Kenya: Drastic plans to cut down family size

From: Judy Miriga

Folks,

Kenya has become a pathetic sad story. After power hungry leaders caused serious repercussion in 2007/8, it is clear, these leaders have not learned any lesson. They are at it again. Whatever their mission is, it did not start today, it is a project designed and re-shaped to take a much larger scale by 1995 and it is why Uhuru was Moi’s project and which is why, Mungiki was formed by Moi. Kibaki is the tool used by Moi, why he stole the election and was the reason for 2007/8 mayhem. Behind the scene Moi is and has remained the masterminded to see the mission is accomplished. This mission involved Land Grabbing, terrorizing homes and families, turning humanity into slaughter commission every election time. Without care, they kill at will to manipulate elections in their favor and destroys all those who stand on their way or expects to vote against their interest. They formed criminal gangs in their Mafia type of network to protect their political interest in order that they stay in power at whatever cost.

Justice delayed is justice denied……Kenyans cannot afford to reverse what they gained in the 2010 Referendum and the properly Legislated Constitutional policies will remain a way of life and a tool to re-shape good Democratic good governance with Just Rule of Law which people will rely to improve their lifestyle and livelihood in a fair mutual manner.

Women and Children have suddenly become a victim and a target by these selfish and greedy brutal monster maniacs who care the less about human pain and sufferings…….These-good-for-nothing politicians created poverty and hunger and now they put ropes on the neck of these women and children for wrongs not of their own making. They led without any plan but were busy lining their pockets which is why there were no balance and things stopped working a long time ago. Kenya has enough wealth to feed its people and have plenty of balance to trade with……..but these leaders have no brain for that. All they know is how to kill and destroy humanity and survival. This behavior must be stopped. It is way past the climax and it cannot be tolerated.

Where did the idea of cutting family size come from? It will reach a point that they will demand all husband and wives must be authorized by certification to have sex, if not you go to jail. They will device thermometors to find reason to throw people to jail……Who are these people???…….Are they translating Kenya to China……???…….Where is the freedom…….???……..At this point, nature has been completely tampered with and destroyed by these wicked monsters. This amounts to serious and dangerous slavery conditions we have never witnessed before in lifetime.

Mungiki, Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda, sabaot land defence force and MRC has become a terror squad Politicians use to destroy peaceful community and their survival as a way to get rid of people from their lands which they had in advance sold illegally and unscrupulously.

Insecurity problem in Kenya is therefore not a small thing and it cannot be solved by merely keeping the Coalition Government to continue to remain in power. It is why, cleaning the country from gangsters without cleaning the country from bad leaders will not resolve the underlying causes of careless killings and human slaughter. These groups works with the Government Leadership in parallel and they support each other.

A leader that promotes violence is not worth any sympathy. Non of the Coalition Government leaders are clean and vetting them all to clear them from wrong doing is the way to go. Yes, they are in working coalition secret network with the unscrupulous International Corporate Special Business Interest to steal public wealth resources from good people of the world……and Vision 2030 is the revelation. It is because vision 2030 has not been proper constituted and this is what each and everyone of them struggles to control…….it is why Kibaki has sent Mungiki into the rural of Nyanza and the local people of Nyanza are being terrorized daily. The purpose is to stifle development in that region until all are wiped out. In Tana River they have wiped out people mercilessly. Can we continue to allow them to go by this design? Where is Human Rights people………???

The Gangs groupings have created many funny names and recently, one such, the American Marines group raided a police station in a bid to free a member who had been detained”……Can you imagine, a group of thugs breaking into a police station ……where is the Law and Order……These are well organized paid youths who have been made jobless by political designed to be used as destroyer tools…….well-connected anti-Democratic establishment movement meant to kill Democracy for the Corporate Special Interest to do business without Law or Order or even pay their fair share of taxes or fees…….

This behavior is unacceptable and must be stopped immediately.

CJ Willy Mutunga must stay the course and do what needs to be done to put Kenya on the path of recovery.

A fresh start in leadership of Kenya is the way to go. We all must support The Transitional Caretaker Committee and in a hurry take the whole Coalition Government Leadership to ICC Hague……..They are all dirty and filthy…….Kenya must be cleaned up and proper plan of action to move Kenya Progressively forward is the way to go people……

Militia behind Kenya’s Tana River Killings, Say Villagers
by Naharnet Newsdesk 14 September 2012, 05:20

Villagers targeted in a recent wave of tit-for-tat killings in southeast Kenya say trained militia, including men from outside the region, are behind the raids.

And they suspect politicians may have brought them in.

The killings have pitted the Pokomo, a farming community, against their Orma pastoralist neighbors in the Tana River region.

Clashes between the two tribes are normally attributed to disputes over water and grazing rights.

But local people say the latest violence — in which more than 100 people have been killed in less than a month — is largely fueled by politics.

“We were born into the conflict between Pokomos and Ormas,” Kadze Kazungu, a Pokomo, told AFP in front of the blackened walls of what was once his house in Chamwanamuma village.

“We have fought over land and water before.

“But whenever that occurs, elders from both tribes always find a way of resolving the issue,” Kazungu added.

“This time it is not about land. It is politics. Bad politics.”

On Wednesday an MP from the region was charged with inciting violence.

Dhadho Godhana, the MP for Galole in the Tana River delta, denied the charges and was released on bail pending another hearing set for October 2.

But he has been dropped from his cabinet position as assistant livestock minister.

Kazungu’s house was torched on Tuesday when Ormas launched attacks on several villages, killing four people and burning hundreds of homes.

The attacks were in retaliation for what was described as an attack on the Orma by the Pokomo they day before. But the villagers targeted say the assailants were not all Pokomo — and were not all local people.

“Amongst the attackers were Pokomo boys I’ve known since they were small…,” said Hadija Guyo, an Orma woman in one of the villages targeted told AFP.

“But the majority of the attackers were people we had never seen,” she added.

“Most of them did not even look like Pokomos.”

The attackers were not villagers angered by a group of pastoralists, she said: “They attacked us with so much precision and in so little time. These were trained people.”

The raiders came from all directions to surround the village, she recalled.

“The few who had guns were at the front, those with machetes behind them and then those with petrol and matches at the back,” she said.

Another witness, who asked to remain anonymous, described how the assailants used whistles to coordinate the attack.

“They would whistle and a group would change direction and attack houses in a different area of the village,” he said.

“They would whistle again and those with the guns would move back a bit as the ones with machetes moved to the front.”

A policeman, who was at the scene and who also spoke on condition of anonymity, told AFP the raiders had stretchers made of branches and blankets with them.

“Their aim was to leave no man behind,” he said.

For him, that meant that the assailants did not want any of their men who might be injured or killed to be identified.

Guyo accused the Mombasa Republican Council, a Mombasa-based secessionist group that was until very recently outlawed, of being behind Monday’s attack, in which 38 people were killed.

It is believed that while the Pokomos are sympathetic to the secessionist cause of the MRC, the Ormas and other pastoralist tribes are against the group.

