SONY SUGAR IN DEEP CRISIS AS CHAIRMAN RESIGNS IN HUFF AND PR MANAGER SUSPENDED

Business News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo

The Awendo-based multibillion shillings sugar complex, the South Nyanza Sugar Company is in deep crisis following the abrupt resignation of its board of directors chairman Herbert Ojwang.

Ojwang’s resignation in huff citing gross political interferences and frustrations did not come as a surprise because the newspaper had earlier on reported that the pressure was mounting on Ojwang’ to quit so as to pave the way for a cabinet members who hails from the area to recruit his own kith. The man perceived as being fronted by the Minister for Public Services Dalmas Otieno is a Mr Charles |Ogalo who hails from the Minister’s home turf, but reportedly doing business with the SONY sugar via his company which is known as Genetic , which is reportedly handling the workers pension scheme.

The farmers have appealed to Minister uto to avoiding .

The sugar cane farmers within Awendo and its environs have, however, appealed to the Minister for Agriculture William Ruto to shop for a neutral chairman, perhaps someone who hails from outside greater Southern Nyanza region, and even outside Luo-Nyanza, but such a person must be someone with proper CV in which his previous successes in managing a large manufacturing organization of SONY sugar size is cited.

The resignation of Ojwang’ came only within four days after the management had sent the Public Relations Manager Mr. Okongo’ on a compulsory leave. He was actually suspended following numerous allegation that he was peddling rumours via phone SMS thereby causing despondency among the staff , the workers and the farmers.

The suspension could not be immediately confirmed, but a source at the Awendo based factory told this writer that the PR man is actually not in his office, and he has never been there for the last five days or so.

The Awendo based company which is wholly owned by the government had just resumed its production after three weeks stoppage for its annual mechanical maintenance.

SONY is currently experiencing acute shortage of tractors for both ploughing and transportation of the harvested cane. The company, according to insiders could not purchase new fleet of tractors owing to political interference. An amorphous company called Kinda Group is reportedly wanted the company to guarantee a multimillion shillings bank loans so that they could join the firm as partners in the transport sector.

But the management see is the scheme as unrealistic, and insisting that this Kinda company should just seek for loans from the commercial banks, purchase its own tractors and join the company like other transporters. Kinda Group, according to information made available to us is being fronted and favoured by a senior politician in the region. But the pressure is vehemently being resisted by the management of the sugar manufacturing company who are reported to be readily willing to work with any transporters who can raise his own tractors and bring them to SONY without any pre-conditions and string attached, but that such a company must not be linked to any politicians of all ranks

At the same time, sugar cane in Awendo and in all other cane growing zones have heaped a lot of praise to the Managing Director of SONY Sugar company, Mr Paul Odola for having made a concerted efforts which have resulted in the company paying cane farmers nearly all the outstanding payment in arrears of their cane delivered many months ago.

The farmers said they were grateful, because the majority of them being parents were able to dispatched their children back to school after receiving their arrears for March, April and part of May this year. The company said it was making other arrangement to clear the areas for May, June and July within the coming weeks…

The General Secretary of the Kenya National Sugar Cane Farmers Union |Mr Ezra Olodi Okoth told this writer in Kisumu that his members were very happy with the Sony sugar management team for good job.

Mr. Okoth, however, faulted the company’s harvesting system, which he said his members wanted streamlined. There is still what the farmer called “Helicopter Harvesting”, which he said is prone to corruption. It gives the harvesting team free hands of jumping other farms after they received “Kick-backs” The system has left a lot of mature and even over grown cane rooting in the field unharvested and must come to an end.. There must be transparency and accountability in the company harvesting system or else we can move to court, and have this embarrassing system stopped, “said Mr. Okoth angrily.

Sugar cane is a very expensive crops and it takes a long time in the field, therefore it is very unfair for someone in the harvesting department to programme the targeted farms for harvesting selectively. We have heard that some hard pressed farmers have auctioned their cows, got the money and bribed the harvesting team so that the could help in expediting the harvesting of their cane crops. In this respect, the harvest have kept jumping from farm, to farm, leaving behind a lot of mature cane unattended simply because the farmers cannot afford the bribe money.

Okoth appealed to the government to come to the assistance of by extending credit facilities to enable the firm to purchase tractors. This is the biggest headache for SONY, otherwise the company is doing extremely well. It need more tractors to hasten its cane transportation. At the moment the company is operating at half its production capacity owing to acute shortage of tractors..

The Secretary General also appealed to all sugar factories to refund millions of shilling they deducted from the farmers earning as directed by the government The amount, he said is now amounting to close to Kshs 28 million and the arrears should be paid out in full to the farmers.

.The acute shortage of tractors, is not only being experienced by SONY Sugar, but also by other factories like Muhoroni, Chemelil, Kibos, Mumias and Nzxoia therefore the government should work out a system whereby sufficient funds is made available to the sugar company for the purchase of tractors

Re: Challenges that come with money part 4

In this last article on the challenges that come with money, I will take upon myself to write on one thing that really counts-making money!

It seems to me that given the choice, many people would rather control/manage money than go through the pain of making it!

Whichever way you may look at it, it has never been an easy task making money. As a matter of fact, many are the people who like to spend money but are very un happy when it comes to making it.

When it comes to making money, a lot of issues emerge!

1.There are countries where getting a job-any job-is not possible.
2.Many people prefer white collar jobs. There are people who can’t just do any job. It’s either this particular job or no job at all.
3.Once some people have lost what was regarded as a good job, they find it hard to do any kind of job
4.Some immigrants find it hard to do certain jobs in their new countries. They take many years to accept the reality. Some of those years are spent in thinking of old good days
5.Some try their hands in business but many times forget that even business has got it’s own challenges

So what’s the solution!

1.Find a job-any job- and start making money
2.Change your attitude and accept life the way it comes
3.Either go back to school or do some kind of course that can improve your economic status
4.In your pursuit for money, set time a side for your family
5.Remember that you will need God in all that you do to succeed. Therefore, please follow God’s time table for rest. Don’t rest as you feel like or based on what you see others doing. Instead,go by “Thus said the Lord!” Let your boss know that you can’t work on the day that the Lord has set a side to be worshiped. Many of us have attempted to be smart than the Lord of the universe. How I wish we can all follow God’s simple and straight forward instructions in all that we do!

I hope that you and I have reminded ourselves some of the things that we need to pay attention to when it comes to money.

Again for you and I to succeed, let us be mindful of those things that matter most:

1.God
2.Family
3.Yourself
4.Others

I will sure try to follow this route and count on God for success. How about you!

Just a thought

PLANS ARE ON FOR TANZANIA TO EXPORT NATURAL GAS TO KENYA

Business News Analysis BY LEO ODERA OMOLO

Kenya will be the first destination for Tanzania natural gas, according to a report appearing in the influential Nairobi publication the EAST AFRICAN.

It says a company called Artumas Group Incorporation, a Mtwara-based gas exploring company has been given the go ahead by the Tanzanian government to export its products to Kenya.

It quoted a source in the Tanzanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral as saying that gas exports to Kenya will depend on whether they can satisfy local demands.

The plant at Mtwara has a capacity fro 300MW and the company recently finalized plans for motor vehicles and domestic purposes.

It further quoted the CEO of the firm Stephen W.Mason as saying that he was not in a position to comment on the company gas export plans to Kenya.

The Norwegian –listed oil and gas firm discovered a gas deposit at Mnazi Bay in Mtwara region, which has about two trillion cubic feet of proven gas deposit.

