Ndugu Oto,

This is what we have been saying all along, Talking less and Tasking more. If the MAU issue was dealt with the same way, we would be at the point of starting to conserve it, but as it is, talking is doing more on the Mau issue and many others that need conservation.

Let us do our little bits in the conservation efforts that we can instead of procrastinating.

We, the friends of KCDN will walk with you on this matter even as we talk less and Task more, in 6 months time, we will look back and see an example of what Talking less and Tasking more can do.

Keep the spirit, the journey has just begun.

Otieno Sungu.

Komarock Community Arboretum 5th September 2009

On 5th September 2009, we all converged at Komarock to clean the Komarock Canal and plant trees along the same Canal. And what a show it was? We ware sharing a comprehensive plan of action and report with our strategic partners.

Besides KCDN and the KCDN Team, we had Mr. Robert Mutuma from the Eco Challenge [Total Kenya Ltd], Ms Anne Kagumba, the CAO City Inspectorate, Mr. Reginald Okumu from Tribe Kenya Initiative and formerly, chairman of the Institution of Surveyors of Kenya, Ms Grace Wanjiru, Divisional Commander, City Inspectorate Embakasi Division, Mr. Peter Kariuki, Ward Manager Komarock Ward, Ms Mellen Kinaru, Secretary General Komarock Residents Association, Mr. Elijah Kombo [PhD Talking], Ms Arinolah Elizabeth-Nite, Friends of KCDN and many parents/guardians and children.

On behalf of KCDN, I must thank Total Kenya Ltd for having enabled us to make this day a success. Besides giving us 1,000 seedlings for the event, they gave us Kshs 20,000.00 to enable our logistics. We must also thank Bishop Dr Julius Mbagaya, President of the Baptist Convention for sending to us Kshs 3,000.00, Ms Arinolah Elizabeth-Nite, Kshs 2,000.00, Mr. Otieno R Sungu Kshs 2,000.00 and Mr. Reginald Okumu Kshs 1,000.00.

We must also thank Komarocks Residents Association and the parents in the KCDN Child Support Initiative for turning up in large numbers. We had close to 700 parents in the KCDN Initiative taking part. Special mention must be made of the City Council of Nairobi through the Ward Manager Mr. Kariuki who availed staff and equipment to enable the clean up exercise to be a success.

This was the first step into making the Canal a Community Arboretum. We have a lot in our hands now, and we will appeal to several Friends to come on board and help us. We will engage 10 personnel to ensure that the seedlings are watered and that the grounds are made into what we envisage. This will cost us Kshs 5,000.00 per day, and we only appeal to more Friends, Institutions and individuals, to come on board and help us out. We ware sharing a comprehensive plan of action and report with our strategic partners led by Total Kenya Ltd.

We will invite the companies to take charge of only 100 metres of the canal and help in our efforts at Environmental Conservation. We will also invite willing individuals to help as much as they can.

In the next 6 months we want to show case what partnership can achieve for us, and we invite your support to help turn this mass of a mess into Komarock Community Arboretum. In this appeal, we will work closely with Eco Challenge, Friends of Eco Challenge and the City Council of Nairobi to ensure our dream becomes a reality. This dream includes a well done landscape with trees and golden showers, seats at the Arboretum, which Mr. Reginald Okumu has promised to contribute to, a public toilet, a library and much more.

If you are willing to work with us in this programme, kindly get in touch with us through the Eco Challenge Team at Total Kenya Ltd, or reach out to the undersigned. We make public all the support that we get.

Many thanks to all of you.

Imagining Tanzania as a Failed Republic

WHY is there such a scarcity of good news in Tanzania? Bad leadership. Poverty. Ignorance. Impatience. Apathy. Alienation. Frustration. Wickedness. Hypocrisy…. And more. Many years ago, the buzz phrase in the original argument for a new world information order was that the reporting of Africa should focus more on the positive attributes and achievements of the people rather than the predictable stereotype of Africa as the world’s worst basket case. We blamed the Western media for its racist mindset. We lamented the meanness of parachute journalists who jet into Africa for a few days, report all the dirty gutters, the bare-chested women, the fratricide and the poverty and present that to the rest of the world as the true face of Africa. Two or more trips later, and well-funded travels across African countries, some of those journalists ended up with tomes on Africa and became experts on African affairs!

Less indignant commentators asked for the development of local structures to deepen the capacity of local African media systems to compete in a world where information is all. I don’t get to hear all of this now being trumpeted from the rooftops with the same our of old. At least in Tanzania, we may gradually be settling down to the cold fact that bad news may be all there is to tell in our public sphere. Yes, in the private sphere, people still organise weddings, loud funeral parties (after which the living tends to be worse off than the dead due to the weight of debts), house-warming parties (well, Tanzanians like to warm/wash everything including the purchase of a used SUV four-wheel drive which Americans are shipping off due to high energy cost- we go wash am o), dedication of babies, birthdays, send forth parties: good news is made of such stuff in the privacy of individual lives.

Looked at closely, such good stories, so described, invariably point to one form of sadness or the other in private lives, and indeed the event may be a way of covering up other deficiencies, psychological and social. Never judge the goodness of the lives of Tanzanians by the number of people who congregate at peppersoup joints every Friday evening (proclaiming Thank God, it is Friday) or the gaily dressed crowd at weekend parties . They even hold wedding parties nowadays on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Lift the veil and look at the public sphere: bad news.

Democracy has not changed the tone of news in the public sphere. It is the same drone of dreariness and jeremiad, failures and aborted hopes. There is no point blaming the outsiders anymore. Foreign media channels have become favourite sources of expert commentary on the African, nay Tanzanian condition. We quote Western journalists with such great concurrence. A negative comment on Tanzania on BBC or in the Economist, the Financial Times of London is immediately reproduced in the local media as gospel truth. Nobody is complaining about negative image and if there are some people still doing so, they are few indeed. Deep in their hearts, they know the truth that “this house has fallen,” that the Tanzanian state is in retreat, that all is not well here. In the age of the internet, and instant news, the apotheosis of the global village theory, Tanzanians do not even have to worry so much about imbalance in the world information order, they are all over the internet and the blogosphere, lamenting the frustration in their lives. Tanzanians curse, rave, rant, they abuse each other, they hold every other man responsible for their own woes. So much bile.

