake Victoria.

Due to overwhelming demand, Ker ring-kissing sessions will resume shortly in LA.  Adherence to the following points will get you closer to the front of the anticipated long lines:

you have taught your children how to properly eat ugali and sukuma wiki (the food with the least carbon footprint in the world) by making ‘othunje’
you’ve succeeded in limiting your morning showers to less than 4minutes (hey, we gotta thump the Australians just like Michael Phelps did in Beijing!)
you treat your spouse and collegues with gentleness and understanding and are never as uncompromising and stubborn as an irate Kisii, Meru or mSomali nor as cunning as a feisty Kiambu woman; after all, who gains when you throw your spouse or buddy into the arms of Cobalt’s RP10?
you use body odor deodorant that’s both paraben and aluminum free
you’ve managed to shave off 1 inch from kitambi in the last one month
you believe that Sungu Sungu needs a little Mungu Mungu

TAKE CARE,
NDUGU NA DADA.

LET US BUILD A WONDERFUL KENYA WITH BUT ONE SET OF LAWS THAT CARES FOR ITS CITIZENS

Rolling up our sleeves

Obama for America

Hello:

Weekend of Action Events
This has been a convention of extraordinary moments. Ted Kennedy passing the torch to a new generation. Michelle Obama moving the crowd to tears. And tonight, Joe Biden will give the biggest speech of his life.

Millions of Americans are watching and counting on us to win this election and deliver real change.

They’re not just counting on Barack and Joe — they are counting on you. Hillary couldn’t have said it better: “None of us can afford to sit on the sidelines.”

This is our one shot, so let’s roll up our sleeves — or risk another four or eight years of the same disastrous Bush-McCain policies.

Sign up right now for events happening this week in your community.

Tomorrow, Barack will accept the Democratic nomination, and supporters all across the country are getting together to be a part of this historic moment.

Then, this weekend, we’ll kick off the biggest voter registration and mobilization drive in the history of politics.

Attend a Convention Watch Party this Thursday evening, and find a Weekend of Action event near you:

http://my.barackobama.com/WOAevents

If this convention has shown us anything, it’s how much energy and enthusiasm is out there — and how much passion for change.

Voters in all 50 states are realizing what’s at stake. And they’re hearing Barack’s message of change in every corner of the country.

Let’s seize this incredible opportunity and work together to get out the vote like never before.

Attend a Convention Watch Party and sign up for a Weekend of Action event near you.

Supporters like you have brought us this far, but there’s still a lot work to be done.

At this crucial time in our campaign, it’s never been more important to get involved.

Re: Along the way!

There is no doubt that life has taken each one of us through so many different stages! Along the way,

1.We have lived with some people involving family members.
2.We have met and made friends.
3.We have gone to school with so many people.
4.We have attended the same church with some
5.We have worked with some in the same organization/facility/company

There was a time, when some of the people we have rubbed shoulders with were very close. We ate together, shared joy and frustration and considered some as great buddies!

At different stages,we were forced to drop and pick more friends.
At other times,we found ourselves forced to let go some friends and or relatives. Some of the parting has been but very bitter.

What, if anything, caused the lift which finally brought the relationship to a halt! It includes but not limited to some of the following:

1.Due to jealousy by some over the perceived success of their friend/relative.
2.Due to gossip.
3.Due to looking down upon others.
4.Due to arrogance.
5.Due to sudden change of attitude from positive to very negative.

While family members, fellow church members and friends have and will always change and treat us differently, there is one, who alone has always and will forever remain steadfast in His relationship-the man from Galilee-Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

In the process of dropping and picking new friends, let us be careful lest we get mixed up and drop Him as well.

Yes, I will sure remain committed to my relationship with Him. How about you my dear friend!

Just a thought!

Did you see Michelle?

Obama for America

Hello:

I am so lucky to be married to the woman who delivered that speech last night.

Michelle was electrifying, inspiring, and absolutely magnificent. I get a lot of credit for the speech I gave at the 2004 convention — but I think she may have me beat.