Early last year, the Tanzania government effectively licensed the Norwegian Company which is involved in the exploration of gas to generate electricity to be supplied to Lindi and Mtwara, two of the county’s underdeveloped regions.

According to a prèss statement recently released by the company, the Tanzania government has given approval to the firm to finalize negotiations with the relevant parties for the export of compressed natural gas to off-take clients in Mombasa, Kenya.

It further stated that the approval allows Artumas to move forward to conclude the relevant projects Agreements including long term gas sales agreement with the off-take customers and transportation services agreement with the compressed natural gas shipper.

In the statement Mr. Mason said the conclusion of these commercial agreements of these would underpin the current planning activity in support of commencements of the drilling programmes in fourth quarter of 2008

The CEO said, “During the past year, Artumas has worked in close cooperation and collaboration with its working interest partner, Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation and the government of Tanzania to determine the optimal use of the large gas resource base located in the Tanzania port of Ruvuma Basin.

The commercialization strategy involves balancing Tanzania’s domestic requirements with high-value export opportunities. The approval fro export compressed natural gas reflects the vision of the government of Tanzania and is further evidence of the confidence held by the government in the abilities of Artumas to execute on its recommendations.

The gas exploration at Mnazi Bay became the second facility to produce electricity from locally sourced gas. The first was gas from Songo Songo Island, which is transported to Dar Es Salaam via a pipeline to Ubungo power plant from where Songa generate power fro sale to Tanesco

Tanzania has also discovered further gas deposits at Mteranga slightly over 40km from Dar Es Salaam.

The director general of the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority Harun Masebu last year said that the Mnazi Bay gas to electricity project will generate power that is sufficient for small and medium industries in the Lindi-Mtwara region.

TANZANIA NOW SAYS UGANDA IS FREE TO ENTER NILE WATER AGREEMENTS AS KALENJIN MPs DISOWN RAILA TASK FORCE ON MAU FOREST

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo

Two ODM MPs from the South Rift have asked the Prime Minister Raila Odinga to disband the Mau Forest task force.

The legislator wants the PM to appoint an independent commission to scrutinize the intended evictions of the Mau Forest Complex

The two Mps,Zakayo Cheruiyot (Kuresoi) and Isaac Ruto (Chepalungu) said last weekend that they had no confidence in the taskforce which was recently appointed by Mr.Odinga since its members were mainly civil servants.

At least 100,000 people are expected to be evicted from the forest a head of its planned rehabilitation.

The legislators said the task force was unlikely to come out with any useful recommendations since “their appointing authority has already declared that evictions must be carried out in Mau”

The mps said they were not opposed to the relocations of Mau squatters, but called for awareness from government that those evicted would be given alternative settlement area.

They also appealed for settlers with title deeds to be compensated “Kenya has a tradition of respecting title deeds including those issued many years ago by the British colonialists government and the Mau Forest complex case should not be exception, :said Isaac Ruto

The MP said the Mau farmers should not be evicted until all due process were followed and they were consulted on the impending evictions exercise.

The destruction of Mau Forest threatens livelihoods of millions of people who depend on the rivers which originate from there.

Many of those rivers have dried up reducing the amount of waters that flowed into Lake Victoria. The impact of the forest destruction threatens millions of people who depend on the Nile River waters.

Meanwhile Tanzania has clarified that it will not interfere in nay bilateral agreement entered into by Uganda and another country on the waters of River Nile,as long as it was notified of such agreement.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Water and Irrigation Patrick Rutahanzibwa was quoted at the weekend by Newspaper reports as saying this barely a week after it was widely reported but Tanzania was furious with Uganda over the alleged secret pact it had entered into with Egypt.

The Ps said in a statement issued in Dar “the Tanzania government recognizes Uganda’s right to engage in bilateral discussions with other countries regarding any matter of interest to Uganda.

The statement further added “it is our expectation that any issues arising from bilateral discussions that one relevant to our interests will be communicated through the channels of communication that have been established within the existing cooperative organs such as the Nile Basin Initiative of the East African Community (EAC)

It had been suggested in media reports that the Tanzania government was opposed to bilateral discussions on matters relating to the Nile Basin’s water resources “that have been reportedly held between Uganda and Egypt”

Almost a fortnight ago it was reported that Tanzania was angry over an agreement entered into by Uganda and Egypt after President Hosni Mubarak made unscheduled stop over in Uganda.

It was intimated in the report that Tanzania officials believe that Uganda and Egypt made an exclusive bilateral deal during a recent visit Egyptian President.

President Mubarak made a brief stopover in Kampala on his way home from South Africa where he had gone to lobby or solicit support for Sudanese President Omar El Bashir against indictment by the indictment by the UN prosecutor over war crimes.

But PS Rutahanzibwa further said that negotiations fro new agreement on co-operation among Nile Basin countries including Tanzania were at an advanced stage.

He said the negotiations started as part of the consultative process early this year an dthat the Tanzanian Minister for Water and Irrigation Prof Monk Mwandosya recently met his Ugandan counterpart, maria Mutagamba in Dar Es Salaam.

According to the Ps Mutagamba had led adelegation which included among others Andace Mudagizaye, the then excecutive director of the Nile Basin and Sortie bank among the director of Uganda Development Department

In as much as I would want to agree with you, the Luo must look at this thing with some keenness,

Culture has never been static, and the many communities in the world have ways of doing their things. The people of Moses and Joshua had a way of doing their things as opposed to Ramogi and his people.

Before the white man came to Africa with the Bible on the left hand and the gun, yes, the gun on the right side, we had our own ways of reaching out to our Gods. The white man brain washed us to only believe that their God was the only true God to be worshiped by all.

We became converted into their ways and with that, get engrossed also into their mess. The purity with which we lived with each other got eroded and we assumed some sorts of behaviour that was alien to our fore fathers.

It is then that we started missing the track.

We discarded the Luo culture of removal of the 6 lower teeth as modern science came up with better means of managing the lock jaw disease. Other modern ways came into being. I do not contest all the modern ways that came to our advantage. But I do contest modern science that has been proved ineffective.

Examples abound, and figures do not lie, that only a small percentage of the people whose things have been cut are immune to the ravages of HIV/AIDS.

In Kenya, we have proof that having your thing cut is no panacea to HIV/AIDS. What is, is your behaviour and conduct. If you are as randy as a bull, your days on earth are as numbered, whether your thing is cut or not.

Allocation of AIDS money in Kenya also tend to be over concentrated in other regions other than Nyanza. And yet, the reverse should be the case. Why do we give bigger votes to those whose things have been cut, if the argument for the cut is that it reduces the rate of infections?

We must not engage in double standards with our lives. Being cut does not minimize HIV/AIDS. What does is faithfulness to your spouse, or remain celibate.

ODM LEADERS IN NDHIWA IRKED BY CLAIMS BY A GROUP OF DISGRUNTLED BUSH POLITICIANS THAT THEY WERE RIGGED

By Leo Odera Omolo

THE claims made by a group of disgruntled politician in
Ndhiwa constituency, Homa-Bay district claiming that they were rigged out of
ODM Party elections when the party held its grassroots elections last year has
angered party leaders in the area.

According to a report, which appeared in the current edition
of the popular and widely read CITIZEN Weekly, the group which is consisting mosr
of the perennial Ndhiwa parliamentary election losers alleged they were rigged
out of the last party election in favour of the area MP Joshua Orwa Ojode.

The truth, according to a Ndhiwa civic leader, the MP did
not contest any position in the branch elections, there could have been no way,
he {MP} was rigged in.

