KENYA: THE UNTIMELY DEATH OF AMBASSADOR GEORGE MICHAEL OKEYO IS NOT ONLY A BIG LOSS BUT ALSO A BIG BLOW TO THE RUSINGA ISLAND COMMUNITY.

Reports Leo Odera Omolo.

The cruel hand of death of Ambassador Michael George Okeyo has robbed the Rusinga Island’s community in particular and Kenya in general a highly valued individual personality who was a man of great value to the Kenyan society.

A career diplomat Okeyo was born on July 27,1939 at Kaswanga village in what is today called Rusinga West Location, Mbita district within Homa-Bay County.

He was born in a staunch Christian family and pioneer member of the SDA church of the late Mzee Zephania Owuor Ong’udi and Mama Philidah Nyengo who was the daughter of Pastor Johana Onyango of Kakimba in Mfangano Island.

Pastor Onyango was also the father of the late Senator Selemiah Mbeo-Oynango who in 1962 was elected to represent South Nyanza district in the tri-cameral parliament as the member of the Senate.Mbeo-Oyango was later to become the first Mbita MP in 1966 during its inception after the abolition of the Senate and Regional Assemblies under the 1962 “Majimbo Costitution” of the Lancaster House.

Mbita was curved out of the original Lambwe constituency which was later renamed Ndhiwa.Senator Mbeoi-Onyango is also the father of Ochieng’Mbeo who in 1992 won the Mathari parliamentary seat in Nairobi and later become Kenya’s representative to the East African Legislative Assembly in Arusha.

Ambassador Okeyo took his early education at Kaswanga Primary School where he passed his KAPE with flying colors and later joined Kisi high School in the late 1950s.Being close to the late Tom Mboya also a fellow Rusinga man, Okeyo was among bunch of Kenyans who proceeded to the United States for higher education. He was admitted to Berkeley University, Carlifonia where he graduated with bachelor and master’s degrees.

He worked briefly with the International Monetary Fund {IMF} Washington D.C. before returning home in Kenya and joined the civil service in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations. He later studied and obtained diploma in international diplomacy at the University of Ursula in Sweden and obtained another similar diploma from the University of Nairobi. During his long and rewarding career with the Foreign Ministry he was posted to several Kenyan missions abroad before being appointed Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York.

He was finally recalled back home and appointed the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labor and later to the Ministry of Minerals and Natural Resources from where he retired.

During his youth Ambassador Okeyo was an excellent footballer. On several occasions he and this writer turned up for Rusinga location football team during the annual festivities organized by the Low Land Association whose founder and Secretary General was the late Tom Mboya. The football matches were usually played at Sindo Trading Centre in Kaksingiri Location. The games involved the teams from the five original Low Land locations of Gembe, Gwassi, Kaksingiri, Mfangano and Rusinga Islands.

Ambassador Okeyo because of his hard volleys {Dabal} which were sending most goal-keepers panicking while other packing, especially his specialty the free-kicks outside the box earned him a nick name “Okeyo Atiu.”The Rusinga team had always come on the top of the rest. On occasions Okeyo and this writer were invited to play for the Rusinga community team in Kampala Uganda, under what was then commonly known as “Luo Majimbo League” involving teams from all Luo Locations in Nyanza and the Rusinga team had always inspired by Okeyo and came on top of the rest.

The Ambassador has battled with the bout of kidney ailment, which for a long time made him uncomfortable with a lot of pains bravely born out.

A gentleman who wore the smiling face all the time Ambassador Okey left behind two wives Deborah Ayah Okeyo and Prof Acholla Pala. He was blessed with nine children, but three of them have passed away leaving only six children all grown ups.

He will be laid to rest at his father’s rural home in Kaswanga village on Rusinga Island West Location on Sunday 16thg October, May Our Almighty God rest his soul in eternal peace.

Kenya: Professor Wangari Maathai, So You Think You’ve Left Us?

From: Joram Ragem

Professor, Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai,

I have no right to tell you to go quietly into that dark night. All I ask is that you don’t give God a hard time about leaving parts of our land arid and semi arid. Just ask that he sends moderate and consistent rain. I promise, we will continue your work to plan trees …. .sob. As for Harambee Stars playing on your day, wasamehe tuu mama. When they bring us glory, we will call them Wangari Stars, and get rid of this word Harambee! And Mama Wangari, you don’t stop amazing us even in your silent moment. Who would have thought of the best way to get rid of Hyacinth but you dear professor. If we can use this weed to gloriously slide into heaven like you have, our Lake Victoria environment will be rid of this Mbuta chocking weed, we will save trees and we will create more jobs. When your ‘Hyacinth/Papyrus-Safari Rally Car’ reaches the Heavens Gate, Ask St Peter to order removal of Hell’s Gate from our country. September was particularly awful. I am sure he will ask God to do it in a minute since He will recognize the same Papyrus that saved Baby Moses when Miriam left him on River Nile, when Pharaoh was being mean. They will know this is the same weed from the same waters that saved our generation, and not the kind Pharaoh was smoking or the kind some of our politicians could doping on especially those who beat you up Mama! Mama, one last thing, if you chose to be laid to rest on the Hyacinth/Papyrus bed made from those whe ain’t your tribe and particularly, Luo Nyanza, yet you come from the Highlands of Mt Kenya, you have also ended this demon we call Tribalism. Please put in a good word for us up there. Kenyans are inherently good people.

