PNU jeers at ODM Cabinet threat after rigging the Kamukunji

Folks,

ECK is still an infested dog together with the Police of Kenya.

How can they be trusted at any rate? Why didn’t the judiciary system and the parties agree to an independent returning officers? Why were there police presence and interferences? How can the result be free and fare to the ODM whose candidate was gunned down eliminated in a cold blooded scenario to create position vacant so for the PNU to take over? who can accept this kind of manouvre? How can PNU justify this act with an eminent theft of election result of 2007 pact with hooliganism, thuggery and police gear combat infiltrated with Mungiki giving PNU the victory in a hooked jammed coup?

Can Raila step up and order the Minister incharge of Security Saitoti to explain why he let the dogs loose to create chaos and insecurity? Is it so difficult to clean and put new characters staff employees in ECK for purposes of peace and human rights? Why do the Grand Coalition Government want to force International Community to step in and take charge under humanitarian and Human Rights conditions to clean the house? If this happens all of the top leaders stand to loose. Will you please act and act fast, because we cannot afford to let Kenya and its Nationals to fall apart. If force will be the answer that is exactly what will be instituted.

Thanks,

Judy Miriga

PNU jeers at ODM Cabinet threat
BY JUDIE KABERIA

The Party of National Unity has scoffed at a decision by its coalition counterpart Orange Democratic Movement’s that it would complain to the Cabinet about the Kamukunji vote-tallying fiasco.

Addressing the press at the party headquarters Wednesday, Cabinet Minister Beth Mugo and Simon Mbugua who was declared winner in Kamukunji, said their opponents should instead seek legal redress.

“It’s high time ODM (Orange Democratic Movement) learnt how to accept facts and numbers when they face defeat instead of peddling lies and issuing threats and abuses. If they are unsatisfied, they should go to court, taking this issue to the Cabinet is not democracy” said Mugo, adding that the top Executive organ should not be involved in party matters.

Mbugua, on his part, argued that he was the clear winner in the poll, even by the time the tallying exercise was annulled by the Electoral Commission late last year.

He cited a “commanding lead” in the 135 ballot boxes that had been tallied, saying the court only directed the ECK to complete tallying of the remaining 22 boxes.

On Tuesday, ODM Secretary General Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o vowed to raise the Kamukunji issue with the Cabinet, alleging that no re-tallying had been done to determine the winner on Monday.

A number of ODM legislators have also called on their leadership to pull out of the Grand Coalition after the debacle.

But Mugo criticised the calls, saying the coalition was formed to re-unite the country following the crisis earlier this year.

She challenged the ODM leaders should work towards making it a success to ensure the country fully heals and reconciles.

MASSIVE CORRUPTION ROCKS AGROCHEMICAL FACTORY

By Shem Kosse

The Agrochemical factory in Muhoroni is allegedly loosing millions of shillings in a well orchestrated syndicate involving the top management, the factory’ audit report reveals.

According to the recent audit report carried by the company’ auditor Mr. Tum, unearthed that the head of Effluent Treatment Plant(ETP)Mr. Mutuku has been receiving millions of shillings from an organization known as Osienala.

Interestingly the money, report indicates, that is being wired to Mutuku personal account.

Tum, who uncovered the graft, has since been fired by the factory’ high-level officials who are said to be the chief architects and beneficiaries of the cartel’ malpractices bedeviling the once vibrant outfit.

Workers union on the other hand also took issue with the ETP head saying that the ETP department is consisting of ghost workers whose services are being engaged to dis-large the ponds which in return the company honours and pays.

And yet they had at one time raised the matter with the management which they say appears to be reluctant to embark on necessary remedial measures to curb.

“For how long will all these corruptions of the highest order continue to take its toll with the management presiding over?” quipped the disgruntled workers and union officials who sought for anonymity.

Further, the enraged workers wondered why top cream officials are blatantly doing all these to a government investment of such a magnitude. They urged the Prime minister, Raila Odinga to crack the whip.

The relentless efforts to the management to comment on the matter proved futile by the time of going to the press.

The company’ sleaze exposure is coming barely a month after the PM sent packing the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) managing director, Abdalla Mahru on grounds of incompetence, inefficiency and corruption.

The move has sparked scathing criticism against the PM from a cross section of coast Mps.They say that Raila overstepped his mandate and that the slot is regionally there’s, to head. The Langata legislator brushed off the utterances has tribal and people who are still leaving in the past.

KIPSIGIS CLAN ELDERS AGAINST MANIPULATION BOMET BY ELECTION

KIPSIGIS CLAN ELDERS WARNED AGAINST DEPLOYING OLD AND OUT OF DATE KANU DICTATORIAL TACTICS IN BOMET PARLIAMENTARY BY ELECTION AND TO TOE ODM LINE.

By Leo Odera Omolo

THE Forthcoming by elections in Bomet Parliamentary constituency seemed to have attracted a lot o vest interests from the various stakeholders, party politics, clan issues and cultural affairs.

Last week end a meeting of sub-clan elders was held at Kaparuso home of the late Road Minister Kipkalia Kones in Long’isa Division of Bomet district. The elder came exclusively from the Kapbecherek sub-clan, which has a mixture of Kisiis and Kipsigis blood.

The late Kones like the late Prof. Jonathan Ng’eno also a former Road Minister during the Moi eras is a member of the Kapbecherek sub-clan. And the weekend meeting was meant to drum up support for Kones widow Mama Beatric Kones as the sole candidate in the impending by election scheduled for September 25,2008.

The endorsement of Mrs Kones by the clan elders has sparked off scathing criticism with the ODM branches in Kipsigis region, and also by the electorate who dismissed it as “Out of date KANU dictatorial tactics of handpicking up candidates without giving the electorate their democratic rights of picking up the right candidate of their own choice.”

ODM leaders in Kipsigis region termed it “Unwarranted and uncalled for” saying it was too early for the clan elders to come out in full support of Kones widow Beatrice. They should have waited until after the ODM primaries. Their action tantamount to dictatorial tendencies of the past. “Most of the elders involved in the reported delibarations were people who played divide and rule tactics against the Kipsigis community during the KANU days and as such should retire from politics honourably and go to rest.

Twop elders members of the Kapbecherek clan who include a former Kericho Mayor Ayub Siele, who lives in Kapsoid in Belgut and former chairman of the County Council of Kipsigis MZEE Stanley Turgut who was once a member of the defunct rift Valley Regional Assembly representing Kipsigis were quoted by a section of the press as having issued the statement endorsing Mrs Kones candidature.

But the sentiment expressed by the clan elders has met with vehement opposition from across section of Bomet residents .It has also caused jittery with the youths who felt the elders were out for mischievous politics of imposing a candidate on the Bomet electorate.”

.”If M rs Kones is the right candidate, then let her come out in her true picture and campaigned herself with the view of convincing and winning the support of the voters. But she must not deploy the services of proxies, particularly the elderly men who are tired and too old to give proper direction to the youth,” said Benjamin Kilach, a Bomet ODM operative.

The action of the elders is a mockery to the tenets of democratic principles, and they must be told in a clear-cut language that the days of handpicking up parliamentary candidates in Kipsigis are long gone,” said another politician who wished his name to remain anonymous.

In Kipsigi tradition and culture, political heritance is alient. Each and every candidate should be treated equally, and there must not be any special treatment to any particular aspirant, opined one civic leader in Bomet County Council

Meanwhile information emerging from the ground says, the by-elections to fill the vacant Bomet seat which was left by the late Kones who perished in an aircraft accident in June is expected to be a bruising battle between the two political families, which have dominated the constituency ever since uit was created in the early 1970s., thus pitting the Salat and Kones families.

But this time around Mr. Sammy Sigei who used to be Kones chief campaigner is likely create a swing votes. Sigei who is married to Mrs Ida Raila Odinga, accord to the various sources could create ripples as his popularity is said to be on upward trend.

However, Nick Salat remained a hot cake. He is the darling of the youth. He is the darling of both youth and women folks due to his well cherished generosity. The former legislator is accessible person who is credited for treating his constituents equally irrespective of their stations within the society.

Equally the majority of the electorate wanted him to return to Parliament so that he could complete some of the unfinished projects, which he had initiated while he was the MP for the area between 2002 and 2007.

Salat, however, is facing an uphill task to find a suitable political party to sponsore his candidature. He is a KANU stalwart and a confidant of both Mzee Moi and his favourite son Gideon Moi. But this time around he should avoid using KANU ticket. Perhaps, if he choose to stand on UDM ticket, he will definitely make it to Parliament.Selling KANU to the electorate in Bomet would not be an easy exercise due to numerous accusation and counter allegation against the party of Mama na Baba.

