RAILA AND RUTO ON AN EPIC WAR OF REPUTATION

Dear Sir/Madam,

I dare say that there is no love lost between William Ruto and Raila Odinga. They were and are still allies out of convenience. And, there is no denying that both have so much in common. Retired president Moi still writhes in anger at their combinatorial analysis that rendered his 2002 presidential choice kaput. Some analysts opine that both Ruto and Raila bear the terseness and calculated simplicity that they use to dumbfound friend and foe alike. Others view them as a bullies of the Left Bank who are always ready to twist the milksop`s arm. Both have rarely stayed in a party to fight a war to its logical conclusion. As many have extolled them as they have besmirched them. For those who extol them, they view them as bullfighters par excellence whose forays many would dare not venture. Knowing them, many would be least startled that they have now locked horns or so it appears. But before they hastily shout “aluta continua”, it would be prudent that both Raila and Ruto take the counsel of Ernest Hemingway. He said that “Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left in the fighter`s honor.”

That both Ruto and Raila are literally bullfighters is not in doubt. That both have intricate moves and prowess that they employ in vanquishing their foes is still not in doubt. If indeed they are on a warpath to attain the top honors then theirs is a mouth-watering war of reputation. I am calling it a war because it is a series of battles. Thomas Green etal opine that, “Reputation is the cornerstone of power. Through reputation alone you can intimidate and win; once you slip, however, you are vulnerable, and will be attacked on all sides. Make your reputation unassailable. Always be alert to potential attacks and thwart them before they happen. Meanwhile, learn to destroy your enemies by opening holes in their own reputations. Then stand aside and let public opinion hang them.”

So what are the battle fronts that make up this war of reputation? You will agree with me that these would be based on their individual stance on issues of national and international import, their respective coterie and lastly their abilities to transcend ethnic and age barriers.

Ruto has frantically albeit unsuccessfully, tried wrecking havoc on Raila`s reputation on Post Election Violence and Mau respectively but public and international opinion has in both instances favored the latter. Raila on his part has successfully portrayed himself as a selfless leader who will risk losing his political clout if only to place himself at the service of the nation and indeed the world! His articulation of issues of import has earned him political enemies as well as both local and international accolades. Many have likened him to the proverbial lizard that sought to jump from the highest Iroko tree to fall flat on its belly and survive to tell the tale.

As to one`s coterie, it has been said that if one walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then one must be a duck. Whereas it is difficult to pinpoint exactly Raila`s coterie, the same cannot be said of Ruto who has signaled to all and sundry that he doesn`t mind working with the YK92 retread! I hold it that Ruto cannot hope to amass political capital with dubious characters that even the most naïve among us would have no iota of doubt, that given chance, they can only spend our country into oblivion. I put it that in such company Ruto stands to gather personal embarrassment than popularity.

On transcending the ethnic and age barrier, Ruto satiates himself in the company of ethno-centric youthful legislators who have nothing in common with Kenyans who are just smarting from the disastrous effects of PEV. These are the political barkers with no political idealism of whatever persuasion. Raila on the other hand is tirelessly working to endear himself to this disappointed and disillusioned youthful voting block.

From the foregoing, it is crystal clear that Ruto needs to change tact. And he must do it quickly. As Richard Bentley said in reference to Alexander Popes, “I hold it as certain that no man was ever written out of reputation but by himself.”

DIVISIONISM IN KENYA

DIVISIONISM IN KENYA
From: Alex Kiprono Maiyo
Thu, Dec 10, 2009

It is disheartening when you go through the blogs by Kenyans. They are laden with divisionism, which is a pointer that we still have a long way to go to overcome the evil.

In school I was taught by Kikuyus, Kalenjins, Maasais, Luos, Merus,
Swahilis, Arabs, Indians and Europeans. Pastors from various tribes and races have also ministered to me. I also shared classroom with students from various tribes. To me they have always been the same. They equally do good and wrong.

However, nobody has explained to me why it has to be different when it comes to political leadership, where we are told some tribes cannot produce presidents, or when a person commits a mistake as an individual, he drags the entire tribe into the offense.

I am just tired of this type of politics where if an individual, a Kikuyu
wrongs me, a Kalenjin, I shout that the Kikuyus have wronged the kalenjins and the Kalenjins should teach Kikuyu lessons. Many times, it is not even committing a wrong against one. There are many instances when one is caught in the wrong, and an attempt to address the wrong is fought by inciting tribesmen.

On comparing notes with others, I have learnt that what happens at the national level is a replica of what happens at the local level, where the clan comes before anything else. Indeed, most projects undertaken through CDF fail because of clanism.

