NCEC’s tribute to Mzalendo Kihara Young

From: orina Nyamwamu

Mzalendo Kihara Peter Young, Fare thee well our Hero and Beacon of Hope in the struggle

NCA-NCEC sends condolences to the family, friends and patriotic citizens of Kenya for the loss of Mzalendo Peter Kihara Young. Kihara Young succumbed to cancer on September 26, 2010 at Nairobi Hospital at the age of 75.

Kihara young was a founder member of the National Convention Assembly (and its executive arm NCEC) in Limuru on April 4, 1997 when he with 2,000 other gallant democrats from all walks of life assembled in Limuru conference center to form the NCA Movement which has spearheaded the push for constitutional, political and policy reforms in Kenya since then until the victorious passage of the constitution at the referendum on August 4, 2010.

Kihara young’s Life has been a gift to the struggle to liberate Kenya from colonial subjugation, neo-colonial domination of Kenya and the misrule and plunder of our nation by the irresponsible ruling class that has run down our nation since our flag independence in 1963. For this heroic struggle Mzalendo Kihara, a young Mau Mau cadre was first detained by the British colonial administration in 1954, tortured and banished to Manyani. After independence, he joined forces with Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Bildad Kagia, Pio Gama De Pinto and other heroes of the democratic struggle to oppose the vile Kenyatta exploitation and betrayal of the people Kenya. Kenyatta’s administration responded to Peter Young’s uncompromising patriotism and dedication to the masses with cynical torture and repression. In 1969 he was arrested and tortured by the Kenyatta administration in Nyeri where he was buried neck-deep alive and there after burnt with cigarette buts and humiliated for 70 days before being sentenced to detention without trial for two years.

In the 1970s Peter Kihara Young teamed up with the pro-democracy forces in Kenya led by the likes of JM Kariuki, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and many others to oppose the backward and retrogressive Kenyatta economic and social policies. He suffered numerous arrests, intense harassment and pernicious state repression but remained consistent and unwavering.

At the height of the Moi administration’s repression and crackdown on all democratic voices in 1986, Mzalendo Young, a Mwakenya member and activist for democracy was once again, detained without trial, tortured in the macabre Nyayo torture chambers for 69 days before he was sentenced to four years imprisonment as a prisoner of conscience. This did not deter or weaken Kihara Young’s commitment and resolve to the emancipation of our nation from the evil and corrupt forces that were hell bent to destroy our nation. Upon his release from prison he joined forces with other Kenyans to form the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD). FORD became the movement and voice of the nation and pushed for the repeal of section 2A which heralded the return to multi-party politics in Kenya.

Multi-party politics was never going to be a panacea or sufficient in the struggle to build a strong democracy and a just Kenya and international society. Kihara young knew that multi-party politics without democratic governance was hollow. He therefore embarked with other Kenyans on the struggle to overhaul the Kenyatta-Moi constitutional dictatorship through enacting a democratic constitution in Kenya. This is how Peter Kihara young gave his last 20 years to the gallant struggle for a democratic constitution. Working with all democratic organizations and forums including RPP, NCA-NCEC, KHRC, 4Cs among others, He made his visible and deep contribution to building the social movements and the struggle.

This is how I met him in 1997 in Limuru and the subsequent NCEC rallies and forums to push for constitutional reform in Kenya. As the student Chairman of the Kenya Polytechnic Students Representative Council I was learning to study and know my history and my country and Kihara was always at hand to teach young people their history. In 1997 July, the Moi regime killed a total of 21 young Kenyans in several parts of Kenya for demanding for a new constitution. Kihara Young was part of the mobilization and activism for the birth of a new nation. He promised us that “Mapambano ni Maisha na lazima tushinde, lazima watu washinde”. He was so sure of what he was doing and he had been at this for so many decades I never saw a reason to doubt him. In 1999 at a RPP workshop with the tea farmers in Githunguri we worked with Mzalendo Kihara Young to galvanize and educate farmers to push for tea sector reforms which led to the KTDA being transformed into an Agency from an Authority.

