PRIME Minister Raila Odinga yesterday hinted he was not involved in the reappointment of former Finance minister Amos Kimunya to the Cabinet after his perceived role in the controversial sale of the Grand Regency hotel. In an apparent reference to Kimunya’s reappointment even after the Cockar Commission found he should take responsibility for the controversial hotel deal, the ODM leader said each partner in the Coalition Government has the prerogative to appoint whoever it pleases and so cannot dictate to the other who to be in the Government.

“Each side of the Coalition has the prerogative to appoint whoever it wants and so I cannot dictate who is appointed to the Cabinet,” he said. Raila spoke at the American Embassy in Nairobi when he paid a courtesy call on US Ambassador Michael Ranneberger to congratulate him on his Government’s successful transition of power that saw Barack Obama who has Kenyan roots become the 44th President of US.

Raila said while he acknowledged the ongoing public outcry over Kimunya’s reappointment under the collective responsibility principle that bides both ODM and PNU entities in the Coalition , the latter reserves the right of its choice of individuals it appoints to the Cabinet. This latest development is a clear sign of the widening rift in the Government coming just days after President Kibaki reappointed Kimunya to the Cabinet. The Cockar Commission that investigated the irregular sale of the hotel, renamed Laico Regency, found that the Kipipiri MP should shoulder responsibility for the same.

Raila has over the last few weeks been under the spotlight in the Media for his inactivity as the supervisor of Government ministries to provide direction on the numerous cases of graft bedeviling the Government. He reiterated the Government’s commitment to fight the vice saying action was being taken in cases already identified and that action would be taken on any other cases that might come up.Ranneberger said it would not be business as usual between Kenya and his government until the culture of corruption and impunity in Government was dealt with.

I think it is ridiculuos and shameful that the same characters that made Kenyan’s maul each other a year ago have now turned full circle. It is not even clear if they are in cahoots or each side is trying to steal as much as ossible to out do the other.

For instance, is the PM complicit in the reinstatement of Kimunya to cabinet, elevation of Uhuru? Do the President’s men know about Raila’s maize shenanigans? Someone once said that the worst thing about Moi is that he himself was involved in corruption. But what makes Kibaki better if he is not involved but is silent or indeed as it seems unable to stop the carnage?

It is a shame that this historic times ala First-black-President-in USA are also times when our own history is about wallowing in the worst of times in all spheres. When you think about it no Kenyan leader-not even Raila (especially not him) has any moral authority over Robert Mugabe.

Gicheru,

It is true we cannot agree with Kibaki everytime he makes a move!! but it is just that, his moves are so tribal and open to an extend that we cant fail to see it, infact he does not care what we think. Do you realise his moves are always tribaly inclined? why for instance is it that since he became the president in 2002, the offices of finance and security has always been occupied by a Kikuyu? and in CBK he set up a commission to investigate the former governor only to replace him with a kikuyu even when the investigation is still going on. Rememer, Moi was there for 24 years and not a single Kalenjin became a finance mminister!! can that tell you something? even when I know Moi was also a tribalist!!!

And now he has re instated Kimunya even when a commission he set up to envestigate him had placed a liability tag on Kimunya’s neck!!! and to make it even worse, he is reinstating Kimunya even when Parliament passed a motion of no confidence on him. So lets not defend Kimunya just because ni mtu wa nyumba, we may never know what he did, but our leaders should always be ready to take responsibility in their actions and utterances. Kibaki should not be singing zero tolerance to corruption and yet he is engaged deep to the neck through his cronies and expect the people to just keep quite!!, So I think you will be doing your country a service by talking against the ills (corruption) perpetrated by these politicians, otherwise you may be the one seeing everything through a tribal lens!!

Good day.

i think u guys are losing track, and to be more specific, the likes of akina Jimmy G. We shouldnt compromise with these corrupt good-for-scandals ‘leaders’ of ours. Its true that a prezzy cannot please all. but should we wait and watch our country fall like its happening in certain southern african state? Let no mwanabidii defend their actions. Lets fight together, since its we who are dieing of hunger, and ALL they can do for us is just to belch at us.
The campaign begins now. Talk about it with your pals.

Truly, BROTHER-IN-RAGE.

My two cents worth,

whoever the president is…no matter what action he does….will never please everyone….hata Obama, no matter how good his speeches are,he is not loved by everyone…so whatever moved Kibaki makes…there will always be the likes of Joram and others calling him shameless, there will always be others incaserating him as a tribal being with the good of GEMA in his heart only…etc…..the key thing I believe is for us as wanabidii to carefully distinguish between rantings of disapproving members giving baseless, pointless, clueless arguments from the more genuine wanabidii who are able to look at the bigger picture and argue from a more global, less tribal, and sober point of view that looks down on tribalism and promotes nationalism.

my two cents

How can he appoint HK Finance Minister with all indications that he financed and organise ‘mungiki’ to kill innocent Kenyans and re-appoint Kimunya who was censured by Parliament because of his dubious dealings. This is simply unbelievable. It is a TRUE that Finance ministry MUST reside in Mt. Kenya region.

You are not the only one. There are a lot of people out there just as gutted. These goons need to shown that this country can do better for its people. It is Nairobi which is broken and all of us must rise up to the great call to fix it.

All of them will go home in 2012. We are going to have a very nasty campaign against these goons WEF 2010, mpaka 2012, whether they change or not, the writing is on the wall.

And when I happen to make it like the others who will try their hands, we will turn this country upside down, shaking every corner to ensure things work differently. I am sick and tired too.

    RANNEBERGER MUST GO

The US Ambassador has acted as a sycophant of PNU since the infamous stolen 27th December 2007 presidential elections in which he and Jendai Frazer were the chief PNU activists taking into account their utterances.

The US could do us a great service by removing them from sinking an burring democracy in our great lovely republic.

He has sunk so low by openly supporting corruption when he shamelessly said Kimunya’s re-instatement is OK and that Raila and Kibaki have assured him that they are fighting corruption and actively are committed to reforms.
It is dishonest for this Ambassador to say that the Grand Coalition is working when he nows quite well that Kibaki treats ODM as a stepchild!

This Ambassador shamelessly endorsed Kibaki after witnessing the latter losing the said elections! Is this democracy his government wants Kenya to have. More than 1500 souls are crying to the Almighty over their heads.
Kenyans can do without this Ambassador and Jendai Frazer.

    DR. ODIDA OKUTHE.