USA, NJ: TRIBUTE TO MZEE SAMSON NYABARO KENGOCHA

From: Tebiti Oisaboke

Dearest Family of Mzee Samson N. Kengocha,

I join with so many others who knew Omogaka Kengocha in offering our deepest sympathy on his passing. Although it is little consolation at this sad time, it should be of some satisfaction to know that in his passing you can celebrate the end of a very long and productive life.

The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived. Mzee lived to 108 years old. Many of his age mates and some younger than him have long gone latest being Mzee Okondo, Onyansi, Kiberi, Mbeche among many others.

Mzee Kengocha nicknamed “Asua” will be remembered for his warmth and kindness to everyone he met. He always had a smile, and a fruit to greet you. I remember those warm school afternoons when we used to sit on his front porch sipping our tea or munching amapera, sugar canes and sweet bananas. This makes me remember Ogutu and Ombiro, God bless their souls. He was always kind, lovable, cheerful, funny and humorous. Omogaka Kengocha had a total of eleven children among them; the late Misaeri, the late J. Abeba, the late Ogutu W, the late Ombiro M, Nehemiah, Nduko J, formerly of Jersey City, NJ and his baby brother Ogembo, J of Jersey City, NJ. Daughters include the late Jemimah Moraa, the late Anne, Osebe and Marita. Mr. Nduko Jerome relocated back home to try his hands in politics and has made two attempts to capture the Bonchari seat 2002 and 2007 in the Kisii County.

Mzee Kengocha was the longest serving employ of Itierio High School. Up until his retirement he was in charge of the kitchen department and fed many students most of them hold responsible positions both in the private and public sector in Kenya or elsewhere in the world.

May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved him. He has traveled a long and successful journey. May the good Lord in heaven rest his soul in eternal peace and save him a place in His Kingdom on the day of resurrection; Amen, Amen, Amen!!!

Rest in eternal peace, Omogaka

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

In Sympathy,
Tebitii Ogutu Isaboke

Kenya: Funeral of the mother of an ODM marred by political jostling and confrontation in Rusinga Island

Reports Leo Odera Omolo In Mbita Town.

WHAT could have been a solemn and tearful sending off of a highly respected woman who had served her people diligently in her life time was turned into an ODM public rally and marred by heated confrontation between the dozens of aspirants for the various elective positions within the County, parliament and Senate.

This was during the burial last Sunday of the late Mrs Damaris Auma Odhimbo at Kolo village, Rusinga Island East Location, Mbita district. Mrs Odhiambo was the wife of a prominent politician the late Harrison Midiang’a Odhimbo Opiyo a former member of the defunct Nyanza Regional Assembly and prominent KANU leader in the larger South Nyanza district.

She was the mother of the ODM nominated MP Millie Odhiambo. The late Mrs Odhiambo who served for a long time as a social worker with the former County Council of the larger South Nyanza district, although she had earlier trained as a nurse at the Kendu SDA Mission Hospital {Gendia} as a nurse. She is survived by five daughters and three sons. One of her sons is a Nairobi lawyer Dan Odhiambo.

In attendance were dignitaries who include Mrs Ida Odinga, the wife of the Prime Minister Raila Odinga, the Immigration Minister Gerald Otieno Kajwang’ who was the political host and acted as the master of ceremony COTU {K} Secretary General Francis Atwoli, The Lanbds Minister James Aggrey Orengo,Assistant Ministers Beatrice Kones,Elizabeth Ongoro,MPS Eng James Rege {Karachuonyo}, Ababu Namwamba {Budalangi} Oyugi Maguwanga {Kasipul Kabondo}, Nominated MP Rachel Shebesh, Dr Joyce Laboso {Sotik}, Martin Ogindo (Rangwe},the CEO of the Kenya Literature Bureau Mrs Eve Obara, who is also the Maendeleo Ya Wanawake representative in Nyanza.

Also in attendance was the ODM Director of Elections Board Eng. Phillip Okundi, several aspirants for County governor Dr Mark Matunga, William Oloo Otula, .

Minister Otieno Kajwang’, however, was faulted for having failed to recognize the presence of a dozens of members of the Suba Council of Elders led by their chairman Apollo Okeyo Omuga. The group had travelled from distance places like Suna Migori, Nyatike, Mfangano, Lambwe Valley. The master of ceremony ignored local community leaders from Rusinga and Mfangano islands and instead spent time introducing some politically non-entities who turned out only for making sycophantic outbursts for the purpose of attracting hand outs from politicians and those who were described as “ bunch” of hero worshippers.”