You have to see it to believe it.

And make sure to forward this email to your friends and family — they’ll want to see it, too.

Watch Michelle's Speech

You really don’t want to miss this.

And I’m not just saying that because she’s my wife — I truly believe it was the best speech of the campaign so far.

Behind the scenes in Denver

Obama for America

Hello:

My mom, the girls, and I left home in Chicago and got to Denver yesterday. What a beautiful city!

The convention started this morning, and everyone here is getting ready for the big week.

All the work you’ve done is at the heart of what’s happening here, and our team filmed a short video to give you a look behind the scenes at the convention center.

Take a minute to check out the video and share it with your friends:

This week, folks from across the country will get to know Barack and our family a little better. Tonight I’m giving a speech at the convention, and I’m planning to share a few stories about the Barack I know — the husband, the father, and the man who shares my dreams for our girls, for this country, and for our future.

Before my speech, we’re also going to show a video introducing our family to families across the country. Make sure to turn on your TV at 10:30 p.m. EDT (8:30 p.m. MDT) to see it, or you can watch it at www.BarackObama.com.

This is such an important moment, and I hope you’ll join me by tuning into the convention tonight and all week long.

Thanks,

Michelle

THE ROLE OF ARTS IN MEDICAL SCIENCE

Can the medical health practitioner, that is, a qualified medical doctor be considered as a medical science artiste? This question is moot, because, like any other human being, the medic is also in imbued with certain, or specific artistic attributes. But then, he cannot take medicine to artistic stage, a role belonging to the actor (artiste) gifted with the knowledge and capacity to expound, highlight, propagate and sensitize the general public and related institutions on the attributes of medical science, and the egalitarian role of doctors in enhancing ethics, professionalism and better health practices and offer services for all.

There has been a level of awareness between doctors, as providers of panacea for better health for all, and the beneficiaries who are the wider general public. This cannot be possible without some information and communication link. The artiste as a tool to fill this gap – the missing link.

Medical science is not a cut and dry affair. It is solid, it is real, it is tangible and has to be felt and experienced. It is not academic but is in constant state of flux. It has to create change even as it changes with day to day social and environmental consequences, not to forget physical and cultural constraints. Here again the artist comes in as a vital missing link. One doctor alone, no matter how committed and knowledgeable, he/she may be, cannot solve the ever evolving health problems of the society – in the varied fields of reproductive health, mental health, germs, vector borne diseases, bacteria, viruses, infants and maternal mortality and morbidity and prophylactics, compounded puerperal fever an incidences of nosocomial infections in a hospital. And last but not least, let us not forget that abortions, rape, accidents, battery and assaults during domestic violence are also, squarely a doctor’s concern.

In this respect, the formation of the “KISUMU MUNICIPAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT BOARD” has come at the right time when the important city of the Lake Region is beset with many health problems – unabating, incidents of HIV/AIDS, MALARIA, TIPHOID, CHOLERA, TUBERCHLOSIS and also MULTI-DRUGS RESISTANCE T.B. Unchecked pollutions of the Lake Victoria, the largest fresh water body in Africa, added to the water hyacinth menace, heavy metals, rotting of dead fish and algal blooms daily pose more challenges to the medical sector, which admittedly, is also faced with financial constraints and stuff shortage. Let us the people of Kisumu city say kudos to Doctor Rosemary Obara, the Medical Officer of Health (Kisumu Municipal Council) for the brain child.

There are key issues – problems – that needs to be addressed and redressed. But left obscure, there will be nothing to diagnose, nothing to lighten the symptoms, the damage, the cure and ultimately, the management and sustainability of preventive measures in place.

Here again, the issue of linkage crops up. The undisputed role of the power of spoken words and body language – the stage actors tool –to sensitize, to mobilize, educate and motivate the stakeholders to grasp the import of “BETTER HEALTH CARE FOR ALL” encompasses a vision and mission that defies those subtle sneers of masked cynics.