At the same time Mrs Kones is said to be unselleable commodity in Bomet politics. Sources privy to the family before the late Kones death says he relations with the late husband had strained due to various domestic issues and this could have adverse effect on her

The ODM should be equally advised that it would not be an easy job to convince the votersd to elect Mrs Kones. And as such they should allow all the aspirants to participate in the party’s primaries and pick the popular candidate without settling only on one aspirant.

Other aspirants, who are equally said to be popular with the votes, and could sprung a surprise include Dr. Paul Chirchir, Mr Steve Mutai, a Ketepa Manager based in Kericho, Mr Sammy Maina and Prof. Wilson Sitonik.

Also in the race is Ms Lila Siele, a former career diplomat who is said to be very popular with women folks and intellectuals alike.

As far as party politics are concerned in Bomet, the ODM is the party of the day. But the party popularity has been jolted with the recent draconian government directives issued by the Prime Minister Raila Odinga ordering thousands of Kipsigis settlers to vacate Mau Complex by October. The majority of the affected squatters are members of Kipsigis families whose original homes are in Bomet. The issue has had negative effect on the ODM, especially considering the fact that the PM is the de facto leader of the party.

Many Kipsigis believes Raila Odinga has already abandoned their community despite they having voted for him on man-to-man basis during the 2007 general elections and was now favouring the people of the Mt. Kenya region. They cite the recent appointment of Chris M. Obure the Minister for Works as the acting Roads Minister, arguing that there was no point in appointing Obure on an acting capacity as if Kones was suspended, and yet the former Minister is dead and will never return again. Raila and Kibaki should have considered one of the Kipsigis MPs for direct appointment to the cabinet, they argue.

It is also imperative to take a note that Kipsigis and the Kisiis are arch-tribal enemies from the time immemorable, therefore by appoi9nting a Kisii to act on a docket left vacant by a dead Kipsigis is considered as a bad omen and a stigma top the community.

OPEN LETTER TO THE INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE

Dear Mr. JaCQUES ROGGE,

You may not have heard about my 10th great grandfather, Ragem who frequently appears to me with insight to issues all around the world, but in particular, Kenya.

First, I am ordered to congratulate Michael Phelps for his achievement as the 1st person to amass 11 gold medals your esteemed competition, and still poised to pick up others.

During these Olympic spirit times however, I regret to inform that he has finally revealed to me that the current Olympic sports not fair to us.

If you do not agree, tell me why there are over 34 gold medals in swimming alone, whereas running, jumping, shot put, discuss, javelin, walking etcetra, have a combined total of 47?

Just like swimming has, breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle, medley, butterfly, synchronized, so should running have backwards, left sideways, right sideways, crisscross, forwards, bare-feet, one-shoe, one-legged, to make it even for us to catch up.

Oh yea, running should also have 25m, 50m, 75m 100m 125m, 150m, 200m Pot-On-Head, 400m, 4000m Steeplechase, 6000m Back-Pack-On-Back, et al.

Personally, I encourage the OIC to immediately implement Ajua, Banyo, Sugar-Cane-Chewing, Gololii, Blada, Tapo, Mkebe, Shake, Kamare, Hot-Tea-Drinking, Cow-Milking, Goat-Skinning, Hair-Plaiting among many others to increase the number of sports and also the number of older adult participation. No no no, we wont have to wait all these years since 1896, for NASA to invent Speedo – the carbon fiber water resistant swimwear for records to break.

I do not know about you Mr. JaCQUES ROGGE, but until the OIC levels the playing field and sports, the most of the Olympics sports are not really for us all. To separate and dedicate some sports for Winter just complicates the competition for us further.

Please, visit Africa and research what sports are for us by us (FUBU), and integrate them for the world to compete in, in the Olympic Spirit.

And talking about breaking records, ours was broken already. It is F. C. GORMAHIA By Juma Toto & THE HODI BOYS’ BAND. I challenge someone to patch a good copy on Youtube, since I am not sure Mr. JaCQUES ROGGE would include this one in the 2012 games.

Regardless, my 10th great grandfather, Ragem concurs that these games bring us together and hold us together closer than the World Wide Web binds us, hence must continue.

Is Kenya Ready for A Woman President?

You’ve heard it said that any Kenyan above thirty five and with certain attainments is capable and free to run for President of East Africa’s most strategic nation, and no doubt the region’s strongest economy. In the books, and thank God it is so, that’s indeed the case. But in life things never fall neatly in place like water down a predictable line of weak resistance. On the contrary, the laws we place in our books are merely a road-map to what’s possible if goodwill were brought to bear. In that respect, our constitution has paved the way for the eventual realization of a dream. A dream to elect the first female president in Kenya. But will it ever happen? And just how soon?

When you slap a map of the world on the table and start pinpointing the nations that have been brave enough to experiment with the leadership female chief executives, you’ll be stunned by just how few they are. In Africa, we have Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson in Liberia. After years of men running that nation down, spilling blood and plundering the nation’s resources, this Harvard-educated lady took over and brought back sanity into the affairs of government. I’ve watched her at rallies in her devastated nation and seen how the adoring people of Liberia look up to her. I’ve seen children reach out to hold her hand, and I’ve seen her lean in to plant that cherished kiss on a child with dirt on their cheek. It’s just lovely to watch.

In neighbouring Uganda, Strongman Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, had the foresight to bring in East Africa’s first female vice president. You may argue that her powers were only limited, but you can’t argue with the symbolic importance of being the second most powerful person in that landlocked nation. What it did was to shatter a glass ceiling, as Hillary Clinton would say. It made the girls in Uganda realize that a woman could do anything men could do…and do it even better.

We’ve all heard about Britain’s Margaret Thatcher. This iron lady led her nation through the war with Argentina and actually won. Can you see in the eye of your mind Maggie sitting in that meeting, directing her commanders to draw a war plan, to present to her a plan of attack within days? Can you see her addressing the British people, telling them that the nation had to go to war over the Falk Islands? And finally watch as the British war planes drop bombs and subdue the Argentinians…all in the name of Margaret Thatcher. And lest you forget, the neat thing about a war planned by a lady is that care is taken to minimize collateral damage, which is another term for civilians caught up in the crossfire.

Back to Kenya. Are we ready for a woman president? When I look around, only two women at present seem like they could mount credible presidential campaigns. There’s Martha Karua and Charity Ngilu. Are they qualified? Yes, they are. But if we were to seriously assess their chances, what would Kenyans be looking for in order to feel comfortable with female leadership?

Here is what I’d be looking for.

1. Beauty. Hold on, hold on. Before you call me fickle, let me ask you this question. How would you like to watch the face of a woman who is not pretty for the next five years? Personally I’d like to watch on TV a pretty woman. It just makes it a lot easier when a hot mama is the chief executive, especially when she has to persuade the nation to do something drastic like budget cuts or go to war. So is Charity cute? Just look at her, man. She’s cute. How about Martha? Me thinks she’s another cutie. If Phil and Chris don’t think those two are beauties, tell me who is, guys.

2. Grit. What I mean here is toughness. In most traditional societies, men have always been wary of strong women. Women have always been cast as the fairer sex, people who were supposed to smile and look sweet. But you all know that Martha and Charity don’t play that game. Those women are tough. Just think back to the days of the grand bargain that gave us the coalition government. Do you remember how Martha was out there telling off foreign envoys? Do you remember how she took on Orengo and Ruto and all the big boys? How about Charity? Weren’t you impressed when she took on the Kalonzo wave in Ukambani and won? How about that day at the airport when she caught the VP trying to catch a government plane for a non official event? Didn’t you like it when she called him up on it and forced him to issue a statement? Yes, those two women are tough and ready to lead.

3. Sober and Pragmatic. Can a woman be tough and sober at the same time? Of course a woman can. I take it you’ve been impressed by the juggling act in Liberia, where Madam Sirleaf has synchronously shown her tough side by taking on male-dominated institutions and making them work for Liberia and at the same time presenting a softer, sweeter side to her burdened people. Okay, has Martha ever shown a sweeter side? Sure, haven’t you seen her smile? Haven’t you caught her dancing with the folks, her eyes sparkling with childlike joy? And lately haven’t you seen her try to get into alliances that are in sync with her presidential aspirations? How about Charity? What I’ve seen in her is a calculating, sober assessor of situations. I saw her walk out of Afya House on her terms. Saw her join the ODM Pentagon on her terms. And now she’s running her ministry with pragmatism and efficiency. So again, can these two women lead?