In his brief, but moving address Atwoli pleaded with the politician to help him make achievements for the workers. He made it categorically clear that he would not contest any political office, but want to dedicate his energy and strength to the service of Kenyan workers, further saying that this would be his last mission and he would not seek for another term of office.

One of the leading contenders for the position of governor Dr Mark Matunga told his opponent for the same seat who were present and who included the former MP for Rangwe Eng.Phillip Okundi that they should expect a bruising battle for the seat, which he was sure for certain that he would beat them all at the polls with comfortable majority of votes.

Another aspirant Opiata Odero who is a close relative of the Odhiambos and a resident of Rusinga island only made a traditional war-cry and sat down amid prolonged laughter made a war cry and sat down.

Prior to the funeral ceremony, there was evidence of jostling for power as to who is suitable to contest the Mbita seat in the next general election as Otieno Kajwang’ his decided to move a high notch to contest the Homa-Bay Senate seat. The strong jostling was between the supporters and relatives of the two local politicians Millie Odhimbo and Phares Ogweno Ratego an executive with an NGO in Nairobi who has declared his interest in contesting the same seat.

Millie Odhiambo and Ratego hails from one village called {Kolo} and have close blood relationship while their homes are situated only 100 yards apart, and the jostling almost marred the funeral ceremony, but the situation was saved when Ratego steered clear of making any speech at the tension parked funeral ceremony. Supporters of Ratego insisted that Millie Odhiambo is married to a Zimbabwean husband therefore she is a foreigner in Mbita and that Zimbabwe is her home turf and that even in Zimbabwe there is also a parliament and she should go and contest for a seat in Zimbabwe Parliament instead of Mbita. Due to tension that prevailed, Rtego was prevailed upon by elders to keep away from making any speech at the gathering which he obeyed, though he was present.

In her summary of the event, Millie Odhambo who was full of uncalled fore self-glorification styling herself as “Amillo Geza Geza Nyar Rusinga” heaped a lot of praise to a Nairobi businessman Sammy Wakiaga who he said had contributed immensely towards her mother’s funeral expenses and thanked him whole heatedly.

Wakiaga got another showering praise from Obilo Opiyo the brother of Odhiambo Opiyo and brother in-law of deceased who said the Nairobi businessman had donated to him as a person Kshs 30,000 to assist him take care of hundreds of guests and funeral attendance and expressed the family gratitude.

The Lands Minister James Orengo told the mourners that it was time for President Mwai Kibaki to endorse the candidature of Raila Odinga as his successor the same way Ral had endorsed him in 2002. The late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, said the Minister had also endorsed President Kenyatta’s leadership in the early 1961, it was therefore as a good gesture of appreciation of the Kikuyu his time to keep the field open for Raila’s presidential bid.

The Minister said that as far as political situation I the country stands today, if Kibaki endorses Raila for the presidency, the country would be peaceful and the transition would be very smooth. Kibaki has already declared that he will not endorse anybody for the next presidency, but Orengo argued that this would not augur well with his legacy of ten years presidency, smooth.

Former Information Minister Raphael Tuju who has declared his bid for the presidency came under scathing criticism. Orengo said Tuju is heading for a failure and will not make it to anywhere. “If I personally failed to tame Raila when I stood for the presidency in 2002 against him, I expect Tuju to perform much poorly..

Some former and present civic leaders in South Nyanza, who of lately have become politician for hire, attacked Tuju saying he had been sent to spoil the field for “Agwambo” but their utterances carried no weight and were ignored as they are known to have perfected in the art of political sycophancy ready to be hired by anyone with money to go and vilify his opponents.

They argued that according to Luo tradition virtue and cultural value, a woman is not suppose to go to a front line in a war.-in her home of birth because she transformed by the virtue of her marital status to be a foreigner and an outsider.

Mrs Odhiambo funeral attracted thousands of grim faced mourners who included members of her family from Kanyada Kanyabala near Homa-Bay the family of her husband, friends and relatives

REST IN PEACE WUOD KASAYE

Today marks exactly eight years since we bade farewell to one of our own,the late Dr.Zachary Okong’o Ajiki whose untimely death brought sorrow all over the well known Kasaye village. The family and friends are yet to come to terms with what transpired on the fateful day. They were left speechless and they still are today even as they mark this eighth anniversary.Your untimely death left a vacuum that shall never be filled. The people in whose shadows you walked and whose souls you touched cannot afford to forget such an enduring, charming guy who you were and still is on your death bed.Fondly missed by your friends, sons, daughters and all the people who had interacted with you in one way or the other.Your acts of heroism shall forever remain embedded in our minds even as we learn to appreciate the fact that you are no more. What else can we say when our hero is no longer in our midst?Who can we present our grievances to with you miles and miles away from us?These are questions that only your presence could answer but as things stand now,we may not be able to answer them till we join you in the far off lands away from the cares and worries of this unjust world. Our tears are still flowing, the pain is still as fresh as it were then, the sense of loss can never be forgotten.YOU WERE OUR HERO.REST IN PEACE WUOD GI BOLLOH.