The art not only creates awareness but do also influence attitude and behavior change in society where it is often conceived that doctors only chip in when matters are out of hand. The arts afford the doctor with breathing space by opening a freer, more airy visita for broader penetration and spread of HEALTH FACILITIES FOR ALL. The artiste is the doctor’s mirror.

The linkage between the doctors and their daily practice and the arts (Narratives, poetry, Music, Dance and Drama and spoken word) goes without question. This inculcate the sense of obligation, responsibility, habit creation and effect attitude change to foster a better society and a healthy, prosperous people.

Art has, since time immemorial, been related to the sustainability of society in its various manifestations. Health promotion, access to it and its practice are all vital components of any working society and is a vehicle that allows for the formation of the basic foundation of a healthy community. Conventional health promotion techniques like teaching have proved to be didactic with very little participation or behavior change integrated individuals or community. Artistry is very interesting, pleasurable, memorable, vivid and easy to understand vehicle for the presentation of healthy information.

Doctors are very busy people. They have no time for duplicating role. And that little auxiliary prope by the creative artist is like live giving shot in the arm. The artist grandly fill the gap, because the artiste has the tool, the methodology and the influence of audio visual communication, in a relaxed, conducive atmosphere to reach far and wide and comfortably drift with the cloud.

THE KISUMU MUNICIPAL HEALTH MANAGEMENT BOARD, is an important entity that is obligated to create change in our community health delivery services and to add value to every body’s life. This is a daunting task where poverty orients, where ignorance lurks and constraints of social capital and fiscal shortfalls daily boggle the mind.

We have to be partners in health progress, complementing each others’ remarkable performances and achievements. The doctors and the artists need to reciprocally acknowledge each other, to appreciate each other at work for the betterment of our society. The doctors are limited often, in both space and time. Here, the ARTISTE can best assist the doctor to ease the pressure in all OUTREACH ACTIVITIES.

Please sign on to support right of protest at International AIDS Conferences!

Hi all,

Please sign on as organizations to this letter to the International AIDS Society demanding that the Mexican sex worker activist group Brigada Callejera not be sanctioned for their protest directed at Mexico City’s mayor at the closing session. They received an email saying they may be barred for life from entering the conference, and possibly even denied scholarships and the ability to present — all their abstracts would be denied. It seems they are being targeted because they didn’t agree to the terms of their protest with IAS beforehand, which could mean that our movement is facing a bleak future of being forced to choose between more and more narrowly defined “acceptable” and possibly impotent protest vs. making ourselves truly heard and facing the consequences. So we should stand with Brigada now.

As you can see below (the letter is below and attached), we have mostly US groups signed on now. We’re hoping to reach more organizations internationally to sign on before we send the letter. Please ask me or Sam Sitrin (pepperbeet@yahoo.com) if you have any questions, and please forward this to groups that might be interested.
Suzy Subways and Sam Sitrin
Philadelphia, USA

Here is the letter:

We, as groups and individuals representing the international HIV/AIDS activist community, are outraged at the possibility of sanctions targeting a local Mexican activist group by the International AIDS Society following the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City. We ask the IAS to correct what could become an embarrassing and painful mistake. The IAS must not sanction Brigada Callejera, a group of sex workers, people living with HIV, transgender people and their allies based in Mexico City.

Historically, the power of people living with HIV and their allies to organize for their rights has transformed the IAC, helping it become a forum for people living with HIV to participate in the decision-making about how AIDS will be fought around the world. For conference organizers, now, to chastise Brigada Callejera for using the same tactics that international groups such as ACT UP have used throughout the years is hypocritical and unjust.

At the IAC closing session, which included a speech by Marcelo Ebrard Casaubon, the mayor of Mexico City, local group Brigada Callejera protested to make visible a local reality that we may not have seen otherwise. They were calling attention to their mayor’s “zero tolerance” policy against sex work which has resulted in mass arrests of sex workers and health educators who give out condoms in the streets, as well as forced HIV testing of sex workers. Brigada also highlighted the discrimination against sex workers by the Condesa Clinic, Mexico’s first HIV/AIDS clinic, and demanded better treatment access.