4. Communication. One of the areas where our leaders have fallen short is in communicating their policies and intentions to the people. President Kenyatta was a master of intrigue. He never let Kenyans know what he was up to. In fact, even when he died we couldn’t be told straight out that the president was dead. Moi was no better. To know what was on Moi’s mind, Kenyans had to listen to the pronouncements of people like Shariff Nassir, Mulu Mutisya and Kariuki Chotara. What a way to communicate! Now there’s Kibaki. Who the hell speaks for this President? Is it the perpetually hilarious Dr. Mutua or the super-secretive and assertive Muthaura? Whoever it is, they have done a lousy job. Now, has Martha communicated her intentions to the folks? Here is what she has said. I’m running for president in 2012. How clearer can a girl be? Charity has been equally succinct. Watch her as she talks to her teary-eyed staff on her last day at Afya. I will be back! again, how clearer can a girl be?

5. Faith. A president who doesn’t pray for his nation and for wisdom from God has no business leading a nation. It’s always nice watch a president pray. I liked it when Kenyatta was in a house of worship. I was moved whenever I saw Moi with a hymn book in hand, singing praises to the Lord. And I set my disagreements with Kibaki aside whenever he is before the throne of grace. Prayer is power. So do the two women I’ve been talking about pray? Yes, they do. But just imagine what it would mean for Kenyans to watch on Sunday TV as the president, a sweet motherly figure, kneels down in plea with God to bless Kenya. Don’t you long to see that day come?

I do.

But 2012 is years away. We have a chance to evaluate all our presidential candidates. I’d love to see Martha Karua give the boys a run for their money, become Kenya’s first female president. I’d love to see Charity Ngilu go all out to capture the presidency of Kenya and help us make positive history. That said, Kenyans are not going to elect somebody just because we yearn for female leadership. We are going to elect the best candidate out there.

Ladies, make 2012 your time to shine. If you don’t become president, you’ll have paved the way for the brave Kenyan girls who will come after you.

For Love of Country,

Sam Okello

Re: Nyanza Economic Forum

Folks,

William you have spoken well, I salute you sir!!

This is truely a written thought in many Luo’s minds. The way forward is to move on from this limbo not tomorrow but today. Let us all now utilize the skills and talents and the ability to gain what was lost centuries ago. Let us marshal small and big rich and poor leaders and performers in a boat sailing to Development Strategic Plan of Action.

I will start and hope others will follow and together you will hold my back when I weary. The Luo men are a hard shell nut, but I will try to start to marshal them to invitation for development projects in different locations in Nyanza, starting with Obunga in November 2008.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y_WlP2Dk4zE

For employment I stand to challenge His Excellency The Rt. Prime Minister Raila to start by employing atleast 10 professionals in his Prime Ministers Office which was recently created. I have heard people say The Rt. Hon. Prime Minister Raila is social and is good to Luos before he gets power, but when he does get to power, he gets drunk with power and forgets about the ladder not realizing he will need the ladder to climb down. What I say is, in leadership, people get so busy and occupied to a point they struggle to meet deadlines and in the process they take matters of utmost concern to later day. However, this is no excuse for The Rt. Hon. not to remember he is coming from a poor house which is the LUO. He should not relent to lift them up so we do not throw away the God given talent and skills. Nyathi gi Akinyi, wuod Jaduong, Kech nyalo dhi gi ji marach parie oganda mi ji tol mar lupo gidhi mak rech. Waheri mar adier go dhoji bor, jogo okbi timi gimoro, isekalo iwegi chien ndi wago machiemo. Let us together use it to the capacity because this is the will of God. The Rt. Hon. Raila too should not fear the gossip of Luos, they are like that, it is their culture – it is hard for us to change them since gossip is healthy, it is the grease that lubricates engine. Very soon there will come a time when the stormy water will calm down and settle when the tiding is good. Sani to pii pod oduwore.

Kajwang too have not employed or cleaned to make changes in his Ministry. It has taken him too long to make the necessary changes. It is well known that the Ministry of Immigration is known to be too corrupt, he should have started by cleaning the house like Hon. Ngilu, Orengo and Anyang Nyongo so to be seen he too is a CHANGE CATALYST.

Let us remain united while trying to find ways and solution to our community problem together.

I love you all!!!!!

I congratulate you for establishing Nyanza Economic Forum. It is my hope that, this is not going to be the Davos version of Nyanza!. It is my hope that, this will not be ”just” another initiative where the Luo elite come, dine and give word of mouth. It is my hope again that, NEF will aspire to inspire true sons and daughters of Sango to have an economy of their own. An economy with a robust market not only for selling their wares, but where they can obtain loan to further their entrepreneurial skills.

As you are aware, the people of Nyanza have endured real difficult times since the formation of the nation-Kenya. The Sango people have been socially, politically and economically emasculated due to perceived disobedience of the past regimes.

Today, as we start the walk, we must not forget important fundamentals that is the backbone of strong thriving societies. The reverses of 1960s, 1970s 1980s, 1990s, and the New Millennium shall guide us into a new beginning.

No condition is permanent but, as you ride through the towns of Nyanza, what do you see?, you see terrible signs of human withdrawal and resignation. You can not fail to see the many faces of wasted generations idling our market centres. The generation that thinks in terms of commencing ngware or boda boda enterprise. We are simply consumers of India and Chinese bicycle industry yet we have thousands of UON engineering degree holders who are unable to invent.

This Letter attempts to share with you my thoughts on measures that are needed to change Luo worth. The Luo, though a significant ethnic community in Kenya, are still unable to make Luoland a better place to live in. The reason to this is simple; we have been unable to embrace the art of organizing and acting coherently as a people who share the same economy, culture, region and surnames. I am of the opinion that, the first task of NEF should be that of soul-searching. It is not too late for the Luo to define themselves and identify their collective interests and finally to find how to promote or realize those interests. As I say this, I know that most of you do not have any investment in the capital of Nyanza. Many Luos in Nairobi talk of Kisumu in a very negative manner. Some even testify that they do not know Kisumu well or simply put, ”Kisumu kacha to ang’o ma itimoe”.

These are the people who NEF need to change their crude perception. This style of reasoning has made wahindi prosper as we watch. The wahindi have really exploited our disunity, capitalizing on it to their advantage by buying and owning the province’s government. The PPO, PC, DC etc only serve wahindi in Nyanza. Our people have been reduced to mere street hawkers (hawking for wahindi) and nyuka gi chapat pavement traders etc. The small money we get is rewired back to the big network of wahindi economy.

While Jaindi uses the money to educate his offspring mostly in UK, Autralia and Canada, the Luo take ther children to DHT or New Kisumu High School (all private secondary schools owned by wahindi) where going to the university is nothing but a pipe dream.

Ladies and Gentlemen, there has to be a cause, goal or agenda that drives both the leaders and the masses. History informs me that no community can unite without the purpose of doing so. As things stand now, what is the main agenda confronting Luo and Luoland at the hour?. Is it poverty? Is it Healthcare, Education or both? Is it political Leadership, Is it male circumsicion (as others seem to think)? Let us SWOT and go.

What I am trying to say here is: many Luos both peasant and elite are pursuing their individual agenda due to lack of collective communal response to problems facing the Luo.This has left the Luo masses in a serious state of frustration, despondency and even hopelessnes.

As I continue to share, I know some do rightly argue about politics. Yes, they may be right too, but what I can add is that Kenyan politics has got along way to go. It is therefore foolhardy to see politics as a way of solving our economic problems. Kenyan politics, just like other African countries are very difficult to come to terms with. No one can predict how the current political situation in Kenya will evolve. A common agenda appropriate to all the possibilities above is that the Luo should empower themselves to decide their destiny as a people and they should be able to enjoy the freedom, to develop and maximize their collective and individual potentials through unfettered access, use and exploitation of their resources – human and material – and by creating opportunities for every Luo son and daughter to develop their individual talents to the maximum extent possible for their own good, the general good and of our region. But, we have to be realistic, a realistic appraisal of our community assets etc. This may include, nam Sango, land and other numerous natural resources.

As I bid you, the NEF should strive to preach unity of purpose, sellf-confidence, self-motivation and determination as a people without the above can no longer be relevant in this first changing world. The world is undergoing a very rapid technological revolution. Today, you need to be up-to-date in order to be relevant in your field of specialty. In this regard, I would urge you to seriously consider joining hands to upgrading RIAT to be a fully functional Business and IT Institute. Why can’t RIAT be Kenya’s first equivalent to India’s Mumbai Institute of Technology?

Riat alone can bring world’s leading IT companies to Kisumu thus bringing jobs and opportunities in the region.

Above all, let Luo create a vision for a future they believe in and will fight and if need be die for. As the old adage goes, God helps those who help themselves. So let the Luo challenge themselves to succeed and never to fail again.