As Kenya makes a new constitution, would you please pass on my contribution that DIVISIONISM at any level need to be criminalized, to discourage tribalism and clanism.

I urge all of you to go slow on divisionism. POLE POLE NDUGU ZANGUNI.

Dreams of a Kenyan economic refugee

Fuambo Janyandito

Yes people, politics and endless tribal power games is counterproductive and verily so.

The PM has advised that we rely on science and technology to develop our country. It really does not require rocket science to rely on science and technology. Instead of us using the internet day in – day out, inciting fellow citizens to hate one another, and feeding them on cheap propaganda, let use this technology to sing and shout about investment opportunities in different areas of Kenya.

Let us woo dollar laden visitors to come and see for themselves the rich culture and beautiful landscapes in our motherland.

Let them come and see that a Luo can actually marry and live with a Kalenjin and a Kalenjin can actually marry and live with a Kikuyu.

A time has come when we should stop blaming the government for all our woes.

With good road network, land, electricity at the disposal of our people and banks willing to extend loans, in addition to sons and daughters in diaspolands, what do you want the government to do for our people?

Kindly invest those dollars in agriculture, agribusiness, fishing, tourist
facilities, and telecommunication kiosks and our people will improve their
lot.

Diaspo people, facilitate technology transfers from US, India and wherever you are instead of remaining chained to tribal politics back home.

Our son in office mentality will never take anybody anywhere. Instead,
people should be told to invest their knowledge and resources for a better tomorrow and that politics is not the most lucrative profession in Kenya.

I long to see fish processing plants on Muhuru, Sori, Usenge and Mbita
employing our youths. I long to see model high schools in each constituency, model primary schools in each location, model village polytechnics and workshops and model middle level professional colleges in every district.

I long to see more enthusiasm in having higher learning institutions and
research centers in MIT, Rongo; ICIPE Mbita and community development NGOs working in the remotest of the villages.

I dream of a time when with good qualifications, I would be comfortable
down at the village, discharging my professional duties without imposing a self exile to diaspoland on myself.

Let me finish by asking: who among you is not an economic refugee?

Plagiarism and Intellectual Dishonesty

Plagiarism and Intellectual Dishonesty
Charles Makakala Jr

Remember the time you read something in this forum that struck you as very professional? Try googling it and 3 out of 4 times you will discover that it is wholesale plagiarism. At least that is my experience. The one time that was the exception I discovered that the person that wrote it is actually a newspaper columnist. Very good. But unfortunately that is not always the case…

(Plagiarism, as defined in the 1995 Random House Compact Unabridged Dictionary, is the “use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one’s own original work.” (Wikipedia).)

Now, I understand that ‘Plagiarism’ is a new concept for many of us, in fact, the first time I heard that word 11 years ago, the whole class laughed. The word sounded funny. But the idea it represents is not a laughing matter.

It is not always easy to know other people’s intentions- sometimes a person is simply trying to contribute to the discussion, or they don’t know any better. Sometimes he intentionally wants the forum members to think that those are his own original words. Whatever the intention, using anybody’s work without acknowledging it is plagiarism and it is intellectually unethical and unacceptable.

For those of us who are of the opinion that a society’s culture is the reason for its development or as is the case with Africa, underdevelopment, this discussion takes a completely different perspective. I remember the time when I was a student at Mlimani where students casually copied each others work and cheated in exams- and easily got away with it: apart from graduating from University using dishonest means and getting great jobs afterwards, these students actually learn that cheating is the best way to go ahead of everyone else. It was amazingly easy to cheat and get away with it… And this is how a society will collapse under the weight of its own useless culture.

(One student I know graduated with a Degree in Economics- and this student is now a manager somewhere. As a third year student he could hardly formulate one sentence in English without everyone around bursting out with laughter- forget about the fact that he never picked his books unless there was an exam within 12 hours. How that person could ever graduate- thanks to the A-factor (the African Factor which needs to be considered in many decisions and issues, according to one former Western mentor of mine)).

Intellectual honesty, and honesty in general, is a very important element towards producing a progressive society. This is something that needs to be a deep-seated conviction in all of us- especially children and young people. Now, considering the fact that this forum includes members from different backgrounds, and that we need to establish a firm intellectual culture of honesty and responsibility: I move that we publicly DENOUNCE any contribution that can be proved to use another person’s work without acknowledging it. I also propose that any contribution that is a wholesale copy of another author’s work- even if acknowledged- should also not be permitted.

I hope that these measures will help to protect the young members of this forum from trying to acquire cheap popularity that has no substance in it. (I actually argued against publicly exposing plagiarists in another forum but considering how casually some members do that in this forum, I think stricter measures are needed in this case.)