But Kazungu was cautious about such accusations.

“I cannot comment on the involvement of the MRC,” he told AFP. “All I can say is that sympathizers are amongst us.”

The MRC has denied any involvement.

“Those are rumors, we are not militants,” MRC secretary general Randu Nzai told AFP.

“We do not have a militia and we do not kill. We are a peaceful group and do all our lobbying through the court,” he added.

Drastic plans to cut down family size

In Summary
Ministry proposes to reduce the number of children per household by half as worries over population boom lead to a new plan of action

The government wants to halve the average number of children that Kenyan women can give birth to.

The new policy is meant to put a stop to the fast ballooning Kenyan population within the next decade.

If all goes according to plan, Kenyan women will, on average, give birth to 2.6 children over their reproductive age of between 15 to 49 years.

Currently, the women give birth to an average of 4.6 children.

This is one of the proposals contained in the new Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2012 on Population for National Development passed in Parliament this week.

The move is part of plans to control the growth of Kenya’s population, which is expected to nearly double by 2030.

According to the document, the population is expected to reach 77 million by 2030 when Kenya’s economic blue-print, Vision 2030, expires.

The country’s population stood at 38.6 million in 2009 when the last National Housing and Population Census was carried out.

It is estimated that the country’s population grows by 2.9 per cent — or one million people — annually, a figure the ambitious policy seeks to reduce by nearly half.

Escape childhood death

The policy also sets other targets meant to enable newborns escape the dangers of disease and malnutrition that contribute to early childhood mortality.

The policy envisages that the number of children dying before celebrating their first birthday — currently 52 out of every 1,000 live births — will reduce by half.

Mothers will also be helped to give birth safely, helping to cut their deaths during delivery by nearly half.

Eventually, a healthy growth of the young ones is expected to help raise life expectancy, or the number of years children can live, from the current 57 years to 64 years by the end of the policy period.

Kenyans will also be persuaded to delay the age at which they get married and reduce the number of children they give birth to by at least one.

That would mean that the average age for one to marry would be raised from the current 20 to 23.

Such campaigns would also seek to create awareness that can make men to prefer having a mean ideal number of three children as opposed to the current four.

Women’s mean ideal number of children will also go down by a child from the current preference of four.

Under the campaign, teenage pregnancies will be reduced.

Also targeted for reduction is the number of people who die annually. Currently, 13 people die for every 1,000, a figure that would be reduced to seven.

Policy ‘a good document’

MPs were unanimous that the policy was a good document that would help the country navigate the problems of population pressure.

Moving the motion on Tuesday on behalf of Planning, National Development and Vision 2030 Minister Wycliffe Oparanya, Mr Simon Lesirma, the Provincial Administration and Internal Security assistant minister, said the document had been written following wide consultations.

“It is a good policy,” Mr Lesirma said before he opened the floor to contributions from his colleagues.

“The policy recognises that improvements in socio-economic conditions, especially improved levels of education and income, have a significant effect in reducing fertility and mortality.”

The assistant minister said the policy advocates the use of various family planning methods as a short-term measure for fertility reduction without compromising the rights of individuals and couples.

Seconding the motion, Medical Services Minister Anyang’ Nyong’o said the policy was important for planning.

“Without a good knowledge of the demography of the country, its structure, geographical spread, the manner in which it uses space and its health status, we cannot plan effectively,” Prof Nyong’o, a former Planning Minister, said.

“We need to get all the variables derived from the study and analysis of our population,” the minister said.

Prof Nyong’o said the devolved system of government would rely on statistics on population to help determine how resources would be moved to the grassroots level.

It would also help the national government to determine how to distribute the Equalisation Fund, which will try to address forms of inequalities that will still arise when devolved resources are distributed to the counties.

The minister said the government needed to deal with the prevalence of disease among the poor.

“I think this Sessional Paper will provide us with data on the poor in urban areas, where public policy that can affect the development of slums will be very important in including these poor into the central matrix of national development,” he said.

Slums in the towns

Nominated MP Millie Odhiambo-Mabona said lack of proper planning of families had led to fast growth of population that had caused a proliferation of slums in towns and cities.

She said there were many households in Kenya, which were led by children and elderly persons, who were also taking care of children that are orphaned, mainly as a consequence of HIV and Aids.

Ms Odhiambo-Mabona praised the policy, arguing that it focused on improved maternal health, combating HIV/Aids-related diseases and ensuring environmental sustainability.

The nominated MP called for efforts to ensure “reduced fertility and mortality rates” and make it possible for substantial resources to be freed for national development.

Finance Minister Njeru Githae criticised MPs who call upon their constituents to give birth to many children for the sake of obtaining political support.

From the policy, he said, “we have again seen that low-income people tend to have larger families and you have to ask yourself, why?”

People with high income tended to have smaller families, he said, adding: “People in the high-income groups live in large maisonettes with many bedrooms, which most of the time are locked because there are no children to sleep there.”

Mr Githae said population can be an asset but it must be well educated.

“It must be a population which has jobs and other means of livelihood,” he said.

The policy was developed by the Ministry of Planning and National Development to replace an earlier one that expired two years ago.

USA: Zip. Zero. Zilch.

Dear Readers,

Zero. Zip. Zilch. That’s the number of times women or women’s issues came up in last night’s debate.

Women are driving participation in this election. Women’s issues–from access to affordable contraception and health care to pay equity–have dominated the political debate since February. And also, by the way, we are 52% of the population. So it’s no wonder that focus groups from last night’s debate are showing women outraged that these issues didn’t come up even once.1

We deserve to have the issues that affect us directly and that millions of us care so deeply about debated by the presidential candidates.

That’s why so many of us fought so hard to get the Commission on Presidential Debates to appoint a female moderator for the first time in 20 years. Candy Crowley will be moderating the next debate, and while the format will be a town hall, Crowley will have a say in what questions get asked and she’ll control the follow up questions.

Can you sign the petition asking Candy Crowley to make sure issues that impact women–like birth control, pay discrimination and access to health care services–are included at the next debate? We’re hoping to send her and her staff comments and signatures from thousands of concerned women by Monday morning.

Add your name.
http://act.weareultraviolet.org/sign/crowleydebate/?akid=198.6000.Cw-wUr&rd=1&t=3

When you sign the petition, you can add what questions you would like to see asked in the comments box and we’ll make sure to get that over to Crowley and her staff on Monday too.

Last night covered a host of issues that are deeply important to women and men–like job creation, tax policy, student loans and the future of Social Security and Medicare. But a lot of equally important issues–like the ability of government to interfere with the personal medical decisions of women or whether pay equity protections need to be in place–were wholly ignored. And that’s not fair to women and their families.
Under-representing women and the issues that matter to them is sadly not a new problem in politics or media coverage of elections. This year alone, news coverage of Planned Parenthood featured quotes from women just 26% of the time. In coverage of birth control women were only quoted 19% of the time. Even NPR only quotes women 23% of the time.2

And if there were ever an election where women needed the loudest voice possible, it would be this one.