Thank you

William ODuor

LOBBYING AND JOSTLING FOR CHEMELIL TOP MANAGER’S POSITION INTENSIFIED AMID ALLEGATION OF MASSIVE THEFT IOF SUGAR AND MILLS SPARE PARTS

By Leo Odera Omolo

Lobbying and jostling for the coveted post of the managing director of the Chemelil Sugar Company Limited a wholly government owned Sugar processing factory locate in Nyando district has intensified.

The CEO position fall vacant when the farmers MD.Prof Julius Omondi Nyabundi was recently shown the exit door following his dismal performance, which has left the company in dust and almost insolvent. The government could not renew his contract after the expiry of the three years.

Prof Nyabundi took over from the long serving MD Mr. Aarroun Tuikong who left the firm in a very stable and healthy financially .But whose removal is believed to have been associated with the KANU defeat in the general election of the year 2002.

There are several peers in the race seeking to be elevated to the position of the MD. They are among ten or six names reportedly shortlisted for further interviews. The Interviews and selection is being conducted by a Nairobi consultancy firm, Osano and Associates.

Among the peers whose names are said to have survived include Mr.Richard Koech, former field services manager, Joseph Otieno Mireri, the deputy financial controller and Charles Owelle ,the acting MD.

It is rumoured that close to 50 applicants had applied for the lucrative position of MD and following the first interview the numbers were trimmed down and narrowed to ten and thereafter reduced to six.

Rumours and allegations making the round within Chemelil and its environs is that nearly all the three peers who have applied for the job from within Chemelil Sugar Company are individuals who are currently under investigation by the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission for various offences which include the alleged abuse of offices and corruption.

The Minister for Agriculture William Ruto is the appointing authority an d the man with the final word. But the Minister has maintained a total silent, though he is reported to be under heavy political pressure, reportedly from his cabinet colleagues and other stakeholders.

The popular opinion is that the stakeholders and members of the farming fraternity would like to see an outsider appointed. They would like someone who is well equipped with experience in financial management and managerial skills and not a political surrogate of anybody.

“The era of recruitment of political protégé and appointing incompetence and people with tainted record are long gone. Such appointments will not be accepted and farmers will go into peaceful demonstration. Minister Ruto is therefore having an uphill task to shop for a better man,” remarked a prominent sugar cane farmer in Chemelil who preferred to hide her identity for fear of reprisal..

Other repots says, the issue of selecting the next Chemelil CEO has become so tribal, hence too much jostling between the Luo,Nandi and the Kipsigis. But the level minded stakeholders have indicated that they will settle on anybody who is qualified for the job, provided such a person has an attractive track record of high class management skills.

Ruto’s position and the role of picking up the right candidate is so complicated due to political pressure mounted by his cabinet colleagues. It is also complicated because of the rampant theft, corruption at the Sugar firm which is almost insolvent due to poor and inefficient management in the recent past.

Impeccable sources have informed us that Minister Ruto, apparently aware of all the problems recently skipped and ignored the Chemelil Sugar Company stand at the just concluded Kisumu ASK Agricultural show where top Managers with the entire board members who are all suspected to have run down the company had lined up waiting to receive him. But the Minister bypassed Chemelil stand and went straight to the next stand of Muhoroni Sugar Company.

Currently under investistigation at the Chemelil Sugar Company is the alleged mysterious disappearance from the Company warehouse (stores) if 7,000 bags of 50kgs of made sugar worth Kshs 18 million

The large quantity of Sugar is alleged to have disappeared under suspicious circumstances under the store manager Mr. Moses Adanga perhaps with full knowledge of the former MD.

After the disappearance of the sugar from stores, the store manager is said to have become a multimillionaire overnight opening several business outlets in Kisumu and at Kopere market. He is alleged to have established a new petrol fuel station in Kisumu city and sugar sales depot at Kopere market on the main Chemelil-Nandi Hills road.

Insiders says that the alleged theft of Sugar is suspected to be a case of collaboration between the top company security manager Mr. Willis Wandei and the store manager, all of who are said to be relatives of the former MD.

A private security company, Bedrock which is owned by the former MD, the MP for Muhoroni Prof Ayiecho Olueny and the former MP for Nyakach Peter Ochieng’ Odoyo in providing the company with external security is also being implicated as having aborted the operation.

A source told us that bags of Sugar were ferried out of the store while covered with baggage-sugar cane wasted apparently with the full knowledge of the relevant authorities and security personnel.

Another massive theft at Chemelil Sugar Company is said to be connected with new cane harvesting from the company’s nucleus estates. Here the government company is said to have incurred a big loss of revenue, which can run into millions of shillings The unpatriotic senior manager are said to be working in collaboration some transporters in fleecing the company of millions..

After the cane is harvested in the Chemelil field cane farm several unscrupulous companies of transporters ferried the canes to the factory using fake tags and names of proxies farmers. And the money goes to proxies instead of getting into the company coffers. This kind of alleged theft has fleeced Chemelil Sugar Company almost to the ground. Some transporters mainly Asians with fleet of tractors are reported have enriched themselves at the expense of the company.

Also said to have been stolen in a mill baring whose price is estimated at Kshs 24million. The barring , though a heavy iron was ferried out on a trailer.

It is understood to have been taken to Kisumu for refurbishing only to be re-purchased and to be resold again to Chemelil Sugar Company as a brand new spare part. This kind of pilferage are said to be so common and rampant at Chemelil and the culprits always used their massive cash to “kill investigations” and get away scot free. This is usually happen when the mill is just about to undergo annual maintenance when the entire stocks of spares parts mysteriously disappears from the company stores . All these are said to happen with full knowledge of the head of purchasing and procuring department.

The workers at the mills blames two engineers who are alleged to have been dismissed from the Awendo based Sony SugarCompany ,but were later employed by the former Chemelil MD Prof Nyabundi. and he is suspected to have been involved in the spare parts scam.

The procurement Manager is Mr. Tobias Ocholla who is alleged to be a relative of the former MD Prof Nyabindi.

In the case of theft of Mill baring, someone is said to have tipped the police, though this could not be confirmed by the police.

It is also reported that the workers SACCO Bank is in the read. The SACCO is called FOSA and the removed MD is said to have borrowed colossal amount of Kshs 27 million when the Chemelil factory is facing difficulties with its cash flow, but the money has yet to be replaced back. Subsequently the farmers can o longer get loans and the same is with the workers because the FOSA account is already
milked dry.

Former MD is also reported to have borrowed Kshs 15 million from the account of Chemelil Academy. This is said to have put the school head teacher at logger heads with the company.

But other source told us that the Head master of the academy also should be investigated to explain how he will recover the money which he had lent to the company. It is also being alleged that the head master recently purchased five brand new tractors worth Kshs .5 million under suspicious circumstances.

KENYA AND UGANDA TO RESOLVE LONG STANDING DISPUTES OVER SEIZED FISHING ISLANDS IN LAKE VICTORIA.

Leo Odera Omolo

Concerted efforts are under the way to end serious diplomatic squabbles between Kenyan and Uganda of the alleged illegal occupation by the Kampala authorities of four fishing islands , which are located on the Kenyan side of Lake Victoria.

A Ugandan national flag has been hoisted at Migingo Island, which is so close to the mainland Kenyan, and only eight kilometers off shore of Sori Town in Karungu Bay in Macalder Division of Migori district.

The Ugandan defiantly seized and occupied this important fishing island despite the fact that the East African map is clearly showing that this particular island is on the Kenyan side of the lake.

In the early 1970s, former despotic rule of Uganda the late Idi Amin unilaterally annexed Sigulu Island, which for many years was part and parcel of Kenya. Amin forced a population of close to 10,000 Kenyan people to be formerly naturalized Ugandan and immediately appointed his countryman as the new administrative chief of the island.

Sigulu is one of the largest islands blesses with fertile and arable land. It has a lot of forests, which are full of indigenous trees. The majority of its inhabitants are Kenyan of Luo, Suba, Manyala and Samia tribesmen.

Speaking in Kisumu this week, Kenya’s Minister for Fisheries Dr. Paul Otuoma said the Nairobi government would seek a diplomatic settlement of this issue.

“The conflict is not only about the boundaries across the lake, but largely due to economic liveluihood.”

Remba, Ringiti islands and part of Muhuru Bay, are among the areas in dispute. In the recent past, Kenyan fishermen have been arrested and charged for trespassing and fishing on foreign land. The Kenyans had their fishing gears confiscated and some of them jailed for six months. Those who were able to raise fines, paid exhorbitant fines ranging from kshs 20,000 to kshs 40,000 respectively

Dr. Otuoma said the conflict would be handled by the Foreign Affairs and Lands Ministries with their counter parts in Uganda and Tanzania.

