KENYA: NYANZA TEACHERS TELLS OFF TSC.

By Agwanda Powerman.

Teachers in Nyanza province have dismissed proposal by the Teachers Service Commission to license them as inconsequential.

Led by the Kenya National Union of Teachers Nyanza Provincial Council Secretary Tom Olilo and Rarieda District KNUT Executive Secretary Collins Oyu, the teachers say they will not be intimidated with such proposals.

Olilo says TSC had a recognition agreement with KNUT which must be adhered to before any communication is done on issues pertaining to teachers.

He says there was no consultation and teachers will resort to industrial action if the proposal is implemented.

Oyu says employers are not suppose to license their employees but can be done by an independent body.

Oyu says teachers are now busy preparing candidates for the national examinations and should not be disturbed by such proposals.

He also says that KNUT Secretary General Lawrence Majali who attended the sittings of the Committee of Experts was kept in the dark on this proposal.

The proposal by TSC states that each one of Kenyan teachers must obtain the license like lawyers, medical personnel and engineers.

The requirement is part of upcoming changes that will overhaul the structure and operations of the TSC following the enactment of the new constitution.

Ends.