Charles.

After Luos, No Tribe Wants the Opposition Job

WHATEVER IS GOOD FOR THE GOOSE IS ALSO GOOD FOR US. KENYA HAS NO OPPOSITION. KENYAN’S HAD DEVELOPED A CHRONIC DEPENDENCY ON LUOS TO BE THE OPPOSITION, WHILE THEY ARE BUSY SERVING THE GOVERNMENT OF THE DAY ONE OR TWO INDIVIDUALS FROM OTHER TRIBES SPORADICALLY WHO HAD JOINED WITH THE LUOS BUT THE OBLIGATION HAD BELONGED TO LUOS AS A TRIBE. NOW EVERYBODY IS DROPPING THE BALL AND LUOS ARE SAYING , ENOUGH OF THIS AGONY TO SAVE KENYANS WHO NEVER APPRECIATE! WE HAVE DONE IT FOR 50 YEARS, LET’S TAKE TURNS.

1. I THOUGHT THE KAMBAS WERE GOING TO DO IT WITH KALONSO BUT THEY DID NOT.

2. KALENJINS MADE IT CLEAR THAT THEY ARE NOT USED TO STAYING IN THE COLD AND THEY WILL DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO BE IN THE GOVERNMENT.

3. LUYHAS HAVE ONE EGG IN OPPOSITION AND ANOTHER ONE WITH THE GOVERNMENT.

4. KISSIIS WOULD FOLLOW A SIMILAR MODEL.

5. THE COAST HAS NEVER UNITED FOR ANYTHING, IT IS WHICH SIDE OF BREAD IS BUTTERED.

6. NORTH EASTERN, APART FROM THERE VERY FEW NUMBERS, TEND TO LEAN TOWARDS THE GOVERNMENT FOR OBVIOUS REASONS.

7. KIKUYUS HAVE THE NUMBERS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE BUT BELIEVE IT IS THEIR TIME TO EAT, YOU CAN’T BLAME THEM. THEY WILL BE VIBRANT OPPOSITION IN 2012, YOU WILL SEE THE EMERGENCE OF ACTIVISM AND FIERY CHURCHES.

LUOS GIVE YOURSELVES A HIGH FIVE. 50 YEARS IS ENOUGH. LET US ALL SHARE RESPONSIBILITY.

Message from Dr. Fred Masinde

Dear brethrens and sisters from Gikuyu community:

Uhuru Kenyatta’s father, Jomo Kenyatta, grabbed an estimated 500,000 acres of public land. Most of this land is in Central Kenya which means that the land belongs to the Gikuyu Community. I want you to listen to me carefully.

Please DEMAND that Uhuru Kenyatta surrenders this land effective immediately. This land is enough to host all the 250,000 displaced Gikuyus from RV. In fact if Uhuru surrenders this land, each displaced Gikuyu will have 2 acres of land (enough to build a home and grow food crops!).

I do not need to remind you that the land grabbed by Kenyatta was YOUR land.

Thank you.

Dr. Fred S Masinde.

Githongo

Hon. Moses Agwambo!!

Much and sincere congratulations to you and the entire Pentagon brigade for bringing PEACE and RESPECT to Kenya’s Wanjiku people. We will not be regarded as second class people by the Mount Kenya Mafia brigades from now on. May the good Lord bestow you with good health and wisdom as you continue your trip to deliever Wanjiku to the promised land as Moses the great did to the children of Israel. We all know that the task ahead is not going to be an easy one, but we will always lend our support to you to the end of the turnnel. It’s not a one man war and I call upon you to bring Kenya’s anti-corruption HERO, Mr. John Githongo back home and appoint him the Director of Kenya Anti-corruption Commission (KACA). He has colourful credentials and has already been interviewed for the job which he passed several years ago. Such are the type of people we need to run our country and not handpicked illiterate relatives who can’t even append their own autographs on public documents.

As corruption is going to be your number one task, you need someone like Githongo in your administrative lineup in order to succeed. I know that, it’s expensive to secure his life in Kenya as Me-Chuki Wa Nyuki’s boys (Mungiki) will be baying for his blood, but that will be nothing as compared to the billions of Kenya shillings which might be “siphoned” out by these crooks. Do not give them even the slightest opportunity – remember, ther are still accessable to Wanjiku’s property. People say that “weka pesa, upate pesa”. Please bring our Hero home, provide him with some body armor in addition to human security and let him do the job.

Thank you for your struggles to make Kenya a better place to reside on the globe. May God bless Kenya and Africa.