Time is short, but Candy Crowley and debate organizers are watching the reaction to this debate closely as they choose topics and questions for the next one. Focus groups are showing that women are frustrated–and we need to show Crowley and the rest of the debate organizers how many of us are demanding that issues we care about are included. Please sign today.
Add your name today.

USA: They won’t budge

From: Nita and Shaunna, Ultraviolet

Dear Readers,

Amazing! Since Friday more than 70,000 people have signed the petition telling Hobby Lobby to drop their lawsuit and agree to cover all forms of birth control — including customers, like Debbi H. from Texas, who wrote “And here I am planning a fabric purchase. Guess I have to go to Michael’s or JoAnn’s today…”

But Hobby Lobby isn’t budging–in fact right-wingers are flooding their Facebook page with messages of support. So we have to turn up the pressure.

Companies care a lot about their social media presence, and because the Facebook page is public, tons of people see it, mostly customers. Hobby Lobby depends on its customers for success, so we need to make sure thousands and thousands of us let them know how upset we are about their lawsuit.

If you’re on Facebook, can you post a quick note on their public Facebook page?

Post to Hobby Lobby’s Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/HobbyLobby

Here’s a sample message you can post on Facebook, but please speak from your heart and be polite. Your message will be more powerful that way: “It’s a woman’s personal decision what kind of birth control is right for her body, and all women deserve affordable access to contraception. Your decision to sue over the contraception mandate is really disappointing. I won’t be shopping at your stores unless you drop this suit.”

If you’re not on Facebook, you can give them a quick call. Just click here for the info.
http://act.weareultraviolet.org/call/callhobbylobby/?akid=189.6000.utkjSI&rd=1&t=4

This is bigger than just Hobby Lobby–this is about the precedent it sets and how dangerous it is for women. US companies can’t flout the law just because they don’t like it. Allowing company management to impose their beliefs on employees is wrong. And we should not stand for it.
Here’s what a few other Hobby Lobby customers have had to say so far:
Begin quote
“I am a woman who shops at your stores. I like that you feel strongly about your religious beliefs. I do not like that you want to dictate your beliefs to your employees in the form of health care denial. It is not up to you to judge how a women takes care of her health care. That is between her and her doctor. You are an employer not a health care professional. This is America you don’t have to use these services but you have no right to tell your employees they cannot have access to them.” –Cecilia B. From Ohio

“I own a small ceramics shop that regularly purchases supplies at Hobby Lobby, but I didn’t know of its support of the notion it can deny women access to areas of health care that concerns only them, not them and their employer. I will find another vendor for my supplies until such time as Hobby Lobby changes its stance on this issue.” — Kevin R. South Carolina
End quote

All women deserve access to affordable birth control and the kind they use is their personal decision–not Hobby Lobby’s. And Hobby Lobby needs to hear that message from women everywhere today.

Thanks for speaking out.
–Nita, Shaunna and Kat, the UltraViolet team.

Hobby Lobby isn’t budging on its dangerous anti-contraception lawsuit. And now the right-wing is flooding their Facebook page with messages of support. They need to hear from the thousands of us who want them to drop the suit and support affordable access to birth control for all women. Can you post a message on their Facebook page?

Members of the Lowland Community, the organizing committee and Gethsemane Garden Christian Center students, staff and family are inviting you to a fundraiser in aid of the center on Saturday, August 18th, 2012 in New Jersey, USA starting at 5p.m. to 12 a.m. @ the American Legion Post 401, 148 Major Road, Monmouth Junction NJ 08852.

Gethsemane Garden Academy and Gethsemane Garden High School for orphans are the new Starehe of Kenya located on Mfangano Island in Suba District.

The center, which was started in 2003 for orphans from Kindergarten to third grade, has expanded to 12th grade or Form 4. It has been largely financially supported by well wishers from U.S. who have visited the school from time to time.

The center wants you to be part of its success as it makes history.

The school started from a humble beginning, a loving vision of supporting a few children who lost both parents to the dreaded HIV by a God chosen couple Mr. Naphtaly Mattah and his wife Nereah Mattah. Like the children of Israelite the number multiplied very fast and God’s miracle worked its way to now 535 students. Gethsemane now prides itself with strong candidates distributed in academic giants such as Alliance Boys and Girls, Starehe, Mangu, Moi Girls Eldoret, Maranda to mention a few. KENYA: MAN COMMIT SUICIDE OVER WIFE’S ALLEGED INFIDELITY

BY DICKENS WASONGA.

RESIDENTS of Wath Orego Village of Kisumu’s Winam division woke up to a rude shock on Monday last week after they stumbled upon the body of a man dangling on a tree outside the gates of one of the homesteads in the area.

According to the residents who spoke to this writer, the deceased identified as Ronald Omondi 27 reportedly committed suicide to protest his wife’s alleged unfaithfulness.

The deceased who hails from Kamrongo Village of Miwani division is said to have trekked to Wath Orego, his in-laws place where he allegedly took away his life by hanging himself with a rope a to a tree right at the gates leading to his wife’s rural home.

Sources who claimed to have known him told reporters that before his death, the deceased had on several occasions visited his in laws and sought help from them over the alleged infidelity practiced by his wife.

They claimed he was not helped by the in laws whom they alleged defended their daughter over the accusations.

Those close to the family claimed the two disagreed repeatedly and the woman was always going back to her parents whenever they fell out.

Through a suicide note left behind and recovered by villagers at the scene where he ended his life, the deceased gave a detailed account on why he committed suicide.

He wrote in the suicide note that he chose to hang himself than continue to face frustrations visited upon him by his wife.

The police from Kondele later took away the body of the deceased person for postmortem.

Kenya: The Port City of Asmara

From: odhiambo okecth

Friends,

As I make this posting, my heart is with my kid Sister who has just lost her Husband. May the almighty God rest his soul in peace and give my Sister the strength to bear the loss.

Now, The East Africa Youth Forum 2012 was hosted in the Port City of Asmara from the 7th July 2012. The Forum was attended by several Youth Leaders from across the whole of East Africa.

[image] the University of Nairobi- Chiromo Campus.

One thing that surprised all the participants was how clean Asmara is. I am told, they did not see any single dirt. And yet, Eritrea is only 21 Years into their Independence.

One thing that stood out for the Youths was the resolve by the Public Officers to do their work. They make it so easy for the general populace to fall in place and maintain Law and Order.

I bet we must do something in Kenya.

I am happy to report that The Clean Kenya Campaign has taken root and the Government Agencies concerned are working with us to ensure that as we celebrate 50 Years into our Independence next year, a Clean Kenya shall have been achieved.

This is a deliberate deliverable initiative and on the 28th August 2012, we will be hosting The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management at the KICC where we will look at Practical Steps that we must make in the Process of Separation of Waste at Source. A Strategic Planning Session for this will be hosted on the 31st July and all those whom have been invited are very key to the success of this Campaign.

A Clean Kenya at 50 is very possible. Eritrea has achieved it. Rwanda has achieved it. Why can we not achieve the same?