The boundary disputes on the lake emerged in the year 2000 when more than 30 Kenyan fishermen ,travelling in two outboard engine boats were robbed of fish, money and other valuables by people who claims to be members of the Uganda Revenue Authority{URA}. The men were accompanied by armed soldiers.

In another raid on July 14, 2003 Ugandan officials attached to the Revenue Prevention Unit arrested 87 Kenyan fishermen at Sumba and Siro islands. The issue caused uproar in both Nairobi and Kampala.
In the same year Tanzanian authorities seized close to 28 Kenyan fishermen, took them to Musoma and eventually to Tarime district where they were charged with the tresspassi related offences.

“We want to act before the issue gets out of hand. It can only get worse with the dwindling fish stocks in Lake Victoria,” said the Minister.

The Minister who was accompanied by the Assistant minister Abu Chiaba made these remarks when he paid a courtesy call on the Nyanza P>C> Paul Olando in his Kisumu office .Also present were Permanent Secretary in the Ministry Micheni Ntiba and the director of the KENYAN Marine and Fisheries Research Institute Johnson Kazungu.

Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are sharing the waters of the Lake Victoria, with Tanzania having the lion’s share of 52 per cent, Uganda has 44 per cent while Kenya has the smallest portion- only 6 per cebnt. But most major rivers feeding the lake originated from the Kenyan highlands.

The disputes between the three countries- all members of the East African Community {EAC} despite of the properly define boundaries inside the lake. What used to be there were the signals which were erected in the late 1920 and the late 1930s which were only meant for guiding steamers, ships and boasts.

Uganda declined to issue any comment.

Re: Not too late to turn around!

In all fairness, I can not claim to be good at directions. Granted,
I can tell west from East, and North from South. But when you place them together, they no doubt confuse me. And because of this, I have often times given people wrong directions. Whenever they call to say that they are lost, I ask them to turn around and head the right direction; of course after giving my sincere apologies!

Turn around and head the right direction!

It comes as no surprise to anyone, at least not to me, that many are the people out there who have either chosen to, on found themselves headed the wrong direction! Allow me to highlight, but a few:

1.There were many people who were once happily married. Everything was fine as long as they remained in the Lord, who by the way is the firm foundation of all marriages. They ignored all words of wisdom and went separate ways! Since the day they separated/divorced, things have gone from worse to worst!

2.There are many husbands and wives who as I write are headed a wrong direction. Instead of sitting down, examining each one to see where things went wrong, they have instead justified each other’s behavior, actions, attitude and what have you. For a long time they have left so many minute things un-attended to a point that there is so much anger, frustration and a sense of loss and betrayal.

3.There are many people out there who at one time were God fearing individuals. For some reason, they changed course, stopped going to church or even studying the Bible, chose to work even on the Sabbath and cheated themselves that all was well. The truth of the matter is that unless they come to themselves and turn around, they are headed further south!

4.There are many people whose lives are messed up due to the influence from other people. In a desire to become like their peers, they not only chose wrong company of friends, but also chose to behave like them!

5.There are many people out there whose lives are totally messed up due to drinking and smoking. Instead of owning up to their bad behavior and accept to change, they have for a long time now, lived a life of denial! Things will get worse unless they chose to turn around!

I can go on and on, but the bottom line is that there are people out there who are headed the wrong direction. They have been driving the wrong direction for so long that somehow they have come to tell themselves that after all things will be alright!

Are you one of them or do you know anyone who is headed the wrong direction! Here is the good news. There is only one-the man of Galilee- who alone can sure mend broken lives. If you choose to connect with Him today by following His well written directions, your life will never be the same again.

And remember that it’s not too late to turn around. The question is am I willing to turn around? Are you?

THE ENDLESS POLITICAL SQUABBLES AMONG LUO LEADERS LIKELY TO HURT PRIME MINISTER RAILA ODINGA’S GOOD MISSI AS MIEDIOCRE MPS FAIL TO MAKE IMPACT BOTH INSIDE THE AUGUST HOUSE AND OUTSIDE

News Analysis By Leo Odera Omolo

The issue about the existence of political deadwoods among the current crop of Luo MPs in the 10th Parliament is causing worries and serious concern among the level minded members of the community.

The community view Raila Odinga elevation to the coveted position as the prime Minister in the grand coalition as God’s answer to the people who for many years were marginalized, isolated and suppressed by all the previous successive regimes.

But the community, which boost the largest number of intellectuals in excess is surprisingly represented in the supreme August House by a large number of politically mediocre and semi-illiterate MPs. This is shocking, especially in this twenty first century many decades after Kenya attained her political independence from Great Britain in 1963.

Quite a good number of the current crop of MPs from Luo-Nyanza are known to be incapable of making their maiden speeches in the August House due to the fact that they are either handicapped of command of either English or Kiswahili languages to communicate their views.

Local political pundits have analysed these new legislators in a negative in negative perspective saying some of them did not go beyond the primary eight standard of education and only gained the opportunities to be elected to the August House due to excessive bribery of voters. The allegation also paint the community negatively as full of people languishing in abject poverty and as such cannot a better choice of electing properly educated persons to the House.

In Uriri constituency in Rongo district, the new MP Cyprian Ojuwang’ Omolo, it is being alleged to have gone to school up to primary eight class, and was later trained in electrical mechanic course in a village polytechnic. He is today one of the wealthiest Luos after establishing his own electrical firm, and using connections in winning lucrative tenders and contracts. Omolo is said to have spent colossal amount of money in excess of Kshs 100 million in bribing the voters, and even the ODM leadership for favour.

Another deadwood is the Kasipul-Kabondo MP Oyugi Maguwanga wgho is credited that his academic standard of education never exceeded beyond Ringa Secondary School within the locality. The legislator is credited to have made his money via a lucrative NGO, which he is the CEO. The NGO is believed to have received millions of shillings meant for assisting orphanage children, part of which financed his election campaign to the chagrin of the donors.
The chagrin of the foreign donors.. He too is being rumoured as someone who cannot make a maiden speech in the House,.

The same is said about the Nyando MP Fred Outa who it is being alleged to be related to Raila Odinga through his wife. The legislator is believed to have attained only Form two academic standard, and later moved to the US on a religious scholarship to study theology, but returned home minus any degree. The MP is believed to have manipulated his connection to the Odinga family and an NGO donor funds to support his election campaign.

In all the constituencies mentioned above, the electorate had rejected a good number of academic giants and people of substantial means and settled on political mediocre simply for the lust for money.

In Kasuipul-Kabondo the electorate had rejected and abandoned the best brains like Dr. Richard Otieno Muga who is a now a Professor at the great Lake University in Kisumu City and a former director of medical services in Kenya as well as Dr. Kambona Oyugi, the Finland based Professor Dr. Otieno Mbare and other academic giants and voted in someone who cannot express himself properly both inside and outside the August House.

In Nyando the voters rejected the former incumbent Eng. Eric Opon Nyamunga, the man who is credited for having made enormous contributions towards the development of the constituency, Eng. Oyuke and Eng Omanga and settled on Fred Outa an excessively arrogant man whose academic background is questionable. The six million question now being posed by level minded people is that; Which way are the Luos heading to?

The Migori MP John Pesa is an intellectual per excellence. He was formerly the Principal of several secondary schools and later Migori and Igoji Teachers Training Colleges before retiring into a private business life. But he has chosen. To remain silent in the House, may be for some reasons best known to himself, therefore he cannot be accused of having communications problem like the others.

In Uriri the MP Cyprian Omolo spent millions in voters bribery and overcome the most educated lots like Eng. Kobado, ex-secondary school teacher with a master’s degree Okoth Obado who is now a director of the Kenya Sugar Board representing Sony Sugar zones. It defeats all the logics as to whether the Luos asre only scavenging for money, but not interested in quality leadership at the parliamentary level.

In Raried Constituency, there ius a big tug-of-war between the Uyoma and Asembo sub-clans over the place where the newly established district headquarters should be located. Previously the twio community had settled on Madiany Divisional headquartersi East Uyoma Locations. But all of a sudden the area MP Eng. Nicholas Gumbo, allegedly working in collaboration with the chairman of the Rarieda County Council Akelo Gwela have secretly and without the consent iof the all the communities involved changed this to Aram Market in Asembo West Location. Both Eng Gumbo and Gwela hails from Asembo..
The alleged relocation of the DC’s office is causing jittery. The Uyoma community argues that Madiany has all the lands available as well as water and sub-district hospital, whereas there is no land space which is freely available at the Aram Market, thouygh it is centrally located. A Massive demonstration has been planned by the Uyoma community to take place later this months.

In Alego-Usonga, the excessively wealthy MP Edwin Ochieng’ Yinda, the only Luo MP who has publicly defied Raila Odinga instruction over the Mayoral election in Siaya town is causing ripples.