The group comprises perennial parliamentary election losers
in the names of Mrs Monica Amolo, Ted Odero, Neto Oyugi and Jeremiah Owiti were
beaten hands down by unknown individuals who are allied to the area MP, while
Mr. Ojode was not personally involved and did not contest any branch
elections.. The group, which has announced that its members have already ganged
together to take on Mr. Ojode, according to the civic leader who spoke on condition
of anonymity, are most welcome to come and contest any position in the branch.

The civic leader, however, wondered how the group which
consisted of a bunch of political non-entities could win the ODM branch
election in Ndhiwa while they remained holed in the streets of Nairobi.” These are well known rumour
peddlers and streets vendors in both Nairobi and
Kisumu Cities. They will find it an up-hill
task to make any major political inroads in Ndhiwa. “Ours is a rural
constituency whose residents are farmers, and these are the bulk of party
followers. But some of the group which has ganged up are mysterious characters
and conmen roaming the streets of Kisumu and Nairobi.

“We don’t have room for rumour-mongers to gain any position
of leadership in our party branch, and we shall only vote in for the credible
individual personalities who are ready to work hand in hand with our elected MP
to promote development in the area, though it is the constitutional rights of
every party members to contest any elective posts within the party, such people
or individuals must have clean track
record of active participation in the promotion of ODM activities in Ndhiwa and
elsewhere. Let them know pretty well that Ndhiwa is not the playing ground for
every Tom, Dick and Harry.with no credibility to walk in and win ODM post without having sweat for it.”

Reached for comment, Mr. Ojode whjo is an Assistant Minister
in the Office of the President in-charge of Internal Security and Provincial
Administration scoffed at his critics. He said the group wanted to use him a
punching bag, and yet he hold no position in the ODM branch in Ndhiwa. They
should direct their criticism against the right people are currently holding
positions in ODM’s branch in Ndhiwa. As for parliamentary elections, he said
there is still four more years to go, and people with parliamentary ambition
should the incumbent chances and the opportunities to serve the electorate
effectively.”When the time comes, everyone will be given an opportunity to sell
his or her policy to the electorate . But there is no point in making all the
time election times. The Wananchi needs the service delivery, but not empty
political ,slogans, said the Assistant Minister.

Ojode reminded the group of a big Harambee fund raising which
was held in Ndhiwa last month in which more than Kshs 4 million was raised. The
money will go towards the various economic and social development projects. The
Chief guest was the Land and Settlement Minister James Aggrey Orengo and the
guest of honour was the Minister for Agriculture William Ruto and the Country
Director of Marie Stope Clinics Cyprian Otieno Awiti.. None of the four big
talkers who wanted to lead ODM in Ndhiwa showed up during the Harambee and the
Assistant Minister wondered how such people wouild convince the party followers
to elect them in any position in the branch by issuing misleading and malicious
statements from the city streets.

It is imperative to note that during the last general
election Mr. Ojode polled 42,000 votes against the paltry votes of 8,000
garnered by Mrs Monica Amolo therefore the question of her being rigged out is
a matter of public conjecture. Mr Owiti and Mr. Neto while Mr. Ted Odero did not even contested
the primaries, but had turned to be a youth winger for another candidate Mr.
Dennis Orero who performesd dismally during the primaries.

If these are the
character of people who can have a gut and tell the press that they were rigged
out, then the word rigging remain a
phantom,” said Ojode.

Ndhiwa MP, however, said he would welcome anybody with the
agenda to help him built the area and making a hub of economic and agricultural
activities in the greater Southern Nyanza
region.”Let all those with development agenda come forward so that we could
work together for the mutual benefit of our people, he said.

Doctors say leg pain can signal deadly blood clot
By LAURAN NEERGAARD
AP Medical Writer
Far too many Americans are dying of dangerous blood clots that can masquerade as simple leg pain, says a major new government effort to get both patients and their doctors to recognize the emergency in time.

“It’s a silent killer. It’s hard to diagnose,” said acting Surgeon General Dr. Steven Galson, who announced the new campaign Monday. “I don’t think most people understand that this is a serious medical problem or what can be done to prevent it.”

At issue are clots with cumbersome names: A deep vein thrombosis, or DVT, forms in large veins, usually a leg or the groin. It can quickly kill if it moves up to the lungs, where it goes by the name pulmonary embolism, or PE.

These clots make headlines every few years when seemingly healthy people collapse after long airplane flights or being in similarly cramped quarters. Vice President Cheney suffered one after a long trip last year. NBC correspondent David Bloom died of one in 2003 after spending days inside a tank while covering the invasion of Iraq.

But that provides a skewed vision of the problem. While there aren’t good statistics, the new surgeon general’s campaign estimates that every year, between 350,000 and 600,000 Americans get one of these clots — and at least 100,000 of them die.

There are a host of risk factors and triggers: Recent surgery or a broken bone; a fall or car crash; pregnancy or taking birth control pills or menopause hormones; being immobile for long periods. The risk rises with age, especially over 65, and among people who smoke or are obese.

And some people have genetic conditions that cause no other symptoms but increase their risk, making it vital to tell your doctor if a relative has ever suffered a blood clot.

People with those factors should have “a very low threshold” for calling a doctor or even going to the emergency room if they have symptoms of a clot, said Galson, who issued a “call to action” for better education of both consumers and doctors, plus more research.

Symptoms include swelling; pain, especially in the calf; or a warm spot or red or discolored skin on the leg; shortness of breath or pain when breathing deeply.

But here’s the rub: Doctors are ill-informed, too. For example, studies suggest a third of patients who need protective blood thinners when they enter the hospital for major surgery don’t get them. And patients can even be turned away despite telltale symptoms, like happened to Le Keisha Ruffin just weeks after the birth of her daughter, Caitlyn.

Ruffin made repeated visits to doctors and emergency rooms for growing pain in her leg and groin in December 2003 and January 2004, but was told it must be her healing Caesarean section scar.

Finally one night, Ruffin’s husband ran her a really hot bath for pain relief — only to have her climb out minutes later with her leg swollen three to four times its normal size, and then pass out.

“I like to call that my miracle bath,” Ruffin said, because the sudden swelling proved the tip-off for doctors.

Pieces of a giant clot in her right leg had broken off and floated to her lung. The ER doctor “said if I hadn’t made it in when I did, I may not have lived through the rest of the night,” recalled Ruffin, now 32, who spent a month in the hospital and required extensive physical therapy to walk normally again.

These clots “tend to fall through the cracks” because they cross so many areas of medicine, said Dr. Samuel Goldhaber, chairman of the Venous Disease Coalition and a cardiologist at Boston’s Brigham & Women’s Hospital.

With the surgeon general’s campaign, “DVT after all these years will finally get the national spotlight like cigarette smoking did in the mid-60s,” he said.

In addition to Galson’s report:

_The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is issuing a 12-page booklet to help consumers tell if they’re at risk for DVTs and what to do — and a 60-page DVT treatment-and-prevention guide for doctors and hospitals.

_As a prevention incentive, starting Oct. 1 Medicare will withhold payment from hospitals when patients develop the clots after knee- or hip-replacement surgery.

PM acts on thorny ‘cut’ issue
Updated on: Sunday, September 14, 2008
Story by: By FREDRICK ODIERO and

Prime Minister Raila Odinga has announced a major consultative forum in Nyanza to deliberate on the controversial male circumcision that has been recommended by experts as a means of reducing HIV infection. The meeting in two weeks time in Kisumu to discuss the controversial male circumcision in Luo Nyanza will involve all the stakeholders. Raila said the meeting will be attended by the Council of Elders, youths and medical experts to deliberate on the issue.