When we formed the Kiambu People’s Forum in 2000 under NCA-NCEC, Kihara was on the fore front in organizing the people to resist repression and the corrupt government headed by KANU’s decadent rulers and to push for livelihoods and social justice in all sectors of the political economy. Ever since I knew him, he has never disappointed. He has always inspired and affirmed the right side of our history.

As we lay him to rest in his grave today the 6th of October, 2010, NCA-NCEC and in my personal capacity promises Kihara Young that we shall regroup and intensify the struggle for the full liberation of our nation. Comrade, We loved you, You loved us, we shall be eternally proud of you.

From: Absalom Birai Subject: 2 kinds of death!
Date: Wednesday, October 6, 2010, 8:18 AM

The Bible talks about 2 kinds of death(the death of a saint and the death of a sinner); One is precious before the eyes of God and the other one is very painful indeed. How do you mean?

Ecclesiastes 9:5 reads,” For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten.” Yes,unfortunately due to the original sin, all human beings will die some day. So whether you like it or not and regardless of your status, some day,you will have to say good bye to this world.

Regarding the death of a saint or those who has fully surrendered their lives unto the Lord ship of the creator of the universe the Bible states, ” Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints.” (Psalms 116:15). Precious because they will rise again. Really? Here is what the Bible teaches,

“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and come out—those who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned” (John 5:28-29.)

“But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.Wherefore comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)

So, if by the time of ones passing, he or she had already chosen Jesus Christ as his or her personal Savior, then there is no cause for alarm. Such a person has gone to sleep awaiting the resurrection morning.Hallelujah.

The kind of death that makes God sad and one that we all need to avoid, is the death of
a sinner. Our God is not interested with the death of a sinner. The Bible states:” Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?(Ezekiel 18:23).

If by the time of his or her death one had not set things right with his or her creator, then such is a sealed case. In other words, there is no atonement or redemption to a death sinner. No, not according to the Bible.

That is why you and I need to surrender our lives daily; daily because we have no idea when our lives on earth will come to an end.

With a determined effort to see many lost for ever, the devil deceives millions such that death catches then totally unaware. But you and I need not die as sinners. The good Lord wants to live with us for eternity. Its up to us to choose which kind of death we’ll die.

Even so Lord Jesus, please let me die as a saint. Help me to live each day as if it were my last day on earth. Amen and amen! How about you?

Kenya: AKUKU DENJA is dead.He died at the age of 94 and believed to have married over 100 wives

Reports Leo Odera Omolo in Kisumu City.

Death has occurred of one of the most prominent and eligible polygamist in Kenya Mzee Ancentus Akuku Ogwela, alias Akuku Denja {Dangerman]. He was aged about 94 years.

File | NATION Polygamist Mzee Akuku ‘Danger’ with family members. He died on Saturday.

He collapsed in one of his homesteads and died on Saturday night, but had been unwell for sometimes.

Considered as one of the wealthiest Luo man during the years of early 1940 and late 1950s, Akuku Danja is believed to have married more than 100 wives. At the time of his death he had about 43 of them have either died of old age while other left on their own volition or divorced for one or the other reasons. Mzee Akuku Denja hails from Kanyamwa sub-clan of the Luos, in the same clan of the legend medicine and the greatest witchdoctor of all the time Gor Mahia son of Ogada.

Akuku Denja had established five homesteads with the major one which he used to referred as the headquarters located at Aora Chuondho in Kwabway Location,Nyarongi Division, Ndhiwa district in Homa-Bay County. The homestead is next to the market and also next to the main-Rodi Kopany-Karungu Sori. He had another home in his native Kanyamwa with the third major home homestead established in Karungu East, Sori Division in Nyatike district in Migori County.

