President Obama? A Luo? – The Curse Of The Bambino Is No More.

People Of The World,

No politician I voted for, or supported dearly has ever won an election. Ratibu Hussein Ali lost to Nathan Kahara, Achieng Oneko lost to Mwangi Mathai, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga lost to Moi, Raila Odinga lost to Moi, Gore lost to Bush, Kerry lost to Bush and Raila lost to Kibaki. I equated this lack of winning in my voting history to the Curse of the Bambino. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curse_of_the_Bambino

So in early October, I asked you to advice me how to vote in the recently concluded elections, in an attempt to reverse this losing syndrome. 99.9% of you insisted that I give Obama my vote lest he loses by one vote. One person advised me to follow my gut feeling even if it was not consistent with what my 10th great grandfather, Ragem was suggesting.

I reasoned that in the US of A, they do not have chiefs, provincial commissioners, administration police, and the culture of ‘kula huko, kura hapa.’ I also reasoned that in the US of A the president does not appoint election commissioners, rather the election is conducted by civilians, and the votes are not tallied at KICC. I concluded that the probability of Obama losing contrary to all polls indicating otherwise, would only be as an act of a bambino-like curse. Now didn’t your grandma tell you how to reverse a curse? Mine did.

Faced with the dilemma – to vote for Obama and he loses based on my record, I asked my ancestors to give me a sign. A vision flashed right before my eyes and I saw Raila asking his tribe to circumcise. I also saw Raila Odinga changing his tune and saying that those responsible for the election violence would face the law. You need to understand that I was awe struck. How could Raila turn against the very people who fought and even died so he could be where he is today? Then I realized what he was doing. He was doing something different, and this was not congruent to Obama’s message of change. Another vision pointed to Mandela forgiving his captors and MLK asking his people not to be violent faced with abject discrimination. They all did something different, and this again was consistent with Obama’s message for change. In fact, in his story about the Pie Restaurant owner who admitted that his business was not doing well, he quipped, “If you keep hitting your head on the wall, it will begin to hurt, and at some point you will need to stop and do something different!” Can’t you see, my 10th great grandfather Ragem, asking me also to do something different, something drastic. Ssssh it is something I would not want my descendants to know I did.

Like a lunatic, I run to the polling station and cast my vote forthwith for Senator John McCain, so Obama could win. Sure enough, the bambino-like curse is no more, and yes a Luo (another bambino-like curse was that a Luo could not be a leader of a nation) is going to be president of a nation which is the leader the free world, yet I say it not.

Please do not let anyone wake us up from MLK’s dream, which until recently we had no idea had us embedded and intertwined.

KCA CONGRATULATES OBAMA

Washington, D.C. 20091, USA

KCA STATEMENT: NOV 5TH, 2008

KENYANS ABROAD CONGRATULATE SENATOR BARACK OBAMA, 44th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:

The Kenyan Community Abroad (KCA), a Washington DC-based non-profit organization of Kenyans living in the USA and other locations both within and outside of Kenya, congratulates Senator Barack Obama on his historic election to the office of President of the United States of America.

We also extend our congratulations to the Vice President-Elect, Senator Joe Biden, to Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, and indeed to the citizens of United States of America at this great moment in the history of your country and the world.

American citizens have made it known in decisive and unambiguous terms that they have faith in President-Elect Obama to be their leader at a very challenging time for the country and the world.

Owing to Obama’s Kenyan roots, Kenyans at home and in the Diaspora have particularly enjoyed the attention our country has generated globally. KCA sees this spotlight as an important opportunity and challenge for Kenyans to demonstrate to ourselves and the rest of the world that, like the Americans, we will overcome the divisions and challenges that almost destroyed our country earlier in the year, and embrace each other as one people.

We note with admiration the way elections are carried out in United States, including the electoral system, the campaigns, the candidates, the manner in which issues are addressed, and how American citizens have conducted themselves throughout the process. This is especially instructive for Kenyans, given the post-election violence and socio-political discord that gripped our own country during late 2007 and early 2008.

KCA members, and indeed all Kenyans abroad, find great lessons in this election that we can borrow to give hope to our country again, just like Barack Obama and the American people have brought hope back to America, and indeed to the world.

Congratulations again to President-Elect Obama and to all American citizens! You have taken us to the mountaintop, and we have all seen a brighter day on the other side. Now we know that, together, we can make dreams come true…yes, we can!

Midnight deadline

This week, we saw the stark differences between Barack Obama and John McCain on the economy.

With Wall Street in crisis and families struggling, Barack offered a solid plan to strengthen the middle class, including tax cuts for nearly all Americans.  John McCain continued the same old politics — lying about Barack’s plan and offering more of the same George Bush policies, including more tax breaks for Big Oil and no solutions for working families.