He said the medical experts will present the scientific evidence that a male circumcised is less prone to attracting HIV/Aids. He said the issue has been blown out of proportion for no apparent reason noting that the meeting will come up with a way forward. Speaking in Nyakach Constituency during their cultural festival, Raila however said the exercise is voluntary and nobody will be forced to face the cut. He said people who are forcing others to go for the cut will be arrested.

Raila told the Luo community that culture is not static but dynamic and urged the community to retain good culture but discard detrimental ones. Meanwhile, the PM has reiterated that teachers must sign performance contracts for effectiveness. Raila said teachers are just like other workers in the country who have signed the performance contact. He said teachers will not be intimidated and urged them to embrace performance contracting.

He said promotion of teachers will be pegged on their performance. Speaking in Nyakach during a cultural festival, Raila warned students violence in schools. He urged teachers to dialogue with students to prevent cases of unrest that have rocked most schools in the country of late. Meanwhile, Raila was yesterday asked to allow democracy to prevail in the Orange Democratic Movement by letting the pro-Grand Coalition Opposition government by crusaders champion their cause.

My position on the cut for the Luo has been very clear.

We have lived all along with insults, insults that made The Right Hon Raila be a subject of political insults that the Luo, being un cut, cannot lead Kenya.

We destroyed this mith last year when Kenya voted in Hon Raila as our next president only for those people to steal our victory.

It was hence an insult to the Luo for Hon Raila to propose the same issue that has been a subject of public ridicule to the Luo. As much as we know the culture is never static, the question of circumcission should remain a medical concern to each and every person.

By making it a Luo concern, we are opening ourselves to more public ridicule.

Scientific eveidence in Kenya on the death toll related to HIV/AIDS proves that many more people in Central Kenya have died of the virus than the Luo on Nyanza. When it comes to allocation of financial resources to combat the dreaded desease, Central Kenya has always been allocated the biggest share.

Why could this be so if AIDS only kils thos not cut?

I am prepared to attend and present a petition on behalf of all those progressive forces that will present the case of circumsission being an optional individual initiative rather than an issue being brought upon the Luo as a mater of new culture.

Judy & All Interested Parties,

My 10th great grandfather Ragem, indicates that he might have underrated this circumcision issue. Indeed, the Luo have always been united as a community. That which united us as a people is the same as that which united the Israelites, the Arabs, the Zulu, the Americans and others. Yet it may not be the issue of circumcision alone, because the Luhya, the Kisii, the Mijikenda all circumcise but are not united as a people as we were.

My point is that this issue of circumcision will for the first time ever, divide the Luo needlessly. Pitched on one side, I see the static, straight-jacketed, pro ‘Maintain Status Quo’ Luos. Lets call this group the conservative fundamentalists because they are anti-circumcision idea even for the individual Luos who may want to consider it. On the other side, are the dynamic, flexible, anti-onagi Luos. Lets call this group the liberated democrats because they may not necessarily be for the circumcision idea, but leave it up to the individual family to decide.

My 10th great grandfather Ragem, states: ‘Behold, you did not see Brutus stub Julius, you did not see jolang’o spear the shadow that ended the life of thuon, ratego Luanda Magere. You did not see Oyamo defeat Gor’s bilo, and thus kill Gor Mahia, min jobilo duto. Now I ask you, do you see the machete that is being wielded to be planted on your leaders’ back?”

Therefore I, not my 10th proclaim, Ok unyal! Lets tread softly our daughter, if we rise too early, the dew of life, (read thoo) will soak our feet. Let us not use the names of others to indicate they are on the side of conservative fundamentalists against their own will. some of us contribute greatly to these ommunity organizers. Should we now stop because they are being partisan? Are you saying they are with us only because they are not against us? Whilst, let the laugh of the anti-Onagi sound louder and last the longest. And please, let us not be guided or held back niwach chweko, choke!

My 10th great grandfather Ragem, predicts that after Raila, the Luo will be divided and scattered for 40 years. He also predicts that this will be the end of the jinx that causes leadership eluding the Luo, because Luo strength as a unit is a myth. A Luo will be a stronger leader only inside Jomua. If the next  president is a Luo, he will get more votes elsewhere  and less votes in Luoland, compared to all other  elections. The conservative vs liberal divide is the onset of this structure. What is not clear is who the  new leaders are. Do not be fooled, those outspoken are just patsies. Follow the leaders.

Meanwhile, to all the progressive Luos who are willing to circumcise, you will lose your skin, and a little sensitivity, but that is all. The mangrove tree dwells in the river, but that does not change it into a crocodile. Dead or alive, you will still be Luo, and yes, will still be loved.

To Ya All,
There is no science involved in cutting out the foreskin of a Penis. Neither is there science that Kenyans are dying en mass out of ignorance on failing to face the issue of primary cause of the spread of the HIV virus, which is SEX.

In this modern day world where people still hide behind ignorance and end up finding a thousand and one excuses as to what is ailing them, other than the HIV virus, and while they still engage in sex with multiple sex partners, trying to prove the “African Manhood” (the stronger or the powerful one is he who can sleep with as many beautiful women as his money can afford him) we are  still in for a very long journey. We already know damn too well that in every five women or men one must be carrying a “MDUDU” or has developed it. So why would an individual still be engaged in this “Sports Sex”, knowing damned too well that, by the time he /she runs through  the fifth woman/Man he/she will have been exposed to MDUDU.
As long as we do not change our mindset, then MDUDU is still going to keep sending our men/women to the grave just as propshesied in the book. Deuteronomy 28:20. You shall be rebuked by the father and he shall curse you with desease to ravage you to the grave. Luke 18:20 tells you that you know the commandments. Follow them. It is what wil save you from the wrath of Yah-weh

My take is that the most important thing that we need, is education and or awareness of these circumstances. Stupid habits must go.
Secondly Culture is not stagnant and those Jaluo “Kers” must be amending some of these cultures to be in tandem with the present day life.

As for those who are ignorant and still do not understand the Genesis of Circumcision and “TERO MON”, I would urge you to turn to the Holy Book, which is the History of the Black Man for thousands of Years. I also ask them to tell me Why a JALUO would still practise TERO MON as was commanded in the Bible, but yet refuse to Circumsise as the laws given to Moshe our forefather by Nyasaye otherwords called Yah-weh at got Sinai?

If you are in doubt, then right to me so that I can quote to you the Books and phrases where these are written in the Bible.

Jairus

You are not making sense. Are you cut? And the fact that you worship a white God who demands more tithes that ministry to the soul doesn’t amaze me. We are not stupid and the fact that only 25% of the world population is circumcised seems not make sense to you.

If circumcision was the panacea you know that Swaziland could be having the lowest HIV figures. Tanzania could not be having more Waha, Kuria and Nyamwezi infected more than anybody else. Lets not argue like some semi literate buffoons. If you feel ashamed that your tribe is being chided with circumcision, kill yourself.

Re: A very touching story indeed! God, please come closer to this family!

By Vincent Bartoo

When Mark Kipyego Sugut, 32, sent his relatives to represent him in dowry negotiations, nothing had prepared him for tragedy.

Sugut asked his mother, Milka Chesumei, to lead an engagement party of nine to Mihu, Bungoma District, to seek fiancÈe, Diana Khaira’s hand in marriage.