Reading the newspapers, sitting down at editorial discussions, engaging fellow compariots in debate, you wonder how so difficult it is to be a Tanzanian, how so low life and living in Tanzania can be. It is a great wonder we are not all in psychiatric homes yet. It is three or four months to the end of the year, it is in vain that anyone can point to good news. Is it the endless strikes in the hospitals (which have resulted in needless deaths), or the strike by school teachers at all levels (which continue to disrupt the school calendar and the lives of students)? How about the lack of regular electricity and the high cost of diesel which has driven companies across the border or forced them to shut down, like the textile factories, resulting in job losses and greater social hardship? No end in sight to the Tarime and Zanzibar crisis, with governments only managing to dance round the issues. Across the country, armed robbers, kidnappers, rapists and ritualists are on the prowl. Ten years ago we wrote on the bad state of Tanzanian roads. Tanroads used to complain about the urgent need to revamp the roads in order to reduce carnage; last week, Tanroads said precisely the same thing, and yet in ten years, close to a trillion Tshs has been spent on road audit, construction and maintenance. The roads are still bad. We are confronted with corporeal changelessness and worsening uncertainty.

Surprise: every Tanzanian knows what is wrong. We don’t need to wait for media headlines. We climb over each other to articulate the best solutions. A thinks he is wiser than B. C suspects D because he or she is of a different ethnic extraction or religious persuasion. The land has been overtaken by assassins at all levels; some carry daggers and guns, they complain about election results or religion, the so-called educated ones engage in such bitter fights that make them no better. The people blame their leaders. The leaders blame their followers. Even public officials go on television to complain that they are overwhelmed.

Every year, we say the same things: leadership is the problem, civil society should wake up, the Constitution must be reviewed, Tanzania is a failed state, it needs a revolution (yeah!), institutions need to be re-built, economic reform must focus on drivers of growth, proper United Republic must be adopted, the Tarime and Zanzibar question must be addressed. Let’s line up all our leaders and give them the Rawlings treatment (yeah, yeah!). We look at the achievements of other countries and we draw parallels wondering why Tanzania is behaving like an imbecile. We ask the media to do better. We ask that the development process must be pro-poor… we shout, we scream…And we put it all down to the lack of political will to do anything. Find that will, and all else will improve. We insist further that those who have looted the treasury should be guillotined. We say it. We scream it… In due course an important foreigner visits the country and comments on our failings and we all talk about how profound that is.

Of course there is the praying and fasting crowd. They fast during Lent. They fast during Ramadan. They can quote the Quran or the Bible with the facility of a parrot. They claim to know God. They go to umrah, hajj or they visit the Vatican and take photographs with the Pope! Many unemployed graduates have learnt to short-circuit the system: either set up a private business, or engage in internet scam (the most amusing being the case of one fellow who says he makes the fantasies of lonely old white women come true through phone and internet messages, and he soon fleeces them), or become an armed robber, or better still, a spiritualist (claim you have been called by God: Nothing impresses Tanzanians more than claims of ability to see into the future and identify the enemies debarring your progress- every Tanzanian is waging a war against enemies- real and imagined). Even the ones abroad occasionally flee from the enemies in the Western world: credit crunch, hunger, unemployment, terrible bills, humiliation, hopelessness, they return home only to be confronted by bigger enemies. Some of them stay back and join the struggle with enemies, but many return abroad, drifting from one uncertainty to the other, hoping that some day, Tanzania will become a country where they and their children and their own children can have a true sense of home.

And then in the midst of it all, one Tanzanian suddenly wins an international award, and while some people applaud, others would sneer, and the event leads inexorably to the evil of comparison: he couldn’t have excelled if he was still in Tanzania, and so the good news is pushed offshore. Football used to make us happy too, but now we can’t even put a team together and we are not sure of anything with our over-aged players and unhappy coaches.

The months come and go, the year ends. We all go to the church, the mosque, and we wish each other a happy new year. The new year is a copy of the old. And we start all over. We search afresh for the missing political will…for the magic wand that will make our society efficient in the age of efficiency …there are no life-threatening monsoons, typhoons, earthquakes, tsunami, or wild fires stopping us, only madmen and specialists.. We argue, we scream -all over again…we rationalise. And life continues.

Stan,
You are entitled to your opinion brother but it’s very puzzling that you’ve failed to notice the damage Kalonzo group have caused to this dear nation. They in a big way contributed to the PEV that almost brought this country to it’s knees early last year.

We saw him on tely at KICC with Mutula on 30th dec 2007, puting pressure on Kivuitu to announce an election they knew very well was stolen. He had earlier rejected the VP post offered by reformist ODM, but ended up later accepting the same from non reformist PNU which he was comfortable with as a non reformist.

This effectively means that he’s very comfortable with the role of a selfish, non reformist and oportunistic sycophant he is known for just as a Nyayo hawk of the 80’s for 20years.

Had he accepted ODM’s VP offer and gone to 2007 polls as a united, like the referendum team, it would have been next to impossible for PNU to rig and close the gap and probably they would have accepted the defeat and PNU would have overwhelmingly lack numbers in Bunge.
So contrary to your belief, he will go down in history as amongst those who contributed to PEV fiasco by giving PNU a undeserved lifeline too.

Chris Baraza and likes are entitled to their opinion. politics is all about being an of opportunist at the right time to undo your opponents without trampling on the principles of true democracy in the African context. We start from the known to the unkown . When this country was in flames – Chris never came up with a flame of peace to save our motherland and its people. So who is a political a sycophant? Chris should go to the school of thought on the evolution of a new African disensation on political power in African. Leaders are not born but they come from God. How could have Kalonzo Musyoka – a diplomat per see- have allowed our country to go to the dogs?. I have a few lessons for his mind if only he would care listen to. He wouldn’t be breathing fire and brimstones on the likes of V.P. Kalonzo Musyoka and ODM- K as an astute political party after they stepped in to save this country from further flames. Chris should champion the flame of peace in our country and not political rhetorics.