Standing at about 6feet 4 inches and heavily built. Akuku Denja was a humanist, friendly, jokily and wearing a smiling face all the time. He earned the name Danger because he preferred calling anyone who he comes across “Danger Man “including friends and foes, his sons in-law and relatives.

An industrious man with lust for education Akuku Denja built and established three primary school on his own where the large number of his children estimated to be in excess of 250tool their early elementary education before proceeding to other schools and institutions of higher learning.

He had the best part of his wealth educating his children some who have excelled and graduates from public universities. One of his eldest sons the late Pius Olima Akuku a trained lawyer had served the government of Kenya as a resident magistrate before going into private law practicing business.

He had many sons and daughters who received good education and who are presently serving the country either in the public and private sector.

The Danger Man was reputed as strictly disciplinarians. Most of his children spent their time at home during school holidays tending to farm work or herding his large number of domestic animals. Despite having the largest number of wives and children the Danger Man’s home is a place where famine and hunger is out of bound. His wives and children engaged themselves, in farm work resulting in good yield almost every year, which is sufficient in feeding the largest family in modern Kenya with enough surpluses for selling and generating school fees.

Akuku Denjas own married daughters are not allowed to walk back home without written consent of their husband, giving specific reason for the visit, the specific number of days permi9tted for the wife to stay at home with her parents. Any of his already married daughters who simply walks back homer without a written permission from their husband are given specific time and hours, during which they must end their visit and travel back to their husband’s homes, failure of which they faced forceful deportation out of Danger man’s home.

On arrival home the daughters’ reports at the father office and registered their presence before proceeding to their own mother’s houses. His brothers-in-laws on a visit to one of his wives must also register their arrival at the Danger man’s office before proceeding to their sister’s houses in similar fashion. The family works as a team, especially during the cuoti8vation, weeding and harvesting times.

There are unconfirmed reports that his wives are transferable from one home to the other within his five homesteads. For example he would simply walk into his homestead in Kanyamwa and ordered any of his wives living there to proceed to the Headquarters at Aora Chuodho and the woman must obey or else she could find herself forcefully being deported to the headquarters even without her consent.

Akuku Denja acquired his wealth after a humble beginning life as a tailoring man and then venture into farm produce buying and selling and shop-keeping and was later to become the first man to purchase a motor vehicle in his own village in the late 1940s.

A case in point is an incident which occurred a couple of years ago when one of his daughter who was married to a wealthy businessman in Homa-Bay, who had abandoned a small child with her husband and was seen roaming about with some youths, most of them high school students. She was seen in dance halls and other public joint.Akuku Denja sent her a warning toi return to her husband and child as quickly as possible.

When she defied his warning, the old man registered the complains with children offices and to the police at Homa-Bay. And the young mother was apprehended and sentenced to six months imprisonment for neglecting her child. While she was serving her prison sentenced Akuku Denja offered her younger and perhaps best educated sister to the businessman.

Upon coming out of prison the young mother vowed not to go anywhere, but rejoined young her husband and child so the businessman, ended up having married to two young women .from one family of the Danger Man. Whenever his daughters disagreed with their husbands on petty domestic squabbles they do avoid going directly back to their parents home, but only ending up visiting relatives in the neighborhood before going back to their husband. This has made Akuku Denja’s dozens of daughter the most liked women and men are competing to get married to them. They are loosely called “Nyar-Danger”{ meaning the daughter of danger man]

He will always ne remembered as a development conscience man who9 contributed part of his hard earned wealth towards the development of schools, dispensaries, health centers and other economic infrastructure in both Ndhiwa and Nyatike constituencies.

He was a closed friend of both the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and the late Tom Mboya, the former Minister for Economic Planning wjh0 was assassinated in 1969 and his close political associate Dr Joseph Gordon Odero-Jowi who alter served as Kenya’s Ambassador to the Un after losing his Ndhiwa parliamentary seat in the 1969,

In 1962 immediately soon after the founding President the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta was released from colonial jails in Northern Kenya and during his first visit to Southern Nyanza Mzee Akuku Denja was one among the elderly who spoke at a meeting between him and Luo elders from the region. The same happen when Kenyatta visited the region in 1966 as the president of n independent Kenya, Akuku Denja was one of the elderly spokesmen.