Sugut, who is from a humble family, stayed home, as the dowry costs would have been higher if he was present during the negotiations.

“According to the customs of my fiancÈe’s Tachoni community, I would have been compelled to give more in dowry if I was there,” he said.

The customs, however, allow relatives to represent the suitor.
Mr Mark Sugut with his relatives at his mother’s grave.

PHOTOS: PETER OCHIENG

It was Tuesday, September 2, when Sugut’s mother, his brother, Daniel Kogo and his wife, Rosebella, and two sisters, Salina Tuwei and Rael Chepkemoi, prepared for the big day. They were joined by Sugut’s five neighbours whose assistance Sugut had sought to help the family in the dowry negotiations.

“Since we did not have money to hire a vehicle, we escorted them to the main Eldoret-Webuye highway to board a bus to Bungoma,” said Sugut.

Sugut and his younger sister, Hellen Rotich, stayed home praying for good news of fruitful negotiations between the two families.

“I communicated with them on their mobile phones, to find out if they had arrived well and on time,” says Sugut.

The engagement party arrived safely at Mihu and got down to the business of the day.

We have a wife

“I called again at about 2pm and my mother told me they were concluding the talks,” he says.

He went on: “At 5pm, I called again and my mother was so overjoyed. She told me they had found a wife for me. I was so happy.”

Because it was late, Sugut’s in-laws asked two of their family members to escort the engagement party back home.

“When they got to Webuye, they called me to say there were no buses heading to Eldoret as it was late,” says Sugut.

But the 11 members of the engagement party caught the eye of a matatu crew, which offered to transport them although they had concluded the day’s business.

They boarded the vehicle and called Sugut to say they had been lucky to get a matatu.

“They asked us to meet them at a junction on the Webuye-Eldoret highway since they would arrive around 8pm,” says Sugut.

Sugut and his sister, Hellen, waited in vain for the party and at 8pm, they got apprehensive and decided to call.

After making frantic calls without response, Sugut started suspecting something was amiss.

“I informed families of the neighbours who had accompanied my family,” he said.

They would, however, receive a chilling telephone call from a Good Samaritan who broke the distressing news that the engagement party had been involved in a serious accident.

voice of the caller

“I was shocked. My knees weakened and I almost collapsed,” says a distraught Sugut who pauses as if hearing the voice of the caller being replayed.

Accompanied by his uncles, Sugut hitched a ride to the accident spot.

“I did not know what to expect. I was anxious and at the same time afraid of what lay ahead,” he said.

But on arrival, Sugut and his uncles were met with the devastating reality that only his sister, Rael, had survived the accident.

The accident occurred near Kaburengu trading centre, a few kilometres from Webuye town.

Bungoma OCPD Maurice Matano blamed a stalled tractor, which had been abandoned on the road, for the accident.

The public transport vehicle Sugut’s relatives were travelling in, tried to avoid hitting the stationery tractor before it collided head on with an oncoming matatu.

With tears filling his eyes, Sugut painfully says he is yet to come to terms with the tragedy that befell him on a day he was supposed to be celebrating.
The driver of the tractor, the OCPD said, did not put any sign on the road to warn other motorists of a stalled vehicle ahead.

Matano also said the two matatus involved in the accident could have been over speeding judging from the mangled wreckage of the vehicles.

He said five men and eight women died on the spot. Two other victims, a man and a woman, died as doctors at the Webuye hospital attended to them.

With tears filling his eyes, Sugut painfully says he is yet to come to terms with the tragedy that befell him on a day he was supposed to be celebrating.

“I have lost my mother who was the sole bread winner of the family. My brother and his wife who perished have also left orphans,” he said.

Fresh grave

Sugut also said that following the tragedy; his fiancÈe went into shock and was rushed to Lugulu Mission Hospital in Bungoma.

“It has been a trying time for me, making arrangements to bury those who perished and at the same time taking care of those in hospital,” he says.

The family, however, is grateful for the assistance by Mosop MP David Koech and Nandi North DC Fredrick Ndambuki, who came to their aid.

“The two organised a harambee that raised Sh400,000 and provided us with transport and food for the mourners,” Sugut says.

Staring at his mother’s fresh grave, he adds: “Without their support, we would not have been able to foot the funeral expenses.”

Karl Rove: McCain went ‘too far’

Obama for America

Hello:

Make a donation and double your impact

Even Karl Rove had to admit yesterday that the McCain campaign’s lies and
negative attacks have gone “too far.”

John McCain is running the most negative and dishonest campaign in modern
presidential history. He has demonstrated that he’d rather lose his integrity
than lose this election.

It’s right out of the Bush-Rove playbook. Unfortunately, as Karl Rove knows
better than anyone, these shameful tactics have worked in the past.

This year, we can’t let that happen.

Our goal is to bring 50,000 new donors into our movement by Friday at midnight.

And if you make your first online donation today, your gift will go twice
as far. A previous donor has promised to match every dollar you donate.

Double your impact right now. Your matched donation of $5 will become $10
if you donate today:

https://donate.barackobama.com/double6

The culture of corruption and dishonesty that has hurt America so badly the
last eight years is playing an even larger role in McCain’s campaign.

Just this past week, John McCain hired a Washington super-lobbyist to fill
positions in a potential McCain-Palin White House. At least 177 lobbyists
have been on McCain’s campaign staff, and apparently he hopes to run the
White House the same way.

Also this week, the McCain campaign continued to repeat a number of outrageous
lies, even after watchdogs in the media called them “shamelessly misleading,”
“thoroughly dishonest,” and “a toxic mix of lies and double-speak.”

They also lied about the crowd size at one of their rallies — reporting
23,000 attendees when there were only 8,000.

McCain’s campaign — run on lobbyists and lies — is no match for this unprecedented
grassroots movement. More than 2,500,000 people have stepped up to own a
piece of this campaign.

But if we want change, we must continue to grow this movement and put an
end to these dishonorable political tactics. And we have just 50 days left
to do it.

Right now, a previous donor — an ordinary person just like you — has promised
to match your donation if you step up today.

Double your impact to combat McCain’s dishonest campaign tactics — make
a matched donation of $5 or more today:

Folks,

To call for a consultative meeting for circumcision discussion was not necessary just too much for Luos, a slap on the face. Leaders should not stoop too low. This is how leaders loose trust and faith with their supporters.

I wish this effort and the available funds would be translated to fighting hunger campaign to reduce and eradicate state of abject poverty in the midst of Nyanzan community. Start small packaging industries for dried fruits and snacks, honey, vegetables, water and other minerals for overseas export market where there is a ready market for natural organic non toxic foods with an opening for huge supply to meet surging demands. This will provide an immediate job creation for the jobless members of the community in a short period of time.

Leaders too, especially the MPs should mobilize and utilize the readily available Constituency Development Funds to organize District project programs for job creation and project implementation as a start-up pilot scheme to improve lives of their constituents, and develop stimulative structures for investments to boost economic future prospects.

Political Leaders should form Official Working Team elected from District Level. This does not need central Governments intervention. There is no time to waste in petty unproductive and unwarranted costly meetings like that of the “Consultative Meeting for Circumcision of Luos”.

Old Fashioned or Not, Luo men have kept themselves whole over the years – a state which in decades have made woman feel satisfied and complete in their partnership with their male counterparts. We dont want to create situation avenue for homosexualism and lesbianism by destroying the perfect linkage bond and commitment of God’s purpose for creation between a man and a woman in the lasting institution of marriage. Lets focus on a much bigger picture of Peoples-Driven Demands.