It’s time for that kind of politics to change.  And thanks to supporters like you, our movement has grown by more than 50,000 new donors this week.  Now we’re within reach of a new goal — 100,000 new donors by midnight tonight.

With just 45 days left before the election, your support will affect crucial decisions about infrastructure in key battleground states.  A donation now could have a big impact on voter registration and Get Out The Vote operations — so please don’t wait if you’re planning to give.

And if you make your first online donation today, your gift will go twice as far. A previous donor has promised to match every dollar you donate.

A matched donation of $5 becomes $10, a donation of $25 becomes $50, and a donation of $50 will become $100.

Show your support before midnight tonight and double your impact:

National News
Govt shortchanged us, 5 Kisii MPs say
Updated on: Monday, September 08, 2008
Story by: Dan Nyakundi
……

Five MPs from Kisii community yesterday have accused the Grand Coalition Government of ignoring the community even after voting for ODM and PNU flag bearers in the last year’s elections. The MPS, among them Cabinet minister Prof Sam Ongeri, said in the next general election, the community would not support presidential candidates who ditch it after attaining the top posts.

ODM treasurer Omingo Magara, Dr James Gesami, Dr Robert Monda and Walter Nyambati said the community was politically short charged by both parties for failing to get their rightful portion of Government posts. Magara, Gesami and Monda who spoke in Kisii town before leaving for Naivasha after receiving Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Martha Karua who had taken her presidential campaign to Gusiiland for the first time.

Ongeri, the Education minister, told Karua during a meeting at Nyankongo Primary School in Kitutu Chache constituency they could not support leaders from other communities who in the past had used the community as a ladder of climbing to presidency.

Kisii mayor Samuel Nyangeso said the community could field a presidential candidate in the next elections with Prof Sam Ongeri as the torch bearer.

Karua said she would not be cowed to drop her ambition to succeed President Kibaki in 2012. She dismissed those claiming she had launched early campaigns, saying she doe not a bell. Karua said in the past regime, presidential candidates were forced on voters.

She said the time to declare her candidature was now and challenged those opposed to her bid to tell her when the right time to seek the top seat was. Karua was speaking in Kisii yesterday during a home coming party for the mayor where she was the chief guest. She asked Kenyans to work together as a nation to overcome future post-election crisis.

Re: Settling disputes!

That Solomon was the wisest man that ever lived would be demonstrated in part by the way he handled a case involving two women who fought for a living child (1 Kings 3:16-27.)

Do help us understand what a challenge it was for Solomon, think about the following scenarios!

1.Parents are daily called upon to settle disputes between their children.
2.Teachers are called upon daily to settle disputes between students.
3.You and I are called upon from time to time to settle misunderstanding between friends.
4.Pastors are called upon from time to time to help settle misunderstanding between parents/children, member/member, or spouses.

Whenever any of the above takes place, one will of course take time, listen to the complaints, and advise as you understand issues!

If you talk to any of those who have been involved in any case, they will tell you about the same thing!

1.This has always been a no win case!
2.Each of those involved claims to be innocent!
3.Your conclusion will make one happy and the other one very angry!
4.In the end, you will no doubt loose friends!

And so the big question is “In view of the fact that you will no doubt make one of the concerned annoyed,is it not fair to avoid listening to any case at all?”

In a way, that seems to be about the only wise conclusion! However, should you find it absolutely necessary to listen and help, give your honest opinion and leave the rest to God!

Do you see my point?

Just a thought!

Re: The Removal of Ms. Jacinta Mwatela From CBK is a slap on the face

Opinion
Elevation of CBK’s Mwatela far from show of gratitude

By JAINDI KISERO
Posted Tuesday, September 9 2008 at 19:36

MRS JACINTA MWATELA, who was replaced on Tuesday as deputy governor of the Central Bank of Kenya, is an extraordinary banker and public officer. Her story and record of service at the CBK offers an illuminating study on what personal commitment to probity by a public official can bring to public office.

Observers who have been keenly following the shenanigans at the Central Bank of Kenya know very well that her replacement and promotion to the position of permanent secretary for the Ministry of Northern Kenya and Arid Lands was not inspired by a sense of gratitude to the 30 years of exemplary service she has given to the CBK.

The truth of the matter is that somebody wanted her out of the way at the central bank in a hurry. It is an open secret that she was not in good books with the clique that wields power at both the Central Bank of Kenya and the Treasury.

Outspoken and uncompromising on issues to do with procedure and probity, she found herself on the wrong side with powermen over the manner in which the multi-million second generation currency printing contract was handled.