Dear Reader,

Tomorrow, Republicans in Congress are going to vote, again, to repeal the Affordable Care Act–the most pro-woman piece of legislation in decades, and a law that is going to help tens of millions of people get health care who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford it.

They tried to defeat the bill in 2010 and they failed. They tried to get the Supreme Court to overturn it and they failed. They tried to gut birth control coverage in the bill and they failed. In fact, this will be the fourth time they have voted to completely repeal the whole law in the last few years.

Far-right conservatives have succeeded at one thing though, distracting Congress from dealing with serious issues facing our country, like the economy.

It’s time for all of us to rise up and send a strong message to these politicians: Enough is enough. Can you sign this petition telling Congress that health care is here to stay and it’s well past time to move on to urgent business–like creating jobs and ending pay discrimination against women and families?

Add your name to the petition.

The fact is that when health care reform passed and the Supreme Court upheld the law, millions of working Americans won and billionaire insurance company CEOs lost. These members of Congress just can’t accept that–and they want their giant corporate donors to know it.

In the last few years, the right-wing Congress has tried to:

Take away health care from women and families, votes they have taken repeatedly.

Cut funding for Planned Parenthood–the only source of health care for millions of low-income women.
Restrict access to reproductive health care.

Take away birth control coverage from millions of women.

Jobs? This Congress has failed to create a single job in these last two years. But they did manage to:

Reject equal pay protections for women.

Refuse to allow women and families paid sick leave so that they can care for their ailing parents or kids–or themselves–without fear of losing their jobs.

Roll back protections for survivors of domestic abuse–leaving millions of women at greater risk of violence.

This is crazy. And it’s time to let them know that we, women and men voters all over the country, are paying attention and aren’t going to let them get away with distraction politics.

Please sign today.

Add your name to the petition.

Thanks for speaking out,

–Nita, Shaunna and Kat, the UltraViolet team

Tomorrow Congress is going to vote to repeal health care, again. Can you sign this petition telling them that it’s time to accept that health care reform is here to stay? Congress has to move on to urgent business–like creating jobs and ending pay discrimination against women and families.

Kenya: Ojode’s brother is blasted over his late brother’s property claims before the deceased could rest in his grave

OJODE’S ELDER BROTHER IS BLASTED BY CLAN ELDERS FOR ACTING IN HASTY AND HARASSING THE LATE MINISTER’S WIDOW OVER PROPERTY INHERITANCE DURING THE CRITICAL MOURNING PERIOD

Writes Leo Odera Omolo in Ndhiwa Town

Elders from the two major sub-clans in Kwabwayi have come out strongly in defense of the late Minister’s widow and scathingly criticized his elder brother Samuel Ojode and accused him of acting in hastiness and erroneously over the late Minister estate.

They termed Samuel Ojode action as hypocrisy and greediness warned him to go slow over the late Minister’s estate.

Elders from the two major sub-clans of Kwabwayi, which are known as Kasirime andKamidar spoke to this write at Ndhiwa town and made it clear that they were disappointed and not happy going by the recent development.

The law governing the property of the deceased persons is quite explicit, and it recognizes the legitimate widow of the any deceased person as the “next of kin, and prime beneficiary of the deceased’s estate”.

Other family members may ony ne enjoined and may get a small fraction of wealth left behind by the deceased, but only with the consent of the widow after reaching some kind of consensus with the entire family members.

The Luo tradition and culture also forbade any discussion about the deceased person’s wealth, property or estate during the mourning period of time. Such issue involving properties are only deliberated upon after a certain period of time ser for morning. But in the case of Samuel Ojode, “he had acted in a very hasty manner,” lamented one elder.

Within one week after the colorful and tearful sending off of the late Ojode who died on June 10 in helicopter crash at Ngong forest together with his former boss the Internal Security Minister Pof. George Saitoti.

Ojode’s elder brother had written a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Oiato Marende and asked hi not to release any compensation to the late Ojode’s Widow Mary Ojode.

Samuel Ojode said I the letter that he wanted any compensation or death benefits to the late Minister’s estate is resolve.

In the letter Samuel Ojode who claimed he was writing on behalf of their mother Mrs Ulda Ojode and other dependants of the deceased accusing the deceased’s widow Mary Ojode had flatly refused to discuss or co-operate with the family on matter relating to the deceased’s estate.

It normally takes up to three months after the deceased’s burial before anybody can deliberate on issues related to the deceased’s wealth, property and estate. All this period is reserved as the “mourning period“ It is a period of time when the deceased person is given the space to rest in eternal life, to have a good rest in his grave.

Like in the case of modern laws, the widow of the deceased is the one who is the next of kin. His first child if he is a grown up plays the role in such deliberations. The same with the second and third and so forth if they are more both off- springs in the issue with of a Luo bread winner before members of the close family convened a meeting an deliberated on the question of property inheritance and even wife inheritance.

The elders, who requested their identities be hidden for fear of reprisals, felt Ojode’ widow was being harassed an wanted her to be left alone to mourn her husband’s untimely demise and family loss

Those old times when widows of the deceased persons were subjected to a lot of harassment over propertied left behind by their husbands are long gone.

Samuel Ojode’s action might have been driven and prompted by greediness. However, he should have consulted widely before hurrying up and writing the letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly placing embargo on ode’s widow thereby escalating her bitterness about the loss of her dear husband. The young widow was devastated b the loss of her husband and needed time for reflection about the tragedy and rest.

Otieno Ogingo is currently out of the country. H e had been unwell for some time and had travelled abroad and seek for medical attention in the United States of America where he is recuperating.

Kenya: It is being rumored that some Luo politicians MPs included had celebrated the death of Orwa Ojode to the chagrins of his family and relatives

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Homa-Bay Town

What could have been a high profile burial and solemn and tear sending off of the former Assistant Minister for the Internal Security Joshua Orwa Ojode turned chaotic and almost was marred by violence following deadly rumor that a section of Luo politicians including unnamed MPs had celebrated the sudden and tragic death of the Ndhiwa MP.

These rumors were the source of high tension that gripped the funeral home when the former Assistant Minister was laid to rest at his Unga village home in Kanyamwa Central, Ndhiwa district. The anger and sentiments of hostilities were displayed openly resulting in one MP from a neighboring constituency being totally barred fro making any speech or being introduced to the mourners. The MP had to be slipped out of the home quietly unnoticed..

Another deadly rumor had also reached the ears of Ojode’s close relatives and friend that some unnamed politicians and several MPs from Homa-Bay County had hired youths and political goons with instructions to heckle and shout at certain targeted speakers during the burial ceremony.

It was further alleged that an MP from the region was the one who had sent a secret word to the goons that had blocked the vehicle carrying the late Minister’s casket from entering his Unga village home last Friday. The goons who fought a running battle with the security men insisted that the body must be taken to Ojode’s Ratang’a parents home before being driven to his own home at Unga for an overnight stay.

The sequence of event last Friday had complicated the matter for the late Minister’ family, and this is prompted his Widow Mary Ojode to deliver such a harsh statement while eulogizing her husband.

