TUNIS, Tunisia, October 21, 2013/ — The eighth African Economic Conference will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, from October 28-30, 2013 under the theme “Regional Integration in Africa”. The conference is organized each year by the African Development Bank (AfDB) (http://www.afdb.org), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

This year’s African Economic Conference will bring together top policy-makers, heads of state, leading researchers and experienced development practitioners from Africa and around the world to discuss issues arising from African countries’ efforts to pool resources and integrate their economies for the development of their regional and individual economies. The conference will examine the efforts being made in different sectors and areas, including finance, road transport, power pools, water resource management, fiscal convergence and labour mobility. Discussions will focus on issues specific to middle-income countries and those peculiar to fragile states. The 2013 AEC will also be discussing the constraints effective integration faces – the poorly developed network of regional infrastructure, especially in transport, energy and communications, and the unsuitable array of legal, institutional and regulatory frameworks, all of which cannot be ignored. Finally, delegates will look into solutions to facilitate regional integration.

The AEC will also provide a unique forum for in-depth presentations of policy-oriented research by both established academics and emerging talents from the continent.

Integrated African Strategy on Meteorology supports transformative development

The Third Annual Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-III) will be held in Addis Ababa from 21 – 23 October, 2013

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, October 17, 2013/ — The need for strong weather and climate services to reduce vulnerability and promote sustainable development will be addressed by the Third Annual Conference on Climate Change and Development in Africa (CCDA-III) (http://www.climdev-africa.org/ccda3) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 21 – 23 October, 2013.

Logo: http://www.photos.apo-opa.com/plog-content/images/apo/logos/amcomet.jpg

Organized by the African Climate Policy Centre (ACPC), under the auspices of the Climate for Development in Africa (ClimDev-Africa) Programme, the conference’s theme is Africa on the rise: can the opportunities from climate change spring the continent to transformative development?

The African Union and the World Meteorological Organization will co-host a side event that will identify current gaps and future needs in the provision of weather and climate services. It will also discuss a range of potential solutions through the implementation of the Integrated African Strategy on Meteorology (Weather and Climate Services), that can positively impact the lives and livelihoods of African communities.

The side event will further discuss the need for African political leadership and cooperation to strengthen and mainstream weather and climate services into the decision-making and development planning process in key sectors such as agriculture, water resources and transport.

The African continent’s weak adaptive capacity increases its exposure to climate change and limits its ability to benefit from advances in climate science. Many National Meteorological and Hydrological Services have limited resources.

The African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET) (http://www.wmo.int/amcomet) provides political support to strengthen national meteorological services to enable them to perform their mandate and thus contribute to transformative development in Africa.

The Integrated African Strategy on Meteorology developed under AMCOMET and endorsed by the African Union, positions weather and climate services as essential components in poverty alleviation, disaster risk management and sustainable development efforts. The Strategy is a key component in the implementation of the Global Framework for Climate Service (GFCS) (http://gfcs-climate.org) in Africa to increase the provision of user-driven climate services, especially in the priority areas of food security, water management, disaster risk reduction and health.

Distributed by APO (African Press Organization) on behalf of the African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET).

MEDIA contact: Josiane Uwantege/ JUwantege@wmo.int or phone: +41 78 664 41 82

Notes to Editors: WMO Assistant Secretary-General Elena Manaenkova, will chair the side event. Panelists include representatives from the African Union Commission, African Development Bank, and ACPC. Hon Saviour Kasukuwere MP, Zimbabwe Minister of Environment, Water and Climate is expected to give the welcome remarks. Give date, venue, time of side event

Background:

AMCOMET: The African Ministerial Conference on Meteorology (AMCOMET) (http://www.wmo.int/amcomet) was initiated in response to major challenges related to the delivery of weather and climate services in Africa. It is a permanent forum where African ministers in charge of meteorology convene every two years to provide political leadership and policy direction and advocacy in matters related to the development of meteorology and its applications, as well as its contribution to socio-economic development in Africa. AMCOMET was established in April 2010 during the First Conference of Ministers Responsible for Meteorology in Africa.

Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Québec, Canada, June 8 – June 27, 2014

Dear Friend,

Greetings from Equitas!

We are delighted to contact you today with details about our next annual International Human Rights Training Program. We are looking forward to another inspiring three-week program and the opportunity to meet around 90 participants from about 50 different countries.