When Mzee Kenyatta was jokingly told by Mboya that Akuku Denja had more than 50 wives and was accompanied at the meeting by a young woman, one of his latest at the time, Kenyatta took a careful look at him and Jokingly remarked “Kumbe yeye ni Dume kweli kweli”{he is a real bull] sparing a prolong laughter by the elders in attendance of the meeting which was held at the Homa-Bay D.C’s residence.

The late Asentus Akuku ‘Danger’ poses with his youngest wife Christine Ajwang’ at his home in Ndhiwa in this 2008 photog

Akuku Denja also developed close working relations with the one time two terms Ndhiwa MPs Zablon Owigo Olang’ and another former area MP Matthews Otieno Ogingo’ Upon learning of his sudden death Owigo Olang sent his heartfelt condolences to the family. He paid a glowing tribute to Danger man, saying his loss is irreplaceable. He aid the grand old man was steadfast in development undertaking and activities and was progressive and hard working, but humble man wh9i loved everyone.

Mzee Akuku had been reportedly unwell for close to three years, and at time was seen walking with the support of walking sticks which looked like crunches. He had promised this writer an up-date interview sometime back, but it never materialized.

KENYA, NETHERLANDS, & USA: MYSTERIOUS DEATH SHOCK KENYAN FAMILY.

BY Dickens Wasonga.

A Kenyan family want the government to help it probe under what circumstances their son who was residing in the US died in Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Speaking to journalists in Kisumu , the father of the 29 year old man said they were getting unclear information on how and what might have led to the death of their late son-Franklin Otieno Othieno.

According Mr.Lucas Othieno, a resident of Kisumu’s Nyalenda estate , his late son had been a student at the Houston College in the United States of America from the year 2002 having gone there to study pharmacy.

Accompanied by his wife during the press interview, Othieno said his family learned of the death through a telephone call they received from his girl friend, a Kenyan who lives in the USA.

According the information relayed to them by the woman, Otieno died while in the custody of immigration police in Netherlands although his family had not been notified by the authorities that he was being held or was under investigations for whatever reason.

The grief stricken father told reporters that sometime in June this year he talked with this son who was upbeat about coming back home after clearing his study period.

”It came as a big shock when on Monday this week I received a call from his girl friend informing us that he had died .It was even more shocking that he died while in the custody of the police in Netherlands.’ ‘he said.

He said the family was very worried because the information they were receiving was so scanty and left several questions answered.

”His girl friend has offered very little information about how my son died. She also claims to have been informed of the death by the immigration police in Netherlands who had called her that same Sunday.” He said.

The father disclosed to the media that he tried to obtain information from the Royal Embassy of Netherlands in Nairobi but what he has so far received would not shed more light under what circumstances the man died.

Othieno claimed that while officials at the host department in Amsterdam maintained in earlier communication with them that his son had died of aneurysm, those at the Nairobi Embassy asserted he died due to cardiac arrest.

He went on to add that his son was not sick and was in constant communication with his girlfriend in the US.

”The very Sunday which they said my son died at 3.30 pm, the Netherland’s time ,was the day he had a telephone conversation with his girlfriend and according to her, he did not complain of anything.” he said.

According Mr. Othieno, the Netherlands authorities are planning to fly the body into the country early next week, a move he has objected to arguing that it smirks of suspicion.

He demanded that a postmortem be done a fresh on the body of his son and witnessed by representatives from the family and the government to ascertain what led to the death of his first born son.

Othieno also want the Netherlands authorities to deliver the body to his Siaya Alego rural home and not dump it in Nairobi. He said he was not able to raise money to bring the body to his home village for burial even if the authorities flew it to the country’s capital city.