Meanwhile sources close to the Ojode family pointed an accusing finger at the Immigration and Registration of Persons Minister Otieno Kajwng’ who is the MP for Mbita, and the Rangwe MP Martin Otieno Ogindo.

The two are blamed for having politicized the burial of the departed soul of the abrasive Ndhiwa MP for political expediency.

The two senior-most politician in the Homa-Bay County were blamed for the close breakdown I protocol, Otieno Kajwang’ is the current ODM Homa-Bay County branch chairman, while Ogindo is the vice chairman, The branch Secretary is the Karachuonyo MP Eng James K Rege who is absolved of any blame as he did not featured anywhere I the burial arrangement.

But Kajwng’ who was not in talking terms with Orwa Ojode while he was alive later emerged from nowhere to the chagrins of the family ad appointed himself the master of ceremony.

The event was a high profile burial in that it was attended by President Mwai Kibaki, the Prime Minister Rail Odinga, the Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka, the entire member of the cabinet, Assistant Ministers and close to 103 MPs representing various constituencies in parliament led by the Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Otiato Marende whose words of wisdom while condolensing the family of the late Ojode was like the gospel and inspired each and every mourner in attendance.

The occasion was a very special one and required high profile public relations. The noise making youths demanding forcefully to be served with food, were some of the intrigues allegedly masterminded by the anti-Ojode elements within the ODM Luo politician prompting the Ojode family to feel that party of the huge crowd that attended the funeral were not genuine mourners, but people who had gone to their home to shade the crocodiles tears.

Civic leaders led by the Mayor of Nairobi Coun Aladwa, the mayor of Mombasa, Coun Moudhir the Mayor of Kisumu, Coun Sam Okello, heads of parastatals and quasi government organizations. The presence of the Mayors from urban centers across the country were never mentioned, and the poor protocols which were haphazardly conducted by Kajwng’ was a total disappointment.

The task performed by the Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, the Migori MP John Pesa, the Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marenda President Kibaki and the Prime Minister Raila Odinga were commendable. Their word of wisdom helped a lot in calming down the highly charged situation, which ordinarily could have easily exploded into mayhem.

A number of presidential aspirants who included the Eldoret North William Ruto and the Sabatia MP Musalia Mudavadi had been targeted for booing and heckling by the excessively intoxicated and drunken goons.

Also earmarked for booing was the immediate former Rangwe MP Eng Philip Okundi, who is currently the chairman of the ODM elections board and chairman of the Communication Commission of Kenya {CCK}.

Okundi is once again in the race aspiring to be elected to the lucrative position of governor for Homa-Bay County, a position which the incumbent Rangwe MP Otieno Ogindo is also vying for.

It was originally planned that heckling of Okundi would depict him as unsuitable person for the governorship position and unpopular.

The action by noise making political hirelings had depicted members of the Luo community as most backward people. One mourner from the Kalenjin region was heard saying, ”But we thought the Luos were the most educated and civilized lots in this country. We did not expect to behave like this.”

In life, Orwa Ojode ha parted the company with the Prime Minister Raila Odinga ever since the formation of the coalition government of PNU / ODM in 2008. He has since then never shown his face to any public function conducted by he Prime Minister, and also kept low profile during the ODM grass root elections and boycotted all the party functions.

After the constitutional referendum of November 2005, in which the orange group which was led by Raila Odinga meted a sweeping victory over the Banana group supporting President Mwai Kibaki, there was a major cabinet reshuffle in which all the ministers allied to Orange Democratic Movement were including Raila Odinga wee sacked.

President Kibaki, however, surprisingly appointed Orwa Ojode to a full cabinet minister inchrge of Forestry and Wildlife. The Ndhiwa MP, however, declined the appointment in solidarity with his sacked friends including Raila Odinga.

Ojode ha served previous as an Assistant Minister for lands and Settlement and later as an assistant Minister for Education and was the chief campaigner of Raila Odinga presidential election in 2007. Prior to these events, Ojode has been very vocal and formidable defender of Raila Odinga on issues related to national importance and was expected to clinch a full cabinet portfolio, but many people were shocked when he was relegated to the Junior position of an Assistant Minister.

The situation was so much aggravated by he fact that Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno who all along and prior to the 2007 general election was loyal KANU member and leader was given the flag by Raila Odinga. Otieno Kajwang’ had never worked in the government was also appointed to a full cabinet position as the Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons. Ojode considered himself as much senior to Kajwang in terms of parliamentary experience. He entire into parliament in 1994 whereas Otieno Kajwang;’ first entered into the August House in1997.

Before his death in an helicopter crash on Sunday June 10, Ojode had confided to this writer that he was considering the option of ditching the ODM and standing and defending his Ndhiwa parliamentary seat as an independent candidate. He said he felt like leaving the ODM, because the party was full of loose talkers and people with bad gossiping attitude.

He told me that while he was attending the funeral of Mr Phelogona Okundi in Rangwe constituency, he was suddenly attacked by Dr Oburu Oginga in full view of the mourners and accused of being one among those undermining the ODM. The incident took place when the grouping including the Prime Minister had attended the burial if the former Kasipul-Kabondo MP Eng. Pete Owidi near Oyugis. He and Raila, he said drove to Awendo to witness the opening of Sugarland Hotel in Awendo town which is owned by the former Rongo Mp George Ochillo-Ayacko, and after enjoying the evening in a large group of MP and friends he and Raila drover to his palatial home at Unga in Ndhiwa for the night. But the next day, he was publicly and scathingly attacked the Bondo MP Dr Oburu Oginga, the eldest brother of Raila Odinga. He felt that there were innuendos of bad gossiping going on about him and thereafter he choose to stay away from the group and concentrated on his ministerial duties giving the ODM party a break.,

In an exclusive interview with this writer a month ago, Ojode had recalled that similar attack was mated out to the former Deputy leader of ODM and the Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi when the latter turned up for the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga memorial service at the late Jaramogi Kang’o home in Bondo. In this particular function the Gem MP publicly attacked and savagely condemned Mudavadi.Ojode maintained that he believed the attack had contributed to Mudvadi’s departure fromn ODM. The unwarranted attack drove Mudavadi out of the ODM, so the ODm is full of bad gossipers and so called power-brokers

KENYA: THE MONTH OF JUNE AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE

From: Ouko joachim omolo
Colleagues Home & Abroad Regional News

BY FR JOACHIM OMOLO OUKO, AJ
NAIROBI-KENYA
FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 2012

Today is June 1, 2012, in Kenya it is Madaraka Day, commemorating the day that Kenya attained internal self-rule in 1963, preceding full independence from the United Kingdom on 12 December 1963.

In the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI uses the month for his general intention to pray that that believers may recognize in the Eucharist the living presence of the Risen One who accompanies them in daily life- and for his missionary intention that Christians in Europe may rediscover their true identity and participate with greater enthusiasm in the proclamation of the Gospel.

For the large number June is known for marriages that occur over the course of the month. According to one etymology, June is named after Juno (Hera), the ancient Roman goddess of marriage, and accordingly, many Romans chose to honor this goddess by having their wedding in June.