We are inviting you to forward the enclosed Application Form, Program Information and Memorandum of Agreement to your network of human rights educators/activists and encourage organizations who you think could benefit from the program to apply. It is also a good opportunity to share with your network your personal experience at the IHRTP. We always appreciate recommendations from IHRTP Alumni.

In circulating the information, please bear in mind that the IHRTP is intended for human rights workers and educators from Non-Governmental Organizations, National Human Rights Institutions, Government bodies and educational institutions. The goal of the IHRTP is to strengthen the capacity of human rights organizations to undertake human rights education efforts aimed at building a global culture of human rights. The curriculum is based on principles of adult experiential learning in which participants and facilitators engage in a process of mutual teaching and learning. The Program Information provides a detailed description of the Program.

We received more than 850 applications for the 2013 IHRTP and it is therefore unlikely that we will have enough spaces for all of the qualified candidates. The selection process and participant profile we are looking for are described in the attached document. The Equitas Selection Committee gives priority to the organisations best able to demonstrate their commitment and effectiveness in relation to human rights promotion and education. Consideration is also given to overall gender balance, geographic representation and the availability of bursaries.

Please note that the deadline for receiving applications is November 18, 2013 and that only the 2014 Application Forms will be accepted. You can also find the documents, in English and French, on our web site at: www.equitas.org.

Should you have comments or questions, please do not hesitate to contact the IHRTP Team at ihrtp-pifdh@equitas.org

Yours sincerely,

Chris

Kenya: Africa grain experts to explore the continent’s potential as the next frontier in global grain supply at 5th African Grain Summit

From: News Release – African Press Organization (APO)
PRESS RELEASE

Africa grain experts to explore the continent’s potential as the next frontier in global grain supply at 5th African Grain Summit

MOMBASA, Kenya, September 30, 2013/ — Over 250 top leaders from Africa including business executives from the private sector, including farmers, traders and millers, non-governmental organizations, development partners, financial institutions, researcher government representatives, regional bilateral institutions, and policymakers will convene from the 1st – 3rd October 2013 to discuss key issues affecting the African grain sector. This will be at the 5th Africa Grain Trade Summit, hosted by the Eastern Africa Grain Council (EAGC) (http://www.eagc.org) at the Sarova-Whitesands Hotel, Mombasa, Kenya. The Summit’s theme is “Africa: The Emerging Frontier for Global Investments in Grain Trade.”

Logo: http://www.photos.apo-opa.com/plog-content/images/apo/logos/eagc.jpg

The summit is timely as global focus shifts to Africa’s potential to feed itself and feed the world. Africa with an estimated population of 1 billion people and an area of 30.2 million km² is home to seven of the world’s 10 fastest growing economies with a projected economic growth rate of 6%. Additionally, the continent has a youthful population, a rich resource base, rising incomes and a steadily growing private sector: all these factors make for a healthy and attractive investment environment.

At this year’s summit, delegates will focus on advocating for a predictable agricultural trade policy and price environment which facilitates public private partnerships and stimulate increased investments along the grain value chain. Additionally, opportunities for innovation and technology adoption to address constraints and increase agricultural investments in Africa will be explored as will means of optimizing intra-Africa market access by dismantling barriers to trade. Delegates will also discuss how to scale up agribusiness financing for Africa’s grain trade through Structured Trading Systems.

“The summit will be setting the stage and opening doors through establishing essential linkages and new and increased investments in grain trade in Africa,” says the EAGC Executive Director, Mr. Gerald Masila.

“AGRA is happy to be associated with the Africa Grain Summit as it will help in charting the way forward on resolving the issue on postharvest grain losses which are currently at 40% in sub-Saharan Africa. By stemming these losses we can help to increase farmers’ incomes,” says Mrs Anne Mbaabu, Director of AGRA’s Market Access Program.

During the summit, the first ever Structured Trading Systems Handbook will be launched and is envisioned as being a game-changing tool in grain trade in Africa and beyond.

This year’s Summit has received support from the Alliance for Green Revolution in Agriculture (AGRA), the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA), the Agribusiness Initiative Trust (ABI), the Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA), The East Africa Trade Hub (formerly known as USAID COMPETE), CARANA Corporation, Seaboard Overseas and Trading Group, Tradiverse Kenya Limited, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Bunge East Africa Limited, Capital Reef Kenya Limited, the East Africa Breweries Limited, Cimbria East Africa, Intertek Commodities Ltd, Lesiolo Grain Handlers Limited, Cereal Growers Association, Mama Millers Ltd, Post-Harvest Services Limited, Farm Concern International, Uplands Rice Millers and the recently established East Africa Exchange (EAX) based in Kigali, Rwanda.