Last month, she rubbed the powermen the wrong way by the evidence she gave to the Chris Okemo-led parliamentary committee on finance and public administration that was investigating the Grand Regency saga.

Within the Central Bank itself, it was an open secret that she was among a group the insiders at the bank would derisively refer to with the code name, “The Three Musketeers”. Mwatela was perceived as the inspiration to a group of three tough women in the top management of the bank, who refused to play to the whims of politicians and influence-peddlers at the Central Bank of Kenya and the Treasury on matters of procedure and probity.

With her exit, the three musketeers have more or less been dismantled.

The manner in which Mrs Mwatela was replaced raises several broader policy questions. Can we— really — claim to have an independent central bank?

Why does the Government pretend to subscribe to the principal of central bank independence, but in reality treat the affairs of this critical regulator of the financial system as if it were another ordinary parastatal?

If we indeed believed in an independent central bank, the Government should have left the recruitment of the second in command of this key institution to its board.

The issue of Central Bank independence is as old as central banking itself. We need to renew our faith in this principle so that we can keep politicians and the Government away from the Central Bank as far as possible.

IT IS FOOLHARDY TO ENTRUST THE power of issuing paper money to the Government. Goldenberg happened basically because we had a central bank that was willing to cede power to ministers and permanent secretaries at the Treasury.

Why are were driving in the reverse in terms of the need to achieve independence and autonomy of the Central Bank of Kenya?

Last year, the Treasury tried to introduce changes to the Central Bank Act with the aim of introducing a chairman appointed by politicians.

Treasury’s argument at that time was that the current arrangement, which allows the governor to hold the positions of both chief executive and chairman of the board was not in line with modern corporate governance practice. Clearly, the intention was to get the Central Bank to cede space to politicians.

Fortunately, that move did not see the light of day. What Kenya needs is a central bank whose commitment to price stability cannot be influenced by either short-term considerations of politicians or the borrowing appetite of those big spenders at the Treasury.

Inflation is the cruelest form of taxation on the people. Yet only an independent central bank, operating autonomously without the influence of politicians, can deliver monetary conditions for non inflationary growth.

We should not allow politicians to come near the conduct of monetary policy. Faced with hyper-inflation, authorities in Zimbabwe recently ordered the removal of zeros from their currency notes.

The idea that inflation can be brought under control by simply deleting zeros from the currency notes is utterly foolish. It is like believing that you spend less on the scratch cards for your mobile phone by buying more “bamba 20s”.

Monetary policy must be left to an independent central bank run by individuals who do not owe their positions to political patrons.

In 2003, David Mwiraria made a decision that led to the collapse of the government bond market when he announced in the Budget Speech that year, the reduction of the cash ratio from 10% to 6%.

By this move, the minister had freed Sh8.1 billion of liquidity into the marketplace. The 91-Treasury Bill rate went to 1 per cent. When the rates started coming up, it triggered market volatility as never seen before.

What is my point? That politicians must keep away from the Central Bank of Kenya.

Folks,

If this story is true, then Kenyans small and big must stand up in arms to get to the
bottom of this. Finance Ministry is dirty, it must be cleaned right from top including the Minister. Dont give these crooked gang of leadership thugs a chance to run down Kenya for their selfish stomach. They are infested dogs, they need mass action otherwise they will never get it. Make noise people and DEMAND for JUSTICE, dispite JUSTICE in Kenya has an iron steel padlock. Dont give in. Ask yourself why that retiring aged man Michuki is appointed to Finance Ministry. It is a scam. It is your future people, fight for it. Central
Bank must be investigated. Something is cooking.

Women, it is time to stand up and protect your owns when Legal Justice is unfairly oppressive to women and when Administration is seen to be manipulative.

It must become PUBLIC JUSTICE to protect public funds/money from marauding
shameless bald head thieves. They dont understand gentlemans way people!!!!!!!!!!

I tell you, these thieves will never BULGE. They must be confronted and uprooted by PEOPLE DRIVEN DEMANDS mass action that follows with Kicks and Blows if
possible. Dont be cowed with the polished suits they wear, they are professional thieves.
They will continue to perfect thier act day in day out. Dont give them a chance people,
dont close your mouth as well, go to the mountatin tops if possible, do what is doable.
They will continue to intimidate and silence people from exposing them, dont give them a chance. Civil Society, Vijana saidia akina mama.

Dont stay beaten down people, get up and maintain the struggle we will get there some day people.

I love you all.

Hello —

Over the last week this race has been transformed.

Barack named Joe Biden as his running mate, and they accepted the Democratic nomination at our historic open convention in Denver.

Our team is complete, and our movement is growing rapidly.  But now we are facing our first major challenge together.