Many considered this month to be the most favorable time to marry and would be showered with luck and good wishes from the gods above if they did so. In dholuo Juno means love (hera), the goddess of marriage and a married couple’s household, which is why some consider it good luck to be married in this month.

Significantly, it is the month that parents are required to teach their children about sex with honesty and openness so that they can make good choices- your rule being that for when it is right to have sex with someone.

Discuss with your children how to protect them from abuse such as rape. Make sure your children know that there are ways to express affection-kissing and touching that are safe, that show affection without risk. Make sure they understand that sex can be a beautiful part of life.

Discuss what our children learn by observing our sexual lives and the relationships around them.

Tomorrow is June 2, in Kenya it is going to be very important day- the day that reminds Kenyans: “It’s Our Turn to Eat” by Michaela Wrong, published about John Githongo’s expose of high level government corruption.

Global State of Mothers 2012

From: Yona Maro

Niger is the worst place on the planet to be a mum, new research published by Save the Children has found. The West African country, one of the world’s poorest, has replaced Afghanistan at the bottom of the children’s charity’s annual State of the World’s Mothers ranking. The index compares conditions for mothers in 165 countries around the globe, looking at factors such as mother’s health, education and economic status, as well as critical child indicators such as health and nutrition.

The report reveals the impact nutrition has on the wellbeing of mothers and children. Of the ten countries at the bottom of the index, seven are currently facing a food crisis -with Niger at the epicenter of a developing emergency that is threatening the lives of up to a million children.

ALCOHOL IS NOT TO BLAME FOR BATTERING HUSBANDS

From: People For Peace
Colleagues Home & Abroad Regional News

BY FR JOACHIM OMOLO OUKO, AJ
NAIROBI-KENYA
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2012

Since the news made headlines that women in Kenya batter their husbands, it reminds me of what late Wahome Mutahi wrote long time ago. After Beijing, husbands are called “significant other.” That is also what you call your Thatcher.

;
A girl is no longer a girl but a “pre-woman”. You are likely to get a card from a woman who hangs along Koinange Street wearing a skirt the size of a thumb. You will no longer call her the woman of Koinange Street her business card will read: “Jane Dawn, Sex Care Provider.” She might add that she provides escort service. Hang on a minute before you call her a prostitute or a twilight girl.

The woman you are calling a prostitute will see Muite and Co. Advocates. She will sue you for calling her a prostitute. A car washer will do the same if you call him so. He is to be called a vehicle appearance specialist.

;
Please don’t forget to check whether the car radio is still there after he has cleaned the car, because his new name won’t stop him from wanting to walk away with what is not his.

If by any chance he has taken off with the car radio don’t call him a thief or he will sue you to the end of the world. He is no longer a thief but a personal property appropriation specialist.

If you happen to be of the kind called sugar daddy, that is, you have a habit of telling pre-women that you are likely to make them your survivors of domestic incarceration, your significant other, that is, your Thatcher, will not describe you as a dirty old man.

She will say that you are a “sexually focused chronologically gifted individual.” She will of course not be amused and will eventually go to court and sue for divorce. Magistrate Kidulla will not hesitate to order that you pay something called alimony, that is, real money for being divorced by your significant other.

;
This humorous story tells why some young and educated women today do not want to get married. Instead they would prefer to have a long-term boyfriend – for sex and for companionship. Many marriages today have ended in separation or divorce.

In Central Kenya there is a very strong consensus that alcohol use is the reason why wives batter their husbands. According to the survey by NACADA, alcohol consumption in the area is very high.

Although according to Part 2 of the Fourth Schedule of Kenya new Constitution, the functions and powers of the county government cover, among others, “cultural activities, public entertainment and public amenities, including video shows and hiring, county parks, beaches and recreational facilities and liquor licensing,” time for such entertainments are regulated so that men can have enough time with their wives at home.

The argument is that when the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act, better known as the Mututho Act, came into effect, it was intended mainly to protect families in Central Province where excessive alcohol consumption has resulted into many counties being unable to sire sufficient children.

A lobby that fights for the rights of male victims of domestic violence says its officials will camp in central Kenya for three months to help deal with piling cases of domestic abuse.

Maendeleo ya Wanaume chairman Nderitu Njoka said his plate was full, trying to help battered men get legal redress to pull out of abusive marriages.

Nyoki like Hon John Mututho, who is also the MP for Naivasha says Central Kenya, is a target because is the worst place where women are in the habit of beating up their men. Women beat them because they can no longer cater for their families, provide food or take children to school-above all that they can no longer have sex with their wives.

The rising cases of single parenthood, where women are taking it upon themselves to raise children by themselves, and the piling divorce cases are testimony to the sad state of affairs in the province, according to Mr Njoka.

In November 2010, President Kibaki also lobbied campaign to curb alcoholism among males, particularly in Central Province. Since then, even with Mututho law men are still drinking excessively.

Like Mututho and maendeleo ya Wanaume, Kibaki’s concern was that if alcohol consumption is not regulated then the fertility rates in Central Province will continue dropping dramatically because alcoholism among men has led to rising impotence.

Despite the fact that women in the province have staged protest marches in recent months to stop brewers from selling their toxic wares to their husbands, this has not changed the trend either.

Instead, the problem has become so acute to the extent that a minister went as far as suggesting that men from other provinces should be shipped to Central Province to impregnate the women there.

One thing for sure cannot be denied, that battering husbands and alcoholism is not just a problem in Central Province, it is pervasive throughout the country. Only that media has been paying attention to the area than other provinces.

One of the reasons why men spend too much time consuming alcohol is because Kenya is at crossroads. Many cannot cope with the rising cost of living. Unfortunately no measures have been put in place to check inflation in the country because our politicians do not have good will to do so.

Prices of basic commodities like Unga (maize flour), Sugar are unaffordable, paraffin, among others have gone up by almost over 35 per cent in the last few months. It means that life is unbearable for majority of Kenyans.

Kenya is currently under pressure to adopt an inflation management system favoured by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Inflation-targeting entails publicly pronouncing a goal that all government units set out to achieve — including importing adequate quantities of food and stockpiling fuel reserves — to mitigate impact of adverse changes in prices. Uganda has already adopted.

In the latest IMF agreements with authorities, the government reportedly promised to gradually move towards the inflation targeting method although no firm dates are stated. Kenya is using an inflation management method, which does not strictly adhere to any particular target.

Uganda adopted it probably because it experienced high inflation rates exceeding 30 per cent towards the end of last year but has since managed to bring this down as its central bank adopted a tight monetary policy stance.

Uganda came under pressure to use the inflation targeting method because its inflation rate was rising faster than in any of the other countries in the region.

A number of countries in Africa including Ghana and South Africa have adopted the method, which is favoured by the multilateral lender as a way to reduce volatility on increase in prices in the past decade or so. South Africa adopted it in 2000 while Ghana did so in 2007.