Aspiring Leaders Gather in South Africa next week

From: News Release – African Press Organization (APO)
PRESS RELEASE

The Maersk Group participates in 2013 ‘One Young World’ summit that is held in Johannesburg, South Africa, next week

JOHANNESBURG, South-Africa, September 25, 2013/ — Fourteen young Maersk (http://www.maersk.com) employees will participate at the 4th annual ‘One Young World’ summit that is held in Johannesburg, South Africa, next week (http://www.oneyoungworld.com).

The annual event held by the charity, One Young World, mixes political leaders like Kofi Annan and Sir Bob Geldof with aspiring members of the next generation of global leadership.

Once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

One of the African Maersk participants is Sow Thierno Madjou, age 29, from the West African republic, Guinea:

“I see this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and network with young future leaders from all over the world. I especially look forward to discussing socio-political and economic aspects with participants from different countries – and hope to later use this inspiration to bring about positive change in my own country,” says Madjou who currently holds the role as Finance Controller with Maersk Line.

Likewise, Junaid Kathrada, age 29, is seeing the conference as a great learning opportunity where he will be exposed to inspirational leaders from across the globe:

“I hope to be able to draw on the experiences and insights of fellow delegates, ambassadors and guests as well as form networks that will enable me and the other participants to make a visible difference in our own societies,” says Kathrada who works with customer service in Durban for Safmarine.

Attracting talents from the broadest pool possible

The event is a valuable opportunity for Maersk to develop and inspire would-be leaders, especially in growth market countries where competition for the business, and for the talented people needed to drive it, is strong. In Africa alone, the Group employs more than 10,000 people – and would want to attract even more:

“The Maersk Group has been doing business in Africa for more than a century, and has operations in almost every country across the continent. We aim to reflect the communities in which we operate and attract talent from the broadest pool possible. We would like to build our diversity further,” says Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Deniz Kirdar True, from the Maersk Group.

Maersk encourages aspiring leaders to be curious

The Maersk Group likewise sees value in exposing the talent to One Young World as a way to further broaden their horizon:

“We encourage our aspiring leaders to be curious about how things are done in other companies, industries and markets. As a Group, we can benefit by seeking out other perspectives and being open to challenging traditional approaches – and I believe that Young One World offers such an opportunity,” True says.

One delegate Patricia Pretell from Lima, Peru, is a speaker in the One Young World plenary Global Business (scheduled for October 5th at 8:30). Pretell works out of Latin America with Damco, the logistics arm of the Maersk Group. The additional thirteen Maersk participants represent several different Maersk businesses and countries, including India, Brazil, South Africa, Guinea, Morocco, Philippines, China, Pakistan, Jordan and Nigeria.

The conference that will take part 2-5 October 2013 will focus on a number of issues, including education, youth unemployment, Human Rights, Global Business, Leadership & Government, and Sustainable Development. For more information on the conference, visit http://www.oneyoungworld.com

FKPV Radio -Diaspora Voting Discussion with Presidential Candidates Kenya 2013

From: AKPA

Proudly Kenyan…..A tribute to one that fell and the legacy they left behind in our beloved country.

Dear…
The tribute last night at the museum was moving, so in keeping with the depth, height, breadth and weight of the late professor’s writing. The siege at Westgate is still ongoing and a climate of fear permeates the air, but about 150 people showed up. Love and respect were palpable in the room. Two of Professor Awoonor’s sons, his daughter and niece, the Ghanaian High Commission and several Ghanaians came. We sang the Kenyan and Ghanaian national anthems. Most of us read from his works, many of which are elegies, hauntingly beautiful funeral songs inspired by his Ewe traditions. Kwame Dawes’ and John Sibi-Okumu’s tributes moved us to sorrow-tinged laughter. Tears threatened to overcome Nii Parkes, Paula Kahumbu and Warsan Shire during their tributes. Several others read from Professor Awoonor’s work including the Occupy Nairobi poets, Teju Cole, Michael Onsando, Aghan Odero of the Kenya Cultural Centre, Njeri Wangari who served as MC, and Binyavanga and Billy Kahora of Kwani, myself (Muthoni Garland) and others.