With the coming call, we suspect witch hunting, we see a situation where Nyanza People are going to be Up-For-Grubs in a chase hunt with Power Agents messengers. Could there be a deal (some of us don’t know) of some sort of lucrative business of selling the blood of Nyanza Community or possible human organs? Good People, Don’t be fooled and Don’t let that happen. This call is provocative. If the meeting must take place, let people attend and may the leaders of Nyanza as a whole divert course and utilize the called meeting to boost for their advantages as well as those of their electorates. Let it be a win win situation forum people……….that which will generate peaceful happy dialogue to evade conflict and confrontation – a conducive environment for the target messenger. Its tricky, don’t give in to mouse trap.

I love you all.

PM acts on thorny ‘cut’ issue
Updated on: Sunday, September 14, 2008
Story by: By FREDRICK ODIERO and
…………….

A section of leaders from Kisii led by Dr Rashid Minyonga told party Members of Parliament championing for the formation of the opposition in Parliament not to be cowed by Raila’s stand because many Kenyans were behind them. Dr Minyonga said the days of party dictatorship were long gone. He urged Raila to support democracy because he, too, made his career in the opposition benches.

Speaking to reporters in Kisii town, Dr Minyonga said opposition in Parliament was crucial for the sake of checks and balances and anybody out to oppose this would be treated as an enemy of the common man. Dr Minyonga who contested the South Mugirango Parliamentary seat but lost to Omingo Magara accused those opposed to the formation of opposition in Parliament of trying to take the country back to the era of one party state in the process reverse the democratic gains made so far. Meanwhile, Dr Minyonga has dismissed those criticizing Constitutional and Justice Minister Martha Karua over her declaration that she would seek the Presidency in 2012 He defended Karua saying that she was within her democratic right to declare her candidature for the top seat in the next election.

Senior security officials are said to be scared after Waki Commission ordered for files of those who were arrested to be brought to the commission.

Meanwhile, Kalonzo is in trouble after a secret deal they stroke with Kibaki two weeks prior to general election to help him retain power was revealed. Grace Kaindi – former Nyanza PPO (to deal with Raila and ODM hardcore supporters- shoot-to-kill order)

Police have searched a home, church and business premises associated with a bishop being investigated for killings in Naivasha.

The officers were looking for clues to support a testimony by the man accused of raping, killing and drinking blood of his female victims.

According to a statement recorded by detectives, the blood thirsty killer had on several occasions delivered human blood to the cleric’s house. This prompted the search, which, however, failed to yield any evidence.

Police forensic experts conducted the searches at the bishop’s residence at Unity Farm Estate in Naivasha Town. They also visited a bookshop, church and curio shop in the town.

The detectives recorded the key suspect’s testimony on video besides a written one taken last week.

The bishop’s statement was also recorded by police Monday, four days after he was locked up at the Naivasha District police headquarters.

Sources close to the investigation told the Nation the bishop denied any involvement in the bizarre killings unearthed barely two weeks ago.

The body of a girl was found buried in a shallow grave in the key suspect’s house in Kihoto slums.

Cult saga

A police source told the Nation that the cleric spent the better part of Monday being questioned by the investigators.

“The bishop has already recorded a statement in connection with the suspected cult saga,” said the source.

The bishop was picked up by police five days ago after the suspected killer rapist brought officers to his church claiming he supplied human blood there.

On Saturday, forensic and diagnostic experts video-recorded a statement from the suspected killer.

Area deputy head of police Paul Kisang said they had also recorded statements from the two women who were allegedly raped and tortured by the suspect.

The two are recuperating at Nairobi Women’s Hospital.

He said the suspect, who was arrested more than 10 days ago, would soon be arraigned in court.

Teenager’s body

A police pathologist is set to conduct a postmortem examination on the teenager’s body Wednesday after relatives positively identified it at Naivasha District Hospital mortuary on Saturday.

Meanwhile, fearing a backlash from the public, some of the streetboys have abandoned their ruffian ways. Most of them are donning new attire and spotting neat clothes, making it difficult to spot them.

Naivasha teacher: ‘People are killing each other’

Antony, 35, is a secondary school teacher in the Kenyan Rift Valley town of Naivasha. He describes what he witnessed and heard during the weekend’s violence.

I can see smoke rising above the town and that means that houses are burning.

Earlier, I went round some of Sunday’s scenes of violence. Police were trying to disperse all the people that were gathering by firing gunshots but no-one was taking any notice of the police.

People are not scared by the gunshots.

We are just awaiting what will erupt next.

Everything here has been broken up by all the tribal clashes.

We had been living together all this time before, we had peace, we worked together.

Hide-and-seek

Resident of Naivasha started fleeing the town on Sunday

Now it is kind of as if people are trying to chase away one another.
My feelings are that if God doesn’t intervene we will continue to have problems.

Yesterday the clashes took up the better part of the day.

The situation was like this: people would attack a certain area and then when the police came running to the rescue, then another group would go to a different area – on and on and on, over and over – it was like a cat and mouse game whereby when the police took a group to safety, then another group would move on somewhere else and start attacking until the police managed to get to the new location of violence.

It was hide-and-seek.

Killing

Those attacking were mostly from the Kikuyu community because they were very angry about what happened in Eldoret – they thought it was time that the Luo and Kalenjin in Naivasha tasted what their relatives had had too.

People running up and down, police shooting and throwing canisters, burning of houses, people being killed, people killing one another.

I saw all this.

But before they got out of the house, they met a crowd waiting for them

More eyewitness accounts

People were running after other people’s lives.

The plot where my mother lives was burnt down yesterday.

Not her house.

Terrible sight

But a house burnt down where mostly Luos were camping.

Naivasha’s roads are filled with makeshift roadblocks

They had wanted to leave the house and run away but before they left they wanted to burn their belongings so looters could not have the opportunity to take their things but before they got out of the house, they met a crowd waiting for them. So they decided to lock the door inside and they then got burnt alive.
It was a very, very, terrible sight. I witnessed it.

I am Kikuyu but am not getting involved. I am a school teacher and my responsibility is to keep the calm – my students at our boarding school are all combined from different ethnic groups and so I must ensure security.

Between my students, there is no animosity. I thank God for this.

Before dark came yesterday, the military had grouped with police. They all ganged up and were patrolling around the town.

Commotion

Police have been escorting people at risk out of Naivasha

But still, the violence did not end then.

It was drizzling around 1900 local time (1600 GMT) so people went into their houses to get out of the rain. Likewise the police and military went back to barracks.

But after the rain I could hear gunshots and during the night, I heard a lot of whistling and people calling one another and then gunshots and ululations and people shouting for help.

This was in the early hours of the morning – around 0330 local time.

In the commotion, I was told that police arrested many men who they believed to be involved.

And most of them are still in police custody.

PM acts on thorny ‘cut’ issue
Updated on: Sunday, September 14, 2008

ANTI-ODM HATE MESSAGES AND LEAFLETS HIT THE GROUND IN BOMET AND SOTIK CONSTITUENCIES AHYEA OF THE BY-ELECTIONS AS THE AUTHORS TARGET RAILA AND PARTY CANDIDATES

By Leo Odera Omolo In Kericho Town

TEXT containing hate messages warning members of the Kipsigis to be aware of the Prime Minister Raila Odinga political machinations and manoeuvres have hit the streets in both Bomet and Sotik towns.

The authors of the short messages {SMS} seemed to be targeting voters not to vote for any parliamentary aspirant sponsored by the ODM as the campaign heightened in the two constituencies where the voters will go to the polls station on September 25.