Raila Odinga wanted his friend Nicholas Rajula to be nominated to the Council, though he had lost the elections to Yinda in the Alego-Usonga Parliamentary election battle at all cost. It is being alleged that after Rajula was nominated Raila instructed the Siaya Town Clerk Lumumba Ouya to ensure that Rajula is the new Mayor of the town at all costs.PM was working in cohoot with the Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo.

But Yinda used his enormous wealth, rounded up all elected Councillor and a few nominated ones, and drove them across the Kenya-Uganda border andbooked them for the whole week in a posh hotel in Jinja

At Home in Siaya Yinda mobilized hundreds of youth who menacingly invaded the Town Hall to ensure his man Obiero Otari was made the Mayor at all costs. Rajula had, however, obtained a court order restraining the Town Clerk from conducting the Mayoral election, but the orders were ignore and the election went one. On occasions Yinda has been heard bragging that no any Luo leader present or past who can match him with money..

Yinda made his money through his marital status. He is married to the daughter of the late Eliud Mahihu, a former PC, who made it possible for him to get lucrative business contracts at the coast, especially with the KPA. For many years, he was a KANU blue eyed boy and had tried his hand at Parliamentary politics, but miserably failed dislodge the former Alego-Usonga MP Peter Castro Oloo Aringo who represented the constituency for close to 22 years uninterruptedly. He only switched and joined the ODM in the year 2007 with the purpose of clinching the seat, but has since gone solo operating independent mindedly’

Yinda’s academic background indicated that he only studied after €œO €? level and failed to score sufficient marks to go further for University education and thereafter he settled in business in Mombasa and got involved in KANU politics, which enabled him clinch government contracts.

Gerald Otieno Kajuwang’ , the MP for Mbita who was recently marooned with allegationms of corruption scandals at his Immigration Ministry has been walking on a tight rope until last week when he was salvaged by a parliamentary select committee headed by the Mt Elgon MP Fred Kapondi..

But sources in Mbita said the Immigration Minister has since changed his previous contacts and reaching him by his constituents remained a mystery.. Sources in Mbita backyard says nowadays theMP is not a frequent visitor to his constituency thus impacting negatively to his political structure

Those his constituents looking for him could only manage so by luck, but at the same time could only trace him in posh hotels in Kisumu and Nairobi while he is on his trade mark- drinking spree. In fact some of the Mbita constituents are said to be getting good services from the youthful nominated MP Millie Odhiambo a lawyer who hails from the area who is.The peole are now grateful to Raila Odinga for having considered s Odhiambo for nominatyion to parliament because she she has since become a great asset to the people of Mbita supplementing the work of a tired nd reluctant MP.

The only Luo MP with moderate academic background who is serving his people effectively is the Nyakach MP Ochieng Daima, a former insurance executive. He is credited for having constructed Sondu-Nyabondo access road, which has elusively dodged the previous MPs for the area. The hilly terrain had for many years even defeated the much more mightier colonial administration in Kenya to construct it to all wheather road.

Daima and Karachuonyo MP Eng. James Rege, though they are first timer
havealreadyprinted their presence as formidable contributors in all issues of debate in the
house. He two have joined the class of the likes of Joshua Orwa Ojode and Jakoyo
Midiwo’s class of excellent representation.

The Rangwe MP is reported to be deeply sunk into controversies involving the
disbursement of CDF money and the composition of the funds local committee while
the wassi and Macalder MPs have yet to make their presence felt..

There are a lot of murmuring about inside fighting between Luo MPs over who should be close to the PM and who get the Luo kingpins close to the ears.

The leadership is full of idle gossing, and even those who misses to attend Raila’s functions are vilified as rebels. One example is the Ndhiwa outspoken AAssistant Minister for Internal Security who failed to attend the funeral of the sons of another Minister Dalmas Otieno in Rongo. The Assistant Minister was engaged on official duties in the volatile Mt. Elgon district where the military and police combined were battling the rebels of the Sabaot Lands Defence force militiamen.

Ojode’s absent from the funeral was later interpreted as rebellion against “Agwambo” abd yet funeral ceremonies are matters of individuals and not of public interests. Gossippers are in full control of Kisumu City streets. They are found at posh hotels and in the streets making all sort of insinuations against the sitting MPs. So many power brokers have emerged since Raila Odinga became PM, and some of these brokers are even allegedly extorting money from members of the public seeking favour from the PM

It is not clear why an MP from Luo-Nyanza must attend all the functions of the PM and that failing to attend such public appearances potrayed an MP as not “very loyal” to the PM or the legislator are required to engage themselves in development activities in their respective constituencies. It is a well known factor that not all MPs from Central Province usually attends all the functions conducted by president Mwai Kibaki, but in Nyanza missing such a function conducted by “Agwambo” is dismissed as being unfaithful to the Luo political kingpin. Surely this is rather primitive and madness of its kind. What is first and paramount is that MPs must be answerable to their constituents before they do anything else. Loyality to the party leadership is also essential, but there are so many way of doing so rather than following the MP wherever he goes.

Nyanza Club a relics of the colonialists, it is being alleged is the venue of transaction. Unconfirmed reports says that a senior official with the ministry of Water who was recently ordered to be transferred to the headquarters parted with a fortune uin bribery so that he could be left alone in his Kisumu station of work despite of claims that millions of shillings meant for the improvement of water supplies to the Kisumu residents evaporated in the thin air, and the acute water shortage still persist despite the government having sopent hundreds of millions.

Resident, according to other sources are very thankful to the Water Minister Madame Charity Kaluki Ngilu who stood her ground and affected the transfers of the errand water official whose performance leaves a lot to be desired

Undercurrent gossiping and undercutting are the order of the day, but apart from Dr. Oburu Oginga {Bondo} Jakoyo Midiwo{Gem} Orwa Ojode {Ndhiwa} Eng James Rege{Karachuonyo} James Orengo{Ugenya} Prof.Anyang’Nyong’o{Kisumu Rural}.Ochieng Daima(Nyakach} Prof. Ayiecho Olueny{Muhoroni} and John Olago Aluoch {Kisumu Town West} the rest lots of Luo-Nyanza MPs have gone on holiday not to be seen nor to be heard. Only the gentlemen mentioned above are actively working with the electorate other have gone napping.

Re: The blessings that come with misfortune!

No one likes misfortune; at least, I don’t! I don’t think that anyone would like misfortune to come his or her way. No one is even suggesting that misfortune is good for any one.

But, misfortune has its place in our daily lives! Whenever they have occurred, they have turned some people’s lives for better. Here is how!

1.Getting an F grade on a given subject or being placed on academic probation is known to have humbled once very arrogant students!
2.The loosing of a well paying job, or any job for that matter, has in many cases done the trick of placing people in a position whereby they are able to sympathize with others less fortunate!
3. A sudden change of fortunes from plenty of money to almost a beggar, has made others to at least know that life can change!
4.The passing away of a family member, relative, friend, colleague, or neighbor has sometimes made some to say yes to Jesus’ call to accept Him as a personal Savior!
5.Some kind of misfortune has sometimes changed the hearts and attitude of some arrogant people to humble human beings.

How should we then regard misfortunes! I will let the word of God answer that question!

“Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you – – Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed , but let him glorify God in this matter.” (1 Peter 4:12, 16.)

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28.)

So next time misfortune come our way, let us try to put some positive spin into it! Shall we!

I must let the world know, as a matter of surprise, that assassin or people with ulterior motives broke into my house in Satellite last Friday night, in fact after 2.30 am Saturday and ransacked the households including documents and left with only my small loaded Kodak still camera and my military cap which I bought in a military shop in Milwaukee, USA.

After alerting the neighbours, a number of theories were advanced, ranging from people who might have been on a mission to take away my life but never found me indoor, to those who wanted to snatch away any manuscripts that I may have been working on following the media interview which revealed that I was working on a book titled ‘Honesty is the Worst Policy in Politics’ in order to see the content.

They also made away with my small radio set, leaving behind other valuable items worth a thief’s appetite like a Mountain bike for my children which was hanging on the wall, a wall clock and other valuable households thieves would not leave behind.

I did not go back to the house that evening as I went with a friend to his house in Eastlands and spent there. The following morning I went to the city centre from Eastlands and embarked on my usual day’s businesses in Nairobi but left for the house a bit early only to find that my door padlock was not hanging there and the door was shut but unlocked.

I got in, put on the light, though slightly shocked, and prayed as I usually do before settling down. Clearly, there was no serious evidence of theft but when a few seconds later I could not see my radio, I realised a few things could be missing.