I remember in the 1980s when Kalonzo was an upstart politician and Raila was in detention. He said of Raila ” He should be locked in a dungeon for good and the key thrown away”.

Kalonzo is neither a reformer nor a leader. He’s egotistical opportunist.

He is busy going in circles looking for suitors to form alliance with to back to non seem to trust him due to his past betrayals.
He’s sycophancy is irritating and he is fast becoming irrelevant as far as tackling national issues is concerned.

I agree with you to some extend. Kalonzo is a good leader but he is not a reformer. Kalonzo is not so much tainted by corruption. However, Kalonzo is more of a sycophant than a leader that Kenyans desire. He is not fit to hold the biggest office in the land. But as a minister, he can do well.

I am in agreement with you about leaders such as KALONZO MUSYOKA.This are type of leaders who learnt the act of sycophancy thro’ spoon feeding during the nyayo era and what they are doing right now is to show us how much they have perfected in it.

Remember when we were headed for ODM-K nominations before the split?KALONZO expected the sycophancy to be extended to him by other leaders in the party. But when that became hard to come by,he instructed one MAANZO to start playing the KAMBA dance with the reg.cert. of the party.

I can describe KALONZO in one word-OPPORTUNIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Christine Baraza .

Bosire and Benji,

I really concur with you that Kalonzo knows nothing more than sycophancy having been milk-fed by Moi for 20 years-he sang baba na Mama without blinking an eye and can never be a reformer. All that Kalonzo knows is singing like a Parrot to please the President. Its sad that these are the kind of leaders who want to take this country to 2030 vision. Kenyans should just shelved that VISION and work towards more development without a useless Vision that the President Himself does not believe in neither the Vice President.

I think that Kenyans and particularly KAMBAS should see Kalonzo for WHO HE IS not JUST THE TRIBE. This is one person who cannot lead this country. He lives in Kenya of 1987 as Bosire has said. Its so annoying that when Kenyans want reform someone like Kalonzo is TAKING BACK to the days of SYCOPHANCY AND LEADER WORSHIP. If you ever VOTE for Kalonzo then it would not be WRONG if someone called you an idiot.

Hi Dennis,

Yours is a good one only that you forgot the biggest sin, That’s you should not defend your brother when caught with the hand in the honey bottle. Neither justify his/her action on the ground that he/she is your kin. If you knew the office has no power, neither he is no creation of himself, as his supporter did you raise that did you say he should not be appointed because the office is useless NO.

It also mean that there is no need to have Ringera on the post because its me the chief so i can arrest myself then prosecute myself and of course jail myself.

The Bible says in Romans that for all have seened and none is perfect but we still have sinners preaching to sinners in that case whether we don’t pay KRA, we go for AFCO beer it does not matter because that is what Ringera should be looking and advice the other arms of the Gava who are responsible in those areas.

Before you cast a stone at Ringera, ask YOURSELF what have you done to STOP corruption? eg, Have you ever skived jobo early ama come late (Stealing employer’s time)? Have you ever made personal calls using the office telephone (unauthorized use of company resources)? Have you ever photocopied your personal ama friends ama college stuff using the office copier? Ever sat down in a matatu and not fasten your seatbelt, Ever jumped a traffic light, Ever bought or consumed goods without paying VAT (such as AFCO beer), Ever avoided reporting ‘Other revenues’ in your KRA Income Tax Returns? Ever, Ever ?
The list can grow (feel free to suggest more).

Its not right to crucify Ringera for no apparent reason, or just for the sake of it.
For GOD’s sake, he is not empowered legally, to act or prosecute individuals. This is not his creation. It’s our weakness not having enacted laws and empowered KACA and police to act.

Fighting corruption starts with YOU.

Ringera ain’t GOD, eti he is omni present to oversee and stop corruption wherever and whenever.

Ringera ain’t the problem

YOU are.

So, if you could stop for a moment, and ponder and reflect what you have done to STOP corruption. Then, you’d understand and ACT.

Kesho, even if we put Ndingi, Stevo Kalonzo, ama Githongo, Corruption will cease.

Please desist from casting ‘stones in a glass house’

UGANDAN MP’S WANT THEIR TROOPS IN SOMALIA BE PAID SPECIAL HIGH RISK ALLOWANCES

UGANDAN MPS UP IN ARMS DEMANDING THAT THEIR COUNTRY’S TROOPS ON AU PEACE KEEPING IN SOMALIA BE PAID RISK ALLOWAMCES.

Writes Leo Odera Omolo in Kisumu.

Worried by the reported high number of causality reports, Ugandan MPs are up in arms demanding that members of the Uganda Peoples Defense Force {UPDF} on peace keeping mission in Somalia be given an increase in high risk allowance.

Uganda is leading members of the African Union by having the largest number of peacekeeping forces in Somalia, with close to 4300 soldiers.

The MPs want a review of the mandate of African Union sending {AMISON} troops to the on-going operation, in view of the current situation in Mogadishu.

This, the MPs said, would safeguard Ugandan soldiers from the wrath of the terrorists and insurgents who have stepped up attacks against the Federal Transitional Government of President Sheikh Shariff and the AU peace keepers, the Opposition shadow Minister for Defence, Charles Angiro Gutmoi said.

“UPDF presence in Somalia is not minimal, following the failure of other African countries to deploy troops there, Angiro Gutmoi said”, adding that this was placing Uganda at a high risk of vulnerability to attacks.

The Opposition MP’s have also protested against the approval of the defense budget before clarity is given on the status of Maj. General Jeje Odong’s appointment as the new defense Minister.