The two parliamentary by-elections comes in the wake of serious disagreement between the ODM leadership and the MPs representing various constituencies in Kalenjin region over the impending eviction of thousands of communities currently squatting in the controversial Mau Forest Complex, which covers part of the newly created Molo, Narok and Kericho districts.

The voters will go to the polls on the morning of September 25 to elect two new MPs to replace the late Donald Kiprono Kipkalya Kones, the former Roads Minister who at the time of his death was the ODM MP for Bomet. And also to vote for a replacement of Ms Lorna Laboso who was an Assistant Minister in the Office of the Vice President and Ministry of Home Affairs.

The two perished in a grisly aircraft accident in Narok on June 10, when the light plane they were flying in was brought down and crashed in bad weather.

So far a total of 20 parliamentary hopefuls have come forward, and were duly nominated by two Returning Officers posted to the region by the Electoral Commission of Kenya{ECK}’

He hate SMS message were similar to those which fuelled the post-election violence early this year. But this time around the hate message are focused on the impending by-elections, the forthcoming government plan to relocate thousands of illegal squatters in Mau Forest, the majority of who are believed to be members of the Kipsigis community.

An SMS from an unidentified cellphone began circulating and reached many phone users in the middle of last week. It warned Kalenjin MPs against being compromised and accepting the government plan to relocate communities from the Mau Forest.

It purported to be coming from the popular Kalenjin vernacular Kass FDM station, and warns the Kalenjin MPs of the serious consequences of being haunted. It scathingly criticized the Prime Minister Raila Odinga for supporting the government eviction plan in the Mau Forest.

The management of the Kass FM station, however, immediately disowned the hate messages and dismissed them as the work of people with malice intentions. The station, said it has already broadcast a tentative message to its listeners advising them to ignore these messages.

A director of the popular Kalenjin station Mr. Phillip Meli was quoted by the newspaper columns ealier in the week as saying that the police had also been alerted and were already actively investigating the source of the hate mesdsages.

Another Nairobi daily, THE STAR, had quoted the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Dr. Bitange Ndemo who confirmed that the Ministry was working with the police in a concerted effort tom track down the culprits.

There is a police team that is helping the Ministry on that and they can easily track the authors,” said the PS

The authors of the hate text message, according to the PS, have, however devised a way of concealing their phone identity and that of the organization they are representing only to send the hate message to a multitude of phone users in the country.

But some of the level minded Kalenjin leaders interviewed expressed fear that such mischievous hate message could easily spark off another round of communal hatred and violence, wanted the government to institute a thorough investigations to unearth the motive behind such uncalled for activities which could easily undermined the prevailing peace and tranquility in the country.

A number of the Kalenjin MPs, particularly those from the Kipsigis region have confirmed having received the text. One of them is the outspoken Chepalungu ODM MP Isaac Ruto , who of lately has been in the forefront in opposing Mau Forest eviction. He said he was aware of the text, but described then as the work of a few malicious individuals.

“ have not received it myself, but there is someone who gave me the message. I tried to call back the number, but there was no reply,” said the MP.

Many residents of both Bomet and Sotik constituencies are said to have received the hate text messages advising them not to vote for the ODM nominees, but only to choose the individuals among the men and women contesting the byt-elections on their merit and personality cult and to go with those of high integrity and political dynamism.

One Kericho politician accused the ODM of resorting to women as its candidates, and yet the woman are weak and cannot withstand the heat of Kenya politics, especially in the future.

The future of politics in this country would be sailing in a very rough terrain and need only brave men to withstand the heat, but not women, said the Kericho politician Kipkemoi Arap Kettienya, adding that there is something wrong with the ODM and wondered why the party was only interested in weak candidates in the Kipsigis region.

)On the ground the camnpaign in both Bomet and Sotik expected to be on top gear this week with the expected tour of the region by party bigwigs to drum up the support of their candidates.

ODM top brass officials are expected, while the leaders of UDM and KANU are also expected to be on the ground as the campaign reached its top gear. It was, however made clear as to whether the besieged KANU national chairman Mr.Uhuru Kenyatta would also make an appearance to boost the candidature of his party. KANU .

The party of independence has sponsored one candidate for each of the two constituencies, the most prominent by Nick Salat, who is reported to be doing extremely well against the populist Mrs Kones in Bomet. It has Mrs Eunice Kirui in Sotik.

ODM’s Secretary General Prof. Anyang’ Nyong”o and other party luminaries are expected to pitch camps in the region in the coming week. It is still not yet known whether the Prime Minister would also join the ODM campaign team. But taking into account the high profile campaign which is taking place one can only expect Raila Odinga to be on a visiting card.

Part of the UDM campaign team led by the Mzee Nathaniel Chebelyon are already on the ground in Sotik. The party leader Lt. Gen{rtd}John Koech and the Secretary General Francis Ole Kamwaro are expected in both Bomet and Sotik this week.

UDM candidate Brigadier {rtd}Alexander Sitienei is reported to have already taken an early lead against ODM’s Dr. Joyce Laboso, the elder sister of the late Lorna Laboso.

Brig. Sitienei campaign team are exploiting the fact that Dr. Laboso is married to a Luo man and therefore belonged to that community and as such cannot come back to reclaim political leadership in Kiposigis land.

Mwatela¢s transfer angers legislators
Updated on: Friday, September 12, 2008
Story by: Philip Mulee
…….
THE controversy kicked off by erstwhile Central Bank Deputy Governor Jacinta Mwatela who declined a promotion as Permanent Secretary, yesterday sucked in the chairman of the powerful Public Accounts Committee and a cross section of MPs. The legislators threatened to sponsor a censure motion against the Government if the promotion is not revoked. The MPs and the House Committee claimed that Mwatela was being victimised because of alleged information she has on the De La Rue currency printing deal and other “underhand dealings” at the CBK.

Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chairman Bonny Khalwale and Coast Province legislators, in separate media briefings yesterday termed Mwatela¢s promotion to Permanent Secretary status as “a total contravention of the law”. The Coast MPs argued on the hypothesis that if CBK Governor Prof… Njuguna Ndung¢u were to be fired over his involvement in the Grand Regency saga, Mrs. Mwatela will be next in line and “therefore removing her now appears to be calculated to deny her something which she deserves.”

And yesterday, Mwatela insisted that she did not defy anybody, but was only requesting for everything to be formalised.”I am not defying anybody at all. I am only insisting that they give me a formal letter about the transfer so that I can see the reasons behind the move, evaluate it legally, before making my final decision known,” Mwatela told Kenya Times on telephone. She reported to her former office in the morning and left at around 2 pm for a meeting outside the CBK. She maintained that she would remain in office until her request was met.

PAC chairman Dr. Khalwale and Coast Parliamentary Group chairman Bennedict Fondo Gundu, in separate press conferences at Parliament Buildings, supported the decision Mwatela had taken not to leave office.”The purported promotion of the Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Kenya was in total contravention of the law.”The Governor and his Deputy at Central Bank enjoy security of tenure of office and can only be replaced if they die, they resign, they are incapacitated or are adjudged bankrupt,” said Khalwale in a statement he read to reporters.

The same law, he pointed out, allows the President to remove the Governor and his deputy in spite of security of tenure – but only through a tribunal.Probed by journalists on what action he would take if Mwatela is removed from office, Khalwale said: “We are speaking as the institution of Parliament, and the House has powers to censure if the government does not reverse the transfer.”Dr., Khalwale said Mwatela — as CBK Deputy Governor and chairman of the CBK Tender Committee– is the custodian of vital information that his committee would want her to “personally, directly and without intimidation deliver” in respect of among others De La Rue tender for printing new generation currency notes that was the subject of motion of no confidence in former Finance Minister Amos Kimunya.