I reported the matter to the local Satellite Police Station ( OB:42/10/8/08) and it might generate public interest somehow. However, I am not terrified at all.I believe the Lord is my shield and defender and in Him there is justice and favour.I live under the shadow of His mercy.

I hereby, I appeal to well wishes to come to my aid to finish writing this book which contents are mainly what I learnt from the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

I am however determined that I will not die without putting up the thoughts that the late doyen of opposition inserted in me to the Kenyans and the world to know who this man was and what was his vision for Kenya before his death

The late Jaramogi legacy must be told, I was there when he had his last breathe under our longtime physicians Dr Odhiambo Olel. I remeber the last words of Dr Olel, ‘Jakobuya Jaduong’ owewa’

Once again appeal to – – Ya-Rachuonyo agog Luo- – to come to my support, I must not suffer in the hands of other communities as if I do not have any inheritage: AKWAYO YA KARACHUONYO MAN E DALA KA GI DIASPORA OYIE OKONYA AN E DHO ONDIEGI. JOTHURWA AN NE ACHIWA RA NE JARAMOGI NIKECH PINY, TO BENDE BER MONDO ASANDRA TO YAWA NITIERE. MOGIK KA ONEGA TO UNG’EYO GIMA OMIYO.

… and much more

On a lighter note …It takes two deputy prime ministers for two wrongs!

Deputy prime minister and minister for local government Mr. Musalia Mudavadi
finally released a “new” list of nominated councilors last week. In righting
the supposed wrongs of his predecessor, Mr. Mudavadi kept the public
guessing for far too long. When it came out, very late as it did,
undoubtedly justice was denied as it had been over-delayed. Two, if you
thought it was new and radical, think again. That the law was compromised,
for some councilors who were spared the sack, in the name of averting a
purported risk of destabilizing affected local authorities – is at best a
case of impunity and at worst indecisiveness on the part of Mr. Mudavadi. It
is now the same man who says his 135 (out of 175) local authorities are
broke. Mr. Mudavadi knows that the law (Cap. 265 Local Government Act)
prohibits him from declaring local authorities broke – as they surely need
to then be wound up before they compromise the greater public interest. It
seems that at Jogoo House, it takes two good deputy prime ministers to make
more wrongs by each attempting to make a single right….Have a light week!

Your feedback counts: Government on “Neighbourhood Kenya”:

“This is to acknowledge receipt of KARA’s “Neighbourhood Kenya” newsletter.
It is a good piece of work and a key tool to achieving sustainable,
affordable and high quality public service delivery”, Bitange Ndemo, PhD,

Nakuru Citywide Residents Association takes off ground!

At long last, Nakuru Citywide Residents Association (NCRA) was formally
established at a meeting held at Nakuru’s Merica Hotel. Various stakeholders
led by Rift Valley provincial commissioner Mr. Hassan Noor, Town Clerk Mr.
Felix Olwero among others fully endorsed NCRA. Mr. Richard Muir, chairman of
Friends of Mau Watershed Association (FOMAWA) was elected interim NCRA
chairperson while the secretary’s slot went to Nakuru Business Association’s
Mr. Devarest Ambale. Mr. Joseph Towett of the Ogiek Welfare Council was
elected vice chairman. Other members include Mr. Kennedy Masibo of the
Nakuru Press Club. Hawkers, religions and faiths among other stakeholders
constitute a 10-man governing council with public relations officer at
Municipal Council of Nakuru being an ex-officio member.

Our viewpoint: On disasters Govt must do more than anniversaries:

Last week we mourned. We reminisced that fateful day that was 1998 August
7th Nairobi bombing. The media generously offered its pages and airtime on
the terrorist blast, ten years on. Wreaths of flowers were laid. But what
exactly were we marking? Have we achieved anything on disaster preparedness
since? … full_story

House team approves Grand Regency sale
Published on 12/08/2008
By David Ohito
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi can now smile his way into the five-star Grand Regency Hotel as the new owner.
Sources say Parliament¢s Finance Committee approved Libyan Government¢s takeover of the hotel after paying Sh2.9 billion ($ 45 million) in a bilateral agreement between Libya and Kenya.
The position taken by the Finance, Planning and Trade committee negates an earlier recommendation of a Cabinet committee, which called for repossession of the hotel and cancellation of the transfer to Libya.
But sources said the committee handed former Finance Minister Amos Kimunya a harsh verdict: Kimunya should be severely reprimanded for breaching the National Assembly Act procedures.
Parliament¢s Powers and Privileges Committee should decide Kimunya¢s fate for action, sources who have seen the report said.
The committee, according to the source, said Kimunya did not deserve to be a minister. This is reportedly the recommendation to President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Sources privy to the report indicates that Libya Arab Africa Investment Company Kenya Limited (Laaico), like other foreign investors, has been encouraged to increase investment in country.
Laaico owns 998 shares, while Mr Ahmed Mohammed Amaer and Mohammed Shtewi Maawal own a share each in the hotel.
Cleared of wrongs
Sources said the report, signed by committee chairman Chris Okemo, cleared Laaico of wrongdoing.
The report comes after Gaddafi sent a special envoy, Mr Bashir Saleh Bashir, to Kenya who held meetings with Kibaki and Raila.
The Libyans, however, have to wrestle a caveat against the title deed to block the hotel¢s transfer or use as collateral and await the outcome of the Majid Cockar Commission.
The report is yet to be tabled or adopted by the National Assembly.

Okemo’s report should not be accepted by kenyans,i think its time for kenyans to protect the future of this country at all cost.its been proven that foreign direct investment has never and will never solved africans(kenyans) problems but instead it will increased that gap between tha have and haven’t okemo and his team should be made to pay daerly the same way Kimunya was punished because its one coin of different side.

Without a Tale Tale or going by riddles, the majority poor in Kenya are languishing in serious poverty from lack of food, housing, clothing a result of joblessness situation. Even the educated have scrambled.
There is undercover reports of many dying from lack of food. Food prices have gone high while the urban poor have no means let alone access to food. The Government of Kenya does not have Welfare Program to cutter for such critical urgent needs.
Many have resorted to Molasses local brew and othe run cultured form in order to survive. http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=Y_WlP2Dk4zE
Legislatures closed Parliament for recess in a hurry:
We are dumb founded to see that Legislatures closed Parliament for recess in a hurry, turned their faces the other way to avoid public demands, and went for break to go away to enjoy themselves with big fat earnings from public taxes which makes them comfortable with enough to eat and live comfortably without care to address serious hunger situation faced by many Kenyans.
This was the most urgent concern followed by the Constitution Policy Agenda. They would have considered staying a little longer taking into consideration the many lives going to be lost because of lack of food, and work-out means to tackle the situation.
This is the kind of Leadership Kenyans have, a sorry state of affair one can tell how considerate these Legislatures are to the people they represent and as policy makers.
Added Parliament is taking yet another break 02:30 From: NTV Kenya Views: 3,730
Evaluation Contract for Ministries should have relevance to Poverty Eradication and rated according to needs met and employment creation to the jobless members of public.
Millenium Development Goals Strategic Plan
This being the recommendation for funds requests and the Millenium Development Goals Strategic Plan. Any development realized should be seen to trickle down to ordinary Mwanainchi. The School leavers should have some form of employment in the Ministries after completion of Internships etc.,
Nothing of the sort was noted, except employment and Government Contracts has previously been done according to who know who, and how one is related to the ruling government.
Added Performance contracts:

Document in its current not fair 01:44 From: NTVKenya Views: 206 It is pathetic and not logical to see President Kibaki busy spending public money and energy in financing Campaign Rally’s for his succession candidate for 2012, while the Prime Minister is busy making schedules for overseas business trips accompanied by groups of unscrupulous corrupt people who have corrupted the country in the past government leadership and whose activities are not for the good of Kenyans, spend huge sums of money in the financing of such trips instead of pulling these resource funds to subsidize for the poor situation in Country and also to provide incentive programs for the same.
What we are seeing is a dilly dallying hide and seek, avoiding to tackle situations as they stand.
All donor funds Kenya and other thirds world receive are tax payers money from the International Community for Foreign program undertaking which is part of their policy and the Citizenry have the right to DEMAND to know if their money is utilized in a responsible manner.
If physical killings of innocent Citizens by gun bullets and other forms of thuggery is regarded as treason, what about denying same Citizens basic fundamental needs like food to survive? Can we not equate this as an act of Economic Crime to the innocent Kenyans when funds are seen to be diverted for other none urgent and luxury use to the few.
Is it right to treat Human Beings like animals without due regards of how and what they will eat? Leaders are therefore accountable and charged to be answerable for being Cruel and inhuman to their electorate.
Money is already trickling down to Kenya from Donor Agencies and other European Countries as well as from America while the purpose of these funds are not expressly addressed. Would it be not proper for the International Community to start calling for a halt of funds directed to Kenyan Government until things are put into perspectives and lives are saved?
Government Ministries have money for other things but they don’t care if lives are lost for having no food or accommodation or employment. Is it a debatable subject that which is shelved for months and years, to be revisited when tides are good, or else to be forgotten wholesome when days and months and years have passed just to be visited at election time with a boost of handouts?
Many people now suspect and believe the Prime Minister Raila is helping the Gema Mafia and other corrupt Business Tycoons to swindle the country by design, so they can hole up the money they stole from Kenya and supervise their businesses while in company of the Prime Minister as their goodwill when in overseas trips together.
If this poverty case is anything to go by, Parliament must resume immediately to find solution for this pathetic miserable situation.