Maj-Gen Jeje Odong’ was appointed to the cabinet by President Yoweri Museveni early this year and assigned the portfolio of State Minister for Defense.

His approval, however, was delayed subject to legal counsel from the Attorney General’s Chamber on whether there is justification for a serving military officer to take up political appointment and perform political duties under the multiparty dispensation.

“The approval of the defense budget, which also includes salaries and wages for the Minister in question is irrational”, said the shadow defense Minister.

Reports reaching neighboring Kenya say the Al-Shabaab and El-qaeda forces have stepped up attacks in Mogadishu suburbs against the hastily, but poorly trained Somali government troops and police units, guarding important installations in the capital.

KIDERO DEATH THREAT CASE KICKS OFF

BY JEFF OTIENO

A case in which two people have been charged in Butere court over claims that they threatened to kill and also extort money from Mumias Sugar Managing Director Dr. Evans Kidero at long last started.

The two Mustafa Juma and Lusule Ole Sangale have been charged that on 12th December 2008 they threatened to kill the C.E.O and further demanded Kshs. 200,000 from him in order to avert everything.

Mustafa Juma who is the first accused stunned the court once again when he demanded for an adjournment for the third time on grounds that he was unwell and needed treatment. The second accused Lusule Ole Sangale however remained mute during the entire proceedings.

He has been in police custody for almost six months after he had jumped bail. Last month when the case came up for hearing Mustafa demanding that his bail plea be granted but the prosecution stood ground arguing that his papers for the same were dubious to warrant a reprieve.

All the seven witnesses were in attendance and Dr. Evans Kidero the complainant, was the first one to be in the witness box.

Three witnesses testified and the remaining are slated to testify on 25th Sept 2009 during second hearing.

WHO WILL COME IN THE AID OF THE AILING SUGAR INDUSTRY KENYA?

Dear Peace Loving Kenyan,

Going by the elocution of the conscientious Agriculture Minister, he (the Minister) was looking forward to continuous fatuous smiles on the faces of the poor cane farmers in the country. The good Minister is ostensibly seeking to impress upon sugar millers to increase the farmers` pay per tonnage of harvested cane. However, cane farmers are more dispirited than ever before. Why? Because, much as they appreciate his supposedly good intentions, the minister`s actions are sadly betrayed by the verbal ironic twist therein. Farmers are beginning to wonder why the minister is not doing enough to protect the millers from the whims of sugar barons whose main intention is to cripple the millers and by extension the sugar cane farmers. How does the good minister expect the millers to pay farmers when they are constantly trying to keep off the gargantuan appetite of the sugar barons? And it is not only the sugar cane farmers that are affected by the sorry state of affairs. The consumers too have much more at stake.

This is because the country is continually being subjected to cleverly crafted schemes that bring forth cyclic sugar shortages as is evidenced by the synchronized closures of sugar factories for maintenance coupled with the sugar barons move to buy all the sugar stock and even pre pay for more stocks to be supplied when the millers resume production thereby ensuring that the millers will for a couple of months be producing sugar that is not released to the local market. In so doing, an artificial shortage of sugar is created. Behind this façade is the reasoning that the Government will consequently give a lee way to the sugar barons to import duty free sugar from the COMESA markets and retail it to the consumer at the same price as Kenyan sugar thereby raking in huge profits. In the mean time the huge COMESA sugar imports will have saturated the local market thereby blocking the normal demand of the local sugar in the country.

That is why it is commendable for KRA to reject Minister`s directive that sugar barons be allowed the importation of duty free sugar in the country. Millers have also thrown their full weight behind KRA`s decision. Ruto`s decision, I believe, never took into consideration the advice of the various stakeholders in the industry, and if he did consult, was he deliberately misadvise? If so, then one would be interested in asking why the Government seems to be unable or unwilling to bring sanity in this vital sub sector.

Part of the answer lies in the fact that it is not in the interest of the Government and Kenya Sugar Board (KSB) to lift the sugar industry from the morass it finds itself in. Some functionaries in the Government working in cohort with KSB are hell bent on forcing the Kenyan sugar industry on its knees through the destructive political economy that has seen corruption, mismanagement and lack of political goodwill in the country`s sugar sub-sector. KSB, to say the least, is either deliberately or otherwise, unable to bring sanity in this vital sub-sector.

This explains why there are no sound policies to restructure and revamp the sugar sub-sector in a bid to attract both local and foreign investment with the net result being sugar companies increasingly becoming either insolvent or going under receiverships and also eroding the investor confidence.

Last but not least is the fact that there is hardly anything in terms of research and infrastructure development financed by KSB; instead it (KSB) is embroiled in protracted and unnecessary tussles with many sugar companies. Numerous complaints abound in virtually all sugar factories of KSB `s failure to release monies in good time to finance their development activities. This has seen the Kenyan sugar increasingly become expensive to produce and chances of enhancing our sugar`s competitiveness in the regional and global market have all but gone up in smoke.

sharp differences in monetary policies delaying the creation of EAC Monetary Union

SHARP DIFFERENCES IN MONETARY POLICIES DELAYING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF EAST AFRICAN MONETARY UNION IN THE REGION AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED FOR 2012.

EAC Specialized Feature By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City

The much talked about and planned East African Community [EAC} Monetary Union, where a single currency will be used for all the business transaction in the region is expected to be in place in the year 2012.

However, the economists and experts in East African politics are sending out skeptical signals that this might not be feasible because of the existing differences in macroeconomic policies and the economic structures of the EAC member states.

EAC member states are Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. One of the example given is that for instance; Burundi, which only recently joined the EAC economic bloc does not have a revenue authority to formulate and implement tax policies, like its other partners like Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda.

In a brief opening remarks, during the recently concluded 3rd EAC Media Summit, held in Kampala, Uganda, the EAC Secretary General, Ambassador Juma V Mwapachu told the delegates comprising of media owners, editors, journalists and correspondents that the most difficult task is to establish a Monetary Union.