One of the outcomes of his passing is a surge of interest in Professor Awoonor’s work – younger poets, in particular, demand we get his work to Kenya. The irony is that Africa is where is it most difficult to access books by Africans, even the most prominent! The Ghanaian High Commissioner said to me, “Next year, I will bring you more writers from my country. That is what Kofi Awoonor would have wanted.” Auma Obama not only sent a tribute that we read, but she also confirmed that she is ready to be our next Storymoja Hay Festival Director to rally our spirits and ensure that the greater cause is not buried under by this tragedy. Nii Parkes, Teju Cole, Atinuke and Jenny Valentine insist they want to be on the SMHF programme next year. As Aleya Kassam said, “Just when we were feeling way too overwhelmed to imagine continuing on this journey, it seems we must.”

We will print out the tributes and paste them in the book of sympathy that most people signed, and give them to his family, together with the photos and voice recordings of his last class, a master-class in which he talked about ‘death and a writer’s legacy’, to his family.

Regards

Muthoni

FFrom: News Release – African Press Organization (APO)

PRESS RELEASE
WSA and the Ivorian Government are organising the 2013 High-Level Forum on Water and Sanitation for All

800 participants are expected in Abidjan from 21 to 23 November 2013

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, July 16, 2013/ — “To promote vibrant and effective South-South cooperation to accelerate access to hygiene, sanitation, and drinking water for all in Africa”.

This is the theme of the 2013 High-Level Forum on Water and Sanitation for All. Originally set up by the Pan-African Intergovernmental Agency for Water and Sanitation for Africa (WSA) (http://www.wsafrica.org), this year’s forum is being organised in association with the Government of Ivory Coast.

This is the third forum; the first two were held in Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso and Dakar in Senegal. Its objective is to provide a platform for various decision-makers and stakeholders involved in this sector in Africa to exchange information and exert their influence, thus encouraging decisions and concrete action in support of WASH in Africa.

Close to 800 participants (the minimum estimate) are expected in the Ivorian capital from 21 to 23 November 2013. The 2013 Forum has three main objectives: (i) to find the best way to take advantage of South-South partnerships for the development of business opportunities in terms of financial cooperation for the implementation of priority projects beyond the reach of national budgets in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene sector (WASH); (ii) to develop strategic alliances and partnerships to strengthen the technical and institutional capacities of southern countries in the WASH sector; (iii) to stimulate the sharing of experiences and know-how between southern countries in the WASH sector.

The third High-Level Forum on Water and Sanitation for All in Africa is of interest to all stakeholders and senior officials in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene sector in Africa. They include African heads of state, ministers responsible for water and sanitation issues in Africa, African finance ministers, as well as technical and financial partners from the North and South, mainly consisting of export-import banks, researchers, investors, NGOs, and integration and development organisations.

USA, DC; & Kenya: INVITE: African Achievements and Challenges: Learning from the Past but Looking Forward

From: Judy Miriga

Good People!!!

I don’t know how this will help people of Kenya moving forward when generally, African leaders never get it that, negative challenges with unnecessary stage shows that are for self gratification and greed are not for unity of common good of all will never take Africa anywhere.

How do learning from the past improve things if unity for collective gains is not nurtured or given prominence and are not harmonized to benefit all collectively moving forward??? Africa must stop being victims of divide and rule and unite for common good of all in order to move forward. Why don’t they practice what they preach when they are in power??? How do they expect to get a different answer when what they practice is not in line with public mandate??? You cannot have your cake and eat it at the same time.

Africa can only achieve if we all pull together joining with the Government of the day and improve policies that are fundamental and are fairly shared, and where interests of all are guaranteed and protected and Human Rights are respected. These are what people must engage and question their leaders in open fora such as these ones.

The Governing system for the people must provide lead guidance and deliver services to public in all areas of social, economic and political gains in a balance for sustainable Trading and in areas of mutual technical, science and cultural potentials that are necessary for progressive development and protection of the environment.

Staying with the basics for success are the fundamentals for Peace, Unity and Harmony where happiness is guaranteed to all and where those who struggle and make efforts to achieve their dream for good life shall never go wrong……..

I hope African leaders will humble themselves to see African Achievements and challenges in the same light so Africa can move forward without just being empty political rhetorics that are marely for self gratification……..