MY PROPHESY TO DR. ALFRED MUTUA WILL COME TO PASS

Dr. Mutua

Now that the patriotic Kenyans have reclaimed their country back, please don’t go back to Saudi Arabia without bading us good bye. It is regretable that you betrayed your country and your peasant parents to satisfy your stomach.

It is very sad that Kenya had to bleed to this extent because of people like you. While Dedan Kimathi, Bildad Kagia, Koitalel arap Samoei, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and a few other selfless Kenyans fought for the emancipation of the Kenyans from the colonial yoke, and died without recognition, the home guards and sell-outs like Simeon Nyachae, John Michuki, Jomo Kenyatta, Daniel arap Moi, Mwai Kibaki et al  engaged in stealing and grabbing sphree that broke the world record. The Ndungu’ Land Report chronicled the damage that has been done to the Kenya people by the so-called Kenya’s first family.

Dr. Mutua, just like the days of those who grabbed during the era of Kenyatta and Moi  are coming to an end, those who misused their power like you during Kibaki’s misrule will account for thier inactions. My “friend”, as I told you during the election campaign of 2007, your days in Kenya are over. Please start packing your bags so that you can go where you fit.Unfortunately, you will run, but you will never hide from the arms of true justice.

It does not matter how far you will run since the reality is that you will never hide yourself from your past misdeeds. The rule of law will finally catch up with people like you who abused power with impunity.

May God’s mercy be with  you wherever you will be.

CRAZY, CRAZY KENYA

Is Kenya on fire? If yes, are you feeling that super heat? If yes, what are you doing to cool the heat? Are you just sitting there waiting for what will come out of the mediation team? Expect less, my friend, in terms of peace, because for peace to prevail, it must start with us–me and my jirani–but in case your jirani flew away for his/her life, do you expect him/her back? Can you come back to the same place you saw death to live?

On the other, hand don’t expect war. The best thing is to pray each and every time, having in mind that everything happens for a reason. God has got the solution. Leaders must show us the way by behaving responsibly and we are going to follow.

Borrowing a Leaf

In 2002 the Hon.Musalia Mudavadi lost his parliamentary seat, being the then vice president, KANU quickly nominated him to parliament.  He called a press conference in his sabatia constituency and duly informed the sabatia electorate that he respected their decision not to send him to parliament.  He then turned down KANUs nomination, stating that he wont go to parliament “by force”. If his people wanted him at home,  then he was ready to do just that – he thus stayed at home. Having been voted out Hon. Julia Ojiambo is now in court, she seeks to get to bunge with or without the backing of Funyula voters.   Anything she can learn from her brother Musalia? I wish Musikari Kombo could also borrow a leaf from Mudavadi and decline the nomination he just recieved. The ball is now in their court.

CATHOLIC HIERARCHY BEING CHEATED

NTV VIDEO COMMENTARY BLOG

Only Pro Nuncio Lebaupin can save Kenya. The Catholic Church has to withdraw its support (in public) for this extremely hidden devil pretending to be a devout Catholic (with a second hidden wife Wambui in Lavington – right next to the Catholic Strathmore University!). Even Njue tommorrow would become a bald bell playing Hare Krishna if that would enable certain Kikuyus to ‘eat’ the Rift Valley. These devils are ‘pretend’ Catholics, only the Pope is sleeping.

Where are we going as Kenyans!!!

I know this is not the best time to raise a controversial discussion! But as a concerned citizens of the lovely Nation of Kenya we need to ask serious questions???? Before doing that it shld be known to all that read this article that Kibaki cannot be compared to Raila in the national and international arena on issues of democracy and political liberation of a
people. So it leaves me in a state waiting for the day we will ever compare the two when serious minds are engaged. Nevertheless, all said and less done, we have to appreciate that there are leaders that we impose on ourselves and they lead as eventually to places we dont have any idea of there whereabouts.

I tend to think that a leader should be capable of sharing with the people he or she intends to lead!! Share in what??? He /she should share the same geographical and specific aspects of life and societies dynamics. It is true that for instance that ‘Education is power.’ Please, we don’t need an angel to tell us how our community the Luos have deteroriated as to education.

My simple reasoning is that poverty has stricken us from all the corners. And education is expensive!!! But what do the Luo leaders do to address this economical issues??? If I say nothing it will be a lie but they are totally doing little to help solve the situation.

The few of us that proceed to higher learning instituons don’t bring back the fruits of Education to the society. Please note that there are people who are exceptionally dedicated to help but they are like two drops of water in the Lake.

I can write till the next day, or otherwise!! Don’t forget that by all means we should look at issues from a sober perspective and fight poverty away from our homes then we will have the knowledge and power it takes to change the world. That I beleive could help us.

We need each other in one peace and that’s the way it is.