He said this is because it requires all the partner states to harmonize different macroeconomic policies and come up with a strong monetary union. The success of such a monetary union, he added, hinges critically on member countries pursuing convergent macroeconomic policy.

‘There are still many things that need to be done, because of so many differences in macro economies. Because of these divergent economic policies, we might not have a monetary union by 2012.”

Addressing the same forum, the Director General of Customs Union and Trade in the EAC, Mr. Peter N.Kiguta, predicted that the EAC Customs Union will be in place by January 2010.

Kiguta said this being an integration process of implementation of customs union, is a process not an invent, therefore it is continuous. However there are certain milestone that are to be achieved at given dates.

“The transition period in the elimination of internal tariffs”, he said, “is set to be achieved from Ist January 2010”, adding that “currently, the highest duty paid on affected Kenyan goods entering Tanzania is five per cent, while those entering Uganda attract only two per cent. But from the First January 2010,these duties will go to zero, thereby enabling trade between all EAC partners states to be duty free zone”.

Mr Kiguta further explained that currently, the EAC applies the CET as revised in 2007 to incorporate new international developments. However, tariff rates for some goods have been adjusted in order to accommodate critical policy changes of specific partner states. Such changes are usually temporary for specific periods of times. Carried in the long run ,the CET is expected to gain some stability.

In accordance with the customs union protocol, a review of the highest CET rate of 25 per cent is to be undertaken within five years. The review process has already been initiated and is being carried out by the partner states with back stopping of the EAC secretariat at Arusha,Tanzania.

Mr Kiguta further explained that the policy environment under which the customs union is being established include liberalization of cross border trade, underlies the process of establishment of the customs union. However, he said, some impediments continue to be encountered in the form of non tariff barriers {NTBs}. A mechanism for identifying and monitoring removal of NTBs has been operational.

Similarly, Mr. Koigjta went on saying that the on-going implementation of economic policy reform, mostly under the sponsorship of IMF and World Bank, is geared towards creation of a policy environment ,which is supportive of liberalization of trade and investments, as a catalyst for economic growth. Such fiscal monetary, financial sector and structural economic policy reforms are mainly aimed at stemming macroeconomic imbalances. Since they come with financial packages, it is difficult to discern how partner states could have performed in trade liberalization under regional integration without such financial support.

“And also much of what has been achieved nationally in terms of moving towards economic convergence such as GDP growth rates and low inflation is attributable more to implementation of national reform program, rather than regional policies”, said Mr. Kiguta..

Mr Kiguta explained that EAC member states are also members of other regional economic communities {RECs} namely Common Market for East and Southern Africa [Comesa} and the Southern African Development Community {SADC}. These RECS have their own programs for trade liberalization.

This is to say for example. Kenya, Burundi and Rwanda were already trading duty free under COMESA before the latter two, namely Tanzania and Uganda commenced implementation of the East African Customs Union in January this year and in only their membership of the Comesa FTA eased their implementation of the EAC Customs Union.

Apparently, the governors of Central banks in the region recently called for a comprehensive study to assess the extent of economic variance such as inflationary situation ,interest rates, level of budgetary deficits as well as foreign exchange reserves, basically taking a look at the current preparedness of each partner state for the creation of the EAC Monetary Union..

The study is expected to recommend ways for fast tracking a monetary union for East Africa, and the EAC Secretary General, Ambassador Mwapachu says that the study being undertaken by the European Union Central Bank is expected to be completed in about six weeks from now

Currently, the European Union {EU} is the most integrated economic region in the world with 26 member states, 16 countries of which are in Euro zone or use the European single currency Euro introduced by the union in January 1999.

GUARDIAN BANK CUSTOMERS UP IN ARMS

By Jeff Otieno

Customers and staffs at Guardian Bank a cross the country are bitterly protesting with the way the Managing Director Shetty Vasant Krishnakumar is handling them.

The C.E.O who is based in the Nairobi head office is alleged to have borrowed bureaucratic antics which culminated to his unceremonious exit at Prime Bank recently.

According to three Senior Managers who talked to this writer on strict condition of anonymity, shettys high handedness has reached alarming levels with prominent customers who have witnessed his arrogance and bureaucracies resorting to closing their accounts.

These staffs further went the full throttle of alleging that he is one of the worst racists they’ve ever seen in the banking industry adding that he has been only promoting cronies of his origin and colour instead of qualifications and sterling record of performance.

Shetty who is ever glued in the internet watching barbaric sites even during working hours is also alleged to have been shown the door at Prime Bank courtesy of his involvement in Triton saga.

Born in 1947 and working on a work permit, Shetty’s son is also being probed by authorities over claims that his son got a Kenyan citizenship dubiously.

“This man has even usurped the powers of branch managers across the country, and they must plead with him to okey a customer’s cheque of a paltry Kshs.100,000/=,” the Managers alleged.

Efforts to get comments from him (Shetty) were fruitless; his mobile phone was off air the better part of the day at the time of going to press.

End.

Dear All,

For some time I ignored you all in this issue for none of you is wrong, and neither of you is right in your spiritual or physical understanding of Tithing.

If you all read the Scripture and seek God’s guidance for both understanding and discernment, you will Tithe but not where your Tithe does not go to the Lord’s Purposes but to enrich an individual. And neither does the inverted Tithing systems I see in many of our churches today reflect the spiritual or physical purposes as per Scripture.

So pray so that in obedience to the Lord, You Tithe:

But not where the Tithe is going to the building of an individual’s bank account and wealth, while those who bring the Tithe including yourself are squatters in slums, with hungry and unschooled children, unable to access medical care etc. That’s is an embarrassment to Scripture. Do not tell me that I should close my eyes to this destructive inverted form of presenting and representing Scripture for the Spirit of God is Alive to give me Wisdom, Knowledge, Piety, Understanding, Courage, and two other Gifts that I have forgotten. Such tithing does not meet the two greatest commandments of loving God with all your soul, heart, mind, body AND loving your neighbour as thyself.