South Africa appears to have been successful so far in sticking to its target. Headline inflation stood at 6.1 per cent in December, close to the three to six per cent target set by the government. The slight deviation from the target is the first one in two years.

Last year, Ghana’s inflation stood at 8.8 from 10.7 per cent in the previous year, higher than its long-run target of five per cent. Since 2007 when it adopted the method, it has not hit the target on an annual basis, raising queries of its usefulness.

KENYA: WHY IT IS DIFFICULT TO RECOVER FROM SEX ABUSE

From: People For Peace
Colleagues Home & Abroad Regional News

BY FR JOACHIM OMOLO OUKO, AJ
NAIROBI-KENYA
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2012

Following my recent article on lesbian nuns in convents and how difficult it is to recover from sex abuse, one of the regular regional news readers and a parent responded: “Dear Editor, thank you for your article on Sister Jesme who was abused by her fellow nuns when she was sent to teach plus-two students in St Maria College.

;
What touched me on your article and has forced me to respond to it is how Sister Jesme described the mental torture that novices are subjected to when they are abused. In the book, Sister Jesme refers to the helplessness that nuns face when they are sexually abused in a convent.

“When a woman is molested, sexually harassed, will she speak out? Only one out of a thousand will speak out. So think of nuns! They will never speak out. They fear that their nun-hood will be lost.”

You also mentioned why it is very difficult to recover from the abuse because the psychological impact is horrendous and it affects the victim to the core of their being. It has repercussions throughout their life. Without a real concerted effort of healing, the victims really don’t get over it.

Now I want to tell you a story of my own daughter who was in a boarding school and over a sudden she told us that she did not want boarding school anymore and wanted to go to day school. She did not tell us the reason why she did not want boarding anymore.

Now she is in college but we see her not herself. Could it be that she was molested in school and that is why she was insisting she did not want boarding school anymore? Again could it be if it all she was abused and shy to tell us is the reason why she looks disturbed?”

Probably before I go straight to whether girls or boys are sexually abused in boarding schools allow me to share with you a story of Michael Uka who was abused by a Dutch priest who had worked in Kenya for 18 years.

Uka was only 14 years old when the priest invited him to his room and gave him coffee, after which he took him to his room where he started touching him immediately”. When Uka tried to resist the priest forced him into sex and being young he had no alternative but to give in for it.

When Uka asked him why he was doing that to him since I have never seen this happening before, the priest who later became a bishop responded by telling me that when you meet with father Gerry in his room I am told you do the same thing I am doing on you. Gerry has since been stripped of his priesthood.

The bishop, who is now living at a retirement home in the Netherlands, continued with the abuse. This was the first Dutch bishop to be punished by the Vatican for sexually abusing a minor.

Even though he is no longer permitted to perform the duties of a bishop or a priest, Uka has never recovered from the abuse. He says he feels isolated now that the abuse has gone public.

“Sometimes I regret speaking. I don’t regret the fact that the bishop has been sent away. But it’s very hard because people talk rubbish about me. They ask me why I have spoken out about this.’ Uka also says he’s afraid his children will one day find out about his past. ‘If it weren’t for these problems following me, I would have been a good father,’ Uka said recently during the interview.

What hurt Uka most is when the bishop refused to acknowledge the abuse during a meeting arranged by the members of his congregation in Kenya before the case was sent on to the Vatican.

Uka says the bishop contacted him shortly after the meeting and offered him a cow. In Masai tradition, the victim explains, a cow is sometimes offered as compensation for wrongdoing. But the cow could not change the image of Uka.

Uka said even though the bishop’s superior helped him by offering him counselling and medical treatment and some financial assistance, Uka feesl justice has not been done. “I still have faith. I still pray to God. But not in the church anymore” Uka told the press

The abuse was confirmed by then Superior of that congregation between 2005 and 2008 during the period of investigations. Asked why it took the church in Kenya to act immediately the superior said he also wondered why. This story and others demonstrate how sexual victims suffer silently.

In Kenya and many parts of the world the abused children continue to rise. On August last year the Kenyan Education Ministry Permanent Secretary (PS), James Ole Kiyiapi was reported as saying that cases of homosexuality in Kenyan high schools were on the increase.

The PS spoke in the wake of a report claiming that several girls had been sent home for two weeks from Moi Girls School Kamusinga in late July after having being accused of “lesbianism and devil worship.

The PS’ statement triggers questions about how cases of homosexuality are handled in Kenyan schools and among the youth generally. “Are we nurturing our children by sending them home and vilifying them among their peers and by alienating them at such an impressionable age”?

Such claims of homosexuality are especially rampant in Kenyan boarding schools.

Being suspended from school because of one’s sexual expression is too punitive an action and the school administration should consider taking steps that guide the youth rather than making moves to stifle them.

A major concern that Kenyan parents should seek to tackle head on, is how to deal with our children’s curiosity regarding sex, their identities and their orientation?

Great concern, compassion and attention are necessary at this time when young people are at an impressionable age and want to explore their feelings and their changing bodies.

Pushing this issue under the carpet will not make it go away and parents or guardians and teachers need to find a space to have these conversations and provide correct information on sexuality and sexual health to the youth.

The news reports which indicate that the issue of sexuality exists and the only thing left to do is to embrace this discussion in school can tell a lot how our children are suffering psychologically.

Children are afraid to discuss sexual issues with their parents, even if they are abuse because sex and sexuality have been taboo subjects for so long and are hardly addressed at home and at school.

When they are, it is in a condemning manner that suggests that there is something wrong or shameful with being a sexual being. That explains why there are several cases of the abuse that are not reported.

The case in Mombasa, Kenya which attracted the media on Feb 8 last week where six students at Moi Kadzodzo Girls Secondary School in Kilifi County on Wednesday allegedly admitted to having practised lesbianism at the school after they were grilled by education officers can tell a lot what is happening with our children secretly.

This was revealed as the government dispatched a team of education inspectors to the school to investigate allegation of lesbianism within the learning institution. The probe team led by Kaloleni District Education Officer Julius Nkarichia confirmed that the students who had been sent home to bring their parents to school admitted practising lesbianism.

The school principal Dorcas Kavuku got reports from the general students’ body that these particular girls were not behaving according to the school rules. They practised lavish touching and kissed each other which is not normal for people of the same gender. This is because in Kenya homosexuality, lesbianism and transgender remain widely unacceptable in the society.

This latest case is yet another indication on the dilemma of handling same sex relations.

It presents an opportunity for Kenya to think of how it will handle the situation since it cannot disown the six minors who represent many others in other schools as reported.

Despite reports of increasing numbers of gays in the country, it has remained apparent that Kenya is not about to accept them. Yet it has been discovered that due to the stigma, most gay people have partners but stick to their marriages with the opposite sex to shield themselves from societal discrimination.

That is why when Prime Minister Raila Odinga ordered in 2010 for a crack down of gay people in Kenya and said those found practising it should be arrested, he had to withdraw his statement saying he had nothing against the gay community. The withdrawal indicated that he had realized that gay and lesbians are increasingly making a big number in the country.