Khalwale said Mwatela should not be victmised for promoting transparency and efficiency in the House. He said PAC would very soon launch a probe into the De La Rue currency printing deal.Dr. Khalwale last July spearheaded a censure motion against former Finance Minister Amos Kimunya following the latter¢s role in the controversial sale of the Grand Regency hotel to the Libyan government. The luxury hotel was sold at Sh.2.9 billion.Khalwale, supporting Mwatela¢s stand to remain in office, wondered why Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Ambassador Francis Muthaura had not sent her a letter to effect the transfer.

Dr. Khalwale was accompanied yesterday by MPs Elias Mbau, John Mbadi, and Charles Onyancha. Coast MPs included Dan Mwanzu and Hassan Joho. The fresh threat of a censure motion against the government emerged as confusion continued to reign at the Central Bank of Kenya after Mwatela declined to leave her office insisting on a formal letter and reasons for her removal.Mwatela refused to make way for her successor, former Medical Services Permanent Secretary Dr. Hezron Nyangito, forcing CBK¢s management to hurriedly create a new office for him. Dr. Nyangito had reported to his new office on Tuesday just to find his new work station not vacant as he had expected.

“Although the appointing authority may have powers to make any changes, such changes must, however, be done humanely and within the confines of the law,” a defiant Mwatela was quoted yesterday by Kenya Times.A source at the Bank had intimated to Kenya Times that Mrs. Mwatela arrived at her office at around 7 in the morning as usual and was held up in closed-door meetings in her office for the better part of the day. And clearly indicating that she may not take up her new job, Mwatela further added: “Other than reading in the Press, I have not received any formal communication from the Government as should be the case. I am even yet to be told reasons for my transfer,” she said.

At the press conference by Coast MPs spokesman Fondo–who was flanked by four MPs–accused the government of marginalising people from the region. The MPs, who thanked President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the renewed effort of reforming the process of delivery of services by the government to the public, however, cautioned that the changes should keep with provisions of the law.”Changes made by the ministers and which have raised eyebrows including those at NSSF equally concern us”, they said.

Mwatela was among two new Permanent Secretaries appointed by President Kibaki in Monday¢s late afternoon shuffle. She was appointed the PS for Development of Northern Kenya and other Arid Lands. A senior official in the Office of the President Mohamed wa Mwachai was also appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife.

Get the conversation back on track

Obama for America

Hello:

Talk to undecided voters in your community

There’s so much at stake in this election — fixing our economy, solving
the energy crisis, dealing with climate change, and restoring America’s
position in the world.

You and I know that. But John McCain is trying to distract voters from
the real issues. And he’s willing to take the low road by making cheap personal
attacks and lying outright about Barack and his record.

It’s up to each of us to talk to voters across the country and make sure
they know what this election is really about — especially in a battleground
state like yours.

We have an exciting new tool called Neighbor to Neighbor that makes it
easy to talk to potential supporters in your community about Barack and
the issues that matter.

Help get the conversation back on track today by knocking on doors or making
phone calls:

http://my.barackobama.com/n2n

Nothing is more powerful than having undecided voters hear from ordinary
people. And right now, that’s needed more than ever.

No prior experience is required. Neighbor to Neighbor gives you a list
of potential supporters, suggested topics to talk about, and an easy way
to report back on who you’ve contacted.

With less than eight weeks until Election Day, we can’t allow voters to
lose focus on the big issues and get swept up by the smears and lies coming
out of the McCain campaign.

Reach out to fellow voters now and grow this movement for change:

Re: the challenges that come withmoney part 3

Contrally to what some spouses think/believe,joint account is far from being one of the indicators of a united family. If anything, some couples agree unwillingly to the idea of opening a joint account and spend more time being against it than enjoying it! Here is why!

1.Some see the idea of joint account as away of controlling funds by one spouse
2.Some spouses seem to benefit more than the other ones.
3.Some spouses have no direct access to the joint account
4.some spouses are not honest and trustworthy in handling the funds in the joint account

So then what’s the solution?

1.It depends from one family to another. If a joint account works for your family, then go for it.
2.Assuming there is misunderstanding and mistrust, then in addition to the joint account, let each spouse open his/her own account
3.Once you have come up with a budget which among other things allocates funds to each one for personal use, avoid monitoring how the other spouse spends his/her part of the money.

One thing you don’t want to do, is to force the idea on your spouse. Experience shows that after some time, spouses rebel and rebel in a big way.

Next time,I will write on how to make the money that un doubtly has caused pain and stress in many homes! Will you come along?

Just a thought!

December 24th 2008- KCDN

On Wednesday December 24th 2008 at 10am, we will be presenting some 250 orphans and vulnerable children with Text Books, Exercise Books, Uniforms and Shoes for their schooling in the New Year at our offices in Komarock.

These children are drawn from 7 schools within Embakasi Division and are from across Kenya and we intend this presentation to lift up their spirits as they enjoy their Christmas looking ahead to the New Year.

To make this event a success, we are inviting your support. This support can be channeled through Komarocks Community Development Network, Text Book Centre Ltd and/or Uniform Distributors Ltd. If you are willing to be our partner in this, kindly get in touch with the undersigned. We will accept your support with thanks.

The idea was born out of the ravages of conflict that we witnessed at the beginning of the year when we saw men at war and the repercussion it had on children. We witnessed first hand how vulnerable children were affected at such times and it made us at KCDN to pitch a case for them.

In inviting your support, we are also willing to receive used items that are still in good conditions that we can help give out to those in dire need.

Your support will make one child have access to an education which s/he would otherwise have missed out on. In the new spirit of National Healing and Reconciliation, let us share the little we have with the children who have nothing at all.

At the end of it all, we will publicly acknowledge all the support that we received.

Your support could be their best hope.

Yours faithfully,

Re:The many challenges that come with money Part 2

So, who is/where is the problem? Is money the problem or the people?

Money is not the problem! We are the problem! How come? Instead of learning how to manage/control money, we have chosen to let money control us! Here is how!

Ideally, our priorities are supposed to be as follows:

1.God
2.Family
3.Others
4.Money

Instead, we have it the other way! In most cases, many of us follow this pattern:

1.Money
2.Others
3.Family
4.God

It’s about time we get our priorities straight. Let us learn how to manage/control money. Each family need to come up with their own version of the budget. As you make your budget, remember the following.

1.Tithes and offerings-If you plan to succeed, then honor the owner first
2.Food-Avoid the temptation of eating out all the time. Many families spent all their money eating out! Also remember that food cost money and so avoid wasting food
3.Rent
4.Insurance
5.Telephone/other miscellaneous bills
6.Pocket money-Allow each other some reasonable amount of money that each uses as need be.Due to their many needs, women need to be allocated more money than men.
7.Others-Decide on whom of your relatives/friends you should help.Be fair to both sides.Avoid being controlled by some relatives!
8.Investing on some projects -Herein lives many problems-deception, and misunderstanding. You need to decide on what projects you should carry out. You need to address the issue of where and who will oversee those projects. Many families have been deceived by some relatives. Also avoid rushing into projects because so and so is doing it.
9.Savings-Although I know that it’s tough, form a habit of saving some money every pay period.

Next time we’ll talk about a joint account! Will you be there?

Just a thought!