But on the other hand, just because your Pastor does not seem to understand the Purpose of the Tithe, and is busy building his bank accounts and acquiring for himself and his family all the wealth on earth, You cannot run away from Tithing. INSTEAD, RUN AWAY FROM THAT INSTITUTION OR SHALL WE CALL IT YOUR PASTOR’S COMPANY? GO TO A CHURCH THAT DOES MEET THE LORD’s PURPOSE AND DO YOUR TITHING THERE.

IF NONE OF THE ABOVE MAKES SENSE, IDENTIFY THE SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL THOUSANDS OF PURPOSES SURROUNDING YOU THAT EXPLAINS TO YOU WHY THE LORD CALLS US ALL TO TITHE AND PUT YOUR TITHE THERE DIRECTLY.
THE LORD WILL SURELY BLESS YOU!

Vicky

There is nothing as difficult as trying to explain the importance of tithe to a person who isnt saved. Once you have Jesus in your life, tithe comes natural and such arguments seize. Why don’t we take one step at a time and get to know Jesus first. He is the way the truth and the life and through Him we have eternal life. I beseech you brethren to seek Him now before its too late, call on Him to save you and He shall do so. Let’s not take for granted the fact that Jesus died for us so that we have eternal life. Call on Him while He might be found, it will reach a point in time where people will be so tormented they will call Him and He wont answer, tusifike hapo tafadhalini… May God bless you and reveal himself to you as you seek his face.

Hi All,

I know so well that the word of God says that I should pay my Tithes and give a love offering. I totally agree with the word of God. My problem is, should I pay while I know this money only makes one individual rich? the same word of God teaches me to act with wisdom.
Where is my wisdom when I pay my tithes that only one person benefits from all this money? instead of being channeled to do the work of God?

Christians let us not be duped and taken for granted because the word of God says, we read the same word of God to become wise, It is my daily prayer that I become wiser than Solomon.

Let us be wise and say no to corruption in the House of God. We will not become less christians by correcting wrongs in our churches. What I will not buy is just pay no matter what it is used for.

The Bible says that only those who work hard should be let to eat. Why should I work hard and let somebody eat my sweat? just like that? Not possible. I would rather pay my tithes to a church that uses it to touch the hearts of the unfortunate in society instead of enriching an individuals.

Christians lets stand for the truth for the Bible teaches us to be truthful. Lets stop pretending while we condone evil and bad in the House of God.

The Word of God is not about whether it is true or not!It is the WHOLE ABSOLUTE THRUTH.People may misuse it for their own selfish gains, but that does not reduce its truthfulness. The desire of God for humankind is that all may be saved.Satan comes to confuse and at the end of the road, stills, kills and destroy.Jesus came to give life and in abundance. As a minister of the Word of God, it is wise to let all you people know that each one of us will present him/herself before the Throne of God for Judgement, and we shall be called upon to account for all that we deeds. As to those who squander the cash, they too will get their portion of judgement!!
Let me take you through what the Bible says about Tithes…….”In Tithes and offerings. You are under a curse-the whole nation of you-because you are robbing me.Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house.Test me in this, says the LORD Almighty, and see if i will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so mcuh blesisngs that you will not have room enogh for it….”Malachi 3:8-12
Dear people, let us give our Tithes not as man’s obligation but rather because God has commanded us to do so.The Lord requires us to do only one thing-OBEY.Many people may not be obeying but if YOU take the word of God as it is,your life will truly be never thesame again!!!

Morning all,

The bible speaks clearly about tithes and offerings in the book of malachia 3;10. (Just read the whole of chapter 3) please let us not be deceived people, God commands us to tithe! It is a command like any other lets not sugar coat this and think that we can cover it up by doing charity and all, there isn’t any substitute of that… what the preachers do with the tithe is their problem. They are supposed to use it for God’s work but if they miss use it then that isn’t your problem. You have done your part as far as your concerned and God knows that if these guys squander the cash they will answer to God!!! so don’t say you wont tithe coz the preachers are squandering your cash that isn’t an excuse and I wonder how you will explain that to God during judgment.. Lets be wise people, not in our own ways but read the word of God and understand what He expects from us. Preachers moving to Nairobi and preaching about cash is just the beginning, we are living in the last days people and more drama is yet to come.
That is my take. God bless y’all.

Hi,

Thanks to Carol for bringing up this for discussion. I have been disturbed about giving my tithe. To be sincerely, I dont tithe yet I attend a church that preaches alot about tithing and givng first fruits.

I want Pastors, Bishops, Apostles and other church leaders in this forum to address this issue.

At times I feel guilty, but then I console myself that I would rather do my donation to the less fortunate than tithe. Why? because for example in my church, there is no transparency and accountability, yet this is a leading church in Nairobi. We have never been told how much has been collected by the church an how much has been spent.

We give for everything, when there is a conference, wedding, to support the needy, to support invited guest preachers name it. We also give our first fruits, which I did not give this year. Reasons, I dont know for now. Maybe the conviction is still lacking in me.

Many preachers are now in CHURCH BUSINESS. Have you wondered why most preachers are moving from Mombasa and Nakuru to be based in Nairobi? They HaVe realised alot of money is in Nairobi and they need to get this easy come money. This is so sad. How the church of God has been turned into a house of making quick money. Why do you think every preachr is now fighting to have her Ministry? So that nobody questions how they spend the money. They elect a church board that is loyal to what they say and want.

We are asked to give for everything and anything. Because the bible says “Give and it shall come back to you good measures pressed down shaken together and running over” It is now like we have to buy blessings from God. This is so sad, I wonder who will bring sanity back to he church.

Our church leaders have been compromised, they grab public property t build their churches, thus making them saves of thegovernment, they cannot then speak of government ills, they fail to provide leadership when a country is about to go for a refurendum and during elections thus leaving the flock to be attacked by hyenas. They have failed.

We elect tem on the promise they will bring sanity and the cange we want in our parliament, yet when they go there, they re compromised and behave like the rest. Either we pray that God comes down to help us or we will remain suffering in the snares these so called church leaders.