Kenya’s coalition still facing challenges, says EU envoy

In Summary

IDP resettlement poses greater challenge
Fight against corruption should be reinforced
Increased poverty as a result of the post-election violence and inflation

The Coalition Government is faced with extraordinary challenges, which demand its immediate and focused attention, the European Commission head of Mission Eric Van der Linden has said.

“The Kenyan political elite should show more resolve to pave the way forward on the so called Kofi Annan Agenda 4 items,” the envoy told Nation in an interview.

The EU head of mission said the Government, with the help of specialised agencies, has done a lot to alleviate the plight of Kenya’s many displaced persons, however, noting that their successful resettlement seems to have presented more challenges than the government expected.

“In addition, the fight against corruption needs to be reinforced in order to make impunity a thing of the past,” he said.

Van der Linden said most pressing issues facing the Coalition Government include increased poverty, both as a result of the post-election violence and inflation.

He cites the need to forcefully tackle fundamental socio-economic problems of inequality, resource distribution and unemployment.

“More can also be done, notwithstanding progress, to further improve the investment climate. Kenya needs to attract more Foreign Direct Investments, which has a direct positive impact on job creation,” he adds.

At the same time, he says, these problems should not inhibit the Coalition Government from actively working on delivering a new Constitution and to tackle the complex land issue.

“The common wananchi rightfully expect their Government to deliver on all these issues,” he maintains.

While noting that it is up to the Kenyan citizens to assess the performance of the Coalition Government and not up to interested and friendly outsiders, Van der Linden nevertheless cautions against expedite results from the Coalition Government.

“We shouldn’t expect wonders from the start. Let us not forget that the Coalition Government is only a few months old. Clearly, given the size of this government, co-ordination of activities takes an even more important place and the importance of the role of the Prime Minister here is evident,” he said.

As a major donor, he added, the EU will focus on good co-ordination and clear priorities to ensure that agreed aid volumes will indeed be realised.

The envoy described the relationship between diplomatic missions in Kenya and the Coalition Government as basically good.

“As elsewhere, contacts with some ministries are easier than with others,” he added.

Van der Linden pointed out that assessing the performance of a government is difficult and provides a mixed picture in most democratic states.

TRIBALISM INFECTION, THE DISEASE OF OUR OWN MAKING…

Friends, as I turn 34 today (12th August), I pray that I become a wiser Kenyan. This is the only gift that I may yearn to have from you. The Kenyan gift of unity. As I keenly excite my mind and soul I wish you would share a few sentiments that touch on our unique unity as Kenyans.  First our current proto-tribal and political essentialism may only divide Kenyans further.

Except as a geographical appellation, Kenya as a nation does not stand as one. It is only but a country with the name Kenya . We are never a single conceptual unit but our tribes and ethnicity are. Kenyan anthropologists have failed to re-define and discuss why Kenya can or cannot stand as one. They should save us from our politicians.

Even in our politics, political parties have a different concept of ¡times and leadership¢. The grand coalition government seems transcendental and trans-historical but the fact remains that we are still ¡stuck in the murky waters¢ of our generational tribes. Why are some of our leaders campaigning now, only months after the post-election skirmishes?

Each ethnic community either feels inferior or superior and never equal to the other. The metaphysical difference is not on our ¡Kenyaness¢ or in our possessing valid national identification, academic qualifications or just feeling Kenyan in Kenya . It lies with the so called ¡Kenyan mind¢. The mind that sees one unifying human classification in forty-three different ways and cultural tastes. That which believes that Kenya is but divided into tribal segments of seasonal conflicts and parties.

Our short-termism strength only lies when we are not united but divided. During the precipice, years ago, we had two volatile factions. The Orange and Banana that were then the raw symbolic fruits of our political democracy.

Last year, our segregation proved volatile and segregation. We felt united as we had identical ID cards and ballot papers when casting votes. Deep inside we were at loggerheads and in anger and pain. After the elections we laid blame for all our evils on historical injustices, the ECK (though it had its weakness), the politicians and whole electoral process.

Currently we are in a tomb of mass deceit. We have proved incapable of progressing, engendering, transforming and evolving from the dark past that were the post-election related challenges including violence, deaths and the aftermath; a grand coalition that had to be opportunistic for the sake of our national stability.

Certainly the real difference and disparity amongst Kenyan ethnic group and ¡ Kenya ¢ as a nation is in the Kenyan mind.

The mind that is unstable, motionless but tired, very forgetful and preciously unlearning.

The same mind tells us that we are ¡one¢ but on the outside we are Luo, Kalenjin, Gikuyu and Luhya, as our real identities. Unfortunately this obsessive listing of such selfish but essential differences remain utterly tribal, ethnic, divisive, partisan and fragmenting. Even with the new constitution still pending and wanting, resolving historical injustices and land issues, merging political parties and having new ECK officials we stand to loose again and again if we continue looking at others as being different.

It only proves our counter-productivity to deceiving ourselves that we can promote our tribal interests and sectarian identities, ethnic cultures, tribal parties and elections as we continue confusing that with ¡cultural diversity¢. This ¡diversity¢ only propagates and worsens the already re-established but delicate political fabric, stability and unity that previously had been fractured by our selfish ignorance.

It is thus time that we accepted to acknowledge our limitations and own up as Kenyans. Our political and tribal skepticisms won¢t take us far. Let us break from the selfish bloodline, tribe, party and political prisons that are the outgrowth of our loose history. Time has come for us to refuse to marvel at ourselves when things go wrong but instead set the record straight.  Are Kenyans loosing the sense of their worth for the sake of their little stomachs and indignity?

My heartfelt regards go to HARRIET NJOKA (my girlfriend and who has been supporting me fully) and to you all for taking your time to read this.

Regards,

Mundia Mundia Jnr.

Video: Barns for Obama

Dear Odundo —

I’m Doug O’Brien, Rural Vote Director for the Ohio Campaign for Change.

I wanted to share a video with you about an exciting new program we’re launching here in Ohio called Barns for Obama.

Barns for Obama combines Ohio’s history of painted barns — from the old Mail Pouch Barns to the Bicentennial Barns in every county — with the enthusiasm for Barack Obama and this Campaign for Change.

A few weeks ago in Trumbull County, we saw the completion of the first of what we know will be many Barns for Obama. A local farmer offered his barn, and painters volunteered their time to make it happen.

I wanted you to see this video because I think it captures just why Barack is the one candidate we can count on to stand up for the farmers, workers, and families of rural Ohio.

Watch the video of our first Barn Painting and learn about the Rural Vote Program in Ohio:

http://oh.barackobama.com/barnsforobama

As Rural Vote Director, I’ve traveled all over the Buckeye State to listen to farmers, workers, and other folks interested in a better future for Ohio’s small cities, towns, and rural areas.

I’ve gone from Cadiz to Celina, from Gallipolis to Defiance, and the message I’ve gotten is clear: people are ready for a different kind of campaign that respects and includes all of Ohio’s communities.

That’s the campaign we are building here in Ohio — a campaign that reaches to every corner of our state and speaks to every Ohioan.

Just this month we were the first campaign in memory — Democratic or Republican — to open a campaign office in Perry County, in the Southeastern part of the state. And we’re getting a great response, because Barack Obama is the right person at the right time for folks all across Ohio who want change.

Barns for Obama is our latest outreach effort, but there are lots of other ways to get involved and grow our movement here.

Learn about our Barns for Obama program and sign up up to get involved:

http://oh.barackobama.com/barnsforobama

Thanks for everything you are doing. I look forward to continuing to work with you for change in Ohio.

Doug

P.S. — Word of “Barns for Obama” is just beginning to spread, and we have already heard from many farmers — from Auglaize to Sandusky to Licking counties — who are interested in painting their barns to show their support for change in rural America.

If you are interested in having your barn painted, have experience with painting a barn, or would like to sponsor a barn with the purchase of supplies, you can get involved here:
