Re: Vs: KIMUNYA’S SEVEN DAYS IN THE TOMB

The humans in Parliament behind the ugly anti-Kimunya manipulation have literally pulled, pushed and squeezed the financially latex-faced Finance Minister, Hon. Amos Muhinga Kimunya’s grote, even as his resignation was being fuelled by widespread passion for trans-politics. They called him the ‘Prince of Impunity’ but he lived tough though nicknames don’t stick unless there is something true or fishy in the MEGA-saga. Kimunya’s tongue was literally anaesthetized in Parliament with his fellow MP’s bitter venom and foul vitriol. They also tamed his political and functional cronies and the Libyan benefactors including our own Kamlesh Pattni. He was made boring in Parliament and mute when really he was not to be.

They spawned Kimunya as a liability slug, slithering through the chambers of financial power to make him the fore backbencher of Kipipiri and Chairman of Muthaiga Club of ‘the deceased’.

The political consensus in Parliament then was tormenting and a threat to national security and which was orchestrated to trash the then Government’s GDP ‘reformer’. The Kimunya ideology must have been a confused ‘political ideology’ that diffused through the Chambers and bore a poisonous partisan fruit for the nation.

The spin-doctor, the bullfighter, Dr. Bonny Khalwale and other political forecasters for 2012 fought their battle on their hot and sweaty seats to the comfort and amusement of constituents on TV. Majority were good in heckling than in content and material. In fact they were not talking about the Grand Regency ‘inner facets’ but confining themselves instead to generalities, banalities, double-speak, bland calls and assumed passion to physically fight ‘corruption’ really hard with their bellies out. After the busy fight and headaches many of them became silent, appeared tired and empty with their ‘historic’ burbling.

But again, their characters and ill satire in Parliament proved the colour of their elite post-election vengeance. The MPs’ moment of consensus politics ‘only said the same thing’, again and again. In such it is hard to state the views of wananchi that elected those with sinister moves and vested interests devoid of politics and seen to be promoting true transparency. On my glasses I saw activists in Parliament burning out their heavy lunchtime meals. Call that verbo-physical aerobics of shillings and less sense.

Now that Hon. Kimunya has resigned would he still be enveloped by a catorie of ‘haters’, the political types with other slews of lurid ‘latter economic stories’ only this time for him to fully arise from the ‘dead’?

Are the likes of Dr. Bonny Khalwale happy men? No! And I doubt that big. The Finance Minister had made many go into depression for he had re-assured them that he would rather ‘die than resign’. They had wanted him ‘dead’ as a doornail. Interesting, Hon. Kimunya reminded Kenyans of how the Lord was treated and persecuted. Kimunya literally died on the cross of Parliament and rose from the dead on the SEVENTH day of ‘persecution’ as he left the TOMB of treasury.

Does his ‘death or resurrection’ at Treasury now amount to his political death, coma, sleep or strategy for future leadership and an avenue for further political counter-machinations? Shall Parliamentarians continue to play ‘bull-fighting’ with the Finance docket, Parliament as an institution and Wanjiku?

Has Parliament allowed Hon. Kimunya to sharpen his ‘outdoor’ political golf shots of Muthaiga as he helps crush the real balls of the bulls of Parliament from the backbench?

I hope not for we are yet to see the Olympolitics of our Parliamentarians and their Judases (Raila?) as custodians of our voter’s cards that come with a price hard to settle.

GUYS,

What does the Present Kenyan constitution say on the situation when a minister is not capable to carry his duty or has resigned like Mr. Kimunya has done to give way for an investigation. Who should resume his place until a new minister is named?. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF ASSISTANT MINITERS AT THE MOMENT?. I do hope that in Kenya we have a civilized president , prime minister and parliament to see that an assistant minister is promoted to carry on the duty of a minister until all the judiciary processes are over on Kimunya`s case. Even Kibaki himself expect Kalonzo to carry his duty when he is away or sick. I therefore do not see the point of naming straight away a new finance minister since we do have an assistant minister in that office.

Thanks

Paul Nyandoto.

Nyandoto,

You have said well, that is how it should be. Kenyans should not panic or be in a harry to appoint someone for that position while Kimunya is being investigated. The second in command should take over until the matter is resolved. That is how Public Offices are run and that is how it is constituted according to law, this is the transparency we are talking about.

My question is will Kimunya be still earning salary? If so public should not be taxed to pay someone else for a job that can be done by the Assistant. Again someone proposed and floated Michuki’s name which is a serious dent of Kenyan’s intelligence a test to Kenyans authority. In my wildest immagination, Michuki should not be considered for public service, until the Government prefers pending Sub-poena charges he is likely to answer against mis-use of Public Office and his shoddiness in the past. Public already rejected Michuki until he clears himself and prove he can handle public office with commitment and trust. This is someone Kenyans had lost trust and rejected, who should not be forced on to people wherever service is calling. This is the kind of Democracy and transparency we are talking about.

Just follow the law people!! and I hope Parliament will also rule it that way. There should be no obsolute worry or fear. Ministry of Finance is not short of people or personnel to run it presently, so people can concentrate on other crucial matters. I believe Oburu is already doing the services as is necessary and obligated since the office is already vacated by Kimani.

Good point,

Thanks,

Re:Secrets of success-Part 1, 2;
   ****

– – – – – – – – – – –

In our continuous search of how to become successful in this world and make it to the home for the Saints,I would like us today to borrow a leaf from the field of Mathematics! Both teachers and students in the field of mathematics know as a matter of fact that knowing all the formulas does the trick! In like manner,to be successful, we need to know what the Lord of success needs us to know, understand and do!

It goes without saying, at least in my mind, that God’s claim that, “We are His by both creation and redemption,” is without question! He-God- is indeed a master designer of all that we see in this world. He, alone knows the end from the beginning, and what’s good for His creation!

Part of our suffering is as a result of our distorted thinking that we know better than God! That which in our minds we regard as making sense, has in the end proved to be the causes of our un-happiness, disease, and death! Allow me to cite but two examples:

1.Think about sugar for a moment! We all know that sugar in its many forms is good. Most people like anything sugary. But we also know that sugar is the cause of many diseases. Doctors and Dentists remind their patients all the time to stay away from sugar!

2.What about meat? A good number like meat and consume a lot. But meat too has been and continue to be a cause of many diseases.

So do you want to have good health? Here is what the Bible says:

Genesis 1:29 And God said,Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree,in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed:to you it shall be for meat

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging and whoever is deceived thereby is not wise

Isaiah 55:2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread?

1 Corinthians 3:16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwelleth in you

3 John:2 Beloved I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospered.

So do you want to succeed in having good health and avoid spending too much on medication and sending yourself too early to the grave? Then here is what the good book suggests. Choose a diet that is in line with the Lord of the universe. Avoid putting into your system anything that can have a negative impact to you and others.

While there are certain disease’s that come due to the consequences of sin and therefore we have no control over them, there are others more that we can avoid if we chose to.

So really the choice is ours! I have chosen to strictly follow my maker’s recommendations. How about you my friend?

Just a thought!

NYANZA ECONOMIC FORUM – CONFERENCE

Nyikwa Ramogi, Nyanza Economic Forum is announcing a conference belwo: please feel free to browse our website on www.nyanzaforum.org.

For those who can attend let us discuss the way forwad for the Development of Nyanza province… Dala en Dala

Announcing the Nyanza Economic Conference 2008 at University Hotel, Kisumu (7 – 8, August)

Following the February 2008 power sharing agreement that brought to an end the post election in s tability that resulted in massive losses of life and property, Nyanza is poised to become a prime investment destination with agriculture playing the lead role in the recovery. The new political dispensation is ushering in a new sense of optimism and hope for an economic renaissance in Nyanza Province.

The planned construction of the Kisumu International Airport , for instance, is expected to generate a surge in economic activity, and it will open up new opportunities for exploitation of Nyanza’s largely untapped natural resources. The anticipated i mprovement in the region’s long neglected road and communications infrastructure is also expected to encourage new investments in virtually all sectors of the economy, and particularly, agriculture.

The Nyanza Economic Conference – 2008 will put the spotlight on Nyanza Province , and Kisumu in particular, as one of the new frontiers for a diversity of investments. Kisumu is Kenya ‘s third largest city, and it is the economic centre for western Kenya . The City and surrounding areas offer enormous economic and investment potentials, which span from finance, agriculture, agro-processing, dairy, aqua-culture, mining, hospitality, entertainment, education, health, water sports, media and manufacturing. The Conference will provide a unique platform for projecting practical pathways for elevating the region into a major hub for agricultural production, agro-processing and marketing.

Nyanza Economic Conference is an initiative of Nyanza Economic Forum (NEF), a non-partisan network of individuals, groups and organizations established in January 2008 to find strategic solutions to the social and economic challenges confronting Nyanza Province.

The core activities of the Forum include:

identifying, packaging and promoting specific investment opportunities in selected high potential productive sectors of Nyanza Province ;

mobilizing financial, human and technical resources and support for individuals and groups seeking to take advantage of the identified investment opportunities;

championing the improvement of the business environment in Nyanza through advocacy, information dissemination and public events.

The Forum is dedicated to breaking down the barriers of social and economic development in Nyanza and to encouraging widespread and effective participation at all levels of society.

Kasarani.com Is Commited To Free Press.

Posted: 9th July 2008

A highly esteemed Kasarani.com member has asked a valid question. Is Kasarani committed to free press?

The Kasarani team would like to take this opportunity, first to thank our active bloggers for the brilliant work they have done to build this site. To answer our esteemed member Joram Ragem, Kasarani.com is committed to a *responsible free press*.

Kasarani.com provides a genuine service to members: providing tools for social networking and expression of thoughts and ideas. However, we have responsibilities and terms of service that writers in particular should be aware of. Here is a link to the Kasarani.com site terms of service http://www.kasarani.com/help_tos.php. Here is a link to the Kasarani Blogs Editorial Policy http://www.kasarani.com/blogs_editorial_policy.php

For those members who missed it, there were a couple of bloggers who posted blogs that crossed the line. They advocated *killing* members of a particular tribe in Kenya for ruining the economy.Kenyans are still hurting from the post elections violence and we do not want Kasarani to be used in anyway to promote violence. The blogs were online for about 2 hours. That is irresponsible blogging that is against the Kasarani.com terms of service.

We implemented a new filtering system that unfortunately had a bug that prevented members from posting blogs. We only realized this after one of our key bloggers, Alen Wekesa, informed the site developers. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

Thank you for being a Kasarani.com member.

Is Kibaki the Libian Investor ?

A Dispatch from Onyango Oloo in Nairobi
First draft unedited

It is about 2 pm Kenya time and I have to rapidly revise this piece in thewake of the breaking news that Kimunya had not only “offered to step aside”but that the President had accepted this offer. In a caveat, PNUspokesperson Dr. Alfred Mutua “clarified” that the move was only“temporary”. He was quoted in a Reuters dispatch (9:49 am GMT, Tuesday,July 08, 2008) as saying that “ the finance minister has been indiscussions with the president over this…but he will not be replaced, it isonly a temporary move…”News of the resignation came amidst reports that at least 10 civil societyactivists including Ann Njogu and Okiya Omtatah, were roughed up andarrested INSIDE a restaurant next to the Kenyatta International ConferenceCentre apparently because they were just about to exercise their right toparticipate in a peaceful democratic protest demanding Kimunya’sresignation and an end to impunity on issues of grand graft.Keen perusers of the Kenyan print and electronic media may have noticed asubtle shift in the way in which the country’s newspapers, radios andtelevision stations have been covering the scandalous sale of the GrandRegency Hotel in Nairobi and the dubious role of Finance Minister AmosKimunya in the whole saga. For instance, there are all these seemingly innocuous op-ed pieces whichare apparently taking an “objective” look at the whole thing and pokingholes at the seemingly air-tight case against Kimunya and his allegedcohorts. One such article can be found on Page 11 of the Tuesday, July 08,2008 edition of the Daily Nation where Nicholas Mue cautions his reader to“beware [of]the distortions” in a piece entitled Vital facts and figureslost in Grand Regency Sale Saga-basically an apologia for Amos Kimunya. Onthe facing page, in the leader section, Macharia Gaitho, one of the senioreditors with the Nation Media Group argues that the “report that indictedKimunya left a great to be desired”. Examine the letters pages not only ofthe Daily Nation but the Standard and the Nairobi Star. On the weekend, Isaw a couple of other articles over the weekend-especially the piece in theSunday Nation putting the case for and the case against Kimunya.By far the most blatant form of media partisanship was evidenced on Sundaywhen Citizen TV aired live, several hours of a raucous public rally inKimunya’s Kipipiri constituency. This is where the Finance Ministerdelivered his now infamous “I’d rather die than resign” defiant speechwhich was followed by Uhuru Kenyatta rambling on and on about the need forthe “community” to rally behind Kimunya and making references to thePNU/ODM rifts in relation to 2012. Kimunya himself did not shy away fromblurting out that the campaign against him was tantamount to a plot to“finish” the Agikuyu. It later transpired that this slot was paid for.A very impeccable source here in Nairobi told me ( this was two days ago)there was a high level PNU meeting on Wednesday last week where it wasdecided that Kimunya must be saved at all costs. My source says that UhuruKenyatta chaired that meeting. I am further informed that Kshs 110 millionwas set aside for damage control in the media and that a particular publicrelations firm was brought on board to implement this strategy.A key tactic in this fight back strategy was to recruit key editors in allthe media houses. It was agreed that the media strategy would consist of the following:-Casting doubt on the allegations against Kimunya;-Bringing up the spectre of Raila Odinga as a bogey man to galvanize thePNU base;-Going after James Orengo and other chief accusers of Amos Kimunya;-Tribalizing the issue by giving the impression that the Luos in ODM wereafter the key Kikuyus in PNU;-Imputing that the war against Kimunya was just the dress rehearsal for anupcoming campaign against Kibaki; Now there is no tangible evidence that “money has been poured” but it isinteresting to note that the splashy, often trashy Weekly Citizen tabloidmade the Luo versus Kikuyu angle the thrust of their cover story in theircurrent edition. The flipside of this strategy is using elements of the state terror machineto intimidate those Kenyan activists taking to the streets to demonstratetheir opposition to the fraudulent sale of the Grand Regency. In my humble opinion, the PNU Claw Back over Mumunyagate is an act ofdesperation which reeks of ethnic chauvinism. It is a ploy that is likelyto boomerang and even blow up in the face of its conspirators. If we are to read Dr Alfred Mutua well, he is basically telling Kenyansthat Kimunya’s resignation is a time out, face saving tactic, implying tothe PNU base that Kimunya will roar back to the controls of the Treasuryafter the complete damage control exercise is over and after a hand pickedcommittee probably established by President Kibaki has “exonerated” himfully. The other thing which may be at play is a gambit to perhaps pre-empt theministerial statement scheduled to be unleashed in parliament by PrimeMinister Raila Amolo Odinga.Whatever the case, the PNU side has goofed badly.First, by not recognizing the mood in the country which is now beyondODM/PNU schisms. On Sunday I watched Paul Muite on Family TV basicallytaking a very progressive stance on the issue- stating that Kimunya had togo and saying that the “reformists” in the Grand Coalition, and he singledout Raila and Orengo were being undermined by the “conservatives” aroundthe President. In the case of the Prime Minister, Muite said that PNU wasusing the Civil Service to undercut his powers- citing the vulnerability ofcivil servants like the Lands Commissioner and how their job insecuritymade them dance to the tunes of Muthaura and Kimunya in doing the necessarypaper work to effect the Grand Regency handover.Secondly, President Kibaki’s options are severely limited. The more he tries to stonewall, the more likely for the scandal to swallowthe Othaya MP. Already there are allegations in the streets of Nairobi thatMwai Kibaki IS THE LIBYAN INVESTOR- in the sense that someone (allegedlyhis own daughter Judy was the person who closed the deal) bought the hotelon his behalf. He will pay for any further sitting on the fence.Thirdly, Central Kenya “Succession” politics will rubbish any attempt atbuilding a united front to defend Kimunya, Njuguna, Ringera and the gangaccused of impropriety over Grand Regency- with Saitoti, Uhuru, Karua,Michuki and others pulling in different directions. Already NARC-Kenyathrough Danson Mungatana has allied itself as a party with those callingfor Kimunya’s ouster.Fourthly, Uhuru Kenyatta will rue his rash outbursts in defence of AmosKimunya, especially now that the former Finance Minister has eaten humblepie (before his actual demise) and bit the resignation bullet. Uhuru islikely to be reminded of his underhand shenanigans in subverting the lawduring his brief tenure as Local government minister in the matter of thestrange nominations of councilors. Some of us have not forgotten that oneof his close aides was caught red handed on camera with hundreds ofthousands of shillings given to the aide as a bribe during the same civicnominations. More than that, it would appear that Uhuru has forgotten thathe is the son of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, one of Kenya’s most notorious landgrabbers who left people in Taita Taveta and other parts of the countryseething with resentment as squatters on their own land.Fifthly, PNU’s claw back tactics will revive the post-election bitternessamong a large swathe of Kenyans who are still very resentful about howPresident Kibaki and his cronies used billions of shillings to rigthemselves back to power. Remember that a lot of the money being questionedin the Grand Regency is alleged to be part of a 5.6 billion “gift” from theLibyans to PNU to use during the elections.Anyways, let me pause here.We have to rush to court to be in solidarity with our civil societycolleagues who were arrested earlier today.

This piece may be updated later…

Kimunya finally resigns !!!!!!!!

Kenya’s Finance minister quits over hotel saga
By DAVE OPIYOLast updated: 2 hours ago
Kenya’s Finance Minister Amos Kimunya has quit over the controversial sale of a luxury hotel at the centre of Nairobi.

Mr Kimunya called a Press conference and issued a brief statement, saying: “I have requested President Kibaki to be allowed to step aside to facilitate an inquiry into this matter.”

At the same time, police have beat up and arrested a group of activists who were meeting to plan protests against Mr Kimunya’s handling of the Grand Regency sale.

Mr Kimunya said his conscience was clean that he well managed the sale of the hotel.

“I’ve held several consultations with President Kibaki, my family, friends and colleagues on Grand Regency. My conscience is very clean on the role of the Treasury and specifically myself on this matter. I am open to an independent inquiry to prove my innocence,” he told reporters.

Earlier, police stormed a Nairobi restaurant and arrested a number of civil society activists who were planning demonstrations against Mr Kimunya over the sale.

The group, meeting under the aegis of Name and Shame Coalition Against Corruption, had gathered at the city’s Garden Square restaurant adjacent to the Kenyatta International Conference Centre when riot and regular police in full gear stormed the venue.

Some Luoland Ministers and MP’s are becoming embarrassment to PM Raila Odinga

By Rev Okoth Otura

www.cdmk.org

Toronto-Canada

I congratulate Hon Minister for Lands Mr James Orengo ( Nyatieng’) by exposing his former fellow Minister of Finance, Mr Amos Kimunya corrupt deal of the Grand Regency Hotel sale, and a such Mr Orengo many of his positive transformation force in his ministry are awesome, however, this should not consumed much of his time. I suppose the matter should now be left for the law to take it’s course.

Therefore, Hon Mr Orengo would you please set up an agenda for luoland to obtain the title deeds for the purpose of bank loan sureties across entire luoland to enable us compete with other communities’ in terms of economical development since we are already a head in political activisms.

The PM Raila Odinga had already evokes our memory of the Late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga vision of Luo thrift and Trading Company, which refreshed our memory of his father slogan of the of 1946 of  €œRiwruak e Teko €? ( Unity is Strength).

The PM Raila is not to be blame for Luoland underdevelopment since he is not a luo homeland MP, and therefore history will judge harshly some of our current busy body leaders if they fail to empower our people economically before 2012.

The late Jaramogi was a political, education and economical institute seer, he tirelessly work hard before independence to bolster luo community with economic base through Luo Thrift and Trading Company to empower them in their pose for struggle for independence.

Below are Some of his quotes:

I was convinced that political power had to be struggled for and achieved as a stepping stone to any advance at all, €? he writes in Not Yet Uhuru.
I was convinced that to start the battle against white domination, we had to assert our economic independence. We had had it drummed into us that the whites had the brains to give the orders and it was for Africans to carry them out. We had to show we were capable of enterprise and development in fields beyond our shambas, €? he wrote,  €œI hated the idea of our people begging from the government. €?

While we still waiting for the Majimbo Constitution to be enactment by April 2009, I call upon all the luo Ministers and our leaders to initiate economical entrepreneurships across the luoland, assist brilight young people to further education, provide employments for the luos in theirn respective ministries and departments, those without papers can be employed as laborers or tea boys/girls.

The time has come when we first become luos before we become Kenyans, it was well demonstrated during political crisis in 2007 and it will still repeat itself if Majimbo constitution is not enacted.

After several years of Luo political realignment since the death of the late Jaramogi in 1994, the PM Raila turned the page in the Luo political history book last year 2007 by engage major luo political experienced and capable giants across the board to help him forge development in for our homeland.

If the late Jaramogi, Ker Adala, Jaduong’ Ombok Thim, Councilor Mbewa Ndeda or Ogago Thiko could come from the grave today they will definitely bless the PM Raila Odinga, for having managed to bring Prof Anyang; Nyong’o ( Woud Padri), Orengo Jim ( Nyatieng’) and Otieno Anyang’ ( Woud Bado Mboyo) together for the sake the luo development and unity.

Luo Leaders must stop bickering!

While the Gema community in the Grand Coalition are busy reinforcing and empowering their community economically, some our of Luo ministers and elected leaders are pondering on insignificant political substance debates which cannot improve the livelihood of our impoverish people.

The PM Raila Odinga made an extreme sacrifice to settle a deal with President Kibaki for Grand Coalition Government, which is a worldwide historical and symbolic political conflict settlements of its kind.

Instead for some of the Luo Ministers and leaders to put an economical and development strategy agenda first for their constituents, they are playing the roll of civil rights activists.

It is however, unfortunate that the Luo elected leaders are still making public utterances as if Kenya is still on a campaign trail, the duties which should be left for the civic societies.

The PM Raila Odinga, made a very clear statement that Luos should desist from the opposition political mentality and start seek bank loans and venture into business entrepreneurship, since then no major progress has been made.
Luos are desperate for a new start while some of our MPs are desperately strategizing how to win next election basing their development record on government Constituency Development Funds instead of engaging the electorates in economical investment activities.

The dependency syndromes to the government and handout culture is being promoted by our own leaders, who are forever threaten to empower their constituents for their fear that they may run for the political office.

Meanwhile, the Gema Ministers and MP’s are compaigning for their IDP’s constituents to be compensanted by the Grand Coalition government, while some luo MP’s have not even carried the head count of how many of their constituents relatives outside luoland were killed or disapear or in jail, maimed, widows, widowers, orphans and those still living under the tents elsewhere in the country or currently homeless.
It is unacceptable for some of leaders to major on the minors, at this time when the Kenyans are trying to recover from the painfull past, particurlarly a tribe that has been victims because of staunch stand against injustice for decades, for their leaders to dwell in the high tower of the luxuries lifestyle.

Finally, I also appeal to all the ODM Ministers and Leaders across the Jimbos to do the same for if the Gema Community practicing the act perfectively, why not us

Eh Okoth Otura!

If we get drunk we will miss the bigger picture.

Bwana awalinde, akae nanyi nyote……..

Ahsanteni Nyote, Shukran,
Mimi wenu,

KENYA TO COMPENSATE UGANDAN TRADERS; LEADERS TACKLED ENERGY PROBLEMS

KENYA TO COMPENSATE UGANDAN TRADERS OVER POLL VIOLENCE LOSSES OF GOODS ON TRANSIT.

By Leo Odera Omolo.

The Kenyan government is willing to compensate Ugandan businessmen in accordance to the value of their merchandise destroyed during the post violence.

The government has asked Uganda to submit the monetary value of the cargo lost in transit during the dark days of January, February when Kenya was stripped with post election chaos.

A senior government official in Kampala was last week quoted extensively the influential weekly, the EAST AFRICAN as saying that Nairobi had sent diplomatic notice through its high commission in Kampala on April 4 indicating that it was “going to pay all those who lost their goods.”

The weekly quoted Mr. Patrick Guma, a spokesman for Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Ministry as saying “We are aware of the message from the government of Kenya. We have a lot of interest, but for now it is still sensitive and therefore I can not comment further on the subject”.

The embattled Rift Valley railway; the joint concessionaire managing the Kenya- Uganda railway, also reported huge losses as a result of the post election violence. Bob Louw, the head of operations at RVR-Kenya had estimated an average lose of Ksh. 15 million (USD 231,000) per day during the violence.

Section of the railway line between Western Kenya and neighbouring Uganda was damaged, interrupting the flow of goods. The RVR official claimed total loss of business stood at about Kshs. 375 million (USD 5.8 million) by the end of January.

Although it is anticipated that RVR can offset its losses from its insurance policy the firms CEO Roy Puffet was quoted as saying “we have heard about the compensation, but we are still making a study to compute the losses.”

The RVR CEO said there have been extensive correspondences between his firm and the two neighbouring governments.

More than a dozen Ugandan traders lost merchandise and vehicle during the violence that erupted in Kenya at the end of last year and early this year between supporters of the Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga and President Mwai Kibaki, the two main presidential candidates in the race.

Kenya offers the land locked Uganda its only divert route to the sea but weeks of violence disrupted trade and saw vehicles as well as tracks on the Kenya- Uganda railway line vandalized by the gangs of political goons.

A lot of the violence occurred in the Western Kenyan towns of Kisumu, Eldoret, Nakuru, and Kericho and at the border port towns of Busia and Malaba, both opposition stronghold and transit points for trade between the two countries.

After President Yoweri Museveni hastily congratulated President Mwai Kibaki on his highly suspicious and disputed re-election, angry opposition supporters who were still marching in the streets protesting against the election results started attacking goods vehicles and traders going to Uganda.

The opposition followers had also read a malice attitude on the part of President Museveni when he hurriedly visited Kenya on a failed mission to save the mediation effort started. Several fuel trucks were set ablaze and burnt to ashes and the trade blockade resulted in a severe shortage of fuel sent mump prices soaring in Uganda.

Officials from the Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA| lobby group said they have already identified six of their colleagues with claims worth over USD 835,958, but they were informal. The claims would eventually be submitted to Uganda’s solicitor General for approval.

“We have learnt tat although no figure has been discussed in terms of compensation; Kampala has already set in motion by starting verifying claims by Ugandan traders who say they lost goods and other property worth millions of dollars.

It has been however, disclosed that Kenya has been receiving individual claims through its diplomatic mission in Kampala, but has since assured the Ugandan Government to coordinate the process so that the claims can be settled through one lump-sum payment.

End.

LEADERS TACKLED ENERGY PROBLEMS IN AFRICA SOUTH OF SAHARA

By Leo Odera Omolo.

KEY players in Africa’s electricity sector recently converged together in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi under the auspices of the Union of Producers of Electricity Power in Africa (UPDEA).

The conference whose theme was “Realization of Access to Electricity for All People” came against the background of a crippling energy crisis in sub-Saharan Africa.

According to the World Bank, manufactures in Africa report an average of Two months of power outrages per year. As a result, firms lose five to six percent of sales-with losses as high as 20 percent in the informal sectors.

The World Bank blamed a combination of poor planning and inadequate finance as well as insolvent power utilities for the crisis in the sector.

Africa’s meager contribution of two per cent to the world’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has been blamed on limited access to electricity. Only 10 percent of the continent’s population has access to electricity.

According to the International Energy Agency, over half a billion Africans will be without electricity by 2030 unless a colossal amount of USD 60 Billion Investment is made in Energy.

This is forcing the continent’s leadership to accept donor-led restructuring programmes, including privatization and rural electrification.

The Nairobi meeting made a strong argument for good governance and accountability in national power Institutions.

Even as many countries in the African Continent have experienced rapid economic growth in the country, the electric power infrastructure to support and sustain this growth has not been put in place.

At the conference, African countries were urged to form regional partnership to facilitate transfer of skills and information of power supply.

The Nairobi meeting was a follow up to the 2005 UPDEA conference held in Accra, Ghana where member countries agreed to harmonizer master plan and exchange experience.

Guatanamo did not sound a pleasing offer to Kimunya-He Bowed Down!!!

BREAKING NEWS
Kimunya finally resigns – – Headlines

By Kipkirui K¢Telwa

Finance minister Amos Kimunya has finally bowed to pressure and resigned.

Only last Sunday, an enraged Kimunya strongly asserted that he would not relinquish his Treasury job over the sale of Grand Regency hotel.

However, the embattled Kipipiri MP eventually bowed out on Tuesday to mounting pressure to pave way for investigation into his handling of Grand Regency hotel saga.

“I have requested his Excellency the president, to be allowed to step aside to facilitate the inquiry,” said Kimunya in a brief press statement he read on Tuesday afternoon.

Saying his conscience was clean on the saga, Kimunya insisted that he was open to an independent inquiry to prove his innocence.

On Sunday, Kimunya had accused Prime Minister Raila Odinga of being part of a wider scheme to bring him down and said if he had to resign, then Raila, Attorney General Amos Wako, Lands Minister James Orengo and anti-corruption commission director Aaron Ringera must also step aside to allow for investigation.

On Sunday, who had been elusive since Parliament passed a Motion of no confidence in him on Wednesday, retreated to his Kipipiri constituency to launch a fight back at a rally at Miharati Stadium.

Kimunya told his constituents that Orengo blew the whistle after “his bid to solicit a Sh3 million bribe from a legal firm involved in the sale was turned down.”

“Orengo went public after he was denied a bribe of Sh3 million he demanded from a Mr Adan, one of the lawyers involved,” Kimunya said.

But lawyer Ahmed Adan, hit dismissed Kimunya¢s allegations as falsehoods, baseless and unfounded:

Said he: “Orengo is a close friend, a polished lawyer I have worked shoulder-to-shoulder with. Kimunya¢s allegations are falsehoods, baseless and the bribe theory totally unfounded.”

Kimunya resigns over his dead body

Amos Kimunya, the architect of Grand Regency Hotel saga has resigned.

This comes in the wake of his having raised ethnic emotions to support his thieving ways at the Treasury.

As much as I want to congratulate him for having stepped aside, we must now question the role of the police in the fight against graft. It is interesting to note that the Director-General of NSIS, Major Gichangi played an active role in the Grand Regency rip-off. It is also interesting to note that the late Kanyotu, having been the Director-General of the same body, also actively played a leading role in the Goldenberg Saga.

Are our police trained to forestall such crime? Or are they trained to be the masterminds of such crimes?

Kenyans must now ask the question; why do we have the police force? It is surprising that the Commissioner of Police has kept a studious silence on the many white color rip off under the presidency of Hon Mwai Kibaki.

Kenyans must ask the question; why do we have the police force? Are they only meant to arrest petty thieves? While the people who are economically raping Kenya sit and dine with the police?

Time has come for heads to role. We cannot have a saga of such magnitude unfolding, and the police, the CID and the NSIS keep off as if that is not their responsibility.

We would like to see Kimunya taken to court and charged with abuse of office. In the same vain, we are keenly following the case of Chris Kirubi and others as they unfold in the courts.

It is instructive to note that Kenatco came down under the watch of some of these characters, and yet, no one has ever been charged with economically raping Kenatco!

In the whole, can heads role in the police force so that we have a police force that pays allegiance to the law, and not to ones station in life.

Re: MUITE ON : WHAT IT MEANS FOR KIMUNYA

Mr. Kibaki…No Amnesty for Kimunya!

Dear Kenyans and friends of Kenya,

First, action call: Please join us on 8-7-2008 at 10am, Garden Square KICC and thereafter in street protest as we deliver dismissal letter to Kimunya from the citizens of Kenya.

If the events of the paid advertisers’ rally aired on Citizen television this past weekend are anything to go by, the grand mess by the grand government on the Grand Regency is only getting grander!

The Kipipiri constituency rally where Uhuru Kenyatta was taking stock of the members of parliament from Central Province who are with Kimunya cannot be anything else than political strategy to dig an escape tunnel in the mountain of Grand Regency saga by making the fight a “PNU vs ODM affair” or “our people vs them” fight.

As matter of fact, Kenyans saw and heard Kimunya turn to old politics of whipping up tribal emotions that: “this is a plan to finish our people” that preceded the December 31st 2007 events. This isn’t the talks we would expect from our politicians in post Accord. We cannot talk of national reconciliation and at the same time play up tribal sentiments. This is despotic and opportunistic politics. Surely, Kimunya did not eat the grand loot from De la Rue, Mobitelea, Safaricom IPO and Grand Regency with the over 4 million Kenyans from his tribe or region. How can he use the public money he looted to pay up adverts on television to fan up ethnic disquiet?

On the question of his accomplices, what Kenyans want from Kimunya is to show us evidence of the official communiqués Raila, Orengo and the AG he refers to. For the time being we are going to concentrate on him our energy for exorcism of corruption in our country.

As we carryouy this exercise, Kenyans must guard themselves against politicians who run to their tribes or region when things are thick at national level to seek a political base to fight back on. I am positive that people from his tribe or region did not benefit from Kimunya’s scandals and therefore he should stop using them for trade. In parliament, Kimunya told us that he was calm in the midst of the grand storm because of his wife, daughter and friends ( read powerful individuals) and that must suffice as evidence that they are the beneficiaries of his grand scam.

Cognizant of the above, I am urgently appealing to all patriotic Kenyans to be vigilant against political opportunists who are turning the fight against corruption into an Ethnic war.

In a related matter, I wish not to debate the conduct of the Vice President Kalonzo simply because as you are aware that is a man who follows the wind. Kimunya has given him a familiar ground of defending the corrupt and that is what he spent doing over 20 years with former President Moi. We will remind him of today in 2012 when he will be invoking his christianity to woe votes for presidency.

Lastly, on Uhuru Kenyatta, we Kenyans must tell him, that he should prepared to be shaved too. When we are done with Kimunya we are going to demand implementation of the Ndung’u Land Report so that Uhuru Kenyatta and family can give us back our land to resettle the IDPs, squarters and landless. On that note, we put notice to all corrupt individuals – even the ones helping us to fight Kimunya, like Cyrus Jirongo.

I must not close this letter without making this demand – that all laws that support culture of impunity such as section 25A of Economic crime Act must be repealed; that all money swindled in corrupt deals should be recovered; and that President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila must show leadership by zero tolerance to corruption by sacking Kimunya by the close of the date 7/7!

I am your Fellow Citizen,

Time To Pull The Nuclear Option

Fellow Countrymen,

In the hallowed halls of the United States Senate, the nuclear option is pulled by a side that feels strongly about an issue on which it’s about to lose. In the estimation of the senators who employ this tactic, the passage of a certain bill, or confirmation of a man/woman to a position of influence, would so irreparably harm their constituents to the point where they feel it’s absolutely critical to tie up the Senate’s business until their fears and other pertinent issues are addressed. That’s what the Democrats did to stall the nomination of judges they considered controversial to the United States Supreme Court.

I bring up this concept of the nuclear option because I think we are fast approaching the point where it will need to be pulled in the Kenyan Parliament. It’s indeed encouraging that our Members of Parliament are discovering the enormous power they retain to slow down the Executive branch. You watched with satisfaction as one of the most powerful members of the Kibaki Cabinet was reminded that the laws of our nation apply to all, not just to the small man. And you’ve watched the increasing assertiveness of that body, especially given the impressive credentials that most members bring to the table. Gone are the days of Chotara, Nassir and Mwenje. These are the days of men and women who understand that there is honor in being principled.

Kenyans are aware that when the coalition government was put together, there was no clause that bound the parties to stick together even in the face of massive corruption and blatant impunity. Indeed, were such a clause to have been slipped in there, we would have been glad to demonstrate our maturity by kicking it out.

At this juncture, we find ourselves at a point where the nuclear option is becoming a relevant tool in dealing with our out-of-touch president, and the men who prop up his administration. In Kenya the way to pull the plug is to marshall enough votes to pass a vote of no confidence in the president, just like it was done with Kimunya. By my count, it’s beginning to look like the votes are there. Many MPs who fought like crazy to keep Kibaki in power are slowly realizing that they made a huge mistake. And they sense that the way to make atonement is to do something dramatic.

That’s where the nuclear option comes in.

What Comes Next?

When this option is pulled, we must all understand that it will mark the end of a presidency. That being the case, I want to count on the fact that our leaders have not been sitting on their laurels, forgetting that the fight to deliver the nation from the shackles of recklessness and impunity has not been won. Luckily, our leaders have not been asleep. Indeed, it is comforting to know that when the nuclear option is pulled, there will be an immediate power structure to fill the vacuum and deal decisively with any elements that may seek to capitalize on the transition period to cause despondency in the country.

The march to push Kenya to the next level of greatness is ongoing. We have the brains and the wealth to make our nation the leader in medical and technological innovation, we have the capability to push forward the rural electrification program and make clean water available to our mothers and fathers in the villages across Kenya. But as the events of the past six months have amply demonstrated, these noble goals can’t be realized as long as we are embroiled in sorting out the shenanigans of men like Kimunya, Kibaki and the crazies who support them.

Can Kenya Work Together?

You may have heard from pessimists that our nation is hopelessly divided. That we see ourselves as Luo, Kikiyu, Kalenjin, Luhya… If that’s true, it’s because of the retrogressive politics entrenched by the lack of vision of our three presidents. But yes, Kenya can and is ready to work together. The nation is praying for a leader who will transcend the parochialism of tribe and see in the pleading faces of Kenya’s children a desire for effective, fatherly leadership. A leadership that will make Cerelac and milk available to the infants, uniform and books to the school-going kids, mentoring programs for adolescents and livable wages for men and women across the land.

It’s my firm belief that when the nuclear option is pulled and the Prime Minister is put in charge of ushering in a representative constitution and proper elections held, we will have laid the foundation for a sustainable democracy that won’t need the repeated nudging of external powers. We can’t continue to be the white man’s burden forever, can we? It starts by doing things right.

The first step, the nuclear option. A vote of no confidence.

For Love of Country,

Sam O. Okello

CDF MONEY WAS USED IN MARRYING EXTRA WIVES AND PURCHASE OF CARS IN NYANZA PROVINCE

By Leo Odera Omolo

The recent claims made by an NGO alleging that billions of taxpayers money disbursed by the government in the last three years were stolen, diverted and misused by MPs who sat in the 9th Parliament has received massive support from Kenyans.

The National Taxpayers Association is said to have carried out a countrywide survey on projects funded under the CDP, LATF and 12 other devolved meant for development projects in rural areas..

The NGO has established that billions of public fund has been lost through corruption, over valued inflated costs of projects and direct theft by those charged with the responsibility of disbursing the money towards the earmarked projects

In Nyanza Province, chairmen of the Constituency Development Funds (CDF) in various constituencies have since turned overnight millionaires. Headmasters and Deputy Head teachers of various primary schools are known to have diverted the money allocated for improvement of schools to personal use. There is nothing visible on the ground to justify the disappearance of millions in CDF revolving funds/ the government should post qualified auditors, valuers and construction experts to go and make physical checks on the ground..

Some of the primary head teachers and members of school committees have manage to built themselves palatial houses in their country homesteads using the CDF money with impunity.

Several teams of investigators from the Kenya Anti-corruption Commission (KACC) made frantic efforts and visited several constituencies following complaints raised by members of the public over shameless misuses of CDF money., But nothing tangible has come out of such inquiries sparking popular allegation and rumours that the investigators might have ended up being compromised and had their hands allegedly ended being heavily oiled with the proceeds of the looted CDF money..

The association said last week “We are due to release our report detailing how the money was used in most of the constituencies but already we have shocking details of how public funds were diverted for personal use by people who openly defied the law and are still free,” said NTA coordinator Mr. Michael Otieno.

MPs who have the largest say on how CDF funds are used were deeply involved in scandals linked to the fund projects and that in most constituencies procurement and issuing of contracts for projects were done in very corrupted manner. No wonder nearly 65 per cent of the MPs in the ninth parliament were kicked out by the electorate.

In one constituency in Luo-Nyanza a CDF chairman had his wife hurriedly registered with the mumps of work as a building contractor. The wife who had no construction work experience had to hire other experienced constructors at an exorbitant fee when it came to the evacuation of tendering

The same person rented out his own building located in a local market place as the CDF office at a monthly rent of Ksh 30,000.

In another constituency an Mp had appointed his semi-illiterate barmaid girl friend as the CDF secretary. The rest of the members were his own clansmen, sycophants and practical surrogates.

Projects undertaken consumed a lot of money owing to over prices of building materials which were also sourced from groups known by kith and kin.

Those providing CDF related information maintain that if properly audited of CDF accounts from the year 2003-2007 were properly conducted; nearly half of the MPs in the 9th parliament would end up in jail.

But there are few MPs, particularly in Nyanza who had vigorously supervised the disbursement and ensured that the money budgeted went to the correct projects.

In this category, the Kisumu Rural MP Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o led the pack followed by Raphael Tuju (Rarieda), Joshua Orwa Ojode (Ndhiwa), Charles Ogusi Owino (Jalikowa) (Migori). Dr. Oburu Odinga (Bondo), Jakoyo Midiwo (Gem), Eng. Eric Opon Nyaunya (Nyando.)

The above gentlemen are the only MPs from Luo Nyanza who can account for every penny disbursed under the CDF. If there are any discrepancies, these could be negligible once.

In other constituencies money was siphoned on ghost and phantom projects. MP’s surrogates had used the money in marrying extra wives, others utilized in buying “matatus”, cars and buying houses for themselves and their spouses.

The KACC Director Harun Ringera in believes to have received hundreds of complaints letter from the disbursed constituency, but all the investigation carried out by his men have yielded no prosecution against the culprits.

In fact the issuing of the CDF money should have been shelved until after the proper auditing of the previous awardees, reelection of new CDF local committees.

In most cases and in the previous committees the MPs had deliberately made it sure that only relatives, friends and or sycophants were in that committee. The majority of the members were some illiterates with no auditing experience to waste such colossal amount of money adding up to millions.

Many constituencies, NTA said the MPs had lined up their relatives and cronies to run the development funds and they ended up sharing the money for family use.

NTA gave one shoddy example of a case in Eldoret where the digging of a simple and single pit latrine at a school cost Ksh. 600,000 but was not even completed yet the constructor was demanding more money to complete the work.

NTA has appealed for the establishment of a strong legal framework to help in managing proper funds and deal with those who have diverted the CDF money for personal use.

Worse of constituencies include Uriri, Rongo, Gwassi, Mbita, Nyakach, Muhoroni, Kisumu Town East, Ugenya, Kisumu Town West, Kasipul Kabando and Rangwe.