The same year when Special Programmes Minister Esther Murugi came into sharp criticism after saying that lesbians and homosexuals should be involved in HIV/Aids programmes, Kenyans were made to believe that the practice does not exist.

It explains why parents cannot talk to their children on this matter because they assume the practice is very far from their children. They only think it involves only few people and their children are not involved.

Apart from homosexuality and lesbianism, cases of incest are also on the rise in some parts of Kenya with Nyandarua North District, with at least five reported cases of fathers, who have defiled their daughters in as many months this year according to the district children’s officer, Mr Mwaniki Kungu who says three cases were reported last year.

Incest is also rife in Nairobi among Kenyan teenagers according to a new study conducted by the National Council for Children’s Service. The study revealed that adolescents admitted having sex with close relatives like uncles and aunts.

Some cases involving fathers and daughters to have sex during the day, especially in slums is happening while the mothers are out there to look how she can get food on the table.

Most of the slums in Nairobi there is no privacy between the parents and their teenage children. When father and mother are sleeping with only curtain to cover the bed room, boys and girls are sleeping on the floor.

The problem begins when they hear their parents making love. The boys will in return have it with their sisters. Or in the case where there is only mother and she has also gone for night to have sex with men who will in return give her money for food and rent. Boys and girls will take the opportunity.

No child is psychologically prepared to cope with repeated sexual stimulation for long, especially among boys-that is why eventually they end up having sex with their own sisters.

The same applies to fathers and daughters. When the mother is not around and he is with his daughter, the consistent stimulation for sexual urge will force him to have sex with the daughter one given time.

As a result most of these children will suffer from more psychological symptoms. That is why they cannot discuss the abuse, especially when it is chronic abuse starting at early ages.

According to the research traumatic stress, including stress caused by sexual abuse, causes notable changes in brain functioning and development and if it is not healed the abused will never recover for the rest of his or her life.

Kenya: Joluo, Lady Ado, Through Me Reaches You For Advice.

From: Joram Ragem

Dear Jaluo dot com,

I liked the old jaluo dot com forum which we frequently used to help one another on matters about our culture and our problems.

I am writing this open letter as a cry for help, hoping someone, maybe the esteemed Luo Council of Elders, or any good Samaritan ma ja thurwa will help me.

Here we go.

And I am Joram Ragem, you are not.

Yes, Joram Kaulikazi Ragem, wuod Ndinya, wuod Onam, wuod Amolo, wuod Owuoth, wuod Oganyo, wuod Mumbe, wuod Odongo, wuod Olwande, wuod Adhaya, wuod Ojuodhi, wuod Ragem (You may be my relative, but it matters less now. This is New Kenya!)

My dad died exactly 9 years ago. Before then we had been staying in Nairobi as a family of kids including our parents.

My father however, had another wife with whom they have not been in contact with since 1986 due to irreconcilable differences. I know this because my father wrote some autobiography of sorts and I have the original copy. Numerous attempts were made later to reconcile her and her children back into the family but she bluntly rejected the offer even going ahead to marry another man.

The ancestral land that had been allocated to my father has lain uncultivated for almost three decades. Recently my mother began to cultivate it and suddenly every one’s interest is aroused. The eldest uncle in our family has attempted to beat her up, One of my fathers brother’s has thrown a panga at her on various occasions and in the most recent incident my mother decided to approach her late husband’s eldest brother to report the matter. She was chased away and told she has no property in the family and they would bring back the alienated wife and take everything that she has.

It seems we have been sitting on a time bomb and now it is almost exploding. Word is going round that they intend to chase us out of our rural home and take everything. I have tried to do my research and even logic says the family has no capacity to dispense justice without outside intervention.

The other family has expressed their intentions of not ever coming back and my uncle wants this land for himself and has said it in those blunt terms. My family is ready to fore go that land but all we want is to protect ourselves from looming eviction.

P:s My mother refused to be inherited and the other family never attended dad’s funeral. The local council of elders is defunct and if any is to be called my uncle would most probably be a member of it and this would greatly hamper justice. The local chief cowards at him and is therefore, not in a position to tell him the truth if it is against his opinion. Both my grandparents are also long deceased.

I do not know what to do my people, but to ask you for guidance. Feel free to post your opinion here and you can reach me through Ajori at joragem@gmail.com

I remain,
Very Truly Yours
Lady Ado

Kenya: Tea farmers in the South Rift who are expecting boon money from tea businesses next week advised to keep away from twilight girls and con men

Writes Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town.

Tea farmers in the South Rift region who are expecting their bonus payment next week have been warned to keep away from towns to avoid the ugly scene of losing their money to twilight girls and conmen posing as “fake money-makers”.

This warning came from the chairman of the Small Scale Tea owners Association South Rift branch Joel {Bwana Maendeleo} Chepkwony.

Speaking to this writer at the posh Tea Hotel in Kericho Town. Chepkwony said that he had received information that big towns and trading centers within the region are currently under invasion of twilight girls and conmen posing as “Fake Currency” makers with the purpose of preying on the farmer’s sweats.

Owners of hotels, lodges and guest houses in the regions have also been advised not to accommodate suspicious characters be thy men or women in their facilities, especially men and women of no fixed abode.

In this context, Chepkwony said he had in minds the towns like Kericho, Bomet, Litein , Sondu, Sotik and Mogogosiek.

He said he had received information that twilight girls have been pouring into the region from as far as Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Eldoret, Miori Isebania and even from far field like in the neighboring Tanzania to come and capitalize on the boon time of tea bonuses payment, which is reported to be in excess of Kshs 8 billion for the South Rift region alone.

Chepkwony advised to receive their payments through their bank accounts or accounts or get their cash money from the nearby Tea Farmers SACCO offices within their localities. The Tea SACCOS are well spread in small trading centers like Kapsoi, Litein, Mogogosiek, Bomet.

“As soon as the farmers got their money, they should go home and plan well how to pay for their children schools fees, how to improve their family lives maintain their tea bushes to the highest standard and make good saving for other family overheads,” said Bwana Maendeleo.

He went on,” past experiences where some farmer ended up losing the entire amount their earning from tea bonuses to prostitutes and the conmen masquerading as money doublers, the groups commonly known as “Wash Wash”. Farmers should spend their hard earned money wisely, pay their farm hands, debts, build good dwelling houses for their families or improved the existing ones and paint the region good.

‘He pleaded with the farmers to void drinking joins and mixing up with people of suspicious characters and strangers. The only sensible way of avoid such characters is to stay at home with the families and pan ell for the future.

Chepkwny also appealed to he Kenya Tea Board not to license any more privately owned green leaves tea processing factories in the region unless the investors are compelled to offer 50 per cent share equity to the tea farmers. There re two existing privately owned tea factories in Belgut region, one at Kabianga and the other one is located at Chemamul. The investors in this facility must be forced to sale 50 per cent of their shares to the tea growers.

He said if this is not effected with immediate, the farmer would consider other positive actions, which may involved denying these factories the regular supply of green tea leaves from his organization’s members to force them out of business

Ends.