Does the International AIDS Society support the right of people living with HIV and allies to speak up for our specific needs? If the answer is yes, there must be no sanctions against Brigada Callejera.

Sincerely,

The International AIDS Society (IAS) has at no time considered
sanctions against Brigada Callejera or any other group that
demonstrated or protested at the XVII International AIDS Conference
(AIDS 2008) in Mexico City. Working through the AIDS 2008 Community
Activist Liaison, the IAS met with representatives of Brigada
Callejera prior to the conference, supported their full access to the
conference, helped to ensure their protest at the Opening Session did
not lead to eviction by the local authorities, supported their
demonstrations in Centro Banamex and took no measures to interfere
with their protest at the Closing Session. As such, we regret Brigada
Callejera$B!G(Bs decision to issue a statement condemning the IAS without
first having confirmed whether there is any truth to the claim of an
IAS sanction. In fact, this claim is completely without merit.

The IAS remains committed to supporting activism and the expression of
differing points of view at the International AIDS Conference today
and in the future.

Re: Press Release – The Misleading Call for Circumcision!

My friend Peter,

You stated that, ” You cannot argue convincingly and using statistics that so many circumcised men did not contract HIV/AIDS compared with so many uncircumcised men who got infected and make a conclusion about the transmission of HIV?AIDS” That is exactly the argument used by a study done at Makerere University in Uganda where Nelson Sewankambo, Dean of Medicine concluded that  “Among the 187 seronegative men who had HIV positive partners none of the 50 who were circumcised became infected compared to 40 of 137 who were not circumcised” This study was about viral load as a predictor of HIV transmission but somehow it drew conclusion on circumcision. The study was published in new England Journal of Medicine, 2000, 342: 921-929.

My argument was, “Statistics show that more cut Kenyans carry the HIV virus than the uncut. The math is very simple, 1.5 million Kenyans have the virus and HIV prevalence is only 10% in Nyanza province as per WHO”. It is simply a laymen interpretation that does not rquire any knowledge of HIV transmission. All I was tring to say if that if you add up HIV prevelance in other provinces where circumcision is practised you will find a larger number than that in Nyanza province. In addition to the fact that a large number of Nyanzians are already cut, its easy to conclude that more cut are infected than uncut. We have the data to calculate this number and I will attempt it later.

The World Health Organization recommended circumcision after holding a consultative meeting of in March 2007 in Switzerland. They cited strong evidence from three randomized controlled trials undertaken in Kisumu, Kenya, Rakai District, Uganda both funded by the US National Institutes of Health. I do not know if this is the same study done at Makerere.  It will be interesting to hear from people in Kisumu or anywhere else in Kenya who know something about this study.

Like politicians in Kenya always state that, “Money has been poured to finish me”, we always use the same kind of argument when we feel our culture is threatened. That is where culture always gets into scientific discussion and I would add scientific study as one of the pressures used to change culture.

Judy Nyakwar Ragem,

You have spoken well, except that mostly we are expressing personal opinion which is very relative. Kihero oludhbor mapod kong’ad, moloyo moseng’ad, mano ber. Onge aganja mapenjo ni oludhbor mane emamit moloyo; mon’gad kose? Kendo onge oganda ma ibochun ni otit oludhbor choke! Kaka indiko ni, dipoka imiyo wachak dugo mach yawa, instead focusing on making a decision whether to circumcise or not.

Let those who see the possible risk, or those who want to err on the safe side circumcise, particularly the children, Jakom osewacho!

Again, this debate is not about who is good at sex or who is a complete man or true Luo. It is about what needs to be done to reduce HIV. any means necessary is welcome. Waol gi safarwa ma dala mar iko jo thurwa ni wach Ayaki. Migosi Odongo Mayaka wacho maber ni “Sianda neko,” nikech mit miwachono, hasa ka oludhbor ngima, ketho parwa kendo waduaro sweko mang’eny, maketo wa at more risk.