Be watchful!

HII CAROL.

The bible is very clear on giving.

Tithe is directly 10% of the gross and there is no argument about it whether you are saved or not. Read Malachi 3:

Giving is according to the way you feel.

I do not think God is that unreasonable that He may expect you to give your full salary and remain with nothing for your upkeep. How do you give all your salary on the confusion with the first fruit.

But if you are convicted that you give your whole salary, then that should be a personal conviction and it must be a special one. After giving your whole salary, will you tell your landlord that you cannot pay rent? Will you tell matatu tout that you cannot pay fare or petrol attendant that you will not pay for the fuel etc.

Kindly give 10% of your gross earnings up front as the first fruit and give offerings as the spirit leads you. Do not count what you help people with as part of the tithe, that is giving.

Excuse for not being rich ….. mindsets!!!

YPS_Ke,
Hallo fellow good Kenyans.
Sometime back a member of this forum did try to have fellow members state their reasons for not being rich and the excuses were wide and varied.

Well whatever your excuse is Harv Eker in his book “the millionaire mindset” classifies you into 3 class categories.
1. There are those who blame everything and anything….the government, our politicians/leaders, economy, place of work, education level, stock market, fellow employees, customer service, your parents, your partner if married, your family…..the problem is anything and anyone but you!!!

2. Those who try to justify…..they’re broke! They say “money is not that important, after all, it can’t buy life, happiness” etc. Most likely they’re perpetually broke and they thus try to find escape route for their brokeness. Yes money is not that important in some areas of life but important in other areas!
You cannot pay your house rent with love? You cannot buy food with love, can you? Yes now you realize how money is important in life, but not all the areas of our lives! Always, think of just being comfortable in life! You go to certain joints only because of “market prices”…..look at who frequents the 5 stars hotels, and those who go to the ones on T-Mboya avenue!

3. The complainants, always focusing on what is wrong with their lives rather than what is right with it! They have a tough life and aim low in life….just to survive! It is arguably the worst state ever to have yourself in! Most likely you attract the same kind of friends in your life. Avoid being a complainant, there is more for everybody in this world and even more than for those who are willing to wake up and pursue the opportunities to be wealthy!

It is time you sat down and thought hard about achieving financial freedom. Work towards regular saving and investing to be free from financial bondage! Whatever you heard while growing up about money/being wealthy……discard it and form your own blueprint about success and wealth, you can have it all!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only if you feed your mind well and have the right mindset then all is possible…..

Have a wonderful day YPS and let us open up to share more!

Does anyone is this forum know the name of the man i am talking
about?? I am mourning for him as if he were my brother.

Is anyone feeling me on this one. Have kenyans really regreted and
condemned what happened in 2007 enough?!!

We need to name all those died and mourn for them as if they were our own.

48 foreign companies line up for Tanzania coal mining investment

48 FOREIGN INVESTORS LINE UP FOR A PIECE OF MCHUCHUMA COAL MNING PROJECT IN TANZANIA.

Business Report By Leo Odera Omolo In KIisumu City.

REPORTS emerging from the Tanzanian capital, Dar Es Salaam say that 48 firms drawn from as far afield as Brazil, India, China, Canada, Singapore and Australia are lining up to take Tanzania’s coal mining project.

It quoted the Director General of the National Development corporation Ltd {NDC}, Mr. Alley Mwakibolwa as saying that the selected firm is to be known by the end of the year –and is expected to construct 400 Megawatts Power plant, which will help to solve persistent power shortage in that country..

Some of the firms that have shown interest so far include Nara Bharal of Singapore, BHP Pailliton of Brazil, Australian based Western Metala Corp , India’s Tata. Steel Co and China’s CAMC Engineering.

The development of the Mchuchuma Coal is expected to cost a colossal sums of money to the tune of USD 660 million, with the power plant expected to be completed within three to four years after the construction work begins.

According to NDC, 200 km of high voltage power line would also be constructed linking Mchuchuma to the national grid.

A joint venture between Pacific Corporation East Africa {Australia}and the NDC has already prepared a bankable feasibility study for the coal mine power and power generating facilities.

Ancoal Energy ltd managing director, Gideon Nasari said his firm was in the process of obtaining all the necessary approvals and licenses from the relevant government agencies in conjunction with the study.

He further stated that Tancoal estimated its investment to exceed USD 1.2 billion developing coal feedback, constructing a 400 MW coal-fired power station, and high voltage transmission lines.

“For the past 50 years, Tanzania tried to explore coal in collaboration with multinational mining companies, but with no significant results .

The Mchuchuma project will help the mining sector in the country since most gold mine sector relies on fuel-fired plants as they had already connected to the national grid..

Tanzania needs more power plants to meet the rising demand occasioned by growing demand from the expanding mining sector.

Three great lakes African nations in agreement to monitor wildlife movements

THREE AFRICAN COUNTRIES IN THE GREAT LAKES REGION HAVE LAUNCHED A MULTIMILLION DOLLAR JOINT WILDLIFE TRACKING AND MONITORING AGREEMENT.

Conservation Feature By Leo Odera Omolo In Kisumu City.

Three African states in the Great Lakes region have agreed to launch a joint project for monitoring of the movement of wildlife across their common borders.

The tripartite agreement between Uganda, Rwanda and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), involves the special and rare wild animal species that attract a lot of tourists from abroad, bringing in millions of dollars in foreign exchange.

The move, the three countries explained, is in order to have a coordinated approach to the management of contagious diseases, conservation of protected areas, and sharing out of tourism revenues.

The agreement is part of a long-term strategic plan to trans-boundary co-operation agreement reached in 2006 between three countries.

The agreement, however, is not legally binding, but forms the basis for recognition by the three governments of collaboration efforts that are currently on-going, including the setting up of, and co-coordinating other efforts that would eventually see a reduction in conflict between the three countries over wildlife resources.

The USD 92 million plan-to be funded by among other donors, the European Union and the United States International Development Agency {USAID}, entails conservation of biodiversity and other natural and cultural heritage across boundaries.

The areas to be covered are the protected Volcano National Park in Rwanda, Mgahinga Gorrila National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Rwenzori Mountain National Park, Kibale National Park all in Uganda, and the famous Virunga National Park in the DR Congo,

The monitoring component, according to an article in the current edition of the influential EASTAFRICAN weekly, is aimed at implementing the agreement clauses on transport, and sharing of revenues accruing from wildlife. For instance, one gorilla family from Uganda recently crossed into Rwanda after they were habituated, but Uganda will still benefit from the revenues accruing from that family.

According to the agreement ,the countries will share tourism revenue on a 50-50 basis as well as engage in research, and design of information management program.

“We shall ensure that we do not lose revenue through monitoring and research on a daily basis. We have to know where our groups of animals are. We already have a group of staff looking out,” Mr Moses was quoted by newspapers as saying.

Due to shared ecosystem, wild animals are known to cross between Rwanda and DR Congo or DR Congo and Uganda, with elephants and gorillas being the wild migratory heards. But gorillas are being, by far easier to monitor their activates, because game rangers from the Uganda Wildlife Authority trek the park daily. On the other hand, a number of elephants have been fitted with computerized collars which are monitored at the UWA headquarters in Kampala on daily basis.

“We even know when our collared animal is in danger, when it is hurt or has been taken ill “, Lilian Nsubuga of the UWA was quoted as saying. She disclosed that Rwanda and the DR Congo are also operating similar method of wildlife monitoring system.

Mountain gorilla tracking has continued to be the most popular in the three countries and continues to fetch the countries millions of dollars in foreign exchange through tourism.

Last year, Uganda earned USD 225 million from the apes, a figure that experts says could have been much higher If that country had vigorously promoted the primates through intensive worldwide publicity.

In a first case involving the three countries, similar charges have been imposed for gorilla tracking by their respective wildlife authorities. Gorilla tracking now costs USD 500 per day, per person and USD 270 for one to track a primate family of chimpanzees.

The three countries, however, have to know how many times a family has been tracked in order to work out he shares.

Other animals that often crosse borders include monkeys, chimpanzees, buffaloes, elephants and small and large antelopes with each of the animal groups attracting a different fees for tracking.

“We have agreed that visitors should see the animals wherever they are. If a group of habituated gorillas cross into Rwanda, visitors in Rwanda can track them there, but Uganda and Rwanda should share the tracking fees on 50-50 basis,”, said Mr. Wafula.

The three countries have also agreed to work out benefits of wildlife conservation and management to the surrounding communities, who are the main partners in the conservation efforts.

Among the priorities for community benefits is the provision of clean water to the communities living around Virunga National Park.

Thanks Judy,

This is what I have been talking about and the reason people including my grandmother are fighting me. We here at home and elsewhere have got to be extremely carefull and cautious about anyone who seeks information about us.

My grandmother and others are naive and do not appreciate the dynamics you mention and their ramifications. I on the other hand will not tolerate nonesense.

Sally Jacobs was here earlier and I sent her packing; now she is harrassing my mother in England. Farah Stockman was here on Saturday and now I know what she is up to thanks to you.

Jogi paro ni wafuo.

To Whom it May Concern,

I have received the following information requiring your earliest attention and execution. These are anticipated reporters working on behalf of special interest groups with fictitious motivated interests.
Farah Stockman is a foreign policy reporter for the Boston Globe in the Washington Bureau. She covers the U.S. Foreign Affairs and National Political Issues. She covers the U.S. Department of State focusing on U.S. Foreign Policy and International Affairs. Before moving to the Washington Bureau, she was a Metro Reporter at the Globe. She can be reached at an the following address 1130 Connecticut Avenue Nw, Suite 520 Washington DC. 20036. Telephone 202 857 5121 Cell No. 202 369 6644. Her email address: fstockman@globe.com. We have been informed she is the daughter of Joseph Farah Chief Executive Editor-in-Chief of WND, who had put up the Billboard in Pennsylvania Rd. with fake information that “Obama was not Born in America”

On 29th August last Friday 2009, she went to Kenya to spy and investigate to confirm if there are any changes in Kogello. She went with other two Kenyans from the USA, one is a Kikuyu by tribe and the other a Mkamba who accompanied her as her body guards. We have received information that Sarah Satchet & Sally Jacobs both from the Globe, have previously been involved with investigating the Obama family at Kogello, where they undertook some un-authorized falsehood information stagemanaged as interviews with Grandmother Mama Sara and also went around the the Village Market to interview local folks there. This kind of behavior is assumed and purported to be insultive and provocative by the villagers, and it is thought to be a mission to slander U.S. President Obama. It is believed that Sarah Satchet and Sally Jacobs are equally involved in the same mission, who previously went to Kogello to gather information and who also collected old photos of the Obama family containing history for unconfirmed reports.

This sends very alarming signal to both the community and the family to mean that the Obama’s family issues and domestic privacy is not respected and is being invaded with Special Interest Groups with intentions to scandalize and defame the Obama family. It also means that the US Ambassador Mr. Ranneberger is not taking his work seriously when he allow such special interest groups to go around disrespecting US President Obama with hidden agenda to slander and demonize character of the family members in the homestead of the late father of the President of United States of America, who is equally respected and honored as a Leader of a New World Order.

On behalf of Global Kenyan Community and as a voice of reason, we would like the Obama family in Kenya to be accorded and guaranteed the honor, respect and security it befits them including family privacy it deserves and that they should be accorded an organized Diplomatic protocol with Scheduling of all visitations in the Homestead.

We are saddened that both the Coalition Government of Kenya and the US Ambassador Ranneberger are both not doing what they should do to protect Obama’s family privacy from malice and slander and from external pecking (pecksniffery) invasion. This is a sad state of affair and quite embarrasing.

Sincerely,

Judy Miriga
